Re: [Flexradio] Dual Monitor Video Card issue for Power SDR v2.0.16

2011-01-05 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi Steve,

I purchased this card at Fry's Electronics in Phoenix for about $50 ($80 with
a
$30 mail-in rebate). It is a very good card -- for the money it is an
excellent
card.

BTW, this card with an ASUS M4A87TD EVO MB, an AMD Athlon X4 650 CPU and 4 Gig
of decent memory scores just under 1500 on the Passmark performance test.

Hi Steve

Depending on the resolution of the two monitors, you are probably pushing
that card's envelope.

I really like AMD/ATI video cards at the low-end price barrier. I know $50
might not seem low end but when you have guys with 4 bridged nVidia 470's in
one computer just to see the fake heads blown off bodies, then you know what
I mean!

Look at this one. XFX is a very good brand, the video chip is perfext for
PSDR machines as you are not paying for a lot of 3D power, it has 1GB of
video ram so it can handle the 1900x1080 resolutions on both monitors, etx

Re: [Flexradio] Teamspeak

2010-06-13 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi Brian,

Up to date instructions for using the Teamspeak
server are at http://openhpsdr.org/teamspeak.html General information about
the HPSDRproject can be found at www.openhpsdr.org. As Tim mentioned, the
weekly Teamspeak sessions these days are slanted
more toward the HPSDR activities.

IMHO, the HPSDR
project compliments the activities of Flex Radio Systems. HPSDR is an
experimenter's group populated by volunteers. Their mission is all
about advancing the state of the art of Software Defined Radio. If you
are interested in superb software and hardware SDR solutions from a very
customer oriented organization, Flex Radio Systems is the answer.

Re: [Flexradio] Mics for flexers

2008-03-17 Thread Dan Babcock
Rob,

I have used a Logitech 350USB headset successfully with the SDR-1000. The
connection to PowerSDRis through VAC (Virtual Audio Cable). This setup works
especially wellwith digital audio modes. The only downsides are the audio
chain willnot include the PowerSDR equalizer control and the stock headphones
canbe a little hard on the ears after an hour. The upsides are good
audioreports, flexible, independant software routing of audio through eitherthe
headset or speakers and a price of less than $50 at Office Max(Fabrique en
Chine). I have actually seen refurbished ones for under$20 on amazon.com.

BTW, It doesn't have to be a USB headset. A USB desk microphone and USB
speakers would work equally well.

[Flexradio] USB Headset for PowerSDR

2007-06-07 Thread Dan Babcock
A few months ago I mentioned the excellent audio results that I have achieved
with PowerSDR, an "el cheapo" USB headset and VAC. The headset that I use, a
Logitech 350, is currently on sale at buy.com for $14.99 after a $12.50 Mail-in
Rebate. Ground shipping is free.

This is NOT a headset that you would want to wear all day, everyday. But IMO,
it does give excellent audio results at a very reasonable price. My
recollection is that the price for mine was about $41 plus tax at either
OfficeDepot, or OfficeMax, or Staples. I have forgotten exactly where it was
purchased.

Re: [Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group Meeting

2007-05-24 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi Larry,

Everyone is welcome. We do the Linux meeting the same
way we do the regular Friday night session. We have a "roll call" at
the beginning where we go down the list of attendees and everyone can
talk about their recent activities. Then, we cover the special topic.
The microphone is then open for whatever subjects are of interest to
the group. We try to keep on topic but from time to time the
discussions do move off track.

Anyway, stop by if you have a chance.

[Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group Meeting

2007-05-24 Thread Dan Babcock
Hello Everyone,

Well, I am back from a "most excellent adventure" in Dayton and ready
to resume the regular Thursday night SDRLUG meetings. So this evening
in North America at 0100Z (6:00, 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00PM, depending on
your time zone) we will be getting together to discuss all things Linux.

Tonight our special topic will be HPSDR and what we will need in order to use
Ozy and Janus with Linux.

Hello Everyone,

I am out traveling this week and will not have an opportunity to log in for the
regular Thursday night SDRLUG meeting. I will, however be available next
Thursday and look forward to talking with everyone then.

Thinking back this is the first meeting I have missed since the first of the
year. I am a little backed up on posting the audio from the past three
meetings. I will try to do that upon my return to Arizona next week.

[Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group Meeting at 0100Z on TeamSpeak Featuring Ozy Testing

2007-04-19 Thread Dan Babcock
Hello Everyone,

Well, I am moving up in the world. For last week's meeting I was
connected to the internet via a "borrowed" wireless connection that was
picked up in the parking lot of the Best Western in Show Low, Arizona.
I am assuming it is Show Low's version of a Community LAN. This week I
am helping Scotty with the testing of the Ozy boards. He has
graciously offered me a LAN connection at their facility in Tempe. So
for a report on Ozy testing coupled with a discussion of current Linux
topics, tune in this evening, morning or afternoon depending on your
location at 0100Z.

Hello Everyone,

With
the assistance of Dale Boresz,WA8SRA, and Eric Ellison, AA4SW, I have
published a web page that contains information about the many Software
Defined Radio Activities at the 2007 Dayton Hamvention. We are just
getting a good start but so far I have included the SDR Forum abstracts
and some "rumors" about other SDR activities. We will include more
information as it becomes available. The URL for the web page is

If
you believe what has been posted is in error, if I have missed
something or you would like me to add another SDR related activity,
please let me know. Thanks to Dale's efforts the web page is in a
format that is easily and quickly modifiable.

nice cross platform (Linux, Mac OSX and Windows) GUI. It was originally

[Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group on TeamSpeak

2007-02-08 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi Everyone,

After
a week of sporadic internet connectivity and a couple of 18 hour work
days, I am back up and running with over 400 emails in my inbox. The
SDR Linux User Group meeting will be this evening at 0200Z. That is
9:00 PM in the East and 6:00 PM in the West. This evening our special
topics will be using Subversion and esvn and downloading files from an
svn repository.

Additionally, I would like to discuss having a
forum and a repository just for SDR Linux stuff. There are a number of
options from using the existing dttsp-linux Yahoo group and Flex-Radio
forum to having our own set of dedicated resources.

Hope that you can join us.

[Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group

2007-01-31 Thread Dan Babcock
Hello Everyone,

Just a reminder that there will be another SDR Linux User Group meeting
tomorrow evening at 0200Z on TeamSpeak. That is 9:00 PM on the East
coast and 6:00PM on the West coast. BTW, the plan is to have a meeting
every Thursday night (in the US) until further notice.

This week the special topics will be downloading and installing Ubuntu
and (How Original!) configuring sound cards in ALSA and properly
setting aliases for sound card operation with OSS applications.

Please let me know if anyone would like to have an additional SDRLUG
meeting this Saturday at 1400Z. For those of us in the Western US that
is an hour or two before the sun comes up. It requires some extra
effort on my part to get out of bed that early this time of year, but I
am more than willing to do it if anyone is interested.

[Flexradio] Reprise of the SDR Linux User Group on TeamSpeak

2007-01-01 Thread Dan Babcock
Hello Everyone,

After taking a few months off to sort myself out after a move from Florida and
Phoenix to the mountains of Arizona, I would like to restart the SDR Linux User
Group sessions on TeamSpeak. The first one will be on January 12 at 0100Z
(Thursday at 6:00PM in the West and 9:00PM in the East). We will follow that
up with a meeting on January 13 at 1400Z for out friends in places where the
0100Z session is at an inconvenient time.

Please let me know by email (n4xwe at yahoo.com) what topics you would like to
cover. Although I am more than willing to start things off, it is your group.
Also, let me know if the times that I have "arbitrarily" chosen are convenient
for everyone.

There are many new and interesting events that have taken place in the Linux,
SDR and amateur radio worlds since the group last met.

Happy New Year and 73,

[Flexradio] Informal ubuntu Question and Answer Session

2006-06-13 Thread Dan Babcock
Hello Everyone,

Tomorrow evening EDST (More precisely 15 June Z to 0400Z) the SDR Linux
User Group will be having an informal question and answer session for ubuntu
users on TeamSpeak. If you are using or are interested in using the ubuntu
Linux distribution, please stop by.

The format is decidedly informal and will be geared to the beginning and
intermediate level ubuntu user.

I have been working with ubuntu 6.06 (the Dapper Drake) since the RC release in
late May. IMHO, this distro is really slick.

For those that can't make it we will post an mp3 audio recording at HamSDR.com.

Re: [Flexradio] Ubuntu Linux Install question.

2006-05-26 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi John,

Which version of ubuntu are you installing?

The most recent version 6.06 is due for final release this Thursday. You might
want to try installing the current 6.06 release candidate. It is available at
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ The release candidate is stable, has an
optimized and updated installer and can be easily upgraded when the final
release appears.

I am not sure what the configuration of your system is but the issue of hanging
during installation may have more to do with SATA drives than the dual CPU's.

There is a substantial amount of help available on the ubuntu.org website.
There are a number of experienced Linux users that frequent the FlexRadio
Reflector so posting here will probably get you a fairly quick response.

If you have questions about Software Defined Radio and Linux there is also a
Yahoo Group (dttsp-linux) that is oriented in that direction.

Welcome!!!

[Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group TeamSpeak Meeting on Saturday, May 27 at 1300Z

2006-05-25 Thread Dan Babcock
Hello Everyone,

We will have a SDRLUG meeting on May 27 at 1300Z on TeamSpeak.

AB2KT and N4HY are doing the final spit polish and fingerprint removal on DttSP
for Linux. The ubuntu 6.06 "Dapper Drake" Release Candidate 1 was put into the
public domain today and the final release is scheduled for next Thursday. It
is an exciting time for Linux and Software Defined Radio.

Ken, N9VV, and I have been talking about a weekly Wednesday night session on
TeamSpeak to focus on aiding those that are just starting with ubuntu. Please
let us know if you are interested in learning or helping.

If anyone is interested in talking about what went on in Dayton, there will
most likely be a few Hamvention attendees in the group.

Ken,
 =

 Thanks for the heads up.
 =

Please remember everyone, this is BETA software. The official release of =
"Dapper Drake" is scheduled for early June.
 =

If you install a Beta version, it is generally not a good idea to "upgrade=
" when the official release comes out. What I am saying is when the offici=

Adopting a paranoid to the nth degree position means that any work you hav=

Re: [Flexradio] Linux distros

2006-04-21 Thread Dan Babcock
   All,
 =

I cannot help but chuckle when I see normally rational people become total=
ly irrational over Linux distributions. The main reasons that ubuntu was s=
elected as the favored distribution for DttSP and are listed below.
  =

  1) There are ubuntu supported packages for all of the dependencies that =
are required for compiling DttSP. In fact there are over 17,000 supported=
 packages.
  =

  2) Ubuntu has an excellent system installer. It isn't perfect, but it i=
s as good as any and better than most. I have seen one instance where ubun=
tu would not install. That was on an ASUS P4P800E - Deluxe motherboard. I=
t was not an installer problem, it iwas a Southbridge controller problem. =
The probability is high that this issue will be resolved in the next releas=
e of ubuntu.
  =

 3) Ubuntu has a regular upgrade cycle. Because ALSA modules are now comp=
iled into the kernel and many of us use the Delta 44, we need the added ALS=
A support that a recent stock kernel gives us.
  =

  4) Ubuntu uses the Synaptic Program Manager. Managing packages and depe=
ndencies is way too easy with Synaptic.
  =

  5) Ubuntu has a comprehensive set of software development tools. One co=
mmand, "sudo apt-get install build-essential" will make your ubuntu system =
development ready. =

  =

  6) Seventy-seven amateur radio packages are supported by ubuntu. Grante=
d some aren't worth the hard drive space they occupy, but it's the thought =
that counts. There is a supported package for gnuradio. My guess is the s=
ame will soon be true for DttSP.
  =

  7) There is an excellent chance that ubuntu will be around five years fr=
om now. Of the 200 distros that Jim Lux mentioned, how many will disappear=
 in the next two years?
  =

I have said this many times before and I will say it again. If you are tr=
uly comfortable with a different distribution and feel that it meets your n=
eeds, use it. If you want support for DttSP and SDR related projects, use =
ubuntu.

$15,000 they were willing to sell a license to me so that I could continue=
operating my business without having to worry about them taking me to cour=

 =

I talked to an attorney about it. He suggested I write a letter to the Co=

 =

About a month later I received a from the Bar Association saying the attor=

Thanks!

Sorry for copying the post on the linux forum, which I also monitor here.
(That is for the folks using Outlook and using ["forum"] filter, like I do)!

Folks (Especially dyed in the wool Windows XP folks like myself)

Although there are hundreds of Distributions of Linux out there, Dan has
suggested the Ubuntu distribution of Linux which is very full featured. If
we settle on one distro, it will probably be easier on the experts to help
us with adding features. The problem the Experts seem to have is deciding on
one distribution of Linux within their group. The Ubuntu forum is a wealth
of knowledge and helpful folks. I would assume that there are other distro
groups which are the same, however, if we "Appliance operators" settle on
Ubuntu then we can help ourselves. There HAS to be some Linux structure like
Windows XP as a 'single platform' for the basis of this development.

Here is the website where you can get a very capable "Windowing" operating
system. When you get there, if you are a purely MS Windows operator and have
the capability of burning a CD choose the Live CD for Mac, Intel or AMD
machine. Burn the ISO image to a CD and tell your computer BIOS to boot from
CD. It will boot you to a test version of Ubuntu on your machine without
'hurting' your XP macine. It may not work, but then again it may. If it does
have problems you will know how to ask questions. IT DOES not change your
Windows installation AT ALL and is well worth the risk, if you want to try
something new! (We wouldn't be Flexers if we were not into the NEW!) =

If you have an old computer around that you can 'build up' then try the full
distribution.

Beware these ISO images are pretty big so if you are on dial-up. Start at
about 7 A.M your time and come back at 7 P.M. You can also purchase the
images on the website. If you want to experiment Dale or I can snail mail
you the current distro on CD. =

Think "Outside the Box"

We have some really outstanding programmers supporting this project in
software! (Edson you listening? Come out of hiding mode! I have made the
initial effort!)

Here are the instructions for downloading the DttSP source code from Source=
forge:
 =

This next series of text commands will download and install a directory tr=
ee containing the source code files from the CVS server at Sourceforge (ww=
w.sourceforge.net) to the system directory /usr/local/sdr. The root of th=
e source tree is the dttsp directory. Depending on the volume of Sourcefo=
rge server activity and the speed of your internet connection, it may take=
from a few seconds to a few minutes for the file transfers to complete. =

 =

 Type in a terminal:
  =

  =

  =

cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/dttsp login
=

You will be asked for a password for CVS. No password is required. Press =
the ENTER key. There may be a warning that the /root/.cvspass file does =
not exist. Since .cvspass simply stores passwords and no password is requ=
ired, we can ignore it. =

 =

  =

CVS password:[Enter]
=

  =

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/dttsp co -P dttsp
=

You now have all of the source code that is require for compiling DttSP. A=
couple of additional points. You must have the correct permissions for t=

Don AE5K <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hello Everyone...

Earlier today I sent a message to the FlexRadio list with the subject
"Am I Missing Something? ..." which started an avalanche of "replies".
It involved my frustration at trying to get the latest alpha version of
PowerSDR from the SVN site running.

I found the problem later this afternoon. The problem is that the
"Release" folder (from SVN) does not contain two dll files from
Microsoft that have been in the past included in the installation of
previous betas and releases. Copying those two files into the alpha
folder allowed PowerSDR to work.

I would like to emphasize that stuff like this needs to be documented
somewhere so that others don't run into the same problem.

It was not my intention to start a big debate over the merits of
Subversion. It is a neat program/system. The URL that Chris mentioned
to just download the releases would have helped me and I'm sure that tip
will help others save on downloading time if they are not interested in
source files.

While I've got the floor, I'd like to try to clear up a misconception
that I had and I think that others had too. Gerald has NOW made it
clear (I think) that Betas will continue to be posted on the website.
THIS IS NOT WHAT I HAD UNDERSTOOD from previous very recent postings on
the FlexRadio reflector, to wit:

> We are done FOREVER with releasing alpha and beta level =

> code via the web interface.
--Robert McGwier rwmcgwier at comcast.net

--Robert McGwier rwmcgwier at comcast.net

I hope, Gerald, you see why there are some bad thoughts and confusion on
this reflector. I was under the impression that only official releases
(such as 1.4.4 and 1.6.0) would be placed on the website for download;
your latest postings indicate otherwise.

Editorial (soapbox) comment: my posting this morning indicated I had
problems. I felt it fell in that gray zone between cockpit problems and
bugs and that I might get advice and help from this list and was not a
candidate for the buglist. I was WRONG! Not a single one of the
replies (counted 19 so far) addressed the problem I was having. Instead
it veered off into off-topic stuff which was of no help to the original
poster who had a problem. So much for help from those more experienced
that I. That has not been the case in the past on this list, and I
certainly hope it is not the trend.

Re: [Flexradio] [OT] dual-boot Windows XP machine

2006-04-16 Thread Dan Babcock
Ken,

If you have ever add a new hard drive to an Windows XP
machine and install the XP OS on the new drive and
leave the XP OS on the old drive bootable, you will,
like it or not, end up with a Windows XP dual boot
system. Your options will be to run the old disk XP
OS or the new disk XP OS. After moving data from the
old disk to the new disk and deleting the old XP OS,
the system on start up will still present the XP OS
dual boot choices. The only problem is the XP OS on
the old disk won't actually boot.

The method of fixing this problem is rather obscure
but requires manually editing the boot.ini file to
reflect a single boot choice per the instructions in
this link -- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=289022

Hi:

New problem developed this morning. I am using a Toshiba laptop with the USB
adapter and a Firebox audio setup. All was working fine last night, but all
of a sudden this morning, when I try to transmit it automatically
"unselects" by USB connection. Windows popup telling me that I need to go to
setup and select "USB connection". When I go there, its been unselected. So
if I select it, the above loop is repeated. I should note that it does allow
me to tune, but not transmit (CW).
I've rebooted, restarted the software and tried installing release 18, all
with the same result. What would cause something like this to happen?

Thanks,
Ken N8KJG

[Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group Meeting (17 March at 0200Z)

2006-03-14 Thread Dan Babcock
The next TeamSpeak Meeting of the SDRLUG will be Thursday, March 16 at 9:00 PM
EST (17 March at 0200Z).

 Topics for discussion are:

 1) The pluses (or minuses) of using ubuntu as our baseline distribution.
 2) Installing DttSP, DttSP-Shell and the Java GUI for dttsp.
 3) The status of Revison 2 of the DttSP code.
 4) Expanding the scope of this group to include Mac OS X and BSD users.

We will use a roll call format that is similar to the Friday night TeamSpeak
sessions. When we do the roll call everyone is free to talk about whatever
they like. However, please try to cover:

 1) Your experience with ubuntu, if any.
 2) Your experiences with installing DttSP, DttSP-Shell or the Java GUI.
 3) What you feel is the best focus for this group.

After the roll call we will have an open mic discussion. This group is for
every level of experience. Lurkers are welcome.

But, for me, "good enough" means I can run N1MM's logger, or MixW, and
have something, somewhere autoloading DX spots.

I don't expect the Flex test process or official minimums to account for
this added ham-related stuff (down that path lies madness). What I do
expect, from experience, is that even with ample CPU left over, that the
more raw horsepower I have laying about, the better things seem to work
in terms of things like continous audio and the parallel port CW keyer
working better. I don't have scientific measurements here. What I do
have is an observation that horsepower matters, even when the CPU isn't
saturated.

Re: [Flexradio] Building a "Flexible" computer for the future

2006-03-02 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi Larry,

Funny you should mention Compaq. Depending upon the style of the case, chances
are the power supply is not a standard (6x3.5x5.5) ATX power supply.

Having gone through the misery of tracking down a replacement power supply for
a friend, I was thinking of Compaq while writing the "warning" paragraph.

I bought a laptop last year to replace one that was about five years old.
There was a world of difference in the number of industry interchangeable
components in the old versus the new. Even to the point that there are now
internal card slots for add on cards (Dell calls them mini pci) similar to PCI
slots that meet some sort of a standard. The hard drive configuration is
standard and the optical drives meet one of two standards. Standard PCMCIA
slots still exist. Batteries, LCD glass and a host of other items remain
proprietary.

The SDR-1000 mini-ITX box has a standard laptop hard drive and a laptop
slimline optical drive. Those do require a small adapter to interface to the
mini-ITX IDE cables. Using a standard 3.5" hard drive is also an option. Of
course the best solution is to use a multiple gig Compact Flash card in place
of the hard drive.

This is an excellent point. I should also point out, however, that as
far as I can make out, this is less prevelant than it used to be and, to
the extent it happens, is often a good thing. On my current COMPAQ box
(I don't always roll my own either), the nonstandard bits do not look to
be a big barrier to upgrades. There's an ingenious set of screws, for
instance, that are used to mount the hard files without rails and yet
without screwing them directly into the case either. The screws
interface to some wonderfully clever bits of plastic mounting that work
extremely well together. But, the screws themselves must fit into the
entirely standard holes that come with the hardfile.

Likewise, a single screw holds a special plate that holds in the PCI
cards. That one I'm not so impressed with, but it seems to work.

It could be, however, that there remains something nonstandard about the
motherboard that I will discover if it ever needs to be replaced. On the
other hand, in that case, the worst I would have to do is replace that
with a generic one and put it in a standard case and power supply. The
memory, processor, PCI cards, hardfiles, etc. are all standard, so they
should be easy to replace or to stuff into a more generic case. So, the
most we should be talking about nowadays are the mother board and, just
possibly, the power supply. As time has gone by, economics has forced
even the big volume manufacturers to be more and more standard in their
products, especially on the desktop (it will be interesting to see if
laptops become more generic over time).

Is anyone using a laptop with Flex-Radio?

While I remain a perspective purchaser of an SDR-1000, when I get one I am
considering using a laptop with a Firewire card to drive a FireBox 6x10.
Has anyone tried this setup?

Thanks.

Re: [Flexradio] Building a "Flexible" computer for the future

2006-03-02 Thread Dan Babcock
The post about buying or building computers started me thinking
about the genealogy of my “utility” box. This system was originally built as
leading edge machine. It had a high-end Abit motherboard and a Slot A 700 MHz
CPU. The case was chosen after an exhaustive search. It was the highest rated
one on a now defunct overclocker website.

Six years later the plastic is brittle and a little yellow around the edges
and it is missing some hardware, but the case and the floppy drive cable are
all that is left of that original system.

  Adding up the mods yields:

 3 Motherboards
 4 CPU's
 3 CPU Coolers
 7 System Memory DIMM's
4 Sound Cards (A Santa Cruz and Delta 44 are currently installed)
7 Hard Drives (The first were two RAID configured 20 Gig IBM DeskStars. The
most recent are two 160 Gig WD Caviars)
 2 3.5” Floppy Drives
2 Network Cards (Predating the built-in LAN)
1 Modem Card (Those were the days)
 3 Power Supplies
 2 UPS's
 3 Keyboards
 4 Mice
 2 Monitors
 2 CD-ROM/DVD Drives (The first was a CD-ROM only)
 3 System Fans
 2 Speaker Systems
 2 Windows Operating Systems
 11 Linux Distributions
 Assorted Cables

The exact amount of my original investment escapes me. My recollection is
about $1200. Larry's statement is right on target. A modest initial investment
and two or three hundred dollars a year in new parts has provided me with very
reliable, maintainable and economic system. It is one of those few things in
life that works better today than it did yesterday.

I don't always roll my own. The rest of the "menagerie” includes a Shuttle
SN25P (64 bit Athlon) that is part of an entertainment system, a notebook and a
mini-ITX system that has become a dedicated SDR-1000 (Windows and Linux) box.

A word of warning about purchasing complete systems. Yes, they are less
expensive. But many of the larger system guys, Dell, HP and Gateway come to
mind, use a few “non-standard” parts. If a component dies, goes obsolete or
otherwise needs to be replaced, it may have a non-standard shape, size,
mounting hole location or connector that makes replacing it very difficult.

Pardon the brief episode of nostalgia.

[Flexradio] SDR Linux User Group Meeeting Audio Posted

2006-02-22 Thread Dan Babcock
The TeamSpeak audio recording of the inaugural meeting
of the SDR Linux User Group has been posted at
HamSDR.com in the folder SDRLinuxUserGroup.

The direct link is
http://www.hamsdr.com/dnld.aspx?id=146

The attendees were:

Bill KD5TFD
Bob N4HY
Frank AB2KT
John G0ORX/N6LYT
Phil VK6APH
Bob VE3GKM
Cecil KD5NWA
Dan N4XWE
Don AE5K
Kirb VE6IV
Tom K3IO
Franklin N6NKF
Serge VA3SB
Mike AA8K

John G0ORX/N6LYT developer of the DttSP Java GUI
checked in from the UK. No mean feat at 0300Z. John
was unfortunately fighting a wireless microphone
problem. He did make a number of text comments. The
most significant was during the discussion of the
compatibility of existing DttSP GUI's with the highly
anticipated DttSP Linux revised code.

John G0ORX/N6LYT =>"I would prefer to run on the
standard release. I added a couple of mods to the
port to support the different displays. Should only
take me a short time to change the code to support the
new version."

If you are interested in using DttSP with Linux, Mac
OS X or BSD (there are a lot of good reasons that
everyone should be), please drop by for our next
meeting on TeamSpeak.

Details will be announced soon on the SDR reflector.

Re: [Flexradio] [SDRLUG] Expanding the Scope a Little

2006-02-22 Thread Dan Babcock
In general, it always seems a plus to be more
inclusive.

My major concern is the amount of technical support
that can be given to users of other OS's. I view a
user group as being a comprehensive resource for
multiple levels of expertise.

This isn't to say we couldn't do it with BSD and OSX
users in the future, but today our ability to support
a Linux or DttSP user from the core of the group is
outstanding. If there is a question, someone can
answer it.

Can we say the same for the needs of BSD and OSX
users?

2006-02-21 Thread Dan Babcock
Ken,

By all means, go ahead. I actually belong to two of
those groups. Probably should have thought about it
myself.

The SDRLUG isn't limited to just licensed amateurs.
There are a few participants in the groups you cited
that are only interested in SWL'ing, software
development or DSP coding.

They are welcome, as well.

Thanks.

John,

Everything is go for this evening (late morning in
your part of the world).

I anticipate the first meeting to be "organizational"
in nature. I have some definite ideas about the
direction I would like to go. But having said that,
the success of the group will revolve around meeting
the needs of the group.

My expectation is that we will have a cross section of
users. As mentioned in my previous post, I see the
objectives as:

Assisting anyone that would like to install the Debian
Linux distribution.

Providing assistance to those that have any Linux
distribution up and running, are comfortable with it
and would like to install the TeamSpeak client, the
jsdr core or DttSP-Shell.

Developing utilities, installation packages and
documentation for the jsdr core and DttSP-Shell.

Giving encouragement and feedback to those who are
developing Linux applications.

Developing a self-installing suite of programs in a
live Linux distro (ala Knoppix and Harv's Hamshack)
that would include both application and development
software for the SDR-1000. This could be on a CD,
DVD or even an OS on a (memory) stick.

Again, this view is from my personal perspective. The
actual direction we go remains a fairly large TBD at
the moment.

Hopefully you will be able to make it. I am looking
forward to your participation.

For anyone who might have missed the first
announcement. We are having a meeting on TeamSpeak of
the SDR Linux User Group at 0300Z Wednesday. That is
10:00PM this evening.

Re: [Flexradio] Future of SDR?

2006-02-20 Thread Dan Babcock
The "preamble" of part 97 reads:

The rules and regulations in this Part are designed to
provide an amateur radio service having a fundamental
purpose as expressed in the following principles:

(a) Recognition and enhancement of the value of the
amateur service to the public as a voluntary
noncommercial communication service, particularly with
respect to providing emergency communications.

(b) Continuation and extension of the amateur's proven
ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio
art.

(c) Encouragement and improvement of the amateur
service through rules which provide for advancing
skills in both the communications and technical phases
of the art.

(d) Expansion of the existing reservoir within the
amateur radio service of trained operators,
technicians, and electronics experts.

(e) Continuation and extension of the amateur's unique
ability to enhance international goodwill.

Many amateur radio activities barely meet the ideals
set out in one of the above paragraphs. How many of
those principles fit within what the SDR community is
doing? My count is three resolutely and the other two
peripherally.

My prediction is that in fifteen years, we will look
back on the five years from 2002 to 2007 as having
been halcyon days in the development of radio
technology.

I, for one, am thrilled to be a part of it.

Re: [Flexradio] On open source development

2006-02-17 Thread Dan Babcock
For a number of years, I managed an international
subsidiary of a US aerospace corporation from a New
York office. The inconvenience (as in I can't even
imagine anyone getting up that early) an 0300 UTC
starting time represents for our European users is not
lost on me. If we meet earlier in the evening, we
lose the western US. If we meet later, we lose the
eastern states.

The solution might be to meet on the weekends or
possibly have two separate weekday sessions with a
combined mp3 recording for later replay.

There has not been much recent mention on the
Flex-Radio reflector of John's Java GUI for DttSP. I
have used it with a Softrock v5.0 and it works
superbly.

Earlier this week John released revised code that
includes some significant enhancements.

I plan to give the new version a try this weekend.

Re: [Flexradio] An Open Invitation to the Software Defined Radio Linux User Group

2006-02-14 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi Mike,

The reference to counting the number of TeamSpeak
participants was my version of a "straw poll" to see
how many were truly serious about using Linux.

The installation of TeamSpeak files in Linux is
trivial. My experience has been that setting the
sound with many distribution, desktop and sound card
combinations is not always easy.

For a partial listing of Linux Ham Radio Software
check out http://radio.linux.org.au/

For a list of some of the packages in Debian check out
http://packages.debian.org/stable/hamradio/

Look forward to talking with you on Tuesday.

[Flexradio] An Open Invitation to the Software Defined Radio Linux User Group

2006-02-14 Thread Dan Babcock
Last year at Dayton, Eric2 and I had a long discussion
about a number of SDR issues including the future of
SDR and Linux. The SDR and Linux combination has been
on my mind for some time.

Judging from the comments of the past couple of days
it looks like we are ready for an SDR Linux User
Group. Most Linux user groups use an acronym ending
in LUG. Software Defined Radio Linux User Group
contracts to SDRLUG, pronounced (if it doesn't sound
too much like a disaffected cadre of Apple users)
Cider Lug.

Among other possible activities, a user group could
make a big impact by:

I am not a Linux Patriot. I don't give a hoot about
the cathedral and the bazaar or the Evil Empire. My
knowledge of the Linux OS has come the hard way. Over
the past few years most Linux distributions have
become an easily installable, very stable, OS with an
avalanche of applications, libraries, development
software and utilities. Linux is ready for prime
time.

We have a “perfect storm” brewing in the ether that
includes increasingly capable digital electronics,
computer audio hardware, and DSP application software.
There is no question that the Linux community offers
the widest range of tools for taking advantage of the
SDR opportunities in front of us. For our purposes
the installed user base is irrelevant. We want the
best available tools.

When we get together for the weekly Friday night
sessions on TeamSpeak, I do an informal survey of the
operating systems that everyone is using. This can be
done by highlighting the user and clicking Get
Connection Info with a right-click menu. Normally,
it is about 20% Linux, 5% Mac and 75% Windows 2000 or
XP.

OK. So lets move ahead by getting together on
TeamSpeak next Tuesday evening at 10:00 pm EST. For
those of us who are world time challenged that is 0300
UTC on Wednesday, February 22. We will adjust our
times to accommodate everyone as we move forward.
I'll serve as the “net control.” If you want to
listen but aren't too excited about talking, just turn
off your microphone. The session will be recorded,
edited slightly for dead space and posted as an MP3
for later download.

This for everyone. It doesn't matter if you are
experienced, a noobie or just think the Penguin is
cute.

Bring your comments, questions and suggestions.

This is a user group.

Re: [Flexradio] DRM signal on 7073khz?

2006-01-27 Thread Dan Babcock
Fred, Richard, Joe, Ignacio, et al,

I received a "good natured" private e-mail last night
chiding me for turning the SDR-1000 forum into an
SWL'ers mystery signal forum. But I think that this
thread should be of interest to the general SDR-1000
population for at least a couple of reasons.

Not all of us are in a location where we have the
opportunity to hear this signal live. But, by using
the IQ wav file record and playback features in the
PowerSDR code we can all take a look at the signal.
If interested in or knowledgeable about what is there,
we can throw in our two cents worth. If a picture is
worth a thousand words then, at least rhetorically,
what is an IQ wav file worth?

I suspect (as in wild guess at this point) that the
signals Fred, Richard, and Ignacio are looking at are
HF Digital Voice using the G4GUO protocol. This mode
can be used for either voice or data (as in SSTV).
That there are similar looking signals seen in
non-amateur parts of the HF spectrum might be due to
these waveforms being similar to the Advanced
Narrowband Digital Voice Terminal signal that is
generated by a number of military ground and airborne
transceivers. There are also a number of commercial
services worldwide that are using similar protocols
for voice and data transmissions.

For additional information take a look at

http://www.wunclub.com/digfaq/

There will be a time in the not too distant future
when the PowerSDR or an equivalent Linux program will
have an HF Digital Voice capability or will be
seamlessly integrated to an application that has it.
After all it's a brave new world out there where our
capabilities are limited only by our imagination.

Fred, I unfortunately it seems now, turned off my ftp
server when leaving Florida a couple of days ago. I
will be back there next Thursday. Unless you figure
out a better way, maybe you could hold onto the wav
file and send it to me then. I want to look at the
file with Edson Pereira's DttSP-Shell program.

Re: [Flexradio] DRM signal on 7073khz?

2006-01-26 Thread Dan Babcock
Hi Richard,

Record the .wav file using the Pre-Processed Audio
option.

Upload the resulting wav file to the HamSDR website by
going to the home page
http://www.hamsdr.com/Home.aspx. Log-in and select My
Account => Upload Files. On the next page select
Public Directory and click the Upload a file button.
Then follow the directions.

The .wav files can become fairly large very quickly so
2 to 3 minutes is probably the optimum length for
recording.

Fred,

Would you or Richard be able to upload a short (two or
three minute) wave file of the signal to WA8SRA's
www.hamsdr.com website?

BTW, this website is becoming an outstanding source of
information for the SDR-1000 and SoftRock communities.
 Thanks, Dale.

Re: [Flexradio] Linux and Santa Cruz

2005-06-12 Thread Dan Babcock

Bob,

ALSA has a very nice utilities package
(alsa-utils)that among others contains a very useful
utility called "alsaconf."

You can inquire if it is already installed on your OS
by typing in a terminal (as root) "which alsaconf." If
that command returns /usr/sbin/alsaconf or something
similar, alsaconf is already installed. If that is the
case then start alsaconf by typing in (as root) the
full path and file name for the executable, ie.,
/usr/sbin/alsaconf.

The alsaconf utility will query your OS to find the
hardware configuration of the audio system. It will
then configure ALSA to run correctly. With the Santa
Cruz sound card, there should be a 99% certainty it
will set up ALSA correctly.

If the alsaconf utility is not found by the "which"
command, first try to finding the alsa-utils RPM for
your distribution and installing it. If there is no
available RPM, a tarball for alsa-utils can be found
on the ALSA website http://www.alsa-project.org/

There is another utility called alsamixergui that
provides an easy to use graphical user interface to
the alsa mixer. It can also be found in most cases as
an RPM for a specific distro or as a tarball on the
ALSA website.

By the way the ALSA Project website has, not
trivially, a treasure trove of information about ALSA
either on the site or available via sumerous links.
Great reading if your are interested in those sort of
things.
