I purchased the 2430 DL and it works perfectly. You really ought to

Plug it into a TV/something else with S-Video cable
Go into Monitors controlpanel
Setup Arrangment/Mirroring as you wish and you can use it.
It's just like using an external monitor.

AirPort with a phone line is for a dialup Internet connection. It doesn't
have anything to do with faxing. You can use Internet services where you
send an email to a certain recipient and a fax will be delivered, but this
doesn't involve the base station, except for the connection to the Internet.

Subject: replacing optical drive in G4 iBook?

I have a 14 G4 ibook with a dead optical drive (slot loader
cd/cdr/dvd).

I have found sources for new drives and that are fairly
inexpensiveas in under $100.

Has anyone on list had experience replacing the drive? It looks like
its pretty labor/time intensive but doable.

Hoping to hear from someone with some actual hands-on experience so I
can get encouragement, warnings, tips etc.

Thanks!!!

Many things

2005-04-18 Thread Stuart Saunders
Firstly I have to say thanks Bruce for the advice re getting high
quality output from Appleworks. In the print dialogue box, click on
copies and pages, third down is Output Options - here you can save as
pdf or as ps.
Have just printed two large posters from pdfs - 2 sq metres each - and
they are as sharp as a tack - no pixelation!

	2. For the problem of editing pdfs, say filling out downloaded forms,
I find Keynote does this very well - once you have adjusted the page
size. Alignment tools are very handy for producing a very spiffy
document. No loss of resolution, tho it does put a frame around the
doc; will see if I can cure this next time.

	3. I am doing a thesis on intellectual property. Around the middle of
March, there was a story online about the high number of inventions
that don't make it. It had a quote from one of the big wigs at Intel
(may have been Gordon Moore) describing how one particular invention
succeeded more by accident than anything else. He commented something
to the effect that 'there must be many other inventions which don't
make it'
Does anybody recall this story? Possibly Newsweek, NYT, etc. I have
searched bookmarks, histories, online - can't find it.

I would be very grateful if anybody recalls this story and for any
link etc.

Thanks,
Stuart.

I think it gave Intel its future, and for the first 15 years we didn't

Opps. Did I imply that FAXstf is in the system? That is not the case. Apple
delivers fax functionality in the system, but it is quite bare bone - you
can send and receive faxes. When receiving, the faxes can be directed to a
printer automatically or send to e-mail address. That is about it - check
the System Preferences -- Print Fax for details of what can be set. You
will find the number of rings in there. One warning though - when you send
the fax make sure to save a copy as their fax does not do it for you. Also
there is no confirmation that the fax was sent correctly - I guess the
implied confirmation is that the fax goes away from the fax queue - which
means that it was sent correctly.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a utility that can, short of zeroing the

SV: European Powerbooks _ the last word

2005-04-18 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Ben,

All my PB's has had the schuko grounded plug (plug with two round pins
and grounding on the sides). A lot of other things (like laptops) does
not have the grounding though, but all Power Book cables has had it. I
don't know how my new iBook's plug is though. It came with the white
square power supply that looks just like my Airport Express Base, but
the guy I bought it from had lost the plug. He preferred a longer cord,
so he used a standard power cord. Neat how they now use a standard power
cord with the small standard plug so you can just buy any power cord at
places like the Radio Shack... Do you know if you can buy the plug for
the white adapter, without buying a whole new adapter?

My iBook is still in the hospital, poor thing. Checked status on it
today though, and it said they planned to finish it tomorrow. Then
they'll probably use a few days to get it here. I can't wait to get it
back, I really hate using this PC. Only one good thing about it, I have
got a bit more used to the awful little rubber pointing device it has...

Aase :)

usb ports not working?

2005-04-18 Thread Kristina Rost
Dear List,

Why would my USB ports on my G3 beige OS9 fail to recognize my camera, when
it did before I reinstalled 8.6.

I reloaded 9.0 over the 8.6 but still the camera does not show up.

There are USB drivers installed from the camera software...and the camera
software loads but does not see the camera either.

I booted from a 9.0cd with a system folder and it didn't recognize it
either.

i even ran Scsi probe 2.5 for good measure...

thanks
Kristina

Apple Airport Stuff - MAKE Magazine

2005-04-18 Thread Bob Angell
Folks,
Just got the first issue of a magazine called MAKE. Extremely Mac
friendly and there is an excellent article on extending the range of
your Airport Express while traveling or otherwise. Also, another good
article on setting up a wireless MESH network for your home or office.
A friend turned me on to this magazine and read it cover-to-cover over
the weekend ... I highly recommend it!!

Can anybody suggest a reliable auto back-up program or Applescript for
 OS X apps ?
I am regularly adding new photos to iPhoto, as well as many new
entries to iCal and my address book. I would really like to have a
program/script that would automatically back up the new additions on a
daily basis at a certain time.

I use Apple's Backup to backup to an external FW drive. Works great. I
think you have to be a .mac member to get it though.

-patch
I highly recommend SuperDuper!. It's the best backup app that I've
tried, and the best part is that you can customize it in a million
different ways. I've been using it for about 8 mos. and it hasn't let
me down yet. Starting in version 1.5, they include an AppleScript to
run a fully automated daily backup. It's worth the $19.95.

Lexmark 6170 all-in-one on Mac

2005-04-18 Thread Barton Brown
Last year, after reading a couple reviews in Mac publications and
Lexmark's promo literature, I got Such A Deal from BJ's that I bought a
Lexmark 6170 printer/fax/copier/scanner/Bass-O-Matic... only to find
when I got the pig home that there were no Mac drivers -- OS X or
otherwise -- and both Lexmark tech support and several DLs told me
there weren't any such drivers, and most likely never would be. I tried
GIMP Print, with no success, the only thing remotely related to the
problem I found was this:

LOCAL TALK INTEGRATED NETWORK OPTION FOR 4039 OPT
Price: $250.99
Mfr 1325494
This is an internal network adapter that adds AppleTalk interface
capability for Lexmark printers.

Which is LOT of money to have to run a printer in Classic mode.
Anyone else have this problem? Better yet, has anyone found a solution?
Thanks

Apple
delivers fax functionality in the system, but it is quite bare bone -
you
can send and receive faxes. When receiving, the faxes can be directed
to a
printer automatically or send to e-mail address. That is about it -
check
the System Preferences -- Print Fax for details of what can be set.
You
will find the number of rings in there. One warning though - when you
send
the fax make sure to save a copy as their fax does not do it for you.
Also
there is no confirmation that the fax was sent correctly - I guess the
implied confirmation is that the fax goes away from the fax queue -
which
means that it was sent correctly.

From 10.2 - 10.4 there's been steady improvements in speed and

I agree on the G4 issue, though the TiBook is a better system. The main

Re: replacing optical drive in G4 iBook?

2005-04-18 Thread Barton Brown
Avail yourself of the best deal in the world for replacing SuperDrives
(and lots of other stuff: HDs, LCDs, etc.). Go to PowerBookResQ (part
of MacResQ):

http://www.powerbookresq.com/
and check out this, and many other, deals:
PowerBookResQ 8x Dual-Layer SuperDrive 24 Hour Nationwide Full Service
Upgrade for All G4 PowerBooks and G4 iBooks $289.00

When my SuperDrive went Tango Uniform, I called everyone from Apple's
friendly tech-support (hello, Bangalore!), to our local friendly
AppleStore (replace a WHAT, dewd?), to my friendly local Apple VAR (is
that made by Macintosh? I think I've got some info buried here
somewhere...). Apple Tech HQ in Bangalore quoted me $800.00 WITHOUT the
drive. The saggers at the AppleStore quoted me $800.00 WITH the drive,
and the Apple VAR is still digging through a midden of Sinclair ZX-80s,
286s, and disco lights.

Somebody hipped me to PowerBookResQ (and NO, I'm not an employee,
investor, creditor, or groupie -- well *maybe* a groupie -- for
MacResQ), and I called them up. You can just do it online, but I had
questions... MANY questions. They told me it was a good idea to back up
any critical data, just in case, and I did. The very next day FedUp
delivered an extremely sturdy pizza box with lots of customizable foam
cutouts in it. I asked Mr. FedUp to tally a mo, popped my PBG4 in and
off he went (did I mention that this is all pre-paid shipping, included
in the price?). The next day I suffered through a whole day in the shop
without iTunes or the net, but the next morning the pizza box came back
with my PBG4, brand new Matsushita SuperDrive, and not a single piece
of data missing. This was last September, so I wasn't able to take
advantage of the dual-layer SD they're offering now, and it was
actually a little more expensive -- $320 or thereabouts -- back then.
Not a single hiccup since, and I (and YOU) get to keep the box, which
is unbelievably robust.

Considering the price of an Apple-firmware Dual Layer SuperDrive, this
is the no-brainer of the century.

Re: Use S-video out

2005-04-18 Thread Cliff Rediger
Steen,
My Wallstreet has S-Video out.
You need an S-Video cable and
an S-Video external appliance such as TV.
I found that it was a little fussy about the sync between TV on and
booting etc.
But, in the end since the S-Video port is hotswappable
I found that TV on, computer booted, then plug both ends in works.
Make sure other input connections on the TV are disoconnected.
Then select the Open Montor's Control Panel
and play with the settings.
voila, the TV is your monitor

Hi Listers
As a DVD in a Wallstreet is very rare, I am thinking of obtaining a DVD
RW in an external USB case to use with my Wallstreet 233 MHz PDQ.
I know that to watch DVD's I need a PCMCIA Video decoder card, but if I
want to use it as a Back up devices do I still need the decoder card.
Also I have heard that the PIONEER range of DVD RW are compatible with
Mac OS X, is this true.
As I am running OS 10.1.5 what drive should I best select. DVR 109 is a
good option for the future if I want to use it with future Mac models,
but I may not be compatible with the Wallstreet.
Any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks

I'm guessing but I suspect the US cord that comes with the white PB
power adapter is grounded for code reasons. Just why the wall wart

standard power connector inside is so you can use a two wire cable

Sorry... I meant to say Neat how they now use a power supply that uses
the small standard plug, so you can just buy any power cord at places
like the Radio Shack to use with it... I did not mean to say that they
now use standard non-grounded power cables, because I really do not know
how the plug is now, because now it doesn't have a cord, just the plug,
so if you don't want to, you don't have to have all that cord... I love
that, it is so much neater (as long as you are close to a wall outlet,
if you aren't, you can just replace the plug or what you call it, with a
cheap cord). Small details, but neat nonetheless! :)

few newbie questions

2005-04-18 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Greetings g-listers,

Some of you will know me from the P-book list which I've been on for ages,
though mostly lurking for the past year or two.

My very trusty PB1400c has been showing signs of strain, all fixable but
enough to get in the way of work, so I recently found a Tibook 400 in
fabulous condition for a good price. Decided to just get it and start the
switch over

A couple of newbie questions to help get me up to steam.

1) Will a 2.0 USB PC card port give me 2.0 speeds or is there an internal
bottleneck? (How can you tell I've been using a 1400?)

2) As I understand it, any of the battery numbers for the 15 Tibooks
(A1012/M6091/M8244/M8511) will work. Did they get better with time?

3) I take it the choice was either a CD-RW drive or a DVD-CD Rom, which is
what I got. Is the swap easy? Is there a third party option to have both?

4) I've heard hinges are a problem for some? These ones seem fine. What
happens?

5) Can I load OS9.1 straight onto it, then boot from it with a key
combination? (It has 10.2.x and 9.2.x but old software might need 9.1 --
I'll see first if the software will run in classic. Anyone using Word 98
with Endnote 4 in classic?)

6) Any advice about things to watch out for would be appreciated.

Best to you,
Rick

You shouldn't have any problem with 9.2. If an application is compatible
with 9.1, it should be with 9.2.2.

You can hold Option at boot to pick which system you want to start from.

It should be fine, so long as you're running 10.2 or better for USB 2.0
support.

2) As I understand it, any of the battery numbers for the 15 Tibooks

They've gotten *newer* with time, and so hold a better charge...
3) I take it the choice was either a CD-RW drive or a DVD-CD Rom,
which is
what I got. Is the swap easy? Is there a third party option to have
both?

Replacing the drive on these is reasonably easy, see pbfixit.com for
both instructions and parts/prices.

You can go up to a DVD-R/RW superdrive on them.
4) I've heard hinges are a problem for some? These ones seem fine.
What
happens?

Same as any hinge problem, they can loosen, putting extra strain on the
display or flopping about at the wrong angles. However, this is a much
rarer occurrence with TiBooks in my experience.

5) Can I load OS9.1 straight onto it, then boot from it with a key

Nothing I've ever found didn't run in 9.2 if it ran in 9.1...the
differences between these two revs are minimal: pretty much some tweaks
to run as classic better and some OpenGL improvements.

Office 98 will run in classic under OS X, Office 2000 won't (this was
the very last pre-OS X version and wasn't around very long). Endnote
will run in classic, no problems, however upgrading both of those to OS
X versions is definitely recommended.

I ran into one problem with installing Endnote 6 on os x, it has to be
installed by the same user who installed Office, or the installer fails
on a permissions issue. This has very likely been fixed in newer
versions of the EndNote installer. (That one took me a day to figure
outdrove me NUTS!)

Re: replacing an optical drive in a G4 iBook

2005-04-18 Thread Dennis Reeder
Thanks for the info on MacResQ. I had checked them out earlier. All I
want is a new cd/cdr/dvd drive. The drive is available for $89.
Paying MacResQ and additional $229 is out of the question. I
understand there are a zillion screws and it is a tedious time
consuming project but I would like to try it myself. So, I am back to
my original query. If you have done this surgery perhaps you have some
tips. If not I will post my experience in about a week.

NVRAM reset and dead motherboard

2005-04-18 Thread Daniel Colwell
Hello All,
A coworker told me that he was about ready to get a new battery for his
daughters Powerbook. He asked if there was any way to get more out of
the battery she had before he plunked down $150 or so for a new one.

Since I had some luck getting more time out of my Pismo battery, I told
him to try what I had done.

Here are the instructions I gave him:
restart with command-option-O-F to bring up open firmware
type reset-nvram
type reset-all
I got this from : http://www.macintouch.com/laptopbatt.html and it has
been quoted here in G-Books as well.

As I said, it gave my old battery a nice boost. However, things didn't
go as smoothly for him. In fact, the laptop died and would not restart.
Unfortunately he ran out of Applecare just a month or so ago. He took
it in to a local Apple shop and they had to replace the motherboard.
Cost him over $400. They said that it had nothing to do with my help,
but I feel terrible about it. I remember several posting about this and
nothing about any adverse affects.

So... Could running these instructions fry a motherboard? I don't know
exactly what type of Powerbook his daughter has. I could find out if
needed.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Is there a cheap, inexpensive (actually that should read FREE) way of
syncing a folder between a laptop and a tower?
I would like to be able to take my laptop wherever, do some work and
then when I come home and get back onto my LAN the machines
automatically sync the changes or additions I've done. Or vice
versawork on the tower, open the laptop to go and the folders sync.
I tried a demo of You Synchronize awhile back and it trashed files that
I didn't want trashed...and I really took my time to figure out how to
do it., So, I either made a mistake or something was wrong. Of
course, i emailed their support and get no response.
Soany suggestions?

Kevin,
Take a look at SilverKeeper. I've been using it for about a year.
Support was great, especially considering its free. I got a response
the same day as my question.

I use it for backup, but a quick read of the manual shows it has the
capability to sync a folder between computers.

Let me know how you like it if you give it a try.

can send and receive faxes. When receiving, the faxes can be directed
to a
printer automatically or send to e-mail address. That is about it -
check
the System Preferences -- Print Fax for details of what can be
set. You
will find the number of rings in there. One warning though - when you
send
the fax make sure to save a copy as their fax does not do it for you.
Also
there is no confirmation that the fax was sent correctly - I guess the
implied confirmation is that the fax goes away from the fax queue -
which
means that it was sent correctly.

Re: S Video Out 15AL (OS 10.3.9)TV?

2005-04-18 Thread John McGibney
Use the adapter cable that came with your machine and plug the 2 wires
together, one end into the AlBook's S-video port the other into the yellow
plug on your TV's aux input. Get a Stereo adapter cable with the stereo mini
plug on one end and RCA plugs on the other. Plug the RCA ends into the red
and white plugs on the Aux input next to the yellow plug. Plug the mini plug
into the headphone port on your AlBook.

Now you can watch DVDs on the big screen from your PowerBook. You can use
the TV as an additional screen or mirror the PowerBook screen. That¹s how my
kids watched DVDs while visiting the grandparents this past winter. It works
great!

John

How do I feed the video from the S video out port on my 15 AL PB
running 10.3.9 to a tv set?

 Many thanks!

I just saw Jennifer Washburn, author of University, Inc. (she writes
a lot on higher ed issues) on BookTV and she feferred in passing to the
now quaint term 'information superhighway'.

You'd think the OED would leave it as an archaic term. It might be good
for a student in 2040 to have it defined as used in the 1990s/early
2000s.

Re: Network Printer options, Brother MFC 420 CN

2005-04-18 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I purchased the 2430 DL and it works perfectly. You really ought to
research a printer before you buy it.
This reminded me that I should report back on my printer experience.
I had asked about inkjet printers here and on the Thinkpad list and
based on several comments I got a Brother MFC 420 CN color printer,
copier and fax.
So far it prints over the wireless 80211b network from the Lombard G3
(OS 9.2) as well as over ethernet from the desktop that dare not speak
it's name (WinXP). The Thinkpad didn't have enough disk space for the
whole print/fax/scan software package but Brother was considerate enough
to provide a non-network print/scan driver for direct USB connection.
I haven't got the scanner or fax to work wirelessly on the Lombard
though I haven't tried real hard.
Facsimile shows up as an option in the Word98 print menu and the
scanner shows up as a twain device in Graphic Converter.
All in all I'm happy, the only downside seems to be the limited paper
tray capacity (120 pages). This doesn't bother me since I don't print
large amounts. Besides the printer is so small it sits on a corner of my
desk which makes adding paper easy.
