[expert] How to use/share cups printers with vmware3.2

2003-02-14 Thread W. Kasberg
I am using Mandrake 9.0 and vmware 3.2.
On a virtual disk I have installed Win98 as guest system.
Filesharing through vmware-smb works well. But I cannot use the cups printers.
They are shown on my guest system but I cannot connect to them ( I am using a
HP 6P on parallel port and 2 other HP printers on USB port.

Any hint is appreciated

If you have the X server running, you can telnet/ssh to your Mandrake
machine, export the display with the following command (assumes you're
using bash):

export DISPLAY=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:0

(xxx... is the IP of your Mac)

and just run commands from the Mandrake session, like "evolution".

Sounds like you already have your X server set up, but I use OroborOSX
on my iBook (http://oroborosx.sourceforge.net/) for this purpose.

Have you tried that win4lin? It sounds like a way for me to get one step

[expert] TyanThunder Pro-CPU heat and hardware integrity

2003-02-14 Thread gikoreno

Hey everyone,

I am not sure this is supposed to be in the expert list, but since it's more hardware
related I sent it here.

I just got a Tyan Thunder Pro system with two Athlon 2000+ CPUs.
The power supply I was provided was an ATXGES one, and I just trusted the OEM supplier
to have ensured it was the right one for the board.
Little did I know. As soon as I connected it, I heard a bang, and there you are,
nothing seemed to work. I went to the store to get a replacement and an explanation,
and they didn't know what it was until I read on the net that while the Thunder
version does need an ATXGES, the Thunder Pro is incompatible (although it has the
ATXGES connector), thus it should not be powered by an ATXGES. They replaced the
power supply and handed the rest of the system back to me, as is.

Since this is going to be a production server, I need to know if the hardware got
damaged... After a memory test (the one supplied on the Mandrake Linux CD), memory
seems fine. Both CPUs seem to be recognized. POST seemed fine, and I installed the SMP
kernel and Mandrake Linux and it boots and seems to work.

My first question is: What else can I do to make sure nothing got damaged?

Second, I installed lm_sensors and gkrellm, and I get a 72 degC on the case heat and
the CPU2, while I get 76-77 degC on the CPU1.

Do you have any such results from the Tyan Thunder boards, and could you tell me if
it's normal? I find it awefully high, and I opened the case, and it seems to me more
like 30 degC in the case... Why is CPU1 so much higher than CPU2? is it a
configuration thing of lm_sensors (I ran sensors-detect of course), i.e. just an error
reading, or is it that one of the CPUs or the motherboard is busted... How could I
test them?

Thanks a lot for any advice on the matter,

gikoreno

P3-M/800, 384M RAM. Performance was fine with W98 in the virtual, poorer
with W2K in the virtual of course but then W2K is dog slow on regular
hardware too.

[expert] domain authentication using browser

2003-02-14 Thread Jack Coates
Hey,

I have a intranet website that I occasionally need to use, which does
windows domain authentication. If I view it with IE, it pops up a
UID/PWD/Domain auth window. Ditto for co-workers using Moz on Windows.
Moz/Galeon on Linux gives: "Error: Access is Denied." This smells like
browser detection, so I switched to Konq and set the ID string to IE on
Windows. That gives me:
An error occured while loading https://[intranet.company.com]:
Unknown Authorization method!

So, I've got a site that is looking for the NT domain authentication
ticket. I'm guessing that I need to have Samba do something along the
lines of authenticating with the domain, but I don't know how to get
Konq to present the proper authentication while accessing the IIS
server.

Any ideas?

A stress test like Linpack might be a good idea, or even the production
load with an artificial amount of the expected traffic.

First use sensors from the command line, gkrellm might be looking at the
wrong fields. Next try experimenting with different chipset modules.
Sometimes lm_sensors will autodetect and load modules that are wrong,
but seem to work. Except for the fact that they spit out bogus
information, of course :-)

[expert] Samba printing

2003-02-14 Thread Anne Wilson
I have a win98 box that needs to print to my local printer. I tried setting
it up under samba to use the cups printers, but couldn't get it to work.
Then Stephen Kuhn told me to load the windows printer driver onto the box,
print nothing until it had finished all its rebooting schemozzle, then print
a test page (having swapped the driver line in smb.conf). It worked fine.

I don't need to use the printer very often from that box, but now it seems
that it simply isn't working any more. Today I uninstalled it, re-installed
it, but still I get 'Windows was unable to print this page. Do you want to
start the troubleshooted?"

It worked once, so why not now?

Relevant part of smb.conf follows:

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
# to allow user 'guest account' to print.
guest ok = yes
writable = no
printable = yes
create mode = 0700
# =
# print command: see above for details.

print command = lpr-cups -P %p -o raw %s -r
# using client side printer drivers.
; print command = lpr-cups -P %p %s # using cups own drivers (use generic
# PostScript on clients).
# The following two commands are the samba defaults for printing=cups
# change them only if you need different options:

; lprm command = cancel %p-%j

[print$]

Any ideas, please?

Well, that's why they called it a Thunder Pro, obviously, the only

Good point. I didn't think of that. I've not had time to even think of 9.1

[expert] Visor woes Continue

2003-02-14 Thread Clif Caldwell
Please feel free to ignore this if your tired of this question or if
you are very kind send me the info to my email address.

I have been using a serial cradle with my Handspring Visor but it is
incredibly slow. After the recent discussions here I decided to try
USB again. I am lost. How can you go about linking /dev/visor or
/dev/pilot to a device that doesn't exist until you sync. Also how can
you make sure HOTPLUG is enabled and functioning. I have monitored
/dev/usb/tty/ and during a sync operation I don't see any devices being
created.

I tried to disable devfs in Mandrake Control Center but it continues to run.
I did this to try using some of the suggestions put forth on this list.

Basically I'm lost.

Start from the beginning or send me to some site other than the Visor/Linux site.
Been there and tried it all.

Using ML 9.0.

Thanks,
Clif

I am playing around with Xnest, and what I am looking for is a gui app that
will allow me to, connect via xdmcp to the host of my choice, in a nested
window. I know I can type 'Xnest -query host :2' and it will work, but I
want to know if there is a small gui app that I can click on, and it'll ask
"local, remote (enter ip here)" or something similar... if there already is
one, that is.. if not, then I might have found myself a small project :)

In case your findings come to you off this list, could you please forward any
information you may find about this? I've begun playing with Xnest, too, and
would like to have a gui tooie. 8-)

If you don't use devfs, the you will be able to see your USB devices
before hotsyncing, then you can create the link.

> I tried to disable devfs in Mandrake Control Center but it continues to run.
> I did this to try using some of the suggestions put forth on this list.

I you use LILO, edit your /etc/lilo.conf file, for the selection you
use, add the line:

append="devfs=nomount"

Don'f forget to /sbin/lilo, or you can add devfs=nomount at the lilo
prompt if you wish.

If you use GRUB, sorry, I have never used it so I would be lost.

Once you have this, then you can do:

ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot

Also add visor=yes to your /etc/sysconfig/usb file.

It does work, I have my Visor Prism syncing via USB with Evolution,
although it did seem to take for ever to get it all working, and
versions of Evolution > 1.0.8 and < 1.2.1 syncing does not work, I have
used it with both 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.

Hope this helps.

[expert] mozilla and printing

2003-02-14 Thread Lorne
Okay,

I was sure this was discussed here before, but I can't find it. I use 9.0 and
mozilla. I am using cups printing. From Kmail I can print just fine. But from
within Mozilla I can not. It has a funky lpr syntax and I don't know how to
configure this so I can print to my remote smb printer. Any help appreciated.
here is the default syntax: PostScript/default. Then in properties it is: lpr
${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME:+'-P'}${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME}

>From within Kmail it is simply name: HP4 and print system currently in use:
Cups

My mozilla install is as done by default by Mandrake during initial setup.
Nothing modified. Well I tried, but it didn't help. :)

I'm thinking something is messed up in the base install since nothing else
shows up in the drop down other than the postscript default. It seems there
should be some other choices. I'm sure it is something simple. I had tried to
modify the config file to no avail.

No problem, but please next time, don't reply to an existing message to
start a new thread. There is a header named "In-Reply-To:" and you
pressing the reply button makes every thread aware reader put your new

Just press New Message and type in the listname.

The symlink can exist and point to nothing. That's ok, but not
necessarily desirable.

Something is getting created, you just have to figure out which ones.
Kill the running devfsd daemon and then start it in debug mode to see
what it's doing. In debug mode it won't daemonize, but will print
everything to stdout.

killall devfsd
devfsd -d /dev

Default is everything commented out, so it's whatever the kernel
natively recognizes. hdparm is only necessary if the kernel doesn't
quite recognize the ide controller chipset and you want to try to wring
every bit of performance you can out of it.

make sure you use an xterm or something within X, and not something like
Terminal.app (although this depends if you're using Apple's X... I've not
tried it yet but the distinction may be less fuzzy with Apple's X).

That's how I run Komodo on my mac when I need to... as it's Linux-only and
x86-only (so can't even run it in mandrake/ppc, more's the pity).

What I know about the mozilla print command is that you can change it to
what you want but it won't be saved for the next session, so you have to
change it each sesssion. There is a bug about this at mozilla bugzilla.
For instance, I can change this to kprinter --stdin and get the
kprinter dialog to choose printers and parameters. I don't know about
printing to a remote smb printer but maybe that is accessible in
kprinter for you or maybe it is a matter of adding --stdin to the end of
the print command that works for you on the command line.

I do this with VNC all the time. My desktop runs tight vnc but only
inits to run level 3 ... then from work etc I can get into it no
problem.

PS rfbdrake and Remote Desktop Connection both provide access this way

ooh boy, a religious war! heh-heh :-) Actually VNC does use less
bandwidth, but X is still more responsive for me, even over relatively
low-bandwidth high-latency links, because X isn't doing the screen
scrape and poll-my-mouse crud. Now if you're using a pixmapped theme and

If MDK ever gets a regular ask-for-a-feature feature, I'm going to ask
for a way to set the default print commands of all environments from the
control center. I'm a big fan of xpp and CUPS -- I print to xpp as if it
were lpr, and it pops up a dialogue showing what printers are available
on this LAN and some options like number of copies.

Everything in that file is commented out, ah now I understand Todd's
reply ("Default is everything commented out, so it's whatever the kernel
natively recognizes. hdparm is only necessary if the kernel doesn't
quite recognize the ide controller chipset and you want to try to wring
every bit of performance you can out of it. Todd")

No, hdparm is not installed in my freshly installed Mandrake 9.0 yet
dmesg shows:
"Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2

UDMA(100)"

for hda it reports UDMA(100), the ide controller chipset is recognized
as VIA vt8233 (rev 00) IDE UDMA100 controller.
I think it is this part of the kernel that is responsible for it:
"usr/src/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/drivers/ide/pci/via82cxxx.c"

No, it is a booting floppy disk, the utility changes the UDMA setting
on the hard disk itself.

No, but on my new install of ML9.0 I did, install didn't tell if it
found any badblocks.

I already reinstalled ML9.0, but I tried on this new install
"e2fsck -f -c /dev/hda2": and it returned a bunch of errors. And this
is after a fresh install. I'll complain about this in another thread.

Re: [expert] adding scsi tape drive

tc,hago

harddrake2 does see the scsi contoller, where I am having difficulty
is setting up the device files in /dev for the tape drive.

As for baking up there are many ways to do that g(tar) is very
good. Have not looked at dump or or some of the others that are
offered on MD 9.0.

I wish I could just do boot -r and let the system scan and setup
the new device files, but...that is not an option.

At this point I am about to reload the system while the scsi card
and tape drive are in the system. I really do not want to as I
would have to put everything back that has been setup and without
a backup method it makes that kinda difficult, but I have done it
before.

Thanks for all of your help.

e2fsck -f -c /dev/hdX can do it for you now, make sure you are in
single user mode though and your HD is mounted ro.

If they were badblock errors your HD has failed, replace it and your

Of course a religious war. Whatdya expect form an old alterboy!
*grin*. The reasons you don't like VNC is why IMHO MDK had the wisdom
to switch to tightVNC. It doesn't do the poll-my-mouse crud (The
concept is the mouse is on the local box why draw it twice. So they use
a 1x1px spot on the screen at the tip of your local mouse. I've used it
over a 56k connection with iceWM as the wm and it was a bit clunky but
faster than pcNowhere on Broadband and screen updates paints and lauches
where much faster.

[expert] ML9.0: patch VIA to enable UDMA100 not installed but yet reporting UDMA100, Cycle time 120 ns???

2003-02-14 Thread vatbier
I WROTE THE Western Digital Data Lifeguard Utilities to a floppy disk:
tested my WD400BB-32CXA0 No errors.
Changed with the Ultra Management utility the UDMA setting on the
disk itself from UDMA5 (100) TO UDMA2 (33):
ML9.0 and ML8.2 report in dmesg: UDMA(33)
Win XP reports also UDMA2.
I tested in ML8.2:
  hdparm /dev/hda: using_dma=1(on)
  hdparm -Tt /dev/hda: 27,23 MB/s
  hdparm -I /dev/hda: DMA ... *udma2
  cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns
Changed back from UDMA2 (33) to UDMA5 (100)
Now I got these results:
  hdparm -Tt /dev/hda: 27 MB/s
HUH?SAME AS UDMA2 ??
  hdparm -I /dev/hda: DMA ... *udma5
  cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns
HUH? 120ns??

SEE http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/modes.htm UDMA:
"
This table shows all of the current Ultra DMA modes, along with
their cycle times and maximum transfer rates:

Ultra DMA Cycle Time Maximum Transfer
Mode (nanoseconds)Rate (MB/s)
Mode 0 240 16.7
Mode 1 160 25.0
Mode 2 120 33.3
Mode 3 90 44.4
Mode 4 60 66.7
Mode 5 40 100.0

The cycle time shows the speed of the interface clock; the clock's
frequency is the reciprocal of this number (see here for more on
clocking.) The maximum transfer rate is four times the reciprocal of
the cycle time--double transition clocking means each cycle has two
transfers, and each transfer moves two bytes (16 bits). "

UDMA5 should have cycle time: 40ns
Why does hdparm -I /dev/hda report
"cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns" ?
Is this a bug of hdparm?
Or does the cycle time in hdparm means something else?
Or could it be that the UDMA5 of my hard drive gives the same speed as
UDMA2?

Then I found on viaarena.com this patch for ML8.2:
VIA ML8.2 ATA133-100 Patch 686B-8231-8233x-8235 ver 0.91A.gz
contains a patch file mdk8.2-patch-2.4.18-vpide.gz date: 20/9/02
and a readme.pdf:
VIA ML8.2 ATA133-100 Patch Readme.pdf:

"hdparm -t /dev/hda: sustained transfer rate of the disk reads:

VT8233 Original Kernel 23,7 MB/sec
   rebuilt kernel with 39,75 MB/sec
   Patch IDE

Success of kernel patching: dmesg:
"VP_IDE: VIA vt8233 (rev 00) IDE UDMA100 controller on pci00:11.1
Note the data transfer for VT8233 has changed from 33 to 100"

HUH MY dmesg already states UDMA100 but
hdparm -t /dev/hda on my ML8.2 is only 26,67 MB/sec

Hm, I remember that my ML8.2 has no original kernel, I installed a new
one from cooker during the summer.
So either my kernel is already patched and for some other reason only
manages 26,67 MB/sec for sustained transfer rate or it isn't patched
yet and incorrectly states that I have a UDMA100 driver.

hdparm on my ML9.0 shows the same speeds. Does ML9.0 has this patch from
VIA already included?

How in Linux can I test the burst speed which should come close to
the UDMA speed: 100 MB/sec (in article below: +/- 87 MB/sec) ?

In this article they tested speeds in Windows
"http://www.tecchannel.de/hardware/817/index.html: Client / Komponenten
/ VIA Chipsets slow down PCI cards: Vom 21.12.2001, Update am 04.02.2002
VIA Chipsets slow down PCI cards: a driver patch is available to boost
burst speed closer to 100 MB/sec
...
The speed while doing sequential transfers from the hard drive media
itself is actually much lower than that. High end IDE drives max out at
about 40 MBytes/s currently. AHA BUT I ONLY GET
   26,67 MB/sec
If you consider the overhead, these drives
can only push older Ultra-ATA/66-controllers to their limits."

What is a normal sustained transfer rate for UDMA5 in Linux ( what does
"hdparm -t /dev/hda" return on your computer)?
How in Win XP can I test the sustained transfer rate like in Linux with
the command "hdparm -t /dev/hda" ? Would it be the same speed as in
Linux ?

I first changed in /etc/fstab hda2 to ro (read-only).

I pressed no when asked to fix things, when it asked to create a

/dev/hda2 allthough in /etc/fstab it says ro.
How come that a directory could be created by e2fsck in a partition that
has read-only access?

I'm not sure what e2fsck does, I think it didn't find badblocks
("Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): done"), is this correct?

I'll have to reinstall ML9.0 ( for the 4th time, bah).
How can I be certain that it'll be installed correctly?
How many other files have been compromised? "rpm -Va" isn't sufficient
to check a complete linux installation, is it?
I don't know what the errors above mean.
And what has caused this corruption of files? Is it memory, hard disk,
IDE cable, IDE controller, UDMA, CPU, cooling, CD-Writer,...?
Did it happen at installation of ML9.0, afterwards?

In thread "ML9.0:file system completely crashed ext3,"could not find
mime type",kde3.0.3" I began to think it might have been the bad UDMA5
implementation of my Western Digital hard drive but now I'm not sure
wether it might be because of something else.

I tested my 512 MB memory a couple of times with memtest86 (not enough I
know), I tested with a utility from WD my hard drive: didn't found any
errors.

J.Grant replied:
"If they were badblock errors your HD has failed, replace it and your
problems might go away."
