Re: WallStreet upgrade: enquiries and ruminations

2006-02-08 Thread Gene Osburn

So yeah: do I really need a G4, and are there any cheaper/faster
options, such as getting the G3 and overclocking it, or is 500 mhz the
limit on a WallStreet because of bus speed?

You'll be much happier with G4 so don't even consider G3...seriously.
Here's an affordable upgrade from an outstanding company:

Also, I'll cosign Bruce and Laurent's recommendation of DMS for your

They're a small shop in the Carolinas with remarkably offhand business

but it could take a while to complete a transaction. I paid for a WS
battery charger from them and didn't find out until ten days later

Re: Gmail & Gbooks

2005-12-09 Thread Gene Osburn

I've never used webmail either... too cumbersome, too slow (or at
least it
WAS). Who wants to have to go log on the net just to get into your
email?

I had a Yahoo account for years but rarely used it and I use Gmail
exclusively now.

I don't use my ISP email at all because Gmail is so
much easier.

Wow, now THAT I would have to see and experience! ;-)

I've used Gmail as my only email account for nearly a year now; and to
think I had to be talked into it by a friend because of my dislike of
webmail I use their POP service, which means a copy goes directly
to my desktop email client (OS X Mail) and I still have everything on
their servers if I wanna search for anything in particular. I can
still check via webmail when I'm on the move and using my PowerBook --
love that flexibility!

I've used Gmail for a couple of years almost and have
used 7% of my storage space and I could have thrown away a bunch more
but I keep an archive of this list and 3 others.

That's amazing... I may have to give it a "test run" with one of my
lesser

accounts and see how it feels.

Lemme know if you want an invite.

Re: THANK YOU ALL! - Re: G4-iBook w/o OS - Question

2005-12-09 Thread Gene Osburn
>What's the most important factor on an ibook for it to work the
best/faster?

Max RAM will have the most salutory effect - I'd say *AT LEAST* 512 MB
is needed, 1 GB or more is even better.

>Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
>The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC
G3-G4-G5 >but one seller had said 800mhz would be better and another
comment at >amazon someone said 800mhz was even too slow for Tiger.

It'll "function okay" but whether it's fast enough is a subjective
opinion. I'd say that with max RAM a G3/500 iBook would be more than
adequate for light duty use, but if you do more than basic stuff you'll
be much happier with at least a G4/800 iBook.

Re: WSII won't see RAM in top slot

2005-11-29 Thread Gene Osburn

Well, it does actually see the RAM because it boots to OS X, but
here's the weird thing. Everything is fine and I see the apple and the
spinning lines, then the screen goes really dark, like the backlight
shuts off.

That may not have anything to do with your RAM problem. 10.2.8 does
that to many WS -- you need to press the brightness button below the
display once startup has reached the desktop.

If the RAM is in the bottom slot it does login fine. I have tried
resetting the pram. I have tried a DIMM I know is working on the top
slot. I was able to boot, but it only sees the memory in the bottom
slot, well, it says it has 128MB's. I have 10.2.8 and system profiler
doesn't show the RAM slots.

ASP will only show working SO-DIMMs -- if you have two good modules
installed it will show them both. If you switch SO-DIMMs back and
forth between the top and bottom slots and it only shows the bottom
module, I'd say you probably need a new CPU module. That would be a
good excuse to go for Daystar's $169 G4/466 upgrade:
https://4daystar.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=512 ...;^D

Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop

2005-11-26 Thread Gene Osburn

I have been trying out some various apple laptops,
primarily for use as a writing tool, though I want to
surf wirelessly.
I want small size, battery longevity, cool running,
wireless ability (doesn't have to be built-in as long
as I can add on).

I love those 12" white iBooks and would buy a used one
of those in a heartbeat, except I keep running into
people who are having repair nightmares with them.
Are the white iBooks really just waiting to die? I
just don't want to spend $350-$450 on a 12" iBook and
have the logic board go after a few months.

AFAIK you only hear about problems with iBooks because Mac users are so
particular and so vocal; they're actually quite reliable 'Books that
perform nicely for your intended uses. I really liked the G3/500
"IceBook" that I owned for about a year, and never had a problem. The
500-600 MHz models should be available at decent prices via ebay and/or
the Swaplist, and would do quite well for you.

My thoughts on how well other 'Books I've owned meet your criteria:
- The 2400c is a sweet little PB, BUT...
Good batteries (more than 60-90 minutes of runtime) can be hard to come
by. You might also find the 800x600 10.4" display a little cramped. If
you can find one that's been upgraded with a G3 processor and/or RAM maxed
to 112 MB, you might be able to live with the limitations. The keyboard's
only 87% of standard size so you might find it a little cramped (I didn't
but some folks do).
- A 1400c with a G3 upgrade and RAM maxed at 64 MB is a VERY nice writing
machine -- one of the best keyboards ever in a laptop. The 800x600 11.3"
display seemed to "feel" a little bigger to me; only about an inch larger
diagonally than the 2400's, but felt a bit more usable. (I have a G3/250
1400 I'm looking to sell, if you wanna contact me offlist.)
- If you don't mind the heft (8 lbs. or more with battery, etc.) you'll
find the 3400c an EXCELLENT 'Book for writing and basic internet. The
display is also only 800x600 but it's 12"...and the 144 MB RAM max is is a
nice upgrade compared to the 1400 and 2400; more than adequate for running
OS 9.1 comfortably. I've just switched to a 240 MHz model as my second
Mac, primarily for exactly the uses you indicate -- writing and internet.

All three of the x400 'Books do wi-fi internet quite well with PC cards,
so basically your choice of which to use will largely depend one three
factors: budget, display size preference, and speed (what's "fast enough"
for you). The Dual USB 12" iBooks are of course more modern and more
powerful and the 1024x768 display would feel very roomy compared to the
older 'Books, but you can save a pretty penny by going with one of the
x400's.

Re: what's that burning smell?

2005-11-16 Thread Gene Osburn

iBook powered down and closed on my lap, when suddenly I heard
a >popf<, kind of like a Christmas tree bulb had blown. A metallic,
burned-fuse kind of smell wafted from the back of the grill. I
immediately removed the battery and resigned as chief mac mechanic of
our household.

What was that >popfing< sound, that smell? Dare I try to boot again?

Sounds exactly like what happened when my Wallstreet's battery blew a
cell. I heard an "airy popping sound" and the battery was very hot
along one side when I pulled it. Was your iBook AC adapter connected
when this happened? Did you smell your battery when you pulled it? My
WS was either asleep or powered off (can't remember) and charging the
battery when it happened. I suppose a battery going whacko and about
to blow could have some effect on the other symptoms you
experienced...?

Re: going wireless with my wallstreet

2005-10-26 Thread Gene Osburn

http://static.flickr.com/26/56141137_148c7bdf00.jpg?v=0

i was wondering if i could go wireless with my
wallstreet, it can't be that slow can it? i only want
to use it for email. and where can i get these parts
online? i live in a college town with no apple or
apple related stores for miles.

Tessa,

Most of the few responses to your inquiry that I've seen so far (I'm in
digest mode) are OK as far as they go, but it seems you need much more
complete info. It sounds like you're pretty much a newbie to wi-fi
with Apple PowerBooks, so I'll try to summarize my experience as
completely as possible.

First, OS 9.2.1 is a great match for the Wallstreet and will not be as
slow as you might fear. If you have a Rev 1 "Mainstreet" model with no
cache it will be a bit pokey but definitely still usable. Look at the
info plate on the bottom of your WS; if there's no system configuration
summary then you have the cacheless Mainstreet. My Rev 2 "PDQ" reads:
14.1TFT/233MHz-512K/32MB/2gb HD/4MB video/CD/Modem. For future
reference, if you have a Mainstreet don't even *THINK* about installing
OS X.

Second, the 32 MB of RAM you have now is *NOT* enough; find at least a
128 MB module to add ASAP (there are two RAM slots and one of yours is
empty). If you can afford $40-50 get a 256 MB SO-DIMM -- your
Wallstreet will love you for it.

Third, 802.11b is all the wi-fi you'll ever need; don't be suckered
into buying one of the newer 802.11g because you think newer must be
better. There are a lot of Orinoco 802.11b cards floating around, and
the best place to find cheap Orinoco wi-fi cards is ebay, plain and
simple. You'd have to hunt high and low at online retailers to find a
real deal; they're falling off the trees on ebay. Get a Silver or
Gold, and don't pay over $30 (total including shipping) for one; I paid
$24 shipped for a new-stock Gold about a year ago. (There are maybe a
dozen or more brands of 802.11b wi-fi cards that are actually Orinocos;
mine was an Enterasys RoamAbout, and even Dell sells a couple.) There
are no new software drivers for OS X, but you shouldn't need to worry
about that. Orinoco v7.2 is the latest OS 9 driver; you can Google for
a free download.

Fourth, join the LEM Swaplist ASAP! Lots of helpful Mac folks there,
buying and selling used Mac stuff.

Good luck, and happy Mac-ing!

Re: Help with posting and USB for a Wallstreet

2005-09-29 Thread Gene Osburn

Barbara Tate implores us:

I need help finding out how to connect my Wallstreet II/233 with cache
to

USB so that I can buy a scanner.

CardBus USB PCMCIA cards are plentiful (and relatively cheap) through a
variety of online sources: ebay, the Swaplist, Mac retailers via the
links at Low End Mac (gotta help the list sponsor when we can, eh?),
etc. I'd suggest you try Amazon.com via the Low End Mac link.

I have emailed
G-Books@mail.maclaunch.com twice and had both messages rejected because
both messages were received as follows:

Failed to deliver to ''
LIST module(list G-Books) reports:
  Your message cannot be posted.
It is composed using the 'windows-1252' character set,
and this list accepts ISO-8859-1 only

I made sure the second email showed ISO-8859-1, so I don't understand
what the problem is or how to correct the problem.

The list servers at maclaunch.com are notoriously flaky. I've had the
same problem in the past, IIRC with Apple Mail in OS X 10.2.x; my
compose/send format was properly set to ISO-8859-1 as well but I
frequently got bounced. I don't recall details of how I dealt with it
(I do remember using another email client [Thunderbird?] for a while),
but it hasn't been an issue for me for some time now with updated
versions of Mail (and 10.3 Panther). Perhaps the latest version of
Mail will resolve the issue for you?

Re: Wallstreet batteries

2005-09-28 Thread Gene Osburn

I've got a battery that doesn't show up when inserted. I assume it's
dead.

It's the only battery I have for this wallstreet. It's been stored for
several years, was fine before that.

Is there any utility that might get the computer to try charging it?
I'm
just wondering if maybe the charge has dropped so low that the
computer
doesn't recognise it, but perhaps if given some juice it may still
have a

little life in it.

There used to be a little utility from Apple called, I believe,
"BatteryReset", which would just reset the little chip on the battery
so

that the battery would communicate with the Wallstreet that it's OK to
charge. Not sure where it is on the Apple download site, though...

Battery Reset only works with batteries that still have at least a
trace charge in them. If the WS can't "see" the battery in the bay
it's too dead to be revived. Sad but true -- LiIons that are stored
for too long without at least a 30-40% charge will die. I've never
even heard of any external charger/conditioner that will revive a LiIon
once it's reached this state; has anyone else actually "saved" one of
these...?

Fwd: Wallstreet G4 Upgrade available

2005-09-22 Thread Gene Osburn
Since there's been a fair bit of discussion of Wallstreet upgrades
lately I thought I'd share this with y'all. In following up on Mad
Dog's tip that Daystar/XLR8 will make a G4 upgrade for your WS if asked
(thanks, Tom!), I emailed Daystar yesterday to inquire about costs.
Well, it looks like they've been getting more than a few such inquiries
lately; look at the response I got this morning

We now have the Wallstreet upgrades up on the web.

The fastest we can get you to is the MAChSpeed G4 466 this is
actually faster then our Lombard upgrades which are a little newer
machine then the Wallstreet.

The cost of the upgrade is $199.00 + shipping this is our cheapest
PowerBook upgrade to date.  You can look at the product on our store
site below:

 https://4daystar.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=512

Thanks for your interest in the Daystar Upgrades!  Let me know if I
can do anything else for you.

Re: WallStreet G3 233 PowerBook

2005-09-21 Thread Gene Osburn

I have found a;
14" Powerbook - G3 233 Wallstreet
I suspect the model is the CHEAP-O Cacheless model

Anything I should watch out for?

I am typing this on a 233MHz/512KB cache model with a 14'' screen. I am
pretty sure that the 14'' models did not come on the 233MHz cacheless.

Actually the first Wallstreets had three different display size choices
- 12.1", 13.3" and 14.1"; IIRC the 12.1" was stock on the 233 MHz
"Mainstreet" model but the other screen sizes were BTO options. The
Series II "PDQ" models had 14.1" displays standard, with 12.1"
available as a cost-saver.

So the display size isn't a reliable indicator of which "Series" WS you
have. I'd check the info plate on the bottom of the 'Book. My Series
II reads: 14.1TFT/233MHz-512K/32MB/2GB HD/4MB video/CD/Modem; I've
heard the Mainstreets don't have this info on the bottom.

Although it seems nothing in Apple i cheap I found this upgrade
reasonable.

http://www.wegenermedia.com/wllst400.htm
Its a G3 400MHz/1MB cache CPU. Supports 512MB of RAM also. Should be
nice
for running OS X. I had a Lombard before and I can tell you OS 10.2
ran dog
low on that, with 382MB RAM. So I will not even attempt OSX on this
little

233 right now.

If you have a cacheless Mainstreet, forget OS X. 10.2 Jaguar is almost
tolerable on the 266 PDQ. If you do have a Series I mobo you might try
OS X with the 292 MHz CPU; could serve you well enough, at least for
now.

Another consideration would be the video memory. Since it is a 14'' it
most
likely has 4MB's but there is the possibility it is only 2. The
tell-tale sign is if it has S-Video or not. If it has S-Video it is
4MB if not it is only 2.

Right. IIRC only the cacheless Mainstreet lacked S-Video output.

Re: iLife and G3 upgrade for WS

2005-09-20 Thread Gene Osburn

I have an old Wallstreet 233/512 cache. I love it cuz it gives 6
hours of
battery life, but it's very slow and too slow for OS X. However I
found a

fairly inexpensive G3 upgrade (Avanti G3 400MHz) that I would like to
install with some more RAM (512MB) and then load OSX. I want to do
all this
so I can run iLife and after looking at the requirements I need OS
10.3.
Will OS 10.3 install on this notebook? Do I need a helper app like
Xpost to

get it running? I heard 10.3 only installs on USB Macs. If it will not
install on this PowerBook then which one will it including iBooks? I
know
this would be the bare minimum for iLife but that's fine, later on I
may get

a faster Mac depending on how much I like the applications themselves.
Thanks for any help regarding this.

You will indeed need XPostFacto to install 10.3 on a Wallstreet. Try
to make

sure that this upgrade does support OS X or you could be disappointed.

I've installed Panther on my WS II 233 via XPF and it's working fine;
currently running Sonnet's G3/500 upgrade with plans to go G4. All of
Wegener's Wallstreet upgrades support OS X, and the G3/400 is hard to
resist at a cost of $99 + shipping. I'm a firm believer in using a G4
for OS X whenever possible, so I'm holding out until I can scrape
together the funds for the Presto! G4/500 -- hoping to bust a move
within two weeks.

I'm not sure how the iLife package will be on a G3 at 400MHz. Some of
the
apps in the iLife package require a G4, more specifically Altivec.
Again,

you don't mention which version of iLife you plan to get, but I would
suggest you check Apple's website for minimum requirements before
taking the

plunge...

I'm with Laurent on this -- rethink your plan to use a G3/400 system
for your iLife apps. Especially if you intend to hold onto your WS for
a good while longer, you may want to seriously consider the G4/500
upgrade. Even though the G3/400 will provide a nice speed bump and
you'll probably be quite happy with it at first, you could wind up
kicking yourself for not going for more horsepower

2005-09-07 Thread Gene Osburn

Ken <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

Have been trying to learn OS X. Installed 10.2.8 on a Wallstreet/300.

that

is supposed to work, but no go. It shows up in the list of PC cards in
the menu bar, but is not shown as a choice in the networking "control

I've successfully used the sourceforge driver in a Wallstreet w/Orinoco
Gold. Try installing again with your Wavelan in the slot. Then shut
down, and restart with the Wavelan still in the slot. Go to Sys
Prefs/Network and check the drop-down menu for Network Port
Configurations; IIRC, there should be a new ethernet port (en1 or en2)
in the list. Select the new port and check that your TCP/IP and
AppleTalk settings are correct.

Re: upgrading my wallstreet

2005-08-31 Thread Gene Osburn

david <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wants to know...

i've been meaning to fix my 250 wallstreet for some time now, i've got
the
sound card/power supply part to replace, i'm getting more ram to
install

(2 x 256), and now i'm thinking... is it worth it to buy one of those
sonnet crescendo upgrades?

owc lists two models, one is a g4/500 upgrade for $350 and the other
is a

g3/500 upgrade for $200.

In general I'd say that spending $350 to upgrade a Wallstreet is a
fool's errand, especially if you're considering spending any more $ on
it for any reason (like adding more RAM). In particular I wouldn't buy
a Sonnet upgrade - purely personal preference, but I believe there's
better quality and value available from other sources.

i'll likely do the processor upgrade, but can anyone tell me, is the g4
worth $150 more than the g3? anyone have any experience or knowledge?

How much more the G4 is worth than the G3 seems a more subjective issue
altogether. If you want to run OS X and/or do much more than light
duty stuff (word processing, web browsing and email, etc.) with your
Wallstreet you'll like the G4 a lot. If I were spending *MY* money on
a WS I'd seriously consider the Avanti G3 you mention below - that
seems an outstanding value.

--

i also see from wegener media:

allegro g3/500 for $270
presto! g4/500 for $220
avanti g3/400 for $99

If you rule out Sonnet and focus on the Avanti G3 or Presto! G4, I
personally would have a *MUCH* harder time making a decision. Trying
to decide whether to sell or upgrade a 233 MHz WS II, I've wrestled
with that one for several weeks now. I just stumbled into a very good
deal on a G4-upgraded Wallstreet, though; so I'm saved from the horns
of that dilemma...;^D

on the allegro page they also say:

"Why not G4?
Good question.. But think about it. The only real advantage of G4 is
the
Altivec processor, which is rarely utilized, except for video
processing.
And the Wallstreet is really not set up for video processing anyway,
so if
you WERE going to do video, you'd save that extra $150, and get a
Pismo.

So, our opinion is, get the Allegro, save your pennies, and get on with
life!"

They have a point, but I think they oversell it a bit. It seems to me
that OS X is much happier when running in a G4 system Saving your
pennies for a Pismo is a very tempting option, though

Best and cheapest don't often coincide in this area. Lots of Orinoco
802.11b cards available at reasonable prices; you can score Silver (64
bit encryption support) or Gold (128 bit encryption support) cards for
$20-30 on ebay. There are at least a half-dozen different "flavors" of
these cards out there: Lucent licensed the technology to several
different mfr's. I found a new stock, rebranded Gold (an Enterasys
Roamabout) on ebay a couple months ago for $24 shipped. Google
"Orinoco" and you'll find a lot to choose from. Those are the "good
enough" choices; worked just fine in my WS PDQ.

The best wi-fi card I've found so far is the MacSense AeroCard Plus.
I'm amazed by the reception - I regularly connect to a coffee house
two-and-a-half blocks away from my apartment! It's a keeper for sure.
Drivers are available for OS 8.6-9.2 and OS X. Tends to cost at least
twice as much as new stock Orinocos; if you find one for under
$50...grab it!

If you don't live within range of an unencrypted wi-fi network that you
can burglarize, you'll need your own access point/router. I use an
original Graphite AirPort Base Station. I see a lot of these for under
$50 on ebay and/or the LEM Swaplist.

All this stuff is 802.11b, which is all most folks would ever need. I
wouldn't consider spending extra $ for 802.11g unless you intend to run
three or more computers simultaneously on your wi-fi network.

Which card brands will work BOTH under OS9 and OSX?

I'm very impressed with the AeroCard Plus from MacSense. Comes with

than the Orinoco Gold in my Wallstreet.

Cleaning PowerBook's innards?

2005-05-31 Thread Gene Osburn
Just scored an entire bottom case for a Wallstreet, for a paint mod
project. It's intact and in good shape, but looks like it's been
sitting on a shelf in a garage or basement for quite a while. Wiping
down the outside was easy enough, but there are a few grimy areas on
the inside (particularly in the case bottom) that need a real cleaning.
Suggestions as to the best cleaning materials to use? Anyone
developed a tried and true process for this kind of cleanup?

Re: PCMCIA card cages

2005-05-30 Thread Gene Osburn

Hey gang,

Can anyone tell me whether I can transplant a 32-bit CardBus PCMCIA
card cage from a G3 'Book into a 2400c?

They are not the same part. AT the very minimum you would need to
make a custom wiring harness, and that assumes the cages use the same
controller chip.

MCE charges $99 for Cardbus-enabling a 2400c. I doubt that any shop
would bother to do it if it's at all complicated or time consuming. I
gotta believe it's something super simple to do with proper tools, and
a card cage transplant sure fills that bill. I have a hunch the card
cages use the same controller; if so, how hard/expensive to make that
harness?

Sometime in the not-too-distant future I'll be disassembling a Comet
for a case mod project. While I have it opened up might as well max
out any and all possible upgrades

Sigh; the wallstreet I use around the office has died. It was plugged

What's the possible causes --- the power regulator board?

First thing to try is PMU reset. Hold down fn+control+shift+power keys
- should get some response/flash from green sleep light. Release the
keys, wait 5 seconds then press power key. Fixes a lot of mysterious

Have you got a cite for this?
I can't see Apple suggesting this and to the best of my
recollection I've seen the opposite. It's inconvenient. The battery
is needed as ballast to keep the computer from tipping over. The
battery acts as a UPS. In working with my used Wallstreet for two
years I left two batteries in all the time and it's still running
great. If the power manager / charger is working right it won't
matter.

Can't remember precisely where I gleaned that particular bit of info.
Read everything I could find online and did a *LOT* of link-hopping.

Seems to me I only need worry about my WS tipping when it's in my lap;
and in that event it's running on battery power, anyway. It's not
nearly so tipsy in desktop use; and I'll prolly have drive modules
installed, which provides at least some ballast. If I need/want extra
ballast in my WS I have two dead batteries which will serve
wonderfully...;^)

Me, I just use the computer and don't worry over much about the battery.

Re: Best strategy to maintain an iBook battery?

2005-05-17 Thread Gene Osburn
Stanton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wants to know:
What's your best idea of the wisest way to maintain the greatest
functionality of an iBook 500 battery?
Are these batteries damaged by allowing them to become completely
discharged?
Are they damaged by leaving them (in the iBook) connected to the AC adapter
even after they're fully recharged?
--
I just bought a new Lithium-Ion battery for my Wallstreet, and from what
research reading I've done on battery care this is how *I'll* take care
of mine:

1) I won't leave the battery in the 'Book while running on AC adapter
power. Apple recommends against this practice for Li-Ion's in its
PowerBooks.

2) I'll "top up" the charge at least a couple of times per month.
3) I'll "exercise" the battery regularly. Running your 'Book on battery
power at least a couple of times per week is actually good for the battery.

4) I'll calibrate the battery every couple of months. Run on battery
power until 'Book gives the low power warning and goes to sleep. Then
immediately plug in AC adapter and allow the battery to fully recharge.

5) I'll wrap it up and store it in the refrigerator (NOT THE FREEZER!)
whenever I leave it idle for more than a few days at a time.

Lithium-Ion batteries don't like to be completely drained; it shortens
their life.

Wallstreet Saga, Part Deux - Woohoo!

2005-05-14 Thread Gene Osburn
My formerly "problem child" Series II Wallstreet is finally a
well-behaved member of the family!
My original assessment of the problem was more accurate than I thought.
It was the Charge Inverter that attaches to the Power Board, which
sits between the battery and expansion bays. I bought what was called a
Power Charge Inverter on ebay and installed it with only partially
successful results: the Wallstreet now saw the battery but wouldn't
charge it. I didn't notice at first that it's a two-piece assembly -
the Power Board and the smaller Charge Inverter piece. My second
attempt with swapped pieces worked! The "old" Power Board with the
"new" Charge Inverter charged my battery enough for 3-1/2 hours of
listening to Ricky Lee Jones and Allman Brotherssweet!

So, you're saying that using the Ethernet port (usually used to hook it to
the cable or DSL modem), you were able to share it with wired computers? I
didn't know you could do that...
--
I also have a Graphite Base Station, and it's not too hard to config as
an Ethernet Bridge using AirPort Admin Utility in OS X. Haven't tried
it yet in OS 9.x but I imagine it's a similarly simple process.

Wallstreet case mods...?

2005-05-07 Thread Gene Osburn
My new-to-me Wallstreet may soon be working properly again (typing this
post with fingers crossed is a [EMAIL PROTECTED]), so now I'm considering ways to
mod it so it really stands out.

Anyone here have experience with disassembling a Wallstreet for a
radical repaint job? Any hints or tips on the process? Any gotchas to
watch out for?

Subject: iTunes craziness...
By the way, where can I find a free update for Mac OS
X 1.0.4? It didn't show up on the software update
option when I did automatic.

The updaters for 10.1 are free downloads, however the *upgrade* from
10.0 to 10.1 isn't.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75295
This is puzzling; IIRC the original upgrade CD's were freely available
at the time.
If you do find the upgrade you need, the 10.1.5 update's here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcomboupdate_10_1_5.html

However, I'd suggest you bypass 10.1 entirely and shop for 10.2 Jaguar
CD's. The Swaplist and/or ebay should yield many copies available at
very reasonable prices. Your iBook will thank you for it, and you'll
have far fewer headaches.

please redefine "Can't use". What do you mean specifically? What happens
or doesn't happen?
--
I was referring to the left bay not seeing the battery. If I only have
one bay I can only use one battery at a time, with no other expansion
bay device or battery.

Actually, I still can't use the one new battery I have, cuz it didn't
charge overnight. I've just about decided to get a power board from
ebay, unless someone has compelling evidence that I've missed a good
possibility as to the source of my charging problem.

Wallstreet saga continues

2005-04-27 Thread Gene Osburn
Think I'm making progress nursing my new-to-me Wallstreet 266 back to
health.

Visited this link on Steve K's suggestion:
http://www.macintouch.com/laptopbatt.html, and the results include:
- Booted into Open Firmware and did a "reset-nvram" return "reset-all"
return. My new battery is now "seen" by the 'Book (in the right bay at
least; no joy in the left). I'm leaving the WS plugged in overnight
with the battery installed to see if it charges.
- Also reset the PMU (again), just for good measure.
- I'm still concerned about the left bay - which is for battery only,
not big enough for expansion drives. Can't use two batteries at once,
nor battery and expansion drive at the same time. Anyone else seen this
kind of thing in their 'Book? Is the power board between the bays the
likely culprit here?
- Turning off the menu bar battery charge icon in the Date & Time
control panel in OS 9 seems to be helping - I couldn't boot into Open
Firmware with it on. I know that's the oddest sounding fix, but one guy
mentioned in the MacInTouch battery discussion that it resolved a
charging problem with his iBook.

Another issue is 256 MB SO-DIMMs. I bought a two-DIMM set specifically
for Wallstreet from Data Memory Systems, and I can't boot with them
installed. I get either the "breaking glass" memory warning sound, or
(after zapping PRAM) a crash with "System Error - bus error" message
just after the OS 9.2 splash screen. Disabling extensions doesn't help,
can't get past that point. Tried starting up with just the lower 256
installed, same results. Reinstalled the two 64's I replaced and we're
back in business.

Any further thoughts about all this, or info about similar experiences
welcome.

You need to be sure that those batteries will charge in another known good
machine, then fault find yours.
--
I'm reasonably sure that a *brand new* battery should charge in its
intended PowerBook without any major glitches in the process. If it
doesn't, that would indicate to me a problem with the 'Book and not the
battery. Also, I just recently learned that the previous owner quit
using the WS about a year ago when her batteries (two) more or less died
on her. Two batteries going belly up in short order...? Sounds like a
charging problem to me. The more I Google and read up on the subject
the more I begin to suspect a faulty Power Charge Inverter. Can anyone
tell me if they think I'm homing in on the problem and its probable fix?

TIA<

Wallstreet battery probs?

2005-04-20 Thread Gene Osburn
Hi, gang. New to the list - just picked up a Series II Wallstreet 266.
It won't start up unless AC adapter's connected. It came with two BTI
batteries but neither one shows any charge lights when installed, and
there's no indication that they're charging. Red X through battery icon
in menu bar, Battery Monitor CS module options greyed out. I've pulled
the batteries and disconnected AC, gonna let it sit a while then check
if it's still holding time; couldn't be as simple as needing new PRAM
battery, could it? Anybody seen similar issues with your WS?
