What did you use for number? What
about height={(dg.dataProvider.length * dg.rowHeight) + 2}
you might need the + 2 there to account for the 1px border on top and
bottom. For the variableRowHeight, you will have to do a lot more
work. It will be very tough since you cannot just loop through the rows
to find their heights, because the hidden rows arent drawn yet ;)
So that will take so creativity. Maybe someone else has an idea on that,
in the mean time, I will play with the idea. Hope this works for normal
row heights though.

Also, I've noticed individuals with the title of Certified Flex
Instructor/Trainer or something to that effect... What is it, and how

 xml that you can load on to the swf. In order to read
 an xml data at run time you could use

Anyone else get this to actually work from the FB options? I
think the auto-installer option in FlexBuilder2 doesnt work with flash
player 8.5 alpha 3.since all my users are seeing solid blue screens
(meaning the script isnt triggering).

[flexcoders] Flex builder 1.5 or 2.0

Hello everyone,

im new to the group and only just started using the whole Flex
environment and language in the past fewe weeks.  I can see the
advantages of using Flex for the GUI's that my system will use and
using Coldfusion cfc's to manipulate my database and data as a whole.

I am using Coldfusion to develop my main system and i intend to use
Flex to create some powerful GUI's.  However i have been having some
major problems getting to two to work together (cf/flex compiler
merge, Coldfusion cfc's as remote objects).

I have been using Flex Builder 1.5 for a few weeks now and im starting
to build what will be a pretty sophisticated application.  I have been
having a few problems with getting Coldfusion cfc/Remote Objects
working, thankfully i have got a quick fix so i can continue
developing my application for the time being, but i need to get this
problem sorted before i can deploy the system for production use.

My main question is what are the advantages of using Flex Builder 2.0
over 1.5, and indeed the Flex 2.0 language over 1.5.  I was about to
install Flex Builder 2.0 on my laptop to develop the system, but i
just got the remote objects/cfc's working so i thought that if it aint
broke dont fix it!

I am running the cf and flex as integrated JRun 4 servers on one
machine on my network, and i am developing and viewing the cf and flex
applications on my laptop.

Any comments would be helpful.

[flexcoders] Coldfusion cfc's and Flex Remote Objects

Hi,

i have successfully got this working (almost!) at long last. I am
running both my cf and flex as iintegrated JRun servers on my server
machine (port 8700 and 8500 respectively) and i am developing and
accessing the mxml files from my laptop.

I can get the echo cfc to work ok, and i also placed another cfc in
the same directory (plants.cfc) which seems to let me get flex and cf
communicating.

My problem is that when i try to use another cfc in another directory
(not \flex\remoting\samples\) flex doesnt seem to be able to
communicate at all, it just sits there with the busy symbol.

Im not sure whats going on, but i am sure that i have added the
appropriate code in the right places and all the configuration files
(flex's flex-config.xml, cf's gateway-config.xml) seem to be in order!

Its just not working at all and i cant continue developing until i can
reliably have access to the cfc's!

Also, the named remote objects are giving em a bit of trouble...
should i be pointing to the server name or localhost. When i use
localhost, flex doesnt seem to be able to talk to the cfc's, but when
i use the servers name (advent) it seems to work fine.

Basically i cant get my flex to talk to my cfc's when they are stored
in my main cfc directory. I have restarted both the cf and flex
servers on many occasions and i have also restarted the whole machine
on a few occasions just to be sure everything is initialised properly.
I'll give it another restart now just to see.

[flexcoders] MXML file naming conventions

Hi All!

Are there any widespread approach to name MXMLs? I rely on this document
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flash/articles/as_bestpractices_02.html,
but still I don't know the best way to assign names to MXMLs. May be
ClassFunctionClassType.mxml (e. g. UserProfilePage.mxml, where UserProfile
is class function and Page is class type)?

Is your main CFC directory under your webroot or is it setup in the CF
Admin?

Did you setup a crossdomain policy file on your coldfusion instance?

If your cfc's are on your server then you should be using your servername in
the connection URL or a domain name if you have one pointed at that server.

i have successfully got this working (almost!) at long last. I am
running both my cf and flex as iintegrated JRun servers on my server

communicate at all, it just sits there with the busy symbol.

Im not sure whats going on, but i am sure that i have added the
appropriate code in the right places and all the configuration files
(flex's flex-config.xml, cf's gateway-config.xml) seem to be in order!

Its just not working at all and i cant continue developing until i can
reliably have access to the cfc's!

Also, the named remote objects are giving em a bit of trouble...
should i be pointing to the server name or localhost. When i use
localhost, flex doesnt seem to be able to talk to the cfc's, but when
i use the servers name (advent) it seems to work fine.

Basically i cant get my flex to talk to my cfc's when they are stored
in my main cfc directory. I have restarted both the cf and flex
servers on many occasions and i have also restarted the whole machine
on a few occasions just to be sure everything is initialised properly.
I'll give it another restart now just to see.

First thing to check is to see if you can call your cfcs with a regular http
call :
http://localhost/flex/remoting/samples/SomeService.cfc

To start with Flex/CF connectivity, do not use named remote objects.
Simply use the default ColdFusion destination (defined when installing the
updater) + source attribute.

Ex.:
mx:RemoteObject id=someService
destination=ColdFusion
source=flex.remoting.samples.SomeService /

Also note that for client side logging without Flex 2 Builder, a generic
logging mechanism has been introduced which is used by all messaging
based services, including RPC services such as RemoteObject. One logging
target implementation is the TraceTarget which traces log messages out
to the flashlog.txt file with the debug version of the player. Try

Ironically, most flex developers I know
outside this list are like flexcoders? Whats that? 
Ive found using this list gives me the ability to say thats
possible a lot more.of course, most of the solutions are funky
since were still in Beta J Work with what you got though.

Flex Builder 2 has so many neat little
tweaks that make coding life a lot smoother. Just from personal preference

Alt+ (left-arrow/right-arrow)

Control-click on code

Shift-f2

Control-O (huge timesaver)

Control-shift-T


Besides the builder, Flex2 is a lot cleaner in figuring stuff out
 and a lot more functionality has been standardized  added. It is
still in beta, so there are some hiccups but Ive found its worth
the minor issues to upgrade most of my apps.

Hello everyone,

im new to the group and only just started using
the whole Flex
environment and language in the past fewe
weeks. I can see the
advantages of using Flex for the GUI's that my
system will use and
using Coldfusion cfc's to manipulate my database
and data as a whole.

I am using Coldfusion to develop my main system
and i intend to use
Flex to create some powerful GUI's. However
i have been having some
major problems getting to two to work together (cf/flex
compiler
merge, Coldfusion cfc's as remote objects).

I have been using Flex Builder 1.5 for a few weeks
now and im starting
to build what will be a pretty sophisticated
application. I have been
having a few problems with getting Coldfusion
cfc/Remote Objects
working, thankfully i have got a quick fix so i
can continue
developing my application for the time being, but
i need to get this
problem sorted before i can deploy the system for
production use.

My main question is what are the advantages of
using Flex Builder 2.0
over 1.5, and indeed the Flex 2.0 language over
1.5. I was about to
install Flex Builder 2.0 on my laptop to develop
the system, but i
just got the remote objects/cfc's working so i
thought that if it aint
broke dont fix it!

I am running the cf and flex as integrated JRun 4
servers on one
machine on my network, and i am developing and
viewing the cf and flex
applications on my laptop.

Any comments would be helpful.

I've encountered this annoying bug today.
When using the formatFunction attribute of DateField, when the component
looses its focus, it erases the date text field.
 
To reproduce the problem, simply execute the following code from LiveDocs,
select a date and move the focus to the other text input:
mx:DateFormatter id=dfconv formatString=/MM/DD/
mx:Script

On a similar note, anyone know how to send
certain key-strokes back to the browser when it has focus? I use control-t
religiously for tabbing in Firefox and its really annoying when the
flash video sucks those in  rather it somehow gets passed back to the
browser

Hi.

I'm a beginner in Flex.

I need to do an application very easy but my experience in this is a 
little.

I need a JSP where use a application Flex and I can load a file.
I need select a file in a browse window.

[flexcoders] Re: mx:TitleWindow -- SizeGrip?

Been meaning to post this for a while now.  Here's a version of 
Andrew Spaulding's resizable TitleWindow with quite a few 
enhancements.  You'll need to get the buttons.swf and wedge.png 
resources from the download at www.flexdaddy.info.  Also, create 
your own arrow*.* drag cursor images yourself, which should be easy 
enough to do.

Here's the updated code, along with supporting mxml and a sample 
app.  Feel free to use and/or modify as you see fit.  And if you 
make any useful enahncements to it, please post!  :)

I tried both IE and Firefox on winXP and this bug crashes both
browsers when a new node is appended to a leaf node.

Is there a possible work around for this bug do you think?

For the record, one way to fetch tree children on demand, is to pin
the top level nodes to your Tree and then subclass the datadescriptor
getChildren.  

In getChildren you'd run the service calls and return the appropriate
children.

external xml file.  I can't even get the examples in Help to work
(Flex 2beta):

3 var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(xmlFile.xml);

5 loader.addEventListener(EventType.COMPLETE, onComplete);

This gives me an error at line 7 - Void is not a compile time constant.

4 and 5 telling me that request and loader are undefined
properties, even though they're defined immediately above.  What
gives?  and thanks in advance for your help!

Unless Im missing something, you could
use a mx:Model source=xmlFile.xml and use onComplete
eventsor if its in a url, use a HttpService to call it in. Heres
what Id do:

I think some of the docs are obsolete.

It appears to me that lines 4 and 5 aren't actually in a function
definition, which means that they are in the static context of the
surrounding class (you -are- putting this in a class, right?  Flex
doesn't support loose code.)

In that case, request does -not- exist, because its an instance var.

Also, you need to make sure you have 

import flash.net.URLLoader; 
import flash.net.URLRequest;

in your file somewhere.

Also, I think that you'll need to add the COMPLETE event listener to
loader.loadeeInfo rather than just loader.  (I just hit this one
myself!)

[flexcoders] Flex2 :: Button :: Custom Skin Classes




Hello,

I know in previous incarnations of the Button, you would subclass
RectBorder and create a switch or conditional statement based on the
borderStyle which actually showed what 'phase' the button is in.

I see that the phase property now is protected. So we can't call paret.phase in the RectBorder skin class.

What is the correct way of subclassing the RectBorder for the skin styles of mx.controls.Button ?

I traced the borderStyle and came up with inset which is obviously a default that means nothing.

Any ideas adobe ?

[flexcoders] HorizontalList scroll question

I have a horizontal list that is scrolling, is there a way
to programmatically select an item and have it scroll to that selected item? 



I tried doing something like this.



myHorizontalList.hPosition = mySelectedItemsIndex;



That doesnt seem to do anything and if I just set the
selectedItem its selected just not scrolled to.

Yes, Drew McLellan's Flash Satay article has been highly linked. Drew 
was seeking to make pages which make the validators happy by not 
including EMBED. He tested for simple visibility of SWF with only OBJECT 
in some undetermined browsers... I think he later named some of the 
browsers where he saw the SWF.

But to my knowledge no one has done ongoing work against the various 
browser brands, in their various versions on the various platforms, in 
various HTML environments (inside DIV, with certain alignments, etc), 
with the full range of browser-dependent features (printing, JavaScript 
communication, data-passing etc).

The best list I've seen about various browser differences when invoking 
plugins through OBJECT rather than their documented EMBED was at Geoff 
Stearn's place last spring... link and synopsis here:

Summary: Until the browser vendors say they take responsibility for 
correctly invoking plugins via OBJECT, I'd have to urge staying with 
their documented EMBED. There are tricks to keep the validators happy 
when using that tag (dynamic JS writes, etc), but the core problem of 
the HTML 4.0 de jure spec disallowing the de facto standard of the day 
still has repercussions, even here in 2006.

It's an excellent book I have to say, but keep in mind that it was 
written for Flex 1.0, so some of the examples break in 1.5, and a lot of 
them need to be re-written for 2.0.

Besides the examples, it's the concepts that are very important, and 
provide the reader of what features are available in Flex, and how they 
work generally. Though at this point in time, I'd wait for a 2.0 book 
since architecturally a lot of things have changed fundamentally since 1.0.

[flexcoders] Mono MP3s (bug?)

Has anyone else seen this behavior:I have an application that uses Flash 8.5's built-in MP3 player. When the MP3 is a stereo file, it works fine. When I convert the MP3 to a mono file, the file plays in speeded-up mode (a la The Chipmunks).

[flexcoders] Reading or Embedding SWFs?

I'm creating an app that displays SWF slides and plays MP3 files associated with those slides. When I create this application under Flexbuilder, at runtime it opens the external SWF slide files and plays the MP3 files just fine. But when I move the application to a different directory (containing the expected SWFs and MP3s) I get a runtime error complaining about loading the SWF files. Even stranger is the fact that the security message is only complaining about loading SWF files from the local directory. When I comment out the SWF file loading, it's perfectly happy to load MP3 files from the local directory.

I've tried a number of experiments, including copying the SWF file from the directory where flexbuilder creates it (where it works) to a different directory (where it pops up a security message). I don't know if this is expected behavior or a bug, but if it is expected behavior then I think I could solve it if I can compile the SWF files into the app instead of having them as separate files, but I don't know how to do that (and note my previous message about an apparent bug in the @Embed command).

I'd be perfectly happy to compile the external SWF slides directly into the application as some kind of array of images (thus solving the access problem), but so far I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

[flexcoders] DG display with xml and webservice

I am using a webservice to call a function from my cfc that returns
data as xml. When the data results are received, I convert the results
into an array named agents. I am trying to populate my dg with the
array. When I click on the dg I am calling the function
agentDisplayQry. Which calls the function in my cfc. However, I cant
get this to work. Can someone help me with this.

There's certainly a bug in here, but you can try replacing the
appendChild call:

  var newNodeAdded:XML = selectedNode.appendChild(newItem);

with:

 selectedNode.insertChildBefore(null, newItem);

Also, I changed selectedNode to type XML from Object.

This works for me, the Tree see's the update and converts the leaf to a
closed branch with the new node.

Let me know if you'll still have problems.

Got problem with my custom class inheriting default AS3 Array one. 
Not sure it's allowed in AS3, but it worked well with previous 
ActionScript 2.
 
I've created small test case, it throws runtime error somewhere 
inside Array.splice call. Also in real application I am getting IE 
GPFs right after exception dialog closed.

Theres a lot of stuff missing it
seems in your class. AS3 is strong-type coding, so you need to code in
everything youre assuming it understands. I dont have the time to
check it out, but my first guess is to have the set/get commands and call the
splice/push methods on the actual array (maybe using this 
think in AS2 to AS3 the implementation of this changed).

Incidentally, if I had to guess, I'd guess its a Flash 8 SWF that uses
filters, perhaps a bevel gradient or something?

If so, I've fixed this, it should be coming out in Beta 2.

 symptom of a badly parsed SWF tag.  (We embed SWFs all the time.)
 
 Please file a bug, and include one of your SWFs that causes

[flexcoders] Re: DG display with xml and webservice

Have you verified that the click event is actually being processed 
by your datagrid?  If not, try using a trace or Alert.show for the 
click handler, or try changing the click event to something like 
creationComplete.  If you find the problem is not the click event, 
then it's likely there is an issue with the data returned by your 
web service.

I know the click event is working properly. And I know the data being
returned from my webservice is returning correclty. I have have tested
teh cfc and verfied that it is returned the xml.

I am just not sure if I am connecting the webservice to the dg properly.

 I have an application that uses Flash 8.5's built-in MP3 
 player. When the MP3 is a stereo file, it works fine. When I 
 convert the MP3 to a mono file, the file plays in speeded-up 
 mode (a la The Chipmunks). 

Sounds like its reading two mono samples and making one stereo sample.
I suppose that might happen if the header was messed up, although
perusing the Flex audio transcoder source, its hard to see how it could
get confused about this!

Could you email me a copy of the mono MP3?

not find right solution. For me it sounds like a bug in Array.splice 
implementation, (unless Array class is final/sealed by design and is 
not allowed to be inherited).

webservice result handler would be something like:

Yes, I also tested super() before and it didn't help me. 
As far as I know, it's allowed to omit super() call in AS3 
constructor, at least documentation refers it as:
...If you omit the call to super(), Flex automatically calls it at 
the beginning of your
constructor

I may be wrong - havent looked at AS3 in a while, and I couldnt find it after a 10 minute hunt, but I think I read somewhere you are no longer allowed to subclass Array

That would be unfortunate if true.  The current docs *do* say this, 
however:

You can subclass Array and override or add methods; but specify the 
subclass as dynamic or you will lose the ability to store data in an 
array.

There are known problems with sub-classing Array, but not sure the status. 
For now, just use composition until we know it's fixed.

Hi,Things have changed in Macromedia Flash Player 8.5 and AS3. Like LoadVars, _level0 etc are not there in Macromedia Flash Player 8.5.You can look at the AS2 to AS3 migration document and do the changes accordingly.
BTW! You can you use HTTPService in Flex 1.5/Flex 2.0 to achieve similar results. HTTPService is easier to use. You don't need to use LoadVars to load data from a URL or file in Flex.Migration document:

Hi Bruce,Loading local SWF might not be working because of Security Sandbox. Try giving the permission to your main to load SWFs from context-menu of Flash Player.Context-menu Settings first tab Advanced
It would show advanced settings manager from macromedia.com, from there you can the directory.Though, I expect somebody would confirm this. You can also try reading the security white paper for Flash Player 8 here:

8.5, so information in above white paper might not totally apply.As far as embedding swfs is concerned, I think that should work. [flexcoders] FB2 :: Outline Script block class tree

Hello,

You know what would be awsome in the Flex Builder 2 IDE?

When I am developing mxml components(SWC), I am starting to change my
developing perspective and find it easy to create a quasi component
using the powerful as3 interface along with the tremendously efficient
mxml ui designing.

I am also finding this to be my new path towards an RCD ( Rapid Component Development ;-) pattern.

Now, if you could put the awsome as3 outline tree where the
Script node lies within the source view of an mxml component,
development time would increase 10 fold!). I know you would have to
parse inside the script tags but, it would tremendously help the FB2
component developers IDE.

Any thoughts?

PS In the last few months I really have changed my programming style. I
bet some others feel this change to with working with Flex 2beta. It
seems like for the most part other than HEAVY component
classes/frameworks(needing class structure), this mxml component
pardigm is very solid comming from flash component developmer.
It's funny how things change.

Not sure of cross browser solution, but in IE you can trap an event when activeX gets focus. You can then call some function in ActionScript using ExternalInterface API.-abdul

It is understood that many things won't work because it is beta quality software but options shown would function properly in release version.I think, it's not an issue. Macromedia Flash Player 8.5 might be making requests to server to download the required version of player since server still hosts Flash Player 8, which is the released version. Request might be failing

I believe, you are
talking about express-install. Not sure, if that works for Macromedia Flash
Player 8.5 considering it is still under-development and would not be good idea
to update user-machines with a binary which is not of release quality. 

May be after some-months, it would start working..

Hi Jan,This is not a strange behaviour. mx:Model /, mx:XML / etc are compiler tags, which means content inside them (or linked) would be compiled in the SWF. It is well documented and it has been the same in Flex
1.5 as well.You use @Embed (..), mx:XML /, mx:Model / when you want to compile the assets with-in the final SWFs.As Harish said, if you want to load content/assets on runtime, you should consider other available APIs/tags,

I think, you can embed quite good amount of data in SWF in Flex 2.0. Where as Flex 1.5 had some limit. Check out the Flexcoders FAQ, link is in the footer of this email. You can also search the flexoders archive, I remember it has been discussed once.

[flexcoders] syntax / code hinting help for a custom classes 'type' variable

I'm extending the effects class to allow me to have a custom tag that 
can tween a component in a known and limited number of ways.

I'm not really sure what the correct syntax is to define those limited 
types of class methods.

Say my tween class allows you to tween the alpha, the scale, and the 
coordinates of a designated item on the stage.

So, I'm not sure how to define a variable in my class 
called tweenType so it consists of 3 potential values named alphaFX, 
scaleFX and coordFX, with one of them being a default.

I'd also like to be able to type myMX:effect tweenType=alphaFX... 
and it code hint the known values of the variable in the class.

I'm not really sure what sort object/variable is the correct one to use 
in AS3.

[flexcoders] CF/Flex Integration Issue: RangeError

Hey all, I have been working on a sample app using CF and Flex 2. 
and so far its working smooth...Until I run across a query that has 
no records in it. I have it take the results and bind them to a 
datagrid, this is the error it gives me:

is there some sort of try/catch I can run or something to make it 
stop telling me this error? I'd prefer it to just set the 
dataprovider to null so nothing shows up rather than tell me that 
there is nothing in the array...I don't know what to do here. Any 
Suggestions?

FlexBuilder 2 is much better than FlexBuilder 1.5. It is based on Eclipse and has better development work flow, debugging capabilities, project management and much more.

oh yeah,

The reason I found this is becasue I had suspisions of this class but I added
the public modifier to it and THEN actually got the error of a duplicated id.

So maybe the problem is you ar not checking both var and public var for
duplications of id's ?

After I sliced and diced my project to all (**) I found an interesting
thing in a sub mxml component.

I had duplicated a button id.

1) A button id=drag_bt was in the mxml componen xml.
2) There was an mx:Script block preceding the mxml.
3) in the script block I had accidently declared
- var drag_bt:Button

Once I commented out this ONE LINE, the whole project of over 15 classes
started working again!

I don't know what the problem with the compiler is but, it didn't say
duplicated reference. Just internal build error. I mean come on you know what
the odds of me finding something like that that shut down my whole project is!

but... no dice, I did exactly whaty you said, still I can't get passed the

Now, the error log, I suppose this si something I have had to set up, and right
now there really is no error log?

Anyway, I have this error registering 2 times in the queue for
TEOListPaneComponent resource.

Then I get a funny warning Application file TESTComponents.mxml does not
exists.

You know what, I know it dosn't exist becasue I deleted it! :)

I also went into the properties and made sure it wasn't still registered, it
was but had (deleted) next to it. So I delete the referecne there.

Now, I also have created an entirly new project copied the mxml in. Does not
work, next I started cutting out parts to see if I could get it to build. Yes,
haha I took out my 2 custom components that were in an HBox and it worked. That
still hasn't helped me! Yes, I know the problem is in my component somwhere
but, I don't know where.

Adboe engineers are awsome, I jut hope there will be a more elegent way to fix
this our at least guide us developers becasue I am wastin time, hehe time is
money they say.

Hi All,



I have a following situation



Server A  Flex Application

Server B  Proxy Server (Apache)



Server B has a mapping 



I have following settings on my Proxy Server B

Mime.types file has following line for Flash

application/x-shockwave-flash swf

On Server A flex-config.xml has following setting



 external-proxy


locationhmsee.hmssoftware.net/location


/external-proxy



Now when I try to get to the flex application through Proxy
Server it properly forwards the request to Login Screen. Once I pass login
information it tries to open the Flex Application and my browser shows Opening
status forever. 



Is there something I am missing here to get the Flex
Application running using Proxy Server?
