Thanks!
I had already read that WD and UDMA5 give problems but my hard drive
WD400BB-32CXA was bought in april 2002. Were can I find the generation
info that my drive has no good CRC checking at UDMA3,4,5? I searched the
Western Digital website (wdc.com) but they don't give that kind of
information. Do the new WD400BB drives do correct CRC checking?

You say "They may calculate the first in a series of writes, but not
all.": where can I find that kind of insight info, I searched the net
but apart from some of your postings haven't found much else.

I don't have a 40-pin cable. If I use the hdparm command
hdparm -k1 -d1 -X66 /dev/hda (66:UDMA2), would this give the same
effect? Can changing the UDMA setting with hdparm give problems/errors?
I also downloaded from the WDC website Data Lifeguard Tools that can
change the udma setting on the hard drive itself. If I used this to
change the UDMA to 2, would my linux have no problems with this (I'm a
a little scared to use hdparm or WDC tools, in "man hdparm" they state
"Use with extreme caution! This feature includes zero protection for
the unwary, and an unsuccessful outcome may result in severe filesystem
corruption!") ?

How can I prevent CRC errors? Can an IDE-cable suddenly become bad, or
experience interference, I read about twisted cables, ...
"The HDD should NOT be mounted near the power supply due to fan issues.
The fan in the supply causes the HDD to misinterpret CRC-checksums and
produces CRC-errors. Also, high-speed CD drives should not be near the
HDD" : fan causing CRC-errors? CD drives ?

How much slower is UDMA2 than UDMA5? (hdparm -t), You said somewhere
that the performance does not differ much?

I have a Toshiba laptop- Satellite 1750 .It uses a built in Crystal
audio cs4281 which worked well under 8.2,now when i boot up it stalls for
2-5 minutes. the only error message I can find is:

/var/log/kernel/warnings:Feb 11 00:19:49 mobile kernel: cs4281:
Unable to locate any cs4281 device with valid IDs 0x1013-0x6005

at some later point the sound initializes properly and works. Can someone
give me any hints on where to look to eliminate the delay. I have had
this problem with the 2.4.19-16 ,and -24 kernels, both stock and locally
compiled from Mandrake sources.

Re: [expert] Syncing Handspring Visor Deluxe?!

2003-02-11 Thread Todd Franklin

I ran into the same problem.  kpilot daemon interferes with jpilot's sync,
so I turned off kpilot daemon and jpilot seems to work better.  Still having
problems though.  Almost always never works on the first sync.  I never have
gotten kpilot working properly.  I have a handspring visor deluxe as well.

Tell us which problems and you might get a useful answer. Some
things to consider:

1) USB devices don't exist in Linux until there's a signal on the
bus; there isn't one with Visor/Clie/&c until you press hotsync. 2)
look in the log file after pressing the button and you'll find out
whether the kernel is recognizing that something happened and
loading the proper module without errors. You'll also see what port
the thing's going to show up at.
3) user-space programs won't work until the above is straightened
out.

I have created /dev/ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1, set them to 666, then
symlinked ttyUSB1 to /dev/pilot.

In KPilot, I have set the program to use /dev/pilot at 9600 baud.

I hook up the hotsync block to the USB port, push the hotsync button,
the Visor wakes, KPilot wakes, giving a desktop icon, I click it, and

The kernel messages are basically the same whether or not the Visor
syncs.

The problem that I have is that I can't figure out why KPilot syncs or
fails to sync.

Is there something that I am doing/have done/will do wrong? Why does
it seem that I am so close to consistantly syncing yet so far away?

#2 How do I hibernate, I would like to be able to hibernate instead of

The system is an Acer Travel mate 507DX Celeron 466 with 96Mb ram and 4.3Gb

Any help greatly appreciated (even if it is an RTFM (just tell me what part)

I have always found devfs unreliable - probably others have too and is
why it's apparently undergoing (or at least was undergoing) intense
dismemberment by Al Viro and others for the upcoming 2.6 kernel. I'm
running fairly old jpilot (0.99.1-0.3mdk) and pilot-link (0.9.5-3mdk)
packages too so I'd think newer versions would probably only improve
support. Don't know what effect newer versions may have on the steps
needed to make it work though.

Ken,

I notice you have cableone which I assume that means you have a cablemodem?
I live in Boise and have the same service

The reason I bring that up is that I'm curious if you could download
Mozilla/Netscape with the Java JRE and see if that applet works in that
browser. With a cablemodem, that shouldn't take too long. Also, is there any
chance that you could go back to 3.05 and compare the output of the java
consoles?

Best regards,

I don't know what might have changed, as I don't use KDE. I find it very
implausible that upgrading KDE screwed up your $PATH. The snippet you
posted here:
...
> > >

shows a pathing problem. That's typically not an issue for java running
in a browser because you've told the browser where to find java; so I
don't know what you're running into with this particular applet;
however, I would certainly want to look at konq's equivalent of Help |
About Plugins and make sure that the java you're using is the one you
think it is. $PATH is a problem when running java programs from bash as
in the snippet you posted.

Anyone else having problems with this game under v9.0? I can play it just -so-

Here is the error message:

[darklord@darkforce darklord]$ ut2003

Backtrace:

I've applied all 4 patches that I could find to update UT2003 (this is the
full retail game but it does it with the demo as well).

Thanks.

I get that too, I don't think it's fatal.

hmmm, maybe it's that old memory thing. I recall in earlier kernels
like the one in 9.0 mine would slow down at times real bad. I don't
guess mine ever crashed, but using mem=nopentium helped my issues out
(amd system). you might try that.

I starting having this exact trouble with my Visor Deluxe when I
upgraded to 9.0 (it worked beautifully on 8.1 every time). I have
disabled devfs, there's no kpilotd running, and syncing is still
unreliable.

But I've finally been able to get it to work with jpilot on at least one
out of every four attempts, better than one out of twenty. The steps
below assume you've got jpilot configured to talk to the correct device
(/dev/ttyUSB1 in my case, though /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 should be the same),
the device has the correct permissions, etc.

1. Manually remove the usbserial and visor modules if they're loaded:

  rmmod visor
  rmmod usbserial

2. Start a "local sync" on the Visor.

3. 'tail -f /var/log messages' and wait until you see something like
this message come out (make take 10 seconds):

  Feb 11 10:32:10 x kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor / Palm 4.0 / Clii 4.x
converter now attached to ttyUSB1 (or usb/tts/1 for devfs)

4. Start jpilot and press the "Sync" button.

5. If jpilot seems to hang, close it, cancel the sync on the Visor, and
go to step 1.

It's pretty annoying but I'm too lazy to debug the pilot-link library to try
to figure out if it's the cause, or if it's a driver problem.

[expert] problems with 2.4.19-24mdk

2003-02-11 Thread Jayce D. Dowell
I recently upgraded to the 2.4.19-24mdk kernel (complied from the srpm) and am
having a rather annoying problem. About every 10-15 minutes, the system
resets itself and starts up again. I have looked at all of the logs and can
not really find anything unusually, expect for a series of '^@' right at when
the machine resets. I have tired the i586 kernel from Mandrake and I get the
same results. Any ideas?

More adventurous than I... =) Sounds like a good plan tho... I may decide
to continue tracking cooker over the long term this time around... we'll
see. I usually do the base install for a while to test security updates
live... if I can get this UML stuff to work properly, I may not need to do
that anymore (use UML containers instead of testing "live").

I'm thinking of an easy way to do upgrades... and of course, sanity checks.
Ie. think of this prior to an upgrade:

cd /etc
cvs commit
[reboot_installclean]
cd /etc
cvs diff
[check for anything major]
cvs co

Somewha abbreviated, but you get the idea. I think it would work awesome...
one would just have to get used to the many CVS/ directories. =)

I doubt the 2MB card would do any good... IIRC, it's a 2D card as well. The
AGP card should be ok tho. My workstation is definitely not a gaming
machine... (well, it would make a killer gaming machine if I got larger LCDs

I hear ya. Much nicer to play stuff native. Heck, people should just start
building games for Win/Mac/Linux.

Hmmm... speaking of which, I'm still waiting for NeverWinter Nights for
Linux (the client). I'm starting to get a little irked with Bioware... I
bought the damn game thinking the Linux client was coming soon, and have
played a total of 30mins on it. I'm starting to think about asking for my
money back, unfortunately it's been so long I doubt they would do it. =(

The X66 is safe to use as you have described it. What is dangerous is
overdriving.

Win98 isn't going to give you more than what it has drivers for, so the
DataLifeguard should not be necessary. Also, IIRC, DataLifeGuard phones home
and gives you warning if your drive is about to fail (and it works on non-WDs
too).

Yes you are not going to find much info on the WD drive and their strategy to
produce cheap drives ... These days they say they are fully compatrible with
advanced UDMA, but offer no details, which is itself suspicious. The last
time I exchanged emails with Andre Hedrick, we were still experiencing
problems, but I have been out of the loop for some time.

I wrote a program for 8.0/8.1 called drakopt which exhaustively tested options
under hdparm for a given rig of drives, and set up the optimization. On some
of the rigs the Crashtesters had, when the drive was set to highest rated
speed and another drive was on the same channel there would be crosstalk
errors. That was not supposed to happen either; only one drive on an IDE
channel is supposed to be on at a time, but it was happening when one of a
pair was a WD. (As an aside from this, if you have enough IDE channels to do
it, put one hard drive per channel and use the other (slave) side for CDROM
or Zip or whatever, not only to avoid crosstalk but for efficient operation.)

As for the variance of speed, consider this...

The PCI bus is 33MHz and 32 bits wide--the data transfer cable for IDE is 16
bits wide and up to 133Mhz, already twice what the PCI bus can handle, so the
"speed" has to be burst mode cause there are controllers for IDE at 133MHz
which plug into the PCI bus. Overwhelmingly, the consideration has to be
with the disk itself, where data spins on or off of it at 1/60 the rate of
the interface, approximately. Buffering helps, and lookahead helps, and
elevator tuning helps (yes check out man elvtune), but the mechanical end of
things is very slow compared to the rest of it.

To increase disk speed, the most productive approaches are:

*Increase spin rate
*Software or hardware driven striping (RAID0 RAID4 RAID5) with multiple disks,
especially if chunk size is controlled so that the switch to a different
drive most frequently occurs when the first drive would need to step.

The pinout on IDE cables is available here:

http://www.howstuffworks.com/ide3.htm

Of course with like 30 nanoseconds pulse width and data transfer on rising and
falling edges, we are talking about something where a secondary cosmic ray is
a significant noise source. Not much charge moves on those cables at the
interface voltage in th

Hi Jack. Thanks for the reply. Well, actually - its using the 3123 driver just
like one of the other comps. Overheating - well, I checked in BIOS after a
few hours and its reporting 50 c. AFAIK, that should be fine, right? Also,
its not the whole system that is crashing, just this one game that segfaults
back to the desktop (I start it from a term.). The system itself sets for
hours with no problems - never crashed like that.

Any other ideas? Thanks again!

Right. According to the readme in one of the patches, its expecting Xi
Graphics stuff - which of course, is not there. Like you said, its not fatal
and not my real problem.

Tried that once on someone else's suggestion already - didn't help. A post
from the Linux Game Tome says that if you have your own computers name in
/etc/hosts that it causes problems. I do have that, can change it, but then I
get system slowdown (windows won't open fast). Can't tell it helped either.

Also, one said that it was a glibc problem, and a symbolic link was needed
between /lib/i686/libpthread-0.9.so and /lib/libpthread.so.X? There is a file
by the name of libpthread-0.9.so in each directory already but they are not
the same size. I tried linking with libpthread.so.0 (not sure what to use?)
but it didn't help.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! :-)

it's not only for developers, but also for testing.
I use pretty much everything from cooker, including the latest kde, which
I update very day. most things are rock stable, but gnome 2.2 didn't even

I just wanted to warn the others to wait for a more stable release from

Hi civilme,

Is this true when the slave does not function in DMA mode, or at a much
lower DMA mode? I've heard that IDE defaults to the mode of the slowest

Wild shot in the dark here.
cd /lib
mv i686 i686.nouse
ldconfig

Then see if it still does it (probably requires a runlevel change, maybe
even a reboot). This will make it use the i586 optimized glibc instead
of the i686 optimized glibc.

Good luck.

The faster the master,

It wouldn't matter which way round if you were right.

Actually about six months back or so I did a relative speed test using a
series
of different UDMA drives on an enhanced system under various O/S platforms to
see if anything had changed since the last time. Under *certain* conditions,
that axiom no longer applies. However, I also willingly admit, despite doing a
*lot* of skull-banging, I haven't figured out why, or for that matter, what
has
changed in how hard drive parameters are recognized under Linux.

For example, under Mandrake using a fast high-speed 40 gigabyte drive, in
approximately 40% of the time it was recognized by Mandrake as a fast drive,
and
deployed appropriately. If the slave was *also* a UDMA drive, it, too, was
configured correctly. Even a lowly Iomega Zip Drive was configured as a fast
access drive. Go figure, sez I. I even tried it using several different brands
of drives, since I was neither scientific nor exacting about it. When
it
worked it was a thing of marvel.

However, just now having stuck my foot so nicely into my mouth, I couldn't
then
account for the other 60% of the time when one or both drives were recognized
and configured as pokey slow EIDE drives. I repeated this test four or five
times, and even had a fast drive be recognized two *different* ways several
times. I know instinctively it is in the libraries somewhere, but I don't have
a
clue.

FWIW, I was able to replicate the same test results using Micro$oft Windoze 98
and backwards a time or two. For the most part, Windows 98 Second Edition and
upwards recognizes the drive geometry correctly every time.

Can I buy an axiom now?

I use my mom's computer for testing stuff that should work on

It still uses power :o(

I want the ability to dump the ram to HDD then power down.

Upon powering up the laptop takes the ram file on the HDD and puts it back
into ram

Can this be done ?

Following up with what Mark was saying I went to the pilot link
homepage, and with much further discussion, I see they are touting
their 0.11.7 tarball and rpm. Apparently, they found some bugs, and I
am wondering if that is what is my problem.

I found 0.11.7 as pilot-link-0.11.7-1mdk.i586.rpm which is currently
in the cooker.

I also find that this rpm and the source code are requiring libc.so.6,
part of the glibc 2.3 package, so I attempted to install it as an
rpm:

# rpm -Uvh glibc-2.3.1-7mdk.i586.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
initscripts < 6.91-18mdk conflicts with glibc-2.3.1-7mdk
glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk
glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk
glibc = 2.2.5-16mdk is needed by glibc-devel-2.2.5-16mdk

initscripts is just what it sounds like, and I am not sure if I want
to mess with it. I am not sure what locales is, as I have not heard
of that package or its importance.

I am asking the assembled, should I force the installation of glibc?
Should I just keep the upgrade going, upgrading initscripts and
locales? Or should I wait for 9.1 to come out, and hope that the
package pilot-link 0.11.7 is on it? Or should I continue pounding
away, even if others are having a bad time with it?

I have also been unsucessfully messing with the 2.4.20 kernel, and I
have noted that there is something in the USB drivers about slow
connecting USB devices. Maybe the Visor is one? And I wonder if the
2.4.19-16mdk kernel has it configured for slow devices?

I've heard (I think) Jack talk about a suspend to swap program that
might do this but I'm not sure. I'm just trying to find a kernel from
MDK that has a working apmd (beyond the stock 9.0 kernel that is.)

I've had similar results but specifically when it's a maxtor drive and a
non maxtor in the slave position. They didn't play nice at all. Now if
I had the Maxtor paired up with another one running the same DMA
level... no problem.

Any chance you have Microsoft money working? Codeweaver couldn't make it
work.. If I could get either Microsoft money working or find a simple money
manager for linux I liked, I'd be 98% free of microsoft. At home anyways. :)
Now if I can just land that gig working on unix at work..

I'd start by swapping out the ram from one of the others and seeing of the
problem follows. If not, try video card and then... well you get the idea. :)

It still may matter. But I don't know - that's why I am asking :-)

Supposing you have a UDMA 100 as master, and a UDMA 33 as slave.
Conceivably they may both drop down to UDMA 33, and the master runs a
bit faster than the slave simply because it is the master.

Maybe that is not what will happen. Either way, I'm curious to know
what the experts think! I've heard conflicting stories from different
folks (mostly off this list).

 Yes, I recognize that tune. Try a Sanyo-Toshiba low-speed
drive and any Maxtor high-speed drive on the same IDE channel. They simply
won't
work, even if you call Maxtor and order one of their service & support books,
which they don't even sell anymore, anyway.

Have you tried Kmoney or sqlLedger? There is also FreeMoney (I like the

OK, your prescription for this affliction is simple:

Write one cli statement, with one "grep", one "awk", and one "cut",

Normally that is all true *EXCEPT* there is a differential factor that I just
mentioned to someone else on this list about Maxtor drives running on the same
IDE channel as a non-Maxtor drive, regardless whether they match or not, will
not "cooperate".

Without doing a *lot* of testing I'd hazard a guess that is as good a
generalization as you could find anywhere, and probably better than some...
with
the possible exception of Maxtor drives and most other non-Maxtor drives, as
noted previously. Another combination I remember vaguely that ran into
troubles
in the early testing I've done was using a Seagate EIDE slow drive on the
primary and a fast Seagate on the secondary, which only worked in 16 bit mode,
something else I never understood. 8-)

I reinstalled a fresh 9.0 on the main system (athalon 1200, 256Mb mem) and the
output of the java console just basically gives the version of java when I
load the ssh applett from the firewall in Konqueror. No error messages. I
installed from the java bin file from SUN and that un-tars to an RPM from
which I installed the java. Kaffee wasn't installed on the 1200 and I removed
it from the 9.1b3 machine.. It almost seems to be KDE related. Again it
was/is working just fine under 9.0 and KDE 3.0.3, I had upgraded to 3.0.5
before upgrading to 3.1 and it worked there also. Not until I installed KDE
3.1 did I have any problems.. The funny thing is, I installed KDE 3.1 on a
friends machine with the same java version and it put it in /usr/lib/java, on
mine it goes to /usr/java. WTF?? Both my machines are in /usr/java
Thanks for sticking with me on this. Oh, Yes I do have a cable modem, another
story for another day
