My iBooks (1.2 gig G4 and a 1.3 gig G4) both have 32 RAM for video, they don't do the 'ripple' effect. My other Macs--both with 64 video RAM DO support the rippling effect. Re: Tiger and video card
This is really a question for Ben and Tim. After your comments about your upgrades, have you seen much of a speed improvement on the G4 iBooks? The 15 Aluminium 1.25 GHz with 1 GB RAM has the same performances, the G4 14 iBook 933 MHz with 384 MB RAM is slightly slower. Really slightly, actually the same thing. I did not notice any speed improvement that some site describe (next week I will install Tiger on the G5 dual processor and let you know). I would say, in term of general feed back, menu response etc... we are still way behind the feeling of OS 9 on the early G3-G4 Macs! Ben -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... These big OS upgrades make me nervous. It's only a matter of time before the ATI video card in my Pismo will no longer be supported. Tiger supports it. . .for now. In my opinion, Apple needs to SLOW DOWN. They should have just stuck with Panther for a while, and focused their developing efforts to bring back the Newton, and concentrate on a G5 PowerBook / iBook. When it comes to software, I say what most people say about hardware that works. . .if it ain't broke, why fix it?! Anyway, no need to respond to this, I just wanted to thank everyone for their input. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who prefers to wait it out when major OS upgrades roll out yet again. I just hope someone at Apple reads this and agrees. Maybe Tiger will be the new OS for the next 2 or even 3 years. Apple could stretch it out. . . after all, they have to go from 10.4.0 all the way up to 10.4.9! Thanks again! Sounds like you would be much happier using Windows. Stupid Pismo Question
Hey gang. I am running a Pismo which is now five years old and it is really showing a lot of mileage. I have not been the kindest computer owner and the demands I have placed on my faithful machine are showing. I think it is time to retire the old girl and go with something new. The problem is I still really like the Pismo, and I have a lot of accessories for it--swappable drives, a ton of RAM, a big hard drive, etc. What I would really like to do, instead of buying a new PowerBook or iBook, is buy another Pismo. That way I can keep using all this stuff I've invested in over the years, and also stick with a familiar machine. So my question is, are there any Pismos still available for sale anywhere? Ideally I'd like a new machine that's just been sitting in somebody's warehouse all these years but I figure that's pretty much a pipe dream. So I guess I'm probably looking at used machines. The problem is I have no clue about buying a used computer--how do I make sure I'm not getting one that's just as beat up as the one I have? Anybody got any ideas? Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!
Hello kt: Excuse my smug tone in prior post. Forgot to mention that i ensured that the maintenance routines had run via macaroni, did a full permissions repair, Disk utility repair and a diskwarrior rebuild. Furthermore, no Norton products have ever been installed on my Pismo OSX. All of these preventive measures should have helped. Definitely contributed to me running out of gas and gambling on a straight update instead of fresh install. Either that or the painkillers i'm on for my back surgery last week...which also may have contributed to the smug tone. I really had geared up for a clean install - maybe even wiping the drive in order to get find by content/spotlight indexing to work properly. Will wait for my next drive upgrade. I wimped out, but am still surprised by the mostly positive outcome. Will also look for the Epson drivers mentioned by TurtleBear. Anyway, let's focus on the reports of Tiger issues, solutions and features. Should help everyone make or decide to make the transition. F. From: Karen Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello, I have finally had a successful install on my PowerBook 17 1GHz with 1 Gig of ram. I initially tried the update and when I rebooted everything was slower than molasses trying to go uphill. System Profiler and Safari would not even launch. I then did a reinstall, same problem. I then reinstalled OS 10.3.9 (not a good idea according to Apple) and still problems. Today I decided to bite the bullet and erase and install and now everything is fine. I had backed up all data and software so should not be a problem now. Live and Learn kt -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: DVD -R/+R in Pismo?
I had heard from a fairly good source that those at Apple chose to use DVD -R as the way to write to disk. I don't know if this has anything to do with the way the system reads the disk or not and I don't have a DVD/R drive to test. Don't quote me on this because it could be wrong. My 2 year old TiBook can not read DVD+R discs either. I suspect only fairly recent macs can read DVD+R. Luis Sequeira -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: filling out a form
I'm the guy who asked about over quota on email, and caught a little flack for asking the wrong kind of question. Sorry, but after a week of confusion it was you guys that helped. So I'm going to risk asking another questionable question. I thought I could fill out a form with my clamshell ibook much the same as I use too with a typewriter. (I'm working with mac os x 10.3.9) So I scanned the form; but I can't figure out how to fill it out. It's like trying to type over a picture. I've probably got over 40 hours into this now and it's not so much the specific form as it is learning how to do this type of task. I've even downloaded a trial version of bbedit 8.2. But I'm lost and it seems I've asked everybody and only gotten blank stares as a result. Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do? And if so could someone please tell me how? Sincerely, Dennis P.S. Thanks to everyone who helped with the over quota thing. You made it simple. I use a little shareware program for filling out forms that are in pdf format. It's called FormMate. For my limited needs it's worked great. It lets add as many text fields as needed, and insert pictures as well (like a digitized sigtnature, for instance). As some people have noted, it appears that Tiger brings the capability to do this. My copy of Tiger is, alas, still in the mail. I expect to get it tomorrow :-) Luis Sequeira -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... How to connect WS II (OS 9.2.2) wirelessly to dial-up using. . . ?
Hi, Friends, I'm hoping to connect my Wallstreet II 233 MHz running OS 9.2.2, to the internet via dialup (Earthlink) using a Belkin 802.11b Network Interface Card in one of the PCMCIA slots. It's called a Wireless Notebook Network Card, Model number F5D6020. To connect it to the phone line, I have a Lucent Technologies Orinoco Residential Gateway, Model RG-1000, which includes both a 56K, V.90, RJ-11 connector modem and a 10Base-T, RJ-45 Ethernet connection, as well as the original CD, Orinoco, The New Wavelan, put out by Lucent Technologies in 12/2000. This CD includes a Macintosh driver good from OS 7x to OS 9.0. It's designed for a G3 Powerbook, but may not work with OS 9.2.2. I'd like your recommendations for the best (hopefully free) drivers - and any other necessary software and/or control panels - which I should try to acquire and install for both the Card and the Gateway (base station) to enable me to use this setup. Also, do you know of a link to any instruction set which I can follow to set this up for myself? Not to complicate this request (although I realize it does), I'm hoping soon to upgrade to a larger Hard Drive and install OS 10.3.9, in addition to OS 9.2.2; and hope to be also able to use this hardware setup to go online when booted on OS X. So I'm hoping to also locate setup instructions and software/drivers which will work for me under the newer OS. I assume the drivers and software I need under dial-up will remain the same, except for a change of settings, if I switch over to a DSL service from either Earthlink or Verizon. Or, am I wrong? Thanks for your patience with this complicated request. I couldn't figure any way to make it simpler. . . All the best, stanton -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Stupid Pismo Question
If your guts are all solid, you might consider looking on eBay for a parts machine with good plastics. Suspect that a clean case, keyboard trackpad and screen are all you really need for like new state. Assume you have a solid battery. I needed a replacement screen at one point and it came with a top case that was in remarkably good condition. Have also got a lower case for trackpad and the power/sound cards. One thing I do recall is that some of the auctions seemed to be from questionable sources. Scan feedback for percentage AND content. If you are patient you may even come up with an acceptable *working* machine. Agree with you on the pismo. For everyday communicating and bread and butter use, I see no need for anything newer. F. Re: Buying a Pismo
Keith, I know where you are at; I was in this position about a year ago. You can buy on eBay reasonably safely - I did it from overseas even. Learn how to use it. The best feature of eBay is the seller feedback rating, which sellers are very concerned to keep as high as possible. You have ninety days after the purchase to leave feedback for the seller. Most sellers are very happy to please. Also you can get an idea of the current prices by doing an advanced search for completed items; that will let you know if its in your range. There are good Pismos going on eBay regularly. If you are not in a rush, you will find a near new unit. To get some extra life you might also like to upgrade to G4 550 MHz which costs ~ 300. Happy with my Daystar upgrade, even if the fan is running more often. Good luck. Here in rural dialup land using Earthlink, if we want to stay on for more than a minute at a time, we have to use the v.34 setting, so all our computers are set to that. However, I should note that even with the v.90 setting we don't get a message that there is no dial tone, so that is probably something else. Have you checked all the connections? What happens if you set the modem configuration to ignore the dial tone? Beverly Low End Mac column: http://www.lowendmac.com/woods/index.html -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I bought my Pismo off ebay, had a G4 500 upgrade and a gig of ram, 60 gig hd and an original manual, 2 batteries, both crap, and a great case for $600 has a couple of small cracks in the plastic and the pink tint on start up. I bought a bookendz docking station and an 8x internal superdrive and while not a screamer I am very satisfied. Kevin -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Re: Buying a Pismo
There are also plenty of used Mac dealers like Wegener media and others who often have near-mint older PowerBooks with a warranty, though you will pay a bit more than eBay. filling out a form
Thanks to everyone who's sent their suggestions and options. The first thing I tried was finding the ocr on my printer. Seems it does have that ability as someone suggested. And even with text edit I've been able to transform the scanned form to...I don't know how to say it. It comes out with all the words and stuff, but it's all in one paragraph like. The format of the form gets lost somehow. No spaces or sections where the information is to be input. All the words and numbers are there, but they somehow get compressed. I don't have the programs some of you have mentioned, and maybe that's the only way I'll be able to do this. But I'm still trying. Just hate spending money I don't have too. Thanks again. OS X upgrade for Lombard
Now that Tiger is out I'm about ready to upgrade my Lombard to Panther. Does it matter which version of 10.3 I get? Is Panther available on CDs or is it DVD only? (the Lombard has a DVD drive but I might want to try upgrading my Mom's Wallstreet which only has a CD) Doe the Panther CD's include OS 9 classic or should I hang onto my OS 9 CD? -- Andrew in Ann Arbor -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Lombard hardware questions, loose screen and noisy power supply
I'm contemplating doing something about the blown L2 cache on my Lombard 400. I might go for the G4 upgrade and Panther but there are a few mechanical concerns I'd like to resolve before I put any more money into this machine. The screen has about 15 mm free play when it's in the up position. With the 520 series this was a symptom of failing hinge attachements. Should I worry about the Lombards hinges? Has anyone else noticed this looseness in their Lombard? something on the right hand side is making a high pitched whistle when the machine is asleep. The pitch of the whistle changes when I unplug the charger but not when I remove the battery. Is this the sound of a power management board failing? Interestingly enough the noise went away for a bit about the time the black brick charger failed. I took the charger apart and found that one of the solder connections holding the power cord socket to the board had loosened enough to burn (scorch marks and soot). Possibly repairable presuming nothing else was fried. I had a spare charger so I didn't bother. Thanks -- Andrew in Ann Arbor -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
