RE: [flexcoders] Flex 4.5: Flex in 5 Days

So did I.

I just wanted to try it out.

It may have helped that Ive been using flex for
years but Im sure I just followed the whole course
and can't remember do any work-rounds or anything
like that.

I thought, for a free training set is was actually
really good. I don't really know of anything any
better video wise without actually paying for a
Lynda one or something like that. It covered the
basics in enough details to defiantly get you well
started

a product crashes so often. I assume it was all

Does anyone know of less buggy tutorials? They
can't be "YouTube" based as our firewall blocks

upgrade to 4.5, but even that is closer than 3.5.

RE: [flexcoders] Why is CSS replaced by skins in Flex 4.x?

2011-09-02 Thread Glenn Williams
You can. Just build skins that allow you set css styles from cc on them.

I for one don't want the out of the box skins to be full of css stuff. Just
makes the components needlessly large and messy.

Keep it simple and clean and if you need more css then build skins that
allow you to use css

I know it's a change from what we're used to but I think it actually works
much better

I understand the advantages of skins, they are working pretty well for me.
But what disappoints me is the inability to add some padding on an element,
or change the height of a button, via CSS.

It seems ridiculous to me to create entire skin files just to change some
small aspects of a certain element.

Skins are great, but couldn't we have skins AND CSS? Why are many CSS
properties missing on elements? It would make my code so much more
lightweight.

Hi and welcome. You're going to enjoy flex Im sure. It's a great framework
and I think fun to work in.

Anyway books.

Flex 4 Bible, nice big book that covers lots and a good place to start

I liked the flex 3cookbook so assume flex 4 one will be a winner also, but
it's not available in uk yet so haven't read it

One of my favourites is Enterprise Development with Flex, O'Reilly though
it's not an introductory book

Those 3 will get you up to speed

Actually the adobe manuals and help are really very good.

Lots of online stuff on adobe.tv

Also get onto adobe dev. website, loads on there.

Read the specs on the adobe open source confluence

Hope that helps, and feel free to drop me a message off forum if there's
anything I can help you with while you get set-up and started

Hi all,

Just joined this group/list and am getting up to speed with Flex 4 + AIR.
I'm coming from many years working with Director/Lingo, along with a fair
amount of experience with AS3 + C++. I like Flex so far but am still
figuring out working methods that are flexible and make logical sense to
me. I'm using Flash Builder trial for now.

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good Flex book that is on the
level of Colin Moock's "Essential Actionscript 3"? In other words,
something that isn't primarily project building tutorial-based but instead
presents in-depth discussion of components and classes, the various
frameworks (PureMVC, etc.) why choose one approach over another, best
practices, etc. I ask because the thing that is hardest to get my head
around is more architectural than syntax etc.

Also, do most people use some form of code behind rather than loading code
into CDATA script blocks?

thanks for any pointers,

OK, so I understand that Flex web service calls are asynchronous, and I
understand the many cases where this makes sense since you don't have
to hold up the UI experience while waiting for a web service or remote
procedure to return a result.

However, I keep running into instances where this makes my life hell.
One example is the submission of an order on a Flex site I have.
Because of the way the order is handled, it is split into multiple
(smaller) orders and then each order is submitted/saved via a web
service call. This means that one order could have 10+ web service
calls. I have a "Print Receipt" button which then uses the saved order
data to produce a PDF receipt. The problem is, if a user clicks "Print
Receipt" before all the save order web services have finished, then
they only get a partial receipt. There's also not an easy way to
determine if all the web service calls are finished, so I can't
disable/enable the button based on that.

Is there any easy way to implement synchronous web service calls in
Flex? Man, if I had the option of specifying with a property whether
or not a web service should be synchronous or asynchronous, it would
make my life *so* much easier!

Hi Jim,

Yes there are 3 dlls included (simply added to the air project). The
communication is via localconnection, the app checks if it can connect and
if the dlls are there the app will get access automagically to the api
provided (the "api" is specially written native COM libraries).
I am going to post part2 with more details later.

Understandably Adobe is feeling rather conservative about this sort of
thing. The last thing we as developers would want is an abuse of the AIR
runtime which sullies its reputation. So we're getting a certain sandbox to
play in.

However, opening a document file such as a word doc, pdf or excel
spreadsheet is a normal every day activity. The OS and the user already have
responsibility to ensure that they are not accessing malicious content. IMO,
letting AIR have a somewhat larger sandbox by passing to the OS a request to
open files would be a huge step forward and make the user experience
significantly better.

For example, the AIR application I just built downloads data entitlements to
a user's machine. Once downloaded, the user needs to navigate to that
directory using the OS to open the files. It would be nice to not requre all
that additional work on the part of the user.

No, not wierd: Adobe prices in the UK are between 60 and 120% heigher that in
the US :

For a plain Flash licence, I priced it: It would cost me the same to:

- Fly to NY from London

- Pay 2 nights in a NY hotel

- Buy Flash from Office Depot or similar

Than to buy from the Adobe.co.uk online store in the UK

It's simple: $450 becomes £450 or €450 convieniently forgetting that 1 $US =
1.6 Euros, or that the UK version is not even translated into "UK English"
("color" is still "color" and not "colour").

In French (but tables are universal): Prices in the US, France and UK with the
product markup in percent and constant euros with the US being the base price:
http://www.danielpage.com/archives/32#more-32 (Royaume uni = United kingdom).

RE: [flexcoders] MVC - Philosophical question

2008-04-15 Thread Glenn Williams
I'm not so sure really.

I do have some logic in the model.

when I build URLS, I build them in the delegate before making the service
call.

as building URLs is service specific (i.e. the service could change, and do
we really want the model to know about that?). on the other hand I suppose
it depends really. it's all a matter a taste at the end of the day

I tend to keep all Business logic away from the model and use commands and
delegates. it's the delegates that do data transformation and I'd count
building a URL with its parameters as data transformation. kind of like
parsing data into a request so really you should think of it as part of the
service call

but as I said - it's just best to do what works for you.

I'm sure everyone that answers will have a different view on this

I'd put it in the model.

The Controller is just supposed to facilitate communication between
the View and the Model. Building a URL (or retrieving it from a

I've got a live Flex 3 site that uses SOAP web services. I've had a
number of users over the weekend who updated to Flash Player 9.0.124.0
and now they can't get past the login screen -- it's like the login web
service is not being called at all.

The site works fine with version 9.0.115.0 (and older versions of Flash
Player 9).

Was there some type of change in 9.0.124.0 that would cause this type
of issue?

This thread seems to be the only help out there for UITextField and
Formatting it via UITextFormat. The Adobe documentation fails to provide a
working example. So I guess I will pose the question here with a very very
simple example. Why is the following code wrong? The text displays but the
font size is not changing.

If the service returned an empty AC, I would verify that the DG has really
been assigned that empty AC. Read back the dataProvider on the DG and see
what its length is. You can also try to manually reset the DG to an empty
AC and see if it refreshes that way.

Hi Glenn,

Have you looked at QuickAddress?

Just had a quick look on their website, looks like they have software
targeted at those wanting to use web technologies. It's not a public
interface though, you need to install their software on your own
servers.

http://www.qas.co.uk/products/capture-name-and-address-data/pro-web.htm

Worth a look if this is a possible route for you rather than using a
public service.

One thing to be wary of - there are quite strict licensing requirements for
the data. I once worked on project using postcode data and the licence did
not allow public use of the data, just within the organisation. For such a
simple thing it's a bit of a minefield and potentially expensive.

course stuff like that is pointless to print or have hardcopy, but the PDFS

[flexcoders] Praise for the Flex 3 Documentation

2008-03-02 Thread Glenn Williams
Just wanted to say this.

Having bought and read many Flex & actionScript books over the years,
I hadn't really given Adobes documentation much of a look (apart from
the liveDocs that is, which I couldn't live without.). Well, I had a
free afternoon today, so I thought I'd have a read through the new
Flex Builder 3 PDFs.

So, 1000s of pages and a whole day later I've come to the conclusion
that they're amazing. Easily the best 'book' on Flex I've read. So
much so, I'm going to order a printed copy of the documentation set in
the morning.

It's easy to overlook this source of information, and think it's
essential to look at 3rd party books to teach you this product. I'd
just like to say to both new and seasoned users, that Adobes Flex PDF
collection is something not to be ignored.

I often see post's asking 'which is the best book on Flex, I now think
that you can't do better than Adobes own documentation.

Here's a link.

[flexcoders] Re: Custom Compound Components with States and Transform

2008-03-02 Thread Glenn Williams
Ok,

So I worked out what I was doing wrong.

As my custom component was not in fact based on the original Panel
class, but a custom panel (lets call it myPanel, in the name space
'lion'), the custom component being started like this:

http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml";
xmlns:lion="com.tinylion.gariff.view.components.*"
.etc
.etc
.

the states inside the component then were also in the name space
'lion''', like this:

.etc
.etc
.

What I'd forgotten to do is also use this name space for the
transitions, ie:

.etc
.etc
.

So I was not in fact having the original problem, and you as I first
assumed you can in fact use target="{this}" to point to the class that
hold the states you wish to transition

[flexcoders] Custom Compound Components with States and Transform

2008-03-02 Thread Glenn Williams
Custom Compound components with States and Transform:

My question is probably best asked using the standard Log-In example that
seems to be used all over the place.

You have a panel with several components, this panel has states and the
states transform when changed.

Ok, all simple.

Now take that panel, with its forms and buttons and collect it into a
custom component, based on the Panel Class so its self contained.

now, the states, are also taken into the custom component.

all is well.

The problem,

How can I set the transforms 'target' to point to the Component it's inside
of? In other words, say the height of the components was changed using
states, and I wanted to use a resize to transform the height change. well
I'd need the transform to point to the class itself. 'target=this' that kind
of thing.

Well, I've tried:

  target="{this}"

and lots of variations of that kind of thing

No joy.

Has anyone else. used States and transforms inside a custom components.

I'm amazed by the negative views on Adobes Collaborative
<http://blogs.adobe.com/collabmethods/> software. It's truly wonderful
stuff.

I'm not sure if you are aware but they are in the processes of final
development and release of an API called Cocomo
<http://blogs.adobe.com/collabmethods/2007/10/wow_what_a_great_turn_out.html
> .

The API contains all the base class used in building Adobe Biro. This is not
a Biro API, rather a class library for building flex, actionScpit 3
Collaborative applications. It you company didn't like Biro, or connect,
then get the API when it's available and use the base classes and Adobes
Servers to build your own UI. Amazing!

Building this kind of application from the ground up, and not taking
advantage of these tools is beyond reason.

At the moment the private beta is closed (I also just missed out on the
sign-up, but have been following Cocomo's progress with excitement). I for
one will jump on this library as soon as I'm able, I can hardly wait.

[flexcoders] ActionSctipe 3 compiler now Open Source

2008-02-21 Thread Glenn Williams
In the latest nightly build of the Flex SDK is the as3 compiler code!

The ActionScript 3 compiler, asc, is now open-source! Added the source
code for Flex 3's asc.jar, at branches/3.0.x/modules/asc. This code
came from ssh://asteam.macromedia.com/hg/asc-flex3 and is what built
the asc.jar that shipped with SDK 3.0.0.477, plus open-source
copyright changes. It requires Java 1.5 to build and is not integrated
with the build scripts for branched/3.0.x; this branch continues to
have a prebuilt asc.jar in 'lib'.

Having just sat and read the specs document over a cuppa, I'm even
more impressed with the Ribbon controller (fluid user interface). the
document is quit a piece of work. As i guessed in my last post, this
is worth a read just for some of the design ideas it puts across.

[flexcoders] Re: Implementing Office 2007 menus

2008-02-20 Thread Glenn Williams
I have to say, I find the ribbon bar a joy to use.

there was very small adoption time, and I actually now work faster in
office than ever before. This really is (imho) something Microsoft UI
team has got exactly right. It's not just the UI but how passes
selections back to the application (every option, in word for example,
when hovered over is instantly translated onto your document allowing
fast previews before making a selection. wonderful stuff.

Also, it's not just a matter of copying as some have said. We should
always try to take whats best out there and give it our personal
slant. As for licensing, well whats the problem? Yes, I prefer OSource
or open spec products (PDF for example), but not every product
benefits from this kind of use agreement. And at the end of the day it
costs nothing to read the specs and see what can be gained.

I have also thought about creating a take on the Ribbon, simply
because its such an effective UI. More the principal than the exact
implementation is whats important. IMO, if there's a 120 page document
discussing the use and ideology behind this UI then I think everyone
should read it, if nothing else just to get an insight into what is an
effect piece of design. (that goes for all tech documents that we can
gain insight and knowledge from)

hope that didnt sound like a rant, I just think people should keep an
open mind, especially where MS are concerned. It's just to easy to
know them (ok, they are hateful agreed, but must get it right every
now and then)

[flexcoders] memory question - embed assets in class & instantiate

2008-02-16 Thread Glenn Williams
Hi everyone,

I just need to get something straight in my head.

Given code along the following lines:
(pseudo code)

Package
{
 Imports.

public class fooAudio
{

[Embed(source="some.mp3")]
private static var someMP3 : Class;
private static var Sound00 : SoundAsset = new someMP3() as
SoundAsset;

function fooAudio():void
{
}

 other methods etc

}

}

Then inside my assets model which is a singleton I instantiate the class
(this being the only time the class is instantiated)

public var assetSounds : fooAudio = new fooAudio();

What I need to understand for sure is this:

Will the Embedded source.mp3, and the sound classes only be in memory ONCE?

Or is the data copied along into the new object?

I'm just not sure if references are being passed or a second copy of the
data (which in this case is not what I want obviously) is being copied when
the new object is created.

I hope I've made sense with this question.

Thanks

Glenn.

No, the class path is complete (no src)
main mxml in root, views in com.foo.foo.foo.views, renderers in
com.foo.foo.foo.renderers etc. I ended up just assuming that you can't
use a class path in an mxml declaration. i know the class path is fine
because now I#m setting the renderer with AS I use the class path and
its ok. It's not really a problem seeing as I have the functionality I
want it just seems that it sound work the other way.

bear in mind the renderer is an mxml file, not an AS file, just in
case that makes a difference. I know it shouldn't as it's compiled
down to a class anyway. oh well.

thanks.

Looking into the .actionScriptProperties file in the root of my project, I

Also is it ok to have line returns between options, just making them easier
to read?

I just want to make sure that this IS the file used by the compiler, and
changing it by hand won't break anything (assuming I don't add incorrect
values of course)

[flexcoders] Help With Log Out

2008-01-21 Thread Glenn Williams
Hi all.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to fully reset a flex application
programmatically?

My problem is this.

I'm using states to manage my apps logging in/out

But, when a user logs out, then back in again all of the components have
already been initialized during the first log in, so not all
creationComplete Events are being triggered on the users second visit
(without leaving the browser and closing the application)

What i want to know is this.

Is there a way to clear all the objects that are not displayed when on the
LOGGEDOFF State Or can I trigger the application to reset itself (like play
for a flash swf) so that everything is cleared properly?

I only noticed this problem just. After using a PopUpButton and setting the
.popUp=foo property to a menu I create on the creationComplete event of the
PopUpButton. It's all working ok, until the users logs off (and the state is
set to LOGGEDOFF) then logs back in again. I need to be able to reinitialize
all components to their 'first run' values then the user logs back in.

Any ideas?

Hope I'm making sense here.
