[Flexradio] Power SDR 2.35 Unhandled exception with RX2
I recently updated to PowerSDR v2.3.5 from v2.0.16. Everything seems to work well until I active RX2, at which point I get an Overflow error and am given the option to continue or quit. If I continue, the panadaptor display is replaced with a white rectangle with crossed red lines. Below is the result of the Details in the error alert. I am not sure what I should try at this point. Suggestions? Re: [Flexradio] Pauses in cw character transmission
Update: I have downloaded PowerSDR 2.0.16, removed McAfee antivirus, loaded ESET Nod32 antivirus (much kinder in terms of system overhead), and am trying to trim my unneeded Windows 7 services. So far it has made a favorable difference in cw transmission, however my computer is still doing some unnecessary background processing which I need to eliminate. I can send a string of dits and everything sounds great, but then suddenly I hear the hard drive working and I note pauses in the dits. I would love to upgrade to a monster CPU, but for now I intend to use the services of Abroham Neal Software to perform a remote 'tune-up' of my system and see if I can't get it behaving properly. Once again, I must thank everyone who has provided me with very valuable suggestions and insight. Re: [Flexradio] Pauses in cw character transmission
I appreciate all of the good suggestions and this weekend I will try the following: 1. Neal's suggestion: Turn off Windows Search in Windows 7 and modify the Windows Update to do not check all. It does seem as if another process is periodically working and causing a delay in the cw processing. Maybe this will do the trick. 2. Ed's sugggestion: I will try the PowerSDR 2.0.16 upgrade. 3. George, we cw operators must forge forward! I love the Flex5kA receive on cw, but just need to get the cw timing and qsk ironed out and I will be a happy camper! To answer Neal, my virus checker is McAfee AntiVirus Plus. I can somewhat disable it, but suspect that it never truly shuts off all functions. These anti-virus programs are like viruses themselves :) Craig, AE7I ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
[Flexradio] Pauses in cw character transmission
Hello, I am a Flex-5000A user who has never quite become comfortable using it on cw. I am using it with a Dell Dimension E520 running Windows 7. It has 5 GB of RAM. I have tried using an external keyer (LogiKit CMOS-4) and recently the internal keyer, but have audio pops, glitches and delays which make it challenging to send good cw. It becomes quite distracting during QSO's. I must conclude that it is somehow related to my computer or software and wonder if you could provide guidance. I'm happy to provide much more details about the setup if that will help you out. If most of the problems stem from the computer driving the rig, then I would be open to suggestions for a setup that would be bullet proof for cw. I love the selectivity of the rig, but just get too distracted by the audio pops and delays to feel comfortable using it in the current setup. Suggestions? Re: [Flexradio] Pauses in cw character transmission
Tim, I left out some information on my original post (sent the wrong version of the two I wrote). To test things out I transmitted into a dummy load, 0 watts, and sent a string of dits. Sporadically, and not in a regular pattern, their are pauses. When sending cw, these sporadic pauses throw off my timing. I'm sure that it has something to do with the computer getting busy with other processes, but can't figure it out. It does seem to get much worse if I have my logging program CommCat running. Unfortunately, I really would like to have it up and running. However, even without it running the cw pauses or glitches throw me off. Here is some potentially useful information I neglected to send with my original message: The DPC checker reads 252 usec. The Flex-5000a shows CPU at 27-35% Audio setting buffer 2048 sample 96,000; CW RX buffer 2048; CW TX buffer 2048. Re: [Flexradio] Noise
Wayne, I have had my share of RFI problems and found the ARRL publications quite helpful. I read the book by Marv Loftness, but have heard good things about The ARRL RFI Book as well: http://www.arrl.org/catalog/?category=Interference/DF.http://www.arrl.org/catalog/?category=Interference/DF Have you tried putting a scope on your audio output? If it syncs with 60 Hz, then you likely have power line noise. I used my oscilloscope and VHF/UHF radios with directional antennas to find my source of noise. Finally, I built an ultrasonic power line noise detector to confirm the culprit (in my case, bad power line surge protectors). Good luck on your search! Dudley, Thanks for your tips on using the 'Wave' function for recording and subsequent conversion to MP3 format. I followed your instructions and set the sample rate in PowerSDR Wave to 11025, post-processed receive audio, and pre-processed audio transmit. A 15-second recording of a SSB station resulted in a .wav file size of 1.24MB. I used Wavosaur (freeware) with the VST plug-in called lame_enc.dll (for MP3 conversion) and was able to compress the file to a 236 Kb 128 kbit/s MP3 file that sounded good. I will now start exploring different sample rates and MP3 conversion bit rates to find the best combination for audio quality to file size for my website. Re: [Flexradio] Multiple tones on cw transmit or tune
Follow-up... Today I did further testing and was quite surprised that I no longer had any addtional tones on my cw note and there was no longer any 60-cycle hum in the background of my signal when I listened in AM mode with my Kenwood receiver. What changed? The only change made was to connect my computer to my local network directly rather than go through a wireless Buffalo Air Station. Hmmm... its late now, but perhaps I will go back to my prior setup and see if that was somehow the cause. Anyway, I'm back on the air and having fun! [Flexradio] Multiple tones on cw transmit or tune
Yesterday I worked a local friend on 40-meters cw. He was listening with his K3 and said my signal had a musical quality to it and appeared wide on a spectrum display. Listening closer, he thought that there was a main tone at 1500 and additional tones at 300 and 100 Hz (I'm not sure how he was measuring this). Today I transmitted into a dummy load on 20 meters while listening with a Kenwood TS-850 and indeed there sounds like there is the main tone and at least one additional low frequency tone (at much lower strength) being transmitted. Since I don't have a panadapter display on the Kenwood, I can't comment on the signal width. I was using PowerSDR svn 1738. I reverted back to the currently approved version of PowerSDR v1.10.3 and found the same problem. I am keying the Flex-5000a via the jack on the back using a LogiKit CMOS-4 Keyer. I am using firmware version 0.1.1.3. What could be causing this and how can I correct/diagnose the problem? Thanks, Craig, AE7I -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [Flexradio] Loss of receive with preserved transmit
On a few occasions, while operating cw, I have noted that the receiver suddenly goes quiet while the transmitter continues to work fine. It happened today. I pushed Stop and Start on PowerSDR without effect. I then shutdown PowerSDR and power cycled the Flex-5000a. When I restarted PowerSDR, the receiver was back and I was able to complete my QSO with Bert, W5ZR. He told me that when I reported my receiver as non-functioning, the transmitted signal was fine (which was also evident by watching my inline Palstar directional RF wattmeter). I have screen shots on my website which might help out: http://ae7i.com/Flex-5000a.html. When I lost receiver, the Panadapter baseline fell below the current window threshold with a few spikes present, but I couldn't hear any signals and switching the antenna in/out didn't change the receiver's minimal baseline noise. [Flexradio] Version number versus SVN
I have a Flex-5000A and am using what I believe to be the latest versions of the software: F5K Firewire Driver 3.0.0.70 F5K Firmware 0.1.1.2 PowerSDR 1.10.3 When I run Power SDR 1.10.3 I see FlexRadio Systems PowerSDR Beta v1.10.3 SVN:1606 at the top. While reading through the comments on this list, I often see a reference to various SVN's. In one recent post, there is mention of separate TX and RX buffer settings, which I don't see with my version. On the website, they list the latest versions which correspond to what I have downloaded, but the SVN is not mentioned. Does each PowerSDR version have one corresponding SVN, or can there be many SVN's per particular PowerSDR version. Any further information on the version schemes would be appreciated. [Flexradio] CW beep on 6 meters
I was trying 6 meters for the first time today. No problem on SSB. However, with my usual cw settings I could hear a single short beep in the receiver after sending a single letter and pausing or sending a few characters and stopping. Here is what I discovered by adjusting QSK settings and looking at the monitor: -- TX frequency was 50.070 -- Beep was visible on the panadapter display at 50.056 with strength of -64 dBm. -- It wasn't audible (or visible) when the QSK delay was increased. The threshold where it was again heard was anything below a QSK delay of 86 ms. Has anyone else noticed this? Suggestions? Thanks, Craig, AE7I -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [Flexradio] Flex-5000 receiver stops while transmitter functions
Several times this evening I have had the receiver suddenly stop working while the transmitter continues to function. I was transmitting at the time using QSK with 15 ms delay the first time and 200 ms delay the second time. The Panadapter baseline suddenly fell down near the bottom and if I tuned around I could hear multiple harsh birdies, but no valid signals. Closing and restarting PowerSDR didn't resolve the issue. I had to turn off the Flex-5000A and then restart PowerSDR. I am running PowerSDR v1.10.2 on a 32-bit Vista on an Intel core-2 at 2.13GHz with 3.00 GB RAM. My keyer is plugged into the back of the Flex-5000. I am running MixW via VAC. My primary audio is set up with a buffer setting of 1024 and sample rate of 96000. The VAC is enabled with buffer setting of 2048 and sample rate of 48000. Break In is enabled as noted. I have the Flex-5000 as primary and CAT as the secondary keyer connection. I am using COM6 via VCom between the Flex-5000 and MixW for CAT control. I am hoping that this is not a Vista issue, but rather some other known issue. Has this happened to others? [Flexradio] Modifying Vista Starup to boost Flex-5000 Performance
I found that at times audio glitches were occuring while operating PowerSDR and MixW. I suspected that there were programs in the background periodically running and cutting into my CPU's capacity. My CPU was running at about 25-30% with occasional jumps near 100% when the glitches in audio occured. So after searching, I found this site: http://www.realtime-vista.com/administration/2007/05/stop_programs_from_running_at.htm It has information on limiting startup programs. I made the changes recommended and but allowed the ShuttlePro software to load. Now the CPU is cruising along at 14-18% on receive and about 24% when transmitting cw using MixW. The audio glitches and CPU usage spikes are gone. If you are having similar problems with XP, I am sure that the same maneuver might help. It would be nice if I could figure out a way to switch from the full startup setting to this modified bootup mode without rebooting, but am sure glad that I was able to lighten the load for my CPU while operating! [Flexradio] Noise with Flex-5000A to MixW using VAC 4
I think that one of you brainiacs may be able to give me some pointers. I have only had the Flex-5000 since last Friday and have been trying to get it tweaked mainly for cw and digital modes. Although I have been able to get the VAC and VCOM links working between PowerSDR/Flex-5000/MixW, I can't find optimum settings. Here is my best description of the waterfall display on MixW: signal is bright yellow with fuzzy dirty blue extending to the edge of the set filter width (set with PowerSDR) with horizontal blue streaks extending out to the edge of the display. Also, there appears to be some horizontal gaps in the display. When I first got it running, MixW did a great job decoding cw and the digital modes, but now it rarely works with cw and I haven't tried it again on BPSK-31. I am currently using a low Rx setting on the PowerSDR VAC setup: -32. The problem still exists if I go to -40. If I increase the virtual audio strength, the MixW waterfall goes from red/yellow/blue for the same areas. Unfortunately, the MixW help files don't work presently with Visa. Also, I finally figured out where Vista hides the MixW-related log files: C://*your computer name*/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Program Files/MixW! [Flexradio] Flex-5000 to MixW Noise via VAC 4 Problem Solved!
I just want to report back to the group that I have solved the problem with a noisy display on MixW with the help of Tim Ellison. It turned out that the PowerSDR and MixW CAT interface were setup with different baud rates (imagine that!). I discovered the problem after creating a new database. I don't know for sure if creating the new database corrected the problem or if the baud rate mismatch was the culprit. Whew!! Despite this glitch, I am having a great time with this rig.
