[Flexradio] Remote timeout

2011-03-13 Thread Harryhahn
Good question Gary. VOX also helps you with a stuck key in the operation.
It would be nice if the SDR had a stuck key timeout option that would
disconnect after x minutes in a stuck key situation. I did have this happen
one time when I was tuning the outboard AT-Auto autotuner to go to a new
frequency. DDUTIL now helps that as the freq. is auto changed on the AT-Auto
tuner by the serial port.

With your particular remote setup, how do you protect against loss of
Internet during transmit? Some kind of timeout is a requirement that needs
to be met and I wonder how you are doing it? Is VOX dealing with this in
the same way?

[Flexradio] Remote operation and New software release

2011-03-11 Thread Harryhahn

Guys, the new software loaded and works fine. The ALC works now, finally
and the output power is under control for the very first time on my 5000.

The only issue I found in the new SDR RC2 software was that VOX on VAC
does not work. Did I miss a new check box?? It seems that VOX was working on
VAC then not working, on different software SDR versions. VOX is really
required for remote operation so you don't have to use the MOX button. Also,
the
latency of Skype or any VoIP connection is such that you can cut off your
words with a manual operation, whereby VOX stops transmitting on the SDR
computer when incoming audio stops.

With respect to remoting your SDR, I have been doing this for years on
numerous conventional and SDR rigs using various remote desktops, including
GOTOMY PC, Pocket Cloud, Microsoft remote desktop, and Teamviewer. Teamviewer
by far is the best as when you use it computer to computer, there is a
BUILT IN VoIP tunnel that allows you to connect to the SDR PC for your visual
and audio without using Skype, etc. Teamviewer also has an IPad app that
works great. The IPad app DOES NOT have the VoIP tunnel working on it
(yet??), so you must use Skype to connect to the home PC. Teamviewer is a
free
app and does not require any static IP address entrees and works from
anywhere!!!

[Flexradio] Using Teamviewer Freeware for remote operation

2010-05-05 Thread harryhahn

I have not seen this on the net here before, so I will throw it out there.
Teamviewer, which I have been using for some time as a remote dektop, was
upgraded with some new features. I had not tried them until a couple months
ago, but the one that is real exciting is the fact that they now have a VoIP
tunnel. This allows a VoIP audio connection between your Flex desktop and the
remote computer. Previously you had to use Skype or IPsound (I have used both)
to make your audio connection, but now that is not necessary. The audio is
fantastic. I never liked Skype audio, and preferred IPsound. The IPsounf
program had too many issues with it. If a knowledge base document would help
the group, I would be willing to write one for the good of the cause. This is
absolutley the best remote operation possiblility you can use!!!

[Flexradio] SGC-500

2010-03-13 Thread Harryhahn
Howard: I am curious why you need to switch your SGC for bands when it is
an automatic function of the SGC-500. I own two of them and they work fine
without external band switching. I do use external switching to reset the
SGC if it senses a bad SWR, etc condition, plus I do remote switch AC on/off,
etc. using the Wavenode WN-2 controls. Also use a Palstar AT-AUTO for
automatic antenna tuning.

Hi everyone.

I am pleased to announce that the ATAUTO s/w (available from
N3ZH_Software yahoo group) now supports the CK1610 RS232 relay box.

The CK1610 is available here:
http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/elec/ck1610.htm
It is the only low cost relay box I can find that works from a DB9 COM
port.
It has 8 relays and 4 isolated inputs.
This relay box is available as a kit or fully assembled.
I purchased mine fully assembled and tested for about $130 including
shipping.
I did not buy the recommended 12 volt power supply because I already
owned a PS that will work.
This box needs 12 volts - not 13.8 volts - not 9 volts - it needs 12
volts - 12 volts.

My laptop has no parallel port - (my wife's desktop computer also has no
parallel port).
Parallel ports seem to be dead - many new motherboards don't have a
parallel port, and laptops have long abandoned providing parallel
ports. The USB/Parallel port adapters are only for printing and do not
show up as a real Parallel port.

The solution?
This CK1610 relay box!

It is now auto-band switching my SGC-500 amplifier.

[Flexradio] Good News on Remoting the 5K

2009-06-22 Thread Harryhahn

For VE7XS and others.as a remote control Flex 5K user, here is some
good news.

I have new beta software I am testing now installed in my Wavenode WN-2
that allows NEW momentary control of a relay that WILL be installed in my Flex
5K to turn on and off the Flex. This has been an issue for those that have
a 5k for some time. Wavenode (Al Burros), at my request, has made outputs
1 and 2 of the Wavenode optionally a pulsed output. Configure the relay
operation in setup for momentary or latched. I hope to have the relay
installed in my Flex 5 K soonon the road this week so it will have to
wait.
Theoretically here will be the new operation for remote:

- Asus motherboard on PC has remote wake up which turns on PC
- Wavenode program turns on 5K (I confirm power on for 5k on Wavenode
logical inputlights Green)
- Turn on AC for SGC power amp supply, and powers on antenna switcher
(removes antennas from ground also)
- Wavenode WN-2 used to reset SGC-500 power amp if amp trips for some
reason (You can see if it trips as logical input on Wavenode shows SGC tripped)

Audio is Skype with VAC and remote control is using Windows Remote Desktop

Of course, the Wavenode WN-2 gives me beautiful power out display, splatter
scope, spectrum output of Power AMP, etc. If you have a 5K with a power
amp, the Wavenode WN-2 is a must! Now also use it to power on your Flex
5K.

Is anyone having any issues with Ddutil causing the amount of CPU processing
time to be extremely high. When I leave it running for a while, I notice my CPU

[Flexradio] Remote using the Flex 5K plus necessary software

2009-03-11 Thread harryhahn

Lot's of guys e-mailed me and I replied about remote operation individually.
Here it is for the others that repleid on the net.

I run the Flex 5000 into an SGC 500. Running a 17 volt power supply for the
SGC, I get
800 clean watts out on most bands, about 600 on 20 meters. I use a static IP
address and Windows desktop to run the station. ddutil controls the Palstar
AUTO antenna tuner. I have a Wavenode WN-2 power meter that has software
controlled
outputs to turn on AC for things, and control antennas, etc. Ddutil has a rotor
control and much more. I have used Skype for audio and virtual audio cables and
the Flex VAC for audio to the rig. All that works fine. I really prefer IP
sound
(freeware) for the audio, Again it requires a static IP address (I have four at
my place) but it has better quality audio bandwidth (adjustable) and EQ filters
that can be set to EQ the connection. The remote operation is the same whether
you are in your house and remoting it over your LAN, or over the internet. You
just need about 500k of bandwidth up and down for good performance.

?

Make sure your set your Windows Remote Desktop Options tab for Local
resources to leave the audio at remote location. This eliminates the audio
coming back from the remote site in both windows and IP sound, etc. There are
issues when you do not properly check that box.

?

I love the SGC as it is the best for remote as it has impeccable protection
circuits. If you happen to have the SGC
kick out because of high SWR etc, you will see the power drop on the wavenode
on
your screen. You then can reset the SGC remotely using the logical output of
the
WN-2 tied to the remote power connection control on the SGC.

?

2008-12-15 Thread harryhahn

If you use a current limiting resistor to both sides of the balanced mike line
as, Bill AD5OL suggests, this will work. However, and very important, make
certain that there is a DC blocking capacitor in series with the audio input so
you do not send DC back into that circuit. I do not know what the input of the
SDR looks like, but you do not want to pass unwanted DC into a circuit that
does not want to see it!!

[Flexradio] Problem with 5K and Henry Classic

troubleshooting, ie put the 5K into the dummy, restart the radio,
restart the computer, change versions of the program, call Dudley and
run the bias routine. It appears that the finals may have crapped out. I
spent the day kicking the dog at every opportunity (not really) and
shipped the unit back to it's birthplace. In the meantime, I dropped my
Kenwood TS-870 into place, driving the Henry, and all seems well.
Naturally I was hesitant to do that but after several hours of
operation, all is fine. I have been racking my brain trying to figure
out what might have happened. Questions like: maybe the Henry has some
very slow relays for xmt/rcv switching. The Flex software has settings
to allow for that but I am using the defaults.

Is anybody else out there using similar amplifiers, Henry consoles,
L4B's, SB220's and have you had problems? Ideas?

Re: [Flexradio] AM Broadcast interference

2008-07-09 Thread Harryhahn
I recommend to try a relatively inexpensive fix. This works for only
resonant (in band), single band antennas. I used this method for contest
stations
that I built back in the 80's where we had multi op stations operating side by
side. We had burned out front ends on receivers from adjacent stations with
huge harmonic energy. This is also a good field day trick for club stations
with multi transmitters/receivers.

Use a 75 ohm coax stub with an in line T-Connector on the antenna. Cut the
length of 75 ohm cable with velocity factor figured in so that it is resonant
in the center of the desired operating band. This produces a band pass filter
so out of band signals are rejected. Also works on transmit to reduce
harmonics. It will take LOTS of power, so do not worry about burning it out!
Also
gives you some lightening protection as it grounds the antenna and eliminates
any static that builds up on the antenna. You can add multiple stubs to
increase the Q of the bandpass filter, but in most cases, one will do it!!

Hello to all,

I have an issue here with a 50KW AM BC station about 6 miles away. I have
IMD/spurs/carriers all the way up from 160M to past 20M. The signal strength
of the AM 640kc station is -3dbm on the flex meter and I have crud all over
hell's half acre up thru the bands...most are just above the QRN, but
sometimes not ;-)This AM powerhouse always mixes with another station
beating together on frequencies that show up across the bands.

I purchased a KIWA BCB reject filter and put it in the RX1/2 in/out loop and
use the antenna selection option to put this inline and it definitely knocks
down the 640kc AM 70db when the flex is in GEN mode tuned to 640kc. The
problem is that when the BCB filter is inline with RX1 loop, I have major
intermod all over the bands...on 20M I heard CHU this afternoon at 14.030,
+/- propagation and AM carriers all over the spectrum, some are S9+10 in DSB
mode on 20M.

If I take the KIWA BCB reject filter and put it inline with the antenna in
any ANT1/2/3 port life is good...all the crud is gone, but I can't TX with
the KIWA BCB filter.

Anyone care to figure this one out? I know W9NQN TX/RX filters are an
option, but a $60 RX only should have worked IMHO.

Enjoy what's left of our holiday weekend!

[Flexradio] Flex 5000 audio quality

2008-07-08 Thread harryhahn
I disagree that the 5000 audio is bad. I run both radios and they are fed with
a common microphone through a mixer. They both sound about the same when I
slightly tweak the eq. I run a PR-40, large diapghragm condensor, small element
condensor and a whole bunch of other mikes. I can make them sound as good or
as bad as I want!!!??

It's certainly your right to disagree Dale but I've heard the same
comments from two of the best ears that I know. If they say it's
distorted you can bet the house on it that it is.? I'm talking about
guys that tell me when I'm a 1/2 cycle off frequency and nitpick like
that. ?I hear this same distortion in the 5000 too and my ears are
terrible. I don't see it as a show stopper but it isn't flex perfect
like it should be.
I've seen several guys struggle to get the 5000 sounding decent (and
they did eventually)

The SDR 1000 on the other hand is no struggle at all to get sounding
good and it doesn't have that weird distortion like the 5000.
The guys that I've talked to on the 5000 that sounded good were running
very ,very expensive mics. The guys running Heil mics had typical
communications sounding audio and you could no doubt hear the
distortion.
The 1000 doesn't really care. Most any mic sounds good on the 1000.

You didn't say what sound card you were running with your 1000 Dale?

You will LOVE the audio in the Flex 5K. The discussions were on
intelligibility and SSB articulation in general and had nothing to do with the
FLEX,
except to say that the 5K has incredible audio whether you feed it by the mike
jack or by the line in!! You can make the audio in your new Flex sound anyway
that pleases you!!!

Re: [Flexradio] Muddy Sound ...etc.

2008-06-05 Thread Harryhahn
Having ran Astatic in the 1980's, and being one of the first people in the
country to be licensed for the first audio equalization processes for room
reinforcement systems, let me add my comments to the articulation and
microphone
discussion. The original D-104 was chosen by so many hams, as the crystal
element was designed to emphasize the 300-3,000 hz range. Most articulation is
added in the 2,000 to 3,000 hz area and the D-104 had a bump there. Also
the D-104 had output (Hi-z) that could almost drive the modulators of the time
with no pre-amp...Hi, Hi. First SSB rigs were designed to limit the response
in that same range, so that mike was popular for the new SSBers. As
Kenwood and others developed rigs that gave better response in the low end and
low-z, dynamic mikes were now becoming popular, Bob Heil made his living by
producing microphones that have a taylored response for typical rigs and
applications. Bob's PR-40 is a professional, flat response mike, more suited
for
broadcast, than ham usage. It is much like a Sennhesier MD-441, in that there
are
certain characteristics that sound great for broadcast (and the PR-40 also
has a very directional cardiod pattern). As the PR-40 has the typical dynamic
proximity effect (get's boomy as you get closer to it), most hams have to
taylor the response with some eq in the low end to remove this effect.

I have tested the Flex-5k inputs with a noise generator and analyzer and it
is flat as a pancake. That is why the PR-40 sounds great (some minor touch up
of the 100-400 hz range) right in the front mike connector. In fact, after
running my PR-40 through my DSP audio rack, the sound is not too different
between the front panel 5K mike jack and my rack. You can have an articulate
100-3000hz SSB signal, so articulation and bandwidth are not tied together.
The
real problem is listener fatigue (as pointed out by the first gentleman in
this
chain). There have been many papers written over the years and published in
the Audio Engineering Society Journal. I designed and ran the sound system
for the AES meetings in L.A. for several years. Room acoustics (reverberation,
multi path signals or echo), noise (huge listener fatigue occurs when the
noise floor is within 10 db of signal), and our buddy articulation, are all
key
factors. Without a doubt, a wider bandwidth, higher fidelity signal, produces
less listener fatigue. Years ago, we did some tests where we used just high
frequency (300hz roll off) horns in sound reinforcement systems. We then
added bass horn cabinets to the same installations. The difference in listener
fatigue was huge. So, most importantly, in my audio tests and on air results
of
eqing an SSB signal, adding presence in the low end is essential to
providing a signal that produces lower listening fatigue. Adding extra
bandwidth in
the high end is great (and I do it all the time where it does not interfere
with others), but the low end presence is still the key!!!

[Flexradio] 5K drivers

2008-05-31 Thread harryhahn

I learned a lesson that cost me five hours of time today that all of you might
want to learn from. My driver update program updated my 1394 firewire port.
When it did, the 5K did not work. I tried reloading drivers and they would NOT
LOAD. Tim Ellison helped me by asking if my 1394 port was recognizing the 5K.
Although?APPEARED that it was?seeing it, by asking all the right questions, the
drivers still would not load. When I UNINSTALLED the 1394 port in Hardware
Manager and restarted the PC, the 1394 port was REINSTALLED by Windows and then
I reloaded the 5K drivers by the book!! Everything now works.

Re: [Flexradio] Sticky relay

2008-05-23 Thread Harryhahn

The sticky relay on the 5K still happens to me with new firmware, about
every 100 transmissions or so (no pattern). It does happen more often when I am

using VOX. I do not know if it happens more often on VOX because of the
constant send/receive transitions that take place, or the fact that there is a
higher chance of catching a transients. I have ruled out any transients to the

amplifier switching (I noted one flexer had made a remark about that in the
past that he only had problems when using the linear amplifier). I have a
solid
state switching device I designed, external to the Flex 5k that has
absolutely no transients. I do have a theory though that it may be occurring
when you
are transitioning between T/R at the same time a high RF current is present
on the coax. RF from an amp can be present on the outside of the coax that is
connected to the transceiver. Although this does not affect my SDR-1000 or
Kenwood transceivers, it does happen when I use the 5K. I was thinking of
placing a torrid on the coax from the 5k to eliminate RF on the coax and see
if
that helps. P.S. I have everything in my shack grounded properly so no
grounding lessons please!!

I was talking to a couple of my friends, Bill and Fritz, who are both proud
owners of 7800s. Bill travels a bit and was interested in remote operation
of his 7800. This peaked my interest and yesterday morning I set out to
remote my Flex-5000A.
I found a free product on www.logmein.com that provided the necessary
function for control of a remote PC ( I know, I am cheap ). I installed the
client on the XP machine that runs the radio and set the remote software up
on the MacBook Pro (requires a plug in for Safari). Security is pretty
good requiring a user name and password for Logmein and a second password to
access the remote computer.
With very little effort, I was moving about the console, changing bands,
audio settings, and so forth on the Power SDR Console from my Mac.
At this point I installed Skype on the Mac (it was already on the PC) and I
was in business.
I was suprised at how easy it was and confirmation of my efforts occurred
this a.m. as I used the remote to keep my sked with Bill and others.
There is quite a bit of latency in the control of the 5000, so your contact
needs to be aware that you are on a remote. CW operation using CWGet and
CWType remotely with the 5000 was flawless. On a good clean signal you do
not even need the audio connection. :-)

[Flexradio] Power Amp recommendation

I use a SGC 500 with my SDR-1000 as my low power power amp and an
Ameritron AL-1500 for my legal limit amp. The SGC is perfect for my internet

over temp protection and has automatic band change. I do use the PTT control

What experience do others have?

I use two LARGE sealed wet marine batteries in my shack. They now run
about $150 each, but are great. One is for the radios, the other for the SGC.
I
have two 30 amp switching supplies that keep the batteries up. Keep the amount
of cable from the battery to the SGC short and your peak volts will stay up
and there wil be no faults..

I too will get a 5000. Never had a drift issue with the AL-1500. Rock
solid!! Takes little power to drive.

[Flexradio] Using your Flex via VPN or remote Internet connection

2007-10-26 Thread Harryhahn
How many of you have used your Flex via a remote connection? I have used my
TS-2000 successfully via Go to My PC and Skype. I like the remote powering of
the TS-2000 through the Ham Radio Deluxe. This works well. I am adding a
transistorized power amp to this combo.

What I would like to do is to control my Flex-1000 from the internet. The
challenge has been the audio connection would have to be through analog
connections to the Skype audio. I have tried using the virtual connection
through
the SDR software and it just will not work. This would be the way to do it,
but
you would have to map the PC audio out to the SDR audio in. This is the same
difficulty you have playing back a WAV file on the PC to the SDR.

I am sure someone has done it and that is why I am sending this out to the
group. Also, who knows of a good ethernet remote control (multiple) switch that
I can control the power on my different equipment (and antenna selection).

Thanks
Harry
