RE: [expert] Help with video card signal
Assuming no problems with the motherboard, power supply, video card and monitor. 1) Make sure the video adapter is FULLY seated. If it isn't you will not get video output. 2) If the system beeps twice during the "post" then it is not recognizing the video adapter. 3) Remove all other cards and try, if this works, go into the bios and "reset" the PNP/PCI data area and make sure that you PNP OS = on. 4) Re-insert the cards one at a time and make sure you are getting video. 5) You did not mention what type of card it is, some newer cards, NVIDIA & Voodoo 3 & 5 require higher voltage levels than what the older motherboards can provide. Normally there is a special jumper on the motherboard labeled VOODOO or VOODOO3. If present enable this. If not, and you have one of these boards you are SOL. -JMS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of N K Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2000 10:22 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [expert] Help with video card signal Howdy all... [expert] Printers & Mandrake 7.2
Hi, I know that this is a common question, but I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had experience with either a Canon BJC-6200 or an Epson ColorStylus 760 under Linux (and particularly Mdk 7.2) I have shortlisted these as the best 2 printers in my budget range that are presently available locally. I have been to various sites that seem to suggest the Epson is better supported under Linux, but others describe the Canon drivers as "operational". I am after a printer to do good quality printing - some colour photos, but mostly B&W - at home. It must be useable under Linux, M$ Windows (98 & NT) and maybe even BeOS, and also network accessable. I currently have a Lexmark 2030 which is a Win-printer and not able to network even then! so I'm looking to replace it with something decent. Any help/opinions would be much appreciated. [expert] kpanel settings
What is the name of the app that handles kpanel settings. I made the mistake of "upgrading" from kde2.0 to kde2.0.1 and now the kpanel settings option in the kpanel menu (right click on kpanel) OR select from the Panel menu -> settings does nothing. Nothing at all. Since this is broken (along with the kappfinder since it cannot find kpm which is clearly there and runnable from a command line) I cannot edit the kpanel settings. If I knew what the name of the actual kde app was that ran when one selected this option on a working kde version, I could try to run it from an xterm. Can anyone provide an app name to try to run to edit the panel settings? praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

Well, every Kppp version I've ever used since Mdk 6.0, clk on the docked modem lights on the panel and a details/disconnect dialog box pops up that also shows the connection speed. Also you can check the 'show log' box on Kppp and the debug window will show the connect speed briefly before it diappears. Sort'a, that's the connection handshake speed with the ISP. True connection speeds are what you can download at, from the site you're downloading from. A decent sustained rate for 28,8 is 3.3K/sec, for 31,2 - 3.6K/sec if you don't have too many stalls. If you really want to monitor the connection speed, click on the panel lights (as above) and choose 'details' You'll see a running avg and a graph of the connection. Also many download butlers (my favorite is nt-1.19-1mdk.i586.rpm, it's in /contrib/) show the download rate/avg/and time over multiple downloads. NT shows this and a graph, plus it's the simplest damn best workin downloader i've ever used. Supports retries and resumes. 'Bout the only configuration it needs is to tell it what dir you want the dl'd files put in ;) -- Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

Hi, I had talk working under LM7.1; but now I'm trying to support my sister & nephew who are so far very impressed with LM7.2... I am not sure what the proper way is to get a talk daemon running under this newer release... xinetd does not seem to be the place and inetd is not running at all of course. Is [y]talk the best tool to use to be able to communicate remotely/interactively to help them or should I look at some other tool...? [expert] Internationalization mdk 7.1
In another posting I wrote about mdk 7.2. As I am now back in 7.1 I would like to ask if anyone has had trouble with: Emacs cmds at the console - some of them do not work e b ctrl-d ctrl-e and others. I think its something in the language files. I am using the swedish language. The keyboard bindings of WordPerfect 8 does not work. The do so in every other dist. - even 7.2 3 beta. Some clues? [expert] trouble with mdk 7.2
I bought my mdk 7.2 on 2 CD:s from Cheapbytes. The install whent ok. But then both Gnome and KDE was principly useless. I tried - among other things - to get kppp and kmail running from the menu and they did not. Then I invoked them from a terminal (only rxvt worked). I got error messages like 'kppp path was not found' and 'cannot start Dr Konqi'. I checked that the programs were installed in the right places. Started with a new install and made a new home dir in case something old could be in the way. No - same errors and very few programs could be started. Had the idea to skip Mandrake altogether but downgraded to mdk 7.1 (in that case the internationalization does not work 100 percent) and is still running RH 7.0. Has anybody tried Cheapbytes CD-roms and in that case - any clues as to get 7.2 working from my CD:s. I am sitting with a 56 k modem and downloading the stuff is impossible. Of course DVD [ROM] works under Linux. Linux supports the UFS filesystem [as well as ISO9660, used on certain DVDs]. This is a seperate issue from being able to decode any VOB [video object] files that exist on the disc [in the case of DVD movies] but this is being worked on by the OMS project, who are building a DVD player for linux. That's true [both projects contain some unique code], but StarOffice, in terms of future development, is essentially dead. Re: [expert] Grub Be Gone
Okay, I think I figured it out. I looked on the web a little bit and found this: "There is no concept uninstall in boot loaders, because if you uninstall a boot loader, an unbootable machine would simply remain. So all you need to do is overwrite another boot loader you like to your disk, that is, install the boot loader without uninstalling GRUB. For example, if you want to install the boot loader for Windows, just run FDISK /MBR on Windows. If you want to install LILO (I can't imagine why you want to do such a thing, though), run /sbin/lilo on GNU/Linux. " http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-faq.html#q11 I tried: "fdisk /MBR" in an MS-DOS prompt (didn't even have to leave windows), rebooted, and grub was gone (went directly to windows.).. thanks, Tim - Original Message - From: Tim Faehnle To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 05, 2000 5:48 PM Subject: [expert] Grub Be Gone I'm trying out Linuxes (Linuxi?) I've fooled with Mandrake and now I'm going to try Redhat (don't hurt me), BUT when I installed Redhat, it seems that half of grub was still there. I was thinking that I could just leave grub in there and use it to get to redhat, but that didn't work. In the red hat install I can say "don't install LILO" or "Do install LILO". In either case, my computer boots up to "stage1" but then sits there and never gets to "stage2". And I have to reinstall Mandrake to get to *any* OS. So I figure that I have to uninstall Grub and use LILO or something: Which brings me to my simple question: How do I uninstall Grub? Not so simple question: I like grub better than LILO, can I keep Grub, but use redhat? I know, I know, this is the Mandrake list. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much Tim

[expert] sources for kernel-secure2.2.*.rpm
I have installed LM 7.2 with high security setting. It works fine. I am using this Linux box for NAT and need the NAT to be able to work with H323 properly which is used by NetMeeting. There is a ip_masq_h323.c I found on the web. I think if I recompile the kernel with kernel-sources rpm, I'll loose all the security patches that the secure kernel is complied with. So I need the sources from which secure kernel was compiled so that I can compile ip_masq_h323.c as a module and use it with insmod to enable NetMeeting. Get more from the Web. Tim: First delete Grub: in DOS mode type fdisk /mbr Second: install RedHat, perhaps Lilo don´t run after install (some bugs in RedHat install) so when install Red Hat make a boot floppy during instalation. If Lilo don´t run after instalation, must run Red Hat with boot floppy, and then go to linuxconf and set lilo. Next time you boot lilo run ok. I you have windows NT you must run Red Hat booting from floppy. With win98 or ME you can use Lilo. Sorry foy my bad english. Hope you understand. [expert] Startup script selection at boot time - Anyone?
Dear all, I want to run two different scripts at boot time depending on the lilo configuration. Eg.: If lilo entry A is selected, I want to run script A automaticaly. This script would set up several things, and I want linux to boot into initlevel 3 . On the other hand, if entry B is selected I want to run script B, and Linux to boot into initlevel 5. What do I have to set to be able to do this?! Similar problem: Does anyone know what happens, when someone uses different profiles in LM7.2 for different laptop network confs? Is there a script which runs and sets the network profiles depending on the profiles in lilo.conf (append prof=Office vs Home)? I think this does exactly what I want, I just do not know what happens then...Anyone has an idea? I agree, when I ran windows, I had to make sure that the dang ol registry and the dynamic linking library files (.dll) were all in good shape and that there were no stray/unused ones laying about, otherwise---CRASH! Re: [expert] mail as set-uid root process problem
You could have just done: chmod u-s `which sendmail` which would have removed the setuid bit. Jeff, For what it's worth, 56K modems will connect at a lower speed than 33.6K modems if there is an incompatibility (as there usually is) in the ISP's modem bank. It seems that ALL of the ISP's in this area have modem banks that will revert to the V.34 spec's if they are unable to establish a good connect with V.90. I suspect that this is your problem. I have been scrounging 33.6 hardware modems anywhere I can find them because both my Linux and Winderz boxes connect faster and more reliably when using them. -- Ken Thompson Electrocom Computer Services Payette, Idaho (208) 642-7101 (888) 642-7101 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.nwaa.com Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

Do a clean install! Depending on your laptop, your mileage may vary. I recently installed MDK7.2 on my laptop (Compaq Armada M700) and I was pleasantly surprised. [expert] supermount & floppies
Hi all! I am using the mandrake kernel 2.2.17 with supermount activated (I have tried compiling it into the kernel and as a module) I have the following problem: *) if I cd to a (super)mounted directory on a floppy(e.g. /mnt/floppy/XYZ/ where /mnt/floppy is the mount point for the floppy) and I remove the floppy from the drive, doing an ls leads to an i/o error. Nothing wrong with that. BUT: supermount is unable to mount floppies after this procedure until I reboot my machine. *) before the said procedure, producing i/o error messages takes about 2 seconds. After the procedure it takes about 20 seconds (Maybe this is significant to you...) Does anybody have an idea as to how to solve this problem? Does anybody happily use floppies with supermount without problems? Although I haven't checked, I guess the said behaviour should be the same for CDs... Any hints are greatly appreciated. Re: [expert] Second stage install hangs
Just my 2 cents: never had a problem with a Celeron 433 on an oldie (and goldie) Shuttle 637 board; trying to "upgrade" to a cheap dual board (Asus 2P97DS) and a larger HD, Mandrake would hang in 2-nd stage install, except with a junkie 512k VGA card. The moral: for me, its Shuttle and not Asus; all the new crap I've seen, including BIOS-es soldered on the mobo, tells me Asus now plays the marketing games more than the technical game we were used to. Such a shame. - Original Message - From: "Mark Weaver" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, December 05, 2000 9:50 PM Subject: Re: [expert] Second stage install hangs > Larry, > > Now that's what I call dancing on the razors edge. RE: [expert] Grub Be Gone
This link explains how to install lilo after you have had grub installed: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-faq.html#q11 In short it states: For example, if you want to install the boot loader for Windows, just run FDISK /MBR on Windows. If you want to install LILO (I can't imagine why you want to do such a thing, though), run /sbin/lilo on GNU/Linux. -Original Message- From: civileme [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2000 6:18 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Grub Be Gone On Wednesday 06 December 2000 00:48, you wrote: > > I'm trying out Linuxes (Linuxi?) WD is definately Mark, if there's one thing an observer of the Linux community should learn quickly, the fact that one, or even a few people have trouble with a particular piece of hardware, it's quite possible that most of the people using it won't. Wasn't it you that suggested that each installation is like a snowflake? If there are problems with Celerons I suspect it's because most of them are sitting in boxes marked Hewlett-Packard and Compaq, not because of the processor itself :-) As for WD, you don't like them. That's fine but there are a lot of Linux installations running on them flawlessly and the several times you've said they don't work the responses always suggest otherwise. > falling behind...(another story). As a matter of fact RedHat didn't run > much better for me on my Celeron worstation. Mark, with LM7.2 I can't do an expert install on my AMD K6-2 500 (and not a WD drive in sight). Does that mean I should say that Mandrake isn't compatible with AMD processors? Or rather, should I note that I can do a standard workstation installation and that maybe, just maybe, the installer is having some problems when it hangs somewhat randomly during the applications installation portion? > Now, my AMD at home is another story altogether. RE: [expert] 3Com US Robotics 56K faxmodem problems
Sounds like the new modem is acting just fine, and the problem may be within your lines. 115000 is what your modem will show provided you set it for max connection rate of 115000. Certain modems require in the init string W2 (for my Supra) to show the correct speed, and not the max set by your dialer. -Original Message- From: Jeff Malka [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2000 7:03 AM To: expert mandrake Subject: [expert] 3Com US Robotics 56K faxmodem problems I just purchased a 3Com US Robotics 56K Faxmodem (V.90 and x2). [expert] Alsa and ES1688
Hi all, got a problem getting my sound card working as it's in a laptop and it's not plug and play. It works fine with OSSFree, but I was trying to get the alsa modules from mdk 7.2 to work. So far everything works fine, as I can play audio cd's and wavs and the like, but .mid file state: open /dev/sequencer: No such device. Attached are copies of /etc/modules.conf and /proc/asound/sndstat If anyone knows what's going wrong I'd be interested to know. Re: [expert] Second stage install hangs
Hi Alan, That thought has been looming large the last few days. Especially after reading a post by Tom Brinkman on the Newbie list about hardware. Its a bit frustrating at times because what runs great on a "mut" system that was built from scratch doesn't run very well at all on a system that was bought from a vendor. Again, a lot of what Tom had to say does make a lot of sense. No Mandrake's Updates are _beyond_ the 2.01 release already and the folks taking care of those packages saw no need for regression. This is true in the updates Chris Molnar has been making available for some time, (and they tested as well or better than the 2.01), and the current CVS stuff in Cooker which shows intensive development with many new features and many broken ones. Re: [expert] StarOffice Mailing List?
StarOffice is now OpenOffice, so feature requests and comments, as well as bug reports should go to one of the lists at openoffice.org. I'm not sure if Sun [www.sun.com] still maintain StarOffice lists, or everythings converted into OpenOffice, butSun definitely do have a support for StarOffice 5.x section on their website. Re: [expert] Grub Be Gone
I'll probably use LILO when it comes to it, but i still can't even get it installed at the moment. When I tried to install LILO with the Redhat, my computer wouldn't even get to the LILO command line. It would only get to the "stage1" part of Grub. So I think I need to get rid of Grub first and I'm not sure how to do that. Does anyone know? Do I need to delete grub files as well? Where do they reside? [expert] The mysterious libqt-mt.so.2
This mysterious file is part of QT 2.1 or later in many distributions, [Red Hat and Connectiva] but isn't included as part of Mandrakes packages. I'm not sure what the purpose of the library is, [perhaps, logically, it shouldn't be packaged along with QT] but it is necessary for avifile, a DivX ;-) player for Linux. Does anyone know what the file, whether it should be inside a QT package or somewhere else, etc? RE: [expert] Grub Be Gone
Tim Use fdisk/MBR to remove Grub and then you can install and boot RH LILO. You can use Grub with other OSes but it will need to be installed to 1 of your OSes.
