No, you would actually need more speed. iChat AV requires a G3 processor of
at least 600MHz. I'm using the shareware iChatUSBCam from Ecamm Network at
 Ecamm.com to remove this limitation.

I believe that you need at least a 600MHz G3 to use video chat.

 Hi Laurent, Nikon,

That's for the heads up. Is there another hack aside from iChatUSBCam
wherein I can go in and simply edit the install or load requirement using a
text editor? I have investigated the plist file and other files and can't
find the check code. I've also googled and most hacks refer to iChatUSBCam.
Want something more root I can perform myself...

 Any ideas?

Sorry, no other idea...

Worked great.

Has anyone attempted/installed from these (all-on-one) DVDs?

The disc appears to be the grey color (OEM?) like the eMac CDROM sets

Not 'a friend of a friend' anecdotal, but actual, first-hand experience,

Also, if it indeed can mount on the Pismo'a drive, can I backup the DVD's

Any and all personal experiences you can share will be quite appreciated.

Notch one up for the IBM Travelstar on the Lombard (mines 333Mhz). Got a
20 Gb, way back - can't even remember when after 10.1 came out I thing.
Installed it myself. No probs since then. Now running 10.3.

I had the same problem with my Lombard 400. The Fujitsu drive I ordered
from Other World Computing absolutely would not boot. After a lot of
 trouble
shooting, OWC determined the drive was not compatible with my 'Book.

Swapped it for an IBM Travelstar, and never looked back.

Firewall's and DSL

2004-04-05 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
I finally got DSL up here in the wilds, it's static connection. Using a
Paradyne modem connected to a Net-gear 614 v2
router. I am using a Pismo with 10.3.3 with a small OS 9 partition,
connected right now through a 802.1X connection in internet connect.

I did not load any of the software that came with the router and the
modem although the router has a set up page to load your mail settings
and connection info, port selection a whole lot of stuff for someone
used to just using an airport set up, which by the way does not work
very well with this DSL the signal is so weak I cant get 50 feet, was
going to do a bridge set up a little later and put another airport in
the house for better reception to get better coverage. On set up there
were a few choices, i.e. allowing a ping, selected no and one or 2
other items that were recommend to not enable as this would allow
access to the computer.

As the Pismo loads I see a section on firewall loading. I imagine this
is part of the OS 10.3.3.

So am reasonably safe with what I have or I don't have ?

I will be adding to this network with a airport, and a another hub for
the trusty 6100 G3, another Pismo and a G3 1400, printers, etc., no
problems with neighbors picking up the airport, unless the moose count.

I do online banking, stocks, and some legal work and medical work.

I always log out and quit I.E. or Safari when doing some serious work
and then restart the I.E. when I go just browsing, I do not restart the
computer until done for the day and ready for the next day.

I know nothing is really safe but would like a few road blocks if it's
prudent and not just throwing money away.

Any recommendations for software or hardware, that would make life
more secure or is what I have reasonable or am I really directing
traffic in the naked and the moose is going to take all my online info
with the antler antenna .
Thanks for any help
Geoff

Re: Wallstreet Powerlogix G3 500 vs Sonnet G4 500

Beniamino, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

I recently moved to a 15 aluminum, but I am still using at time the
Wallstreet w/Bluechip 500 Mhz.

I was wondering to replace the Bluechip with a Sonnet G4. Has anybody
a direct experience? Is there a noticeable speed gain?

The G4 will generally give you faster graphics because all Aqua graphics
is processed by the CPU as opposed to the video card in newer Mac models
and a G4 will do that faster, in most cases much faster. Also some apps
that benefit from the G4s faster processing of graphic related
mathematics will run faster. In some cases that may mean the difference
between usable and not usable. Graphically related mathematics is used in
more apps that we first think of, like in a web browser or document
creation with graphics or especially with apps like Audio or DivX and
SVCD video. I know this firsthand as I had a Wallstreet with 500Mhz G4 in
my hands for repair during some weeks a while ago. Expect a more
responsive machine, but at the same time don't expect big wonders. And
study carefully if the apps you often use will take advantage of the G4.

Have you maxed the RAM to 512 MB? This is equally important.

If your concern is the moose...then you're fine. OSX is quite solid out
of the box. Go to the sharing pane and turn off any services you don't
use (it defaults pretty much to nothing on, anyway) and make sure the
firewall is on. (next tab).

If you're in the boonies, you probably don't have to worry about anyone
latching on to your airport signal as someone camping within 100 feet
would be noticeable.

All of your online banking,. medical and legal stuff should be done via
secure servers, so that's safe.

I'd say sit back and laugh at the moose. It's hard for them to type
anything with those hooves, they're more brute-force hackers...;-)

Appletalk question

2004-04-05 Thread John Slavin
At my office I have a small network. My secretary has an iMac which is
the main location of files. Besides her, there are three other
computers that access these files and save and edit files located
there. Under her user name, in the public directory, we have a
directory for our office. In that directory I have two folders, one
with forms (with many subfolders) and one for clients (with many
subfolders for each client). The folder for forms is read only and
only my secretary can save to it with finalized, perfected forms. I
want everyone to have access to save and edit to the client folder.
The way it works, however, is that whoever creates the folder is the
only one who can access it for anything other than read only. Of
course that can be manually changed by going to get info and changing
the ownership and permissions for the folder as well as files within
the folder. I'd much prefer this to be automatic. Is there a way to
do this or am I missing something.

Pismo Expansion Bay Brainstorming

2004-04-05 Thread Jim
Hello Listers,

One of my expansion bay VST zip 100 drive modules for my Pismo is dead.
I suspect it's just the zip mechanism that's gone, and not the
bridging board inside the module. Since I don't need another zip
drive, that left me wondering what options I might have for putting
OTHER devices in the module, such as hard drive, flash media readers,
Firewire 800 / USB2 adapters, or even CD-R mechanisms. I'm
brainstorming here! What great ideas do you all have? Where might I
buy the needed part(s) and what adaptors or drivers might be needed? I
want to have some fun with this, and you can be a part of it!

The XPF documentation didn't make it clear for me how XPF is used. I

I just got a ibook with panther on it. When I try to select classic it gives

Pismo ethernet auto sensing??

2004-04-05 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
Is the ethernet port on a G3 PowerBook (Pismo) auto sensing or did
that come only to more recent PowerBooks?

If you don't know what I mean by auto-sensing, I mean can it set up
an ethernet network to another Mac without a hub, switch or router -
by use of an ethernet cable only - and it doesn't matter if the
cable is normal or cross-over? An auto sensing PowerBook would be
able to tell and adjust accordingly.

The speed difference here is largely attributable to the G4, but the

The iBook drive will be both smaller and slower than the G4. The

Battery: iBook Clamshell

2004-04-05 Thread Kyle Lee
Hello everyone,

As much as I know about Macs, there are many things that I do not know.
With that said, I purchased an iBook Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery
from a guy on eBay. He said on his auction page, and I quote (cut and
paste):

Battery in great condition and works fine. Great to have as a
backup...

I received it today and installed into a Tangerine iBook running OS
9.2.2 and No Charge. So I put into my Indigo iBook running OS X 10.2 8
and I get the Red X after about 60 seconds.

Is there a trick, a reset or a workaround before I get into a debate
with this guy.

Thanks for any insight into this.

Clamshell iBook: Screen Question

2004-04-05 Thread Kyle Lee
I have an Indigo iBook running OS X 10.2.8. Once in a while, after the
machine has gone to sleep and I wake it up, the screen seems dark
somewhat, especially around the perimeter. And after about 10-15
minutes, it returns to the original brightness and sometimes it stays
that way until it goes to sleep again. Upon waking up, it is fine. Any
clues? I recall seeing discussions concerning the backlight?

Thanks for any help on this.

You don't need xpf for jag on a beige g3. max the video ram, max the system

Re: Pismo ethernet auto sensing??

2004-04-05 Thread Paul Simoneau
My Pismo has an auto-sensing Ethernet card.

Auto-sense means the card will automatically adjust for a 10 million
bits per second or a 100 million bits per second connection. The other
end of the connection (a fixed speed hub; an auto-sensing or fixed
speed switch interface; a fixed speed router interface; or another
auto-sensing Mac) will dictate the speed negotiated. If the ends are
both auto-sensing then they will negotiate for the highest speed both
can handle.

To set up a connection to another Mac, you simply need to use a
crossover Ethernet cable. If you use a straight thru cable, you will
have to use two and a hub. You will also be restricted to the speed of
the hub.

Let me know If you need more info.

466SE). And the replacements were M6392 higher capacity for the later
clamshell iBooks (extra runtime in first generation). I don't remember,
but there may be a battery reset on Apple's website that you can try.
If not, good luck with the guy.

Hello everyone,

As much as I know about Macs, there are many things that I do not
know. With that said, I purchased an iBook Lithium Ion Rechargeable
Battery from a guy on eBay. He said on his auction page, and I quote
(cut and paste):

Battery in great condition and works fine. Great to have as a
backup...

I received it today and installed into a Tangerine iBook running OS
9.2.2 and No Charge. So I put into my Indigo iBook running OS X 10.2 8
and I get the Red X after about 60 seconds.

Is there a trick, a reset or a workaround before I get into a debate
with this guy.

Thanks for any insight into this.

Use the Battery Reset installer (under OS9), it will put an extension
into your system folder which will reset the battery. Restart into 9
again and with any luck the battery will then show up OK.

Re: Pismo ethernet auto sensing??

2004-04-05 Thread Jim Scolman
Hi, I think most modern macs will sense between a crossover cable
or a standard ethernet cable, therefor either may be used without a
hub/switch/etc. Thanks, Jim.
On Apr 5, 2004, at 5:30 PM, Paul Simoneau wrote:

Re: Pismo Expansion Bay Brainstorming

2004-04-05 Thread Dan K
Jim [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:

Open the EBM and take a look at what you've got. A cheap-ass Zip drive
(really! take a look at it!), a dumb (no electronics) interface board and
a plastic and sheet metal shell. Examine the interface board and try to
imagine what other devices might possibly share that peculiar Zip-drive
connector.

Sorry I'm being a wise-guy, but I have yet to see any device that shares
that [EMAIL PROTECTED] Zip-drive connector. I've had the same idea as you, but
sadly I've found nothing to replace it except another Zip drive. :-(

Yeah, I suppose one could fabricate another interface connector from the
existing Zip connector on the IF board to some other connector type, but
that sure seems like a lot of bother. Maybe I'm prejudiced though, 'cause
my general opinion of Zip drives is - the farther you can throw it the
better off you'll be. G

If for some unknown reason (perhaps you're masochistic? :-) you wanted to
just replace the Zip mech with another, you can find them on eBay.

I've got a lot of such EBMs as this and if only for completeness I really
should get around to putting up some details and pics on my EBM page
(though I haven't yet):

Sounds easy enough, but it sure won't work for me! I boot my iceBook
from the OS 9.2.2 disc, and start the install, but it says it can't
find a valid destination volume. I then started up Drive Setup, and try
to mount the hard drive, but it says it can't mount the drive. The only
option I get is to initialize the drive, which I obviously don't want
to do. Looks like a no-win to me. Any suggestions?
