Re: [Flexradio] Possible to run PSDR on a tablet for use with aFlex-1500
Why not run it as a remote station using Teamview, Skype, etc., for the remote voice/video? At that point as long as the tablet, cellphone, etc., can IP connect using the voice/video applications, you're good to go! (Still need to choose suitable devices for user interfaces!) You'll need a modest (or better) interconnect pipe. Watch out for latency. Avoid WIFI if possible. You have to go through a multistep, arcane process involving two reboots to get Windows 8.1 to allow unsigned drivers, and that works but as soon as you shut down or reboot, it reverts to rejecting them and you have to start over. I'd love to know a fix for that. I'm using PSDR 2.6.4 and an adapter to convert the micro USB on the screen side to USB to the radio. As I recall it worked well enough, but because of the Win8.1 issues, I never got to do much with it and am sort of stymied. But as I recall I was able to do most of the usually needed functions in tablet mode. The "A<>B" switch flips the frequency's not the transmit VFO. You still transmit on VFO "B". Try transmitting of VFO "A" while in split mode. Do it this way, setup the 5000 as before. While in split mode you will notice that VFO "B" is now the transmit VFO by the small TX button on the bottom left corner of the VFO "B" display being highlighted. Now look at VFO "A". The small TX button VFO "A" is not highlighted indicating that you are receiving on VFO "A".This is all normal for the FlexRadio's. Now use the mouse and click on the small TX button of VFO "A" and watch what happens. When you do this you switch the transmit function back to VFO "A" and it takes you out of split mode. That is why I say that the button A<>B transfers the frequency's but not the transmit VFO's. So that whatever frequency is in the "B" VFO while in split mode is transmitted on. When you turn off the split mode, then VFO "A" becomes the transmit VFO. Re: [Flexradio] Distortion on my signal.
Hi Dan... I have had similar experiences, esp with recent PSDR release versions. I think changes in the software have made my previous level sets obsolete. I notice that other people have answered you, and I concur that you should eliminate any chance of RFI, then use the Rob W1AEX's excellent flowchart methods for audio setting. In particular note his recommendations to avoid getting even close to 0dB on peaks-5dB or even -10dB will still provide plenty of output, yet will give you the headroom needed to avoid the ALC kicking in. Also pay attention to how you have your PSDR defaults set...that is, are you saving the changes you make in transmit profiles, and how are your transmit profiles saved (auto save vs manual save)? After those homework assignments, if you still have audio grunge (I did), contact me, I may have some other suggestions for you. I finally have my system producing clean audio with adequate RF output, but it took a long time getting back here. On earlier PSDR versions, it was not this critical, but now the technique has changed. Re: [Flexradio] SSB transmit has 800 Hz tone, no audio
If you are using the balanced input on the back, you need to change the mixer to select balanced (on database reset it defaults to unbalanced). (Of course, make sure "all mute" is not selected!) Check if you have (or need) the Mic Boost on. The rear balanced input (if you use it) is a fairly high impedance, and needs a fairly high audio level (0 to +4 dBu). Make sure none of the later audio stages are shut down (every stage should be close mid-range). See if any of this helps. Re: [Flexradio] Strange noise in 5K audio chain
I don't believe I have any RFI issues here. I am running an Astron RM60M has has never had any problems that I am aware of. The "background noise level issue" described DOES here. I can reduce it by about 30dB by muting all inputs on the mixer, but cannot make it fully disappear. I think it is a new phenomena, along with my SSB and AM audio sounding muddy, over-compressed, bubbly etc. I have been using Rob W1AEX's audio chain flow chart for several years and have had great audio. Recently my audio went to hell and I have been having a really tough time getting back to where it was. This may be coincidence, but I only recently changed PSDR from 2.3.5 to 2.5.3 and from where I sit it seems that the audio chain changed significantly. Others with this problem might check to see if MIC BOOST is defaulted on...I thought I had mine off, but discovered it's on...right out of the box that'll add about 15DB gain to the audio chain. I use the balanced input. 73 Dan K0DAN -Original Message- From: Robert Costa, KB6QXM Sent: January 08, 2013 02:39 PM To: Bob Kay ; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Strange noise in 5K audio chain Considering all of the RF ingress issues and EMI issues I have AND considering I am using a Astron 50a with my Flex 5000a, I definately want to know if there is any issues with the Astron. 73, Robert KB6QXM "Ham Radio Open Conversation" Yahoo group owner/moderator - Reply message - From: "Bob Kay" To: Subject: [Flexradio] Strange noise in 5K audio chain Date: Tue, Jan 8, 2013 12:14 pm While setting up a new PR40 on my Flex 5K, I’ve discovered some sort of noise getting into the audio chain. If I disable all audio inputs in the Mixer window, the noise disappears. Likewise, if I decrease an active input to 0, the noise goes away. It's definitely not RF since I can set the DRIVE to 0 and have it occur. Even when the noise is at worst case, there isn’t any output on the wattmeter. Re: [Flexradio] V2.2.3 Memories disappear ?
It is always a good idea to save your databases and print a screenshot of each menu screen before you do anything radical (like a version change). Most times it goes smoothly, but it never hurts to keep some records. I just went from 2.3.5 to 2.5.3, and while it was fairly painless, my TX audio profiles turned to mush. My screenprints from the prior version were helpful, but to great, and I had to spend about 30 minutes following Rob's (W1AEX) audio tweak routine to bring everything back to "good". I have also used (and recommend) K9DUR's database export utility, however I find that with major Version changes by Flex, subtle changes happen. In the final analysis I suggest a new database with each rebuild, then follow the data and screenshots you have used previously. Re: [Flexradio] Logging programs
I too have been using LOGic since Version 4, am currently using V8. Yes they have V9 out but I never did the upgrade because the product is so mature the new features didn't really add anything for me and I couldn't justify the price. Version 8, however (V8.0.104) is running perfectly, and interfaces great with Flex/PSDR, DDUTIL, VSP, VAC. I understand that the new version is now more flexible in its support of virtual serial ports, and this might be an important feature for the Flex/PSDR user who only wants to have PSDR talk to the logger via CAT. I also understand LOGic now supports multiple QTH and multiple operators, altho I don't use those features...might work for you. Best bet is to contact Dennis at the HoseNose site. Over the years I have looked at other logging products but have never found anything as versatile as LOGic. I will say that for fast-paced contests, N1MM is the speed racer...I use N1MM for some contests, then bring back the log data into LOGic using ADIF. As with all things, YMMV! Re: [Flexradio] Sweeping noise/signal across band
The 1/sec "click" is almost certainly an electric fence. I hear it on some bands, and there are some hobby farms within 1/2 mile of here so electric fence is likely. It is not a big nuisance, but is annoying. The moving noise humps appear to come in several flavors. The fact that they disappear when inside the Flex passband and you cannot tune them in suggests they are Flex-generated and are moved/suppressed by PSDR. Also, if you turn Spur Reduction on/off, they will move, which is a sure sign of internal noise. Then there are other noise humps, radiosondes, and sweepers on the bands. These you can tune in and do not move with S.R. If you tune the low end of 80M during the day (when the noise floor is low) you will see a bunch of noise humps which I believe to be intermod and overload from the AM broadcast segment. These should disappear with highpass filter on the antenna input (I have not tried it). The various sweepers could be guys playing with their VFO, radiosonds, spread spectrum, or all sorts of man-made noise from CPU's, monitors, power supplies, etc. The good thing is most of the time these QRM/QRN are curiosities and annoying, but do not curtail operation much. In many cases, before we had the panadaptors and could see what was below 100dBm, we didn't even know that crud was there! 73 Dan K0DAN -Original Message- From: Patrick Greenlee Sent: December 02, 2012 06:38 AM To: K0DAN ; Bob Kay ; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Sweeping noise/signal across band I also see things running back and forth across the panadapter, relatively localized humps a few dB above background. I don't hear them when they transit my operating freq. I typically operate in Panafall Mode and every once in a while I see a horizontal trace as some source sweeps through in freq. They pique my interest but these anomalies do not interfere with my operation. I'll check the UPS idea as there is one in the next room and another on a different floor. When a band is quiet I do hear a steady repeated noise pulse on approximate 1 sec rep rate but I suspect it is my electric fence charger. Luckily it is just noticeable and not a problem, I wouldn't want to risk the herd wandering where they shouldn't because I had to shut down the hot wire to talk on the radio. 73 Patrick AF5CK -Original Message- From: K0DAN Sent: Saturday, December 01, 2012 7:56 PM To: Bob Kay ; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Sweeping noise/signal across band Good point! [Flexradio] HELP WITH VAC
Is there someone who can mentor me with VAC? I have been reading docs, trying examples from the Flex WIKI, doing trial-and-error etc., but still can’t get audio I/O using VAC (V.4.12). Frustrated! I am pretty sure VAC is working, since I can see activity in the VAC Control Panel. I have set up two virtual audio cables, and have corresponding cables defined in PSDR, also in whatever software apps I happen to be trying. The buffers all match and setup parameters are copied right out of the docs and WIKI articles. I have tried the MME and other drivers, doesn’t seem to make any difference. When tuned to signals, the software doesn’t decode anything, nor can I modulate a signal. When trying to pipe audio to/from VOIP apps, I can’t generate any audio nor hear anything coming back. What I want to do: a) Get any basic packet or RTTY program running with PSDR/Flex, then use this as a “template” for experimenting with other digital mode software. b) Want to use PSDR/Flex as my single source for audio I/O for other VOIP apps. My balanced mic audio goes into my Flex 5K, and the PSDR audio output goes from the F5K to an external stereo amp/speakers. This works fine as a voice transmitter/receiver, but something is not set up right using the Flex/VAC as a virtual sound card. c) I would like to tap off Flex/PSDR and run audio I/O to 3rd party VOIP applications such as Skype, TeamViewer, EchoLink, etc. I have tried all the audio I/O selections I can find but still can’t talk/hear with the digital mode software, nor hear using VOIP. I think my problem is failure to define proper I/O device on the 3rd party software. Seems simple but I can’t make it work. Help? Suggestions? And/or an option to park the antenna and then activate external relays to lower a telescoping tower if the average wind speed exceeds, say, 30 (or "x") MPH? Commercial weather stations (e.g. Davis and others, http://www.davisnet.com/weather/products/weather_product.asp?pnum=06162) send their data to remote receivers, the data output of which can be ported to 3rd party applications. 73 dan k0dan -Original Message- From: Ken Alexander Sent: March 19, 2012 11:53 AM To: Michael Walker ; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Query to the user group Cool idea Mike, even though I only have a vertical, which is always pointed in the right (or wrong) direction! Re: [Flexradio] PSDR v2.3.5
Thanks again for the feedback and quick responses. I guess the lesson learned here, is, that during an update, a little extra insurance is to do the update, then, force a default database and go from there. Re: [Flexradio] weird noise source popping up
Mark: Over the past few months I have been logging and tracking power line noise, which turns out to be a composite of power line noise PLUS a variety of local noise sources... I have seen some "noise humps" across the baseband (these come and go), also have seen a few different wave forms travel up and down the band(s). I think some of this is spread spectrum, some is computer or power supply EMI, and others remain mysterious. Your noise floor is probably dropping on the Inv-L because it is less efficient and is not picking up the high-freq signals as well as your hex beam. You may wish to keep track of date/time, temperature, humidity, and other factors...see if there is any pattern to when the noise appears. Also, if you have rain, does the offending signal change? If you can make a WAV or WMV file of your noise, I can compare it to signatures I have been logging here. Re: [Flexradio] 5000 and Rack Gear
If you are experiencing too much gain going into the Flex, make sure the Mic Boost (Setup/Audio/Primary) is unchecked. In my case, I need (or prefer) to select Mic Boost as it seems to keep the Flex audio input at workable levels, but each situation is different. I'm not convinced there's "only" 4 places to adjust mic gain HIHI! There's a lot of stuff in the audio chain, one just needs to go step-by-step and make sure there are not extreme adjustments throughout the chain. Re: [Flexradio] 5000 and Rack Gear
I too ran some rack gear prior to Flex. Not the same as yours, and I still have some of the audio gear, but am thinking of getting rid of it, as it is rather redundant and no longer adds much to the audio mix that the Flex can't do by itself. Of course YMMV but I kind of like the idea of downsizing and simplifying things...right now I'm running an RE20 "flat" into a mixer, then to the Flex, and doing very modest EQ and CPDR/DEXP on my audio. I have TX audio profiles for AM, hifi SSB and DX SSB, mostly just different bandwidths, and a bit more aggressive EQ/processing. Seems to work quite wel, I get great audio reports, and nobody can tell the difference. At one time I had Symetrix 528, Aphex Big Bottom, and a split-band processor (jeez, I can't remember the model!) pumping my ricebox radios, but none of that pre-processing seems necessary any more! 73 dan k0dan -Original Message- From: Craig Gagner Sent: January 11, 2012 05:48 PM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] 5000 and Rack Gear I just got a Flex 5000 and I am loving it, much nicer than my old SDR-1000. Running Flex 5K on a WIN7x64 AMD Phenom II 3.2 Ghz w/ 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD5670. PSDR works FINE, as do all other PC apps. Since all my Flex audio is via the 1394, I use the on-motherboard "soundcard", it is adequate and only used for Windows sounds, occasional VOIP, web browsing, etc. However when I shut down or reboot the PC, I get about 30 seconds of loud popping (sounds like mega popcorn cooking), then it ends and the system reboots only after this buffer (?) empties itself. The audio grunge is gone, and so is the audio delay on startup. Before, when I started psdr, I often got no audio out for about 15 seconds, even though everything looked normal. Can someone tell me why, when you remove psdr, it can't remove everything, or at least make that an option rather then spending 8 hours digging through windows settings to be able to see and be authorized to remove files and folders? Windows 7 does not make it easy at all. I actually went back to a restore point when I first loaded psdr, then had to delete stuff manually as I had a different 3000 back then. I had issues with empty folders for the driver hidden someplace, so the install did not install the driver since it showed the folder. Since I went back to an early restore point, windows search worked, and showed all the files. In windows 7, if you turn search off in services, it really does not seem to work. For stubborn uninstalls it is often a good idea to boot your system in Safe Mode, then do the manual deletes from there. Otherwise, the system may be booting with drivers or other software that is "in use" by the system and can't be deleted. Even though you uninstalled PSDR, there may still have been active drivers left behind. 73 k0dan -Original Message- From: Brett Gazdzinski Sent: December 21, 2011 10:08 PM To: flex Reflector Subject: [Flexradio] got it fixed. Well, after a good solid 8 hours of doing battle with windows 7, I managed to remove most of the files, and after lots more work, got psdr installed again. I have bought several bare computer power supply boards from Mouser/Digikey/others which have 24/12/5V DC outputs with decent current. Think they've been in the $20-$30 range. Have also had to buy a project box and nickel-dime hardware to install/package/connectorize them, but they have worked well and were well-worth the cost of prefab PS versus building one from scratch. Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500 Question
If you have too hot a mic make sure you don't have MIC BOOST selected (Setup/Audio). Also make sure the mic gain on the Mixer window isn't pushed up to high. If you use the Transmit EQ, make sure the left-side slider is not pushed all the way up (in fact you can use the EQ slider as a mic attenuator). The the Flex WIKI article for further audio adjustments. With all these adjustments, it's a good idea to start them all at 30-50%, the make adjustments from the start of the audio chain working further down the chain. None of the sliders should be max'd or min'd. Once you have it all set, go back and run thru the setup again making fine adjustments. When done be sure to SAVE your transmit profiles, also make/save multiple copies of your database. It's also a good idea to print screenshots of each of your menu pages, so if you have to do this all again a year from now, you have some record of what you set up. Re: [Flexradio] Setting up DSP Noise Reduction on PSDR 2.2.3
Very interesting Leif... So you have any of these sound bytes available online? I had a few "QRM/QRN" sites which had noise samples bookmarked, but the URL's are no longer any good. There are one or two noises here that drive me crazy. One sounds like fairly common hash noise, but with the Flex Panadaptor you can easily see that it has a periodic pattern to it. My killing power at my QTH I have concluded that it does not originate from my location, however I can't tell if it's in the area or is being propagated via long skip...or if it is ionospheric noise (it does seem to originate from northwest-north-northeast so might be over the pole? This noise source is so regular and predictable I'm sure a NB could reduce/eliminate it. However when I try the NB1/NB2 in PSDR, the noise improves initially, but then other noise in the SDR passband causes the entire passband to degrade when the NB is onit only takes a few seconds to prefer the unprocessed noise. Another noise source has a kind of growling heterodyne sound...I have heard this before with power supply noise (battery chargers) but again I know this noise is not originating here. Maybe close by, but I have not been able to determine where. I don't know if this noise source would be as easy to eliminate, however a sense antenna into R2, and using the ESC Enhanced Signal Clarity, might be able to reduce the noise by phase shift. In my close-in neighborhood, we (thankfully!) do not have BPL or ADSL, so whatever is here is of another source. I would offer to send you off-the-air recordings, but the WAV files PSDR creates are huge and not well-suited to sending via email. 73 dan k0dan -Original Message- From: Leif Asbrink Sent: November 04, 2011 04:34 PM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Setting up DSP Noise Reduction on PSDR 2.2.3 "K0DAN" wrote: You're right, there's many types of noise. Re: [Flexradio] Setting up DSP Noise Reduction on PSDR 2.2.3
You're right, there's many types of noise. A few (for example ignition pulse) is easily handledbut that damn propagation frying noise, power supplies, splatter, etc., are another matter altogether. "Noise", at least to the ear and human acoustics, is subjective anyway. Older ears and brains (and left ear does not equal right ear) may have peculiar frequency curves, suffer from tinnitus, and not perform very well with even basic acoustics under the best of environments. Add to that a hamshack with unknown speakers, headphones, room acoustics, transceiver capabilities, etc., etc., and you really have a 3-ring circus. In a way, it's amazing that modern DSP can do as much as it does, but at the end of the day, DSP is not a panacea. I keep looking for that silver bullet, but never find it. In fact, most times I'd prefer to listen to the (signal + noise), rather than the (signal + noise + DSP). YMMV. 73 k0dan = I wonder if some of the confusion may be between the different types of 'noise'. The wideband thermal type is what NR is intended to reduce, while pulse type QRN would be handled by the NB. The later can be handled quite well with the right approach. Re: [Flexradio] Setting up DSP Noise Reduction on PSDR 2.2.3
This thread has had many good points. I have been underwhelmed with most Noise Blankers, DSP's, Noise Reducers, ANF's, etc. They work a little, but most seem to create as many problems as they solve. This is my experience with Flex as well as some recent Yaesu, Kenwood, Icom, etc. rigs. Maybe our expectations of SDR are exaggerated in this arena, but that is a philosophical discussion. In any event: The DSP menu has 4 adjustments for NR, 4 adjustments for ANF, each for the two Noise Blankers, and there may be some other tweaks scattered through the menus. The mouse-drag-over provides a very scant description of most of these adjustmentsbut I have not seen any Knowledge Base or WIKI with suggestions how to tweak these. You are right that the memory & processing power of the host PC has got to be a a big factorso if I have a 486 clunker, or an i7 8-core screamer, how do I best use my PSDR for NR, NB, ANF, etc.? And of course there are the sample size vs buffer size choices, as well as the AGC-T discussions (which are well documented). 73 k0dan -Original Message- From: Bill Ackerman Sent: November 02, 2011 10:20 AM To: Al K0VM ; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Setting up DSP Noise Reduction on PSDR 2.2.3 Part of the problem may be a matter of PC processing power forreal-time noise removal. Re: [Flexradio] Setting up DSP Noise Reduction on PSDR 2.2.3
Brian you make a key point. I have yet to find a radio (and I use many, both modern and boatanchor) that have "noise reduction" which really improves things. Yes, occasionally engine impulse noise, the new Flex TNF's are certainly outstanding for heterodynes and maybe some adjacent splatter, sometimes noise blankers help, but to my ears, most of the "technology fixes" take away more than they add (or they add more than they take away?). I still cannot figure out a good setting for the Flex NF, NB1 and NB2 (and there's sure a lot of menu settings), ditto the NR and ANF functions. I would be more disappointed, but I have had the same experiences with for example Kenwood TS200, Yaesu FT1000MP, Icom IC706iiG, several "DSP speakers", and numerous boatanchors. The more you try to improve the S/N:N, the more you bastardize the sound. This is pretty subjective...some people use headphones, some speakers, some stereo systems, everyone has different hearing capabilities, etc., etc., it all becomes very subjective. Personally, I don't like the "sound" of DSP.to much bubbly echo & reverberation, artifacts, etc. I like the how the Flex NB's kill the ever-present frying noise, but the NB's eventually start to distort the recovered signal to the point that I'd prefer the impulse noise (cure is worse than the disease). Maybe one day we will see a more effective NR/NB system, but I'm afraid for now the AGC-T trick (and a pair of good ears) is the best "processing power" we have. 73 dan k0dan Now, insofar as Flex's NR implementation is concerned, I have to admit that, even after 3 years of fiddling with it, I have never found any combination of settings that seem to make it usable. (I have found lots of settings that make it worse than useless though!) I and others have asked the question here repeatedly about suggested settings of NR but we never get anything useful. Other implementations of NR on other radios I have used seem to me to work a lot better. Regardless, I find that *all*implementations of NR seem less useful to me than just setting the RF-gain/AGC-T and AF-gain properly. After many minutes of fiddling I always find that I finally converge on turning off NR or (on other radios) DSP. But that is me. Re: [Flexradio] External Audio Processing Question
Bob: Short recordings are one way to do it, but they are not "real time". When tweaking audio, you want to experiment with your settings (without causing QRM) and adjust them on the fly. Also, the recorder may introduce unexpected variables which are hard to trace. First and foremost you want to set an aux receiver (be it F5K R2 or other) to same AGC setting, filter width, etc. The Flex 5K R2 is good, but I have found that a quality external analog receiver (I use an RA6790GM) is totally independent of the Flex/PC, is "real-time" and will truly show you what you sound like on the air. If you don't have a stand-alone receiver, by all means use the F5K R2. The F5K R2 can do a decent job but it is a little distracting because of latency & processing delays (you will always hear some echo). This can be mitigated by carefully tweaking your sampling rate, buffer sizes, etc. A fast multi-core PC also helps reduce latency. Headphones are a good start because they help mitigate feedback. Ultimately you should use a 2nd receiver with a nice big speaker and decent audio amp to listen to your transmitted audioand just put up with the feedback and latency. I would not recommend setting drive to 0. Hook up a good dummy load and initially set your Flex to, say, 5 watts RF output and adjust as you see fit. When things sound right, bring it up to, say, 50 watts, and ultimately 100W or whatever full output you use. If the audio stays stable you are probably there. And then can also add your amplifier if you run QRO. After you tweak it all in the dummy load, it's time for on-air tests. These can be done with minimal QRM by doing your testing on a dead band (eg 160M during daytime). If you have a friend who knows your voice characteristics, have him critique your audio. Make sure he understands the issues, has a receiver which can go as wide as your transmitting mode, and then only trust his judgment so far! You may wish to be heard with a little more bass sound or crispy highs, your friend may not like that. It's up to you! (Perhaps this is the point at which you start making recordings of your audio?) Finally, if you haven't read it, take a look at the WIKI article and use the steps recommended as a guideline: http://flexradiowiki.com/frsradoiowiki/index.php?title=Setting_Audio_Gain Good luck, have fun, and 73 dan k0dan PS While I do use an external mixer and processor, I am getting away from the extra hardware. The Flex and its bag of tricks can do a really great job of optimizing SSB and AM...so much so that any further "value added" from the external devices is debatable (I just know someone's gonna beat me up on this one...!) -Original Message- From: Bob K. Re: [Flexradio] AF slider seems to Pan
Not sure I fully understand what you're encountering, and you don't say if you're running F5K with R2? If the latter, it is best (IMHO) to set the R1 volume pan to 100% left channel and R2 volume 100% pan to right channel. Then, in the "Multi-RX" window, set both audio gain sliders (the vertical ones) to same position, then set R1 slider full left and R2 slider full right. Make sure your Equalizer levels and freq curves are set how you like them, and same with with your Mixer levels. Now, see if that "panning" is still happening. If it's working correctly (i.e. no pan unless you select pan), EXPORT a copy of your database and save it where you can retrieve it if you need to. Also, check parameters and SAVE each Transmit Profile you use. (I don't think the audio and pan sliders are saved with the Transmit Profiles, but it can't hurt to save them). I have found that each PSDR upgrade results in the loss of certain subtle PSDR settings (for example, the sliders and sometimes pieces of the Transmit Profiles, the mic and CPDR/DEXP, etc.). It may help to use K9DUR's SDR data transfer utility, but I prefer to rebuild the entire database on each upgrade, there's just too much subtle stuff that can be missed. The big trick is not overlook something "subtle" during an upgrade, only to find a big mystery weeks after-the-fact! Great tutorial, Tim! I have been using TNF for some time (and am blown away by it) but the video & white paper taught me a few new tricks. Over the past few days, I have been told multiple times that my signal is strong but my voice is very soft (). When I move my face to within an inch or two of the microphone, I am told the readability is now great, even though the "Mic" TX meter is bouncing up to +60 dBm. So I have been operating that way and it seems to be working. It appears that the TX meter is not giving an accurate reading for my particular configuration. The only difference between what I am doing and the instructions in the above link is that I am adjusting the TX Gain in the Audio/VAC panel of the PowerSDR Setup rather than Mic level control. It is possible that going through the Windows audible drivers rather than directly into the Flex3000 could be making a such difference in the TX meter? Re: [Flexradio] Flex not keying amp.
I am not sure this is the case, but I “think” it is? I usually leave The Flex and PSDR running for days at a time. Occasionally there is glitch or power loss or whatever and the PC reboots, ungracefully, without PSDR/Flex going thru the proper shut down procedure. (This could also mean that DDUTIL goes away and comes back under less than “proper” sequence.) When it all powers back up, Flex/PSDR/DDUTIL are reloaded (sometimes with whatever database is top of the heap in the directory, other times by importing a recently-saved database), and sometimes it is later discovered that there is no PTT for the amplifier, and rechecking the ANT1 box fixes the problem. My gut feel is that it is a PSDR issue, not DDUTIL, but the whole issue is too ghostly to be certain of anything. Uncertain what causes the “uncheck” issue, but I suspect it is related to a database reload. I do not believe this was an issue before approx. PSDR 2.1x and almost certainly not before V2.x. Re: [Flexradio] Split beyond the radio window
If the DX is beyond the passband of your radio (196, 96, 48 khz...depends on radio & buffer settings) you will not be able to use SPLIT/Multi-RX to hear both your TX freq and the DX freq, but if you have R2 then you can make R2 go anywhere and you can hear the DX on one receiver while you transmit using very wide split (ST0R is the perfect example!). Start by listening to the DX on VFO-A, enable R2, set A>B, then adjust VFO-B to where the DX is listening (or use your CAT/spotlog to set the QSX). Pay attention to whether R2 is on R1-TAP, a separate antenna, etc., and be aware that the is no built-in protection of R2 for high-RF levels so you need to be careful you don't pump QRO into R2! Also try to set your AF gain, AGC speed, and AGC-T sliders about the same (so the signals are somewhat balanced), also try to bring R1 audio to one speaker and R2 audio to another. Adjust the PAN cotnrols accordingly. There is a WIKI article at http://flexradiowiki.com/frsradoiowiki/index.php?title=Setting_Audio_Gain which addresses mostly TX adjustment, but does make some mention of receive audio routing. I can send you some screenshots if you wish. Re: [Flexradio] Fragmentation when using FM on RX2 with Squelch On
I don't have the V/U module, but also get the choppy audio here if I listen to HF (say, 20M) on R1 and then on R2 go to FM mode on 10 or 6M. Same experience as yours, the audio goes choppy when the R2 squelch is engaged, and CPU activity also goes up. It happens in reverse too: If I put the 6M/10M FM onto R1 and the HF on R2, as soon as the R1 squelch is engaged, the audio goes choppy. So it doesn't appear to be a V/U module issue. I think Flex is aware of this and has it on the list. 73 Dan K0DAN - Original Message - From: "Phil A. So far, so good. Then I turn the squelch up on RX2 to take out the FM white noise and the white noise goes away but the HF side start to frag the audio. I turn the squelch down, white noise is back but the audio is fine again. I also noticed the same CPU spike when activating squelch that has been mentioned here already. Of course the intermittents are in the connectors and ends of the wires...cut off a few feet and clean up the connectors and you're good to go! Sorry for off-topic post but I think on this reflector I have been referred to a site which will accept BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) dump files and auto-diagnose them? Re: [Flexradio] No RF out on SSB but RF out in other modes - Problemsolved
Brad: YAY!!! Glad you found it! The same thing happened to me at some time in the past (sorry I couldn't recall the details for you), but as I retraced your steps I definitely had Deja Vu. My lesson learned back then (and reaffirmed now) is that there are MANY little pieces of the audio chain. Our old experience of plug in a mic and set gain is not valid. Each piece of the chain needs to be explored (just to get audio through it) and then each piece of the chain really needs to be tweaked in order to optimize audio for DX, or ragchew, or custom TX profile, or different mic's, etc., etc. To attempt microphone "plug and play" with the Flex is not really a good idea. Very glad you now have blasting audio levels and hope you can now tame them to your satisfaction. 73 Dan K0DAN - Original Message - From: "Brad A. In the Mixer Form , the input selected was Microphone. Since I am using a balanced mic input, I just checked that box and unchecked the other and viola! Measurable RF output (the power meter needle bounced off the peg on voice peaks). I set the voice peaks to about -1 dB with the mic gain . Final mic gain is 48. After having set up the previous version of PSDR correctly, I obviously did not set up the new form properly when I upgraded to 2.0.2 from the previous STABLE version, 1.x. I was especially careful to correctly install all software, firmware and drivers. Why I assumed the previous database would be preserved when the reflector and the Flex web site clearly said otherwise, and when I forced a new database as well, I do not know. Re: [Flexradio] No RF Out on SSB but RF out in other modes
Hi Mike... I guess I didn't fully understand your problem. I have not had that problem, but on rare occasion have had something flakey happen (no chronic problems), and doing the exact same recovery drill you do fixes whatever was weird. Doing that reset drill results in the FireWire going away, then being restarted, and the most-recent PSDR database being reloaded too. I could speculate on what is happening after the reset drill, but I'd only be speculating. It does seem to point to the FireWire and/or database, however. The question is: what changes from the "good morning" to the "bad afternoon"? Sorry I can't be of further help. I leave the computer on and PSDR running (but stopped). I come back in the afternoon. Hit START. I start to talk and I can see RF going out on the external PEP reading watt meter for about 2 words, then nothing. The only control i have touched is the START button. The only way to recover is: I hit START (to stop). Kill PowerSDR Power OFF the radio wait till windows sees the unit is gone Power ON wait till the unit is seen by Windoows Start PowerSDR Hit START At that point it may or may not work. Re: [Flexradio] Mic
I have a nice Electrovoice RE10, RE16, and 664 I would consider selling. Also a number of D104's. I agree with other posts that Heil is a very popular and overpriced; you don't need to buy a "ham" microphone to get great audio and plug & play compatibility (or worst case, you or someone solders a new connector on a mic). There are some very good products, used & new, at great prices, if you shop the music, public address, and stage market. The Electrovoices I mention above are from this marketplace (the D104's not). The Flex has so much audio processing power, just about any mic can be made to sound good, it just takes a little reading & experimentation. Re: [Flexradio] Rx2 Noise Hump on 160M
Harry... I have been plagued (on numerous bands) by intermittent pulse noise and "humps" across the spectrum. In my case the humps were 10+ kHz wide and were pretty evenly spaced around 75-80 kHz between peaks. I realize you're saying that you see problems on R2 but not R1, and that this problem was not always there...but the fact that it is a "new" issue makes me wonder what might be in your environment and outside the flex. At this time I only use R1-TAP for my radio, but I can choose from a coax-fed rotatable log periodic or a 260' fed with 600 ohm open feed. I could only notice the pulses & humps on the log periodic so I thought the source was either close to the LPDA or was being picked up due to the direction the LPDA was pointed. I thought this was some kind of spread spectrum, spent a lot of chasing NIC cards, routers, WIFI, etc., to no avail. Was starting to suspect leaking cable TV service or data on powerlines. I dismissed my barn, which is 120' from the shack, and adjacent to the tower and LPDA. Other than lights, the barn has no electrical devices in it, so that can't be the source of the noise. Just for grins, I popped the breaker to the barn, and the noise went away! Whoa. Inspected the barn and discovered I had two battery maintenance systems hooked up to my riding mowers. We tend to forget all the electrical appliances we have out there. I reset the breaker and pulled the plug on one of the battery maintenance systems. The humps went away. I pulled the plug on the other battery maintenance system and the pulses went away. Whoa. I think I would rather live with dead tractor batteries than all that QRN/QRM (at least until it's mowing season). Your mileage may vary, but I think those humps may be signatures of some type of smart charger or power supplytake a look thru your property, and see what's live when you have R1 and R2 active. Re: [Flexradio] New 5000A User - TX Audio (severe distortion) Issues
Since you've done so much troubleshooting and yet still have the problem, you may not wish to make assumptions about the Heil cable...yeah, it's probably OK, but you never know til you either Ohm it out or build a test cable. Or try a different mic + cable. Also are you using the rear panel balanced mic input? This bypasses the audio preamp which is in-circuit on the front panel jack...might give you improved results. dt - Original Message - From: "Bradley Feldman" To: "'K0DAN'" ; Sent: Sunday, December 05, 2010 12:21 PM Subject: RE: [Flexradio] New 5000A User - TX Audio (severe distortion) Issues I just tried stringing up a 30 dipole, new coax, etc instead of using the miracle MMD (which is an end fed antenna). I am not familiar with Teamviewer, nor have I tried remoting FLEX. Re: [Flexradio] Speaker project (was the 'bose speakers')
A build-our-own speaker project is ineed a worthy and interesting project. With that said, I have never had the time nor inclination to do so...for my home theater interests, I buy comercial products. For my ham radio interests, I have gotten VERY good results from visiting Salvation Army, Goodwill, and other thrift storesthey always carry some inventory of stereo tuner/amplifiers, speakers, etc. Some of these are junk, and sometimes you will be surprised when you find pretty decent stuff (I once got a pair of big JBL speakers for $50...woodwrok was a little messed up, but the speakers sounded great). Generally the prices on this stuff are pretty low...and they are plug & play, and with a right/left balance control you can mix two audio inputs. If you don't have great apeakers, the addition of a small subwoofer will make ESSB or plate modulated AM on 75M sound really good. This is not audiophile (audiophool?) quality, but is VERY good for ham applications, and might be another option for FLEX (and other) operators who want to have some decent speakers and audio. It's a case of apples and oranges: are homebrew or commercial speakers intended for the hamshack, or studio monitors, or high-end home theater? Once size does not fit all. BTW, I have two thrift-store tuner/amplifiers in the hamshack...one drives a pair of old Yamaha bookshelf speakers, the other drives a pair of the old Radio Shack "Optimus" bookshelf speakers. Both have a small subwoofer...the audio is really good. Would I use this for my home theater? Probably not, but works great in the hamshack. I use ZIP cord to feed the speakers, I have no idea if theyr are "shielded" or not (what does this mean, anyway?), and ditto with the tuner/amplifiers (both Yamaha in my case)...I have never had RFI with these devices, and I often run full limit QRO and have both coax and ladderline feeders in the shack. The 'audioguy' always has the time for speaker projects, but I'll concede that you may not. :-) The size - yes, even the "small" version may be bigger than a pair of micro PC speakers. Once cab I was tinkering with tonight is 6x6x6" internal volume and made from 1/2" MDF. They can get bigger and smaller. Well shielded from RF - That will be attended to in the separate amplifier section. Both for goes-in and goes-out, since the amp module I'm working with is Class D and can generate some hash unless put in a metal box and bypassed/choked. If someone comes up with an inexpensive linear amp module, kit or design that meets spec we can look at that too. Class D is nice because it can be tucked away in a diecast box without heat issues. Sound quality vs size - not sure what you mean there. The point of doing this is to build a first rate speaker. Unless you're talking trade-off, which is a matter of preference. You may prefer small for convenience. I'm a believer that where speakers are concerned, QRO is the way to go, although a 7" cube isn't what I'd call all THAT large. Price - It would be tough to match the $69 you mention, yes. The smaller design may do it, we'll certainly try. 73, Jim, N7CXI (going where angels fear to tread) Dudley Hurry wrote: Jim, There are just a few issues with the speaker project as far as I am concerned, for the Flex. . Re: [Flexradio] Vista-Win7 upgrade
I did a similar upgrade from VISTA to WIN7. In fact, I didn't even BOOT the brand new (HP) VISTA machine until I received the WIN7 upgrade, so the upgrade was basically onto a "clean" VISTA OS, and like your experience, the upgrade went pretty well. This is a fairly speedy i7 quad core with 8GB RAM and 1TB driveHowever, I am having several problems/mysteries. And this is all before any ham & FLEX apps are installed! I set myself up as ADMINISTRATOR but the system still will not allow me to do certain tasks. I have turned User Access Control (UAC) down to its lowest setting without being OFF. I am listed in USERS as an Administrator, but still get pop-ups telling me I'm not authorized to run some apps, but then if I continue I can run them, but sometimes totally denied access to certain apps. One of these was CHKDSK, which I tried to run today...had a mysterious BSOD (my first), and the new Event Viewer is extremely crypticthere was some mention about a disk issue so I figured a CHKDSK wouldn't hurt (from Command Prompt) but it won't let me run it. There's a few others ( can't recall now) which I'm also denied...don't think I have "real" ADMIN rights? I can right-click some icons which offer to elevate access rights, but these appear not to do anything, or not be permanent. Also their menus are a bit contradictory. Today's BSOD was disturbing. Never could find the data dump; Event Viewer has become really complex & bloated, I don't know how to analyze it. No new drivers or software in the past 4-5 days but the PC decided to puke this a.m. for no apparent reason. I can't make this new PC exchange files on the LAN, even though I have the workgroups set up right and have C:\ set for shares. The new PC is visible on the LAN, and vice versa, but no file transfers. There are more nagging issues, but that's all I rcan remember off the top of my head. I maybe can wade thru hours of blogs and "HOW TO" fixes, but there's more to my life than calming down this new stallion PC. I don't know if these issues are due to a VISTA-WIN7 upgrade, bugs in the new W7 OS, poor choices of X86 apps on my part, etc. Has anyone been there & done that? I'd sure like to get this "tool" running so I can play with ham radio again! Anyway, bottom line is that the in-place upgrade went pretty smoothly. The upgrade advisor indicated that com0com would have a compatibility issue. Pressing on ahead, when Win7 finally came up (about 90 minutes of churning), everything looked pretty good, except that none of PowerSDR, VAC, MixW and com0com would run due to various complaints. However, after removing these packages, reinstalling and reconfiguring them to their former states, everything looks peachy. So Win7 upgrade success--just thought I'd pass that on. The only lingering glitch was that after removing and reinstalling MixW, it evidently went into demo-expired mode (I had had about a week left), repeating the word "trial" at regular intervals in the audio stream. So that requires a purchase decision sooner than I'd planned. Re: [Flexradio] Fwd: More Flex in contesting
I appreciate all the FLEX/LOGic/logger feedback. I may have failed to mention I am not yet a FLEX owner, kind of thinking the conversion will be sometime 1Q10, but I have been reading the reflectors the past few months and am getting a feel for what to expect. Am kinda hot to trot but also hoping for a simple implementation process, shack remodeling, and interface with existing subsystems, logging, etc. FLEX + LOGic users who have emailed me seem to be about 50/50 that LOGic did/didn't make the transition. My druthers are that I don't change but it is a reassuring to know that there's a bunch of people who found a workab le solution (and free!) to their problems. Thanks for the info folks...hope to be on the air with y'all soon! 73 dan k0dan - Original Message - From: "NU8Z" To: "'George Steube'" ; "'K0DAN'" ; "'dan edwards'" Cc: "'flex list'" Sent: Friday, December 11, 2009 8:59 AM Subject: RE: [Flexradio] Fwd: More Flex in contesting I was also a long time user of Logic. Started back with Logic 1 or 2 (can't remember). I think Logic is an excellent logging program. If it were not for the issues ( I had) with interfacing the Flex with it, I would likely still be using it. Now that being said, because of the issues I gave DXLabs a try. I made the conversion about 3 years ago and have not looked back. All went smooth. I did lose some of my QSO notes from Logic in the transfer, but made no special effort to save them. There are some adif data massaging programs that could be used to maybe prevent that from happening. I made the transition knowing that I could always go back to Logic and put more effort into resolving the issue with the flex interfacing. When I first made the change to DxLabs I had a bit of "switchers remorse", but that lasted about 2 days! Then I was hooked. The bottom line is that DX Labs is an amazing program. ( and it's free - with incredible product support) Regardless of what radio I was using, If I knew what I know now about this program I would have made the switch. How 'bout use a remotely-controlled X-10 power module to cycle your radio? I operate a full remote station and I'm thinking about using an RC servo to drive a remote "button pusher" - I'd like to have some clue about the torque required as that affects the price of the servo in no small degree. I have a very simple servo driver using a 555 timer that could make for a very simple RS-232 operated remote "switch". Anyone have suitable equipment to measure the required force? Thanks Stu K6TU PS: Yes, I could add a relay across the switch to apply the necessary pulse but I'd like to keep my (nearly new) Flex under warranty! Also, wedging the power button in doesn't work for me as this causes the rear PTT line to be inop after powering up via the PSU!
