This message is from: "Cheryl Gioia" Hi Valerie, Yes I did get Grabbson. He is having a blast here.or I hope so anyway. He is babysitting our youngsters and out in the pasture with the geldings. I didn't breed him when I got him. I just wanted to get to know him. He is such a gentle boy. I will be breeding him this year and I'd like to get him driving. I'd like to take him to Blue Earth NEXT year. Cheryl "The ride is the objective, the destination is the excuse!" Grabbson is 23 years young. He is far from old IMHO. We have the honor of standing another aged stallion here, Leidjo, from Anvil's Acres, age 25. I have not ever seen a healthier, more beautiful example of aged studs, and he is still producing wonderful foals for us and enjoying his harum here. Last year, Leidjo gave us 2 beautiful fillys, one grey. I expect another Leidjo foal around June 1, and this year I will be breeding him to several other nice mares. These aged stallions just keep on truckin I wouldnt worry much about his age, more about preserving these nice old bloodlines. Lisa ** It's Tax Time! If I recall, he is quite old? I have no money to purchase him, nor do I have the experience to handle a stallion, but, I sure hope someone in the fjord world will provide Grabbson with a place to live out his years. I have given several older horses (mares) retirement homes in the past years. The rewards are priceless. Last week I found my 25 year old QH mare dead in the pasture. She simply died...period. Up until that day she was eating and running and being the good ole' girl she always was. I miss her so much. I also know she knew she was loved - she waited for her muzzle smooch every morning before feeding. I hope I read very soon that someone is going to provide Grabbson a forever home. Grabbson
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi List ! After reading some of the comments about Grabbson going to auction I called my old friend from CA. Les Hoagland and asked him to write something to the list which we had already talked about. This is NOT a " rescue " Fjord. Far from it. From what I know.Les loves this horse and is only interested in getting him a great home. He has been to the Small Farmers Journal auction before and has seen good Fjords get good homes. With the bloodlines of Grabb, and the nice Fjords that Grabbson has produced, I cant understand why someone hasnt scooped him up. If I didnt have 4 intact males here right now, Jeff and I would have brought him here for breeding. Mike may have to correct me on this, but as far as I know, Grabbson is one of only 2 remaining son's of Grabb in N. America. ( Leik being the other ) Grabbson has thrown 50 NFHR registered offspring, many grey, so he carries a grey gene. He has thrown as many foals as his popular sire here. Les reports to me that he is NOT hard to handle, in fact is quite easy to be around. " Nils " ( Grabb X Siri ) who lived not too far from me was sent off to Mexico on a long ride to nowhere by someone who had bought him from a very uncaring owner. I missed being able to get him by one week. He had been abandoned in a large pasture for a couple of years and was injured.and running ( and breeding ) his own daughters, QH's ect.. After giving people many years of good, sound, nice Fjords to someone to make money on tourest rides, this was his fate. I do not expect that Grabbson will meet with the same fate. I have also seen Fjords go through the SFJ auction and they usually get a good price as well as new homes. Someone should give Les a call and make an offer IMHO ! Anywayhere is what I recieved last night from them. Lisa Hi Lisa Margaret & I have been working very hard in trying to get Grabbson into a good home. One that will keep his blood lines in the Registry. We have advertised him in many places and talked him up to many people. This last place we are trying is the Small Farmer Journal Auction and we choose that action because it has drawn more Fjord buyers in the past and does not draw the " Meat crowd ". Due to my health and other reasons we can no longer keep him here. After all, it was through an auction at Waverly that I was able to get Grabbson. After that auction I was contacted by so many people about how wonderful his foals were. So I'm hoping that someone else can take advantage of a good opportunity to have a GREAT STALLION at a reasonable price. So Lisa, I hope that you can help me get the word out that Grabbson is going to the Small Farmer Journal Auction on April 20. We hope that he finds the right home. This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Is it possible that the Norwegians might be interested in frozen semen from Grabbson? If the Norwegians are concerned about losing the draft heritage part of the breed, it might make sense to send it back this way. I have no idea how Grabbson would evaluate as a drafty Fjord, but it is a thought. Gail
RE: Grabbson
This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This sounds like something that would be appropriate for a foundation to handle. There would still be issues, of course, but it would make sense that a charitable foundation that is interested in breed improvement/etc could take tax deductible donations of semen. (This could be one of the better tax write-offs eversimilar to the now-banned practice of painters "painting tax deductions" that negated their entire income each yearmaking all of their income tax deductible. Come to think of it, from the stallion's point of view, this might be one of the BEST ways of generating tax deductions EVER!) :) Gail

Maybe this came up before, but not to my recollection. Mike, has that ever come up? Not that I am aware of. I don't see where the Registry would fit into this anyway. The semen wouldn't be the property of the Registry unless it was a donation or something. If it was a donation then whose decision would it be as to when to use it, how much to charge for it etc, etc... Mike GOOD POINT. I think other breeds have done this in the interest of breeding back to original lines if necessary, say for instance an immunity problem ever surfaced, in fact I read somewhere that often two different gene banks are used, just in case. I suppose it is the rough equivalency of horticulturists preserving ancient seeds. Thanks for your response. Ruthie, nw mt US

IMO, Grabbson is part of that legendary group of "the beginning" of the fjords in this country. Linda I am always keenly interested in Fjord foundation stock here in the US, it has long been a dream of mine that their bios could be compiled for posterity's sake. I recall this was one of the objectives the Breeder's Committee proposed. About 6 years ago on this list there were a rash of letters posted here that profiled a good many of the original stallions... I kept those in a hard copy file and took them out this morning, when I saw Grabbson's name, and read about his sire Grabb from an account of Doctor Brian Jacobsen's... it is priceless! He said some lovely things about about this noteworthy stallion! Many breeds deposit semen samples in a gene bank from their foundation stock and I'm wondering if this has been a consideration with the registry in the past? Maybe this came up before, but not to my recollection. Mike, has that ever come up? Ruthie, nw mt, US

I am sorry but I failed to mention that Grabbson's sire was Grab, who was known as the " Stallion of the Century " and both Grab & Grabbson were in the article about Stallions that have contributed to the Fjord Breed. Also Grabbson has produced 46 ++ progeny at least 6 were gray. This is just to add information about this great Stallion that is for sale. Les & Margaret Hoagland Callahan, California

Those of you who are new to the fjordlist may not be aware of the interesting story of Grabbson's sire.Grabb. There is a lengthy discussion in the archives. The history of Grabb is facinating and such an important part of the early importation of fjords to America .. IMO Grabbson deserves to live out his life in a caring and safe home. It is with pride I tell my friends and family how our fabulous fjord community is supporting Tim Hamlett and his fjord friends. It sounds like there will be quite a contingent of "fjord enthusiasts" at the Waverly sale - my daughter and I hope to attend but unfortunately, my husband is keeping the checkbook and my Visa card at home that day :(AW, he's no fun - haha!! Grabbson
This message is from: Cynthia Madden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have known Grabbson since before he was sold to Tim. He was sold by Harold Jacobson to Bill Steavenson who sold him to Tim just after I bought Tank from Steavenson. Bill loved this horse. I have a picture of him with his arm around Grabbson's neck taken five years before I bought Tank and the first time I got to meet Fjords after seeing my first one. Many of you know Tank, who has been a great Fjord ambassodor for Fjords since I bought him at age two from Steavenson. We just attended a Jeff Morse driving clinic (more later) and Jeff called him talented (any problems with him are mostly driver caused - no surprise there). Tank has great personality, smarts, and "talent." We have down two CDE's and will be doing more. He has been a healthy and happy horse in the nine years I have owned him. My grandaughters started riding him and driving him at age six and seven when they came to visit and at Blue Earth for several years. I am uploading a picture of Tank under his registered name of Hjerte Barn (means "apple of my eye") into the NFHR pedigree search if any are interested in a picture of one of Grabbson's get. Grabbson has been around since well before the evaluation system and the many new imported horses.I believe that until fairly recently he represented some of the best of the breed. Maybe at 18, his time has passed as an important stallion, there are now better ones. However, I think he deserves to be saved. I wish I could do it. = Cynthia Madden Las Cruces, NM [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo! Tax Center - forms, calculators, tips, more http://taxes.yahoo.com/

Re: Grabbson
This message is from: SUSAN GIARGIARI <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello List! Sue g. here. I have been following the conversations about the Waverly Auction and Tim's horses all going.just to let folks know..Dick and I met Tim and his wife the first year we went to the Libby, MT show...he is a very well meaning man! Friendly, loved his horses. Then I was reaquanted(sp?) with him about 3 years when I went to Norway. His wife had died, not sure when, and he was like a lost soul. He really had a hard time with most things...a few of us kept tabs on him to make sure he was ok. He really has a good heart and I know that if his comment was.I just want them gone...I would almost bet that he is in a depression... I have been there. When you are at the bottom, you just need things done and can't think about it in sane terms. I had a flock of 40 sheep, knew each and every one, had lambs every year from them, and the year that Dick had his first back surgery, we adopted Anthony, all the sheep were ready to lamb.and two litters of Great Pyrene! es were due a week apart..and we had two belgiums, a percheron and her filly, two paint fillysand I had to take care of all of it.needless to say, there came a time when I had to let something go,, I couldn't do it anymore...I sold the whole flock and when they were goneI knew that something was not right in my mind. They were a part of me, each and every one. But I couldn't care for them any more in the way that they needed so I let them go. To hear that Tim has said, He just wants them gonethat is what I said to. It doesn't make it right, it was what I had to do to survive mentally at the time.I just wanted to speak up in Tim's corner and if I had the money!! I would be at Waverly trying to get what I could to help make sure they got into good hands! A little while back , Sam, from Barefoot Farms had asked some questions on this fjord list about a foal that she had that she thought might be a grey. It is a colt, and it is out of Selma, who is a Grabbson daughter. Selma is a grey mare and we bred her to LLA Hilmar. She had a colt, Yngvar! We didn't get over to Sam's until about a month ago and as soon as I saw the colt right up close..I knew I was seeing my first Grey foal! I had never seen a grey that youngJulie Will had told me that when the foal is born, you will see a "Check" mark above each eye that is Blackand it will look like the foal has black eye make up on..the brown dunsof which we have seen plenty of! have a brown "check" mark.. The striping already apparent on this foal's legs is very striking..just like his dam, Selma's. Selma is an awesome mare. She belonged to Castlefjords until a few years ago and when Sam bought her... she was in foal. The stallion was a b! rown dun and Selma had a grey filly, Floyel. Then she was bred last year to a brown dun, Hilmar, and she has a grey colt. I think she also had a few other foals, greys. Dick loves this mare and we have her at the farm here in Northfield , MA as a little trade off! We have the pasture and fields for the foals to get great excercise and she gets to take my mares to use for her riding camps! On a sad note, Floyel was owned by a young girl named, Lia, who bought her from Sam. We took her to the NY Fjord show and Lia was going to enter Horse College in Morrisville, NY where the NFHR Evaluation was held last year. So Floyel stayed on to board at Julie's. Sam got a call last week from Lia and Floyel had to be put down. Please say some prayers for Daryll, Julie's husband at Old Hickory Farm as they have lost one older mare, a different young horse, and Floyel, and I am pretty sure that there was one other horse on the sick list. Floyel was thought to have died from colic...her colon was up over her back? not where it should have been. Lia is home now from college for a break and helping Sam at Barefoot.good for her to keep going and being with her friends! On a happier note, we went to our first Sleigh Rally in Granby, MA last weekend! Talk about cold,,it was only in the teenswe drove our box farm sled with Selma and Hilmar as a team. For practice we had Yngvar hitched to his mom's work harness,,, he was quite the little show off! When he was at Sam's still he would walk all over his mom and never got reprimanded by her..so he also thought it was ok to walk all over the people too! Sam and her husband, Rod, had a lot of fun bringing him in and out with mom from the paddock! When he got to our farm and was put out with his mom, Hilmar, and two other weanlings, Yasmine(Dena/Konggard) and Yuri(Stella/Hilmar).he didn't want to leave mom's side! He has learned all his manners now, amazing what a little time spent in the "herd

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Listers; With the news that Tim Hamlett is liquidating his herd I thought I would talk about my mare, Lena, who is out of Grabbson, Tim' s 18 year old stallion. >From past post's, you already know how much we love Lena ... she is the first mare I have ever owned, first mare in foal I have ever owned and gave us our first foal, Hasse. From the time we brought her home she has been easy to work with, I have never been afraid of her, her occassional "bossiness" is easily dealt with and she is smart!! She was a great mom - is a good pasture mate - loves attention and grooming. I feel she is a nice specimen of a fjordhorse - a nice mover - great temperment - good work ethic - and she is nice to look at. Lena is by no means "perfect" - but, she did not cost $12,000 either. She has not been evaluated - will be this fall. While I am interested in her evaluation score I did not buy her to reproduce - I bought her to ride/drive and enjoy for many years. Whether I rebreed her is unknown - at this point 5 horses is plenty for me!!! Some comment has been made about Grabbson not being trained. I have a quarterhorse that is out of a well known quarterhorse stallion from Wisconsin. My daughter and I visited the stallions home and discovered he is not trained - is never ridden - used for breeding only - but, he has thrown wonderful pleasure prospects in the past 20 years. If anyone is contemplating buying one of Tim's fjords and would like to see an offspring of Grabbson please come see my Lena - I would be happy to show her to you. Linda Lottie in Corcoran MN

There are some on the Fjord Mailing List site at http://members.home.net/smcilree There are some pictures of him at Blue Earth last year and on Saskia's page (also accessible from the site), there are some good pictures of him the previous year. BTW, just a reminder, that questions about the list, like the one about unsubscribing, are all answered under the FAQ section on the site. Meredith, You should also consult with your county extension agent regarding pasture and how or if to reseed it. They are going to be familiar with what grows best in your area, especially if you also have some advice from the list as to what is best for Fjord pasture. Good luck! This message is from: Cynthia Madden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Before Tim bought Grabbson about 5 years ago, he was owned by Bill Steavenson of Fontenelle, Nebraska who bought him from Harold Jacobson. Bill had Grabbson and four mares that he bred every year. We bought Tank from Bill in 1994. At that time, Grabbson was already at Tim's farm, but still co-ownership with Bill. Soon after that, I believe Bill sold out his share to Tim. We first met Bill and Grabbson five years before that (1989) right after I had discovered Fjords. I have a wonderful picture of Bill and Grabbson taken at that time. (Bill died in 1997). They had a very good relationship with each other. If you are interested in knowing about Grabbson's get, I can only tell you about Tank who I think is one of the most wonderful horses around. He has personality and presence. He is smart and trains very easily. He does have the inherited Fjord weight problem (not limited to Grabbson get).
