[Fink-users] Update-all Abiword problems

2002-05-03 Thread Adrian Simmons

Can't do an automated update from CVS right now because the abiword
tarball appears to be non existent.

The following 7 packages will be installed or updated:
  abiword lame lame-shlibs libxml2 libxml2-bin libxml2-shlibs mad
The following 2 additional packages will be installed:
  mad-bin mad-shlibs
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
curl -f -L -s -S -P - -O
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/abiword/abiword-1.0.1.tar.gz
curl: (22) The requested file was not found
### curl failed, exit code 22
Downloading the file "abiword-1.0.1.tar.gz" failed.

I can work around that of course...but.

[Fink-users] NOTICE: Download problems from prdownloads.sourceforge.net

2002-05-03 Thread Peter O'Gorman

Hi all,
SourceForge.net has added some mirrors for
prdownloads.sourceforge.net, and changed the way files are
downloaded. At the moment this means that quite a few fink
packages will fail to download. This is an issue which we know
about and Max is working with the sourceforge team to resolve
it, it may take a day or two, please be patient.

If you find yourself unable to wait to install a package which
has a source URL at prdownloads.sourceforge.net, don't worry,
you can download the source code yourself.
All you have to do is cd into /sw/src and then issue the same
curl command you saw in the failed download phase, changing
prdownloads.sourceforge.net to
unc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/

You can then do fink install PACKAGE again and it should work.

Thanks for your patience and understanding,
Peter

For example, if I want to install abiword:

[localhost:~] peter% fink install abiword
sudo /sw/bin/fink install abiword
Information about 1019 packages read in 2 seconds.
pkg abiword version ###
pkg abiword version 1.0.1-1
The following package will be installed or updated:
  abiword

[Fink-users] broken sudoers

2002-05-03 Thread Dan O'Brien
Title: broken sudoers

I've gone and broken my sudoers file, and can't sudo now. I
opened it in BBedit to add the line:
  ALL = NOPASSWD: ALL
but it now comes up with the message  "sudo:
/etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440"
Any idea what to do?

Are you sure the problem is the dev tools? What are your errors? It's
much more likely to be a fink problem. For example xfree86 won't
download currently because prdownloads is hosed.

Very little changed in the gcc2 stuff. The main changes were to
project builder.

If you must remove it, there is a perl script to do so:

/Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl

Absolutely sure. Builds with Dec tools, not with April tools.

The problem occurs when building the app bundle for XDarwin. I don't know
if project builder is involved.

Log in as root and chmod it back.

bash$ su

bash# chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers
bash# exit
bash$

If you haven't activated your root account, you can do it via NetInfo or
a handful of other ways, see MacOSXHints.com for more info

The default seems to be '%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL'.

Any particular reason that you're putting in a specific entry for
your uid, and not just having your uid belong to the admin group?

[Fink-users] downloading applications

2002-05-03 Thread Dan O'Brien

I want to install Gimp and some other stuff, but my ISP cuts
me off every two hours, interrupting my downloads. I have speed
download, which allows me to resume browser downloads, so I was
wondering if I could download my files through download accelerator
via IE, and then put them sommewhere and tell fink to build them. I
tried putting the files from macgimp.org in sw/src and doing fink
configure to tell fink that was where they were, but it still went
to download them again - is that because they weren't the latest
versions? How can I get it to just install them?
Please bear in mind I'm a UNIX newbie - the above is just about my
entire knowledge of fink, unix and the command line!

yes, or if you like, install wget.

I like wget much better than curl, it works with less problems. there is
a -c option for it (curl has one too) which will continue the download
from where it left off...

I thought that curl supported resuming downloads.

-C/--continue-at
Continue/Resume a previous file transfer at the
given offset. The given offset is the exact number
of bytes that will be skipped counted from the
beginning of the source file before it is trans-
fered to the destination. If used with uploads,
the ftp server command SIZE will not be used by
curl. Upload resume is for FTP only. HTTP resume
is only possible with HTTP/1.1 or later servers.

Not sure how Fink negotiates this, though. BTW, although I have no
empirical evidence or reason to believe this, I would put my money on
curl or wget being more robust than any browser's file transfer
capabilities.

it does, but it has had a poor track record with me, it has trouble
downloading from many sites. I prefer wget...it is superior in my
opinion.
Fink, under normal circumstances, does not resume downloads.

[Fink-users] dependencies

2002-05-03 Thread Koen van der Drift

Hi,

Last night I did a fink update, and it installed a newer version of libxml2
(which is needed by daemonic which in turn is needed by anacron). Libxml2
is apparently expanding, because it now also depends on python, which in
turn depends on quite some other packages. This all seems overkill for me
just to run anacron. Is there a way to avoid this? Maybe daemonic can
depend on a stripped version of libxml2 (libxml1 or libxml2-nox or
something like that).

thanks,

- Koen.

There is also a "Fink-Beginner's List". You might find this helpful for
future problems.

The problem you are having is related to the server issues at
SourceForge and is hopefully a temporary problem. Check the last few
posts in the archive (see the last few lines of this email for more
info) to read more about it.

Dan,
Other people have responded with how to repair your system: su, chmod 0440 ...

But I wanted to mention visudo (/usr/sbin/visudo). It exists to catch
errors like yours before they end up breaking the system. It requires
learning a little bit of how to edit with vi, but I'd argue that
that's good knowledge to have if you're going to be mucking with
things as root.

Hope that helps (at least for the future)

[Fink-users] fink-selfupdate can't unpack tarball

2002-05-03 Thread tom keyes

Fink is going crazy on me. On fink-selfupdate I'm getting "unpacking the
tarball fink-09.11.tar.gz .failed" Fink update-all is giving many
warnings of "Possible unterminated here-document" The reason I started
updating is I replaced xtools with xfree86 and Grace gave the msg abt the
motif runtime library being 'older than build', so following the advice on
this list i was going to update everything and reinstall grace. Also there
have been other warnings about not being able to unpack tarballs. TIA for
any suggestionsTom

I recently had trouble getting the latest abiword tarball during a
fink install - very slow download, that kept failing, and I couldn't
goggle the file anywhere else. Fink wanted to overwrite the file and
start over every time, which meant I lost all the previous work. For
some reason, I decided to just have fink fetch the package (fink
fetch package_name), instead of doing the full install. This time,
fink offered the choice to resume the download - worked like a charm.
The download still eventually failed, but I was able to get a bit
more of it each time.

So, try fink fetch.

Good luck,

Kevin

[Fink-users] Nothing will install

2002-05-03 Thread macbishop

I have just made a fresh install of MacOS X 10.1.4 and the April
Dev Tools. Then i installed the latest fink-binary. When i run
'fink list' everything look OK but when I try to install it all
goes down the drain. This is what I get:

sudo /sw/bin/fink install xfree86-rootles

Failed: no package found for specification 'xfree86-rootles'!

Or when I try to install bash I get this:

The file 'dlcompat-20020413.tar.gz' can be downloaded with IE
without any problem. I have absolutely NO idea of what this
might be. Any suggestions? Am I missing something? I have used
fink before but not much.

[Fink-users] Make NetHack Use Graphics?

2002-05-03 Thread Grant Barrett

I see one indirect mention of this in the archives, but no response. I use
CVS and the unstable trees, so I stay a right on the bleeding edge. The last
time Nethack was updated, it stopped using the X graphical interface. Now,
far be it from me to upset decades of traditon for those who respect the
text-based interface, but I, err, prefer the X graphics.

My question: Is there some kind of switch or something I could use when
launching Nethack to make it use graphics? I checked the man pages and
read-me files and did a Google search but came up with nothing useful. Or
should I be compiling the app differently, rather than using the Fink
defaults?

Thanks, in any case.

Grant Barrett

This was mentioned earlier today on the list. prdownloads was (is?)
broken because of an upgrade the sourceforge folks were doing. They use
a javascript hack to determine what mirror to download from, which is
why it worked when you downloaded manually.

Is it me, or are *a lot* of people getting bugs like this lately? Problems
with tar, paroblems with gzip, null file sizes, unterminated here-docs...
maybe it's all isolated glitches but it looks like some kind of weird file
corruption that a lot of people are catching aspects of.

I'm sorry that I don't have any, but I've got a feeling that a lot of
people hare seeing different versions of the same problem that you are.
As far as I've noticed, no clear explanation or remedy has emerged yet,
but I would be very interested in finding out what's going on with your
system and others that are seeing what I suspect is the same thing.

In the meantime, can you re-install tar or fileutils? If that doesn't
help, would it help to reinstall fink itself? Have you done a recent CVS
update to make sure that your catalog is current & intact?

This script should fix the null file problems:

#!/bin/sh
rm /sw/bin/{tar,gzip,gunzip}
ln -s /usr/bin/gzip /sw/bin/gzip
ln -s /usr/bin/gunzip /sw/bin/gunzip
