Re: 17" advice

2004-06-26 Thread Byron Gardner
I shopped and felt the 17" was nice but just too big. The 12" is really
handy to cart around and very light. I settled on the in-between and got the
15". I bought one and had to add the Airport Extreme and more memory. Now
the darn Extreme card comes standard. And the new 15" PBs are faster. Mine I
have now became obsolete two months after I bought it.

Re: Free Wi-Fi HotSpots

2004-06-26 Thread Byron Gardner
Most use T-Mobile. You can sign up for a pay as you go service which is .10
per minute with a minimum of 60 minutes or you can pay monthly or annually.
Kinkos, Starbucks, many airports and parking facilities are using this
service so your one time registering works everywhere.

I do not work for T-Mobile. I have used the service on a pay as you go.

Thanks,

Re: Long life battery for wallstreet?

2004-06-26 Thread Byron Gardner
Good luck and if they succeed, tell us all. I have owned a WS for many
years and there just is no way to get that kind of life from a standard
module bay battery. An external battery may give you 6-8 hours. They are
big, heavy and expensive.

Re: LCD Screen on new iBook

2003-10-23 Thread Byron Gardner
I just recently bought a new Aluminum PowerBook G4. This is the most recent
model with 1 GHz speed. The screen is 15" with a combo drive. I looked at
both the iBook and PB screens and can tell there is a significant
difference. So is the price. Let's face it, you have to pay for quality.

The thing that concerns me is the "thiness" of the screen. It is very thin
and flexible. I am worried that this flexibility can cause the screen to
bend and crack. With all the discussion about the "white spots" I have to
say that this PB does not seem as "portable". I was using a PB Wallstreet
and it was seemingly more rugged. I was not that too concerned about the
give in the plastic case. I am with the new Aluminum PB. The rest of the PB
is fantastic. The keyboard is fantastic and large. Good feel and responsive.
The screen is bright and clear. It is so much better than a WallStreet. The
speed is "wow". This PB definitely has a large awe factor.

I am curious if anyone could pass on what they are using to transport and
store their Al PB in as they travel.

Thanks,
Byron

Nope. Test it yourself. Take a paperclip and put it about 2-3 inches up
along side the screen on the right. The magnet will grab it and hold it.

Re: Dead Wallstreet

2003-09-12 Thread Byron Gardner
Mine does this too. I remove whatever module is in the right bay, leave a
battery in the left bay and then press the startup button. It boots as
normal and then I re-insert the right bay module back in and it works fine.
Beats me but it works.

Even weirder, it doesn't matter what is in the right bay: battery, floppy
drive, CD ROM, DVDROM, Zip...whatever. Same behavior.

Good luck,
Byron

Laurence, I have two WallStreet. The 14" screen WS has two 256 MB
modules-low profile. The Mac sees both for a total of 512 MB. The other has
a 256 on top and 128 on bottom. 384 total. Runs good and no problems.

Both Macs have Sonnet upgrades but they worked well before the upgrades.

I recommend loading up with as much as you can afford. Especially if you are
running OS X.

PLEASE HELP!

2003-06-29 Thread Byron Gardner
All right, Jay here's one for you to ponder. I am trying to install OS X
10.2 on my WallStreet. The installation gets 2/3 of the way through and then
the screen either goes dark or becomes light with no other image or has
multicolored lines running down the middle and I am forced to restart with
the three finger salute. This PB has had OS X 10.2.6 on it before but I
reformatted and went back to OS 9. What is the deal???

This is got me stumped. I have even switched hard drives. The last time I
tried to install and the PB did it again. This time I can't even mount the
hard drive. It is being resurrected as I type this by Norton Volume Recover.
DiskWarrier couldn't even see it. It mounted with SystemWorks.

In any case, this has got me really worried. If anyone can help I would
really appreciate it. I am beginning to strongly suspect a hardware here. It
is obviously a screen problem. Cable maybe. I just replaced a broken hinge
on the left side. I am thinking something is amiss with the display. Anyone
tell what to check?

Need help...this is sooo not good.

Update-Now I have been able to install OS 10.1. Why not 10.2???

any RAM info either. Apple really wants us to ditch the old and buy the new.
I guess you can do this when you own the box and software in it...

If I may add what knowledge I have.

You should run 2-2-2 as it is faster. But if you run both kinds then
the speed defaults to the slower 2-2-3 for both. Replace the 2-2-3 with
a 2-2-2 and you will see the full amount of RAM installed and some
speed increase although it may not be excitingly notable.

Nick, I have a Maxtor Firewire Cardbuss card with a dongle for two FW

Any way to use fsck in that instance?

Ted, I have a Wallstreet with DVD-ROM and a decoder card. The DVD will not
work with Jaguar. The DVD module in a Wallstreet is not supported by OS X.
If you want to watch DVD's then you have to boot up in OS 9 and have virtual
memory up to 400+. That works well for me. I have 10.2.4 and the DVD app is
installed but it does not recognize the DVD module when you start up the
app. DVDs do mount correctly on the desktop and the decoder card does mount
and show up correctly.

I get very good playback with my DVD module with very few limitations. It
just won't work while using Jaguar.

Re: On the road again

2003-01-30 Thread Byron Gardner
The PowerBook is secured with a nylon strap running between the back
cushion and seat underneath and back up to the front of the seat. Then
I buckle it together after crossing the strap over the PowerBook over
the On/Off button area. The strap is about 3/4 inch wide so this allows
me to cover only the top buttons but not any keys. I cinch it tight and
that keeps the PB still. Granted, it won't stop the PB from flying in a
wreck or rearender, but does work for a hard brake. I learned the hard
way when I sent it flying during one trip before I used the strap.
Braked hard at a light and it went flying off the seat. Fortunately, my
soft side portfolio was in the floor and padded the fall. I decided
never again so came up with the strap. I looked into getting a mount
for laptops but that cost several hundred dollars. Maybe I will make
one someday...

I follow the progress on the screen just the way you think I do.
Glances back and forth. Keep in mind that I rarely look at it while
underway until I get close to my destination. I meet with many
companies in many cities in IL and MO. I locate the address on the
roadside prior to arrival and mark the destination. Then, as I get
closer, I refer to the map onscreen to see streets and turns. It is no
difference to someone glancing at a map as they drive. I'm not talking
constant staring at the screen anymore than you would constantly stare
at a paper map.

The GPS is magnificent to use and very accurate. It is just too bad
that Delorme has decided to drop support to Mac users. Even at version
6.0, my Street Atlas is still very accurate.

And so it goes...

Re: Considering CPU upgrades for wallstreet

2003-01-30 Thread Byron Gardner

Battery life for me has been shorten but not excessively. As we all
know there are some many variables when it comes to measuring battery
life. I have a battery in each bay for both of my WS PB's and I can get
on average 2.5 to three hours of life. Be advised that I use a PC card
for Firewire and USB and this will take additional power.

If I really wanted to I could scale down power usage and extend this to
3.5 to 4 hours max.

One thing to note about using a Sonnet upgrade--you can't use processor
cycling in OS 9 as this will lock up the PowerBook. I am talking
freezing solid. Sonnet will tell you this in their literature. They're
right.

I am using Street Atlas w/ a GPS connected to a USB card while driving.
Very useful and last about 2 hours. I have a power converter in the car
when the batts get low.

What will be the advantage of your upgrade to that of Sonnet or
PowerLogix?

Good point. I neglected to mention. This can be a big issue for OS X,
although I have not had any problems to date. Some screensaver graphics
and similar items run choppy.

Re: Considering CPU upgrades for wallstreet

2003-01-30 Thread Byron Gardner
Gary, let me give you my experiences.

I have two WS PB, a 14 in screen and a 13 in screen. I have put a
Sonnet G3 500Mhz in both with easy installation and no problems in
operation. I am running OS 10.2.3 on both as well as OS 9.2.2. Neither
have had any problems.

But be aware of something that most people overlook. No matter what
upgrade you install, the WS PB will only have a Bus speed of 66 MHZ.
You can install a G3 500MHz or a G4 500Mhz and you will still only have
a 66Mhz bus speed. That means that you can have all that power but it
gets choked down. That is why you will never see increases like the
present day PB which have 100 Mhz buses or better.

Now, you will see a speed increase with the upgrades mentioned above.
It will be noticeable and you won't want to go back to what you had.
Benchmark testing will confirm an improvement in speed.

Some have indicated an increase in temperature after the upgrade. I do
see a noticeable higher temp but nothing unbearable or dangerous.
Always use the PB with good circulation and not a lap pad or pillow
that restricts air flow. O/W you should be Okay.

Executive Summary:

- Noticeable speed increase with some elevation in operating temp.
- Not the same as newer PB due to bus speed limitations.

Best Regards,
Byron

USB 2.0 Adaptec Card

2003-01-17 Thread Byron Gardner
Will this work in 2.0 speed on a PB G3 Wallstreet running 10.2.3?

Do I need new drivers? If so, where to get them?

OR or the 2.0 drivers already built in 10.2.3?

Any way to determine what speed the card is running? (1.1 or 2.0)

Thanks,
Byron

Re: wallstreet startup delay

2003-01-06 Thread Byron Gardner
Chris, I have a wallstreet also (actually two). I have notice some odd
startup behavior with them both. Sometimes I get the long startup delay
after the chime and sometimes I never get the startup chime but
everything starts up normally.

I have noticed that resetting the PRAM fixes the problem but sometimes
it sticks and sometimes it does not.

Do you see the same situation?

I have notice this happening to both my WallStreets after upgrading to
10.2.2. When I shutdown, I get 1/2 or sometimes 1/3 screen full of
colored bands running vertical. Does not appear to cause any problems
other than it ain't normal...

Airport Rookie

2002-10-27 Thread Byron Gardner
Got two Wallstreets setup with wireless cards in each (Lucent Orinoco
Gold and a SMC). When I start an internet connection on one (dial up to
the Airport) and booted up the second PB I found it to be connected as
well. That was weird.

How do I prevent that? (follow me on this?)

Another issue while I have your attention.

I tried to turn on WEP security on the Airport. I locked myself out of
both PB's. I am using WirelessDriver on both. Some cards are supported
using WEP and some are not. If mine are...how do set up WEP security?

Point me to some resources if you know of any...I need some information
on Airport and how to set it up. Painfully lacking...

Thanks Everyone...

Airport and Wallstreet

2002-10-24 Thread Byron Gardner
I am using a SMC wireless card with an Airport Base Station (Snow) and
a Wallstreet with OS 10.2.1. I am using the WirelessDriverBeta software
from sourceforge.net and after considerable wrangling with settings etc
I have managed to get up and running on the Net. OS 10.2.1 has Internet
Connect that will not work with WirelessDriver but a third party
software app called ABS Modem Utility will allow me to connect. It runs
in Classic only right now but it works well.

Here is my question(s):

Is there any utilities or apps available to show the connect speed
obtained once the connection is made? The Modem Utility shows connect
or disconnect only status and not any speeds. I can't tell what baud
rate I am connected at and would like to know how well the connection
is at different locations around the house.

Can I actually connect two computers at a time to the Internet using
dial up and the base station? I have two separate Wallstreets with the
SMC card in one and an Orinoco Gold in the other. Can they both be
connected at once?

The Airport Setup Assistant and Internet Connect will not recognize
anything but the Apple Airport Cards. Does anyone know of any third
party cards that ARE recognized?

Sorry for the lengthy post but this is really interesting and
information about this is limited to me.

Thanks,
Byron

Re: chasing jaguars on wall street

2002-10-02 Thread Byron Gardner

Strongly consider upgrading the Wallstreet to 500 MHz using a
PowerLogix or Sonnet upgrade. A 233 is just too slow to really use
Jaguar. You can use it but it is slow and not acceptable.

Get all the RAM you can will certainly help.

Re: wall street power questions

2002-10-01 Thread Byron Gardner

Chris, I find that long delay in both my Wallstreets running OS 9.2.2
and I have found it due to networking configurations. If I disconnect
the ethernet cable, the delay is much shorter. I see the same behavior
with OS 10.2.1. But I know what you mean about long--it is really
annoying.

The battery issue is interesting as I am guessing you are also a PC
laptop user such as I. (Have to as that is what my job calls for---not
my choice people so please no nastygrams)

The Wallstreet batteries from Apple have lights on them which light up
as the battery is charging. Third party batteries do not with the
exception of BTI batteries. The only way to see if the batteries are
charging are by looking at a running PB and in the menu bar the battery
icon has the lighten bolt by it. PC laptops all have some kind of light
indicating charging and connection status. I guess Apple feels they are
better than that. Of course, when you own the software and the box it
goes in you can do what you want. (That's why some feel that Jaguar
should be named Cheatah since it takes $129.00 to own it.)

In any case, there is no charging light except on the original Apple
batteries and Apple ain't making those anymore

BTW, I am not an expert but have had my original Wallstreet for 11
years now. It has served well. The other was a hand me down but just as
rugged. They are good machines, last of the serial machines.

Take care,
Byron

Need help...or direct me to it, please

2002-07-11 Thread Byron Gardner

I know this is for G-Books but don't know where to turn to.

I have a PB 180c that won't keep the right time. When I change it in the
Date and Time CP it changes to something else right before my eyes. Never
seen this before.

Would a dead PRAM battery cause this behavior? I have done the usual, reset
the PRAM etc. I mean it changes time and date when I click outside the time
box in the D&T control panel. Seems to change at random. Weird.

Any help is appreciated and welcome. Or direct me to the right place
someone.

Thanks,
Byron

Don't feel bad...I have been through several now myself with my PB and they

I can get them to charge only about 88% of capacity.

Rod, what happened to the Power Manager board that let you know something

I am having problems now with both batteries all of a sudden not showing a

Battery Problem-G3 Series

2002-04-28 Thread Byron Gardner

Need some help please...

I have two new batteries, different brands, for my G3 Wallstreet. Both
batteries show ~16.80 volts when inserted in the PB using the application
MyBattery PPC. The menu bar battery shows a depleted battery icon and the PB
goes down on low voltage sleep when unplugged.

I can't get the PB to charge and none of my battery indicators will indicate
a charging state when plugged in including the battery icon next to the time
display in the menu bar.

I have tried inserting and reinserting. No change. They have been charging
overnight. I have reset the PowerManager with shift-function-control-power
and have reset the PRAM. No luck. I know these batteries are good.

Anyone have any ideas what is going on?
