Remote Control

2002-07-23 Thread vlad

I don't remember this being a subject...

Is there a way of remotely controlling i-Tunes thru Pismo's IR port? I'd
consider buying an airport card (if it can be used for the purpose??? )
if I could jump thru songs from my bed...(I have a short RCA cable:-)

P.S I don't like creating playlistsmy mood changes too often for a
playlist to stay curent;-)

TIA

Re: iBook vs. PowerBook

2002-07-23 Thread Thomas Ethen

The State Schools here in Wisconsin just started a new policy this year
(daughter starting as a Freshman) that all students are required to get a PC
Laptop through the school and will have to purchase that PC even though they
have a computer of their own.

Tom

So I would recommend buying the cheapest powerbook you can afford that meets
the standards for school. Then buy a second low-end PB in your senior year.
You will recoup at least 30% of the value (hopefully more) of your first PB
 to buy the second PB.

Likely windows with the right local time but the wrong time zone (set to PDT).

Laurent,

I will have to check that out when I get back on my Pismo again! Wisconsin
being the socialist state that it is, may have just moved to their own time

Anyway, the PC requirement in College is something we all should think

For the sheer power, and the best long term investment, the G4/667 is the
best. The iBook is due for a G4 upgrade now that's the only product line
using the G3. So, that's somekind of dead end and if you're planning to use
it for many years, you might not be able to run the latest Mac OS on it
sooner than you might think. Mac OS X has portions of it that were optimized
for the G4, so you're getting a much better performance with the Titanium
PowerBook.

All IMHO, of course...

I assume the contact between the cpu and the heat spreader has been a little

get a silicon glue (many computer stores carry them, especially those
that sell CPUs individually) and pick it up. It is a silicon bonding
glue. It makes a thermal bond between the CPU and Heat Sink. I never
leave the office without it.

OT: LaunchCFMApp?

2002-07-23 Thread J Cole

Hi all. Just a random question for the more-OS X-savvy-than-me crowd. hehe.

What exactly is LaunchCFMApp? It's at the very top of my process list at
almost all times, is owned by me, and consistently is using about 15-20%
of my processor. It also appears to spawn multiple copies of itself that
consume less.

What is this app? Is it part of the OS, or something attached to an app I
installed?

To tie this thread to G-Books, I'm just trying to find and eliminate the
processor hogs on my TiBook 550, since the fan keeps coming on while I'm
doing nothing but typing in a note database.

TIA

JC

This is used when launching Classic apps that use the Code Fragment Manager,
to load portions of the code dynamically at runtime. I don't think you want
to kill that one. Better off shutting Classic down. See if that helps. It
might also be used to load CFM-based Carbon applications, but I'm not sure
about that one.

Hi all. Just a random question for the more-OS X-savvy-than-me crowd. hehe.

What exactly is LaunchCFMApp? It's at the very top of my process list at

To tie this thread to G-Books, I'm just trying to find and eliminate the
processor hogs on my TiBook 550, since the fan keeps coming on while I'm
doing nothing but typing in a note database.

First question is answered from a newsgroup posting:
What is LaunchCFMapp?

LaunchCFMApp is a process that the operating system uses to launch (start) a
Code Fragment Manager app.

CFM apps are Carbon apps that are designed to run under both MacOS Classic
(with CarbonLib) and MacOS X. Some examples include iTunes and iMovie 1.0.

When you double-click on such an app, the computer runs LaunchCFMApp and then
LaunchCFMApp loads and executes the program.

The name shows up to ProcessViewer as LaunchCFMApp because ProcessViewer is a
seriously brain-damaged program. Its programmers, no doubt fresh in the Apple
lab from a wild night of drinking Jolt Cola down at the local strip club, never
bothered to peek inside the LaunchCFMApp structure to see what the REAL name of
the executing program is. Top (from a terminal window) will, however.

Second question:

Since the TiBook acts as one very large heat sink, it can handle VERY
HIGH temperatures. The Pismo and earlier books rarely every went on
fan, but the TiBook, mine especially, will do it even when it is 60
degrees in my office. It's normal and a design specialty (not flaw)
of the computer.

That's straight from the Genius Bar at the Mall Of America Apple
Store last week.

USB sharing

2002-07-23 Thread Bruce Johnson

Gotta wild idea here...

I have two machines (TiBook running OSX, GW G4 running 9.1) and one
Epson USB printer.

Is there a way to share the printer between the two?

If I connect all of them to a usb hub will that let the printer be seen
by both computers?

Any other way of doing this?

cheapest WIFI card for G3Firewire Powerbook?

What is the cheapest airport type card I can buy for a G3 Firewire Powerbook
(Pismo) that I can just stick into the side of the Pismo and start
downloading megabytes of files at megabyte speeds from the free air net at
city hall?

Where would I get this card, especially since it may be a used one at such a
great price?

Will the needed software come with the card?

Re: Can you print wirelessly (or wired) with Asante Friendlynet router?

configure my TiBook to print to my LaserSelect 360. The Laserwriter is
connected to the rest of my home network via an Asante switching hub and

network. I was hoping the OS X print center would allow me to find it
and set it up. Apple support has told me I can't print to my printer
(wirelessly or wired) ... which I find hard to swallow.

Bull feathers. Then why do they include a driver for it in OS X?

 When I mentioned
I had Asante products in the mix, he indicated since there were
non-Apple products in the mix, Apple doesn't get into system setup or
troubleshooting (said to get a consultant).

I would be satisfied to print via ethernet; I would be thrilled to
print to it via the wireless setup. Anybody have insight/possible
 solutions to this?

Bry-

The print server on your router should work as long as 1) the printer is
PS2 and 2) you have the driver installed. A driver comes with OS X. You
can try using a parallel port cable from the LW Select 360 (nice old
workhorse) to the router. According to Asante's info, this should work
just fine.

You might find the tech support folks at Asante more helpful and better
informed.

Please let us know how it works out.

And you can get in considerable trouble with the network admins in their

Re: USB sharing

2002-07-23 Thread Jeff Lentz

There are two options for USB sharing of an Epson
printer. There's the poor utility that Epson has, and
there's Apple's USB Printer Sharing. Apple's was the
lesser of two evils for me, but it worked so poorly
that I ended up springing for an Epson C80N so I could
hang it on the network as a standalone.

Apple's USB printer sharing worked on my Appletalk
network using DHCP server for IP address assignments,
but it would often lose the remote address of the
printer and I'd have to go back to the host computer,
regenerate the shortcut, then copy it to the remote
machine in order to get it to work. Very frustrating.
I think if you never turn off either machine, it will
minimize your problems.

I think $200 is a reasonable solution... you can get them for a total

And you can get in considerable trouble with the network admins in their

Network managers dealing with hospital record and patient data security

Ah hah!

Thanks for the info, guys (Ryan, Laurent). I'll use TOP instead of the
process viewer from now on find out which apps are doing the processor
hogging.

I guess I shouldn't feel too bad about the fan running - I don't have AC in
my house, and summer is keeping things at a toasty 80º or so in my computer
room. I've got the Ti up on a PodiumPad, so it doesn't get TOO warm. The fan
noise (as has been well argued here and on other forums) gets irritating.

Again thanks very much for the info!!

(new list member here, hello to all.)

so is the day coming (far too soon for my liking) when the newest operating

old reliable 400MHz Pismo PowerBook?

this is something I've been mulling over recently, particularly last week,
as I spotted several Macworld attendees sauntering up my block in their
Jaguar t-shirts...

I'm running OS X, and want to pick up 10.2 when it lands next month. this
isn't a question of money - it's strictly a matter of how efficiently this
PowerBook will continue to operate as newer and newer OS's become
available...

I have two G3s, a 500mhz Pismo and a 466mhz Clamshell. Does anyone think
that there'll be an economic incentive for this?
I might be sorry, but i intend to install Jaguar on both of these G3s
and will hope for the best. I'd sort of like to stick it out and wait
for the next generation of chip when I upgrade. Maybe in two years when
my warranties are gone there will be a new IBM chip or a G4 or something
developed as a consortial effort by both Motorola and IBM.

Actually I've perceived the next OSX upgrade as a becoming more of a
hardbody than a bloated upgraded. I look forward to it for my 500MHz iBook
which has only a quarter of the backside cache your machine sports. Even
with the recent addition of 512MB RAM for it (I swapped out a 128MB) it
still doesn't feel as fast as when it ran OS9.2.2.

While Apple has added more features to each upgrade of OSX, they have also
continued fine tuning and streamlining it. OSX.1 compared to the first
release of OSX is significantly faster and more reliable.

I'm sure it has been no easy task to take a UNIX operating system and give
it the look and feel of a Macintosh, which is why there were a number of
basic, familiar functions missing in it's initial release (windowshades,
spring loaded folder etc.). While some of these basics don't seem that
significant, I'm been surprised at the number of times I've
double-click-held a folder in an attempt to drill down, only to remember
that the function is missing.

Oddly, my biggest pet peeve is that command-N now invokes a new window in
the Finder rather than make a new folder. Why? WHY!? Oh well, I'll live.

So the G4 upgrades for 400mhz Pismos doesn't involve soldering? They
open them and lift out the daughtercards? And then attach a new CPU to
the motherboard?
I know some people like to hack their Clamshells...that would explain
why they stop at the processor.

Yah the processer pops right out of the PowerBook 2000

it i think if i remember right to install the lower
ram chip. I remember readin that the 2000 powerbook
was suppose to be a G4 under orginal design but due to
heat problems they intalled a G3 instead. Thus
actually the Powerbook motherboard was a powerbook G4
motherboard with a G3 processor on it. (this was in
macworld or some other mac publication back in 2000 -
have the artlcle somewere filed away in my two
industrial size file cabinets in my little apartment.
To be honest OS X 10.1 works better then the orginal
OS 9.0.4 when i bought it new in Nov 2000. I almost
entirly use OS X 10.1 on it now since i use my G4 Dual

I'm running OS X, and want to pick up 10.2 when it lands next month. this
isn't a question of money - it's strictly a matter of how efficiently this
PowerBook will continue to operate as newer and newer OS's become
 available...

All the comments I have read on the Internet were unanimous in saying that
10.2 was significantly faster than 10.1. People with beta versions were
reporting that the latest builds were perceptibly faster than the previous
ones, which were faster than 10.1, this is even if you rule out Quartz
Extreme, which disqualifies a lot of Macintosh that simply don't have the
right video card or an AGP slot. Some specifications on the Apple's web site
were calling for an optimal 32 MB video card with AGP, although that was
optimum performance. I'm wondering, since the Pismo has an AGP slot, if we
could expect some hardware-based acceleration, even though the video card in
the Pismo has only 8 MB. I guess we'll see, but I'm not holding my breath. I
remember using a Wallstreet before the Pismo and how abysmal were the video
performance...

Anyway, I have high hopes that 10.2 will be a good upgrade!

If (NDA-breaking) rumors prove true, 10.2 should run much better and
even faster than previous releases. However, all PowerBooks except for
the newest revision cannot take advantage of Quartz Extreme. I don't
know how far down the road Apple intends to support Pismo. But at least
you're not stuck with the woes of Lombard users...

What are the woes of Lombard users? The Rage Pro hack makes QuickTime
videos work full-screen and full-frame. Unfortunately, it's WS users
who're still left in the cold, as the hack doesn't work on WS.

Granted, no s/w DVD decoding on Lombard/Wallstreet, but I'm probably one
of the few who couldn't care less about that. I can watch VCDs in X now,
and that's what counts (using MacVCD - QT doesn't work as there's no s/w
MPEG-1 decoder in X).

Cheers,

No hardware graphics acceleration.
No hardware OpenGL support.
No hardware acceleration of QuickTime content.
No DVD-Video playback support.

No, they don't work. Or more accurately, your mileage *will* vary.

I have even more sympathy towards Wallstreet users.

Well, Lombard needs speedier hardware to decode DVDs in software. But
hardware decoding beats out software decoding any day. I'm surprised
that I still hear occasional complaints from TiBook owners with the
occasional DVD skipping, yet another software issue.
