Transfer to new Powerbook and more
Hello list, I have just received a new 15² PowerBook and am wondering how to best transfer the contents of my iBook G3 to the new laptop. The iBook is currently running OS 10.3.9. I will then need to transfer my wife¹s system from a firewire drive to the iBook. Her system is at OS 10.2.8. If at all possible I would also like to update the iBook to Tiger with the install disks from the new PowerBook. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Best I could do was boot in OS9 on the PPC and print. . Has anyone had success in using the method described at: http://www.applelinks.com/articles/2003/03/20030324122613.shtml and quoted below (the section I am referring to occurs about 3/4 of the way down the page). I have been able to install the serial backdoor and a printer that is recognized by Jaguar but when I attempt to print, I just get gobbledygook. I was so hopeful when I first heard the printer fire up. :-( Andre *** Re: Peter J Pederson's question about printing to his Epson Stylus Color 600 via a serial port in Jaguar. I can't stress enough how I'm flying by the seat of my pants in this area, but here's what he needs to do, as I understand it: 1. Download and install Gimp-print and ESP GhostScript from here: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3 Gimp-print is an ongoing project to provide drivers for hundreds of unsupported printers (Peter's printer is one of them); ESPGS has something to do with PostScript interpretation, and apparently is essential. 2. Now the slightly tricky part. A kind soul has made the pre-compiled serial support for CUPS available for download here:http://homepage.mac.com/laurentvonallmen/FileSharing3.html. (Without this, you would have to download the source code for CUPS, compile it in gcc in Developer Tools, etc, so it's a HUGE help ). Download the CSW2400.tar.gz-link.gz file, which is actually a complete kit for getting a Stylewriter 2400 to work. Peter can ignore most everything in that folder except the serial file, which needs to be moved into this OS X directory: usr/libexec/cups/backend. I'm sure you have to be logged in as root to do this, unless you know how to do it in Terminal. The directions in the CSW2400 package probably have some useful info about this. 3. Once this file is where it belongs, restart the computer and open any web browser. Type in this URL: localhost:631 This opens the Web interface to CUPS, and it's just a matter of following the steps, starting with Add a Printer to choose the printer and the right port. Once done, the printer SHOULD appear in Print Center. *** -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Wallstreet HD upgrade question
I just replaced the original 4 GB drive in my wife's 266 Wallstreet with a 20 GB drive. I had partitioned the drive into 2 partitions with a 8 GB first partition in anticipation of installing Jaguar. I had backed up her original hard drive with OS 9.2.2 with a simple system copy to an external firewire drive and copied it to the second partition after doing a clean install of 9.2.2 into the first partition to be able to access the firewire drive but her system on the second partition won't boot up. It crashes at the startup screen. Do all bootable systems have to be in the first 8 GB or am I having other problems? The system will boot if extensions are disabled so I am suspecting I have somehow picked up an extension conflict or incompatibility. My wife would appreciate a prompt resolution to the problem. :-) Thanks, Andre -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: OSX on Wallstreet.
I recently went through this problem with a hard drive and went to my local hobby shop with a kitchen magnet and a paper clip. The metal that I found to be the most effective magnetic shield was tin. Brass has been recommended on a site but it did not work for me and the magnet was able to easily hold the paperclip through the brass. In doing some research into finding a good magnetic shield if found that the magnetic field cannot be blocked per se but needs to be diverted. The tin I found worked in this way. Although the magnet would actually grab and hold onto the tin it was not able to grab the paperclip through the tin. I found that to be an interesting tidbit. The force that it requires is probably due to the nature of the PCMCIA card cage and the springs that push the card out when you eject it from the system or by pressing one of the little button. As has been documented before, the design of the ejection mechanism in the Wallstreet was problematic. I had to replace the card cage 3 times when I had a Wallstreet. Apple changed the design completely with the Lombard and later, the Pismo, for a push lever. No springs anymore that put constantly that pressure on the card, so the laptop can eject it. I would suggest that you whether keep the card all the time, or you just use it when you need it... Thanks. That is good to know. Andre -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... What had me wondering was the buzzing and clicking sound coming from the speakers when I press the power button. I figured if the hard drive was bad it would somehow act differently than this. Go figure... Andre -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Wallstreet hardrive replacement?
I have just successfully replaced the PRAM battery on my Wallstreet and wanted to upgrade the 4 gig hard drive to a 20 gig drive. When I installed the 29 gig drive and pressed the power button I heard a clicking and buzzing sound from the speakers. I put the 4 gig back in and all worked well. When I tried the 20 gig I got the same sound again. The powerbook does not start up or do anything with the 20 gig drive installed. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. email problem
I have suddenly developed a strange email problem. I can no longer send email larger than 2kb from my main email account. This happens in both Entourage and Mail (I am running Jaguar). The strange thing is that if I try sending a larger email from my iBook 800 using my wife's mac.com email account the mail goes out fine. I have contacted my ISP and they can't find any problems. I have a DSL account shared via a Netgear Wireless router. I am connecting the iBook to the router via Airport. This problem appeared from one day to the next. I must have done something to cause this problem but I can't figure out what . Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't have much more hair left to pull out. :-) Thanks, André -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Networking help
I just switched from a dial-up connection to ADSL and love it, however, now my Wallstreet and iBook don't seem to be able to see each other. BEFORE: I used a crossover ethernet cable to directly connect the Wallstreet and iBook and shared the dial-up connection through the Wallstreet via IPNetRouter. Wallstreet running OS 9.2.2 and the iBook running Jaguar. The computers could recognize each other. AFTER: ADSL modem, Wallstreet, and iBook connected to NetGear Wireless router. Wallstreet and iBook can share the broadband connection but do not recognize each other as being on the same network. Same OS configuration. I am a networking newbie and am not familiar with all the ins and outs of what settings should be set to whatever. Is there a good web site describing what I need to do? You can access that file is you right or control click an application, then select 'Show Content'. Then, open the 'Content' directory. In those XML formatted files, there is usually an entry key named 'CFBundleDocumentTypes' which is an array of dictionaries, each providing information about the various file types that the application supports. So, if you could find one application supporting that document type, you could be able to add this information to the OmniPage application package so that I think that the system would show it in the 'Recommended Applications'. Note that I haven't tried any of this. I'm just providing my developer knowledge about file type mapping... -Laurent. Thanks, Laurent. I was hoping for a simpler answer. :-) When this headache goes away, I'll read your instructions again and decide if it is actually as complicated as it seems in my present state. If it looks possible for my non-developer self, I'll give it a try. It might be easier to get OmniPage to update their program. From that dialog one of the options is open with. Use that dialog to select omnipage as the application and then check the box that says change all to make that the default for all .tiff files from that time forward. That is how it is supposed to work. Try it and see if that's what you want. JimS. I've done this over and over.
