[Flexradio] Set VAC2 Levels in PSDR?

2016-08-14 Thread Paul - K6HR

For the life of me I do not know how I managed to get the VAC2 sliders to
appear in PowerSDR. I clicked on the RX2 button and that caused it to switch
back to displaying the VAC1 sliders. Just how does one toggle this display?

Hello,
I am having problems getting the app to work properly.
Panadapter and sound continue to work properly but when I open a control
window and scroll it up or down, the program freezes. No functions work.  I
have a fourth generation ipad with 64GB memory. When tuning I click on the step
tab, again the program freezes.  I use the tuning wheel and it works for a
second then the program freezes. As I mentioned, the panadapter and sound
continue to work. I tried a completely different router running by itself (not
on the internet or any other computers) and it did the same thing.  No other
applications that I know of are running.

I have the latest OS installed.  Maybe a problem with that??  Any help would be
appreciated.

My experience with N1MM+ is that you must use the SAME serial port for
both N1MM+ and fldigi. Otherwise lockup occurs. I have only used with
PowerSDR, so I have no specifics for SMARTSDR.

Subject: [Flexradio] Problem with 3000 and PowerSDR

I have the Flex 3000. I downloaded the KE9NS latest release.
It started up just fine. I started going through the recommendations for max
operation.
I changed the audio buffer to 192000 and PowerSDR crashed.
Now every time I start PowerSDR I get the notice that a firmware update is
required before opening.
This happens with the original PowerSDR 2.7.2 version too.
I have said 'Yes' many times but each time I get this notice.
I completely uninstalled PowerSDR and reinstalled a fresh copy.
It went through the initial calibration step but then the firmware
upgrade notice continues to come up when trying to start PowerSDR.
Anyone have any clue as to what happened or how to fix it? Is it
bricked?Thanks,NE5IL

Re: [Flexradio] FireWire replacement

2016-01-19 Thread Paul

Hi Alan

Firewire has pretty much vanished from video production work. The main
use in the past was in transfer from tape to the editing computer
systems and so cameras and video decks used to come with a Firewire
port. The copying across (capture) was done in real time. We still keep
a couple of video decks at work connected by Firewire but they are used
only for ingesting archive material.

The industry is now tapeless. Cameras store the pictures onto memory
cards. At work some of our cameras use P2 cards (a Panasonic proprietary
format) and the Canon XF305s and C300s we have use standard 64GB Extreme
CF cards. The Canon & Nikon DSLRs we use for video use CF or SD cards.
So to get the pictures into the editing systems it's now a case of just
moving the files.

Going tapeless has several advantages. It's much faster to get the files
into the editing computer, there is no need to ingest the pictures in
real time, and the cameras have far less moving parts. The reliability
of the old tape systems was often a problem.

There's a downside too. It is very easy to format a card and so loose
all the material that was shot onto it! Digital files are of course
easily erased with the click of a mouse. As a result a new job has
evolved in the industry, the DIT (Digital Information Technician) or
Data Wrangler. He/she is responsible for making sure the files are
safely backed up with multiple copies to hard drives before the cards
are re-formated.

But I digress

NewEgg still lists Firewire cards for PCIe, PCMCIA and ExpressCard.

Flex chose Firewire because it was the only technology that would do
the job. Even USB 3.0, which was still new at the time, wouldn't do
it. And at the time, Firewire was still widely used for audio and
video editing equipment; is it still?

Now that most of the computing power is in "the box" in the 6K series
rigs, a lot less "traffic" passes between the rig and the computer you
connect to it, so Ethernet is fine.

Paul,

Your DAX not being consistent maybe the way windows enumerates the sound
devices when Windows boots. You need a speaker in the Playback properties
of Sound Properties and a line in or mic in the Record , this is just to
keep default sounds off the DAX drivers. If you don't have something
plugged into your sound card, just put a blank plug there, Windows doesn't
care , as long as something is there.

On some of the latest versions of Wsjt , open a second slice, have an A and
B slice available. Seems WSJT is always looking for VFO A and B. If you use
TS2000 or Ts480, either one works for me. It hangs and fails the CAT Test
mode otherwise.

[Flexradio] Persistence and DAX issues -6300

2015-09-01 Thread Paul Mandel
I have two issues that seem to dog me. I am running the current release of
the software although I had the same issue on .14.My DAX issue, when I
quit SmartSDR sometimes (most of the time but not always) programs such as
WSJT will not see a steam. When I open up DAX it shows no slice even
though I have the #1 slice chosen. If I choose the #2 slice about 50% of
the time I can get it to see the data. The only sure fire method is to
reboot the computer.

The persistence issue has to do with the transmit enable button. I have
tried reinitializing the 6300 and I still have the issue. I have saved a
totally new profile and I still have the issue.

Any help is appreciated. I wanted to try the community before putting in a
trouble ticket.

Why not charge for PowerSDR updates, like SmartSDR? I have gotten a lot of
free updates since I purchased my first Flex radio about 6 years ago, and I
am happy for that. But if future updates require a payment to Flex to keep
the code updated, I would certainly consider it. The software is more
mature than SmartSDR, and I would rather do that than lose my shirt and have
to give away my Flex 5000 and then fork over for a 6000 series rig.

I agree. My 5000 also has the VU installed and I would never consider
selling it. Where else will I ever find a transceiver as capable as this
one? It's not a sellers market at the moment and most of the 5000's coming

It is worth what someone will pay for it in a reasonable time. None of us
may agree or be pleased with the reality of the market place but it is what
it is. Lots of F5K-A coming on the market. Supply and demand are at work
in the free market capitalistic system. I have one and am not thrilled with
it being devalued but to me it is just a paper loss as I will not likely
sell it. Before I would sell cheap I'd keep it as a backup rig. It isn't
obsolete irrespective of how any game may have supposedly changed or
advertising hyperbole is worded. The 5K is still better than a whole
segment of new radios on the market.

The above is my opinion. You may choose to think otherwise, it is one of our
privileges not too infringed on yet.

[Flexradio] Power SDR on Mini-PC ?

2015-01-15 Thread Paul - K6HR
I'm considering setting up a remote QRP station using a Flex 1500.

Is there anyone already doing this that would make recommendations for a
mini PC etc?

I'm looking at a Dell Optiplex FX160 and wondering if Power SDR will run OK
on it.

Re: [Flexradio] hercules

2015-01-11 Thread Paul - K6HR

Bill is 100% on the money. I have been in the MI retail business for over 20
years with the nation's largest music dealer. The Hercules stuff is plastic,
relatively inexpensive, and the return rate is somewhat high. As for the
different models, all you'll need to do is map all the controls yourself. I
understand the discontinued model had a mapping for Flex that someone had
put together, but all models of controllers should be easily mapped out with
a little effort. In this case however I think the OP has already made a
purchase of the Hercules hardware to utilize the prepackaged mapping.

Every time I mention this someone seems to get offended and feel the need
to flame me, but it bears saying again. The Hercules controllers are
garage-band quality. For many people they work very well and their owners
love them but you'll need to treat them gently. If you push your gear hard
or move it from place to place often, you may find their lifespan limited.
Someone will now respond by telling me that he has used a Hercules on 20
DXpeditions including a week on the moon with nary a glitch. To which I
reply, GREAT! Just keep in mind that the Hercules brand is far from
professional quality. If you want a controller that will really haul the
freight, look at models from Allen & Heath or Vestax.

Do I have any personal cred to say these things? No, not really. I went
SDR to get away from knobs and switches. But I have a son who for twenty
years has sold this kind of gear in the professional market, including many
Hercules controllers. He gets more of them back for repair/replacement
than any other brand.

Hope everyone's new year is off to a great start.

Bill
KJ4SLP
Bill, there are several successor models from Hercules that are supported
and seem to work as well or better than the MP3 LE. Look on Tobias'
website for a list of supported models.

Re: [Flexradio] Garbled output

2014-07-20 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

Hi Dave,

Any chance you're using a HEIL mic adapter?

I had garbled audio from RF getting into the mic connector. As it turned out
the mic was wired as 'Yaesu', but required the chassis ground pin to be
connected to the mic ground pin on the adapter. I soldered a tiny jumper
between the two pins and the problem was completely eliminated. YMMV.

I had this problem a while back and tried everything I could think of and
followed all the advice given.

In the end I reflashed my 5K and problem solved, should the problem come back
again it's now the second thing I would do.
The first would be to plug in a spare hard drive on which I have a clean OS +
PSDR installed against which I would check that the 5K
firmware was not corrupt.

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR freezing

2014-07-12 Thread Paul Playford
It is too bad you have deleted your restore points. I suggest you reinstall
Windows and start over. PITA, but remember - Windows is Windoz.

I have gone so far that when I get Windoz installed the way I want with the
basic software I always use, I then create a system image.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/create-system-image-in-windows-7-8/

Is Windows a Virus?

No, Windows is not a virus.
Here's what viruses do:

1. They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.

2 Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they
do so - okay, Windows does that.

3 Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does
that too.

4 Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable
programs and systems. Sigh... Windows does that, too.

5 Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow
(see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. Yup, Windows does that, too.

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences:
Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems,
their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become
more sophisticated as they mature.

So Windows is not a virus.

It's a bug.

It's hard to believe PowerSDR can be so hard to troubleshoot?
I have to reboot now, PowerSDR only ran for 15 minutes that time.

Subject: [Flexradio] PowerSDR freezing

I have been working on this problem for several weeks now and I hope some
one out there can help me with a solution.

My radio is a F5k and it works perfect on my i5/W7/64 bit laptop using a
SIIG Firewire 400 2-Port (6-pin) ExpressCard so my radio and fire wire
cable test OK.

My radio has worked perfect on my home PC for several years but some thing
has changed or it has developed a fault and now PowerSDR will freeze
randomly any where from a few seconds to a few hours. Some times the
panadapter will freeze and the audio will stop and turning off and on
PowerSDR

will solve the issue. Some times turning off and on PowerSDR will grey out
the panadapter and some times turning off PowerSDR will generate an error
message "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application" and PowerSDR
will crash requiring both the F5k and PowerSDR to be turned off and on
again.

I have tried all the things Flex recommend such as disabling power savings,
using the legacy driver, factory defaults, reloading PowerSDR, no over
clocking etc etc and nothing changes.

I replaced the SIIG FireWire 400 2-Port PCIe card in my PC with a spare
SIIG FireWire 400 3-Port PCI card (in a different slot) and I still have
the exact same problem, so the problem is not the fire wire card either.
The problem is a software problem in my PC. My PC is a high performance
machine purchased specifically to run my F5k and I should not be having any
issues. I have tried using different drivers for the FireWire cards and the
problem still remains.

System details are;

PowerSDR v2.7.2
Max DPS ~ 190 us
Safe mode 1
Sampling rate 96000 Hz
Buffer size 2048

Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40 GHz (BIOS up to date)
RAM 16 GB
SIIG FireWire 400 2-Port PCIe card and high quality cable (worked perfect
for several years)
SIIG FireWire 400 3-Port PCI card and high quality cable (Made no
difference, problem still occurs)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (All updates complete)

Any help appreciated,

Craig

There is (or was) an over-voltage protection circuit in the RM-35 - it just

That's why you should add an Over-Voltage protection module to the power

Dudley,

I agree. Our club had an Astron RM-35 that had the series pass transistor
fail (short). The output voltage went to the maximum provided by the
transformer & the 2 rigs connected to it were damaged. The Yaesu FT-950 was
repairable, but a Yaesu FM rig was not economical to repair.

A problem with linear supplies is that if the series transistor fails, the
result is a serious over-voltage situation.

Windows 7 & 8 have a habit of automagicly setting the wrong default
devices. You need to right click on the speaker icon, select playback
devices, and correct the defaults. In some configurations, you may
find yourself having to do this over and over again. Others are quite
stable. Depends on how many things you plug in and out. If the
hardware changes in any way, it may move stuff around on you again.

Everyone,

The SmartSDR software upgrade policy is listed on the web site under the
SmartSDR product page in the Upgrades tab
(http://www.flexradio.com/amateur-products/flex-6000-signature-series/smartsdr/)

Flex Radio general policy with regards to SmartSDR can be found here. I think
most questions are answered in this citation.

Also, I have found that direct questions about SmartSDR when addressed directly
to FlexRadio are answered quickly and clearly.

David, the subject of annual charge for the software for the 6xxx series

work might not be a deal breaker for those who buy the top of the line FLEX

I currently run a FLEX-1500 as a sub-receiver of my Ten-Tec OMN-VII and

I looked around on the flex website for answers to these questions but

2014-04-25 Thread Paul Jursinic
I own a Flex5000 and have found the notch filter in PowerSDR to be an extremely
useful tool. I love it!

However, I have in the past 6 months been experimenting with an RTL2832U
receiver used as a SDR component in the IF of an IC-728 transceiver. The
RTL2832U is controlled with HDSDR software. The HDSDR software has a notch
filter that can place multiple notches in the receiver bandpass. This filter
combination compares well with the PowerSDR notch filter. So, here is an
example of software and hardware that compare well with my Flex5000 and
PowerSDR.

Earlier today I went looking for 7P8JR on RTTY and found him and a Spanish
station transmitting almost on top of each other. I really wanted 7P8JR but the
ED station was making it hard to hear him so I created a TNF, made it very
narrow and
stuck it on the ED's space frequency. Then I created another one and put it on
the mark frequency of 7P8JR of the Spanish station. That gave me about 90%
solid copy and I made the QSO (my Elecraft KPA-500 helped a LOT too!).
Is there any other non-Flex rig that can do what I did above? Makes me feel bad
for the rest
I still love my 5000!

The original article claimed that the problem arose at UHF frequencies, and
suggested that transverters shouldn't be used with the Flex.
As expected, many hams did not read the entire article, and now claim that
Flex's are a polluter.
Tell me, have you ever seen evidence of this? Has anyone told you this?
More important to me, has the original article every been independently
confirmed by a lab that is unaffiliated with other SDR software?

one setting fits all? The factory sends out one setting, how do we
determine the right one for out individual radio set ups? Based on the
knowledge I have now it's trial and error, but there must be a better way
based on the engineering of the product. Can anyone share knowledge so we

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 102, Issue 15

2013-10-18 Thread Paul Jursinic
Everyone,

I think the measurements and discussion by Leif Asbrink,
http://www.sm5bsz.com/dynrange/dubus313.pdf, is of interest to anyone in the
amateur radio hobby. It is of particular interest to VHF and UHF operators
where the noise floor to maximum signal amplitude may be greater than the 77 dB
signal difference between the carrier and sideband noise of a Flex5000 at +/-
350 kHz from the carrier frequency.

For HF operation where atmospheric noise is predominant the sideband noise is
not an issue. For example, one is operating at 3.900 MHz and a very strong
Flex5000 carrier is detected at S9 + 20 dBm, which is -73 + 20 dBm = -50 dBm.
Based on Leif's measurements, peaks in sideband noise of -77 dBc will occur at
3.900 +/- 0.350 MHz, which are 3.550 and 4.250 MHz. The amplitude of these
noise peaks will be S9 - 77 dBm = -50 dBm - 77 dB = -127 dBm. On 3.550 MHz,
the CW portion of the 80 meter band, at a very quiet location, the typical
noise floor will be S5, which is 4 S units or 24 dBm below S9. Therefore, the
noise floor is at S9 - 4 S units = -73 dBm - 24 dBm = -97 dBm. So, the
sideband noise peak is -127 dBm - (-97 dBm), which is -30 dBm or 30 dBm below
the noise floor. Clearly, for HF operation the Flex5000 sideband noise is not
an issue.

Some questions for the Flex Company.

1. Has the Flex Company made measurements of the sideband noise amplitude?
2. How do these measurements compare to those reported by Leif?
3. Is the sideband noise amplitude still -77 dBc for current Flex5000s?
4. Is the sideband noise amplitude still -77 dBc for the Flex6000 series?

By the way, I am a happy user of a Flex5000 on the HF bands and am trying to
keep some perspective about the issues raised by Leif. I do not operate on VHF
and UHF so I cannot comment about those frequencies.

I think the above analysis is correct and hope others will add their ideas.

Re: [Flexradio] Question about Flex 5000 with second receiver. Receiver 2 antenna selection

2013-09-20 Thread Paul

I wanted to do the same thing. I have 6 antennas. I purchased an Array
Solutions 6-Pack antenna switch. It allows you to connect any of the six
antennas to any TWO radios. So I have my amp between the Flex ANT1 jack and
the 6-Pack (Radio 1). Then I connect the 6-Pack (Radio 2) to the Flex RX2.
The six pack will not allow you to select the same antenna for both "radios"
(safety interlock) Now I can have any combination.

Later I added a MicroHam Station Master and now have fully automated antenna
selection and can manually override if necessary using the selector switches
on the 6-Pack

Yes. After installing RX2 you will be able to choose the antenna on the
antenna menu.
Then just choose "RX1 Tap" and the second receiver will be listening on the
same antenna.
You may want to also check "disable RX2 on TX1 transmit" so you're not TXing

Hello
Is there a way to have both VAC1 and VAC2 active? I cant seem to get VAC2 to
un-ghost so I can select it. This is with the flex 3000 and PowerSDR 2.6.4
Although it was the same with 2.6.3.
I have to VAC’s setup in the VAC program.

I cant find anything in the Manual the forums or KB. (but that doesn’t mean
anything)

Re: [Flexradio] Radio disappeared

2013-06-01 Thread Paul

I recently saw an automatic Windows update for FTDI drivers on my W7 64
machine.
If you have Windows Update running for auto updates, it may be worthwhile
to investigate.

On another note this recent FTDI update resolved a problem I was having with
the MicroHam Station Master.

My Flex-3000 has disappeared. I'm running Win7 64 bit, VIA chip set
FDDI. I've tried three different FDDI cables and two different PCs (and
FDDIs) with PSDR v2.6.4 installed exactly according to instructions. I
get the same "No devices found" message in each case. What should I do next?

Hi Rich and all,

No, not the VFO display, rather the frequencies along the top edge of the
Panadapter itself.

This is what the OP was also referring to.

No, it has always read 14.215000, 6 digits after the decimal point the last
three in a smaller font and a different color (100Hz, 10Hz and 1 Hz) but
never two decimal points before or now in 2.6.4.

While we on this subject I'm wondering if it's just me or has the frequency
shown along the top of the panadapter changed to add a ".0" e.g. 14.215.0

I didn't notice this before v2.6.4 and have looked for a way to turn off the
.0 but don't find anything.

I thought it read: 14.215 previously

When I try to start WSJT it just comes up with a runtime error and shuts
down. Sometimes it just flashes, shuts down and does not display any errors.
In the past I would just reinstall it but that gets to be a pain if you have
to do this every few days.
Any suggestions as to what is going wrong here an how I can correct it? I
think that it is because the sound in/out setting are wrong but since it
won't ever fully start I can't check that.
Running WSJT 9.3 R2956 with a Flex-5000 and PSDR 2.5.3.

[Flexradio] SDR-1000 and PowerSdr v2.5.3 notes

2013-01-03 Thread Paul Shaffer
I just got powersdr v2.5.3 working with sdr-1000 -- I haven't worked with
this in a long time. I have the flex radio usb adapter and a delta-44 card.
This kb article is very helpful:

http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50012.aspx?Keywords=delta-44

OS: window 7 64-bit.
Delta-44 driver: 5.10.0.5074

I already had the sdr1kusb.dll and deltapnl.dll files on hand so I didn't
have to hunt for those.

1. you have fixed the mouse wheel bug, good

2. works with the latest delta-44 driver, doesn't insist on setting the
level api which isn't there anymore, good

3. I used the libusb-win32-bin-1.2.6.0.zip file from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/libusb-win32/files/libusb-win32-releases/1.2.6.0/.
They finally have a signed driver for this.

4. The powersdr UI is cutoff around the edges. I use 1920 x 1440 resolution
with large fonts, and this is probably a dialog scaling issue.

When will a WPF version of powersdr be available? I did a prototype of this
a few years ago and it's not that hard to do.

[Flexradio] 222MHz Transverter for FT-817 and Flex-1500 - updated version available

2012-12-26 Thread Paul Wade
222 MHz Transverter for the FT-817 -- updated
(from Jan 2003 QST)

I stopped making PC boards because some key parts were no longer
available. However, we recently located a stash of Power
Amplifier Modules and Toko filters at attractive prices.
Before making more boards, I updated it to Revision 3 with
more options to improve flexibility and reduce part obsolescence.

Some of these include:
- configure for use with Flex-1500 SDR
- external LO for exact frequency
- modify for 144 or 432 MHz

Please see www.w1ghz.org for more details.
email w1ghz (at) arrl.net for prices

also added to web page:
- W1GHZ papers from recent MUD and EME conferences
- Flexible VCXO Locking board (GPS or other reference)
- updates to some other projects

73 & Happy New Year

In reference to the Flex 5000, what resolution bandwidth is used to generate
the pan display noise floor? I realize bandwidth may not be correct, maybe
bin width is more appropriate, I'm not sure. Also, does it vary if the
Sample rate and/or Buffer size is changed?

This is how it is supposed to work. MOX is not PTT. Those are lines on
the mic jack and a jack in the back. The MOX is how someone operating
remote through applications like Teamviewer or MS Remote Desktop keys up
the transmitter with audio input from VAC, not the station mic. With
"Allow PTT to Override VAC" set, then someone keying a PTT line (not
MOX) overrides the audio coming in from VAC and gets it from the local
station mic inputs.

At least that is how mine works. And it needs to work that way for my
purposes.

Thanks to those who pointed out VAC - that was it.
All my TX profiles had VAC turned on for the benefit of my SSTV and
digital programs.

It makes sense for it to work the way it does. You don't want mic audio
in the mix when using VAC. When I want do alternate between voice and
SSTV I can use the foot pedal for the voice transmissions. When I want
to use the MOX button I can disable VAC for that profile easily enough.

Most strange. I just backed up the DB, did a factory reset and started up
againand the
Channels work fine. If I import the exported DB, they mess up again.
Compared the Factory Reset
DB and my exported DB for BANDTEXT and they are the same...

Strange

Noticed something strange.   If I click on the 60m BAND button to cycle
through the channels, it
starts on:

5.349.954 (GEN COV)
5.346.50 (CH2)
5.357.00 (CH3)

And then back to 5.349.954

Is this just me?   This is a clean install.

I am in South Central Oklahoma and have radiant heat which for most of that
heating it is in the floor although I have opted for some radiant ceilings and
in the case of the master bath shower I have heated floor and walls.  I have
used some radiant electric heat previously. The only problems are the old style
thermostats with mechanical switch contacts i..e. bimetallic type as they make
sparks when switching a load and radiated RFI coming along the electrical
supply wires.

Thermostats based on electronic sensors (a thermistor or solid state junction)
don't make sparks and so don't generate RFI.  An electric resistance heating
floor pad or heating grid under the ceramic tile can radiate RFI from other
sources even when it doesn't make any of its own (solid state thermostat sensor
or thermistor) but that can be eliminated or reduced by taking some appropriate
measures for combating both differential and common mode RFI before the
operating current gets into the heating grid which would act like a RFI
radiating antenna.

I control the temperature of my shower walls with a sensor in the quickset
adhering the tile to the wall.

Note: the typical heaters for an aquarium are the mechanical contact type and
can generate significant RFI. You can buy or build a thermostat that uses a
thermistor or a solid state junction to control the heater and not get RFI.
Likewise some electric blankets, heating pads, heated seats in reclliners, and
so forth have contact type controllers which make RFI. Ditto the little
electric space heaters. You can easily build a solid state thermostatic
controller into which you plug a small space heater and avoid the RFI. Doingg
this requires no mods to the heater, Just turn its T'stat all the way up so it
doesn't switch on and off and let the solid state controller handle the
switching. I typically recommend a design that switches the current on at the
voltage zero crossing point and off at the zero current part of the AC cycle so
there is no switching noise.
