Re - My battery doesn't seem to calibrate
-- Date: Sat, 7 May 2005 18:37:42 -0500 From: Frank Cornew [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?! [snipped[ My newer tech 6600 mAH battery doesn't seem to calibrate. Time remaining for full discharge/charge never gets calculated in menu bar display - yet. Pecentage, yes. Am cycling, have reset PMU, nvram, etc. Think there is a hard core calibration tactic via terminal that I may yet try. --- Some info I've collected re batteries ... --- Battery Life Thanks to MacInTouch, I've followed battery care pretty closely. Apple states that you need to exercise the battery monthly (full discharge with immediate recharge), and from [this report] and, BatteryUniversity: How to prolong lithium-based batteries http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm describe battery care for all Lithium uses. Points I got from all of them: 1. Exercise the battery monthly. They stagnate if not used regularly. Battery University states the exercise is needed after every 30 charges (cycles). Apple is likely trying to simplify so I go with the 30 (partial) cycles as I don't use it as frequently. 2. If not to be used in the near future, discharge it to 40 - 66% and store in refrigerator (NOT FREEZER; keep above 0°C/32°F). I keep my extra battery there and warm it then charge it for flights. 3. Avoid leaving it plugged into the charger for prolonged periods such as sitting at a desk for weeks. Though I believe it's the least problematic, LiOn batteries don't like being at a fully charged state for long periods either. It's best to use them or they will crystallize and lose life. As I use my desktop the most, my two batteries have lasted 3 years and still have lots of life. The first still makes it through a movie on my iBook G3/2001 with some juice to spare. The extra battery seems like it's new. -- I do believe Mr. G's stay charged or die mantra has some virtue, but keeping a battery permanently installed/charging on the AC power adapter for very extensive periods is quite contrary to advice stated in one manufacturer's (www.batterytech.com) FAQ: Always fully charge your battery when not in use or when being stored for extended periods of time. Check on this battery every 3-4 weeks. If total self-discharge occurs, the notebook may not recognize the battery. To increase the life of the battery, it is best to remove it from the computer, if the computer will be plugged in for long periods of time. If the battery remains in the computer, it will constantly be charging which reduces its life cycle. It may also overheat the battery, which will cause the battery cells to slowly deteriorate over time. -- XBattery http://www.kezer.net/xbattery.html XBattery is a battery monitoring utility for Mac OS X. It provides a user-customizable dock icon that shows your current battery level and charging status. It also provides a variety of graphs detailing battery information, and a user-customizable display XBattery is currently available as a pre-release download. It goes far beyond the basic charge level information reported by the system and tells you your battery's capacity, voltage, and overall health report. In addition, it will provide a running graph showing trends in your battery's performance. What useful information does it provide? iBatt will almost certainly tell you things about your PowerBook's battery that you never knew. All batteries degrade over time, and OS X has no built-in way of showing you just how worn out your battery is. But your PowerBook knows, and iBatt knows how to get that information out. Have you ever wondered if your PowerBook falls short of others in terms of battery performance? iBatt is not just a standalone application, but an Internet-based statistical tool. It reports how your battery measures up against other PowerBooks of your model, and gives you the option to submit your own battery statistics to iBatt's Internet database. How much does it cost? iBatt costs $15. You can download it free for evaluation purposes. The demo version will quit after 10 minutes of use, and it will not allow you to view battery statistics on any PowerBook model other than your own. After Tiger... Cannot Print
I did a clean install of Tiger last week and had no problems. Documents printed from Word to both printers (one at the office and the other at home) without a problem. Last night, I needed to print a document with very narrow margins on my home printer. I set the margins in Word and tried to print. The document was chopped off just as Word had predicted. Running the same version of Word in 10.2.8 and using the same printer, I could print with the narrower margin settings. I downloaded and installed the HP driver. I restarted the computer after installation of the HP driver. I opened the document in Word and selected File-Print. Word then crashed. I repeated the process but attempted open-Apple and P. Word crashed. I repeated the process and clicked the printer button on the tool bar. Only the final page printed. I shut the computer down, then took out the battery for about 30 seconds; put the battery back in and restarted the computer. I opened Word tried to print from File-Print. Word crashed. I opened the document in AppleWorks; went to File-Print. AppleWorks crashed. Because I need the document this morning, I e-mailed the document to my Wintel machine, which printed the document with the smaller margins in Word to the same printer as the Apple. Any ideas or resultions as to why I can no longer print to Word or Apple Works? -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... These big OS upgrades make me nervous. It's only a matter of time before the ATI video card in my Pismo will no longer be supported. Tiger supports it. . .for now. Its probably a loose or defective ram chip. Open her up again and try to reseat the ram chip or chips. Try it one more time. Don't install 10.3.5-10.3.7 without updating to 10.3.8 if you are using a dialup Internet connection. As I have heard of no problems with 10.3.8 or 10.3.9, and as they include a number of security patches, you should update anyway. Yes, the downloading can be a pain if you don't have access to a high speed connection (I go to the Apple Store). Versions 10.3.5-10.3.7 had a modem bug that would cause delays in getting dial tone and eventual kernel panic, which necessitated a restart. After restart, the modem worked well maybe six times before the delays would start. This got me. My cds had 10.3.5 on them. I got them just around the time 10.3.7 came out. It was a frustrating 1st month or so until 10.3.8 came out and fixed the modem issue. It would dial normally around 5x, then take multiple attempts, then around the 12-15th time it would kernel panic. Wireless Network Problems.
Hello All, Since upgrading OS X 10.4 I have to start with the network recogntion problem at start-up which has been reported earlier by other listers. Manual connection works but is irksome. Hardware I use is: ADSL with Airport Extreme to which a Canon i550 printer and a LAN cable network is connected for my wife's desktop iMac. I'm wireless with my 17 ALPB. The new problem is that after connecting to the network/internet I get signal strength 15 blue bars but after leaving my PB for 2 - 3 hours idle the connection with the network is lost or only a weak signal strength 3 - 4 bars are shown, This never happened with 10.3.9. What can be the reason and more important how can this be avoided. TIA, greetings, Andre. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Your typical electric utility draws its line current out of the big generators with a pair of coil taps located near the top of the dynamo. When the normal tap brushes get dirty, they take them off line to clean them up, and use special auxiliary taps on the bottom of the coil. Now, this is a problem, because when they do that they get not ordinary or `thin' electrons, but the fat'n'sloppy electrons that are heavier and so settle to the bottom of the generator. These flow down ordinary wires just fine, but when they have to turn a sharp corner (as in an integrated-circuit via), they're apt to get stuck. Re: Wireless Network Problems.
Same with AP here. I have a AL BP 800 FW that I upgraded to Tiger. Was running Panther 10.3.9 and now I get sporadic bars in the menu bar for reception. I can't tell if the reception is actually less or just the indicator is messed up. I am also using an Express as a remote base station upstairs with the AP base station in the basement. I worked on the Express and base station settings and changed the channel to 11 on both. Does not seem to help or hurt. I will be looking for Apple to come out with 10.4.1 soon. Re: G5 Powerbooks
For the record, and as I have said before, (sorry for repetition) if anybody can cool a G5 Powerbook I can. My cooler design performs over 2.5 times better than a conventional cooler of the same size. My desktop cooler cools better than water. Non exotic, direct to air. But Apple will not sign my NDA (it's MY invention) and tell me 'we are already working on something else' - before they receive disclosure! How do they know what 'something else' is if they haven't seen what I have? The patent system is virtually completely ineffective at protecting rights of individual inventors. Battery life under Tiger
Nope. Nonetheless, the time remaining for battery life and time to full charge seems to be on the blink in my Pismo with a high-capacity (6600 mAH) Newer Tech battery. Battery life is fine, but it never manages to calculate the time remaining. I've cycled it several times and it has yet to calibrate. Maybe this is related to your issue? This battery has been treated VERY well and is reasonably new. The cycle time reporting issue is definitely a cause of the Tiger upgrade. My original Apple batteries lasted well in excess of what was considered to be normal usable service lives. F.
