LOL, Utah isn't really on my list of places to live either! Well, there are
other professions where you work with animals that isn't as sad as the vet
offices are, and there are lots of other shelters besides Best Friends (the
ASPCA in NY is always hiring it seems), but you're right, so long as you are
working with animals, there's always some potential for heartbreak involved.

Maybe you could get a job that involves more working outside, and not being
locked in a building with all those "high-and-mightiers".

You know what? I don't think I could handle working in a vet's office. I
was crying earlier over Hideyo's cats, and I don't even know Hideyo. My
coworker asked what I was crying about and I said sick cats..no, they aren't
my sick cats..and yes, I don't even know Hideyo..so yeah, I am crying about
someone's sick cats on the Internet. You think they think I was strange
before. Anyway I just picture vet's offices as kinda being surrounded by
grief, and I know I couldn't cope with it. I can barely read this list and
can't read the heart kitty list at all, so being around it all the time
would probably kill me.

I would love to work for Best Friends, but not if I have to live in Kaneb
Utah. Heh.

2006-11-15 Thread Lee Evans

Try an overnight soak in
Petzyme (purchased at PetsMart) or some other enzyme product that you can use to
soak your clothes.  The mistake most people make with enzyme odor removal
products is not keeping them wet long enough for the bacteria to work on the
source of the odor.  It would also help if you had a place to store your
clothes so your kitty couldn't access them.  I'm sure you hang them in a
closet but try to place underwear and other items you store in dressers one
drawer down from top and one drawer up from bottom.  That should leave you
with two drawers.  You might also try adding plastic storage boxes to your
drawers.  I have several spraying kitties who spray my dresser and the
urine seeps into the drawers.  I solved the problem the above
way.

Dr. Bronner's Lavender
soap is excellent as a laundry soap, floor wash, counter wash, body wash, almost
everything wash.  It's natural, no cancer-causing chemicals or chemical
fumes pretending to be Lavender or Rose.  A bit more expensive then Tide
but worth it for keeping chemical's out of your cat's environment.

Kelly,      Sounds like someone is just trying to make your life a living hell.  Some people just hate animals and think those of us who go out of our way to help them are nuts, and they are going to proove it to us by embarrasing us every chance they get.     There are bullies in the office place too!     If you have a humane resource manager, just explain what is going on, the steps you've undertaken to protect your co-workers from undesired odors, and ask for help.  If someone is having a problem with your "smell" they need to be allowed to move to another part of the office.  If you are taking all necessary precautions, and this "someone" is still complaining, perhaps this someone is having auditory hallucinations and needs to seek counseling.  (It happens.)     If you want to be a smarta** buy a jar of Vicks vapor rub and give it to your
HR person to give to the one who is doing all the complaining.  They use it in mortuaries to help cover the odor of rotting corpesjust have the complainer dab a small bit under each nostril...surely that would work for your highly sensitivepain in the patutie coworker.       If there is nothing in your office's Conduct Code mentioning odors, your coworker has no leg to stand on.  If there ARE rules in your office's Conduct Code, once you follow them, you are under no committment to do more than what is specified in the rules.  If your coworker still has a problem, it is up to the boss or the H.R. admin to address it with THEM...and is no longer your responsibility.     (I rescued a stray dog one day on my way to school fed her and took her to class -art college-dogs were allowed in the studios- she was very quite and stayed still (mostly slept)the whole 6
hours, but one little so and so kept complaining about her being there.  He finally raised a ruckus about how badly she stank!  Almost in tears, I was starting to lead her out -I was going to leave class early to take her to the pound- when a fellow classmate spoke up and enlighted the annoyed party to the fact that he was painting a watercolor on watercolor paper...MOST of which are treated with rabbit skin glue...and yes, IT stinks when wet.  The stink was ACTUALLY  coming from HIM.  The rest of the class chimed in and the little twitt finally shut up about it.)     Ask your boss or HR rep. if the offensive odor your coworker is smelling might actually be coming from his/her own space...perhaps rancid food forgotten in the desk?     In any rate, thank the twitt for his or her imput and suggest that he/she find a way to deal with it.     Good luck,

RE: OT Help, I am so embarrassed

2006-11-13 Thread Linda Johnson
Hi - I've been quietly lurking and following this
topic because I've had my cats pee on my clothes in
the past and wanted to see what advice was given.

I want to share a recent discovery I've made that
makes my clothes smell great!

I've started using the new Tide Simple Pleasures
laundry soap combined with the same fragranced Downy
Simple Pleasures fabric softener and my clothes smell
lightly scented with a nice, soft floral fragrance all
day! The scent is strong enough to cover up any
vinegar smell that may be in the clothes. I
personally love the Rose & Violet scent - very nice!

I've tried a lot of laundry soap because I have an
incontinent cat and I find that Tide has the strongest
and most long lasting scent - more expensive, but
worth it!

Just my 2 cents!

Linda

See -- maybe she's reacting to the vinegar, if she just
"thinks" it's the litterbox.  Check the sequence of events:  You're
told last week that you smell like cat pee.  You launder your clothes in
vinegar, detergent and oxyclean, which leaves a faint essence of vinegar.
This person TODAY -- not the same one as before? -- says you smell "funny" --
not specifically like cat pee, just "funny" -- and assumes, since it isn't a
soap smell or cologne smell or other smell you'd expect a person to have, and
knowing you have cats, that it's the litterbox.  Now granted,
it's not the best thing in the world to go around smelling like a salad either,
but I really do think she's projecting what she thinks she knows onto what's
reality.  Maybe after you wash your stuff you should Febreze it so it
smells "correct."   ;-)

If I smell *anything* it is a hint of white vinegar.  I asked my

same complaint?  Did he/she PERSONALLY say you smelled, or was it a
"people are saying" kind of thing?  Did they say you specifically smell
today, or could it be a carryover from last week somehow?  I know you've
already wracked your brain about this, but is there anything you were
wearing/carrying that might have gotten spritzed without you noticing, either
now or previously?  Could the combined essences of vinegar, detergent and
oxyclean possibly be taken as ammonia-like when warmed with body heat?
Because I'm thinking, if people know you have cats and smell ANYTHING that's

I'd hate to think somebody was out to get you, but it would be good to have
some sort of documentation on your end.  Is there somebody, a friend you
can trust to be brutally honest, you can have smell your clothing (somewhere

  If there
*is* a litterbox smell on your clothes, I'm not sure how much extra advantage

I don't know, I am going to run a black light over them when I get home.  Which I should have done already, but I was in a hurry this morning, the giardia has cropped up again and I had some "stuff" to clean up.

Really, I can't possibly smell like cat pee after all that, even assuming the cats actually peed on the dress before I washed it, can I?    I could take it to the dry cleaners?

Well, someone just called me in to the conference room and said I smelled like a litter box.  I pulled this dress out of the washer this morning.  It was washed in 1 cup white vinegar plus detergent plus oxyclean.  There is no way it was peed on unless the cats got in the washer and peed on it.  I don't know what to do.

I'm working on it.  She is such a sweet little cat, and was such a hard luck kitty when she showed up on my porch skinny as a rail, immensely pregnant, and MAYBE 10 months old at best.  I have never seen a cat with no comprehension of a litter box.  I don't understand.  So, yeah, trainingthis isn't retaliatory pooping or uncontrollable squirtsshe just seems not to understand.  She is such a nice cat that I think, once I get it across to her that I would really appreciate it if she would poop in the box, I'm sure she will go along with it for my sake.  She's such a nice little girl.     What is even more puzzling is that Sylvia, possibly Hannah's sister or cousin -- another bowlegged, sway-backed, tabby/white, under-a-year, hugely pregnant and very hungry girl from the same location has no litterbox issues.  But Hannah does.  This is a first for me.  We just keep picking up the poop and
shaking our heads.  Normally there is a behavioral or physical explanation but here it seems that she just doesn't understand."Rosenfeldt, Diane" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Oh dear.  Have you physically put her in the box and "helped" her scratch the litter with her paw, like they tell you to do with kittens?  I guess it doesn't always come naturally.     Our sweet Doyle, no other health issues, is a big fraidy cat.  He's low on the pecking order,

2006-11-10 Thread Susan Hoffman
People tell me that my house has NO cat odor.  I am always surprised and relieved.  My house can't stink because I do adoptions (of carefully pre-screened potential adopters) at my home.  My house is cleaner now than when I had just my own 4 personal cats when I first moved here.  As best that I can determine, here's what works:     1.  We scoop litterboxes twice a day and ALWAYS before someone comes to visit, and we use scoopable litter. 2.  I have Chlorox bleach sheets in every room so that I can get them quick for cleanups. 3.  When I scrub floors I use A-33 which deodorizes and disinfects. 4.  I am not above spritzing citrus air freshners around before I answer the door. 5.  My vaccuum is one of those wet/dry shop vacs with a 5 hp  motor -- the kind generally associated with construction sites.  That baby could suck up the entire
contents of a litterbox without even burping.  (It has eaten a few of the cats' toys but no kittens have turned up missing.) 6.  I do A LOT of laundry, and will add bleach to almost any load.     This is all with wall to wall carpeting.  We are right now in the process of replacing the carpeting with wood laminate.  I  can hardly wait.  Right now I spend way too much time cleaning.  The laminate will be so much easier.    Evan & Dee <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I like that idea !!Nina wrote: I know it's not funny, but I'm laughing at the thought that we've found one more thing we all share in common:WE

Wish Leader would find the bathtub!!   I am so lucky to have him alive that I just can't get mad at him -- but it is frustrating when there are litterboxes in every room and he doesn't use them -- except rarely!    His latest spot was a corner of a tile bathroom -- not a bad spot...except that I went in there the other day and there was wet all over the floor -- I thought somebody'd fallen in the toilet and dripped water all over, but no, following Leader's poop example, the whole household decided to pee in there.  You would think pee on tile would be easy to get clean but I swear I can't get the smell out!TenHouseCats <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:ah, yes, the infamous squirts... the one i have doing that now, tho, has the incredible kindness to do so in the bathtub, so it's easy to clean up

Nina, you are cracking me up :0)  I am just sitting here thinking
about what would happen if I asked my small band of co-workers if I smelled like
cat pee.  My name would officially become "CAT PEE WOMAN"they would
change my name plate on my door LOL  I would hear cat pee jokes for the
next 3 months...whether I had a trace of cat pee or not ;-)   You
can't have a thin skin where I work.  One of us had to get his two front
teeth pulledthe rest of the gang all wore halloween teeth the next day in
his honor ;-)  Still...I don't know if they would honestly let me know or
not.  I know I showed up one day in an elegant cat pee duster..I had to lay
low that day...

Why
do I suddenly feel EXHAUSTED?    ;-)

The trouble is, once people know you have cats, any little
accidental infraction will brand you the smelly cat lady.  This goes to
what Beth said about the power of suggestion.  There was a woman who rode
my bus (45 minute each way commute) who told me in an email that my backpack
reeked of cat pee.  I didn't smell it at ALL, and I really got my face down
in there, but I threw it in the washer anyway.  Thing is, this woman hated
me as a matter of course, and knew that I had more cats than *she* thought
appropriate.  So I can't be sure if there was something she
really smelled that I didn't, if she was making it up, or if maybe *once* I
wore something that had a smell and she made one of her usual sweeping
generalizations.

A
digression:  This woman, Lisa, irrationally disliked me because she
was a big loud know-it-all, and felt threatened because I know as much or more
than she did about some things!  Not even about all things, just some
things.  She kept accusing me of getting our "perfect" regular driver
in trouble -- which I didn't even do.   Once, he left early
and missed 2 of us on the route, and the other missed lady apparently called to
complain and he had to come all the way back.  Lisa accused me of the
complaint call and when I told her it wasn't me and must have been the
other lady, she replied "Well, you may not have, but if she hadn't, you would
have!" Huh?  End of digression. ;-)

Yep, I've been there. The key is to
add a FULL CUP of white vinegar to every wash load in addition to anything
else you use to clean it (the detergent, bleach, oxyclean, etc). And clean the
house with vinegar too, it neutralizes the cat urine smell (and ammonia). On
the upholstery (like the sofa) use the Resolve Carpet Foam or the Armor-All
Car Foam Upholstery cleaner, spay it on thick, then brush it in with a brush,
then scrub with a dry towel, flip towel, scrub more, keep using more towels
until it comes up wet but not colored on a white towel. You may have to spray
more foam, and use up to 3 towels on one sofa arm. On carpets, if you can find
the exact spot, if it's still wet, take a folded towel, and put it over the
spot, and step on the towel, flip to a dry side, and step down on it hard,
once it comes up dry, then pour white vinegar on the spot (use the same amount
as the cat would pee generally speaking), and then repeat your blotting
process with clean towels until THAT comes up dry. Let it dry, then use the
resolve carpet SPRAY on the spot, scrubbing with a towel to get it into the
carpet pad (it takes a LOT of spray). Then blot THAT til the towel comes up
dry. As for the bedroom, always tuck you bedspread, sheets, blankets, etc up
ON TOP of the mattress, never let them hang down over the sides of the bed,
that's PRIME spraying territory, and you'll definitely smell like cat pee if
you sleep under sprayed covers. Or shower in the morning AFTER you get all the
house chores done, and right before you head out the door. Keep one of those
odor absorber tubs in your closet, and always keep the door shut. If you ever
see a cat in it, be sure you get down on the floor and smell for new pee
puddles on the closet floor and spray on your longer clothing. If you have
forced central heat or AC, put the bounce dryer sheets with a touch of
febreeze in all your vents, that stuff is strong (don't do it in the
bedroom, you wont be able to sleep because of the perfume). Go through the
house and spray all curtains, shower curtains, beds, sofas, chairs, etc with
febreeze daily. Use the arm and hammer carpet powder if you have carpeted
floors with you vacuum. Once every month, wash ALL walls that are washable
(painted, paneling, or glossy paper can all be washed usually). Clean hard
floors in a 3 step process, first, use 1/2 a gallon of white vinegar mixed
with 1/2 a gallon of HOT water, mop all floors getting them soaking wet. Then,
make bleach water, 2 cups of bleach to 1 gallon of hot water,  mop floors
again, changing water as soon as you cannot see the bottom of the bucket.
Then, mop with a commercial floor cleaner, like Mr. Clean, the typical way. It
takes me ALL WEEKEND to clean, yes, but it does NOT smell like cat pee until
around Wednesday! (I also spend about $30 a week on laundry)

Oh, and always smell your clothes

My best bet is the urine is on/in your shoes.

I had mold in one of the homes I lived in and all of my clothes
smelled moldy and I had no clue until someone told me (every once in a
while I would smell something but wasn't sure what it was or where it
was coming from). Couldn't move right away so had to wash all my
clothes in perfume, this is where the dollar store and cheap perfume
came in handy. It sure smelled better than mold.

in the house because you get used to it if you smell it all the time,
but once you're outside I don't think you could miss it. I can smell
walking by bushes kitties use. Is your sense of smell good? Possibly
on your purse as mentioned.

Oh, it's absolutely logical.  We live with 5 cats, and
there's one litterbox that gets used more than others in the back hall.
When I get home I get whacked with pee smell because the landing it's on is at
nose level when you come in the door.  Makes me worry that the rest of the
place smells that bad and we just don't notice.  And the thing about
smokers is absolutely true.  They seldom know that they reek.

It's possible if body heat or a warm office is kicking in after you've
gotten dressed in the morning.  I try to keep my clothes in the
(barricaded) closet or in drawers.  If I leave something on a chair or on
the floor, I know I'm asking for trouble.  And I ALWAYS smell whatever I'm
about to put on.

My high point was when I put on my bra one morning and noticed that it felt
cold.  Then the realization slowly sank in.  It wasn't cold, it was
WET. Trixie peed on it.  I was wearing a bra with Trixie piss on
it!

Kelly,

I haven't used Oxyclean for urine removal, so I can't say one way or the
other, but my favorite cleaner which can be used on laundry too (as a
pre-treatment) is Simple Solution Cat Spray and Urine Remover.
Drs Foster & Smith have it on their website at:

How reassuring. You don't always smell of cat piss, only sometimes.  Bet that made you feel s much better, didn't it.  ;-)     Just don't leave clothes lying around, and don't let them in the closets.Kelley Saveika <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I guess it could be.  They say it isn't all the time, only sometimes.  I am concerned I can't smell it. It's possible if body heat or a warm office is kicking in after you've gotten dressed in the morning.  I try to keep my clothes in the (barricaded) closet or in drawers.  If I leave something on a chair or on the floor, I know I'm asking for trouble.  And I ALWAYS smell whatever I'm about to put on.     My high point was when I put on my bra one morning and noticed that it felt cold.  Then the realization slowly sank in.  It wasn't cold, it was WET. Trixie peed on it.  I was wearing a bra with Trixie piss on it!Kelley Saveika <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:My supervisor just called me in for a meeting and apparently people have been complaining that I smell like cat urine.     I do have some sprayers.  I wash my clothes with Oxyclean and I

sometimes we can get used to odors and not even notice them, so it's possible.

oxyclean is good stuff, but you HAVE TO USE ENZYME cleaners!

This stuff works amazingly well; it's my benchmark for all enzyme cleaners.  One of my vets used it to clean a suitcase that an INTACT MALE cat sprayed.  No odor left at all.

"LIQUI-ZYME 600 An enzyme producing bio-active culture which is excellent for maintenance of drains (digests greases, oils, even feminine napkins), elimination of urine odors in bathrooms, and diaper containers, elimination of pet odors in carpets, and even serves as an excellent laundry soak spot and stain remover. Also available in 12 x 1 quart bottles with two trigger sprayers per case. USDA L2 approved."

and my clinic also carries anti-icky poo, and I've heard nothing but good about it.
