Pricing as follows:

Flex Builder 2 - $499, $749 w/charting
FDS - $6,000 (100 concurrent users), $20,000 (enterprise)

To Adobe or anyone who knows.

Did I miss the announcement?

We are expecting the Flex 2 release by the end of June? Right?

If so, then why is there no definitive information regarding the
pricing for all of the Flex 2 products?

I went to www.adobe.com and found nothing regarding Flex 2 pricing.

Now, I want the Flex 2 release just as much as the rest of you, but
I would rather it be a solid release than just releasing this week.
So, if it is going to be delayed, I can live with that, but I would
appreciate being told.

We all realize that release dates can slide, but it would be nice to
know.

I am still confused that final pricing has not been determined and
announced.

Is there going to be such a great announcement on pricing that Adobe
is wanting to get a massive bang for their buck? That's OK too.

However, it just seems a little confusing to me.

If anyone can shed some light to the uninformed, it would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack

Setting myChart.verticalAxis.maximum in AS (in Flex 1.5) works just

RE: [flexcoders] Re: About dates sent to a webservice. Is this correct?

2006-06-26 Thread Daniel Tuppeny

I've read through that thread, and this hardly seems like acceptable
behaviour to me.

We're sending dates from a .NET web service too, and we don't care about
the time. We're plotting them on a calendar. We can't afford to have
dates sent as one thing, and then rolled back to the previous day
because the client machine is in a different timezone. There *needs* to
be a way to turn this off. If my web service says an event occurs on the
1st June, I want Flex to give me the 1st June.

What's the point in Flex translating it, and then me having to translate
it back (and remember to do this *everywhere*)?

Yes this is correct. I recently had a long thread about this. What I
was told by Adobe is that If a web service defined the element-type in
WSDL as `dateTime' and sends a value that does not include a time zone
component Flex has to assume that this is UTC time and will
automatically adjust the Date value to your local time zone.

You can read my previous thread, including a post by Peter Farland

[flexcoders] flex2b3 - datgrid tabbing problem as well

2006-06-26 Thread bhaq1972
I've seen a few people mentioning having problems with datagrid
tabbing. I thought i'd might mention this as well.

i haven't been able to create a test to demonstrate this, but what i
have noticed is that when i tab from column0(which has the
itemEditorInstance) to column1 i lose the tabbing and focus goes on to
the datagrid.

when i then set itemeditorinstance back in column0 and try tabbing
again, it all works.

my datagrid is extended and has an itemeditend event.

regards
bod

RE: [flexcoders] Re: About dates sent to a webservice. Is this correct?

2006-06-26 Thread Dirk Eismann
Yes - I think it's an issue with 1.1

In our last Flex 2/.NET 2 application we were able to correctly pass date
objects between Flex and .NET

The only thing you have to watchout for is to make sure that the DateTime
object your return from .NET has its Kind set to UTC - if so, it should work
fine.

I just tested this out (to see how bad it was!), and my web service
returned:

dateTime

Which includes timezone info. When I call ToString() on the flash date,
it returns exactly the same (10:38+1:00). Is this just an issue with
.NET 1.1? We're using 2.0.

[flexcoders] Type Coercion failed Error when returning date from web service

2006-06-26 Thread Daniel Tuppeny

More date madness.Some of the dates
from our web services come out as dates in Flex. However, now I'm returning a
whole tree of objects, I'm having issues. The type in question is defined in the
WSDL as this:s:complexType name="Event" s:complexContent
mixed="false" s:extension
base="tns:Item"
s:sequence
s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="StartDate" type="s:dateTime"
/
/s:sequence
/s:extension
/s:complexContent/s:complexTypeWhich correctly has the DateTime type.
When I try to access is in Flex, I get this error:TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert
"2006-09-28T11:13:52.2254775+01:00" to Date.at

returns a date, it's fine. I'm not sure why! :-(

Title: RE: [flexcoders] Re: About dates sent to a webservice. Is this correct?

This doesn't seem to work in .Net 2.0 either. I can send a
date as UTC, but Flex still deals with it in the local timezone, so if we
do:

Alert.show(myService.myMethod.lastResult.startDate.month)

We get the wrong month when the date is 1st, and our
timezone is behind GMT. We have to remember to use the .UtcMonth etc. properties
(which is likely to be the cause of many hard-to-find bugs in the
future!).

with 1.1

In our last Flex 2/.NET 2
application we were able to correctly pass date objects between Flex and .NET

The only thing you have to watchout for is
to make sure that the DateTime object your return from .NET has its Kind set to
UTC - if so,it should work fine.

Dirk.

[flexcoders] Problem using ArrayCollection source as XML

2006-06-26 Thread jmorpher03

Hi,
Can anyone please help me with ArrayCollection ?
I am trying to set an XML result from the server as a source to the ArrayCollection and use it to dynamically generate ComboBoxes, if the XML result contains repeating tags, it works, otherwise, the ArrayCollection does not seem to set itself to the source and I cannot access any property like the "Length" etc., Here is the actionscript and XML extract :
Note that if there are multiple categoryHierarchy tags in my xml, it works fine.
ActionScript:

[flexcoders] Column Drag,Drop, and Add Flex2 B3

2006-06-26 Thread sourcecoderia
I'm wanting to provide my users drag and drop column add functionality.
Adding the columns is no problem, what I'm having trouble with is the
column header drag proxy(can't get a handle on it) , and getting it to
act like it's dragging a col. The drag over operation selects the
entire grid as a target and I want it to select a column similar to if
you where dragging cols around to re-order them. I want to put the
dragged column between other columns and show the drop feedback.

Is it possible (most everything is)?
Any sample/demo/code/anything else out there, or anyone doing this?

Also dragging columns out is not looking easy, as the drag is blocking
the column within the grid.

Thanks for any ideas.

RE: [flexcoders] Developing RIA book

2006-06-26 Thread Steven Webster

Arnold,

Thanks for your question; if your intent is to take code
and type it in verbatim as examples, you'll find lots of things won't compile
from Flex 1.0 to Flex 2. However, our intent in writing the book was
always to articulate concepts and principles more than code, and I hope that
much of that will still be considered relevant by the
community.

It is our remit to update the book for Flex 2, but that
effort is only just about to be undertaken.

I'd suggest that the book will definitely get you off in
the right direction, and I'd hope it'd be of value to you.

Best,

Steven

I tried to recreate this with a simple example, and it

More date madness.Some of the dates

whole tree of objects, I'm having issues. The type in question is defined in the

s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="StartDate" type="s:dateTime"
/
/s:sequence

/s:complexContent/s:complexTypeWhich correctly has the DateTime type.
When I try to access is in Flex, I get this error:TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert

Sorry. Flex 2 Beta 3. It only works if I remove the parameters from the request tag. However, I'm not sure how to pass parameters in, otherwise. I believe this all worked fine for me, when using only AS:

RE: [flexcoders] Type Coercion failed Error when returning date from web service

2006-06-26 Thread Daniel Tuppeny

I think this is definately a bug. Attached is a screenshot
showing my dates that are strings, and the relevant part of the WSDL (all items
with string dates are of one of the types included there). The dates at the top
level are fine, but those deeper down have just been changed to
strings.

I'll keep trying to reproduce it in a small sample I can
post, but if anyone has any ideas, they'd be most
welcome.

flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: RE: [flexcoders] "Type Coercion

I tried to recreate this with a simple example, and it
didn't happen. I think the dates might be being changed to strings when passed
into my component, like this:

mx:Script![CDATA[[Bindable]public
var
dataProvider:Object;[Bindable]public
var
displayType:String;]]/mx:Scriptmx:TitleWindow
title="Timeline" width="100%"
height="100%"link:TimelineBox
dataProvider="{dataProvider}" width="100%" displayType="{displayType}"
//mx:TitleWindow

I'm in the process of creating a simple version of that too
:-(

flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: [flexcoders] "Type Coercion

More date madness.Some of the dates
from our web services come out as dates in Flex. However, now I'm returning a
whole tree of objects, I'm having issues. The type in question is defined in the
WSDL as this:s:complexType name="Event" s:complexContent
mixed="false" s:extension
base="tns:Item"
s:sequence
s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="StartDate" type="s:dateTime"
/
/s:sequence
/s:extension
/s:complexContent/s:complexTypeWhich correctly has the DateTime type.
When I try to access is in Flex, I get this error:TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert
"2006-09-28T11:13:52.2254775+01:00" to Date.at
TimelineRow$iinit()If I create a simple web service that directly
returns a date, it's fine. I'm not sure why! :-(

I created a

[flexcoders] Re: div like behaviour?

2006-06-26 Thread klumikaze
I've been trying to get the Flow.as code working in Flex 2...

I've discovered that layoutChildren() is now updateDisplayList() and
that the Container class is now under mx.core.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for something else that
might have changed? Or even if there is a new way to do this with the
new Flex 2 containers.

Thanks for your time,

Brian

  In other words I'm looking for something like the div-tag of plain old

  scrollbars.

 You mean flow layout?

 // Flow.as

 /**

 class Flow extends mx.containers.Container
 {
   public function layoutChildren():Void
   {
 var vm:Object = getViewMetricsAndMargins();

 var lastY:Number = vm.top;

 var rowHeight:Number = 0;

 for (var i:Number = 0; i  numChildren; i++)
 {
   var child:Object = getChildAt(i);

   if (lastX + child.preferredWidth  layoutWidth - vm.right)
   {
 lastX = vm.left;
 lastY += rowHeight;
   }

   child.move(lastX, lastY);

   lastX += child.preferredWidth;
   rowHeight = Math.max(rowHeight, child.preferredHeight);
 }

 super.layoutChildren();
   }
 }

 You should also override the 'measure' method to enable the container
 to correctly measure itself. The above code only does the job of
 laying out (which is okay if you're always specifying a width and
 height explicitly).

[flexcoders] JTwain and Flex

2006-06-26 Thread tinywhistles

Hi
I am using JTwain to read a scanned image from the Client UI. For this, I have written an applet which will detect the source attached to the client's machine, scan the image and show it on the user's browser. Then, by using Applet-Servlet communication, I need to store this image in the server's file system.
Though this has been possible to achieve, I need to keep my UI as Flex. So, I need to call the applet from inside my Flex UI and render the image on the browser. Also I need to use the file upload functionality to upload this image to the server.
Has anyone worked on a similar engagement? How can I use the File-Upload feature to upload the image(java.awt.image object) to the server from my Flex UI ?
Inputs please.

[flexcoders] Web service - Bug or by design?

2006-06-26 Thread Daniel Tuppeny

I've tracked down the problem. In the returned SOAP, I
have:

anyType xsi:type="MyEvent"

 StartDate2006-06-26T15:56:11.5841401+01:00/StartDate
/anyType

And in the
WSDL, it says MyEvent's StartDate is a date. However, I'm assuming Flex is
ignoring the xsi:type party, and just treating it as an object (and every
property, therefore asa string).

Is this
correct behaviour, or should Flex be reading the type
sepcified?

flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: RE: [flexcoders] "Type Coercion

I think this is definately a bug. Attached is a screenshot
showing my dates that are strings, and the relevant part of the WSDL (all items
with string dates are of one of the types included there). The dates at the top
level are fine, but those deeper down have just been changed to
strings.

I'll keep trying to reproduce it in a small sample I can
post, but if anyone has any ideas, they'd be most
welcome.

I tried to recreate this with a simple example, and it
didn't happen. I think the dates might be being changed to strings when passed
into my component, like this:

mx:Script![CDATA[[Bindable]public
var
dataProvider:Object;[Bindable]public
var
displayType:String;]]/mx:Scriptmx:TitleWindow
title="Timeline" width="100%"
height="100%"link:TimelineBox
dataProvider="{dataProvider}" width="100%" displayType="{displayType}"
//mx:TitleWindow

I'm in the process of creating a simple version of that too
:-(

flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: [flexcoders] "Type Coercion

More date madness.Some of the dates
from our web services come out as dates in Flex. However, now I'm returning a
whole tree of objects, I'm having issues. The type in question is defined in the
WSDL as this:s:complexType name="Event" s:complexContent
mixed="false" s:extension
base="tns:Item"
s:sequence
s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="StartDate" type="s:dateTime"
/

[flexcoders] Flex, ActionScript and the Slide class

2006-06-26 Thread Chris Simeone
Hi,

I hope someone can help me solve a problem...

I'm using the flex SwfLoader to load a flash side presentation as
follows...
mx:SWFLoader id=ss_slides source=ss_slides.swf width=320
height=240/

I would like to access the flash Slide Class using flex so I can
make the following call...
Slide.gotoNextSlide();

Anyone know how I can do that? Would it be through the SwfLoader
Object? Is there another way?

F.Y.I. Below is a snippet about the Slide Class from Flash 8 help...

Thanks,
Chris S.

===
Using the Slide class (Flash Professional only)
===
You use the methods and properties of the Slide class to control slide
presentations you create using the Screen Outline pane for a Flash
Slide Presentation, to get information about a slide presentation (for
example, to determine the number of child slides contained by parent
slide), or to navigate between slides in a slide presentation (for
example, to create Next slide and Previous slide buttons).

You can also use the built-in behaviors that are available in the
Behaviors panel to control slide presentations. For more information,
see Adding controls to screens using behaviors (Flash Professional
only) in Using Flash.

[flexcoders] Date constructor doesn't understand SOAP date format?

2006-06-26 Thread Daniel Tuppeny
As a workaround for the problem I posted earlier, I've just wrapped my
use of Dates in new Date(x), but I've found that if you pass it
something like:

2006-06-26T15:58:57.7727474+01:00

It silently doesn't work (if you wrap String() around it to alert it, it
gives Invalid Date). This is the format .NET's DateTimes are
serialised for web services. Is this not supported? It works when things
are typed in web services, so Flex/FP definitely knows how to parse it.
Do I need to re-invent that? :(

Thanks,

Danny

RE: [flexcoders] Using JMS Adapter: 'javax.naming.NamingException unknown protocol : joram.

2006-06-26 Thread Cathy Reilly
Here's my advice on troubleshooting the issue.

In flex-enterprise-services.xml (may be called services-config.xml
depending on which prerelease you're using), enable logging and the
debug level and check your server console for errors.

Another thing that might be helpful is ensure that you can reach the
destinations via jndi. You can do this by using a jsp page. If the page
runs without stack traces, then you know that your jndi and jms factory
and destination are configured correctly. Be sure to update
flex-message-service.xml with those jndi names. If you have troubles
running the jsp page, the destinations are not configured correctly and
you should check your application server documentation for details.

jndiTest.jsp

%
Properties p = new Properties();
// as configured in your destination's initial-context-environment in
flex-message-service.xml
p.setProperty(java.naming.factory.initial,fr.dyade.aaa.jndi2.client.N
amingContextFactory);
p.setProperty(com.sonicsw.jndi.mfcontext.domain,Domain1);
p.setProperty(java.naming.provider.url,joram://localhost:16010);
p.setProperty(java.naming.security.principal,anonymous);
p.setProperty(java.naming.security.credentials,anonymous);

Context ctx = new InitialContext(p);
ctx.lookup(TCF); // this maps to connection-factory on the destination
in flex-message-service.xml
ctx.lookup(sampleTopic); // this maps to destination-jndi-name on the
destination in flex-message-service.xml
%

/* If you get an exception running with the above try, generally
application servers make resource available to the application at
java:comp/env/resource-name. However, additional configuration may be
required so check your application server documentation.

ctx.lookup(java:comp/env/TCF);
ctx.lookup(java:comp/env/sampleTopic);

Re: [flexcoders] Can Flex record audio locally?

2006-06-26 Thread John C. Bland II

I don't recall anything. What they can do is look into Rebus by MDM. It is in beta/testing right now. This is if they are bent on using Flex for the UI. They could do it all with .Net but Flex would most likely provide the front-end and Flash Player the install base they'd like.
http://www.mdmforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16153hl=rebusWe built a sound recording app using Flash 8 and Zinc

Rohan,

We are working on similar functionality here at Cynergy Systems.
You will need to communicate with your applet using _javascript_.
Have the flex app call a js function that communicates with the
applet, and vice versa. You may want to look into the Flex-AJAX bridge at
labs.adobe.com to see how this can be done.

The Flex file upload components are used to upload physical files
from the file system to your server. Look at the FileReference class

If there is no physical file, you will need to create a method that
allows you to send the image data to the server. This could be done using
a servlet to open a socket between your applet and your server and send the image
data across the socket (assuming you are using a java backend).

Subject: [flexcoders] JTwain and
Flex

Hi

I am using JTwain
to read a scanned image from the Client UI. For this, I have written an
applet which will detect the source attached to the client's machine, scan the
image and show it on the user's browser. Then, by using Applet-Servlet
communication, I need to store this image in the server's file system.

Though this has been possible to achieve, I need to keep
my UI as Flex. So, I need to call the applet from inside my Flex UI and render
the image on the browser. Also I need to use the file upload functionality to
upload this image to the server.

Has anyone worked on a similar engagement? How can I use
the File-Upload feature to upload the image(java.awt.image object) to the
server from my Flex UI ?

Inputs please.

`Rohan

[flexcoders] Using validators that call a service

2006-06-26 Thread Tom Chiverton
Imagine I have a form with a number of fields on.
As part of the pre-submit validation, I want to parcel some of them up and ask
a server-side object 'is this combination valid'.

Trouble is, firing off the service call from the validator method is easy
enough, but the onResult that then gets called can't return a
ValidationResult, because it's asynchronous, and the doValidate() method will
already have returned.

*So* - any bright ideas ?

Flex2 with Cairngorm, btw.

I just tested this out (to see how bad it was!), and my web service
returned:

dateTime
xmlns=http://tempuri.org/;2006-06-26T10:38:54.6541786+01:00/dateTime

Which includes timezone info. When I call ToString() on the flash date, it
returns exactly the same (10:38+1:00). Is this just an issue with .NET 1.1?
We're using 2.0.

I've read through that thread, and this hardly seems like acceptable
behaviour to me.

We're sending dates from a .NET web service too, and we don't care about the
time. We're plotting them on a calendar. We can't afford to have dates sent
as one thing, and then rolled back to the previous day because the client
machine is in a different timezone. There *needs* to be a way to turn this
off. If my web service says an event occurs on the 1st June, I want Flex to
give me the 1st June.

What's the point in Flex translating it, and then me having to translate it
back (and remember to do this *everywhere*)?

Yes this is correct. I recently had a long thread about this. What I was
told by Adobe is that If a web service defined the element-type in WSDL as
`dateTime' and sends a value that does not include a time zone component
Flex has to assume that this is UTC time and will automatically adjust the
Date value to your local time zone.

You can read my previous thread, including a post by Peter Farland
(Adobe) that this behavior is by design, and my workaround at:

 If so than you can never use a date type in your webservice cause
then you
 miss timezone information.

[flexcoders] Repost of bug issue over weekend

2006-06-26 Thread hank williams

I posted this over the weekend, but I am sure most people, including adobe, did not see it.I saw that someone else had exactly the same problem in another thread and initially responded to that thread. The discussion about that bug quickly devolved into a critique of the persons programming style, and unless I missed something didnt resolve the issue of there being a bug.
I may be doing something wrong but I dont think so. My immediate issue is to find a work around. Since this is a really basic thing I would imagine that, if it is not a known issue (which is hard to imagine) that it will get some attention.
Below describes the problem, along with an mxml code example.If you take the below text, drop it into an app, You should see four
hello items in the list. If you move your mouse over the items,
you should see that only the last item in the list of 4 hellos
highlights, no matter where the mouse is. (at least hopefully you will
see it... if not that would be*really* wierd)
?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?mx:Canvas xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml initialize=initList()
 mx:Script  ![CDATA[   import mx.collections.ArrayCollection;   [Bindable]   private var selectedChannels:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection();

[flexcoders] Re: Can Flex 1.5 coexist on the same machine with 2.0?

2006-06-26 Thread Roscoe P Coltrane
I want to install the beta, then make a copy of the production app,
then compile it to see what all is gonna have to be re-written. If I

[flexcoders] ExternalInterface + JavaScript : import

2006-06-26 Thread tinywhistles

Hi
I am trying to invoke _javascript_ functions(stored in a .JS file) from my MXML document. I am using flash.external.ExternalInterface to do the same.
But am unable to import the JS file. Could someone please tell how to import an external JS file into MXML. Pls note : I am not using an HTML wrapper in this case. There is a pure .MXML file and a .JS file to work with.
ThanksRohan

AFAIK, with Flex 2 you can only transfer data and not video/audio through RTMP. If you want other capabilities like streaming video/audio, you still need FMS2...it's normal because in other way FMS2 would not have too much sense if Flex 2 could do anything ;)

Hi all:
Drupal is looking to create a project that will allow users to record
audio locally and then upload that audio to the server. Does Flex allow
developers to record audio to shared object and store it locally?

I think the answer to this is no and that developers need Flash Media
Server to record video and audio, but I just want to make sure.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: coloring an entire cell in a DataGrid?

2006-06-26 Thread Joan Tan

The color style of Text only
affects the text and the not the background. Text doesnt actually have a
background color so you must create an itemRenderer with a backgroundColor and
then set it. This example was posted on another flexcoders thread entitled datagrid.
This itemRenderer will turn the background of a row to red if the value of the
column myColumnName in that row is over 50.

package {

 import mx.controls.Label;

 import
mx.controls.dataGridClasses.*;

 import mx.controls.DataGrid;

 import flash.display.Graphics;

 import mx.styles.StyleManager;

[Style(name=backgroundColor, type=uint,
format=Color, inherit=no)]

 public class
BackgroundComp extends Label {

 override
protected function updateDisplayList(unscaledWidth:Number,

 unscaledHeight:Number):void

 {

super.updateDisplayList(unscaledWidth, unscaledHeight);

 var
g:Graphics = graphics;

g.clear();

var grid1:DataGrid = DataGrid(DataGridListData(listData).owner);

if (grid1.isItemSelected(data) || grid1.isItemHighlighted(data))

return;

if (data.myColumnName  50)

{

g.beginFill(0xFF);

g.drawRect(0, 0, unscaledWidth, unscaledHeight);

g.endFill();

  }

 }

 }

[flexcoders] Re: Repost of bug issue over weekend

2006-06-26 Thread ben.clinkinbeard
I don't think this is a bug as I am not sure how it could work any
differently. You are repeatedly adding the same item (the string
hello) to the list so it has no way to differentiate between them
and uses the newest instance for the rollOver and rollOut actions. If
you want to display the same string multiple times I think you will
need to fill your ArrayCollection with objects and access a property
via a labelFunction.

Yeah it makes sense, that is what you should have said.

As far as you being worried about others making YOU look bad, check
back to what Tim Hoff said about that issue, I would write the same
thing verbatim.

Besides, web sites, the way users are conditioned by the next
generation of web application(which are web sites)

from a command line to a Windows UI was to much to handle but it
worked. People like motion. There is a good article on Adobe where a

you to define a usable way to give the mind what it loves anyway.

[flexcoders] F2: Cascading states

2006-06-26 Thread Darin Kohles
I'm trying to cascade states (mxml format) in a top down fashion. At
each level children are being added, and I need to wait for this to
happen before trying to effect their states. What is the best event
model to approach this? I'm thinking of using the creationComplete
event on the child, that would test its parents state, to determine
which of several states it should choose from. My first approach had
been to try the ChildExistenceChangedEvent.CHILD_ADD on the parent to
monitor for the creation of it's children, but to no avail.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

My point is that Flex is a developer tool, and while some developers are pretty design savvy, most do not fall into that category so my fear is that if developers start using Flex to build sites, we'll be seeing a lot of sites springing up with lots of neat functionality with blurs and fades and slides and stuff, but zero usability and no quality user experience. Does that make more sense?
Well, interestingly, I dont think graphic designers have any kind of corner on usability. There are three disciplines involved here, programming, interface design, and graphic design. Some, though few people are good at all three. I think the biggest crime though is the assumption that good graphic designers have some inherent understanding of human interaction. Of course I presume here when you say designer you mean graphic designer which is usually what people mean. But great human interface designers (eg bruce tognazini Jacob Nielsen) dont (perhaps rarely do) have any facility with graphic design and art in my experience. I for one am on the opposite end of the spectrum being decent in human interface and coding, but unable to make decent artwork.
My point. Let a million flowers bloom. The tools are what they are. Making things easier will spawn lots of good stuff and lots of bad stuff. And so it goes.RegardsHank

[flexcoders] possible bug in pieSeries custom wedge renderers

2006-06-26 Thread Pan Troglodytes

Sorry for reposting, but it's been over a week with not response and I'm at a loss to figure this out.I created a custom pie wedge renderer and applied it to a chart. The problem is when I switch from that renderer to another custom renderer (or the default one). The wedges that were previously plotted no longer plot correctly. I have an example here:
http://three.fsphost.com/flex2/PieCategory/PieCategoryApp.html
(may be slow to load but just give it time)When you click between the radio buttons, it changes the datasource and renderer like so:
 public var monthRenderer:ClassFactory = new ClassFactory(MonthRenderer);
 public var seasonRenderer:ClassFactory = new ClassFactory(SeasonRenderer);

  public function dataChange(e:Event):void {

 if (rg.selectedValue == Months) { switchChart.setStyle

(itemRenderer, monthRenderer); switchChart.dataProvider = dataSet;

 } else {

 switchChart.setStyle(itemRenderer, seasonRenderer);

 switchChart.dataProvider = dataSet2; }

 }The problem is that something sticks in the first renderer and isn't
cleared out when you select the second one. Notice that the only
colored slices are the ones after the three slices in the original
array.
Any ideas on why that is? Is it a bug in the pieSeries code, or is there something I'm missing in my code? I based it off of Ely's stoplight renderer example.-- Jason

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Repost of bug issue over weekend

2006-06-26 Thread hank williams

Thanks ben. Yes it does help. It is, from my perpsective, even now understanding what it seems to do, be an unexpected result. Perhaps it should generate an error, or not allow you to have an arrayCollection of strings instead of objects, since it is always possible for a list to have multiple matching strings. IMHO it should either do the right thing, or generate an error, not create some anomalous user interface effect with certain data sets. Because this will work right with one set of data, and not right with another data set, I would consider it a bug, though not of the kind I initially thought.

 I may be doing something wrong but I dont think so. My immediateissue is to find a work around. Since this is a really basic thing I wouldimagine that, if it is not a known issue (which is hard to imagine) that it will

Well, it helped when I figured out I could do things
like date.date += 12 and it would automatically correct for rolling over
months/years. But at the very least, there needs to be a built-in
daysBetween function. Yes, yes, I know you can do the getTime()
arithmetic. But every time you have to fall back to that, it feels kludgy.
If I were redesigning it, it wold at least ook like
this:dayOfWeek - what used to be called dayday - day in month (used
to be called date)month - 1 based like day (what used to be called date)
ishour/minute/second/millisecond - singular (if hour is plural, why not
months?)year - why fullYear? I mean, c'mon, do people really expect
something called year to be two digits or what?daysBetween(laterDate:date)
- laterDate minus this in days But, alas, it's too late. There's
no way they'll make the change at this late day.I mean

[flexcoders] yField in specific Series types

2006-06-26 Thread Brendan Meutzner

Hi,Came across a bit of an annoyance this morning...I've got a dual-axis chart which displays a LineSeries and a ColumnSeries. I'd like to use the same dataTipFunction for both Series. However, if I try to access the yField inside the function for the particular series, I need to cast the type. Because I'm using two different Series types, this isn't going to fly, but if I relegate to the parent Series class, it doesn't contain the yField property and I get a compile time error. Ideas?
Here's the snippet:returnString += NumberFormatters.thousandsSeperated.format(event.hitData.item[Series(event.hitData.element).yField]) + \n; ^

RE: [flexcoders] Re: yField in specific Series types

2006-06-26 Thread Ely Greenfield

Hi Brendan. When building an OO framework, there's an
endless set of decisions one has to make in trading off between accurately
representing commonality and 'is a' relationships, and keeping things
simple. We considered pushing some of the more common fields of the

[flexcoders] ComboBase value? Possible bug

2006-06-26 Thread Scott Romer

Hi all - I'm trying to work around an issue that I am having with a custom combo-box. It seems that it is setting the value to empty string (i.e. ""), when it should be null, which is then seen as a difference in the dataGrid itemEditEnd event, and so it tries to cast the "" String to the class type used for display in the ComboBox.It looks like it comes down to this function in ComboBase. value in this case is "", where as it is initialized as null. I'm trying to find out where value gets set to "", but it looks like it must be in the Sprite code, because I can't seem to find any other setters. Does this code make sense? Should it be setting the _selectedItem to 'data' rather than to 'value'... private function setSelectedItem(data:Object, clearFirst:Boolean = true):void { //2 code paths: one for before collection, one after if (!collection || collection.length == 0) { _selectedItem = value; selectedItemChanged = true; invalidateDisplayList(); return; } ... }Thanks much for any help.-Scott

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Shouldn't we use Flex to built website

2006-06-26 Thread Uday M. Shankar

I agree with hank. Usability and
User experience are often directly related to colors and fonts. I think User
Interface is a different ball game all together. I have heard many developers debating
over this their point what makes u think developers cant create
sexy user friendly UIs. They can. For that matter I know some
designers who are great developers too. But the point is FOCUS. In any work
which involves technical input and creative input, it would be best if people
focus on different areas to finally make one really productive output.. In
my experience, when a developer is given the task of making the UI usable, they
usually translate it directly to slick effects and jazzy colors. User
experience is much beyond that. The industry is just waking up to that factor.
But still theres a long way to go for usability and user experience to
be given its due importance.

As hank buckets it, programming, usability
and design should be treated separately. In fact I would like to add
information architecture to the list as well. Anyway, I guess we are straying
away hereJ. I talk too much dont i? ;)

referring to the poorly done ones where flash users were doing things merely
because they now could, not because it was good design. I'm not saying anyone
here falls into this category, but typically it was done by people who were
solely developers and didn't have an ounce of design sense in their body, from
my observations. My point is that Flex is a developer tool, and while some
developers are pretty design savvy, most do not fall into that category so my
fear is that if developers start using Flex to build sites, we'll be seeing a
lot of sites springing up with lots of neat functionality with
blurs and fades and slides and stuff, but zero usability and no quality user
experience. Does that make more sense?

Well, interestingly, I dont think graphic designers have any kind
of corner on usability. There are three disciplines involved here, programming,
interface design, and graphic design. Some, though few people are good at all
three. I think the biggest crime though is the assumption that good graphic
designers have some inherent understanding of human interaction. Of course I
presume here when you say designer you mean graphic designer which is usually
what people mean. But great human interface designers (eg bruce tognazini Jacob
Nielsen) dont (perhaps rarely do) have any facility with graphic design and art
in my experience. I for one am on the opposite end of the spectrum being decent
in human interface and coding, but unable to make decent artwork.

My point. Let a million flowers bloom. The tools are what they are. Making
things easier will spawn lots of good stuff and lots of bad stuff. And so it
goes.

[flexcoders] Why can I pass a string but not a date?

2006-06-26 Thread Ian Skinner
I have this custom component that at the moment just repeats the passed in
value. It works if I pass in a string, but if I pass the date I actually want
it does not work. I can not figure out why.

dayFormat2 custom component.
mx:Script
  ![CDATA[
//Define public variables
public var dayData:String;
  ]]
/mx:Script

mx:DateFormatter id=dayNum formatString=DD /
mx:Label text={dayData} /

---

This Works.
ns1:dayFormat2 dayData=George /

This does not work.
ns1:dayFormat2 dayData={DayNum.format(dayCells.currentItem.date)} /

And neither does this. Of course for this version I change the dayData type to
date in the custom component.
ns1:dayFormat2 dayData={dayCells.currentItem.date} /

Just to make sure that the date exists as I expect. If I replace the
dayFormat2 custom comment with a label, I get the dates just fine.
mx:Label text={DayNum.format(dayCells.currentItem.date)} /

[flexcoders] RE: Newbie layout help.

2006-06-26 Thread Ian Skinner
Ok, I have a custom control created to handle the formatting inside each of my

That is what the repeater current item will pass in if it is looping over an

I have this working to the point that I am creating a grid of 7 columns and the
appropriate number of rows to display all records returned from the
remoteObject.

As one might guess this will be an event calendar type display. Now I just
need to figure out how I use the dayFormat.mxml file I created when I started
with the Phones example and use it for the content of the GridItem cells
instead of the simple label I have in there now. Or do I just copy that entire
file's code into the main.mxml file fragment I've included here?

mx:Grid width=100% backgroundColor=yellow
  mx:Repeater id=weekRows dataProvider={weeksAry}
mx:GridRow width=100%
  mx:Repeater
  id=dayCells
  dataProvider={days}
  startingIndex={weekRows.currentItem}
  count=7
mx:GridItem width=14% backgroundColor=blue
  mx:Label text={Day.format(dayCells.currentItem.date)} /
/mx:GridItem
  /mx:Repeater
/mx:GridRow
  /mx:Repeater
/mx:Grid

I'd stick with using VOs over records, gives you that nice OO warm fuzzy
feeling. Columns fixed at 7, it seems. So return a array of objects that are
the parents that have the data for the grid. Note that these have 7 instance
variables that will populate your grid columns. Each of these can have a array
of other objects for your tile list.

 appropriate. Each of these objects will contain a record set or
 another array of objects (I have not decided yet) that I will then
 want to pass to a tilelist inside each grid cell.

 I can not see how to even start this kind of display. Any help would

[flexcoders] Hbox 100% width of its GridItem parent

2006-06-26 Thread Ian Skinner
Should this not create a HBox control the entire width of the GridItem it is
inside? Even if the HBox is a custom control mxml called from inside the
GridItem on the main mxml file?

mx:HBox backgroundColor=blue width=100% horizontalAlign=right

It does not, it only creates a HBox that is just as wide as its content.

Flex 2.0 is quite different from AS 1.5.
This is an excellent book for those writing Flex 1.5 applications, but I
wouldn't buy it to learn how to write a Flex 2.0 application.

Hi!

As a newcomer to Flex, I was wondering if it is wise to buy the book
Developing Rich Clients with Macromedia Flex? AFAIK this book was
made for flex 1.0 to 1.5, while the most up to date version of Flex is
2.0. Are these versions of Flex so much different?

RE: [flexcoders] converting from screen display to print ready PDF

2006-06-26 Thread Gordon Smith

 I can't figure out a smart way to convert the pixel coords over to
inch/mm/pt measurements

I think typical screen resolutions are 72, 96, and 108 pixels/inch. I
don't think you can get the number for your monitor through a Flash/Flex API.
But you can always measure your screen with a ruler. For example, if your
screen is 1024x768 and the image is 14 inches wide, then there are 1024/14 = 73
pixels per inch.

Flex community.

Now I'm gonna pose my question just to see if anyone can point me in
the right direction. I have a flex application that has a few image
elements drawn within a panel. I am then passing the X and Y coords
of those elements to a pdf generator and I'd like to create a hires
PDF that looks just like the view on the panel but with all hires

convert the pixel coords over to inch/mm/pt measurements needed by my

Has anyone had to do hi-res prints via PDF before? Is there a better
way for me to do this than to try and generate a PDF on the fly?
Thanks for any help.

Thank you, this clears some things up. :)

I was actually allocating memory up to 100mb and then seeing if it's
collected by letting it sit there with no activity, and watching the process
memory usage (couldn't think of another way).

You can later remove a component from a container using the removeChild()
method. If there are no references to the component, it is eventually
deleted from memory by the garbage collection mechanism of Flash Player.

The above taken from the doc's, lead me to believe that there was a garbage
collection process every (x)min's. If the player only does this when it
needs to get back memory, then that would explain why I did not see it
collected.

What lead me to the question was the following scenario:

I have a single component based on the viewstack for the views, this
component listens for event state changes in the program to load new views,
the events it gets come from another class (think observer pattern). So with
this I can load multiple copies of a view with different data(this is where
I seen a problem). Even though a view was removed from the viewstack it
still received data change events (which it listens to in order to see if it
needs to load new data (think chain of responsibility here) where each view
gets the event and decides if the data is destined for it (the data it self
is just a guid that I use to reference the xml data needed to be loaded).

The scenario may seem weird, but no object knows what data is being accessed
except the view that is responsible for displaying it.

If the view was really unloaded then the event should not get through. So
now I remove a view, and in the removed view I get ride of the listeners in
the unload event, clean up any child objects/classes/data providers etc..

So the view dataprovider modelloader etc..
 controller  etc..

>From what I understand from your answer is that if the view is removed, and
I clean up the listeners and local references i.e. (set dataprovider
and
controller to null)

view  dataprovider
 controller

Then I should be alright. Is this correct?

My original thinking was that if it's removed to the garbage collection how
is it that it's still getting the events? I was thinking that this was a
protected space. I can't get the instance back from the garbage collection,
however the instance is still very much alive and kicking.

Is this making sense? Are these correct assumptions?

Thank you for your help.

Jason

 it does not seem to be collected

What are you doing that you think should cause it to be collected? Do you
keep allocating memory indefinitely? An object may never get garbage
collected unless the Player decides it needs the memory.

 Should one have to remove all objects created through the
 or just on the child being removed?

I'm not really following your texavery toto titi example
because you
didn't explain which one you're removing. Let's suppose you're removing toto
as a child of texavery. If you're not keeping any references to toto or
titi, then both become eligible for garbage collection; the fact that toto
holds a reference to its child titi doesn't matter, because the two of them
are isolated from all other objects.

 Is there a way to force the garbage collection clean up,
 or destroy an object completely?

There are no APIs for controlling garbage collection. Once there are no
references to an object, it becomes eligible for garbage collection. It
doesn't mean that it actually gets garbage
