Re: On the road again

2003-01-30 Thread Thomas Ethen
I use exactly the same setup, but with a bungee cord instead of a strap to
hold it in place. Normally I use my 2300c instead of my Pismo, because it is
smaller and cheaper to replace if anything happens to it. I have a Garman
GPS III+ on the dash, but the screen on the 2300c and the Street Atlas map
is really great and much larger than the GPS III+.

I also wish they would bring back support for the Mac, but version 6 still
works for me 99% of the time.

I've been running OSX on my Pismo 400 since the beta. Runs wonderfully. I
use Classic on occasion, though more often when I am traveling because I
haven't quite migrated from Claris Emailer (which runs great in Jaguar's
Classic BTW).
I just upgraded the RAM to 768MB and have a 30GB in 2 partitions: 6BG for
OS 9.2 and OS 9 apps, and the rest for OSX, its apps and all all my
personal docs.

OSX is great Jaguar is heads and shoulders above 10.1.

Pismo, G4, Printer Sharing and DeskJet 5550

2003-01-30 Thread Scott Crick
Hi All!

This one has me stumped!

I am attempting to use Printer Sharing in Mac OS X 10.2.3 with an HP DeskJet
5550. The printer is connected to my QuickSilver G4/933 and prints fine from
that system.

I am attempting to set up my Pismo (Rev. B) 400 running 10.2.3 to print to
this printer. The driver is installed on the Powerbook. The printer shows up
in the Print Center and shows that the printer is a remote printer connected
to the G4.

However, any attempt to print on the PowerBook will cause whatever
application is attempting to print to unexpectedly quit even before the
Print dialog box appears.

The HP is a printer that I purchased about a month ago. Before, I used an
Epson Stylus 740. I was able to print fine via Printer Sharing to this
printer. It was not until I attempted to use the HP from the PowerBook that
I experienced problems.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong and how I can go about
getting printing to work from my PowerBook again?

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,

Scott

Re: Pismo to X, or not?

2003-01-30 Thread Mark_PHILIP

Hi Kate.
I'm using a Pismo 400 with 192MB RAM & OSX runs well on it.
It's not as snappy as in 9, but it's acceptable for a system wiht 192MB.
I prefer the snappiness of OS9, but there are some good apps in X as well.
It really depends on what apps you use.
I find myself shuttling between 9 and X, but 320MB of RAM should suffice
for speedy performance in 10.2.

For instance, I use Nisus Writer a lot (9 or classic only), so I find
myself using OS9 a lot more than X. Other than Omnigraffle, I don't have an
intense need to use OS X. But superior memory management and UNIX stability
is very enticing indeed. I will shift over when I get a memory upgrade to
1GIG.

Enjoy!

Re: On the road again

2003-01-30 Thread Byron Gardner
The PowerBook is secured with a nylon strap running between the back
cushion and seat underneath and back up to the front of the seat. Then
I buckle it together after crossing the strap over the PowerBook over
the On/Off button area. The strap is about 3/4 inch wide so this allows
me to cover only the top buttons but not any keys. I cinch it tight and
that keeps the PB still. Granted, it won't stop the PB from flying in a
wreck or rearender, but does work for a hard brake. I learned the hard
way when I sent it flying during one trip before I used the strap.
Braked hard at a light and it went flying off the seat. Fortunately, my
soft side portfolio was in the floor and padded the fall. I decided
never again so came up with the strap. I looked into getting a mount
for laptops but that cost several hundred dollars. Maybe I will make
one someday...

I follow the progress on the screen just the way you think I do.
Glances back and forth. Keep in mind that I rarely look at it while
underway until I get close to my destination. I meet with many
companies in many cities in IL and MO. I locate the address on the
roadside prior to arrival and mark the destination. Then, as I get
closer, I refer to the map onscreen to see streets and turns. It is no
difference to someone glancing at a map as they drive. I'm not talking
constant staring at the screen anymore than you would constantly stare
at a paper map.

The GPS is magnificent to use and very accurate. It is just too bad
that Delorme has decided to drop support to Mac users. Even at version
6.0, my Street Atlas is still very accurate.

And so it goes...

I got OS X on my Pismo since 10.1, I think, and, even if I was almost always
booted in OS X, when I got 10.2, I've never looked back. Sure, there are a
few things that are not as snappy than in 9, but after a little while, you
discover what multitasking and protected memory really mean!

Hi

I can't speak for the Pismo but I'm running OSX Jaguar on a 266Mhz
wallstreet with 320meg ram and Its running fine with no real obvious
slowdown I can see from 9.2.2 on the same machine. I would think with the
faster CPU and the faster Bus OSX sould run great on a Pismo

All I have on my Pismo is OS X v.10.2.3, no OS 9 at all. I just
upgraded the RAM and hard drive to 768MB/40GB 5400rpm but I had been
running a 400MHz/320MB/10GB for about a year and it has been very well,
I can't stand to work in 9 on it so I just took it off. 10.2 is very
snappy for me.

Well, got home tonight and the FedEx box to ship my processor back for
refurbishment was here. Decided I check out my sleep problem before I take
the beast apart for the upgrade.

Started up in OS 9.2.1 and tried to get it to go to sleep, the screen goes
dark, sleep light blinks once and it immediately wakes up. Same thing in OS
10.2.3! Close the lid, sleep light blinks but I can hear the hard drive
cycling. With all the other tests I've run, I'm now fairly certain my power
manager card is faulty. I guess I'll spend the time waiting for my upgrade
being returned trying to confirm it.

Anyone on the list ever see the power manager fail this way? Resetting per
the Apple technical article does no good, neither does zapping the PRAM.

The processor cycling issue is related to the use of the USB card,
IIRC. I haven't heard anything related processor upgrades.

Re: Considering CPU upgrades for wallstreet

2003-01-30 Thread Byron Gardner

Battery life for me has been shorten but not excessively. As we all
know there are some many variables when it comes to measuring battery
life. I have a battery in each bay for both of my WS PB's and I can get
on average 2.5 to three hours of life. Be advised that I use a PC card
for Firewire and USB and this will take additional power.

If I really wanted to I could scale down power usage and extend this to
3.5 to 4 hours max.

One thing to note about using a Sonnet upgrade--you can't use processor
cycling in OS 9 as this will lock up the PowerBook. I am talking
freezing solid. Sonnet will tell you this in their literature. They're
right.

I am using Street Atlas w/ a GPS connected to a USB card while driving.
Very useful and last about 2 hours. I have a power converter in the car
when the batts get low.

I too have a question regarding the processor upgrades for the
wallstreet machines. What can one expect for battery life after the
upgrade especially for the G4 upgrade? Can someone who has the upgrade
comment on this?
Also to clarify a point made earlier, not all powerbook series II
machines (first series wallstreet, second series PDQ, of the
"wallstreet" series II powerbook) have a 66mhz bus speed. The original
292mhz and others of the "wallstreet" powerbook series have an 82mhz
bus speed as a comment was made earlier indicating that all of the
wallstreet and PDQ series had a 66mhz bus speed. See lowendmac.com's
profile on the machines for clarification on the machine's naming
scheme which as usual, is quite confusing.

The first generation Wallstreet had a 66 MHz bus on the low end 233 MHz
model, and an 83 MHz bus on the 250 and 292 MHz models. After that,
Apple standardized on the 66 MHz bus, so the 266 and 300 MHz
Wallstreets (second generation) both have 66 MHz buses. All Lombards
use a 66 MHz bus.

Hello List Members

I followed the recent discussions about Wallstreet upgrades with interest.
The comments about the WS 66 mhz bus speed "capping" real world performance
improvements was well-taken.

I was considering a Lombard and checked the bus speed of those models at
Apple Spec. Apple says the Lombard has a 66/83 mhz bus.

Does anyone know what a 66/83 mhz bus speed means?

Re: Considering CPU upgrades for wallstreet

2003-01-30 Thread Luca Rescigno
Well, as he said, it would run on the regular firmware instead of
requiring software to run. Are there problems when attempting to boot
up from a volume that doesn't have the special software installed on
it? For example, a system installer CD?

I'm not exactly sure how it works... the only accelerator I've ever
owned was a Radius 25 MHz 68020 for an SE PDS slot, and somehow it
managed to always work even if I didn't have the drivers installed on
the startup disk. Maybe it was part of the processor's firmware or ROM
or something.

Which makes me think... perhaps other accelerators require you to send
you original card in, so they can upgrade the firmware to work with the
new processor that they put on the original card? In that case, having
an entire daughtercard replacement would be a big advantage because you
wouldn't have to send anything in.

Anyway, I'm not quite sure what I'm talking about so anyone, feel free
to correct me on any points.

FWIW, we're going to be releasing a 500mhz G3 card for the Wallstreet within

I was fairly involved in the off-topic banter and I told the list
publicly that I would make every effort to stop. I am telling that to
the list again right now.

I'm glad that the off-topic messages have died down, but it's
unfortunate that now the list is still polluted with complaints even
after most people agreed that it would be stopped. So, everyone, keep
your shirt on, and how about we just have a good time talking about G3
and G4 based laptops! I won't send any more messages that are off
topic... this will be the last one. And I think it's everyone's
responsibility to warn the people discussing a topic when it starts to
go off-topic, so we can prevent this. I know when I used to get
repeated messages from the list mom because I would forget to delete
the ads at the bottom when replying... well, after I had been told
quite a few times, I got a more firm one saying that if I did that any
more, I'd be temporarily banned. Now I haven't done that in ages.

We can all work together to ensure that everyone is at least somewhat
happy. There will always be conflicts, when one person wants their
topic to continue and another wants it to die, but we should at least
keep it Mac-related.

When you put in the upgrade, the bus is downclocked to 66mHz. All of
the upgrades I've seen only support 66mHz in Wallstreet and Lombard G3s.

Re: Considering CPU upgrades for wallstreet

2003-01-30 Thread Gary E Davis
Thanks Byron

I knew about the 66mhz bus speed. For what I usually do this is not a big
problem, Makes me wonder how this upgrade does on the series 1 wallstreets
with their 83Mhz bus

Thanks Hal

Course there's also the low Vram Only 4meg. Makes me think it might be a
good idea to sell everything and hold out for a Pismo or a TIBook

Another thing to remember, besides the 66mHz bus speed, is the limited
graphics chip. The Wallstreet and Lombard use the older Rage Pro
architecture. The Pismo and Rev.A Tibook use the Rage128 Mobility. It's
noticeably faster. It's not as fast as the Radeon, but it's much faster
than the Rage Pro.

Good point. I neglected to mention. This can be a big issue for OS X,
although I have not had any problems to date. Some screensaver graphics
and similar items run choppy.

Thanks,

Re: Considering CPU upgrades for wallstreet

2003-01-30 Thread Byron Gardner
Gary, let me give you my experiences.

I have two WS PB, a 14 in screen and a 13 in screen. I have put a
Sonnet G3 500Mhz in both with easy installation and no problems in
operation. I am running OS 10.2.3 on both as well as OS 9.2.2. Neither
have had any problems.

But be aware of something that most people overlook. No matter what
upgrade you install, the WS PB will only have a Bus speed of 66 MHZ.
You can install a G3 500MHz or a G4 500Mhz and you will still only have
a 66Mhz bus speed. That means that you can have all that power but it
gets choked down. That is why you will never see increases like the
present day PB which have 100 Mhz buses or better.

Now, you will see a speed increase with the upgrades mentioned above.
It will be noticeable and you won't want to go back to what you had.
Benchmark testing will confirm an improvement in speed.

Some have indicated an increase in temperature after the upgrade. I do
see a noticeable higher temp but nothing unbearable or dangerous.
Always use the PB with good circulation and not a lap pad or pillow
that restricts air flow. O/W you should be Okay.

Executive Summary:

- Noticeable speed increase with some elevation in operating temp.
- Not the same as newer PB due to bus speed limitations.

Best Regards,
Byron

Hi Andre

Here's the site http://www.sonnettech.com/

It appears they are easy to install. The 500Mhz G3 upgrade is listed at $300
and the 500Mhz G4 is $400

Try something basic like a PRAM reset. I have a iBook running OS X that
started to wake when closed and sleep when open. The 1st thing I tried
was a PRAM reset, on the restart I ran fsck (no problems.) All is well
now.

As I said need to look at a couple of other things before I make a final
diagnosis, BTW has anyone had any experience with power manager

I agree. If this constant banter of politics, NASA, the Simpson does not stop, I will
un-subscribe this children's gossip site and will find a list that is geared towrad

This list has turned into a bunch of coffee clutching old ninnies!

I am sick of wasting my time looking through e-mail after e-mail that contains nothing

I often have Entourage v.X and iChat up and running, with Entourage set to
check mail every 10 minutes and it doesn't prevent my Pismo from sleeping
nor does it wake it up. There must be something else with your setup...

I usually have Entourage set to check mail every 10 minutes so I wonder if
it may be causing the wake-up; but really, I just haven't taken the time to
see exactly what is going on. I usually have Entourage and one or two web
browsers going such as Safari, Explorer, or Navigator. I know that well
behaved applications should not cause the machine to wake up which is why I
am still inclined to suspect I have a problematic power manager. I just need
to take the time to isolate the problem by dropping back to OS 9 and seeing
if I can get it to sleep there, if it does, it can't be a power manager
problem, it will have to relate to OS X. No conclusions until I see how it
runs in OS 9.

Also running Pismo 10.2.3 and have had no sleep problems. I had minor
problems getting the PB to sleep under earlier versions of Jaguar and OSX
10.1 but this rendition seems to work for the Pismo. Though, if I have a
non-optical mouse attached it seems to not want to go to sleep the first
time I put it to sleep and does not reliably go to sleep on its own when
inactive. My optical mouse (small mouse for traveling) causes no such
problems.

fsck is file system check, a unix util that fixes file system
inconsistencies often run at startup. The normal shutdown procedure
involves running 'sync' which flushes file system buffers etc to disk
and does clean up (in the terminal do 'man sync' if curious.) Not that
it matters. Search for 'verbose' on www.macosxhints.com (or is it .org?)
and go to the startup key sequence hint. I think it is command-v during
boot. I suggest this just to see what is taking so long during boot...
And hypothesized it is fsck.

On Thursday, January 30, 2003, at 08:31 AM, Ed Zelinsky wrote:

> What is fsck?

File System Consistency Check (?)

Here's how to run it:

At the startup chime, hold down (Command-S) through the gray Apple
screen until you see the Command line on a black background; then you
can let go. Allow the single-user mode (command line) to start-- you'll
see a prompt-- and type the following:

/sbin/fsck -y

(Yes, you do need to put that space in there)

It will go through a series of checks, and when finished, will either
say:

***FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED***

-or-

***The volume (your HD name here) appears to be okay.***

I usually run fsck as many times as needed to get the "okay" message
(which has never been more than twice). After you get the okay message,
type:

reboot

And your mac will do your bidding.

_

In order to *see* this stuff while you start your computer, hold down
(Command-V). This is known as verbose logging, and makes it easy to see
if there is anything slowing your computer at startup time. You can't
actually access the command line when you do this, but it can prove to
be quite educational to watch.

10.2.3 on my Pismo. No problem sleeping. Going to sleep when Ethernet is
connected than waking up and switching to AirPort, and vice versa. With
Internet-based applications (Entourage, Safari) running or not. I haven't
tested with PhotoShop 7, though, so I can't comment. But I have absolutely
no sleep problem in all kind of configurations. There might be a specific
pattern of apps or settings in your case and we would have to know it in

such and such, I don't have any sleep problem.

Gates's Law: "The speed of software halves every 18 months." This oft-cited
law is an ironic comment on the tendency of software bloat to outpace the
every-18-month doubling in hardware capacity per dollar predicted by Moore's
Law. The reference is to Bill Gates; Microsoft is widely considered among
the worst if not the worst of the perpetrators of bloat.

Re: wallstreet networking mystery

2003-01-30 Thread Russell Holt

> So, as I understand it, you have a router and then a hub?

Yes... And I certainly believe the hub could be flaky and needing a
constant kick in the reset button.. Or tossed in the trash... But still
that doesn't explain the loss of the hardware address on the wallstreet.
Maybe the hub is sending a surge through it and somehow overloading the
powerbook's poor ethernet adapter? I'm sure I sound like a moron to the
hardware guys (I'm just a programmer)...

By the way, the Apple system profiler shows a serial number of "not
applicable" also... Related?

Thanks for the thoughts.

Pismo Sleep Problem

2003-01-30 Thread Keith Potter
My Pismo has started having trouble in recent weeks. It sometimes
shuts down instead of going to sleep when I close the lid. When this
happens, and I restart, it takes a looong time for the grey logo
screen to give way to the "Welcome to OSX" screen. Has anyone had
similar experiences? Does anyone know a fix? I am running 10.2.3 with
all the updates.

Thanks in advance...

Re: Wallstreet memory question

2003-01-30 Thread Anne Judge

It's actually that you can up it to 512 rather than the (something
really small - 192??) official Apple max.

At the time it came out only 128-Meg chips would fit it, & they
didn't come low-profile so only 64 in the lower slot - total 192.

Since then, chips have gotten smaller & bigger (physically &
RAm-wise, respectively). But the WallStreet can't handle above 256Mb
chips that I've ever heard.

Wallstreet memory question

2003-01-30 Thread Gary E Davis
Hi

I've heard a wallstreet can actually be up'd to 1gig instead of the 512k max
claimed by apple. Is this true?

Gary
