Now, I want the Flex 2 release just as much as the rest of you, but I would rather it be a solid release than just releasing this week. I am still confused that final pricing has not been determined and announced. Is there going to be such a great announcement on pricing that Adobe is wanting to get a massive bang for their buck? RE: [flexcoders] Re: About dates sent to a webservice. Is this correct?
I've read through that thread, and this hardly seems like acceptable behaviour to me. We're sending dates from a .NET web service too, and we don't care about the time. We're plotting them on a calendar. We can't afford to have dates sent as one thing, and then rolled back to the previous day because the client machine is in a different timezone. There *needs* to be a way to turn this off. If my web service says an event occurs on the 1st June, I want Flex to give me the 1st June. I've seen a few people mentioning having problems with datagrid tabbing. I thought i'd might mention this as well. i haven't been able to create a test to demonstrate this, but what i have noticed is that when i tab from column0(which has the itemEditorInstance) to column1 i lose the tabbing and focus goes on to the datagrid. when i then set itemeditorinstance back in column0 and try tabbing again, it all works. my datagrid is extended and has an itemeditend event. regards bod Yahoo! Yes - I think it's an issue with 1.1 In our last Flex 2/.NET 2 application we were able to correctly pass date objects between Flex and .NET The only thing you have to watchout for is to make sure that the DateTime object your return from .NET has its Kind set to UTC - if so, it should work fine. More date madness. Some of the dates from our web services come out as dates in Flex. However, now I'm returning a whole tree of objects, I'm having issues. Title: RE: [flexcoders] Re: About dates sent to a webservice. Is this correct? This doesn't seem to work in .Net 2.0 either. I can send a date as UTC, but Flex still deals with it in the local timezone, so if we do: Alert.show(myService.myMethod.lastResult.startDate.month) We get the wrong month when the date is 1st, and our timezone is behind GMT. [flexcoders] Column Drag,Drop, and Add Flex2 B3
I'm wanting to provide my users drag and drop column add functionality. Adding the columns is no problem, what I'm having trouble with is the column header drag proxy(can't get a handle on it) , and getting it to act like it's dragging a col. The drag over operation selects the entire grid as a target and I want it to select a column similar to if you where dragging cols around to re-order them. I want to put the dragged column between other columns and show the drop feedback. Is it possible (most everything is)? Any sample/demo/code/anything else out there, or anyone doing this? Also dragging columns out is not looking easy, as the drag is blocking the column within the grid. Thanks for any ideas. Jason Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Great things are happening at Yahoo! Groups. RE: [flexcoders] Developing RIA book
Arnold, Thanks for your question; if your intent is to take code and type it in verbatim as examples, you'll find lots of things won't compile from Flex 1.0 to Flex 2. However, our intent in writing the book was always to articulate concepts and principles more than code, and I hope that much of that will still be considered relevant by the community. It is our remit to update the book for Flex 2, but that effort is only just about to be undertaken. I'd suggest that the book will definitely get you off in the right direction, and I'd hope it'd be of value to you. I think this is definately a bug. Attached is a screenshot showing my dates that are strings, and the relevant part of the WSDL (all items with string dates are of one of the types included there). [flexcoders] JTwain and Flex
Hi I am using JTwain to read a scanned image from the Client UI. For this, I have written an applet which will detect the source attached to the client's machine, scan the image and show it on the user's browser. Then, by using Applet-Servlet communication, I need to store this image in the server's file system. Though this has been possible to achieve, I need to keep my UI as Flex. So, I need to call the applet from inside my Flex UI and render the image on the browser. Also I need to use the file upload functionality to upload this image to the server. Has anyone worked on a similar engagement? How can I use the File-Upload feature to upload the image(java.awt.image object) to the server from my Flex UI ? Inputs please. `Rohan __._,_.___ -- Flexcoders Mailing List FAQ: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/files/flexcodersFAQ.txt Search Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com SPONSORED LINKS Web site design development Computer software development Software design and development Macromedia flex Software development best practice YAHOO! [flexcoders] Web service - Bug or by design?
I've tracked down the problem. In the returned SOAP, I have: anyType xsi:type="MyEvent" StartDate2006-06-26T15:56:11.5841401+01:00/StartDate /anyType And in the WSDL, it says MyEvent's StartDate is a date. However, I'm assuming Flex is ignoring the xsi:type party, and just treating it as an object (and every property, therefore asa string). Is this correct behaviour, or should Flex be reading the type sepcified? [flexcoders] Date constructor doesn't understand SOAP date format?
As a workaround for the problem I posted earlier, I've just wrapped my use of Dates in new Date(x), but I've found that if you pass it something like: 2006-06-26T15:58:57.7727474+01:00 It silently doesn't work (if you wrap String() around it to alert it, it gives Invalid Date). This is the format .NET's DateTimes are serialised for web services. Is this not supported? It works when things are typed in web services, so Flex/FP definitely knows how to parse it. Do I need to re-invent that? :( Thanks, Danny The information contained in this e-mail and/or any attachments is confidential and intended only for the individual(s) to which it is addressed. RE: [flexcoders] Using JMS Adapter: 'javax.naming.NamingException unknown protocol : joram.
Here's my advice on troubleshooting the issue. In flex-enterprise-services.xml (may be called services-config.xml depending on which prerelease you're using), enable logging and the debug level and check your server console for errors. Another thing that might be helpful is ensure that you can reach the destinations via jndi. You can do this by using a jsp page. If the page runs without stack traces, then you know that your jndi and jms factory and destination are configured correctly. Be sure to update flex-message-service.xml with those jndi names. If you have troubles running the jsp page, the destinations are not configured correctly and you should check your application server documentation for details. jndiTest.jsp % Properties p = new Properties(); // as configured in your destination's initial-context-environment in flex-message-service.xml p.setProperty(java.naming.factory.initial,fr.dyade.aaa.jndi2.client.N amingContextFactory); p.setProperty(com.sonicsw.jndi.mfcontext.domain,Domain1); p.setProperty(java.naming.provider.url,joram://localhost:16010); p.setProperty(java.naming.security.principal,anonymous); p.setProperty(java.naming.security.credentials,anonymous); Context ctx = new InitialContext(p); ctx.lookup(TCF); // this maps to connection-factory on the destination in flex-message-service.xml ctx.lookup(sampleTopic); // this maps to destination-jndi-name on the destination in flex-message-service.xml % /* If you get an exception running with the above try, generally application servers make resource available to the application at java:comp/env/resource-name. Re: [flexcoders] Can Flex record audio locally?
I don't recall anything. What they can do is look into Rebus by MDM. It is in beta/testing right now. This is if they are bent on using Flex for the UI. They could do it all with .Net but Flex would most likely provide the front-end and Flash Player the install base they'd like. http://www.mdmforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16153hl=rebusWe built a sound recording app using Flash 8 and Zinc 2.5 so they aren't bound to Rebus if they don't want to be Windows specific. On 6/26/06, Mike Potter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all: Drupal is looking to create a project that will allow users to record audio locally and then upload that audio to the server. You will need to communicate with your applet using _javascript_. Have the flex app call a js function that communicates with the applet, and vice versa. You may want to look into the Flex-AJAX bridge at labs.adobe.com to see how this can be done. The Flex file upload components are used to upload physical files from the file system to your server. Look at the FileReference class (http://livedocs.macromedia.com/labs/1/flex20beta3/langref//flash/net/FileReference.html). If there is no physical file, you will need to create a method that allows you to send the image data to the server. [flexcoders] Using validators that call a service
Imagine I have a form with a number of fields on. As part of the pre-submit validation, I want to parcel some of them up and ask a server-side object 'is this combination valid'. Trouble is, firing off the service call from the validator method is easy enough, but the onResult that then gets called can't return a ValidationResult, because it's asynchronous, and the doValidate() method will already have returned. *So* - any bright ideas ? I posted this over the weekend, but I am sure most people, including adobe, did not see it.I saw that someone else had exactly the same problem in another thread and initially responded to that thread. [flexcoders] Re: Repost of bug issue over weekend
I don't think this is a bug as I am not sure how it could work any differently. You are repeatedly adding the same item (the string hello) to the list so it has no way to differentiate between them and uses the newest instance for the rollOver and rollOut actions. If you want to display the same string multiple times I think you will need to fill your ArrayCollection with objects and access a property via a labelFunction. Does that make more sense? Yeah it makes sense, that is what you should have said. As far as you being worried about others making YOU look bad, check back to what Tim Hoff said about that issue, I would write the same thing verbatim. Besides, web sites, the way users are conditioned by the next generation of web application(which are web sites) developers/designers, it's anyones guess. Some might have thought going from a command line to a Windows UI was to much to handle but it worked. People like motion. There is a good article on Adobe where a deisgner talks about humans and movement. It's part of use, it's up to you to define a usable way to give the mind what it loves anyway. [flexcoders] F2: Cascading states
I'm trying to cascade states (mxml format) in a top down fashion. At each level children are being added, and I need to wait for this to happen before trying to effect their states. What is the best event model to approach this? Does that make more sense? Well, interestingly, I dont think graphic designers have any kind of corner on usability. There are three disciplines involved here, programming, interface design, and graphic design. Some, though few people are good at all three. I think the biggest crime though is the assumption that good graphic designers have some inherent understanding of human interaction. Of course I presume here when you say designer you mean graphic designer which is usually what people mean. But great human interface designers (eg bruce tognazini Jacob Nielsen) dont (perhaps rarely do) have any facility with graphic design and art in my experience. I for one am on the opposite end of the spectrum being decent in human interface and coding, but unable to make decent artwork. My point. Let a million flowers bloom. The tools are what they are. Making things easier will spawn lots of good stuff and lots of bad stuff. And so it goes.RegardsHank On 6/25/06, Michael Schmalle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: those who decide to use Flex to do website designs rank right with those who did all that other crap in the early days of flash with bouncing balls and forced site intros and such. I have an example here: http://three.fsphost.com/flex2/PieCategory/PieCategoryApp.html (may be slow to load but just give it time)When you click between the radio buttons, it changes the datasource and renderer like so: public var monthRenderer:ClassFactory = new ClassFactory(MonthRenderer); public var seasonRenderer:ClassFactory = new ClassFactory(SeasonRenderer); public function dataChange(e:Event):void { if (rg.selectedValue == Months) { switchChart.setStyle (itemRenderer, monthRenderer); switchChart.dataProvider = dataSet; } else { switchChart.setStyle(itemRenderer, seasonRenderer); switchChart.dataProvider = dataSet2; } }The problem is that something sticks in the first renderer and isn't cleared out when you select the second one. Notice that the only colored slices are the ones after the three slices in the original array. Any ideas on why that is? Is it a bug in the pieSeries code, or is there something I'm missing in my code? I based it off of Ely's stoplight renderer example.-- Jason __._,_.___ -- Flexcoders Mailing List FAQ: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/files/flexcodersFAQ.txt Search Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com SPONSORED LINKS Web site design development Computer software development Software design and development Macromedia flex Software development best practice YAHOO! Re: [flexcoders] Re: Repost of bug issue over weekend
Thanks ben. Yes it does help. It is, from my perpsective, even now understanding what it seems to do, be an unexpected result. Perhaps it should generate an error, or not allow you to have an arrayCollection of strings instead of objects, since it is always possible for a list to have multiple matching strings. IMHO it should either do the right thing, or generate an error, not create some anomalous user interface effect with certain data sets. Because this will work right with one set of data, and not right with another data set, I would consider it a bug, though not of the kind I initially thought. [flexcoders] yField in specific Series types
Hi,Came across a bit of an annoyance this morning...I've got a dual-axis chart which displays a LineSeries and a ColumnSeries. I'd like to use the same dataTipFunction for both Series. However, if I try to access the yField inside the function for the particular series, I need to cast the type. RE: [flexcoders] Re: yField in specific Series types
Hi Brendan. When building an OO framework, there's an endless set of decisions one has to make in trading off between accurately representing commonality and 'is a' relationships, and keeping things simple. We considered pushing some of the more common fields of the cartesian series into a baseclass inserted between them and the Series base, but opted for simplicity instead. In this case, you could take advantage of the dynamic side of AS3 and leave the variable untyped. When a reference is untyped (typed as *), the compiler defers validating property references until the code is run at runtime. The tradeoff, of course, is that this then becomes a dynamic reference, which sacrifices some performance. In this case...for a dataTip function, it's probably harmless (i.e., a single dynamic access that's not happening inside a critical loop, or being invoked simultaneously by many components). But it's a good tradeoff to be aware of in the general case. Ely. [flexcoders] ComboBase value? Possible bug
Hi all - I'm trying to work around an issue that I am having with a custom combo-box. It seems that it is setting the value to empty string (i.e. ""), when it should be null, which is then seen as a difference in the dataGrid itemEditEnd event, and so it tries to cast the "" String to the class type used for display in the ComboBox.It looks like it comes down to this function in ComboBase. value in this case is "", where as it is initialized as null. I'm trying to find out where value gets set to "", but it looks like it must be in the Sprite code, because I can't seem to find any other setters. Does this code make sense? Should it be setting the _selectedItem to 'data' rather than to 'value'... private function setSelectedItem(data:Object, clearFirst:Boolean = true):void { //2 code paths: one for before collection, one after if (!collection || collection.length == 0) { _selectedItem = value; selectedItemChanged = true; invalidateDisplayList(); return; } ... }Thanks much for any help.-Scott __._,_.___ -- Flexcoders Mailing List FAQ: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/files/flexcodersFAQ.txt Search Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com SPONSORED LINKS Web site design development Computer software development Software design and development Macromedia flex Software development best practice YAHOO! RE: [flexcoders] Re: Shouldn't we use Flex to built website
I agree with hank. Usability and User experience are often directly related to colors and fonts. I think User Interface is a different ball game all together. I have heard many developers debating over this their point what makes u think developers cant create sexy user friendly UIs. They can. For that matter I know some designers who are great developers too. But the point is FOCUS. In any work which involves technical input and creative input, it would be best if people focus on different areas to finally make one really productive output.. In my experience, when a developer is given the task of making the UI usable, they usually translate it directly to slick effects and jazzy colors. User experience is much beyond that. The industry is just waking up to that factor. But still theres a long way to go for usability and user experience to be given its due importance. As hank buckets it, programming, usability and design should be treated separately. In fact I would like to add information architecture to the list as well. Anyway, I guess we are straying away hereJ. I talk too much dont i? ;) From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of hank williams Sent: Monday, June 26, 2006 11:25 AM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [flexcoders] Re: Shouldn't we use Flex to built website On 6/26/06, Nick Collins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think you misunderstand me. I'm not saying anyone here falls into this category, but typically it was done by people who were solely developers and didn't have an ounce of design sense in their body, from my observations. My point is that Flex is a developer tool, and while some developers are pretty design savvy, most do not fall into that category so my fear is that if developers start using Flex to build sites, we'll be seeing a lot of sites springing up with lots of neat functionality with blurs and fades and slides and stuff, but zero usability and no quality user experience. Re: [flexcoders] Re: yField in specific Series types
Ely,Well it hadn't even dawned on me to leave it untyped. Given the performance issues, and the intended use in this case that's a great solution. As always, thanks for the quick reply.Brendan On 6/26/06, Ely Greenfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Brendan. Ely. RE: [flexcoders] converting from screen display to print ready PDF
I can't figure out a smart way to convert the pixel coords over to inch/mm/pt measurements I think typical screen resolutions are 72, 96, and 108 pixels/inch. I don't think you can get the number for your monitor through a Flash/Flex API. But you can always measure your screen with a ruler. Thank you, this clears some things up. :) I was actually allocating memory up to 100mb and then seeing if it's collected by letting it sit there with no activity, and watching the process memory usage (couldn't think of another way). You can later remove a component from a container using the removeChild() method. If there are no references to the component, it is eventually deleted from memory by the garbage collection mechanism of Flash Player. The above taken from the doc's, lead me to believe that there was a garbage collection process every (x)min's. If the player only does this when it needs to get back memory, then that would explain why I did not see it collected. What lead me to the question was the following scenario: I have a single component based on the viewstack for the views, this component listens for event state changes in the program to load new views, the events it gets come from another class (think observer pattern). So with this I can load multiple copies of a view with different data(this is where I seen a problem). Even though a view was removed from the viewstack it still received data change events (which it listens to in order to see if it needs to load new data (think chain of responsibility here) where each view gets the event and decides if the data is destined for it (the data it self is just a guid that I use to reference the xml data needed to be loaded). The scenario may seem weird, but no object knows what data is being accessed except the view that is responsible for displaying it. If the view was really unloaded then the event should not get through. So now I remove a view, and in the removed view I get ride of the listeners in the unload event, clean up any child objects/classes/data providers etc.. So the view dataprovider modelloader etc.. controller etc.. >From what I understand from your answer is that if the view is removed, and I clean up the listeners and local references i.e. (set dataprovider and controller to null) view dataprovider controller Then I should be alright. Is this correct? My original thinking was that if it's removed to the garbage collection how is it that it's still getting the events? I was thinking that this was a protected space. I can't get the instance back from the garbage collection, however the instance is still very much alive and kicking. Is this making sense? Are these correct assumptions? Thank you for your help. Should one have to remove all objects created through the or just on the child being removed? I'm not really following your texavery toto titi example because you didn't explain which one you're removing. Let's suppose you're removing toto as a child of texavery. If you're not keeping any references to toto or titi, then both become eligible for garbage collection; the fact that toto holds a reference to its child titi doesn't matter, because the two of them are isolated from all other objects. Is there a way to force the garbage collection clean up, or destroy an object completely? There are no APIs for controlling garbage collection.
