Re: [Flexradio] flex 1500 and Acer Aspire One Netbook and Toshiba Satellite notebook

2010-08-08 Thread Ray J

To run a digital program on a normal radio you need 2 things. the
digi software, and the hardware/computer interface box.

More often than not, you will also want several different digi
programs for this as well.. its not a SDR only thing

For a sdr radio you need 3 things, digi program, Virtual Audio Cable
program, and a virtual comport program..

After doing it a few times.. its easier than trying to reach around and
remember where to plug the cables into the back of the analog radio.

"I'd say a dual core is needed if you want to do
>> more than SSB"

yes this is one problem at the flex radio site.. I searched around, I
could not find nothing about a recommended computer listed on their main
pages.. other than buy one from Neil. searching the Knowledge base came
up with a decent reference

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50063.aspx?Keywords=computer+requirements

Along with recommending stuff, they should be listing NON recommended
hardware.. stuff people should try to stay away from.

Like netbooks and older low end laptops. atom processors..

Also should push testing with DPC latency checker.

Flex really needs to make/find a way to have a test package for
computers, some kind of a benchmark style program..Games have them
nowdays.. checks out the system to see if its satisfactory.. i don't
see a easy way to test the usb/fireware interface with out hardware
attached though.

I'd also say that unless you want to only run SSB with the radio.. you
still have five other pieces of software to load and a few evenings of
tweaking to do. And then, I'd say a dual core is needed if you want to do
more than SSB.

I won't post my true impressions of the radio to this list, however, as I
want to remain on it.

I enjoyed following the PB SVN development, anxiously awaiting SVN updates and playing with the software. To then be shut out when the beta 2.0 finally came out was a disappointment.
It seems logical to me that if 2.0 was based on the last SVN, that some minor oversight, rather than a large BUG broke it in the 2.0 beta release. Anyway, just wish I could continue in the Beta 2.0... process.

Gary,
I would guess that something we did on FLEX-1500 development caused the problem with SoftRock support. We will not take the time before official release of 2.0 to do any troubleshooting on SoftRock support. I hope you understand that supporting FlexRadio products takes precedence over supporting non-revenue third-party hardware products in our software.

It means that your bug report for a problem with Softrock hardware has been
deferred until PowerSDR 2.0 is released that supports FlexRadio hardware.
FlexRadio has to spend its resources fixing the software for their products

Re: [Flexradio] sdr-1000 problem

2010-07-14 Thread Ray J
First thing, have you tried resetting the database?.. this is
important with the 1000.. there is no information from the radio like
the newer hardware.. everything is stored in the database. one little
hickup and it will show strange affects.

I think the clicking you hear is the automatic antenna tuner.(if there
is one?)

What are the computers..? hopefully a minimum of 2.5 gig Pentium 4. and
win XP.

Are you sure you have the parallel port settings right.. have you
looked through the help sections? that sounds like the problem here..
Has the radio ever worked on either of the computers before??

This was becoming a big problem at the end of the sdr-1000 sales
because of computer hardware changes affecting how parallel ports
works. Too bad i don't think the flex usb cables are available anymore.
there is some rumors that certain usb adapters will work .. but i would
have to see it.. because most will not.

If you set up powersdr in demo mode with the fa-66 or the default card
there should be sound and stuff displayed in the pandadapter..

The problem Iam having with my sdr-1000 ,happens on both of my computers, while each is connected to the sdr-1000. , Iam using the fa-66 box, fire wire and parallel cable. I have reloaded power sdr 1.8.6 on both computers and also reloaded the fa-66 driver,on both. I have switched the parallel cable and the fire wire cable on both computers with new ones I had., with no change in the problem.

1. This is what happens, power up either computer ,no problem...by the way both computers have nothing but sdr software installed, per the manual, they are both dedicated machines to the radio.
2. turn on supply to the sdr-1000,but not turn on the front power switch..yet. I hear a low level clicking from the 1000,like a relay on/off on/off very low lever ,but there.

3. turn the power switch on the 1000 all seems ok, don't know if the clicking
is still going on,too much fan noise.
4. click on powersdr, the first time , booths, and the 1000 goes thru all its self checks and then I tell power sdr about the 1000, tuner, 100 watt pa etc and finally we end up with the power sdr screen on the monitor.
5. I click on the screen power button , seems a bit flaky, but finally turns the power sdr screen on and I get a flat green line across the pan adaptor and NO audio from the speakers.

6. power down the computer and the rig, re boot the computer, turn on the 1000
click the power sdr icon, power sdr boots ,but do not hear relays click as the
boot up continues, screen comes up click on power sdr button , same result ,
green line across pan adaptor ,no sound. again the powersdr screen seems a bit
flaky. I went threw the whole manual can't find any wrong settings in power
sdr, checked the parallel card settings on device manager , show the standard
default.
My first guess is the 1000 has a problem and needs service. second guess would be a problem with the fa-66? don't know how to check that further.
both computers work fine with my 3000, if I set them up to run the 3000.

also I just turned on my power supply to the 1000 ,power switch "off" on the 1000, hear the constant low level clicking.

I was going to set the 1000 up for one of the young guys in our club and get him started on sdr radio,so want to go forward with getting the problem fixed.
any help on this ,would be grateful.

thanks

Re: [Flexradio] flex 1500 fantastic

2010-07-09 Thread Ray J

U seem to be forgetting the the 1500 needs a computer to run the
radio. Most of them draw more power than the IC-7000. And are bigger.

Then u have the problem of powering your laptop/computer.. Is that
going to run on a 12VDC?

Most amplifiers finals are made to run on 14 volts.. less than this
and you get less power out.. I doubt you will get away from this.. The
bigger problem is how linear is it at lower voltage.. Your ssb is more
like FM probably.

You can get a voltage booster to help with these problems. but then on
batteries, you lose watts faster. http://www.powerstream.com/dc2.htm

than my present IC-7000, with the AH-4 auto-antenna tuner. For one thing,
the IC-7000 suffers from a well known input DC voltage issue; In my case,
I get about 65 Watts output from fresh batteries, which drops to about
50 Watts,
as the days go on. Also, the standby/receive current draw of the
IC-7000 is a
LOT higher than the Flex-1500. (In receive, the IC-7000 takes about two
or so
Amperes, as I recall.) In transmit mode, the Flex-1500's current draw
would
possibly be higher than what the voltage-deprived, current-sucking
IC-7000, but

this would ONLY be when I actually transmitted. As such, I could afford to
 LISTEN a lot mor

Re: [Flexradio] Fault trouble with Alpha 8410

Zero is probably not low enough. try -1 or -2. there is probably
overshoot that is not showing up on the meter..

Alpha quotes the max drive levels at 50-55 watts, so the power must be
a little higher than you are thinking?

fast peak-reading wattmeter (LP100A). Most of the time the power peaks
are in the 10-15 watt range, but on some words the peaks are much
higher, 30-40 watts. I turned up the mic gain to get 0 dB ALC readings
and turned down the drive to compensate, thinking that would resolve the
problem. It helped but didn't completely do the trick. Next I
decreased the ALC attack time to 1 ms. That doesn't help either, nor
does changing the ALC Decay and Hang times.

The Alpha fault-detection circuits are very fast acting. I complained
to them about it, but to no avail. They seem to think it should be that

As a matter of personal preference, am running an earlier version of

I believe the delay might be lessened by using the smallest possible

Is has been in the King of Spain SSB contest.
We have participated in Multi-Multi with 14 operators and 4 running
stations.
Some conclusiones:
-First the good points:
All operators have talked about his excelent selectivity. The FLEX station
has been used only on 40 meters.
40 meters in this contest is very very saturated this is becouse the great
selectivity of FLEX5000 has been great for us.
100% stable. We haven't had problems with stability using 1.18.6.
All operators have liked panadapter (of course).
We have had very good audio and signal reports.
Excelent looking for multipliers.

-Bad points (for me):
In a multi-multi contest, monitor is very very important. We haven't could
use it becouse the delay. All operators told the same: MONITOR is needed in
a contest.
Powersdr needs a FULL-LOCK button. NOT only the frequency, we need a
LOCK-ALL buttons. Involuntarily some operator have clicked on powersdr
buttons and we had some problems with this. Changind mode and some other
settings. In a contest, the non-flex operator must have powersdr locked to
prevent involuntari changes.
Some operator were looking for buttons, but the didn't find them. This
wasn't a problem for me.
The same PC (Mac Book Pro) was used for PowerSDR and Win-Test.

What do you think?
How did you solve the monitor problem?
And what about the lock-all feature?

Thank's a lot.

I routinely work people with my sdr-1000, on good e-skip, that things

Re: [Flexradio] database update

2010-06-04 Thread Ray J

I don't know fore sure about that, but I think its been this way for ever..

I have always noticed that if you change a setting, and it crashes the
program. The setting will be reverted to the original when reopening
the program. Including ALL other changes made that session.

It seems to me, that it doesn't save the updated database till powersdr
has been closed properly.

If I have PSDR open and set up controls for a particular mode and then do an 'export database', change some more stuff and exit PowerSDR, then restart PSDR and import the previously exported database, PSDR
reverts to the setting that existed when I first started PSDR. It acts
like the 'Export database" function makes a copy of the database.xml file that existed when the session was started and does not reflect any control changes made during the session before the export. ( I am running WinXP Pro SP3) It further appears that the database.xml file is not updated until PSDR is closed.

If you change a database value, that value is immediately stored to the database unless
there is a "save" function controlling them, such as the TX Profile settings.

Can you provide a "real world" example of what you are trying to accomplish?

Re: [Flexradio] RF Amplifier possibilities for thesoon-to-be-released Flex-1500?

2010-06-03 Thread Ray J

There is a attenuator but is only for a few watts..

Yeah its foolish to think that you will always remember to turn the
power back.. Or remember to change critical settings back after a
database reset.. Even more important to have stuff foolproof if you will
ever have guest operators running the radio.

If u set the radio to 1 watt.. It should put out one watt..

There was just a lengthy discussion here the other day about how hard
it is to set up ssb for a certain lower power output.. cw is simple, but
dealing with mic gains and voice peaks throws a another set of problems
in..

Too bad they didn't fit a transverter jack on the 3000, but they fit one
on the tiny 1500.

I believe the Flex 3000 minimum is 1W so assuming 1W being key down or FM, then
SSB will be =<3W on peaks.. It will need attenuation of about 15db and hope I
remember to set / check / double check the output power before transmitting.
Well that is reasonable, a 100W rated RF switch kit is £22 UK, and just need a
10W rated 15db attenuator for the tx side... or I win the lottery and swap to a
5000 or add a 1500 without the xyl knowing.

Quite possibly like several of you, I have a Flex-1500 on order; -As this is a

level, when I am at a camp site. So far, I see two possible sources, a $400
store-bought one, or either of the two low cost, but KIT-FORM units.

What I'd REALLY LIKE TO SEE is an amplifier from FLEX-RADIO
(Maybe a Flex-1550?)

I can almost envision it... 75 to 100 Watts, optional built in
antenna tuner... (Wow.)

In my case, I want to make up a small "camping radio" to replace my
IC-7000, which is now installed in our small camper. The Flex-1500,
the 100-Watt amp from HF Projects, and my little LDG auto-antenna
tuner would do A LOT BETTER than my present IC-7000, with the AH-4
auto-antenna tuner. For one thing, the IC-7000 suffers from a well
known input DC voltage issue; In my case, I get about 65 Watts output
from fresh batteries, which drops to about

50 Watts,
as the days go on. Also, the standby/receive current draw of the IC-7000 is a
LOT higher than the Flex-1500. (In receive, the IC-7000 takes about two or so
Amperes, as I recall.) In transmit mode, the Flex-1500's current draw would
possibly be higher than what the voltage-deprived, current-sucking IC-7000, but
this would ONLY be when I actually transmitted. As such, I could afford to
LISTEN a lot more, with the Flex-1500/amp/tuner package!

The ($400 list) Tokyo High Power amplifier is only a 45 Watt (MAXIMUM)
unit, where the HF PROJECTS has two models, a 50-60 Watt (I think) one
and a

100 Watt
(More than 100 Watts, per the video I saw!) model. To me, $400 is a bit high

2010-06-02 Thread Ray J

Yeah Defiantly time for a newer computer..

IMHO its foolish to try run a $2700 computer based radio, on a
computer that most people have threw out along the curb by now.

Just for comparison

The 2.4ghz came out may of 2003 with 55 million transistors

The core 2 quads came out jan of 2008 with 800 million transistors
which easily run the flex hardware as hard as u can.

The newest intel Core-i7 6 core processors have 1.17 billion
transistors. which is way overkill for anything... lol

A very capable computer can easily be bought or built for less than 1/3
of the cost of the radio.

The computer is the most important part of the radio system here.
The black box that says Flexradio on it just sits there it doesn't do
much of the work at all..

So, I sadly decided to go back to 1.18, which looks miserable but works

Any suggestion on how to fix this? Thanks a lot in advance.

The average output power on ssb should only around 30 watts.. the radio

Tried resetting database, no difference.

Seems to happen regardless of any of the wire or yagi antennas which I

I have had the spurs on 6 meters for about 2 months now, and I figured it
was just local interference.

All gear is turned off except the rig and the computer (normal ops)

Re: [Flexradio] Powerline noise

can u find the noise? will the power company fix it?

Here in the states its illegal for the power company to interfere with

More often than not the power company does not know or is unable to
find the problem.
Usually if the ham can find the pole with a bad insulator or whatever
they are happy to fix it. as its going to save them from an outage
sooner or later..

well, ham radio deluxe and numerous other cat based programs, interface
with powerSDR just fine right now.. as does the existing transverter
interface scheme.

Probably more important to some, is what doesn't exist at all yet in the
program yet as far as we have seen. . the addition of auto repeater
offsets, DTMF, and pl tone encoding and decoding.. which i believe
some of the newest fm satellites are using..

rf performance wise.. the Icom rig won't even compare.. its just a
souped up 746..with some 910 parts dumped in. and i'm sure it's going
to push over $2500+.

One thing going for it, is 1.2ghz capability, (for a additional $500+)..
u still need to add 2.4 ghz rx for a couple of satellites..

I suspect the Flex-5000 is well-designed against RFI.

The cable connecting the Flex-Radio to the computer

It is the only low cost relay box I can find that works from a DB9 COM

It has 8 relays and 4 isolated inputs.
This relay box is available as a kit or fully assembled.
I purchased mine fully assembled and tested for about $130 including
shipping.
I did not buy the recommended 12 volt power supply because I already
owned a PS that will work.
This box needs 12 volts - not 13.8 volts - not 9 volts - it needs 12
volts - 12 volts.

My laptop has no parallel port - (my wife's desktop computer also has no
parallel port).
Parallel ports seem to be dead - many new motherboards don't have a
parallel port, and laptops have long abandoned providing parallel
ports. The USB/Parallel port adapters are only for printing and do not
show up as a real Parallel port.

The solution?
This CK1610 relay box!

It is now auto-band switching my SGC-500 amplifier.

Subject: [Flexradio] Trouble with RX1

Hi,

I have a Flex 5000A. Receiver 1 suddenly stopped working. I was using
the radio in the NAQP. At one point I looked up and RX1 wasn't picking
up anything (although I was still working people - apparently hearing
them on RX2). The noise floor shows up on the Panadapter, but it's as
if it was plugged into a dummy load. It doesn't matter which antenna
selection I use. RX2 works fine, but RX2 won't work either if I choose
the RX1 tap option in the antenna selection window. The transmitter
seems to be working fine on the ANT 1 port.

I have tried resetting the database. I also deleted both database.xml
and Wisdom and let PowerSDR rebuild them, but the problem doesn't
correct itself. All of the RX1 calibrations (using P) pass
the tests.

I have tried this using both of these configurations with the same
results:

Firewire driver 3.5.0.7171
Firmware 1.3.08
PowerSDR 1.18.3

Firewire driver 3.5.0.7171
Firmware 2.0.0.3
PowerSDR 1.19.3 SVN 3477

I was using the PowerSDR 1.18.3 configuration when the problem occurred.
Any ideas?

Thank you.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5K half-duplex AGC query

2010-01-04 Thread Ray J

isn't that what the "fast" AGC setting is for?

Tom Brown N4TAB wrote:
I've looked through the KB and Google searched using keywords but I
haven't located an answer to this query.

Since the 5K is a duplex radio, meaning, as I understand it, the RX is
not muted during TX, what happens to the RX AGC during/following TX?
For example, if the RX AGC has decay and hang values of 500 mS,
presumably the RX AGC would operate upon the large TX signal and the
decay and hang values would apply to any signals appearing at the
Antenna port, following release of the TX carrier (PTT). Is this correct?

If this *is* correct, then ARQ operation with fairly low RX signal
levels and rapid TX-RX turnaround would require a specific post-TX RX
AGC profile to keep the RX AGC from attacking the weak RX signals,
following TX. Is this correct? Additionally, that would also mean that
a useful AGC profile operating on the desired RX antenna signal would
not be possible, with the current PowerSDR configuration. Is this correct?

What I'm aiming at is a situation where the RX AGC is hit by the big
(Flex) TX signal and can't recover fast enough to allow the weaker
signal to be heard, owing to AGC timing.

Did I miss anything - is there a way to reset the RX AGC buffers
following a TX event (half-duplex)?

If this is a basic misconception on my part, or if I overlooked existing
information, I apologize.

Hi Tim,
I'm not sure if I understand the question. As far as I know, the 5000A
XVTR interface IF is always from 28 to 32 MHz (4 MHz bandwidth). If I
program one of the XVTR (VHF+) buttons from 432.0 to 436.0 MHz, I do not
get OOB warnings for the entire 4 MHz range, but if I program 222 to 225
MHz, then I get the OOB warnings I listed earlier. I assume that the
firmware must have a bug and is incorrectly reporting OOB for 222.250 to
223.400 MHz. I think it should be reporting "1.25M Repeater Inputs"
instead of OOB.

Subject: [Flexradio] 222 MHz transverter interface bugs?

I'm getting ready to try out a 222MHz transverter with my Flex 5000A
(PowerSDR 1.18.3, Firmware 1.3.0.8, Firewire Driver 3.5.0.7171). I've
programmed the XVTR settings for a begin frequency of 222.0 and an end
frequency of 225.0 (LO = 194 MHz). I'm getting Out Of Band whenever I
go to frequencies in the range 222.250 to 223.400 MHz and also from
224.980 and up. Unless something has changed recently, the US
allocation for this band is from 222.0 to 225.0 continuous. The local
222 repeater that I sometimes listen to is 223.980 out and 223.380 in
(out of band according to PowerSDR).
It appears that it will still transmit, even with the Out of Band
warning, but I need to hook up the spectrum analyzer to be sure. So
this is probably just a cosmetic bug.

Also, if I stop and close PowerSDR while I have the 222 MHz band
selected, and then restart it, the Band Buttons come up in HF mode, even
though the frequency is correct.

Has anyone else noticed either of these behaviors, or am I doing
something wrong?

Clay W7CE

This happened when I updated SVN PB-Pal , My power on the HF bands
went to 150 watts . I did the Ctrl Shift F to calibrate the power,
all calibrated fine until it got to 6m . At that point PSDR would
stop and shut down.

Reading the mail on the reflector, I read were all calibrating
need's to be done using the official release. Today I installed
Drivers,Firmware and PSDR from the Flex web page (front page) Doing
the power calibrate, all HF bands did fine, This time when it got to
6m, it did not shut down PSDR ... It just sat there and did nothing,
I could see a wave form in the filter bandwidth and the Mox tab was
highlighted . I Gave it may be 5 minutes before clicking X and stop
on PSDR

I tried this with 2 different OS, windows XP home and Windows 7 32
bit. their was no change with either,

So were did my 100 watts go on 6m ?

Yes I was in 96k and 1024

Yes I used a dummy load on port one

yes it was a new data base

if you have a deep pitch voice, you are removing the most prominent

Quoting Frank Haas KB4T :

Friends:

I've only had the F5KA for a few weeks and I've been experimenting
with my audio rack and tweaking EQ and other settings for best sound.
Transmit audio has always been good, clean and full.

After being away on a trip for 2 days with all the gear off and
disconnected from antennas etc., I fired up the F5KA to begin
operations on 80M SSB. I usually start by choosing the dummy load on
TX1 and listening to the F5KA on a separate receiver (TenTec Jupiter)
connected to a short wire antenna to insure that everything sounds
good before going on the big antenna for normal operations. This time
out I noticed a definite fuzzy quality to the edges of the audio.
There is definitely a problem. So the troubleshooting began.

I verified that the audio coming out of the mixer and applied to the
Balanced Line In on the back panel of the F5KA was clean, clear and
undistorted. I even tried different mikes and heard the same fuzzy
quality to the audio. Remember I'm connected to a dummy load. No
matter what power level is chosen 1 watt to 100 watts the audio
quality remained fuzzy. I played with the Mixer's Balanced Line Input
slider with no improvement. I tweaked the MIC gain slider on the front
panel of PSDR (latest version) with no improvement. (I usually run the
Mixer's Balanced Line Input slider all the way up (max input level)
and the PSDR front panel MIC slider at 0 (zero). This has always
worked well. I set my input level to the Balanced Line input so the
Mic Meter just peaks at 0 DB and no higher. Leveler is usually set at
3. Turned it off and tried different settings with no improvement in
the audio.

Next I tried a completely different (linear) power supply. No change.
Tried changing Sample Rate, Buffer Size and Operating mode settings in
both the Driver and the PSDR setup insuring that both were set
identically. All sorts of combinations didn't change the fuzzy
distorted quality of the transmit audio.

Next I did a "Hard Reset" on the F5KA by pulling the power plug and
leaving it out for a minute and then re-inserting. No improvement.

The audio going in is clean. The radio behaves as if either the audio
processing has failed. Output power peaks easily at 100+ watts but
perhaps the biasing is off.

I even tried running the tests in the Ctrl + Shift + P screen. No
improvement.

I've run out of ideas. I guess my 7 month old F5KA needs to return to
Texas for some warranty work. (I'm the second owner and I'm going to
transfer the warranty with Flex if possible tomorrow.)

Have I overlooked anything that can be done without the radio going
back home for repair? Any suggestions before I box it up??

Thanks & 73,

Frank N. Haas KB4T

Re: [Flexradio] HIgh IMD on PSK31

Turn the radio drive power to full power and adjust the rf output to
20 watts or so.. With the vac tx gain slider.. Set the power output
meter to mic or alc and make sure you are driving to less than zero.. If
you go over zero u defiantly are distorting. also you can get rid of
trash outside your psk signal by setting your tx bandwidth filter down
all the way to the edges of your signal.

Blume, Ron wrote:

Help! I have been receiving high IMD reports when using PSK31 and

- FLEX Driver 3.4.2.6300, Sample Rate 192kHz, Buffer Size

- PowerSDR Setup; PowerSDR Setup: Buffer 1024, Sample Rate

- Eltima Virtual Serial Port Ver 6.9, (Using Ports 6 and
16)

- Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD), DM 780, : Version 5 Beta, Build

Using HRD on PSK31, the high IMD reports appear to be the result of a
significant spike in the sideband on the signal; 1800-1900 cycles above
or below (depending upon which sideband) the primary signal at
approximately 1/2 to 1/3 the peak value of the primary signal (as shown
on the PowerSDR screen).

Thinking I may be overdriving PowerSDR from then audio output of HRD
through the virtual line, when I insert 2.5 db attenuation (provided
through an optional soundcard setting on HRD) in the transmit audio
output the sideband signal somewhat disappears but the average signal
increases to 1/2 to 1/3 the maximum value of the primary signal across
the entire 3000 cycles width of the signal! It looks very weird.

Lastly, thinking it may be an HRD problem, I switched to Fldigi on PSK31
and experienced the same results as first described about without the
attenuation. Does anyone have any ideas on what I have missed?

I for one refuse to patronize any website that will not give you the cost up

Re: [Flexradio] flex 5000a atu, swr, and astounding arrl article

2009-09-13 Thread Ray J
Last I thought.. impedance mismatch is one if the causes of "SWR".. so,
it is one in the same basically.. the transmitter expects a 50 ohm load.
if the load is not 50 ohms, the rf is reflected back into the
transmitter.. excessive amounts of reflected power lead to breakdown of
the transistor junctions..

the max swr limit is what is protecting the tuner and amplifier in the
radio from destruction.. the radio should have a protection circuit
built in... power output should fold back as the reflected power level
increases.. protecting the pa from a "damaging" amount of reflected
energy.. but continuously running the radio in this manor will probably
wreck it..

w9Ray

Jim Madden wrote:

He states that impedance mismatch, not SWR, is the cause of transmitter
failure. Given this statement, what protection exists in the flex 5000 to
protect the transmitter from failure? Is it irrelevant what swr I operate at
and thus I can go ahead and bump up the max SWR limit for tuning so I can
transmit on 80m? Is there failsafe protection built-in to the flex so that I
can't do something stupid and destroy the transmitter?

And, while we are on the topic, people have been referring it as a transverter. I
believe I am correct in stating that it is not a transverter, per se, but actually
an expansion module to extend the hardware to 144 MHz & 432 MHz. The
difference being that a transverter simply heterodynes (translates) the signals
down to an RF IF frequency, typically
28 MHz, where the normal radio hardware/software takes over. Whereas with an
expansion module, the 144 MHz & 432 MHz signal processing will use the same
direct-conversion techniques like the radio does on HF/6m.

Re: [Flexradio] 6m Preamp - need and opinion

2009-07-22 Thread Ray J

I would not worry about it..

If you have the Demi preamp, run it.. u don't even need that much
gain.. from the sounds of other peoples results, 10-15db is enough to
really bring the rx to life...

The normal noise floor on 6 meters is high enough that a super low noise
preamp is not as important as higher vhf/uhf bands.

With normal openings (e-skip) on 6 meters, loops work fine.. a wet
noodle probably works fine... If you want max ground wave or want to do
reliable troposcatter.. a decent size beam ( 6+ elements) up in the air
is pretty much a necessity...

If I bought one of the preamps from Pete with 20-21dbg and a NF of .2 would that make much difference with my RX in your opinion?

Purchased an Advanced Receiver Research model P50VDG preamp for my
Flex 5000A and just installed it today. Using two 3' RG59 75 ohm
patch cables to connect the preamp in the RX1 loop. I read the KB
article on the antenna setup for using the RX1 loop and have that
setup per the instructions, but I want to pass this by the group to
make sure I have all my other settings correct. Of course I have the
RX1 loop enabled, but I also have the preamp controls for 6 meters
enabled and the preamp (Power SDR) turned off. Since the gain of the
P50VDG is listed as 24 dB I have the gain box in the antenna
selection window set at 24 dB, and the AGC-T I left set at 110. Does
this appear to be correct? The external preamp is working fine, I'm
just a little concerned seeing the noise floor on the panadapter drop
so significantly. I want to make sure my receiver S meter readings
continue to be accurate.

Do we really want to split their time between TWO reflectors?

Take a look at the Flex-radio.com forums. They are a virtual ghost town. The dates between posts is huge and the responses are minimal from members. The vast majority of persons hang out on this reflector and a much smaller minority on the Yahoo group.
I for see the split causing something similar. This reflector will be used less and less as the more experienced folk run to the new and improved reflector with no newbies!

Also consider Down East Microwave, they sell stuff for 50Mhz-10Ghz..
they list a decent 6 meter unit (GaAs FET pre amp., 18dBG, <0.7DBNF,)
for $65. If u want they will sell it as a kit for $35.. its not hard to
put together .. about a dozen of the larger sized surface mount components..

2009-05-29 Thread Ray J
What is your resistance of the key line out of the sdr1k..?? its
probably not low enough to reliably key the Harbach unit..

they spec the keyline only at 0.7VDC at 1.5mA.

I had a similar problem and installed a ptt buffer board from Down East
Microwave.

http://www.downeastmicrowave.com/PDF/Pttx5.pdf

Its only $25 for 5 separate units and they use good dpdt relays..then
u can switch about anything on tx and rx

so no.. i dont have a better idea...

Jerry Sharp wrote:
Hi all, I just recently picked up a nice Heathkit SB-200 amplifier to
run with my SDR-1000. The SB-200 has the Harbach softkey mod, so the
keying line has only a couple of volts and milliamps on it.

Problem is the X2 port on the SDR won't fully key the amp. I can hear
the amp relay "click", but I show no idle current. When I apply drive
the amp relay starts clicking and cycling. Power out of the amp is all
over the place.

A direct short to ground across the keying line and the amp works
fine...90ma of idle current and 600 stable watts out when I drive the
amp with the SDR. For the time being I'm using a footswitch to key
the amp. But I'd rather have the SDR directly keying the amp.

So other than adding another relay between the X2 port and the amp
keying jack, does anyone have a better idea?

BTW, I've tried pin 7 plus several other X2 keying ports with the same
results. X2 TR sequencing is turned on.

Merry Christmas Art!

The two areas I would concentrate on are the video hookup and the power
supply.

How many toroids do you have on the cable going from the video card to
the monitor? Try changing the refresh frequency on your display and
see if the behavior changes. You can do this by right-clicking on the
desktop, then click on the right-most tab and click the button called
advanced. Under the monitor tab, you can usually change the refresh
freq. If there is a box there that says "show only frequencies
supported by the monitor" leave it checked initially. If it doesn't
show you any options with the boxed checked, uncheck it. You will
usually see 60z, 70hz and one inbetween (64.5 maybe?) Just see if it
changes anything. If it does you have the right area. It may not be
the solution but at least you know where the problem is. If its there,
try changing to a better shielded/toroided cable.

If its not the video card, I would make sure you have ground the heck
out of the computer case to the same ground as the radio. Just as we
were always suspicious of switching power supplies for our rig,
computers have always used them in the modern age and cheap computer
power supplies are a gift from hell. I haven't ever used a compucase
case before so cannot testify abt their power supplies but a good
grounding and toroids on any piece of wire connected to it should help
mightily. BTW, most of those snapon toroids are worthless. The only
ones I can recommend are the big knuckle buster ones from DX
Engineering. Otherwise you are much better off getting some big donut
ones.

The K6JCA branch has a few more changeable colors.. you can change just
about everything the way you want

Not quite a skin, but more personalization is possible than on the
regular release..

6 meters is called the magic band.. because it can do magic acts...
open and close at random, at almost any time..
people 20 miles down the road may not be able hear the guy thats s9 at
your station...
it is not uncommon to go many days with never a peep of signal on 50.125...
Have you tried to find beacons in your area..?

 w3hh/b 50.061in Ocala in el89
 w4cha 50.080 Tampa el88
 k4aho/b 50.077 in Zellwood el98

I seen in my ham mail folder... Hawaii was worked on50.125, 80 miles
west of here(en44, WI) today 18:25utc...

Re: [Flexradio] New w2rf QSK mods now available

how long do the buffers take to fill after the relay closes?

I set my sdr1k to the fastest buffers, and listen to my Icom 746
sending cw.. the relay closeson the 746.. it sends a dit, and the radio
just starts to receive again before I can hear the signal in my srd.

I cannot see how that lag problem will be overcome...

Re: [Flexradio] WSJT6 with Flex 5000A

2008-04-14 Thread Ray J
the only thing I see with WSJT, is you have to set up the right Audio
Device to use... which is the he Virtual Audio Cables 1 and 2

The black wsjt window shows you a list of active devices, you just have
to find your VAC input and output in the list with the corresponding
number.. and punch it into the setup: options menu in WSJT

seen my setup here

you may be overdriving your input have you tried lowering the tx gain
to see if it does anything...

also WSPR only uses about 6 Hz according to Joes site so you can crank
the tx filter width way down... see if that gets rid of the "extra"
transmitted signals....

I tried it out and have no trouble with VAC doing psk31 or WSJT using
svn1911..or svn1880.

Are you sure you have the ports set right on WSJT it can be tricky to
figure out..

On mine, the "first" Virtual cable 1 is the input.. and the "2nd"
virtual cable 2 on the bottom of the list is the output.. Of course
everybody's list of hardware is different.

I hook my 2304 transverter to my icom 746... i have the rx IF drive
cranked up ... the background noise is a bit below s1... still loud..
lots of transverter "noise" .. my 2304 beacon source is s9..

I move the coax from the 746, to the transverter port on my sdr-1000
and its totally deaf. I have to put a 2 meter preamp in front of the
sdr to hear anything ..about -135dbm of background noise... -128dbm on
beacon signal..

i would think it should much higher...

does something sound fishy to any of you... is the first rxif in the
transverter dead?.. voltages look ok according to the DEMI check list...??

stumped...

thanks

Re: [Flexradio] 1000

2007-11-12 Thread Ray J
a quick search an the web listed a UK store selling the stock rx only
sdr-1000 at $1,356

Just the retail cost of the parts almost exceed the selling price ...

* SDR-1000 receiver $650 (oct-2005)
* HPSDR Janus, Ozy, and Atlas boards $400
* Griffin PowerMate accessory with two knobs $60
* Ten-Tec BK-959 custom enclosure $50
* 3 W1VLF 7-pole low pass filters   $180
* Upgraded DC-DC 15volt Converter $50??

The labor involved in a prototype type setting would cost many times
the winning bid

I would be upset if I built that and only got $1300...

The beautiful ebay layout cost at least $100 in laborlol

Not to mention that most other shortwave receivers cannot even start to
compare to the performance of the sdr/hpsdr hardware & the Powersdr
software.

Re: [Flexradio] Up and Running

2007-09-23 Thread Ray J
Hi
I threw out my 2.8 celeron for a 3.2 P4D.. If you started out with the
celeron like me, I doubt you got a good board that will run a Core 2
Duo.. but i don't know that for a fact..

Changing the cpu made a major improvement in my case... I can run with
the smaller buffers.. no pops in the audio anymore...

I got this processor

I should have gotten this one... better L1 cache

Re: [Flexradio] [OT] LNA VHF preamps

2007-06-16 Thread Ray J
I have a DEMI (Down East Microwave)preamp I put together, it was pretty
simple with some surface mount components and several leaded parts..

http://downeastmicrowave.com/PDF/6mlna.PDF

  18dB, <0.7DBNF

one of the best things is the fact is that it is only $35 for the
complete kit with die cast enclosure..

2007-05-29 Thread Ray J
what??

give us a break...

Do you think that ever single little improvement that can be dreamed up
should be fixed/redone by flex?? I suppose at no cost too?

This is not a serious design deficiency.. it is a simple little thing..
that most people never even notice or care about...

It must be a common radio problem because I have this strange noise/
artifact in all of my rigs I have used over the last few years...ic-746,
ft-920, ic-251, and the sdr-1000.

Show us a radio/manufacturer that does not have any design
deficiencies.. one that makes everyone happy about everything...

Re: [Flexradio] Video Cards

I run a GeForce 7300gt

its a older card now..(cheaper now :-( )

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125036

its a pci express card.. 256 MB or ddr2 memory has the standard sub d
connector as well as the DVI-I digital connector with HDTV /tv output..

I normally run the P-SDR on 1 screen and logging/ digi stuff on the
other screen..

I also play several first person shooter games and it works quite well
on all that i have tried.. cod2, hl2, css.

for decent gaming u will want to find a card that will support the
latest DX9.0C and the Pixel Shader3.0 and Vertex Shader3.0

i don't know if there is any need to worry about DX10 yet?

Re: [Flexradio] Amp Keying

2006-07-03 Thread Ray J
the better question is why are you getting a high swr reading in your
system?

if the power sensor is after the amplifier why would the sdr cause a swr
event?

is the swr idiot light also a overdrive indicator light?

do you have the X2 sequencing enabled and the delay set 250+... if
not, you are keying rf into the open amplifier relays and thats your
swr event.

[Flexradio] new Sdr problem

2006-06-10 Thread Ray J
Hello.. Just got my sdr-1000 the other day.. and got a new
computer(3.3ghz cel d 1gbram) all up and running with a delta 44 card
.. i hooked all the stuff together and nothing...
I cannot get any response from the radio.. the relays never click..
the power switch lites up...
I have checked the port address a dozen times..
how frustrating...

I an using the supplied parallel cable.. i ohmed all the pins on the
cable and it appears intact..
thinking it was my home brew computer switched to a decent dell
computer and still cannot get any response..
I measured voltages on the computer side of the cable and some were 5
volts and some were 3.5 volts .. is this right? the documentation says
should be 5 volts..

this will teach me to try to do stuff the day of the contest.. :-(

on yeah.. Its VHF contest this weekend.. so dust of the vhf/uhf stuff..

any thought would be appreciated..

Is there a huge amount of drift when you power up the radio now???

The DEMI transverters use this arrangement of a heater on the
oscillator. and the transverters are unusable the first minute you turn
them on because of the freq drift..

We added a thermistor to help stabilize the oscillator due to temp
variations. The modification will be available to current owners in
the near
