Re: Partitioning and formatting
I was trying to do this the other night for a friend who has a LaCie drive. We were using the version of LaCie software from Versiontracker. Is this different than the stuff on the cd? It wouldn't let us format for both his XP machine and his Powerbook? Has anybody successfully partitioned a LaCie (using Lacie's software) for both a Windows Mac box? I was getting ready to call LaCie about this exact issue on Monday. Bryan F. Response: Two questions (sort of OT)
Brian: I have a jumpdrive (unprotected) ... very handy, convenient ... my OS X PowerBook always mounts it, sometimes XP is iffy about whether it sees it or not (strange). I will be buying a new jump drive soon, so I thought this: I can make my iBook next to unusable to anyone who decides to try to walk off with it, can i do the same with a USB jump drive? External Firewire HD issue ...
Hi: I have an external Firewire HD that I'm currently using as a backup disk for the HD on my Titanium Powerbook. I purchased it from Piranha Technology (http://www.pirahnatechnology.com/index.asp) over a year ago and it seems to work fine (after I sent a previous one back to them and they swapped it out for me for a newer one). However, this is my delimma. I want to update to Panther from Jaguar, but I want to backup my Titanium HD before updating to Panther (I use Synchronize Pro X as my BU software ... with the backup being a bootable image). However, I want to update my external Firewire Drive from Piranha before doing so. I have attempted to get a hold of Piranha, but their tech support email was bounced back to me ... I cannot get a hold of them via the phone. What I want is to know what patch has to be applied to the drive I have from them (a list of those found here ... http://www.apple.com/macosx/firewire800specialmessage.html). Is there a way I can determine which flavor of Oxford my drive is so I can apply the update? Also, when trying to get a hold of Piranha, I eventually turned to the Better Business Bureau in their area. The BBB told me they have a history of not returning phone calls, emails going unanswered, merchandise sent that is faulty, etc., etc. I told the BBB that Pirahna is using the BBB logo on their website and that really caught her interest. I would not do any business with them ... I thought I was saving some bucks, now it's coming back to haunt me. Any ideas there ... or can I just upgrade to Panther 10.3.1 and not worry about the Firewire glitch with the external drive? A 2nd item ... I want to move all my stuff from my current Tibook to a new Superdrive Tibook. My wife is getting my current one that only has a combo-drive. Can I just image my HD over to the new Superdrive one? Is there a better way of doing that ... I'm afraid I'll lose items on the new Superdrive book that aren't on the combo drive book. I've never done a target FW hookup, I know it's not difficult ... I just want to make sure I'm not overwriting anything that I'd miss later on. I've also been holding off buying a Family Pack of Panther until the CD's are burned with the 10.3.1 (and have the .1 update). Is there any logic to that or should I just go ahead and get it. I have a broadband connection, so downloading or burning a CD of the update is not an issue. I'd just like to have the most current copy of the OS ... according to the rumour sites, yet another release (.2) is about ready to come out that solves even a few more items. Problem getting online using 10.2.4

Now, I am able to enter in the IP address (manually), but have no way of inputting the Router # (it now claims it provided by the PPP Server). This message (provided by the PPP Server) - I've never seen before. Can anyone clue me what to change to get back online. I did update to 10.2.4 around that time, but was online several days after updating to 10.2.4 before leaving for break. So I don't think updating to 10.2.4 broke my connection ... Wireless printing problem ...
Hi: Hoping someone has been down this route ... I have the following hardware setup ... Titanium 667 Powerbook running OS 10.2.3 Asante FriendlyNET AeroLAN PDMCIA Card - AL1011 Asante FriendlyNET Wireless Rounter - FR3202AL-1PCM I can printer when hooked up via ethernet to an Apple Laser Select 360, but when I try wireless it won't go through. The error messages I get are that printer isn't responding or that appletalk isn't active. I've worked with both Apple and Asante in the past and they did a pretty good job of pointing the finger at each other. However, after waiting several months I called Apple back and a rep. was very friendly and helpful in troubleshooting what might be going on. After going through a number of troubleshooting procedures we believe we are on to something. He thinks that these two ports aren't open (or at least one of them isn't open). Port# 548 and port# 427. He thinks that the Appletalk signal is being sent out to the printer, but the powerbook isn't being replied to by the printer because of a blocked port. Has anybody went through the process of unblocking a port or at least checking to see if one or the other is closed? Although I was real comfortable with tinkering around OS 9, some of the OS X stuff has me at a loss ... would appreciate assistance from anyone familiar with this. Happy Holidays! Anybody using MacMame .60a successfully on a TiBook

Solutions to Applications reinstall on Tibook ...
Original Post ... Hi: In an attempt to get OS X to see my Laserwriter Select 360, I zero'd out my HD, partitioned it into 5 gig for OS9 25 for OS X and have reloaded the OS's. Unfortunately, when I go to the print center it still tells me Appletalk isn't active and won't find my printer. However, another problem has come up. Since I reloaded the OS's directly and didn't use the software reinstall CD's, now I've lost Snapz Pro and Faxstf that was included with the factory install on the HD. Does anybody know how I can dig in and access these items to install from the reinstall CD's? Thanks Solutions: #1 - I had an Applications CD enclosed with the set of CD's I rec'd with the Tibook. I didn't even notice it until later on ... yes, I'm a dunce. #2 - Had some ongoing conversation with Tony Jayms (thanks Tony) and we compared notes on what we had both rec'd with our Tibooks (he indicated he didn't get an Apps CD). #3 - Had some suggestions about using (Tomeviewer on sys OS 9, and Pacifist for view .pkg files on OS X). The author of Pacifist Charles Srstka gave me a considerable amount of help in answering questions about what I was attempting to do ... I can't really vouch for his software package, but as far as him responding to questions ... he was great. I would assume that his software is equally as good as his email skills. It is a $20.00 shareware cost for a package that may really help save the day if you want to do a specific install. What I did was install Snapz Pro from the Apps CD and upgraded to the full version from Ambrosia software for $19.00 through their special Apple bundled upgrade price. Even though I reinstalled OS 9 and OS X on separate partitions and have run all updaters, I still am back to my original problem of not being able to print wirelessly through an OS X 10.1.5/Asante Aerolan setup to a LaserWriter Select 360. It tells me Appletalk is enable in my network prefs, but when I go to find the printer in print center, it tells me Appletalk isn't active. Hopefully, Jaguar will take care of this ... Update on printing wirelessly to LaserSelect 360 using Asante Products ...
Partial Update/partially solved ... in short the original post was that I couldn't find my Laserwriter Select 360 over an Ethernet setup using OS 10.1.4 on a Titanium 667 Powerbook. Never was able to get this to work wirelessly or even wired via ethernet (under OS X 10.1.5) ... Appletalk is selected and appears to be running, but when I try to select my printer it always gives me a message that Appletalk isn't active. I worked with Apple for quite a while on this ... updating to 10.1.5 and running various other software updaters as well. Also, worked with the support people at Asante (Al is great there) updating the firmware on the router ... this really had us going for a while as my internet provider disconnected my account (Mediacom) and when we finally determined that I was connecting and then getting cut off after just a few seconds, Al said you'd better talk to your cable internet provider. They couldn't answer why I was cut off as I have only been with them 3 weeks and haven't even received my fist bill. I think when I was connected originally, everything was set up to work, but not all i's t's were taken care of so they booted me off. Wireless connection is working fine under OS X, but can't print wirelessly. In the end Apple stated that I should nuke and reinstall ... which I'm not wanting to do at this time. I was successful in getting to print via ethernet under 9.2.2 so that will have to work for now. I'm in hopes that Jaguar OS X 10.2 will take care of this Appletalk problem. If anyone else has suggestions to solve this without re-installing OS X, I'm game ... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Trying to run older Mac programs on a Pismo 9.2.2 ...
Hoping someone can offer some hints on how to get two programs to run on a Pismo running 9.2.2. Time Out is a basketball CD with all kinds of plays on it. It will only go so far running on 9.2.2 (it mounts ok) but somewhere along the line it stops when you want to print out any of the information. According to one website http://search.megaspider.com/TopSearch.html$FS?%22Intouchinteractive.com%22, it is supposed ro run on a Mac that is system 7 or higher. The seller of the CD has been hot cold about helping. They are not programmers or developers of the CD so they can't really help all that much. Is there some way I can get my Pismo to emulate an earlier version of Mac OS, so I can view and print from this CD. I'm almost 100% sure that there has been no update to the CD for later Mac OS's. As an alternative, I can run it successfully on Win 98, so the information is still obtainable from the CD, I'm just trying to limit the number of machines I need to access to us it. The intouchinteractive website (developers of the CD) is inactive. The other program (more important as I would like to use it in the classroom) is called Capitalism. I have an older Mac version of it (Mac only) although they do have one that runs on MS Dos 5.0 and maybe Win 3.1/Win 95? It also mounts and goes to a certain point in the program then locks up. I would really like to use this in the classroom using a projector so we can do a business simulation in an Intro. to Business high school class. I finally have tracked down the current company behind the program (Enlight Software @ http://www.enlight.com in Hong Kong. I have emailed them and am awaiting a response from their support people. I imagine I won't get very far as they don't list anything on their website about Mac support (however, they do have a graphic of Capitalism in a Mac labeled box). There aren't any downloads for updates or newer versions, so I'm anticipating a stonewall there. I'm not even sure of what version of Mac OS, it was supposed to run on. The documentation that came with the box and on the website is very limited. There is a Capitalism Plus listed on some gamer retailing sites, but nothing is indicated if it is Mac compatible, I get a sneaky feeling it isn't. Would love to find workable Mac solutions for both of the above ... let me know if you have a brainstorm or have already been down this road.
