Wow...I just started reading the broadband thread, seeing that there has
been so many letters.

I have to agree with Michael.

They only support the Windows operating system, so don't expect customer
support for it. They have not promised you anything other than it will work
on a windows machine. Now if you take your linksys and hook it up to a
peecee...and experience the same problem...then they will be more than happy
to help you out.

I have bought and used linksys routers in the past. I have had no problem
with them, but if I did, I wouldn¹t say they suck because they couldn¹t
support something they never claimed they would in the first place.

Most likely the Power Management Unit. I had to replace it twice when I had
my Wallstreet. The best thing to do is to try the battery in another
Wallstreet. If not, you could try to get another battery (2 batteries are
always good to have) and see if you have the same problem. If you do, then
you know that something is wrong inside your Wallstreet, most likely the
PMU. If not, then the first battery is dead.

Re: Expansion Bay products

2002-05-10 Thread Jim Freeman

When I got my firewire PB I had to get a 250 zip module to go with it. I
don't know why the idea attracted me. But nearly two years later I see
that an external zip or no zip at all would have been better. I rarely
use it. I guess I felt I needed a replacement for a floppy drive. But I
don't have access to other computers with zip drives. I exchange files
by e-mail or over a network. I have airport at home and my wife and I
pass files wirelessly. And I burn CDs for backup or transferring large
files. And I agree with Thomas that the module concept isn't all that
useful.

I deliberated over the internal/external peripheral thing, and in the end I
decided that having modular peripherals was more important to me than the
convenience of an internal device; especially since it's not so convenient
when your "internal" device is outside of the machine a substantial part of

I had the exact same issue in the exact same model. I picked it up used
and the battery wouldn't charge but the AC would work. Swapping the
battery with one from my 233 WSII proved that the battery was good and
would charge. Also a charged battery would operate the WS 250, charging
though would only work for about a minute. Rather than going through the
process of chaging the sound/power board I found that using an old PB duo
power supply caused the battery to charge while the laptop was
off/asleep. When the powerbook is on it can either work off the charged
battery or the AC power.
I've since given the 'book to my sister and she's been using it like that
for a few months and hasn't complained yet.

Bottom line is that I don't think your battery is dead. I live in CT, if
you happen to come down this far you're welcome to swing by and we can
test using similar configs.

Wallstreet - Bad Battery?

2002-05-10 Thread malibu83

Battery Reset 2.0 didn't (really) work.

I have a Wallstreet (250MHz, 13.3" if it matters). I let it sit on the shelf in
sleep for way too long (days). When I got back to it, it was totally dead. I
knew about Battery Reset so I tried it.

Battery Reset finds the battery and does something. The red X over the battery
disappears for a few minutes, the little lightning bolt never appears, and
eventually the red X comes back. Other than that, it works fine on AC.

I would like to buy a new battery, but I want to be sure it is really the
problem -- I've heard that the charging board goes bad sometimes, too. Is there
any way to test it?

Is there anyone in the Boston or Manchester, NH area who wants to spend 15
minutes letting me come over and try their battery in my 'book or vice versa?

Any other ideas?

Keep in mind that 250MB Zip disks can't be read by
drives designed for 100MB media (like my beige G3) so
if you intend to shuttle data from PB/G3 you won't be

Flame wars revisited...

2002-05-10 Thread James Rohde

Have some of you read the studies on the effects of (self-induced, as in
flame wars that wax vitriolic) stress on the human body? It's not a
positive thing for blood pressure, stomachs, and a few other things.

On 5/10/02 10:06 AM Michael Bryan Bell edified us all by writing:
>You cannot decide that a company should support whatever you like, and then
>say they don't stand behind their product. If you don't get this, I don't

Sure they can! Are we trying to expect people to be rational? The
evidence shows that we do not always act on the basis of reason. But we
can choose to disagree - I do that with my Wintel friends regularly and
often (including the one who asked me what PC to get and then ignored my
recommendations and got a Wintel). We are able (for good/evil/otherwise
reasons, with pleasant/unpleasant consequences) to make any choice we are
physically/financially able to accomplish. So my telling my Wintel-using
friend I think she made less-than-her-best choice (in those or even more
drastic terms) won't necessarily change her mind; depending on how I
phrase it, I could start a feud with her.

I'd rather spend my time stating that "my thoughts/opinion on ... are..."
and I don't need to convince one other person that they _must_ agree with
me.

Flame wars (IMHO) don't usually contribute much useful information ("all
smoke, no fire"?) for those on this list. Now someone saying they had a
bad experience with Linksys tech support or that "If you buy this and
they don't say they'll support it, you're on your own", both give me
information which I can use in deciding what kind of stuff I may/may not
buy.

My double pennies on what has dragged on for (again, IMHO) longer than
necessary. I would hope we can move on, friends. (Or maybe it's the
impending summer, or the phase of the moon, or...) ;-)

Jim Rohde

to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable
for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Well, you have a couple of things at work here. First, file sharing works
over AppleTalk. It's been known for some time now that when you have
AppleTalk on when you wake up the computer, it takes several seconds to
restore the connection. All this time, it seems like the computer is frozen.
I don't experience this delay in OS X, though. Next, file sharing has to
make some verifications on the volumes you're sharing. That too takes some
time and there isn't much you can do about it, except to set your laptop to
not go to sleep (in 'Energy Saver' control panel).

Re: Broadband - not wireless

2002-05-10 Thread csean

Bad form responding to my own post, perhaps, but I've found out a few more
things on our DSL setup.

As I mentioned, it's a "combo" DSL/telephone service, with 24/7 1.28Mbit
DSL, plus all local and national telephone calls, for a fixed monthly rate
of $29 (half price for the first six months, then it goes up to the full
rate of $58). We were also able to cancel our contract with the phone
monopoly, too.

The DSL hardware is an Alcatel Speed Touch Home ethernet modem and a Telsey
Telecommunications CPV Home Gateway "device".

The CPV has 4 10bT ethernet ports (1 In, 3 Out) and 2 phone jacks. One of
the Out ethernet ports will be used for a fiber optic line in the future,
though now I can hook up a third computer to it.

The CPV also acts as an ethernet hub. I wasn't sure about this, so in the
end I just hooked up a second Mac to it (currently there's a Sawtooth and a
Lombard, both with OS 9.1) and both Macs were sharing files in an instant.
Wow. Now I'll be running those friendly little CAT wires through the house
this weekend (while trying to keep our 15-month old from immediately ripping
out dad's best laid plans).

No additional software needed to use the DSL modem or the CPV with our Macs.
A truly transparent setup and system. It is literally a "hot pluggable" DSL
connection. And each Mac has its own separate DSL connection; there's no
need to use one as a router.

The point here being that while the service provider did mention
Mac-compatibility, their service people did not know much at all about Macs.
Indeed, being a new company, they seemed to be more sales types than tech
types. Time to spread the word with them.

Next query: security. Given that it's all so simple and transparent - a
rather large WAN of subscribers, in short - what would you suggest in terms
of security? As I said, we're using OS 9.1, with no plans to go to X too
soon.

the classic system folders to verify what they really were.

Let's see if I can summarize this thread so we can all move on

LinkSys sucks because they don't support Macs.
Some people don't care.
Other people do.

Move along, these aren't the droids you're looking for.

Very good advice...

I have always run it at least twice or more. If it runs clean the first
time, I only run it once more, just to be sure. I did this because one time
a couple years ago someone mentioned the same thing, and sure enough, after
repairing a problem, another problem would arise, or just be noticed.

My rule of thumb: Always wait for two consecutive "no problems found."

This is going to be a controversial subject I am sure.

I for one am grateful for this filtering service. I enjoy having no
commercial spam from my Mac.com email. I still get those annoying "pass on
to your friends" spam from friends, but I have my own filters set up to
automatically delete and reply to them to quit sending me BS email like
that. I also have been victim to this. Every now and then I get one of those
messages from this subscription server that says my email was bounced.

Even with the most high level of spam filtering in my hotmail account, I
still get as many as 20 spam emails a day there. I deplore spam so much,
that I am satisfied to have a couple bounced messages to me.

I also have some level of protection against this bounced email: everyone
that means anything to me, or anyone I desperately want something from,
knows to send my email to two of my accounts (one Mac.com and another my
Army account) just to make sure I get it, and I have always received it from
both accounts.

My opinion? Let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

To quote Linksys tech support: "woop de freakin do, 0.0001% of 0.03% of
the computing marketshare doesn't like me or comprehend my view point. More
power to you.

> You bought a Linksys, fine it works for you, it's not superior

Actually, I didn't. I bought an ABS (white), which has gone dead twice. A
buddy does have a linksys though, and it works great so far.

> Using it to defend poor customer support was a bit weak.

Along with economics, I wish reading comprehension was focused on more. I
was in no way excusing the tech's behavior, although I would guess that the
person most upset in this situation is probably a little more "sensitive" to
certain things than most.

My point (going to be very clear here) is that the person said linksys
wasn't standing behind their product, when they do NOT say they support it.
If I buy office, and call microsoft with a linux question, and then get
pissy even though I think linux SHOULD be supported...

You cannot decide that a company should support whatever you like, and then
say they don't stand behind their product. If you don't get this, I don't
know how to explain it any clearer. It really doesn't seem that difficult.

> Getting poor
> service is a little different than getting none when something has a

See above. If I buy an iPod and call apple saying I want to get it to work
with winXP, they will laugh their asses off and say they can't help you. No
one is being turned away from service on supported platforms that I can tell
whatsoever, just that one apparently easily excitable person keeps getting
tech support pissed at them by insisting they support his platform.

Your ipod MAY work on a pc just fine if you get some specific software for
it, but apple sure as hell doesn't have to support it and you can't say they
weren't standing behind their product, could you?

> Also what's with this
> flip-flopping on standards?

I've flipped no standards, and you've provided no evidence of such.

> For the gold standard of your economic
> philosophy, Linksys should be held to none?

...

Ok. I am mentally trying to force this into your ear through pure will.
Obviously, reason and certain mindsets do not mix, so this is the last time:

If you buy any product from any manufacturer, and use it in ways they did
not intend or test for or support (however stupid you think that is) you are
on your own, and then demonizing that company for not supporting it is
wrong.

> Fine, Linksys has decided
> they want to stay in business by screwing their customers and blatently
> deny them service outright.

You start giving me cases where they are doing that to customers who have
bought their product and calling in with it on the platforms they support it
for and you will have a point.

Never heard that. At all. And none has been shown here, except for one
person calling in and being told that "no, we don't support mac" and another
one who is very excitable and I can imagine has similar experiences when the
wait is too long at starbucks. One or two isolated cases you can pull from
anywhere, but systematic, such as you get with certain companies (ala
quark), no.

> So

*sigh*

Really, this was not a flame war. Then again, some people don't get that the
simpsons are satire either. This was pointing out how ridiculous certain
parts of the mac cult of personality can get, especially when it starts
making people feel like they will be lashed out at if they say they LIKE a
product.

I could care less what anyone buys. I could care less about you- but if you
decide to buy a linksys and someone goes after you for it, I'll still think
they're indulging in their latent fascist sensibilities a little too much.

2002-05-10 Thread Peter Kim

Ugh! I'm not a moderator, but Mike, your holier-than-thou tirade
based on economic philosophy has just earned you time in my penalty
box. You bought a Linksys, fine it works for you, it's not superior
because of economic theory, no matter how much you apply your bias for it.
Using it to defend poor customer support was a bit weak. Getting poor
service is a little different than getting none when something has a
warranty/service offer that was paid for. Also what's with this
flip-flopping on standards? For the gold standard of your economic
philosophy, Linksys should be held to none? Fine, Linksys has decided
they want to stay in business by screwing their customers and blatently
deny them service outright. Then we can say they suck and say what kind
of service we expect and who provides it. Ironically, this fits nicely
into your theory, but for some reason you have decided to ignore it. So
think a little more before you decide to light a petty flame war and waste
the rest of our time.

Peter
