Re: Corrupt NVRAM?

2005-06-14 Thread Graham Welland
I would fully expect that your battery is beyond rejuvenation if it's been
used full time as a desktop. In general I recommend to folks to remove the
battery from the machine if it's likely to be used in this way as it kills
batteries in my experience. A new/spare battery needn't be that expensive or
hard to find.

It would probably be well worth resetting your NVRAM anyway - you've got
nothing to lose so long as you are on power.

that way but ever since I installed Tiger, I can't restart or shut
down without forcing those functions. I unplugged the charger to see
how long the battery would go for... the battery shows 98% to 100%
charge all the time... but when I unplug the charger I get about 7
minutes of battery time and then it reads 0. I'm wondering if these 2
symptoms indicate corrupted NVRAM. The fact that it no longer
completes a shutdown is what makes me think so. The battery may still
have some ability to recharge if I reset the PMU. Anyone have any
thoughts on this? Thanks for your thoughts.

If the printer driver is some kind of network kernel extension, then the
version for 10.3 won't work with 10.4 because Apple made some changes to th=
e
network kernel API and drivers have to be modified to work properly under
10.4. I'm not saying that this is the problem, but it could be and, in this
case, there isn't much you can do except complaining to HP...

-Laurent.

While I strongly agree that HP's drivers for Mac OS X are poorly
written and don't play well (or at all) with multiple users (i.e.
fast user switching), I have been able to use my all-in-one under
Tiger, using the very same drivers that I had in Panther.

I would suggest you remove and reinstall the HP driver and see if it
makes a difference.

On an aside: Apparently Paul Allen does have a stake in Charter. Eh.

Still, business lines are expensive so I won't be able to run any

had no need or desire to know. For example: A thunderstorm 25 miles
away can cause a surge in the phone lines which every phone in the
county will survive but will kill a $300 modem that the insurance
company won't pay for. (This was 83-84.) Another thing I learned the
hard way (and amazingly enough even today too many people are unaware

frequently.

I too live very rurally in NW Indiana, and built this house at the edge
of a field where the land mostly huge acreage of soybeans or corn, except
for this subdivision which is a sand hill left by theglaciers which followed
THE FLOOD. The soil is composed of sand and oak leaves and has a water
table which is only about 2 feet down. I think it is an electrical
conductor of the most natural kind, its a wonder the moles don't all have
curly hair!

I blew 3 modems for our dial up service the first summer we moved in until
I found THE surge protector for the phone.

Now with the totally worthless linksys router, which like I mentioned is
being recalled and was mistakenly marketed for the US...I have explored
$everal kind$ of fre$h $urge protector$ andhave had to try again 5 times
as they keep $ending the$ame equipment at $print$ ex$pen$e!!!

I have also contacted the Sprint field office to ask them to find check
the grounding of the phone line and use ...something better.

Isn't it insanity to keep trying something that doesn't work?

I now await their new 2.0 versionof equipment. If I had a choice in DSL
service I would take it. Cable TV isn't even offered. I was thrilled to get
DSL, as homeschoolers we use technology for online classes, and library

There are things you can do to reduce lightning damage odds dramatically.

You need a good arrester (protector) with 3-wire gas tubes and/or
'delta modules' at the service entrance. You MUST have a good ground.
(Deity Help You if you are on a granite mountain...). You protect the
power as well as the phone line WITH THE SAME GROUND POINT.

And you install things correctly. Most telco's fall down in that area...

FWIW my Dell came with only one small Designed for Windows 2000
sticker on it. Some of the others are loaded down with them, I know,
but Dell has much more restraint.

The Text Encoding setting in your email program needs to be changed.

Re: windows characters (can't post to list)

2005-06-14 Thread sacear3
I sent a reply last week (yesterday as well) suggesting a solution. I
will paste it again at the end of this post*. Did you try that? I am
curious if my suggestion is not working?

You both can obviously post to the list, so the content of some of your
post messages must be in a format that is not accepted by the list,
such as Rich Text. I know the list does not accept Rich Text, and I
think the list accepts Plain Text only. You need to make your messages'
format conform to the list format in order to post.

This is what I posted yesterday:

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So, the steps, using Mail.app, are this:
1) Set Text Encoding to Default from the Message menu.
2) Prior to sending your email message, select Make Plain Text from
the Format menu (you may need to Select All first).

Two more things that I just thought of...

1) If you have an email signature, that is in some format other than
Plain Text, then your message will not be accepted by the list. The
list accepts Plain Text only. Your rejected messages have been in a
format other than Plain Text.

2) You must send messages from the same email address that you
registered with when you joined the list.

Hope that also helps.

It depends. If they're listed as AAC files, then you can convert them
in iTunes by selecting Advanced Convert to...

The format you can convert to is determined by the default, set in
preferences in the Importing section. By default iTunes imports in
AAC (aka MP4), if you change that to MP3, you then can convert to
MP3's via the menu.

If they're listed as Protected AAC, then your only choice is to burn
them to a CD, and import back from the CD, which gives you
unprotected files, albeit with a generational copy's worth of
degradation.

Re: New iBook

2005-06-14 Thread tharbad
First thing, charge it completely, and then use it completely once. Charge it
completely again.

Regular usage should never cause the system to go to sleep forcefully, as this
behavior will cause a sudden, rapid drain in the battery when it approaches
end-of-life (as all cells will die roughly the same time, and you get to see
your batt go from holding 4-5 hours, to holding 30 minutes in about 2 weeks).

However, the exception to this rule is to use it to this point once every month
or two, as this will keep it calibrated and in working order as well.

Re: Corrupt NVRAM?

2005-06-14 Thread sacear3

Dan,

I concur with Graham. Sounds like your battery has served its life and
is ready for retirement and recycling. Also sounds like you ought to
reset the NVRAM and the PMU.

Something I have heard, often actually, is that when you are using your
notebook computer as a desktop, then take the battery out and store it
in the refrigerator. I have never done that, yet I know that the cooler
one keeps the battery, then the longer it will last per charge and the
longer life it will have. So storing batteries in a cool place makes
sense. I would seal it in an air tight zip-lock bag with a desiccant
pouch to keep it clean and to keep moisture away. Does anyone have any
experience putting the battery in the 'fridge while not in use? If so,
what were the results?

Best regards,
Scott

I would fully expect that your battery is beyond rejuvenation if it's
been
used full time as a desktop. In general I recommend to folks to remove
the
battery from the machine if it's likely to be used in this way as it
kills
batteries in my experience. A new/spare battery needn't be that
expensive or

hard to find.

It would probably be well worth resetting your NVRAM anyway - you've
got

nothing to lose so long as you are on power.

that way but ever since I installed Tiger, I can't restart or shut
down without forcing those functions. I unplugged the charger to see
how long the battery would go for... the battery shows 98% to 100%
charge all the time... but when I unplug the charger I get about 7
minutes of battery time and then it reads 0. I'm wondering if these 2
symptoms indicate corrupted NVRAM. The fact that it no longer
completes a shutdown is what makes me think so. The battery may still
have some ability to recharge if I reset the PMU. Anyone have any
thoughts on this? Thanks for your thoughts.

Actually, Kristina. . .you could sell your sticker on eBay. Believe it
or not, they are worth money. I had the original package that came
with my PowerMac 9500, which I purchased new in 1995. We won't go into
how much I paid for the thing. . .AHHH! Anyway, I recently sold the
package of stickers on eBay for . . .are you sitting down? $68.00!!
For stickers!! whew!

Check the processor daughterboard and the memory. After a while, vibrations
can loosen up the connection between the daughterboard and the motherboard.
No fatherboard or sonboard involved...

dinosaur n.: 1. Any hardware requiring raised flooring and special power.
Used especially of old minis and mainframes, in contrast with newer
microprocessor-based machines. In a famous quote from the 1988 Unix EXPO,
Bill Joy compared the liquid-cooled mainframe in the massive IBM display
with a grazing dinosaur with a truck outside pumping its bodily fluids
through it. IBM was not amused. Compare big iron; see also mainframe. 2.
[IBM] A very conservative user; a zipperhead.

Synchronizing Treo 650

2005-06-14 Thread Harry Corsover
I just ordered a Treo 650 as an upgrade to my Kyocera 7135 smart
phone (which will be for sale, if anyone is interested).

I couldn't get many details from Verizon Wireless about how this
phone syncs with Macs. I've been using Palm Desktop (I've never used
iCal) to sync via USB, but the Treo has Bluetooth as well as a
version of Palm OS.

Has anyone been using a Treo 600 or 650 and syncing it with a Mac?
I'd appreciate hearing about your experience.

Thanks!

Regards,

Harry Corsover

I've been using MissingSync from MarkSpace and have been quite happy
with it.
