Bluetooth Q

2006-02-06 Thread David Rodriguez
I've got a bluetooth question for someone knowledgeable. I am using
a G4 Ti book. I'd like to have a better voip connection with Skype
and go 'wireless' . So I have been contemplating acquiring a
bluetooth headset and bluetooth USB adapter.

My question is this. Most of the bluetooth earpieces out there are
bluetooth Version 1, which gives a 33' distance, but there are some
bluetooth V. 2 adapters out there that work at 66'. So if the V2
adapter is transmitting at 66', will the V.1 earpiece work at that
distance or be limited to 33'? Not to confuse Bluetooth version with
USB versions.

I suppose the V.2 earpieces won't be long before introduction so I
could wait, but the price is right now for V.1 earpieces.

The other variable I may have is that I only have USB 1.1 on my book,
unless I use a USB 2.0 Cardbus (which I have) and plug into that. So
not sure if I may get a bottleneck with the factory usb speed but
that's another issue.

TIA

Dave

Re: Lombard won't boot

2006-01-29 Thread David Rodriguez

Tim,

What I grew to realize with my Lombard with the bad cache is that
it's just much better and easier on the book to let it sleep
overnight rather then shut down. While the reset was no real hassle,
allowing it to sleep is easier on the power switch anyhow, bad cache
or not.So like with any system, once in a while I would reboot,
just to clear things out. And once a month, I began to use the fsck
method as well as DiskWarrior, simply as a matter of preventative
maintenance on both my desktop and book. I do the same sleep
overnight and maintenance with my new TiBook now.

I never found the bad L2 cache to be an issue for me except when
maybe the short time I was running OS9 on it, then it would give the
alert at startup, which took a simple click of the mouse, as well as
the reset. It ran much better under Jaguar, then better under
Panther, and even better under Tiger (which of course requires either
XpostFacto or installing Tiger on the drive, while it is hooked up to
another supported system). So Caleb, definitely Panther is better
then Jaguar but both ran well. That said, since I now have a newer
book, I have put my Lombard up for sale, and while it has been very
dependable, I will be saying bye to it soon.

Dave

Also, I'm not sure if you are a victim of the Lombard issue with OS
X that I am :)) but to get it to start I have to push the small
reset button on the back of my Lombard before every start up. Works
every time

Re: Lombard won't boot

2006-01-28 Thread David Rodriguez

Caleb,

Here's what to try. Follow carefully. Learned this from someone who
knows.

Have you tried fsck method?

What you want to do is shut down or restart, hold down the Command
and S key. You will then get a bunch of text scrolling across the
screen. Once this starts, you can let off the keys. It will
continue until it stops and gives you a prompt.

Type in fsck -yMake sure you leave a space after the k.
Then push Enter. Let it do its thing. It will begin repairing any
corrupted unix files used by OSX. When it is done, you can do it
again. After its says repairs have been made, then type logout

If you use a Journaled Disk, then you want to type infsck -f
instead. This will force repair.

The regular OSX will then begin booting up. You should then restart.

This has repaired some of the most major problems but instructions
must be followed to the letter. If anybody would like to add to this
before Caleb uses it, please do.

Re: feet

2006-01-27 Thread David Rodriguez
One valuable aspect of having these feet is that they do provide a
small amount of airflow underneath if being used on a flat surface.
Simply keeping the bottom of the book from having direct contact with
a solid surface allows excess heat to escape. Some of the books
provide hardly any so if you are replacing, it might be worthwhile
finding some just a little taller then the originals.

A few weeks ago I noticed on ebay several people selling replacement
feet. Don't remember exactly where it was but some searching should
produce if you need them. I'm also going to be ordering a bunch of
feet (much larger) soon for a project so maybe I can buy some that
will fit most books too while I'm at it.

Re: putting recording on PB

2006-01-20 Thread David Rodriguez
I just noticed an app on VersionTracker called 'Audio Hijack'. Might
enable you to do exactly what you want. This is an OSX App, but I
don't recall off hand which OS you are using.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18611

There are several others there that you might try that have been
around a while like Sound Recorder and Sound Studio, among others
depending on your OS.

Re: putting recording on PB

2006-01-20 Thread David Rodriguez

Hi Amber,

I don't know if this will work, but using one of the sound recording
applications, I wonder if by hooking up the phone jacks from your
book to the outgoing jack of the answering machine, then playing msg,
would transmit the voice msg to your book with Recording On? I have
not tried this and I don't believe there is any way to hurt any
components anyhow, but it might be worth trying. After all, sound
does travel through the phone lines and your computer modem is
designed to understand these signals. May need to turn off DSL (if
equipped) and turn on modem in Network Prefs. Could require a few
different tries using different settings. Just an idea, no guarantees.

Dave

I would appreciate some suggestions on how to do the following:

I am canceling my regular phone service to have the digital phone
service installed this weekend.
I have a couple of important messages that I HAVE to save from my
voicemail and I am wondering how to do it.

I tried using the speakerphone to play the messages and then my
iPod (with iTalk attachment) to record it but the sound quality is
abysmal. So, I am wondering if anybody could possibly offer some
recommendations ?

Thanks,

Amber

Re: Hot Lombard

2006-01-10 Thread David Rodriguez
Yeah, that's real hot. One thing you might check is where the heat
may be originating. Pretty easy to tell if under the dvd or just
cpu. If the underside of the dvd player is also 'real' hot, it may
simply be venting towards hard drive and cpu and overloading fans.

Get some airspace underneath the laptop when in use. As Andrew says,
don't use a pillow. With a Lombard, even a hard surface doesn't
provide the best ventilation but it's better then a pillow for sure.
You may be lucky that you didn't damage the processor at those
temps. As I recall, that is what leads to the damaged L2 Cache.
You may also want to check that your fans are working properly, like
no shorts or 'linted' up from long term pillow use.

Dave

Dear listers, and, more specifically, fellow Lombard users,

I've got my Lombard in my lap, as it virtually lives in my
recliner. However, I was watching some video in VLC when I felt
things getting hot. I then fired up TemperatureX and saw that my
Lombard was running a smokin' 183 degrees Fahrenheit. Didn't even
hear a fan, but I know there has to be on going, because it's
dropped twenty-five degrees since I've been typing this email. Is
this normal for a Lombard to get that hot?

Thanks,
Caleb

*All temperatures are CPU readings from TemperatureX.

Re: No wakeup problem

Jim,

I've noticed similar behavior with my airport connection after I let
the machine 'fall asleep' on its own. But if I 'put' it to sleep, no
such problem. In fact, if after it falls asleep and I wake it up
resulting in lost connection, I can 'put' it back to sleep, wake it
up, and connection is fine. Go figure.

I think there is some discussion on this in the Apple forums but I
wasn't paying attention to it yet. May look around this weekend.

Re: Superdrive Question?

2005-12-21 Thread David Rodriguez

You already said that. :)

Yep, it is possible it is plain broke. The guy I bought it from said
it stopped working, well when he dropped a gallon paint can on top of
that corner (with the screen open). Yeah, I pictured a totally
crushed corner too. But, no serious damage to the palm rest although
it did impact. Though not too bad, it is already repaired with a
little glue. There was no cd in the drive and I have learned that
this drive uses the same lens for both cd and dvd, so that would
indicate the cd components went bad. But I still wonder if the drive
failure had something to do with installation of some software, but
no telling at this point. There were clearly some issues with
10.3.9. I still am going to try and get this one working but will be
picking up a superdrive either way.

Thnx,

Dave

It's possible the drive just plain broke. I have a 1GHz 15"
Aluminum and the
Combo drive crapped out on me over a year ago, with the exact same
symptoms
as yours (DVD reads data and played movies, CD didn't read or
write). Apple

replaced it under warranty for me.

You can add a SuperDrive to yours without any new hardware
required. I've
purchased and installed them for customers and they work nicely.
Here's a

link to OWC. They have a good selection available:

Re: Superdrive Question?

2005-12-20 Thread David Rodriguez
But yes RB, they are audio cd's (with data files on them). Resetting
the pmu didn't work.

I am running Tiger 10.4.3. I am wondering if anybody has this
file? It is called 'CD Info.cidb' file. It is your in Users/Home/
Library/Preferences folder. Someone on the Apple site forum said it
get corrupted but I don't even have it. I suspect it gets created
after using some form of cd format, but this powerbook may have been
upgraded since the drive stopped working, so said file may never have
been generated. My guess anyhow...

So now wondering if anybody has it in their folder. Thanks,
Dave

Actually I have several things to try yet re the combo drive.
These were data disks so really wasn't considering whether there
was an audio disk issue. Apparently there are some files though
that can get corrupted that I can try removing. Apparently
resetting the pmu may also have an impact according to the Apple
web site. About to shut down and try that next.

The thing is, yeah I may fix the combo drive, BUT I REALY want
to be able to burn dvd's on this too. So I am wanting to take the
opportunity to upgrade to a Superdrive. I can always sell the
combo drive off after I fix it if it happens.

Dave

David...

I'd say a critical question is, "Why does the DVD work, but the
audio CD does
not?" I'm assuming the DVD audio is fine, correct? If so, then
clearly there
is no laser registration issue, and the fact that DVD audio works
indicates the
audio circuitry in the drive is fine. Are you sure there is not
another,

simpler--but, perhaps less obvious--issue?

2005-12-20 Thread David Rodriguez

G-day all,

I purchased a used G4 800 DVI Powerbook this last weekend.
Everything runs fine and its in great shape, except the Combo drive.
It was damaged by prior owner. DVD still works but no cd performance
at all.

So wondering about compatibility of Superdrives. Specifically, does
anybody know if a Superdrive from an Imac G5 would fit? If it's just
a matter of exchanging exterior drive mounting hardware, not a
problem. If there are physical orientation or size differences of
the drive itself, then that would be an issue. Obviously they are
both slot loading.

Could use the information relatively soon. Thanks,

Dave

Re: Titanium Hinge Replacement

2005-11-30 Thread David Rodriguez

Thanks Bruce,

I had googled but came up with a variety of 'experiences' so was
hoping to receive some more first-hand feedback here.

I guess the only other question I have for anyone is if there is any
good or bad feedback on the Rev 1 Titaniums? In this case a G4 500.

Re: G3 Lombard

2005-11-29 Thread David Rodriguez

Hi Caleb,

I am using a Lombard G3 400 with a bad processor L2 cache. I have
been using it with little problem for the last 5 months this way.
There is a hassle that comes with it. Anytime you shut down, you
must first press the reset button before booting. In OS9, you will
get an alert at startup. In OSX, no alerts. I am using OS Tiger now
with no additional problems. Speed is tolerable.

Titanium Hinge Replacement

2005-11-29 Thread David Rodriguez
Looking at picking up a 1st Gen G4 Titanium. Problem is it has a
broken hinge from being dropped. Machine appears to work fine
otherwise.

Wondering if I could get some quick feedback on the complexity of
this task myself. Am fairly adept and have ample precision tools.
Just never been in a Titanium.

Re: Lombard/Tiger/Install Q's

2005-11-21 Thread David Rodriguez

Hello people of the G-Book list, I have been following this thread,
for I too have a Lonbard that I am trying to upgrade to X.4.3 At the
present time it's sitting at X.2.8 because whenever I attempt to go
beyond X.2.8 it locks up on the gray screen. The stats for the Book
are

as follows: 400MHz processor, 6gig hard drive, 128mb of ram, which I
believe is the reason X.3 has trouble loading plus the size of the
harddrive, standard video card, cd-rom/dvd-rom.
My question is does anyone else on the list consider the ram to be the
issue here. It runs X.2.8 without a hitch but it sure would be nice to
take it to the limit.
The other thing is, I don't want to have to use XPF on this machine
if I

don't have to, so I am willing to keep it at X.3.9 if that's what it
takes to not have to use XPF. So what's the verdict.
Thanks for any and all assistance in this matter.
Brad

Hi Brad,

As someone who has just upgraded to 10.4.3 on his Lombard, I'll
respond while it's fresh.

I believe your post makes many of us wonder if you are installing
Tiger with the drive in the Lombard? The only way you CAN do this IS
if you use XPF because the Lombard is NOT supported by Tiger. So
you either need to install Tiger with the drive connected to a
supported machine's IDE Bus, in a Firewire or USB2 enclosure.

Ironically, Tiger refused to install with the drive in either of the
firewire or USB2 enclosure's I had. Not sure why. I have formatted
many an IDE drive in both of these so can't give a definitive answer
at this point why some work and some don't. Might be the bridgeboard
used? Actually I had a third firewire enclosure but it was just
easier to hook it up to my IDE BUS and it worked first try this way.

I simply removed the hard drive from the Lombard, hooked it up to my
Sawtooth IDE Bus using a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE Cable Adapter as Master at
the end of the cable. You can pick these adapters up on ebay for
$10-12. Booted the machine with the Tiger DVD, then installed Tiger
directly over Panther. Of course I backed up my Lombard data before
doing so. Some advocate doing a clean install of Tiger, but as far
as I can tell, there was no need for this on my end. Your mileage
may vary. The only glitch I had was a well documented third party
software conflict which, once I removed it, it quickly fixed the
shutdown problem I had.

Well I might have addressed more then you had questions about but
couldn't tell from your post if you were using XPF or if you had
removed the drive? You DEFINITELY want more ram then you have. I'm
sure others will have more info if you can clarify a bit more.

Re: Lombard/Tiger/Install Q's

2005-11-20 Thread David Rodriguez
Just to report that the install went smooth. Operating system work
just fine, however did have a problem with not being able to shut
down. Was forced to remove power sources in order to shut down.
Went through process of elimination and repairs and searching the
net. The last possibility turned out to be Intech Speedtools. Turns
out a few of it's files conflict with the Shutdown sequence.
QuickBackStartupItem and SpeedtoolsDTStartupItem both need to updated
or removed. I simply removed for now and the problem went away.

So now happily running Tiger 10.4.3. Thanks guys for the initial
input. Full steam ahead! (OK, I'm sitting here watching the
Poseidon Adventure).

Re: Lombard/Tiger/Install Q's

2005-11-20 Thread David Rodriguez

Dave, why not into getting the L2 cache replaced ? Daystar or Wegener
can do it. With no L2 , X probably runs like a dog (a bad dog at
that).

Mad Dog

Hey Mad Dog,

I've been running 10.3.9 with a bad cache for 6 months. Actually runs
pretty good so have been content and can't complain. Definitely not a
dog but obviously could always be faster too. When I need to get into
more intensive work, I can simply jump to the desktop. Fixing the
Lombard also hasn't been in the budget as I have been dedicating all my
extra funds and energy into developing a new computer product. Can't
say what it is yet but hope to launch soon. After it reaches the
marketplace, I then hope to go out and buy a new laptop. So until
then, the Lombard will do.

I guess the big questions I still need to answer are: Will the Lombard
handle all the way up to 10.4.3? And, is it best to run the updates
from the Lombard itself or while the drive is in a supported system?
(That is, assuming I don't go the XPF route).

Thnx,

Dave

Re: Lombard/Tiger/Install Q's

2005-11-19 Thread David Rodriguez

Hey Will,

I seem to have a slight dilemma in regards to xpf.

It requires you to turn on the L2 Cache. Problem is, my L2 cache is
failed on my processor. So don't know where to go from here?

I wonder if XPF simply allows direct installation on the Lombard or
actually enables usage?

The known workaround for putting Tiger on Lombards is to simply remove
the hard drive, hook it up to a supported machine via firewire or ide,
and then do the install, then put the drive back in the lombard. With
my L2 cache issue, it may be best for me to go this route unless there
are other issues.

Still reading xpf info and forum to learn more.

Lombard/Tiger/Install Q's

2005-11-19 Thread David Rodriguez

Hey all,

Well I've been running Panther on my Lombard with a bad L2 cache for a
while now. Have had no problems as long as I remember to push reset
before booting if I shut down.

I guess its time to upgrade to Tiger now however. I've looked through
the archives since September but couldn't find any posts addressing it.
So being the Lombard is not supported for Tiger, I have a few
questions for those running Tiger on their Lombards. I will be
removing the hard drive and either using the firewire connection or
simply install it directly to the ide bus using a 2.5" drive adapter.

1) What's the maximum version of Tiger able to run on the Lombards w/o
glitches? Can I upgrade all the way up to 10.4.3?

2) After installing the base system, do the upgrades also need to be
run from a drive hooked up via firewire on a supported system? Or can
the upgrades simply be run with the drive back inside the Lombard?

Thanks In Advance,

Dave

VOIP Option

2005-09-14 Thread David Rodriguez
I was just wondering if and how many listers here use Skype to make
long distance phone calls over the internet? It seems to be pretty
popular and much cheaper then others such as Vonage. (Of course 9-1-1
is not available at this time, so this is not a substitute for a
regular phone in that context)

Now that I've finally got a fast connection out in the rural area using
Clearwire, I am able to utilize voip w/o having to wait a few seconds
for my transmission to reach by friends. The port Skype uses is also
not blocked with Clearwire DSL, whereas I understand the one Vonage
uses is (port 80).

For those who don't know, Skype is a VOIP (Voice Over Internet
Protocol) program that basically allows you to make phone calls over
the internet. With Skype, calls are free to those who also have skype
on their computer. If you call to a land line or cell phone, there is
an average local rate charge and you buy minutes up front using Paypal
even. You can check it out at www.skype.com.

I'm also curious how those with powerbooks are dealing with the slight
inadequacies of their lower quality microphone and speakers, which does
make for poor voice quality. I have an old Jabra that clears things
right up, but my speaker jack seems to have a slightly loose contact,
so need to find a better headset. It's also a minor hassle having to
plug and unplug both mic and speaker all the time, nobody wants to wear
any kind of headphone all the time. So I'm just wondering if anybody
has come up with a better solution?

Chris,

I've sold lots of cdrw and some dvdrw drives over the last few years.
If there is one brand I would suggest you stay away from, it is
Phillips. I have seen more failed Phillips drives then probably all
others combined. You can probably still go onto ebay and find bundles
of 50 available for cheap. Do yourself a favor and reconsider. My 2ยข.

One thing I've discovered in using my Lombard w/ ethernet cable is that
I occasionally have to push the plug in the back to get a better
connection. Not hard but just enough to make solid connection. There
appears to be just a tiny bit of slop with the jack plugged in. This
seems to makes the difference between getting a connection and not, or
minimally, a poor vs good connection. This is worth checking out as a

Re: Mail app & the bounce feature

2005-08-06 Thread David Rodriguez
I have discovered that if I'm going to do a lot of computer work, and I
have my mail retrieval set to 1 minute increments, and I am fast on the
trigger with the bounce button, I can often successfully bounce without
getting a Returned Mail receipt.

The reason I believe it works this way is that the spammers have their
recipient list ready to go, set up a Yahoo email (most often anyhow),
insert all the victim addresses, send, and delete their own address (or
are deleted by default by Yahoo after being identified as a spammer due
to all the traffic they just sent out).

Basically I am bouncing before the spammer gets a chance to disconnect
their address. If I have it set for 5 minutes, not a chance. Of
course, like someone previously, they may ignore the bounces anyhow
and so it may just be an exercise in futility. I Dunno...

Dave

I like to Bounce 'em, too, but most of the spam that I get has faked
return addresses, so the Bounce doesn't go through, and I get one more
message in my inbox to deal with.

Mine's got a 400 mhz so I'm not expecting super speeds, but it really
doesn't seem to be running slow either considering. In the few months

Again re the speed, doesn't OSX disable or do something different with

Re: General Lombard Questions.

2005-07-12 Thread David Rodriguez

Hi William,

Welcome to the club. I have had a Lombard for the last few months with
a bad L2 Cache. I have been running 10.3.9 quite satisfactorily
however. The only ritual I must live by is to press the reset button
before startup. So far, I haven't forgot once. If I did, then I would
need to go through another ritual of booting to cd, and then selecting
the OSX disk and restart, but circumvent the actual restart and Shut
Down instead (because bad L2 Cache Lombards won't restart). Then I
press the reset and boot up. But like I say, I haven't forgotten to
press the reset so haven't had to do this minor hassle.

Other then that, it runs great in OSX with a bad cache. I'm not really
sure what (if any) problems would develop by running this way? I never
found out why OSX does not provide alert at startup of the bad cache
(as opposed to OS9 which does). I also can't zap pram because it won't
restart, but I guess the reset button takes care of any issues.
Luckily the reset doesn't reset the clock or then it would be
unbearable.

Anyway, I have found the Lombard can be a very usable system if you can
get used to following a simple procedure.

NEVER Restart!
ALWAYS reset before boot.

If you can remember these two simple rules, it works great.

I have OS9 installed but haven't used it at all. As I recall,
switching back & forth gets a little more complicated, once again the
key seems to be, no restart! Always cold boot when selecting a startup
disk.

Until I find a deal on a faster processor, that's how I use my Lombard.

Here's a decent temp monitor I found for powerbooks which monitors the
hard drive temp only on Lombards. This is for OSX. Not sure how
accurate it is but it gives some indication of what is happening. I'm
guessing cpu temp is not possible for the Lombard but I'd like to hear
otherwise if anybody knows.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994

Dave

The biggest annoyance I have noted is that the Lombard will not
startup unless I first hit the reset on the back of the machine.
Pressing the power button generates a bong, but nothing further
happens.

Thanks for the ideas. Dave

a while ago i installed a belkin card in my aunt's lombard. it only
works in os x, not in 9, but she is very pleased with it and has had
no problems. hope it helps. g

I am using Orinoco Gold Classic Card for my Lombard running 9.2.2 It
works great... Kristina

For the card to be recognized in OS 9, you need to make sure you find
an older card. For OS X, you will need additional driver so make sure
you check the compatibility list of the driver before buying a card.

2005-06-21 Thread David Rodriguez

Hi list members,

Well I guess this is my maiden post on this list. Looking for some
guidance. I have a Lombard running Panther. Running with the bad L2
cache, but its not so bad as long as I remember to push the reset every
time 'before' I boot up. If not, then have to boot to cd, then to OS9,
then to Panther. And do it all with out restarting. Like I said, not
so bad. :)

Anyway, I'd like to be able to take advantage of the Wifi hot spots
when in town, so wondering what are the best cardbus brands to find for
Macs?

Thanks in advance,

Dave
