[expert] KDE 2.0, taskbar, kappfinder?
I liked the taskbar of kde-1.1.2. I liked it being separate from the panel at the top of my screen. The panel had more room for app launcher icons leaving the taskbar for that one specific job - to list all running apps. I see that one can setup the kde 2.0 panel to display its own taskbar. Unfortunately, it has to share realestate with the normal panel icons as well as any others you may add. No good. Is there a way that I am unable to locate, some setting switch somewhere that will give me back a separate taskbar? What about non-kde apps? I have a LOT of gnome and X apps that are not anywhere to be found in the KMenu. Is there no kappfinder type app for kde 2.0? Is it really necessary to manually enter each and every app that I have into a menu somewhere? Netscape, staroffice, and LOTS of other well-known apps? praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

I'm having a problem getting a new 2.4pre7 kernel running on 7.1 The kernel compiles ok but on reboot the system says it cant read the hd. something about bad superblock. I get error re swap partition and native partition. Anyone got any clues for me? Do I need to update some files? [expert] KDE 2.0 installed and running...
After some package swapping/changing, I was able to get qt2 and kde to install cleanly and run. It is almost all ok. I do get a lot of crashes of various apps like the control-center, KGNUPlot (which is in the networking directory?!), and a few others. KGNUPlot crashes immediately upon starting. In any case, it all seems relatively nice but... where is kmail? Where are all my gnome/X-apps? Is there no appfinder in kde 2.0 so I can automagically add the apps on my system to my kmenu? MUST I do it all manually? I did install ALL the kde rpms that I could find. I have a lot of non-kde apps onboard and I really would rather not have to add all of them manually. There is not a single gtk+/gnome app anywhere in my kmenus. I also have netscape, blender, ac3d, daVinci, pybliographic, etc, etc. Are there no kde 2.0 themes or a theme manager as yet? Finally, I haven't (at least yet) found any configuration setting where I can control the layout/placement of my window buttons. I like my X (for killing a window) to be in the far right, not the default far left, for instance. I can find no way to rearrange the buttons. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

I had the same problem when I tried an upgrade for kde-1.99. [expert] pgcc ok to compile kde2 ?
Hi, all. While analysing the feasibilty of installing kde2.0 on my old Mandrake 6.0, I find that kde2 requires egcs 1.1.x or gcc 2.95.x. Well, here is what I have: libstdc++-2.9.0-3mdk libstdc++-devel-1.1.3-3mdk pgcc-c++-1.1.3-3mdk Is pgcc an acceptable equivalent to either of the 2 required compilers, or must I rip them out and install egcs-1.1.2? Re: [expert] Still telnet server not working
Is the telnet-server-0.16-4mdk package installed? - just because the lines are in the config files does *NOT* mean it is. You have to manually install the telnet-server package. Use kpackage and check that you have it. This was a bad move on Mandrakes part (prob under the guise of security, misguided coz they didnt supply anything else to provide the functionality, or document it properly!) to remove it as it is one of the standard unix packages and it keeps catching even experianced people out. Would have been better to include it in the base install and disable it in the inetd files (hint hint Mandrake!) Re: [expert] Acrobat Reader frontend not working
Acrobat has a "thing" about 24 bit X. If you are using this resolution, change to 16 bit or possibly 32bit (some displays map 32 bit to 24 bit which doesnt help). Or better yet, avaoid the problem and use xpdf which is both more stable, prints on my system which acrobat doesnt, and avoids the display problems which can vary. see the docs about options such as password support. [expert] Missing RPM Database
My /var/lib/rpm has been deleted. I don't know how it happened - I suspect Mandrake Update (it was killed during a troublesome download), but I have no proof. Or perhaps it was someone else in DrakConf ? A case for Inspector Clouzot perhaps?? Now I am there, how do I get out? I have looked at Maximum RPM, and I cannot understand how rpm --initdb or rpm --rebuilddb can help unless rpm has access to the original rpm files. Anyway, if I try rpm --initdb or rpm --rebuilddb or rpm -anything I always get the same message: "failed to open /var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm: No such file or directory" before rpm jacks out. So I can't install, upgrade or anything. Do I really have to start from scratch again? If so, RPM and friends need a government health warning. I back up /root, /home and /etc regularly, but I didn't know how vital /var/lib/rpm is, and how vulnerable. Has anyone got any other vital backup suggestions I may not be aware of? [expert] Re: Wordperfect 2000 and 7.1
Larry Marshall's comments made me rethink my assumptions about the printing problems I've had with WPO 2000 Deluxe. Thank you, Larry. The key phrase was that there's nothing to do if printcap is set up correctly. This rang a bell, and upon checking, I discovered that Mandrake 7.1 "secure" leaves /etc/printcap mode 600. Naturally, a user process like WP can't read it, and, therefore, can't set up printers. So, if your printers ever disappear in WP, verify the mode on /etc/printcap. [expert] Acrobat Reader frontend not working
Acrobat Reader hangs immediately upon start-up. No windows appear, nor any error messages. I have managed to run it once (I'm pretty sure it was only once). I'm running on a brand new 7.1 machine from ASL; the only thing I have installed is libstdc++ from the 7.1 distribution. Re-installing (the same, latest) version from Adobe doesn't help. Removing .acrorc doesn't help. Running as root doesn't help. Running from a brand new user account doesn't help. It is only the front-end that doesn't work: everything works fine on the command line. I don't know how kde actually runs yet because I had to do all this remotely via ssh. I'll have to wait until I get home after work to restart X to see if the install is good and working properly. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

In that one instance, I had both kdebase-1.1.2 AND kdebase-2.0-1 installed. Oops. I manually removed the kdebase-1.1.2 rpm and reinstalled kde-2.0 (all rpms) again. This time, kdm was better behaved, though it wouldn't start "failsafe". Kde was better, with proper icons, though the panel was, again, nearly useless. About half the items I tried in the kde menus did not work. That was my experience. The ONE kdebase-1.1.2 rpm did not get replaced when I did it. I had to remove it myself. My qt IS updated. The latest qt2 packages were the first I upgraded since KDE is absolutely dependent upon it. Few questions. What version of libstdc++ do you have? What version of menu? What version of rpm? I believe these packages are the only logical possible problems, at least in my case. During rpm install of most of the KDE packages and the install of qt2, my /usr/bin/update-menus crashes/core dumps. This binary is supplied by menu. Menu requires the appropriate libstdc++ (I believe). It also, obviously, ties into the rpm install process. I am HOPING it is merely something simple like libstdc++, that all I need to do is install the proper version. During an attempt to build qt2 source several days ago, the build would fail because the configure script couldn't find libstdc++. Bizarre, because libstdc++ is right there in /usr/lib, which is in my /etc/ld.so.conf file, and I have run ldconfig in an attempt to make sure it is "known" about. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

[expert] new apache and mod_perl
I tried installing apache-1.3.14-2mdk and apache-mod_perl-1.3.14_1.24-2mdk from cooker 7.2 beta last night. mod-perl is compiled directly into apache-mod_perl which runs as a proxy server alongside vanilla apache in this setup, unlike what I had been using where mod_perl was a loadable module in the main apache. Anyway, I couldn't get this new set up to work. When I tried to access a perl script, the server started spawning a huge number of threads that ground the computer to a halt. I tried to down-grade back to my old setup, but couldn't get that working, so right now I'm running mod_perl-less. My questions are: Have other people gotten this setup to work? Can I use the new apache with the regular mod_perl module and without the proxy server? I tried but couldn't get this to work. Where can I find the appropriate libperl.so file? When I installed this from perl-base-5.600-17mdk, apache was unhappy. -- -- smalltime industries brings you the latest in games, information, art, and interplanetary transport. It turns out that you will have to upgrade almost everything. To install and use kde 2.0, you need to upgrade rpm and menu. These upgrades require glibc to be upgraded to THE latest (and by some accounts, broken) version. THIS breaks almost every app on your system so you also have to upgrade them (just download the latest glibc-2.96 or whatever it is and try to install it WITHOUT using the --nodeps or --force switch, you will get a LONG list of rpms that will be broken if you install it. These rpms are the same ones you would have to upgrade). I am debated breaking my stable 7.1 system just for the sake of using kde 2.0. You have to essentially make your system an unstable cooker or 7.2beta system to make all things right. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

What I was thinking of was actually a lot simpler. I just wanted a script that could step it's way through a custom install. I was assuming that most of the info would be residing on the CDs. Remember, this whole thing has to fit on a floppy, so don't elaborate it too much. Besides, though I wanted the CD to write a basic script to the floppy, the idea was that it would then be edited by the sysAdmin. Customizations would be for things like, how to deal with differently sized hard disks, etc. The more ambitious suggestions are probably better saved for a post-install phase. Any configuration that gets done should be available after install (my sugestion is webmin's perl scripts, since they are already used/available after installation), and should preferably take advantage of existing apps (ie webmin). Why don't you just wait another 5 days for mdk7.2 to come out, and use the new rpm and menu from there (which won't be compiled with glibc2.96). WP provides two print options, one is to use your printcap printers and the other is to use a Wine print facility. Don't even know what the later is but it uses printcap designations just fine. In short, I haven't "set up" anything within WP to print; it's just not needed. > Second, every so often, when I exit Wordperfect, the entire system hangs > hard, and requires a power cycle to fix it. If so you could have an overflow if you have too many clients connecting to that server. Try to use "security = domain" instead of "server": By using security = server/domain, you are requesting autentication by an existing PDC/BDC. The difference is that if you use "domain", an encrypted RPC channel will be opened for the authentication, and will be closed when its done.
