Re: iBook 500 Questions

2005-04-10 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
1. The 'book can accept an Airport card, but are there limitations on which
cards can be used?
Yes: only the original Airport can be installed, while the WS was
able to manage also the newer 54mbit PCcards

2. It has a 10GB hard drive which is... well, not big. I have a 40GB USB
drive and want to know if the iBook can boot from that drive?
If the USB contains a 2.5 drive I'd suggest to replace the HD. I
don't think you can boot off USB stuff.

3. I'd like to run OS X on the machine and was wondering if the 500 MHz cpu
would give acceptable performance? I don't do graphics stuff... just some
word processing, spreadsheets and listen to an occasional music CD.
I have an iBook like yours with 384 MB RAM, and I admit you must be
very patient with it and OS x 10.3.

On the other hand the WS with a PowerLogix GH3 500 Mhz seems faster
and more responsive than the iBook.

How much RAM do you have?

Re: Repair or Replace PB?

2005-04-10 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga

So... repair or replace? Any opinions?
Replace! and try to sell the broken thing on the ebay.
These aluminium PB are very delicate and if you opt for the
reparation you may end up with a fixed bent and worn 4000 USD laptop!

Ben
all in all LB, HD, RAM, bluetooth module, airport etc... should be
fine and a buyer may be is just behind the corner.

i had that same machine for 2 years. it is a bit slow, but great and

1-you need the old type card. look and ye shall find. they are more
expensive nowadays than the newer cards. mine had it and it worked
well. no problems with reception. actually, it was better than the ti
book.
2- sure, you could do that, but i chose the firewire enclosure for 2
reasons: they are bootable and you don't need an additional power
supply.
3- i ran os 10.3.8 without any problems in the ibook. just remember: it
is not fast, but it is more than acceptable. i mostly used it for the
same things and the occasional dvd watching. one thing: the isight
won't work with it because it needs g3 550+.
good luck!

Backup question, and a tip

2005-04-10 Thread walter
Hello again,
just wondered if anyone had any suggestions about good (and cheap)
remote backup options for Macs.

I considered .Mac, of course. But at the moment the MB allocation seems
rather paltry. SpyMac offers a lot of space for email but not so much
for storage (I think it's again 250MB). One option is of course to
email oneself with one's important files as attachments. But it would
be cumbersome. The ideal arrangement would be a remote server to which
a backup application automatically uploads the changed files for the
day. There are several offerings out there and I was wondering whether
anyone had had good experiences (in Mac-terms) with any of them. I
suppose the ideal space would be 3-5 GB or thereabouts.

And now for the tip: although I love OS X, one thing that gets me is
that when I single-click on a file/folder name in a finder window (I
use the 'view as columns' option), if there is not enough space in the
right column, the left columns gets moved off to the left and the file
name disappears under the next column. It makes getting back to that
column a bit of a pain, especially when it happens all the time. Well,
I've discovered that if you command-click on the file name again (or
any area of the half-hidden column), the left column comes back into
full view again without any need to reach for the scroll bar. Neat, I
thought.

Walter.

I'm a big fan of SuperDuper. I've been using it through the last few
versions and I couldn't be happier. Cheap, easy, highly-functional.
It will back-up to a remote server and I think it has an option to do
the type of incremental backup you want. If not, you could use it in
conjunction w/ChronoSync--there's a nice article on that here:

I am sure you have looked into this. I use an external 5 firewire
enclosure with a 30 GB hard drive. I use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) that

my 30 GB powerbook to the external enclosure in minutes as an image. I

Re: Data Rescue (was iPhoto/iChat Question)

2005-04-10 Thread Muddle Man
Ah, the old Trash Can trick... I work for a large
cable provider and am working with the webmaster
updating Macintosh knowledge base articles. I am
removing any instances that refer to temporarily
putting items in the trash. I used to do it since
that's what all the books say to do. To avoid this
type of thing happening (imagine the added factor of
doing this over the telephone!) I will no longer put
items in the trash.

In order for a folder to get created/recreated the
orignal simply has to be moved from the directory.
Creating a new iPhoto library would work just as well
if the original had been moved to the desktop. Heck
even just renaming it works most of the time (some
programs are smart enough to see the folder even after
renaming it). The trash is out, no pun

Thing is, that left two copies of the iPhoto library
 in the Pictures
folder. I put one in the trash and backed up the
 other... Then I forgot
the other one was in the trash, and a couple of days
 later, having
forgotten I had left the other library in there, I
 clicked on the trash
and chose 'empty trash' out of habit... Needless to
 say, the new
library was the one in the trash...

There are two types of Airport cards. Airport and
Airport Extreme. Two different form factors/pin outs.
Airport is the older type that you must use (802.11b
12Mbps). Airport Extreme is 802.11g @ 54Mbps. The
first iBooks that could use Extreme were the G4 iBooks
(I have a G3 900 and it uses standard Airport).

 2. It has a 10GB hard drive which is... well, not

Can't boot from USB. The USB ports on your iBook are
the ver 1.1 variety. Running an OS off that drive, if
you could, would be unreasonably slow. Better to
perhaps get a larger internal drive. If not that, then
a firewire drive. Solves the boot problem and gets you
more space.

 3. I'd like to run OS X on the machine and was
wondering if the 500 MHz cpu
would give acceptable performance? I don't do
 graphics stuff... just some
word processing, spreadsheets and listen to an
 occasional music CD.

500Mhz will do for that. I've run X on a Bondi Blue
iMac 233, so I know a G3 500 can do it. With OS X,
more RAM is always better. Max RAM is best.

Re: Rebuilt batteries calibration.

Laurent,
	I had a Pismo battery rebuilt. It was not necessary to recalibrate;
mine automatically did it over 5 or 6 recharge cycles; Pismo would just

However the charge LEDs no longer function; small loss.

Yes, I did rebuild a Pismo battery. I think. However, I was unable to

Re: Ti 1ghz

2005-04-10 Thread Muddle Man
Short answer: If a Mac can boot into OS 9 then OS X is
not required to be installed on it as well.

My G3 900 iBook died and I had it repaired only
because I need the ability to boot into OS 9. I create
a lot of web documentation for both OSes. I installed
9 first. Got all my 9 apps installed/running and
configured. Then installed X. I have run both my iBook
and a G4 733 with nothing but OS 9 on the drive.

What got confusing is when Apple stopped making Macs
that could boot into OS 9 and could only run Classic
Mode. In those cases OS 9 was actually installed last,
not first. Takes a little getting used to.

I had assumed that because of this I could somehow
 install *only* OS9 on
this machine. Maybe I'm wrong about this. Do I
have to install both OS10 and
0S9 in order to be able to boot from OS9? And if
 both are installed is there
some interaction between them even when OS9 is
 booted?

If this PowerBook can boot into OS 9, then you
should not need to have OS X
installed. You should be able to boot from an OS 9
 installation CD, as long
as the CD is the commercial version, not an
 installation CD that was bundled
 with another Mac.

Re: Vertical lines on iBook display?

2005-04-10 Thread Muddle Man
Check your iBook against the serial number range on
this page:

It may have a video problem that has been recalled.

If it's not that, it will need to be checked out by an
Apple Certified tech.

 They fill the entire

a black of 2 or 3, then a faint red of 1 pixel, then
right next to it are 2

 is a black strip of

The computer otherwise works fine. I did boot it in

Re: Rebuilt batteries calibration.

2005-04-10 Thread Mark Moreau

 Laurent,
 I had a Pismo battery rebuilt. It was not necessary to recalibrate;
mine automatically did it over 5 or 6 recharge cycles; Pismo would just
continue to operate long after indicating zero; next charge would show
a longer time until it stabilised.

However the charge LEDs no longer function; small loss.

Did you do this rebuilding yourself or have it done? Id love to rebuild my
own Pismo batteries and any info you've got would be appreciated.

It depends on the type of font. If you use OTF (open type face) fonts

Re: Lombard, Pismo LCD

Hi, Dean.
I replaced a damaged Lombard screen a couple of years ago with one
that came from a Pismo. I used the original Lombard
(motherboard-side) cable with the new display without problems. If I
recall correctly, Apple used two different vendors for their Lombard
displays (LG and Hitachi?), so maybe I just got lucky. It's still
working fine to this day, but as always, YMMV.

Cheers,
Rick

Is a Lombard screen assembly interchangeable with a Pismo, or do they have
different connectors on the motherboard?

I dunno where all the other respondants are (not) getting their info, but
the Dual USB iBooks can indeed boot from an external USB drive. Not that

Rule of thumb for USB booting:
A Mac is bootable if it has USB _and_ AGP-based video (incl. those macs

Re: Rebuilding batteries

2005-04-10 Thread Stuart Saunders
I had it done in Taipei, cost me 3000 NT which is about US$94.97
Getting over 3.5 hours with screen on full and airport.
But I think it's probably better to buy new (generic) - with warranty
etc, longer times etc . Would certainly not be worth sending to Taipei
from US back for rebuilding.
Newertech and macsales have 7200 mAh Pismo batteries for $160, others
cheaper.

Good luck,
Stuart.

Laurent,
I had a Pismo battery rebuilt. It was not necessary to recalibrate;
mine automatically did it over 5 or 6 recharge cycles; Pismo would
just
continue to operate long after indicating zero; next charge would show
a longer time until it stabilised.

However the charge LEDs no longer function; small loss.

Did you do this rebuilding yourself or have it done? Id love to
rebuild my
own Pismo batteries and any info you've got would be appreciated.
