Have you checked the spool directory and watched what actually happens when

Re: [expert] 9.1: Icons for Removable Devices

2003-04-05 Thread Frederic Soulier
Hi

I've been following this thread about icons for removable devices but
I'm quite puzzled by the way it looks on my box (installed with 9.1 from
scratch, not upgraded from 9.0 so there is no leftover).

In my /home//Desktop directory I do not have all these .desktop
files (except a Home.desktop).

Could someone briefly explain exactly how these dynamic icons are
handled and the corresponding hook up scripts (hotplug?)

I'd like to control the naming of those icons and/or be able to get rid
of them altogether and replace them with my own static icons.

[expert] LM9.1: DVD ejects automatically

2003-04-05 Thread Frederic Soulier
Hi

On a LM9.1 I did install mplayer from Plf and it was all working fine (I
could play any region DVDs).

Then after a few days (I have no clue why it does that now) the DVD
started to act strangely. Basically when I insert a DVD movie that used
to play just fine the DVD reader ejects it automatically after 10s

Just weird...

Any idea?

[expert] Stupid password loss

2003-04-05 Thread Molotov

Hello

Well, I need some advice for a classic problem... I am now unable to get
access to one of my computers, as I forgot my password (root account).
I still have a basic user password, but - no luck - it has expired.

In fact, I am trapped out of my box ;-)

I have some data I need to get back, and I must find a way.
Of course, I have physical access.
Getting the hard disk to another machine in order to recover data before
a reinstallation is an option, but for different reasons I prefer to
avoid it (SCSI disk on the locked box, no SCSI support in the one I use
now, which is quite full in terms of alim usage).

Is there a way to get back my password ? I mean, maybe some brute force
utility ? I think I can get the password file with a floppy (after
booting on CD).

The locked box is Mdk 9, with I think the most paranoid security level.

Any advice for the stupidest man on Earth ?

TIA and regards,

FT

you might want to boot from the installation CD in rescue mode, chroot to the
you root partition and set a new password with passwd.

I had the same issue on my GigaByte GA-7VAX1394, until I passed acpi=off to
the kernel at boot (put it in lilo.conf and lilo -t, lilo -v)

Now ACPI did work on the board except for that, but I found a message in

found, and could I mail the maintainer, so I´m guessing that this board is

[expert] Create own RPM repository to use with Mdk-Software installer ? How ?

2003-04-05 Thread Joerg Mertin
Hi Folks,

as I'm a kind of an Old Unix guy, and having lots of Mirror Sites I'm
getting RPMS, Sources etc. from onto my server-harddrives, I wanted to
add the RPM's at least into the Software Repository to use with the
Mdk-Software Installer.

I do see in the normal directories, that the base directory holds the
old well known hdlist.cz etc. files. Trying to create these using the
genhdlist program generates me some files, but these are not accepted by
the Software Source manager of the direct command line using the urpmi
programm. The Error message is:

Unable to update medium; It will be automatically disabled.

I was up to now unable to find detailed documentation on how to really
use it genhdlist, or to create a valid RPM Repository.

So - here comes my request. Anyone has a Howto hanging around or a Link
to decent Documentation ?

If using genhdlist is the wrong way of doing it. Anyone has a Pointer
into the right direction ? I seeked the Internet foir several hours for
the correct hints, but so far without success...

Thx for your help :)

Cheers

[expert] SUdden Crashed with Mdk-9.1 (X-Windows running Amok).

2003-04-05 Thread Joerg Mertin
Hi Folks,

I had several crashes using Mdk-9.1 under X-Windows.
Having reacted fast enough once - I saw the X-Server was running Amok,
e.g. using loads of Memory. Usually - the X-Server uses 180MBytes of
Virtual memory, and 55Mbytes of Resident RAM.
This Time, just before the System was completely unreactive - I had
401MBytes of Resident Ram, and 1.1GBytes of Virtual Memory - which is
quite unusual. Ok - 10secs later I had no chance in doing a thing ;)

I never had this beheaviour under Mdk-9.0, even with all my un-Mdk
packages installed and self-patched stuff.
Under X I do use the Cursor extension, using Silver as default
Mouse-Pinters etc. Default resolution I use is the 1280x1024x32bpp
(60Hz, as a TFT connected using the Digital Link).

Here my Hardware:
- Asus A7N8X Delux (Using the 3com Network Port, and Onboard Sound +
  USB, Firewire drivers loaded though)
- 2x256MBytes Ram
- 1x30GB+1x40GByte E-IDE Harddrives, running in UDMA-2 mode (Don't know
if enable idebus=66 is safe. Havn tried it yet).
- 1 Geforce 3 Ti500 (Hercules) with 64MBytes Ram - using the DVI Port.
- 1 Eizo L465TFT Black screen (*A beauty :)*)
The Used Software:
- Mdk-9.1
- NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123, NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123 self compiled
kernel-module (The never drivers have the so=caled Black-Display
Syndrom, sent a Mail to NVIdia with a detailed Bug-Report though - the
System does not Hardlock, it takes only 30Minutes to passes a certain
probing stage in the X-Drivers extension while locking all
  interrupts).
- Kernels used (This time not self-compiled)
  kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk and
  kernel-multimedia-2.4.21.0.16mdk-1-1mdk
- The Rest is a Fresh install, having had some Plf/Texstar packages for
  Xine/mplayer & Multimedia stuff.
PS: Has anyone gotten the Rear Sattellites, LFE/Center speakers to
activate using the alsa-Drivers ? They seem to recognise everything -
but I am unable so far to activate these :)

Thx for any hints & to take this as a Bug report :)

Cheers

Re: [expert] USB problems

2003-04-05 Thread Joerg Mertin
Hi Mate,

I bet you got the exact same Problem I had using the Mdk-2.4.21 kernels.
Add:
acpi=off

To you LILO Append line. The Problem is that the kernel is now able to
actually use Interrupt vectors. One my Motherboard however - (Asus A7N8X
Delux), these did fail. Everything having had an Interrupt higher than
15 was subject to not beeing able to reserve the Slot - thus timed out.

With this LIne in LILO append of the appropriate kernel - it should work
again.

I've got a Logittech USB mouse and a Epson C62 USB printer. Both were found

I've got a Soyo Dragon plus MB with 4 ports enabled. Every so often, the mouse
dies (no power). I can unplug it, plug it into another USB port (not with the
same group though) and it is instantly back on. Unplugging it from the
original port it was in and plugging it right back in has no effect. Time
varies that it takes for this to happen. When this happens, the printer also
will not print (USB bus busy, will retry in 30 seconds) but it never does
print.

Anyone have any ideas? The mouse works fine on the other 2 comps I have here

service usb restart

and

service cups restart

but they had no effect.

It is fairly easy. I usually go in the directory and make a "genhdlist ." then
I can add it with usual "urpmi.addmedia name file://path/to/repository with
hdlist.cz"

If you was in /path/to/ and made a 'genhdlist repository' you have to
'urpmi.addmedia name file://path/to/repository with ../hdlist.cz

At least this is how I understood it and it worked here several times.

Hi, Mark. It sounds to me a bit like the problem I had when trying to set up
printing from a win98 pc to the usb printer on this box. It turned out to be
a driver problem. I'm not on 9.1 yet, so I can only suggest the lines of
investigation I would take on 9.0, and you can adapt them as necessary. I'm
not sure whether you said you had done either of these.

1) HP are pretty good at providing drivers. There may be a specific one on
their website. But before trying that, look at MCC.

2) Try setting up a new printer (it will work alongside the other one, even
if they point to the same printer - I have 4 set up, to give me quick access
to different settings). Under Hardware > Printers, first select expert mode
(or is it advanced?), then go through the screens to add a printer. When you
get to the screen asking you to confirm the model, there should be a
selection of drivers available for your model. Make sure that you have
selected the recommended one. If it is no better you can use the same setup
facility to try the other drivers.

I'm clean out of ideas, then, Mark. I take it that this is a local printer?
The similar problem I had was when I was trying to print from windows using
the local cups driver, and that was cured by installing local drivers, but
that's no help at all if it's local :( Sorry

Yep. The problem isnt that it shows up as 1 cpu using top but that it is
causing one cpu to be disabled and showing as a failure during bootup or
I should say during the POST pahse of the bootup.

 Hi, Damien.

I guess I'm not understanding this well. As a storage device it is seen as
sdb1. As a pc camera, the hardware list just gives

Vendor: Unknown

Bus: USB

Location on the bus: 0:11b

Description: USB PC Camera

Module: unknown

Media class:

The hard link was not allowed, and the symbolic link didn't work, so I must be
going about this the wrong way. All ideas gratefully received. :-)

Actually mplayer is not even running. The problem is that I insert the
disc in the DVD drive, it churns out for a few seconds then spit it
out...

you might chectk to see what the complete /dev device is for the /sdb? what
exactly was the error message? maybe the link format is backwards, or you
need to link to something like /dev/video/video0... sorry I cann't check

Can you test the drive under another OS or in another system? I've had
this happen, and seen it happen cdroms before. I became quite bad, to
the point where, if the computer was on, the cdrom would eject. Kind of
annoying seeing as it made the drive completely unusable.

Does it do this for all movies?

Ok in W2K.

In fact it does eject only encoded DVDs (Region 1 & 2). I was able to
play a non-encoded documentary DVD.
Weird 'cos a few days ago I was able to watch encoded DVDs as well using
mplayer.

I must have installed something that is causing that... but what since I
installed LM9.1 I have been wildly installing stuff from contrib, club

Open a console, type 'su', enter root password, type 'xcdroast'.
Configure xcdroast, and allow your user account to use xcdroast. After
this no more requirement for root to run xcdroast.

It is a misnomer that one must log into the gui as root (which is very
dangerous) in order to run gui apps with root access. In order to run
xcdroast as root, simply open a terminal, type su, enter the root password
and then enter xcdroot. The program is now running with all root
proviledges. This can be done for anty app. BTW, this method is also far
faster than logging out, logging in as root, logging out and logging in as
user again.

[expert] gpm + mc bug persists in 9.1

2003-04-05 Thread mikalzet

All right, I know I can't complain because I don't pay Mandrake; but I
would have thought that known bugs might have been ironed out for a new
distribution regardless.

Just for the records: in mandrake 9.1 use of gpm (mouse control) in text
consoles as ordinary user (but not as root) is buggy: does not work with
midnight commander. If the ordinary user is the first to log in you get
the same old debug messages spewing out on screen, if someone else has
logged in on a different text console before you don't get debug messages
but it just doesn't work. Root user can use gpm with mc ok.

My guess is it has to do with devfs.
Seems I'm one of the very few to prefer using text consoles and mc when
fooling about with files insted of the glamorous graphical interface -
which I love for other things.

I have tried setting an alias
mc = mc -d
so as to invoke mc without mouse support, but this gives me an error every
time I open a console in graphical environment and invoke mc.

The solution would be a script:

check if you are in text console or graphical console;
if in text console call mc as mc -d

how would I do the first check with bash ?

Hello all

I have a laptop with Mandrake 9.0. Everything works fine except when
pressing the Fn key (which I need to redirect the video to an
external monitor/projector).The system Freezes (the keys ctrl+alt+f1, nor
the ctrl+alt+del
don't work so I have to turn the laptop off and on again).

Before 9.0 I had 8.2 and the (fn+F7 redirect) worked just fine.

I cheked some archives and have not seen this problem nor the solution
reported.

Any pointers as to how to solve the problem?

Ok, Been there done this... fixed it.

1. boot from the rescue disk (disk 1 on your distro) chose f1 at the
prompt
2. at the new prompt type rescue (as the instructions will tell you.)
3. When the new window comes up (btw it will look like it's going to
start an install don't worry it won't) select with the arrow keys mount
installed system.
4. After it mounts chose go to prompt.
5 cd /mnt/etc this is your hdd.
6. use the command vipw (stands for vipw) in this manor.

$ chroot /mnt vipw

the above will chroot jail you to your hdd and edit the real password
file.

7. Find the line (should be the first one) That looks like

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

Change it to look like

root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash#Notice I just removed the x.

Then wq this file so it's saved. Immediately a prompt asking if you
want to edit shadow password will come up, say yes. The line for root
will look something like this.

root:$1$NpWEeIT/$bcb/UR/rGIlDcFdn7C.7b.:12140:0:9:7:::

change it to look like this.

root::12140:0:9:7:::

wq to write and save this file. then exit from the rescue disk...
reboot and you will now have a root user with a blank password.
WARNING. Give root a password immediately *grin* upon logging in.

How did I learn this... Trial and error and a firewall I hadn't logged
into in 14 months. "oops"

[expert] Laptop external video freezes the X Windows system

2003-04-05 Thread pedro gomez
I have a laptop with Mandrake 9.0. Everything works fine except when
pressing the Fn key (which I need to redirect the video to an external
monitor/projector).The system Freezes (the keys ctrl+alt+f1 don't work so I
have to turn the laptop off and on again).

Before 9.0 I had 8.2 and the (fn+F7 redirect) worked just fine.

Any pointers as to how to solve the problem?

Joerg,

Over on the cooker list. Thomas has stated and given links to a bunch
of kernel patches Some of them specifically aimed at your mobo. (the
thread title is: NEW INSTALL IMAGES FOR MDK 9.1 ) He said he should
have a new kernel on the cooker by Sunday to address this and a number
of other HW issues. If you can't wait he provided links to the
patches. If you can. He should have the kernel out soon and I'm sure he
would appreciate constructive feedback. (btw the thread title is in all
caps that's not my editing.)

Richard,
Go to a console, and su to root, and type xcdroast, and enter. Xcdroast will
start, then there's a box where you can add users, and select to allow user
permissions.

If the above doesn't work (it frequently does try it first)... there is
a switch in the kernel called.

Use Real Mode APM BIOS call to power off

(under General last item or close to the last.) This is for really
buggy BIOS's (and boy howdy some of them are buggy) and will enable them
to power off correctly. MDK can't enable this by default because if the
BIOS does this correctly then this switch will cause them to not be able
to power off. I've an e-machines box I built up for a friend I had to
do this on.

Another way... at the command line run drakedm and then choose one of
the other dm's (GDM KDM or TWM) they will allow a root login. Note it
may ask for your disk as the default install only gives you mdkkdm

IMHO no more dangerous than an su. Basically if you don't know what
you are doing everything is dangerous. Dangerous is your 16 year old
asking for the car keys. Dangerous is a religious fanatic with a plan.
Dangerous is a platoon of enemy soldiers and you only have one clip
left. Running as root is reason for caution. Not life threatening.

I'm not sure what is fixed with VIAO boxes but the list of things Thomas
has in the new kernel (due out Sunday hopefully) includes some VIAO
stuff. This may help.

looks like it's running depmod -a every boot now -- I've seen this too.
Is this necessary? It takes about 30 seconds or more!

Glad I saw this before trying to upgrade either of my servers -- they
both have Voodoo3 AGP cards in them. Have you tried using 3.3.6? It was
always pretty solid with the Voodoo.
Thank you for the tip! I tried 3.3.6 but, since 4.3 worked, I chose the
latest. Anyway, has 3.3.6 3d support? if not, where's the advantage?

X stuff being slow could be an xserver problem, but this sounds like
something different... I don't know what though.
/etc/sysconfig/harddisks? Was the system responsive before?
The system has always been responsive ... as responsive as a cel400 with a
very poor chipset can be. This time, with 9.1, it's MUCH worse.
The problem should not be related to the harddisk: the ibm hd is now pio (I
will change it to dma soon), but the disk works only for few seconds, while
apps take many many seconds to start, after the hd has stopped working. I
forgot to tell that I set the hd in quietest mode, but this affects only
seek time (so it could probably slows down the depmod process), while, as
already said, apps take much to start even after the hd has finished.

> A question: why did you choose a -pre kernel? was it really necessary?
>
I'll hazard a guess that it's ACPI -- those of us with new laptops and
desktops don't get working systems without good ACPI support, and 2.4.21
is definitely a lot better.
What about preemptive patch? is it already inside?

When I said Bill Gates I was'nt joking,

if it would recognise my scanner No it did'nt its still a yuk thing

So I had to reload the adaptec s/w for the cd burner, which according to

How can anyone pay so much for a pile of poo and a picture of a green

Exactly what I wanted to do. Here's what I did (after Marc's reply):

(1) Disabled KDE's automatic device display:
Go to KDE Config -> LookNFeel -> Behavior
In Devices section at the bottom, uncheck "Display
 devices on the desktop."

(2) Go to the desktop, right click, select Create New ->
Link to application (URL). Type in the name you want
and the mount point (E.g., /mnt/cdrom). [This assumes
you are doing this for supermounted devices--if not use
 Create New -> xxx Device.]

(3) Right click on the new desktop device icon, select properties, and
 pick the appropriate icon.

(4) Repeat for other desired devices.

I could not find a script that KDE is using. Must be in a binary. So, I
don't see any way to currently control how KDE displays mounted or
unmounted devices automatically. So it's a nice idea, but not quite
fully usable.

Norm

Open two terminal windows,
in one type "top". On the other send some file to printer with "lpr
somefile.ps"
In the windows with "top", you should see a pbmtozjs or a foo2zjs procces
running for a while. is it?

from memory, go to create cd : write cd : master tracks. select the ISO
(it must be in the directory you've configured as xcdroast's swap space)
and click OK, then it'll ask if you want to proceed.

Re: [expert] Create own RPM repository to use with Mdk-Software installer ? How ?

Use urpmi.addmedia without generating a list. It will autogenerate one

Hi Folks,

as I'm a kind of an Old Unix guy, and having lots of Mirror Sites I'm
getting RPMS, Sources etc. from onto my server-harddrives, I wanted to
add the RPM's at least into the Software Repository to use with the
Mdk-Software Installer.

So - here comes my request. Anyone has a Howto hanging around or a Link
to decent Documentation ?
If using genhdlist is the wrong way of doing it. Anyone has a Pointer
into the right direction ? I seeked the Internet foir several hours for
the correct hints, but so far without success...
No hdlist is the right way

Thx for your help :)

Hope it helps ;)

Q:
17. Uh...I feel stupid but how to write downloaded ISO-images?
A:
If you downloaded an ISO-image (e.g. a linux distribution) you have
to copy that big file (extension should be .iso) first to an
image-directory of X-CD-Roast. You specify these directories in Setup
at the "HD Settings" tab. These are the places where X-CD-Roast will
look for audio (.wav) or data tracks.
Now you enter the "Create CD" menu and you will see your image-file
displayed nicely in the "Image-Information" window. Go to
"Write Tracks" -> click on "Layout tracks" tab, add your image-file,
click on "Accept track layout" and finally a click at "Write tracks"
will write that image perfectly to your CD-R/RW.

2003-04-05 Thread Miark
Ah, you don't need to use a gui. Find out what device your burner is with
"cdrecord -scanbus" and then use the following command:

  cdrecord -dao -v dev=DEV speed=8 driveropts=burnfree file.iso

where DEV is the bus location of your burner that you determined with
scanbus, such as 0,1,0 or whatever. If your drive doesn't have
bufeer-underrun protection, leave out the driveropts portion. Also, feel
free to change the speed.

Very close. Go to create cd, then write tracks, then layout tracks, select
the iso image from the directory (must be in the directory you entered in
setup / hd settings), click add, then accept track layout then write tracks,
do not pad tracks, use disk at once dao mode and write tracks. You can
verify the cd burn by doing a md5sum /dev/(which device your burner is on,
eg. scd). It should return the same md5sum as the original iso image. If
you pad the tracks or don't use dao then the md5sums won't verify the burn.

You might try running "modprobe v4l" with the cam attached; if you're
running devfs, this should (IIUIC) create the /dev/videoX node(s).

Two ways that occur to me:

1) Test on the current value of $TERM.
2) Test whether or not $DISPLAY is set.

Want it to be even more frustrating. Do a locate CD | grep desktop...
you'll find about 4 or 5 of them on your box... and not a one of them
does anything grrr.

[expert] 9.1 Mozilla 1.3 doesn't start up.

2003-04-05 Thread Steven Cole
Greetings all,

I cannot get Mozilla to start up, either from the menu, from the
taskbar, which does "soundwrapper /usr/bin/mozilla %u", or from
a shell, either "/usr/bin/mozilla" or the above.

When launched from the menu or taskbar, the hourglass tumbles for
about 30 seconds and then disappears with no mozilla started.

When the /usr/bin/mozilla script is run, no processes are started
either.

The .mozilla directory is empty.

Other large apps such as OpenOffice or Koffice start OK.
Evolution too. Galeon segfaults but that's another problem.

The box has 384 MB memory and free showed about a 1/3 of that
available when I first started trying to start Mozilla. Swap is
on, but not yet used.

Thanks in advance for any help as to how to troubleshoot.

Steven

This may work in many caseses... HOWEVER I've had it happen a couple of
times that the file passwd was corrupted or otherwise compromised. (I
found one box that was root kitted if you changed the root password
it would send it off to the owner of the kit... ugh.)I prefer to
take it off line. make it a no passwd root and find out if my box is
clean. Paranoid yes... but.. I'm that way *grin*.

Couldn't agree more... the only diff is I use.

cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=DEV -data file.iso

On mine not using the burnfree opt creates fewer coasters. and the -dao
is the default so I don't bother.

PS (I've yet to be able to get a gui either in Windows or Linux to burn

Norm,

You've got me started now *grin* I created a new user on my box.
I see what you see. One thing though do an ls -a ... yep hidden files.
If you move Desktop to desktop ... all icons immediately disappear.
What I haven't been able to get working is what inside makes it happen.
If you move all of the .files to something else (after making the
directory read only . they get auto recreated. Those 2 icons are
still there. So removing the directory gives you an icon free zone but
none of the files in it create the icons. So something is looking for
the existence of the directory and then creating the icons. I've even
created an empty Desktop directory ... and I get 2 icons yep floppy and
cdrom g... still looking.
