Even if you have a PSK program other than MixW, the info in this file will

[Flexradio] Future FlexControl users - Installation heads up

2011-06-04 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all Flexers who have purchased the new FlexControl tuning knob

Since the FlexControls are now shipping in volume and will start showing
up at your QTH shortly, there is an installation consideration you
should be aware of if you use VSPmanager for virtual com port access.
There is a bug in the Eltima API used in VSPmanager that results in the
possibility of the FlexControl's assigned physical com port to conflict
with an already defined virtual com port resulting in at worst, a
Windows crash (BSoD). There have also been reports of other virtual com
port software causing issues too, so this condition is not exclusive to
VSPmanager.

This information is in the FlexControl errata that is included with the
FlexControl, but I thought it would be useful to provide a proactive
notice for those who might want to take action before your FlexControl
arrives. You can download a copy of the FlexControl errata using this
URL: http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=370

The issue is that VSPmanager is not properly reporting it's virtual com
ports to Windows and when the FlexControl drivers are initialized and a
physical com port is assigned by Windows to the FlexControl process,
that assigned com port is already in use by VSPmanager. Two
applications cannot have exclusive use of the same comport, resulting in
the operating system crash.

This situation arises when you have virtual comports that are assigned
to low numbered comports; such as 1-9 since that is the likely range of
com ports Windows will assign to new physical com ports.

You can mitigate this problem in two ways.

First by defining virtual com ports that are not in the range of 1-9.
So if you have virtual com port pairs defined where either of the com
port end points are in this range, delete the com port pair and
re-create it with the com port end points greater than 9.

If you have already installed PowerSDR 2.1.x, then remove VSPmanager
(make sure you delete the com port pairs first), install PowerSDR v2.1
RC3 or later, get the FlexControl working properly and then install
VSPmanager and define your virtual com port pairs. In this case, since
the FlexControl is already installed and has a physical com port
assigned, VSPmanager correctly identifies the physical comport that the
FlexControl is using and will not allow you to create a virtual com port
using the com port already in use resulting in no com port conflict.

Sampling rate: 96K
Audio buffer: 1024
VAC driver: WDM-KS
VAC buffer size: 1024 (match the audio buffer)
Digital RX DSP: 4096 (largest one available)
Digital TX DSP: depends. If you use small TX filters that are 2-4x time
the digital mode bandwidth, then a sharp filter (4096) is useful,
otherwise 1024

[Flexradio] Windows 1394 Firewire driver setting for Win7 users

2011-02-22 Thread Tim (W4TME)
I just finished discussing this situation with the Firewire developers
and here is their recommendation for setting the 1394 Windows driver
type when using the 3.5.5.10185 Firewire driver that was included with
PowerSDR v2.0.19 RC1.

Our recommendation for 3.5.5 is to use the legacy 1394 bus driver on
Win7. This is primarily due to the extra CPU overhead that we
identified in Microsoft's new 1394 bus driver.

Please refer to this KB article for setting the Windows 1394 driver to
the legacy version

Re: [Flexradio] Announcing PowerSDR(TM) v2.0.19 RC1 Release Candidate

2011-02-18 Thread Tim (W4TME)
I would like to add a few helpful hints for running PowerSDR v2.0.19 RC1
that might make your installation go a bit smoother.

1.) Read the release notes. Seriously, it is a best practice.

2.) You do NOT have to uninstall a previous version of PowerSDR before
installing PowerSDR v2.0.19 RC1

3.) PowerSDR v2.0.19 RC1 will automatically update the firmware on your
radio. Allow it to finish completely and reboot the radio when prompted
(FLEX-1500). Power cycling the FLEX-x000 after a firmware update is
always a best practice (you will have to shut down PowerSDR 2.0.19 RC1
first).

4.) This release has a new Firewire driver. You may experience
distorted audio the first time you start PowerSDR due to the sampling
not not getting initialized properly. If this is the case, toggling the
Start button usually clears it up.

In 99% of the time, the new Firewire driver will install properly with
PowerSDR v2.0.19 RC1, but if you want to be sure that it installs
without any issues, it is recommended that you uninstall the Firewire
driver before installing PowerSDR v2.0.16. To do this..

a.) Power off your FLEX-x000 SDR
b.) Open Windows Control Panel
c.) Click on the Add or Remove Programs or Programs and Features.
d.) Uninstall any and all programs that looks like FlexRadio
3.x.y.abcd where x.y.abcd is the version number (do not uninstall PowerSDR)

e.) reboot your PC
f.) Install PowerSDR v2.0.16 (preferably using the defaults) following
the user prompts

5.) If upgrading from PowerSDR 1.x to PowerSDR 2.0.16, it is STRONGLY
recommended that you do not do a database import, but allow PowerSDR to
create a new database and manually reconfigure it.

6.) If using the K9DUR Data Transfer tool to import a pre 2.0.19 RC1
database, it is highly recommended that you do not import the state
table. PowerSDR 2.0.19 has a lot of new default database parameters
located in various tables and importing a pre 2.0.19 RC1 database may
overwrite those new parameters making the operation pf PowerSDR 2.0.19
RC1 inconsistent. If you observe any inconsistencies, reset your
database and configure it manually.

7.) The previous configuration you had setup for CW will most likely not
be optimal with the new CW enhancements. You may want to re-setup CW
using smaller audio buffers, different sampling rates and break-in values.

Dear FlexRadio customers:

FlexRadio is pleased to announce the availability of PowerSDR v2.0.19
Release Candidate 1 (RC1) for public download from our website. This
version incorporates a totally new CW keying architecture that was written
from the ground up to achieve minimum jitter and latency using both internal
and external keyers. To say this is a rewrite is a bit of an
understatement. We got out Farnsworth and started from “dit.” Everything
is right now in “PARIS.”

We have also done significant work since the v2.0.16 beta release to improve
installation and overall out of box experience on all radios. We have
optimized the USB driver for the FLEX-1500 to perform well on a wide range
of PC platforms. We have also incorporated a new FireWire driver with less
CPU overhead on Windows 7 systems. The number of little and not so little
bug fixes are too numerous to mention here. Check out the change log and
release notes. A note about release notes, PLEASE READ the them to get the

We are very excited about v2.0.19 RC1 as we enter the final steps toward the
PowerSDR v2.0.x Official Release. We thank you for your patience and
support while we have been preparing this important release. We request you
report any bugs found in this release to the bug tracker at

[Flexradio] [OT] A happy Holiday Season to all my Flexer Friends!

2010-12-24 Thread Tim (W4TME)
I just wanted to waste a bit of reflector bandwidth to say “Happy
Holidays” to all my Flexer friends and acquaintances.

2010 has been an interesting and busy year for all us involved with
FlexRadio. With the release of two new hardware offerings (the V/U and
FLEX-1500), PowerSDR 2.0.x plowing through what must be by now the
mother of all development cycles to integrate new hardware and come out
with a much improved version of PowerSDR, a lot has transpired. And to
top it all off, our ranks have grown significantly (I see all of the
reflector subscriber requests) this year too. There are more great
things to come in the upcoming new year. It is an exciting time to be a
ham radio enthusiast.

Here is wishing everyone a Happy Holiday in your native language (sorry
if I missed yours).

[Flexradio] QST for all FLEX-1500 users

2010-11-23 Thread Tim (W4TME)
Last weekend, FlexRadio Systems' Development group released a new USB
driver patch kit, revision D.

There was discovered this week a slight defect for 23-bit systems
regarding the correct installation of the updated USB DLL driver. This
defect has been corrected and FLEX-1500 Driver Patch Kit for PowerSDR
v2.0.16, rev E is now available for download. If you successfully
installed version D of this patch kit and your system is operational,
there is *no* need to install the rev E patch kit. The USB DLL (driver)
file was not updated, just the mechanism of how it was installed was
corrected. The FLEX-1500 Driver Patch Kit for PowerSDR v2.0.16
Installation Troubleshooting Guide has been updated too.

Please feel free to contact FlexRadio Support (supp...@flexradio.com) if
you need assistance in running any of the troubleshooting procedures and
particularly if none of the procedures work for your setup, as we need
to collect this information in order to better understand the issues and
get them resolved before the next beta release of PowerSDR 2.0.x

[Flexradio] QST for FLEX-1500 users having USB driver installation / operational issues

2010-11-20 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all FLEX-1500 Users,

As you are probably aware, there have been some installation and
operational issues related to the new USB streaming device driver for
the FLEX-1500. These issues, which didn't show up during alpha testing,
effect a small percentage of FLEX-1500 users. There were actually
several individual issues that arose during the public beta testing
including difficulty getting the drivers to install properly to adverse
interactions with using certain newer USB chipsets (controllers).

The FlexRadio development team has been working very diligently to
characterize the issues over the past two weeks and believe that they
understand the problems fairly well. As a result of those efforts, there
is an updated FLEX-1500 Driver Patch Kit for PowerSDR v2.0.16 (Rev.D)
along with a multi-procedure troubleshooting guide that describes how to
install the FLEX-1500 Driver Patch Kit for PowerSDR v2.0.16 along with
additional troubleshooting steps to get your radio operational using
PowerSDR v2.0.16. If none of these troubleshooting procedures resolve
your problems, there is a final procedure for reverting back to PowerSDR
v2.0.8 which uses the higher latency Windows sound card drivers.

Troubleshooting Guide can be downloaded here:

I am sure I/Y/K would never get away with releasing a radio in
beta sold on with a promise of a full release soon .. only for 9
months later still to be promising a working release.

And its not just CW that was broken ... I read the sales blurb
again on Waters and Stanton site last night to reconfirm what I
purchased and there are many functions broken or not
working or still being developed that are in the sales - the sales
reads more like a wish list than actual live features.

Do I expect it to be perfect - no

Do I expect it to be 99% - yes

I paid a significant amount of money for my flex 1500 - this isnt
a home built kit, or group of amateurs working in their spare time,
this is a commercial sale, selling in major magazines, selling a
product that is not (IMHO) working

I bought the flex1500 on good faith knowing that a full release
in work - yes they have had issues around a USB driver but what
worries me is the vast amount of stuff not related to USB that
does not work.

Its a blind view to say I am an amateur so I should not expect it
to work properly - I paid a lot of hard earned cash - if it had
been home electronics item I would have returned it long ago -
depending on how my issues are resolved I may yet be returning it!
Id be returning it regardless of it its flex or icom/yae/kenw.

Minor miracle - hardly - if I had it out the box and all the
features working I maybe thinking and informing others that yes its
a good buy - At the moment - expensive paperweight.

Am I alone in that view - No - I know others are also stuck - a
colleague also bought a Flex at the same time as me - has his
experience been the same - yes indeed it has.

I dont have a blinkered view - I bought a commerical bit of kit -
expensive at that - I expect a working product soon- or else Flex
will be minus one customer and I am quite sure with the number of
1500 owners I wont be the only one.

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR 2.0.6 Beta the Flex 1500

2010-07-23 Thread Tim (W4TME)
The topic you posted to the FlexRadio User Reflector contains subject
material that is best suited for the FlexEdge Reflector. This
reflector, the FlexRadio Users Reflector, is designated only for
discussion and support for officially released and supported hardware,
system, and software configurations.

Topics that pertain to discussions of beta software/firmware should be
posted on the FlexEdge Reflector.

For more information about the FlexEdge Reflector, please see the
following web page:

http://www.flex-radio.com/Support.aspx?topic=Reflector_Description

To sign up for the FlexEdge Reflector, use the FlexEdge Reflector User
Management web page
(http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexedge_flex-radio.biz)
and go to the Subscribing to FlexEdge section.

To answer your question, a firmware update is required for version 2.0.6
to enable the CW sidetone control. This is listed in the release notes
in the Updates and Changes in this Release section user US40.

A procedure for updating the FLEX-1500 firmware will be published
tomorrow and an announcement made on the FlexEdge reflector regarding
where it can be downloaded from.

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR 2.0.6 Beta the Flex 1500

2010-07-23 Thread Tim (W4TME)

No tweaking occurred. And an apology is not necessary. It isn't a
punishable offense :-)

All of the discussion regarding the 2.0.6 software are occurring on
FlexEdge and if threads get started here, then there will be topics and
information that are missed by some FlexEdge users. Conversely, there is
good information about PowerSDR v2.0.6 occurring right now on FlexEdge
that I assume people who are subscribed only to this reflector are
missing. The point of the message is to make sure we all do our best to
(a) know where the information regarding beta software is being
disseminated and (b) try to keep it in one place so that there is a
single source for pertinent information regarding the 2.0.6 Beta.

Yeah, the firmware reference for the FLEX-1500 was a bit obscure and the
usual user warning in PowerSDR about needing to update the firmware is
not existent. So it is easy to miss.

The bug tracker uses a little program called a watch dog to look for

the bug tracker. As with any good watch dog, it decides to take a nap

[Flexradio] QST to all FLEX-1500 users

2010-07-02 Thread Tim (W4TME)

This is a QST to all FLEX-1500 users.

There is a new Early Deployment version of PowerSDR that is specific for
production FLEX-1500 owners only. It is PowerSDR v2.0.5 and you can
download it from the FlexRadio website using this URL:

http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=336

Before running PowerSDR v2.0.5 for the FLEX-1500, please read the
release errata as there is important information regarding the audio
driver configuration for low latency operation. It can be downloaded
using this URL: http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=337

PowerSDR v2.0.5 for the FLEX-1500 is intended for production FLEX-1500
owners ONLY! It is not intended for FLEX-5000/3000 and SDR-1000 users,
therefore you should not download and run this software! PowerSDR v2.0.5
does *not* contain any fixes or enhancements for FLEX-x000 or SDR-1000
users and has known issues with the FLEX-3000. This code has not been
regression tested with the FLEX-x000 or SDR-1000.

Re: [Flexradio] F5K antenna #3 port question

2010-06-26 Thread Tim (W4TME)

I know that this rig is deaf on 6 meters without using a preamp..

This is incorrect information. the 6m Preamp is needed for weak signal
work but to characterize it as deaf is a bit extreme.

It sounds like you have a problem with the HRFIO board. Contact
FlexRadio Support so the issue can be investigated.

Got my six meter am online today and tried hooking it up through antenna
port 3 so as to keep things separate.
I found that antenna jack 3 seems to have some attenuation(at least on 6
meters) vs port # 2 or # 1.
Also noted that if I hit the tune button while hooked to antnna #3 I have a
1:1 SWR showing while my antenna is really running at a 1.7:1 right now.

I have seen some messages here tht had something to do with antenna port#3
issues but can't find anything in the KB about this particular problem.

I had RX 2 on anther 6 meter antenna and could see several signals that were
not showing on antenna 3 jack so I changed that antenna to port #2 and they
were coming in just fine. When that antenna goes back on port #3 I don't hear
much of anything at all but my local.
I know that this rig is deaf on 6 meters without using a preamp on the RX
loop so one question I have is even though the option is still shown on the
menu is antenna port # 3 really getting to use the RX loop and my preamp? That
could explain the RX deficit a bit.

[Flexradio] QST to all FLEX-1500 users

2010-06-26 Thread Tim (W4TME)

This is a QST to all new FLEX-1500 users.

This announcement is for all new FLEX-1500 users. If you have a beta
FLEX-1500 as opposed to a production unit, please disregard this
notification.

There is a new Early Deployment version of PowerSDR that is specific for
production FLEX-1500 owners. It is PowerSDR v2.0.3 and you can download
it from the FlexRadio website
(http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=335)

This version of PowerSDR v2.0.3 is intended for production FLEX-1500
owners ONLY! It contains modifications to automatically correct minor
data problems in the EEPROM. Users with beta versions of the FLEX-1500
should not load or run this software as it can make your radio inoperable.

PowerSDR v2.0.3 does *not* contain any fixes or enhancements for
FLEX-x000 or SDR-1000 users. This code has not been tested with the
FLEX-x000 or SDR-1000. It is not intended for FLEX-5000/3000 and

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500 Shipping

2010-06-24 Thread Tim (W4TME)
It would be cool if Flex could periodically comment on the dates orders
that are shipping each week were placed.

They might, but don't be disappointment if they don't provide that
detail of information publicly.

I have been informed that the Sales/Order fulfillment department has
been overloaded with calls and e-mails over the past 24 hours from
people wanting to know when they are going to get their radios.
Answering all these calls and e-mails slows down the process of order
fulfillment for *everyone*, so unless you are actually making a change
to your order, the Sales folks have kindly asked that you delay from
inquiring about your order status so they can focus on getting product
out the door. Believe me, they want to ship them just as bad as you
want to get your radio, so what ever we can do to help is appreciated.

I am sure that there will be public announcements of some sort regarding
product status from the management periodically over the next several weeks.

[Flexradio] FLEX-3000 Shack Pictures anyone?

2010-06-18 Thread Tim (W4TME)
We are a little sparse on shack pics for the FLEX-3000
(http://www.flex-radio.com/Users.aspx?topic=shackpics_f3k) so I am
sending out a QST for anyone who would like to showcase there FLEX-3000
equipped shack be it permanent, portable or mobile.

If you want to have your shack shown on the web site, just send me the
pictures to my personal e-mail address (not the reflector as they will
be rejected). They need to be as high of resolution as possible. Don't
worry about the size, I'll modify them to fit. I also need a
description of your shack to compliment the picture(s).

In order to be an equal opportunity offer, I'll take FLEX-1500,
FLEX-5000 and SDR-1000 shack pics too.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR 2.0.0 Beta - questions and answers

2010-05-27 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all FlexRadio Reflector users,

Before the questions regarding PowerSDR v2.0.0 Beta get too far out of
hand, I need to remind all that this reflector is not for discussing or
troubleshooting issues with beta or alpha software. That is what the
FlexEdge reflector is intended for.

If you want to try the new beta software, please subscribe to the
FlexEdge reflector and post your questions there, as some of you are
missing basic answers to questions already asked and answered on the
FlexEdge reflector.

For more information about the FlexEdge Reflector, please see the
following web page:

http://www.flex-radio.com/Support.aspx?topic=Reflector_Description

To sign up for the FlexEdge Reflector, use the FlexEdge Reflector User
Management web page
(http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexedge_flex-radio.biz)
and go to the Subscribing to FlexEdge section.

Thanks for everyone's cooperation.

Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0

2010-05-27 Thread Tim (W4TME)
Actually he can run multiple radios from one database. When PowerSDR
inits, it looks at the S/N of the radio and compares it to what is in
the database, if they do not match, then it will populate the DB with
the EEPROM data from the attached radio. You can do this with multiple
FLEX-5000s or FLEX-5000 and a FLEX-3000. Eric was really crafty when he
coded in this fail-safe feature

Although if you want speedier loading, you can use the runtime option to
tell PowerSDR what base folder to use for storing the variable user data.

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50469.aspx

And would probably be the preferred method of running multiple radios on
one computer. This is how I run a FLEX-1500 and a FLEX-5000/3000 on the
same computer *at the same time*.

Richard,

No, he needs separate database files for each radio since the calibration
for each specific radio is stored in the database file. If he were to
follow the procedure you suggest, the file would only have the calibration
data for radio #2, radio #1 may not work properly. Unless, of course, you
were suggesting that he repeat that procedure every time he switched radios.

The driver will only allow one radio to be on at a time, but he can set
things up to use different databases for each radio. This can only be
accomplished by a new feature in v2.0 Beta that may not be documented yet.
Basically, it involves specifying a command-line parameter in the shortcut
used to start PowerSDR to tell PowerSDR what database file to use. I know
the feature exists (at least it did in the SVN revisions), but I do not know
the correct syntax of the command-line parameter to be used.

I think I know what you are asking.

You only need to upgrade the PowerSDR software once - as that is the front
end. It does not affect your Flex hardware. Now to
upgrade firmware you will connect one Flex at a time and perform the
upgrade. Once you have done one, disconnect, plug in the other
and upgrade firmware.

Or have I got it wrong too? ;-)

You cannot attach two Firewire based FlexRadio SDRs to the same computer and

My experience with this setup is a little annoying. Is it not possible
to set the F5K output to a real save 20 watt limit. I am not shure
making a big fault handling the radio. Last tests done with SVN 3706, PC
(2x2.4 GHz with Win 7, CPU load between 15 and 35%) and firewire working
well.

- There are too many functions affecting the drive power control, like
band buttons or transmit profiles. One click on a band button with a
band stack memory with full 100w setting and my tubes are gone!??!
ok, this is a PSDR design issue. VK5VCO did the job in the Feature
Request List Req ID 2746, Power limit warning protection

- Like described in the manual i set my output power to 20 watt with the
tune function. Showing 20 w in PowerSDR and on my external wattmeter.

Talking in SSB I wonder about peaks up to 35 watts (PEP Meter MFJ-828,
the amp grid-overdrive flashes 1k5 output). My ALC is -6 dB max and the
ALC Comp is all time 0 dB with a normal HC5 handmic. I found out to
reach 45 Watt (PSDR and ext wattmeter) while Drive is set to *22* when i
put my Mic and DX controllers to full right!! Well its silly and
completely overdriven, but it can happen! Contestfighting, the 338 DXCC
country.. not everybody is checking every control 5 minutes before
pushing the PTT!

I read some discussions threads on this reflector about mike gain,
compander, careful adjustments and more. But when there is a limit for
the max rated power *nothing* in the radio shoud not be able to override
this limit! Most old style knobbed radios can do this..

Meanwhile i think the only safe way is a big attenuator between the F5K
and the amp. Someone did this and can show me a way how?

The skins are copyrighted material of FlexRadio Systems and are bound
by a different license agreement than PowerSDR which is GPL v2. The
previous installers used for beta testing have been removed from the
public domain in preparation of the upcoming official public beta of
PowerSDR v2.0.0 which has the correct license agreements for both open
and closed source software in addition to all the skins.

Unfortunately you are in the limbo zone between alpha and beta software,
so you'll have to be patient for a few days until PowerSDR v2.0.0 Beta

Agreed. And that's fine if you are the person sharing. But if you are

like to view the publicly available content from others who choose
only to publish on Facebook - then the article below shows you

Dear Flexers,

It's time to make your plans for The annual FlexRadio Systems Banquet for
the 2010 Dayton Hamvention. The banquet is a combination social event,
three course dinner and technical forum held on Saturday night during the
Hamvention. This is a great event in a nice relaxed atmosphere away from the
hustle and bustle of the show floor where you can mingle with FlexRadio
Systems folks and other Flexers without the noise and distractions.

This year's event will be held at the Holiday Inn - Dayton Airport
NWhttp://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/daynw/hoteldetail?start=1
in
their Ballroom on Saturday May 15th, 2010. The festivities will start with
a Social Hour from 5:30 to 6:30 PM where you can mingle and talk to fellow
Flexers and the FlexRadio factory team. There will be a full service cash
bar serving adult and soft beverages for a nominal price. The bar will close
at 7:30 PM. The three course dinner will starts promptly at 6:30 and ends
around 7:30 PM. At 7:45 PM there will be a short Welcome to FlexRadio
Banquet salutation along with the Flexi
Awardshttp://www.flex-radio.com/Users.aspx?topic=flexies
presentation
during the dessert course. Starting promptly at 8:00 PM will be the
forums. This event is open to the public. Attending the dinner is not
mandatory. You can come just for the social hour, forum and presentations if
you like. If you would like to attend the dinner, you will need to sign up
for your entree choice and purchase the dinner from the On-Line
Storehttp://www.flex-radio.com/OnlineOrdering.aspx?cid=13
at: http://www.flex-radio.com/OnlineOrdering.aspx .

**This year's technical forums will focus on all the new hardware and
software products FlexRadio Systems has recently recently released. We'll
be discussing the new FLEX-1500 QRP software defined radio, the FLEX-5000
VU5K VHF/UHF upgrade, and even an introduction to our new CDRX-Series of
receivers for the Government market. Of course, we'll be showing off our
new PowerSDR V2.0 software and describing the new looks, features, and
capabilities.

The number of seats available for the dinner is limited and already starting
to fill up, so make your reservations today! For more information regarding
the event schedule, venue location and details on the dinner menu, please
see the 2010 FlexRadio Hamvention Banquet web
pagehttp://www.flex-radio.com/signup.aspx?topic=dayton10
 at: http://www.flex-radio.com/signup.aspx?topic=dayton10 .

We look forward to meeting you at the Dayton Hamvention 2010 Banquet!

Re: [Flexradio] AM BCB Images

There is not a BCI Rejection feature on the FLEX-x000 or FLEX-1500
SDRs. This was only specific to the SDR-1000.

I'm running a SDR-1000 so your mileage may vary with a Flex 5000.

Is this status quo, or is there some mod to improve this? I am not
hearing any AM broadcast stations in the amateur bands (thankfully!)

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

VAC - virtual audio cable - is used to transfer audio from one
application to the other.

Com0Com - virtual SERIAL port software - is used to allow one program to
communicate data serially to another program. Usually these are CAT
commands or you can use the serial port to assert PTT to key and un-key
the radio.

[Flexradio] FlexRadio Systems Dinner and Forums - Dayton 2010

2010-04-15 Thread Tim (W4TME)

QST to Reflector members,

The information for the FlexRadio Systems Dinner and Forums is now
available on the web site. This years event will *not* be held at the
University of Dayton as it has in previous years due to a scheduling
conflict.

This event, as always, is open to the public. Attending the dinner is
not mandatory. You can come just for the social hour, forums and
presentations if you like.

This years extravaganza is being held at the Holiday Inn - Dayton
Airport NW in their Ballroom on Saturday May 15th, 2010.

10 Rockridge Rd
Englewood Ohio 45322
Phone: 1-937-832-1234

Event Schedule
5:30 - Cash Bar Opens
6:30 - Dinner Begins
7:30 - Cash Bar Closes
7:45 - Welcome and Awards
8:00 - Breakout for Forums
9:30 - Closing

The festivities will start with a Social Hour from 5:30 to 6:30 PM
where you can mingle and talk to fellow Flexers. There will be a full
service cash bar serving adult and soft beverages for a nominal price.
The bar will close at 7:30 PM.

The three course dinner will starts promptly at 6:30 and ends around
7:30 PM At 7:45 PM there will be a short Welcome to FlexRadio Banquet
salutation along with the Flexi Awards presentation during the dessert
course.

Starting promptly at 8:00 PM will be the forums. The number of forums,
speakers and the discussion subjects are still being determined, so
please check the web site for more details.

If you would like to join us for dinner, you will need to fill out the
sign up sheet on the Hamvention Banquet Sign Up web page
(http://www.flex-radio.com/signup.aspx?topic=dayton10) indicating the
number of guest and your dinner preference. Please indicate your dinner
preference with a 1, 2 or 3 depending on which one you would like
to have served.

NOTE: We are having a small problem with the web-based Sign-Up form and
should have it operational shortly. In the mean time, you can proceed
to the next step an purchase your dinner(s) and then fill out the
sign-up form once it is working.

Once you have indicated the number of people that will be attending the
dinner and their entree choice, go to the FlexRadio Online Store web
page and select the Hamvention Dinner Reservations option to purchase
the dinners (http://www.flex-radio.com/OnlineOrdering.aspx?cid=13)

If you do not actually purchase your dinners through the Online Store,
you may not have a seat or your dinner preference available at the
banquet. Signing up below helps determine the number of reservations
available since they are limited to 100.

This is a great event in a nice relaxed atmosphere away from the hustle
and bustle of the show floor where you can mingle with FlexRadio Systems
folks and other Flexers without the noise and distractions. And the
food isn't bad either. Gerald always has exciting news about FlexRadio
and the forums are always entertaining and informative.

Hope to see you there!

[Flexradio] New FLEX-3000 review available for download

2010-04-08 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all Flexers,

There is a new article in the April 2010 edition of Amateur Radio
(Australia) by none other than our own Brian, VK7RR. This is an
excellent operators overview of the FLEX-3000 and how he uses it for
portable operation in addition to the added bonus of creating unusual WX
at his QTH.

You can access the article from the left hand side bar on the FlexRadio
System's home page or you can use this direct link. The article is a
bit large and may take a little while to download.

Re: [Flexradio] My google search failed and yhe Knowledge base returned no useful results.

2010-04-08 Thread Tim (W4TME)
For future reference, that is a fairly complex search string for the KB.
It does not use the same sophisticated search engine like Google uses.
Single or dual keyword searches work better.

The location of the audio file depends on what version of PowerSDR you
are using. I am assuming that you have a 1.x version, so look in the
PowerSDR application folder first where the database is stored. Note
that if you recorded using the QuickRecord feature or recorded the audio
pre-processed, you will not be able to play the wave file on anything
other than PowerSDR or another application that understands I/Q data.

This is covered in the FLEX-x000 Owner's Manual in the section on the
Play and Record controls.

Re: [Flexradio] My google search failed and yhe Knowledge base returned no useful results.

2010-04-08 Thread Tim (W4TME)

AH HA! Using a 64-bit OS, I see.

Yes, this is a current issue with 64-bit operating systems and PowerSDR
1.x After installation, PowerSDR saves files into the Program Files sub
folders and Micr$oft considers this place hallowed ground and will not
let an infidel wave file be placed there.

Vista and Win7 use file system virtualization to fool applications
into thinking files are where the apps put them when they are not.

Look in:
C:\Users\your_account\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program
Files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.18.5

hey show up when you use the Add button in Wave File Controls.
This is some Windows 7 64 weirdness I am sure.
I'll search for the file with Explorer and find them but its also
showing them locked as well. ( I have show hidden files turned on. )
I am trying to make the files portable by converting them into MP3s
once can get my hands on them.

[Flexradio] A note to the Raleigh hamfest attendees

2010-04-03 Thread Tim (W4TME)
I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting everyone today with
eyeball QSOs and getting to talk FlexRadio stuff. I really enjoyed
myself and I hope you did too. I believe I have now met all of the
FlexRadio SDR owners within a 150 mile radius of Raleigh :-)

By chance I didn't get to you personally due to the mass of humanity at
the booth, which was a bit crowded at times, and you have any questions
I didn't get answered, please feel free to contact me personally.

A special thanks for those who purchased products at the show. It is
greatly appreciated!

Next stop for me will be Dayton. See ya there.

[Flexradio] New FLEX-VU5K pictures available

2010-03-16 Thread Tim (W4TME)
As you may or may not know, the FLEX-5000 V/U module (FLEX-VU5K)
underwent a redesigned after it was determined that the NF did not meet
the design specifications once the module was installed in a FLEX-5000
chassis during prototype testing. That re-engineering has been
completed and there are updated pictures of the FLEX-VU5K (60w version)
installed in a FLEX-5000A on the web site. It is still expected that
the FLEX-VU5K will start beta testing at the end of the month or the
beginning of April. Ship dates are still TBD.

I tidied up my shack.

Over the years I've added many antennas to my station. Some stay, some
go, but the cables seem to still come into the shack. I had everything
from b...@ssed Heliax down to RG-58, plus rotor cables and CAT5 and
quite a few that I couldn't remember what they were ever connected to.

Needless to say, the back end of my shack was a complete rats-nest.
I needed to replace my CAT5 due to recent storm damage, and I decided
this would be a good excuse to get things sorted out.

So, anything not needed was removed. Others were routed neatly, and even
ty-wrapped in some cases. Even the lab side of the shack was cleaned up,
with shorter GPIB cables where appropriate.

Now, I have a problem on 20m.Before, all was fine. This is with my F3K,
which goes through a Daiwa SWR meter to my AT-1000, then to the antenna
switch. My 20m antenna is a Cushcraft A4S at ~ 50ft. It is better than
2:1 over the band. When I hit the PTT, there is no output, of
course. When I speak, it goes to ~100w as expected, but when I pause it
still shows ~10w fwd with about a 3:1 SWR. I disconnected the mic and
the key, and used CWX to send a carrier, and it does the same thing.

Next, tried it into a good dummy load, and had no problems. So it looks
like an RFI issue, but why would the SWR change? Probably radiating
somewhere it wasn't supposed to, but I coupled it to my spectrum
analyzer and didn't see anything untoward. Still scratching my head on
that one.

PCs and radios are all connected to a substantial ground system.
The only thing left was the Firewire cable. I only had some RG-8 size
ferrets, so had to run the firewire cable looped through them. I really
couldn't see any improvement.

Based on comments seen here, I'm going to get a couple of Granite
Digital cables, but a scan of their website
(http://www.granitedigital.com/firewireproducts.aspx) is rather
confusing. Which one is right for this application? I have about 6ft
between the back of the F3K and its computer.

Sorry for the rant. It is not intended to be a criticism of Flex in any
way, just a notice to anyone that a messy shack can be quite a good thing.

There used to be a saying: 'Don't fix it if it ain't broke'.
The ham version seems to be: 'Fix it until it is broke'.

Re: [Flexradio] Mail and website outage

2010-03-11 Thread Tim (W4TME)
The web site is actually working fine. There isn't a problem with web
site being intercepted, the issue is with your ISP providing your DNS
lookup services. This situation will clear itself up automatically as
the DNS servers and your PC refreshes their DNS caches.

There was an unplanned, but forced migration of the flex-radio.com DNS
servers to a more competent DNS provider early this AM. This activity
was planned for 12:01 AM this coming Sunday, but the second total DNS
server failure in the past three days from the previous DNS provider
required us to accelerate the time table. Your ISP probably is still
pointing to the old DNS name servers and based on what I have seen over
the past few days, who knows what IP address will be returned for
www.flex-radio.com from those faulty servers.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: [Flexradio] Hamfest price discount or show special pricing!

2010-02-24 Thread Tim (W4TME)
The discounts are available only for people actually placing orders for
FlexRadio Systems SDRs at the hamfest. This is no different that what
most other ham radio vendor does at at hamfests.

At the time of the Raleigh hamfest, the FLEX-1500 should be a shipping
product; fulfilling orders for those who have pre-ordered and paid for a
FLEX-1500. Those orders will be fill before any orders received at the
hamfest.

The FLEX-1500 is already priced very aggressively, so I do not
anticipate anything substantial in that area, but I don't make those
decisions, I'm just the PR guy.

[Flexradio] Caution: New VAC version, 4.10 does not work well with PowerSDR

2010-02-18 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all Flexers,

There is a new version of VAC, v4.10 that has been released in the past
few days. Initial testing has indicated that it is *not* a drop in
replacement for VAC v4.09.

I have been experiencing significant audio drop outs on receive and
(worse) on transmit. Changing sample rates and buffers sizes does not
seem to make any improvement in the audio quality.

I would strongly recommend that Flexers who utilize VAC *NOT* install
VAC 4.10 until some of these issues can be rectified. If you do plan to
test VAC 4.10, please do so with a dummy load until you are certain of
the quality of signal you are transmitting.

I have started a correspondence with the VAC developers to help identify
and rectify the significant deficiencies and defects in VAC 4.10 as they
pertain to its use with PowerSDR.

One other note to all users. Please do not post on the reflectors the
URL for VAC upgrades. This is private information and is shared with
only registered users of VAC and not the thousands of users on the
reflectors. The distributors of VAC don't appreciate it and obviously
get a little upset if it is done since it allows their software to be
easily pirated. If you are a registered user of VAC and you do not know
how to get updates, you must contact the entity you purchased VAC from
to get that information.

Re: [Flexradio] Comm Oh Comm!

2010-02-15 Thread Tim (W4TME)
The only problem with something like hub4com is that if you have more
than one program controlling the radio, you can get into all sorts of
trouble because the two programs controlling the radio do not know about
each other and can put the radio into a conflicted state. Worst case is
that you are transmitting when you shouldn't be and into the wrong load,
which can damage the radio.

This is where DDUtil shines as it helps control what functions CAT
connected programs can do. In addition to a lot of other really cool
stuff, like SO2R.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR v1.18.5 is now available for download

2010-02-12 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all Flexers,

FlexRadio Systems has released PowerSDR v1.18.5 and it is available for
immediate download and use. This is a maintenance software release of
PowerSDR 1.18.4 and contains several critical bug fixes that were in the
recently deferred v1.18.4 release. It is recommended that you upgrade
to PowerSDR v1.18.5 at your earliest convenience and stop using v1.18.4
if you have it already installed.

You can download the PowerSDR v1.18.5 installation software using this
URL: http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=313

You do not have to uninstall previous releases of PowerSDR to install a
new one. All new PowerSDR releases install in their own separate folder.

It is recommended that you review the PowerSDR release notes prior to
installing a new version of PowerSDR to make sure you have the proper
versions of .NET, firmware and FLEX Firewire driver recommended for the
release. In addition, a list of bug fixes included in the v1.18.5
release are listed in the release notes.

The v1.18.5 release notes can be accessed from the Knowledge Center
using this URL: http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50448.aspx

Remember, it is always a best practice to allow PowerSDR to create a
brand new database with each new release. You can transfer specific
user configuration information into your new database from an existing
one using the K9DUR PowerSDR Data Transfer Utility
(http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50327.aspx).

There is now a KC article that documents the FlexWire v2 connector pin
outs for the FLEX-1500.

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50449.aspx

Just a general comment to all. The FLEX-1500 hardware is in
pre-production beta testing now. This is the time where documentation
on the radio hardware starts showing up in the Knowledge Center and the
Owner's manual starts getting put together.

I know everyone is very excited and anxious to know more about the new
FLEX-1500. I know because I resemble my previous remark. We will be
making every effort to provide the information you desire regarding the
FLEX-1500.

But you have to take into account that the engineering team at FlexRadio
is very busy working on multiple hardware projects, so questions that
might show up on the Reflectors may take a little bit of time to get
answered. This is because we have to get feedback from the correct
person in order to get you the the correct answer.

We are monitoring the reflectors and will get you the answers to your
questions, so if you do not see an immediate response, please be patient
and do not jump to any conclusions until you see an official response.
We all know what happens when we make assumptions...

Everyone have a great weekend and keep on Flexin'

OK, that's your prerogative.

It has one. It comes out on the mic jack.

I hope Flex reconsiders, the SDR1000 was bad enough.
It is easier, more reliable, and cheaper in IMHO, for Flex to just

include

such a simple thing!

I guess I am confused as it appears to me that it is already there,
just on the mic jack and not repeated on the back panel.

I am not interested in no brainer projects like that.

Well, in my experience playing with transverters and preamps located
at the antenna I don't see any way around having a sequencer. Even
when using relay switching I would use the mic PTT line to key the
changeover relay and the contacts on the changeover relay to key the
transmitter. It is really nice that Flex provides sequenced contact
closures with the F5K but rolling one with a microcontroller using
power MOSFETs as switches seems pretty simple to me.

But I understand the gist of what you are saying, just not the part
about how they didn't provide a PTT line.

2010-02-11 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all Flexers,

We are aware of a defect in PowerSDR v1.18.4 where the PA bias current
does not turn off after transmit and are working on an immediate fix.

As a precaution, we are asking all Flexers not to use PowerSDR v1.18.4
if you plan on transmitting and we have removed it from the downloads page.

We will post the fixed version as soon as this software defect has been
repaired and tested.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR v1.18.4 is now available for download

2010-02-10 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all Flexers,

FlexRadio Systems has released PowerSDR v1.18.4 and it is available for
immediate download and use. This is a maintenance software release of
PowerSDR 1.18.x and contains several critical bug fixes. It is
recommended that you upgrade to PowerSDR v1.18.4 at your earliest
convenience.

You can download the PowerSDR v1.18.4 installation software using this
URL: http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=312

It is recommended that you review the PowerSDR release notes prior to
installing a new version of PowerSDR to make sure you have the proper
versions of .NET, firmware and FLEX Firewire driver recommended for the
release. In addition, a list of bug fixes included in the v1.18.4
release are listed in the release notes.

The v1.18.4 release notes can be accessed from the Knowledge Center
using this URL: http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50444.aspx

Re: [Flexradio] The FLEX-1500 to make its debut at Hamcation 2010

2010-02-10 Thread Tim (W4TME)
Why no antenna? Ever tried to receive signals in a Faraday cage (inside
a metal hamfest building)? Demos don't go over very well when you have
no signals to demodulate. Using pre-recorded, pre-processed IQ data
files is the standard way FLEX radios are demonstrated at hamfest where
it is not being used for something like a special event station.

As a practice, FlexRadio Systems pulls a random unit from the production
line to run the specification tests on and those are the ones published.
This method provides a better real world evaluation of the radio
rather than taking one and tweaking it to get max performance out of it
and then publishing those numbers. Obviously, they have their lab specs
to use as a baseline for quality purposes. I suspect you will begin to
see some range numbers, but if history repeats itself, it will have
specs that blow most radios costing 2-3x as much out of the water. It
will be the best performing QRP radio you can buy.

Re: [Flexradio] Spur in PSK31 output even with no rf out into Dummy load.

2010-02-01 Thread Tim (W4TME)
What you are seeing is a harmonic of the AF generated by the sound card
program. These are to be expected. Some digi mode programs do a better
job of suppressing them than others.

Ti eliminate it on the RF output, define a TX filter that only has
bandwidth for the fundamental.

Re: [Flexradio] Am I stuck now?

2009-12-21 Thread Tim (W4TME)
Lets find out if you actually need the preamp modification first. Using
the KB article listed below, see if your TRX board is a revision that
needs updating. If it is, then contact Klaus, the FlexRadio Systems EU
representative in order to find out what your options are.

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50430.aspx

You shouldn't be too disappointed. The mod is a performance enhancement
and not a fix, per se. In addition, FlexRadio has chosen to do it for
free (until the end of the year), rather than just come out with a
different version of the radio, leaving you stuck with an under
performing radio like so many other radio manufacturers have done in the
past.

BTW, Klaus was copied on this e-mail.

It was a bit disappointing to buy it, then find out that it needs work.
