PBs Lombard and Pismo display housings are different but the LCDs inside are almost certainly interchangable. Rather than tear apart an LCD for the BL, wouldn't it be easier to just switch the LCDs, yes? And since you mention the *cough*manuals*/cough*, note that none contain any instruction on how to open and operate on an LCD's guts. Alternatively, source a new BL CCFL bulb, typical cost is $10 - $20 for the part. Hm, I seem to remember folks recommending a supplier named JKLamps or similar. Anyone have a CCFL source they can recommend? Keep in mind, if you have _any_ doubts about replacing the BL bulb yourself, it's probably best to not do it. I just wanted to make a comment (and I am top responding because that is Mail.app's default and I don't know how to change it... I am lazy butt too!). I've had my Pismo since Sept. 2000 and noticed after a few months of use that the screen would be pinkish on waking from sleep. There was a lot of doom and gloom at the time on various lists and discussion boards, speculation that the Pismo screens were bad. Some folks apparently went an got screen or back light replacements. Like I said, my Pismo would wake from sleep pinkish, but within a few minutes the screen was back to normal brightness and color, so I just lived with it. I haven't had the strong pinkish tone since using Jaguar and now Panther. PowerBook update.
Hi, It's me again. I have followed the advice of several people here (thanks again) and instead of a spiffed-up Combo edition I went for the stock SuperDrive 15 model. I ordered it today at a local Apple Store and I've been told I should expect it someday next week. Yay. I will purchase the AppleCare later this year, and probably also go for some extra memory. I already made a custom wallpaper for my current notebook. :) http://www.aci.com.pl/mwichary/myothercomputer2.jpg Anyway, I have two newbie questions. 1. I have visited my insurance company to ask about insuring the notebook. I have yet to go through the detailed terms and conditions (they're in Dutch, which I barely understand), but during a quick conversation the lady at the counter said something like the insurance is only valid if the notebook is visibly damaged. I am new to this kind of thing; is this normal? What happens if I drop the notebook (knock on wood) and the hard disk dies, but you can't see it? 2. I have access to Mac OS X Public Beta and I might have also access to Mac OS X DP editions and 10.0/10.1. Will they work at my new PowerBook? Is it possible to partition the hard disk so that, say, 75 gigs are devoted to Panther and 5 gigs to one of the older systems, and they won't clash? Thanks in advance for help on those. I also welcome any tips (or links to them) for first-time Mac notebook user. :) Marcin Wichary e:\ [EMAIL PROTECTED] w:\ www.aci.com.pl/mwichary Attached w:\ www.aci.com.pl/mwichary/GUIdebook Graphical User Interface gallery w:\ www.10yearsofbeingboring.com 10 years of Being Boring w:\ www.usability.pl Usability.pl -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... iBook battery
I have a dual USB iBook, 600mhz (16VRAM) with an interesting battery issueOne battery runs for about five minutes, and the computer seems to count down the time correctly - or at least to 95 percent, where it immediately goes to sleep. With the other battery, it says that I have about 10 minutes of time left, which is incorrect. I tested it today, and while on battery power I downloaded the 4.6 version of iTunes, installed it, and played music for an astounding 2 hours and 25 minutes. For most of this time, the battery indicator on the menu bar was red, and when it got to zero it just showed calculating. When it is plugged in, the battery only shows a single flashing light when I push the test button. I dunno how common this is - the only provision my insurance has is that it won't cover theft from an unattended car. Interestingly, my car insurance does cover this! I think that most of the damage coverage you are looking for would come in under the provision of visual damage with a few exceptions. Anyway - be sure that damage caused by electrical storm or surges is covered. We are less likely to be damaged by an electrical surge since the transformer is outside the computer but it can still happen, especially if the computer is connected to the phone or network via wire. Also, look at theft coverage. Mine covers the cost of replacing my computer (full replacement), software, and the cost of renting a replacement while waiting for repair or replacement. The new computer will come with Panther so you needn't worry about older versions - which probably won't run anyway. As Apple releases new computers there is a tendency for older OS versions to not be compatible. For example, my tangerine ibook came with OS 8.x and OS 7.x wouldn't boot it as I found out (not really expecting otherwise) when the drive crashed big time on the road all I had was an old version of Norton Utilities with me. Free Wi-Fi HotSpots. . .
Hello All, Just found out my city has free Wi-Fi hotspots throughout. . .including but not limited to business (coffee shops) and parks. How does this work? Can I just waltz on over to a park, sit down, boot up my Airport enabled Pismo and surf? Is it that easy? Or are there configs? Anyone who might know. . .let me know. Thanks! As a side note, you might want to be concerned about security using an open network in places like malls, coffee shops, outside benches etc. There is at least the potential for anyone nearby picking up data from your connection. If, however, all you want to do is surf the web then you might not have anything worth hijacking. Email is another story though, assuming you don't use a SSL email account. You will be exposing not only your email messages, but also your password and account. Speaking of using a hotspot for email, it's been my experience that most of these locations will allow you to retrieve your email, but not send any. It's the same situation as an ISP that won't allow relaying to protect against SPAMers. Just as couple of things to keep in mind when exploring hotspots. I've played around with the way the address and the subject shows on my email program -Netscape- and have had occassional luck with them stopping. Currently no problems. Something about the not getting sorted off correctly and also it is very finicy about the way the subject reads. Luis Autrique wrote: I too get them. Re: Retail store Auto Adapter for 15 Powerbook (1.5ghz)
Well rats. I've got a 9 hour car trip tomorrow and forgot to order a car adapter for my Powerbook. Does anyone know of a mainline computer/electronics store that sells an auto-adapter for 15 Powerbooks? I'm going to be near Charleston WV and expect they may have a Best Buy/Circuit City/etc. What about those generic adapters that let you plug any regular AC plug into the car lighter? Has anyone used any of those? Yes, I have used those with my laptop and they are great. I have one made by 'Coleman' and another off brand with no problems from either. Late reply, but my Juice power adapter works quite well in the car with my 17 PB. I've used it on a bunch of trips w no issues -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
