I too will miss Freevo. Unfortunately, one of the functions version 2.0 leaves
out, is the primary reason i used Freevo. To capture HD streams out of my cable
box, using a Hauppauge HD PVR. Fortunately,I recently bought a new laptop and
installed version 1.90. As long as it continues to work, I will use it. Thanks
Dirk, for the many hours of work you put into Freevo, as well as everyone else
who contributed in some way.

Hi,

I have no idea how many people still read this list, how many people
still use Freevo 1.x, and how many people use 2.0 from git (I guess that
is only me).

I failed to get a release of Freevo 2 out. I changed too much, a
complete rewrite and some parts are also written three or four times. My
fault, I know -- an error made years ago and when noticed, it was too
late to change it. And since I started a new job four years ago my time
working on Freevo got smaller and smaller every month. Jason also is
completely busy with his job.

I still say Freevo 2 is ready to use, but I will not release it. I'm not
sure it works with the latest clutter or gstreamer, I only know it works
for me. It lacks many important features such as DVD playback (I have a
BluRay Player) and TV recording. I do not need it and I don't have time
to code it.

Besides that, XBMC has a much bigger
community, UPnP is enough for many
people (even I use NAS + BubbleUPnP + TV sometimes) and new development
such as Chromecast will reduce Freevo's usefulness even further.

I will continue to use Freevo 2, I may even write an Android client for
it (after learning Python with Freevo which was useful for getting my
current job, hacking Android is a good next step), but I see no real
future for Freevo without a live community and more people hacking code.
If someone contributes something, I will add it. If someone needs help
to get Freevo 2 running, I will provide it.

Since we also lack someone maintaining the server we host and I do not
want to pay for something we don't need, I will shut it down at the end
of February. This means the SVN and the Wiki will be gone. If someone
wants a backup of the Wiki please tell me. The code is already on github
and will remain there. The mailing list on SF will continue and
so will
the mail server hosting freevo.org and all mail addresses will continue
to be valid.

Maybe after some time someone resurrects Freevo. I would love to pass
the maintainership over to someone just as I took it over from Krister
years ago. Maybe someone takes the kaa-stuff and writes something new
and better. I'm happy to assist and I think the same is true for Jason.
Maybe I will release something someday based on the current code.

It was a great time, I learned a lot and it was much fun.

Liz,

Just to add to what Adam said for recording, I think the commands I use for
recording a stream from my Hauppauge HD PVR will also work for recording on the
HD Home Run. I added this to the Freevo wiki for TV-DVB config 2 years ago. By
the way, after you start the record server, you'll need to open a second
terminal to start Freevo. When you go to schedule a recording, it will say the
record server is not on. Ignore the warning and schedule one anyway, it should
record. Let us know if you have any luck with this.I use video1, since video0
is my web cam. Here it is

VCR_CMD = 'cat/dev/video1 %(filename)s +  sleep %(seconds)s ; kill -9 $!'

TV_DEVICE = '/dev/video1' #(or video0)
TV_INPUT = 1 #(or 0)

Sorry, I need to slow down my thought process when reading. Obviously, the
amdcccle tool is the Catalyst Control. The only other idea i can suggest is to
use the vlc plugin. I do have better results using vlc, instead of mplayer. I'm
assuming you do have at least 2.2 ghz dual core processor, that's the only
other thing I can think of that could effect frame rate.

Paul,

I use the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 and like you, install the fglrx drivers.
When you downloaded the driver from AMD, you should have also gotten the
Catalyst Control Center automatically. It is the ATI graphics card control
software and one of the display options is for tear free to reduce tearing.
One difference between your system and mine is I'm running Xubuntu 11.10, not
Ubuntu (I can't stand Unity). I get to the Catalyst Control Center under
Settings Manager. I can't remember what the Ubuntu equivalent of that might
be, but it should be somewhere.

I recently upgraded my freevo box to a new motherboard that uses the AMD
Radeon HD 6410D chipset.

The only way I could get it to work was with the proprietary fglrx
driver (the open source driver requires KMS which is a sure-fire way of
crashing the kernel). But now I have the choice between 'tearing' of
video and a very low framerate (when I check the no tearing option in
the amdcccle tool).

Does anyone know what is the right way of getting this video chipset to
deliver the promised performance?

Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo 2.0

2011-07-26 Thread Phil Raymond
Hi James,

Glad to see I'm not the only freevo user interested in capturing streams in a
more user friendly way. Just as a sidebar to my previous email posted here a
week ago, the Hauppauge HD PVR converts analog component HD video from a cable
or satellite box to h.264 MP4 in a .m2ts container up to 1080i.From this
device, a parser isn't needed and because it's taking analog component out from
the box, it's not effected by any encryption, not even premium channels. A
simple usb 2.0 cable passes the stream from the HD PVR to the computer where
Freevo records it. A parser is still a great idea for those taking firewire out
from a cable box. The downside to that is it will only pass unencrypted
channels from the box. I might be the only Freevo user using this method of
recording, but it's worked like a charm for nearly 2 years and I have a library
of HD movies and concerts to show for it. I don't use Freevo to playback, since
I a have a Boxee Box connected to my home
 network for playback to my TV. However, I can play anything it has recorded
from Freevo on my computer using VLC, so I think i a VLC plugin for Freevo 2.0
would be useful for playback through Freevo.

Subject: Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo 2.0

I thought I'd chime in here too. I admit I haven't even tried any other
HTPC packages out there. I went with Freevo from the start and have been
using it ever since, from it's humble beginnings (in my hands) playing
back video and audio in a beige box tower, to the TV-tuning, cable box
controlling, radio streaming, podcast-playing powerhouse that it is now
(and in a nice Antec HTPC case, too).

I do like the customization and plug-in architecture. It allows me to
put in just the idlebar stuff I want, or if I'm not playing games I can
take that out completely. I will admit I feel you need to be more
knowledgeable to do the configuration... wading through the local_config
file can be daunting at times. It will be nice when it's eventually an
easy to use system of menus (either on-screen or via web).

And speaking of web, love the web interface. I use it almost exclusively
for scheduling and keeping tabs on programs. Just last week I was over
100 miles from home when I realized I'd forgotten to set a recording for
the Formula One race. All I had to do was whip out my phone, call up the
web page and set the recording. Piece of cake!

But the number one reason I love Freevo is because Python is not a
terribly hard language to learn. If Freevo had been written in C/C++, I
might have gotten enough motivation to contribute. But with it being in
Python, it was easy to jump in and start twiddling and tweaking and see
the results immediately, without any recompiling. The barrier to entry
for anyone who wants to contribute or even just modify their local
version is a lot lower, in my opinion. And that is good!

As for the future of it, I'm eager to see Freevo 2.0. Just listening to
everyone talk about the plans in these last few e-mails has gotten me
excited all over again. I don't know how much I can contribute just yet,
but a few things sparked my interest:

* Streaming source - I don't know if I can help make it happen, but I
vote for it. I haven't been dabbling in the direct-over-firewire
recording I was working on before, mostly because I don't have the grunt
to play back anything more than SD resolution and haven't found a good
re-encoding solution/setting for what is recorded in HD. I should dust
it off and give it some more work. But this leads me to...

* M2TS parser - Obviously goes hand-in-hand with the above, since the
output from the cable box is a raw MPeg2 TS stream. I'd be willing to
give it a look and see if I can make heads-or-tails out of the spec and
how to adapt it to the metadata parser. I wouldn't count on me for
this... but if I get some spare time I'd give it a try.

I had a few other issues with the direct-recording... but that's a
discussion for another thread.

Regardless, I love the way things are looking.

Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo 2.0

2011-07-24 Thread Phil Raymond
Will 2.0 offer an option to capture streams from devices like the Hauppauge hd
pvr, without selecting a channel to record? By that, I mean for example, using
the word stream in tv channels in the local conf and Freevo would know it's
looking for a stream instead of a channel.

On Sun Jul 17th, 2011 4:47 AM CDT Dirk Meyer wrote:

Hi everyone,

please read this if you are a Freebo user, even if you are no developer
at all. I have been thinking about the future of Freevo 2.0 and need all
your help to get it going somehow.

I tried XBMC some days ago and while it looks very nice, it forces me to
organize my media collection in a way I don't want to and has some
usability issues (IMHO). Therefore, I still need Freevo. :)

The main problem with Freevo 2.0 is my and Jason's lack of time the last
year. Development was not only slow, it wasn't existant. I now have one
Freevo-hacking day in my calender each week which may be dropped if the
weather is too good but it is there and I plan to use it. There are some
minor issues I will fix no matter what happens. But I do not have the
time to finish Freevo 2.0 to make it look and feel like I want. If you
want to help in any way, please answer to this mail and we can discuss
it. If you need help to start (like kaa.base help), feel free to ask.
Jason and I can both answer your questions. Jason: I assign your name to
some smaller stuff here, I hope it is OK. ;)

Freevo Core:

1. kaa.base is done and has all the cool stuff I want. If there is a
bug, Jason and I will take care of it. But it shouldn't be much.

2. kaa.metadata is also done. Maybe add or change a parser, but that is
not important right now. Patches are always welcome.

3. kaa.imlib2 is also working as it should and it does not play a big
role in the Freevo 2.0 core.

4. The Freevo core directory is also mostly done. There are some minor
bugs in the playlist stuff but it should be easy to fix. The menu reload
also has some problems I need to investigate.

To summarize: the core is mostly done and the remaining points are on my
TODO list and I will fix them. Now the bigger problems: GUI. The
clutter-based GUI can do nice stuff but needs some more work.

5. kaa.candy has the basics, but may need some nice effects like
mirror-effect, better animations, etc. It has everything we need to make
Freevo 2.0 work but it could be nicer. If you know C (Python not needed)
and want to play with clutter or if you now Python and want to dive into
kaa.candy, drop me a note. You only need to know kaa.base and clutter as
dependency.

6. XBMC looks s cool. The big background images, the animations.
Nice! We do have the code in Freevo 2.0 to do the same (even support to
grab TV show or movie specific wallpapers and images). I need help from
a designer to make look Freevo even better. Can someone make a fake
screenshot how Freevo should look like? Can someone provide nice
wallpapers (CC licence)? This is one of the things I can not do myself.

The GUI stuff needs help from you. C programmers, Python programmers and
artists. Or if you cannot help with that, tell us what you want to have.
Let's dive into the media plugins:

7. kaa.beacon is mostly done. I have some minor things on my list I will
do the next weeks. The big problem is a better network support. Jason:
we talked about distributed beacon servers. Do you still plan to do
this? Do you still have time for it?

8. kaa.popcorn (or video player) needs clutter support to write on a
texture. This would enable us to draw on top of the video and put it on
the background. Again: help needed here. we could either put the mplayer
output on a texture or use gstreamer. Jason played with the first option
but the code is not finished yet. Jason: do you think you can finish it?
Others: do you want to help here? You need to understand kaa.base and
kaa.popcorn (which you could change to your needs). Besides that,
mplayer and/or gstreamer. The mplayer integration would also require C
and clutter knowledge. The gstreamer integration needs pygstreamer. And
we need to figure out how to integrate it with kaa.candy and the Freevo
core. That would be my task.

9. The image viewer could look nicer. If you want to help on this
smaller part of Freevo, feel free to tell me.

10. I have no time to work on TV support. I need help on working on the
TV server, the TV devices (e.g. dvbstreamer), the EPG, etc. This is one
of the major tasks I want to assign a new maintainer.

And something different:

11. There is not webserver for Freevo 2.0. Anyone willing to take over
this part? You have complete control what you want to do. I guess you
have to know your HTML/CSS/JS-fu.

12. Android / iPhone support? Not needed but nice to have

13. Port plugins from Freevo 1.9 to 2.0

And last but not least:

14. It has been 2 or 3 years since I last asked for donations and I am
paying for the server and the domain on my own since the money run out.
It is only 11 EUR/month but it would be nice if some of you would

Good article
and only one mistake I noted - says you can't use a mouse, and we do have a
setting that allows that too.

Has someone linked to it from the wiki?

[Freevo-users] Freevo article in Ubuntu-User magazine

2010-08-22 Thread Phil Raymond
The article on using Freevo to record HDTV in Ubuntu-User magazine from last
March is now available to read online or download for free. Here's the link to
read it

http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Magazine/Archive/2010/4/RECORD-HDTV-CONTENT-WITH-FREEVO

I realize it shows a different way to use Freevo that most users aren't doing,
but that really was the point of doing this article, for me anyway. If nothing
else, it draws attention to the project and that's always a good thing.

[Freevo-users] Freevo publicity

Just some shameless, self promotion. The current issue of Ubuntu User magazine
has an article I wrote on using Freevo to record and watch HDTV. If you can't
find or buy it where you are, they do post past issues online for free
downloading, but not until 6 months later. Anyway, hope you like it.

Re: [Freevo-users] Rebuilding again my freevobox...

2009-10-11 Thread Phil Raymond
I use the Hauppauge HD PVR, which captures HD from the cable box using
component cables, then converts it to h.264 AVCHD in a .mpg container. I posted
a local_conf example in the Freevo wiki, it's just a simple stream dump, since
this is a hardware encoder. Component out from an SD box would work, albeit not
HD. It is a bit expensive, Amazon has it for $204 U.S., it lists for $249. The
beauty of this device is that it will record anything from your cable box, even
premium movie channels and on-demand content.

Subject: [Freevo-users] Rebuilding again my freevobox...

Hi,

As usual (!), I'm (trying to) rebuild(ing) my freevobox.

The trouble with my current freevobox is the temp : Outside tv TV
closet, everything is OK, but at the normal place (at least in my wife
feeling), the system receives simply not enough fresh air.
The trouble is greatly related to the PVR-150 card, witch is a good
heat generator !
So I'm trying to use an USB capture device. I don't need a TV tuner, as
the box need to record also TV show from the cable decoder, so I can
(and will probably) forget the tuner part, and better use an IR blaster
to drive the decoder.
For the IR Blaster, I think to use this one, recommended on mythtv wiki :
http://www.commandir.com/content/view/19/31/

But I'm not able to find a non expansive video encoder, supported by
Linux. I am pretty sure thet the Hauppauge PVR USB2 device would do the
trick, but this one is not exactly non expensive !

At this time, I'm still searching an SD solution, our living room TV
-and calbe decoder- is still a CRT model, but if a solution can be 'HD
ready', it could be interresting. Also, the power is here to to a
software encoding, but if I can havez a decent hardware encoding, I
could also slow down the processor.

What do you use, or know ?

Thanks,
Pascal

Subject: [Freevo-users] IVTV, can't get it to work for the life of me.

Hi,

I'm a quite happy freevo user for years. I think it's great and works
quite well. I can't wait for freevo 2 to be out.

For about 9 months I have had a PVR 150 IVTV based card in this box and
never used it. Starting mplayer on the card and useing v4l2-ctl to set
the frequencies worked like a charm though, so I know the card is in order.

I however cannot get this thing to work in freevo. I wouldn't even need
any of the fancy recording stuff, simply watching TV would be perfect
just to get started.Timeshifting after and maybe scheduled recordings
someday .., but just watching plain tv I can't even manage to work out.

First off, I am using http://home.tiscali.nl/~lteunissen/tv_grab_nl_C/
to generate an XMLtv file which looks more or less like this:
?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1?
!DOCTYPE tv SYSTEM xmltv.dtd

tv generator-info-name=tv_grab_nl_C 0.02.15
generator-info-url=http://home.tiscali.nl/~lteunissen/tv_grab_nl_C;

nieuws.
   /desc
   categoryInformatief/category
   video
  aspect16:9/aspect
   /video
/programme
/* cut some programme's */
/tv

this format I belive is the normal XML format for xmltv. However, when
going inside freevo into Watch TV - TV Guide, freevo spits out the
following error. TV Guide is Corrupt. Which I doubt, but ok.

The console gives me the following error.
Freevo 1.9.0 ready

Couldn't load the TV Guide, got an exception!

]

TV_CHANNELS = [
('1.tvgids.nl',   'Nederland 1',  'ned1')
]

TV_FREQUENCY_TABLE = {
'ned1'  :   21600,
}

Even freevo tv_grab gives that error, whereas with the -q I get a nice
list of channels for local_freevo.conf

I'm stuck and lost. The radio feature of the ivtv bit works also within
the plugin fine.

Any thoughts/pointers appreciated!

Oliver

Re: [Freevo-users] Newbie: Problem with HD channel names

2009-08-29 Thread Phil Raymond

You need to add dvbstreamer (http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvbstreamer/) to
Freevo as a plugin and then use it to scan for the channels in your area. The
command in terminal is setupdvbstreamer -A channels.conf. Next run this
commmand, dvbctrl lsservices -- -id| grep -v  ^... This will capture
the channels available. Next, copy and paste your channel list to your
local_conf.py.Here's my list as an example of what it should look like.

TV_CHANNELS = [('CBS2 CH','CBS2-HD','00cf.03e7.0001'),

   ('WPWR-DT','WPWR-DT-50.1','02b7.0459.0003')
 ]
AUDIO_DEVICE ='hw.0,0'
plugin.remove('tv.mplayer')
plugin.remove('tv.generic_record')
plugin_record = plugin.activate('tv.dvbstreamer.record')
plugin.activate('tv.dvbstreamer.live_pause')
LIVE_PAUSE_BUFFER_SIZE=(6.25, 30 * 60)

 Hello,

 I am trying to set up Freevo for the first time. I
 installed 1.9 from
 source and am now trying to set up the TV viewing.

 I am in the US and I have an HDHomeRun tuner (external box

 am failing is
 that my channel names are like 2-1, etc. Freevo
 fails with the
 message:

 Error in TV.xml file, unable to set

 I looked through the Web site, but did not see anything
 about this. How
 does one configure HD stations?

 Also, if anyone has a configuration using an HDHomeRun, how
 exactly
 does one configure the tuners in Freevo?

Your error messages indicate you built this version of Freevo with Python 2.5.
Version 1.90 needs to be built with Python 2.6. Install Python 2.6 and then

Re: [Freevo-users] Configuring HD PVR with Freevo 1.90

2009-06-21 Thread Phil Raymond

Well Evan I finally found a command that stops the HDPVR recording. I got rid
of the VCR_POST_REC command in my local conf and instead, I added a string of
commands to the VCR_CMD. Here's what the local conf now looks like

CONFIG_VERSION = 5.27
TV_RECORD_DIR = '/home/tvphil/Videos'
TV_CHANNELS = 'Comcast','Comcast','NA3'
VCR_CMD = 'cat /dev/video1 %(filename)s +  sleep %(seconds)s ; kill -9 $!'
TV_DEVICE = '/dev/video1'
TV_INPUT = 1
TV_REC_SIZE = (1920, 1080)
TV_RECORD_FILE_SUFFIX = '.mpg'
DEBUG = 5
DEBUG_CHILDAPP = 1

I think this would also be a good addition to the wiki, for anyone else who
wants to use this device for recording with Freevo.As you may have noticed the
NA3 at the end of the TV_Channels, that's to keep the recordserver to stop
telling me it has no conf for US cable channels. For anyone else reading this,
this device is the Hauppauge HD PVR, model 1212.

 Simply put, based on the error message, your VCR_POST

 working. I really think you need to reread
 http://doc.freevo.org/AnalogueTvTypes.
 The order of events I would
 recommend is first figure out what mencoder options need to
 be used to
 record from the command line. Then put these options in the
 VCR_CMD.
 Use the VCR_PRE and VCR_POST to mute and enable sound if
 needed.
 Freevo understands how to start and stop mencoder.

 I am confused... when running from the command line how do
 you normally
 stop the recording? pressing ctrl+c? killing the background

 If I understand Freevo correctly all it will do is start
 the command you
 put in VCR_CMD at the appropriate time, and when the time
 comes kill the
 process that it started. You shouldn't have to do anything
 to make it stop.

 I would recommend switching DEBUG on in your config and
 then posting the
 output here to see what is going wrong.

 you can enable debug with:

 DEBUG = 5
 DEBUG_CHILDAPP = 1

 in your local_conf.py

Re: [Freevo-users] Configuring HD PVR with Freevo 1.90

2009-06-06 Thread Phil Raymond

I added VCR_CMD = /dev/video1 and only got errors. This is in fact where dmesg
show the HDPVR coming through, /dev/video0 is the built in webcam.I still
believe this problem is tied to the Freevo recordserver needing a channel conf.
in order to start. The channel conf is telling Freevo to record from a channel
that doesn't exist with this device. If I remove the channel conf or try to
trick it with a false entry, it simply won't start. So, I'm stuck with a Catch
22 situation. VCR_CMD doesn't seem to work as a workaround for this problem.
I've tried over a dozen different hacks to the local_conf.py and no luck so
far. If you can think of any other commands or a way to get Freevo to record
without a channel conf, I'd love to know.For now, I'll just stick with using
the cat /dev/video1(filename) command to record. It's the only one that works
every time.

Re: [Freevo-users] Configuring HD PVR with Freevo 1.90

2009-06-06 Thread Phil Raymond

Thanks Stephan, that's what I needed. Now I need help with stopping a
recording. I read the wiki and used the command VCR_POST_REC = ('cat
/dev/video1 -c')to stop recordings. When Freevo reaches a stop time, the
lighted tv screen in the corner of the Freevo window goes out, but the HDPVR is
still lit blue and is in fact, still recording. The only way I can stop
recording is to pull the usb plug from my computer. Is there an alternate
command I can use that might work to stop a recording? At least it now starts
recording, so again, thank you.Here's my local conf as it is now

CONFIG_VERSION = 5.27
TV_RECORD_DIR = '/home/tvphil/Videos'
TV_CHANNELS = ('Comcast','Comcast','NA3')
VCR_CMD = 'cat /dev/video1 %(filename)s'
VCR_POST_REC = ('cat /dev/video1 -c')
TV_DEVICE = '/dev/video1'
TV_INPUT = 1
TV_REC_SIZE = (1920, 1080)
TV_RECORD_FILE_SUFFIX = '.mpg'
CHILDAPP_DEBUG = 1

 I'm sure you've tried this, but just to be certain...

 From reading the wiki, and guessing from your emails I
 think your VCR_CMD
 should be:

 VCR_CMD = 'cat /dev/video1  %(filename)s'

 Is that what you tried when you say you set the VCR_CMD to
 /dev/video1? If
 not give that a try and see if it works. If I understand
 things correctly
 Freevo simply executes the contents of VCR_CMD when it is
 time to record.
 In this case there is nothing to do except start outputting
 video1 to
 file, so in this case Freevo will fill in the file name for
 you and do the
 correct recording ( I think ).

 My freevo simply uses mplayer -dumpstream to dump the
 digital TV stream
 straight to disk and works quite happily, so the above
 command ought to
 work for you too.

  I added VCR_CMD = /dev/video1 and only got errors.

 Post the VCr commands you are using. If you can record from

 Thanks, I installed Zope and Freevo 1.8.3 is now installed.
 However, I'm now having a problem with my local conf.
 It's telling me I'm using version 5.19. Like I have

 the conf version, in this case 5.26. Is there something else
 I need to do or change so it recognizes my local conf file?

Problem is, there is no separate download for this at twistedmatrix.com.
Furthermore, it's already inside of twisted 8.2.0, which as you can see, is
installed. Why is Freevo not detecting twisted.web.microdom inside of twisted?
Any answers and/or solutions if anybody knows, please help.

Re: [Freevo-users] Anyone got a TViX (custom hardware media centre)?

2008-07-11 Thread Phil Raymond
This actually plays both mkv h.264 and avchd h.264, which is usually contained
in a mpeg.ts wrapper. If I had this, I think I would use it as a means of
decoding HD content recorded by the new Hauppauge hd pvr (which encodes avchd
h.264) connected to another box running Freevo. Then you could either use it as
a network media player or with a hard drive inside, store what is recorded on
the other box.Its only downside is its price.With a 750 GB hard drive, the
TVIX runs about $560 U.S.Add another $250 for the Hauppauge unit and you're
over $800.A TVIX with no hard drive would bring the total down to about $650.

 a great bit of kit for a freevo box.

I wonder what got lost in translation by marketing for them to come up
with H.264(MKV). Unless it really is the case that it only plays h264
content in a matroska container, which would be, well, retarded.

[Freevo-users] New Hauppauge HD PVR

2008-04-15 Thread Phil Raymond
Just wanted to get some feedback from the Freevo Community on this new device
for recording HD content. It does not have a tuner, it is only a capture device
that streams what it encodes to your computer via usb. It can only work with a
cable or a satellite box, feeding it via component cables. I have read that
there will be Linux drivers for this shortly after it goes on sale, but from
where, I have no idea. Does anyone have any info. on where the drivers might be
coming from? Here's a link to this product's page on the Hauppauge site

Re: [Freevo-users] Ubuntu Gutsy problems

2008-03-27 Thread Phil Raymond
For the sake of establishing a clear pattern, I had to install Freevo from
source for the past 2 years I have used Ubuntu. I don't know why Geole can't
package Freevo correctly for Ubuntu, but that's just the way it is.Source
installs also keep Freevo running after any ubuntu update, like the one coming
up in a few weeks. I have 2 Freevo installs on 2 computers both running Ubuntu
Gutsy. One is standard definition (NTSC) using a Hauppauge 350 and the other
does ATSC HD using the HVR 950 usb dongle.

I don't think so, even though it is necessary to run the correct config script.
The problem I
noticed in earlier versions of the Ubuntu-Deb package, was with wrong
dependencies for
Freevo, such as configuring to Twisted Web version 2.5, when the older version
2.4 was all
Freevo could work with. I think the same type of dependency problems still
exists with the recent version
from what you described.

   Jonathan,

Here's my local_conf file. As you can see, I finally made a channels conf for
dvbstreamer. Unfortunately, even though Freevo starts up with out any stated
errors, I still can't record or watch TV.
I thought if you looked at my local_conf, maybe you or some other Freevo user

   Jonathan,

Here's my local_conf file. As you can see, I finally made a channels
 conf for dvbstreamer. Unfortunately, even though Freevo starts up with
 out any stated errors, I still can't record or watch TV.
I thought if you looked at my local_conf, maybe you or some other
 Freevo user could tell me what, if anything, is configured wrong.And yes, I
 run dvbstreamer and Freevo as root.

Re: [Freevo-users] DVB Channel Detection

2008-01-15 Thread Phil Raymond
No, I don't use xmltv and I can't manual record on this new Freevo box. I
choose to do manual recording all the time, like I have for the last 3 years
with my
other Freevo box that records only analog, using a hauppauge 350 with ivtv
drivers. I've never had any luck configuring xmltv, so I just don't bother.

 My guess is that when you try to get to the guide it say it corrupt?
are you using a xmltv list?
If so what does the top 15 -20 lines look like? can you manually
record with freevo?

Re: [Freevo-users] DVB Channel Detection

2008-01-15 Thread Phil Raymond
/root/documents/freevo/live.buf has been created, that's why I moved it from
the tmp folder. Freevo for whatever reason, isn't finding it. This one problem
is turning out to be the biggest hang up. I even tried renaming it to drop the
.buf at the end, same result.

Re: [Freevo-users] DVB Channel Detection

2008-01-14 Thread Phil Raymond
I did after the last email I sent, after searching more info and that did get
rid of the error message. My only question now is, where is the channel list it
generated? It didn't show up in the terminal like it did when I ran dtvscan.If
I can find that and copy the id string to my local conf, I think Freevo might
record. I'm still seeing the error when I start Freevo about the lack of
/tmp/freevo/live.buf file. I did create it, but because it's in the tmp folder,
it keeps getting purged after every shutdown. How can I get it to stay there?

I did dvbctrl lsservices -- -id as root and it executes the command, but
nothing is displayed in the terminal. Does it create the file somewhere else?
If I should see it in the terminal, then it sounds like I have another unknown

First i would set
LIVE_PAUSE_BUFFER_PATH = '/path/to/buf'
to something else. dvbstreamer store it in a database.
use ' dvbctrl lsservices -- -id ` to list what it found. the first

This sounds like it might work, but you left out one very important piece of
information. Where does the channels.conf file go? I took a guess at the
.dvbstreamer hidden folder and also dvbstreamer's main folder, neither worked.

did the channels.conf file you fed into setupdvbstreamer resemble
CHANNEL 02:57028615:8VSB:49:52:3
CHANNEL 03:63028615:8VSB:49:52:3
CHANNEL 04:69028615:8VSB:49:52:3
CHANNEL 05:79028615:8VSB:49:52:3
CHANNEL 06:85028615:8VSB:49:52:3
CHANNEL 07:177028615:8VSB:49:52:3
if not try the attached channels.conf to feed in with
setupdvbstreamer -A channels.conf

this will cause dvbstreamer to look at all atsc channels. then run
dvbctrl lsservices -- -id| grep -v  ^..

the grep filters out the channels with nothing on them

Don't know how this is with dvb-(t,c,s) but with dvbstreamer a
channls.conf file with all the channels
(2-69) for atsc could be feed into dvbstreamer and it would detect all
the channels.  then a
'dvbctrl scan all` would rescan all the channels, so a script a night
could rerun the scan. next
'dvbctrl lsservices -- -id| grep -v  ^.. ` would filter out
the ones that aren't there. so for example

..0003 : CHAN63
..0003 : CHAN64
..0003 : CHAN65
..0003 : CHAN66
..0003 : CHAN67
..0003 : CHAN68
..0003 : CHAN69
00bd.0435.0004 : 12-2 WILLSD1
00bd.0435.0005 : 12-3 WILLSD2
01f1.03fb.0004 : 17-2 WAND-SD
0209.0004.0004 : 0004
02a5.03e1.0004 : 3-2 WCFN-DT

TV_CHANNELS = [ (''00bd.0435.0004,12-2 WILLSD1, ''00bd.0435.0004),
   (...),
   ]

could be created. with python i guess we could import it via a
separate file, though it would require
restarting freevo every day.

Thanks, that worked.One more question. The other problem I have is with Freevo
finding or creating (not sure which) the live buffer file in the tmp folder.
I've tried creating it and seeing if it would create one when it begins
recording, neither works. Now that I have a channels.conf, will it create
this file? Or do I need to do something else?

   Don't know how this is with dvb-(t,c,s) but with dvbstreamer a
   channls.conf file with all the channels
   (2-69) for atsc could be feed into dvbstreamer and it would
 detect all
   the channels.  then a
   'dvbctrl scan all` would rescan all the channels, so a script a
 night
   could rerun the scan. next
   'dvbctrl lsservices -- -id| grep -v  ^.. ` would filter
 out
   the ones that aren't there. so for example

   ..0003 : CHAN63
   ..0003 : CHAN64
   ..0003 : CHAN65
   ..0003 : CHAN66
   ..0003 : CHAN67
   ..0003 : CHAN68
   ..0003 : CHAN69
   00bd.0435.0004 : 12-2 WILLSD1
   00bd.0435.0005 : 12-3 WILLSD2
   01f1.03fb.0004 : 17-2 WAND-SD
   0209.0004.0004 : 0004
   02a5.03e1.0004 : 3-2 WCFN-DT

   TV_CHANNELS = [ (''00bd.0435.0004,12-2 WILLSD1,
 ''00bd.0435.0004),
  (...),
  ]

   could be created. with python i guess we could import it via a
   separate file, though it would require
   restarting freevo every day.

[Freevo-users] atsc scan of u.s. ota channels for hvr 950

2008-01-12 Thread Phil Raymond
I've gotten as far as getting Freevo 1.75 to talk to both analog and dvb sides
of my hauppauge hvr 950 usb dongle. My problem is finding and using dvb-utils.
I'm running Freevo on Ubuntu Gutsy, I've also tried using dvbtune, but haven't
had any luck with it either. If anyone has had luck scanning for atsc u.s.
over-the-air channels, please tell me how. I also have configured the
dvbstreamer plugin for Freevo correctly. I recall reading somewhere on the
Freevo site that this plugin could be used for scanning as well, but I couldn't
find any information on how to do this.If this is possible, I'm guessing this
would be the best way to scan.Finally, if anyone could post a copy their
local_conf.py for atsc tv channels, that would be a big help too.

Thanks, I thought I had all the devel. packages, but the imlib11 from Ubuntu

Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo and HVR-950?

2007-10-09 Thread Phil Raymond
Here's a link to an online article about this subject,
albeit from a Myth user. The instructions at the end
for installing the drivers for Ubuntu Feisty and Edgy
and Fedora Core could probably be edited a bit to
suit any other distro. As for configuring for Freevo,
you'll need the tv.generic.record plug-in, as this
Hauppauge uses an experimental V4l dvb driver for an
Empia chipset, not ivtv. For channel selection, I
think Freevo can get the DTV (ATSC) channels, but I'm
not sure if it can tune to the
DTV-non-hd-sub-channels, like 53.2, 53.3, etc. Here's
the link to that page

Well no, because they're both python, so to install
from source after downloading and extracting the
tarball.You would then cd either twisted or twisted
web to your home folder in a terminal then in the same
terminal type the words python setup.py install, then
hit enter. This is the installation command for any
python app.Configure, make, make install doesn't
work.After doing this, I installed Freevo from source
using the same method, rather than using a deb
package.If you do it this way, then if you upgrade
next month to ubuntu gutsy, nothing should change in
Freevo, because you installed from source.

Speaking from the top of my head without the facts in

Re: [Freevo-users] recordserver and ubuntu feisty [solved]

2007-04-24 Thread Phil Raymond
Dear Duncan

I tried Tom's method to get the recordserver going in
Ubuntu Feisty (I had the same problem) and I did
succeed in getting the recordserver to come up. But I
also get a strange error message in terminal after I
start the recordserver, it says
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/twisted/web/http.py:40:
RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for
module _c_urlarg: This Python has API version 1013,
module _c_urlarg has version 1012.
  from twisted.protocols._c_urlarg import unquote
After this, I start Freevo and it starts, but with
this error message
freevo: could not connect to socket
freevo: No such file or directory
I can program a recording,but nothing will record. I
have the same ivtv drivers and configuration in
local_conf.py that I used successfully before in
version 1.6.2, so it can't be that. Any ides on what's
wrong and how to fix it? I already reinstalled Freevo
since this and the same thing happens.

  hello,

  1) From a fresh install of feisty, the package
 freevo1.7 seems broken.
  it needs python2.4. (solved)

  2) the recordserver crash with this output :

  python-twisted was intalled with freevo as
 dependencie. The version is 2.5

  I try change the symlink /usr/bin/python --
 /usr/bin/python2.4 but i've
  got the same output :

  Any idea ?

  Yes, you need to use Twisted-2.4, I suspect that
 Twisted-2.5 is being
  installed.

  Hello,

  I solved my problem with feisty and freevo.
  The solution is not the best but ...

  here is :

  install freevo1.7 with apt and all the dependances
 python-twisted , etc ...

  then upload this file :

  wget

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/tomlohave/linux/python-twisted-2.4.tar.gz
  (it is python twisted and all taken from a pc
 under edgy)
  unpack this archive in your home (or whatever you
 want)

  go to /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages :

  cd /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages
  sudo mv twisted twisted-origin
  sudo ln -s /home/yourlogin/python/twisted twisted

  with this small change, all is perfect and the
 recordserver is
  functionnal.
  But it's not an elegant solution. Can the
 maintainer look at the package ?

  i hope this can help someone :)

 I think that you can also:
 sudo mv twisted twisted-2.5
 cd /path/to/unpacked/twisted-2.4.0/package
 cd ZopeInterface-3.1.0c1
 sudo python setup.py install
 cd ../TwistedCore-2.4.0
 sudo python setup.py install
 cd ..
 sudo python setup.py install

 This is that standard way to install python
 packages.

 But if your happy then stick with your solution.
 Duncan
