replace this or do you have to replace the logic board?

Re: RAM DDR2 v DDR PC 333

2005-12-24 Thread Mike Kauspedas
In the beginning DDR2 was not any faster than regular DDR. With improved memory
controllers, latency and the like DDR2 has caught up and now exceeds the
performance found in DDR in select systems. Mostly Pentium 4 systems with
socket 775. DDR2 does provide more bandwidth from the CPU to the memory which
is important. I am not sure how Apple has taken advantage of this, but knowing
them they did it in a good way. Not only that DDR2 is going to be around longer
than DDR.

One other note is that you are going from DDR333 to DDR2 533. Meaning the bus
speed is going to be that much faster. ie the difference between a G3 on a
66MHz bus and 100MHz bus. I would agree with your tech that it is faster.

 Greetings
I bought a refurb 17 inch PowerBook Big AL from Apple and was going
to max out the ram. The sales guy at Apple said the PB was from 3the
newest release, well somewhere there was an error. So it is the model
previous to the newest generation of the AL 17 PowerBook

A ram salesman, with a well known company and the place I buy all my
ram said; that the DDR 2 ram used on the newer models is like 30%
faster then the ram on the previous model of the AL 17 PowerBook.

It seems a little bit of a leap, but 30% and the 13% that is built
into the latest generation would add up to a better machine and worth
giving the $400 savings up in the refurb price and just get new one.

 So the New AL PB 17 takes DDR 2 533- 4200 PC 2-4200 I

The previous generation of AL 17 Powerbooks just until a few months
 ago took DDR PC 333

 So is the DDR2 really 20 to 30% faster DDR PC3 333

 TIA
 Geoffrey

G4 iBook HD Problem

2005-12-08 Thread Mike Vlasman

Hi Listers,

I have enjoyed lurking for the past few weeks and following the
informed discussion that goes on here.

I have a problem with my G4 iBook that I haven't seen discussed yet.

This October the hard-drive started to make a sound that makes me
think that the head has gone into an endless loop because it can't
find a sector. The drive just makes this non-ending swoop, swoop,
swoop sound and the machine freezes. The drive has always been loud,
and it makes this sound whenever it is active, but it usually only
persists for a few seconds. When the hard-drive makes this continuous
seek sound, all I can do is shut down the computer and wait for a
while before rebooting. This happens every time I use the computer
now. Sometimes it takes hours before this situation develops, other
times just minutes.

The drive is the original 30 GB (Apple's measurements, really 28 MB)
Toshiba. It is a SMART drive and does not report any problems. I
first suspected that the problem was overheating, but the temperature
monitor software (by Marcel Bresink) that I installed shows that the
hard-drive would stop responding at temperatures anywhere between 33
and 54 degrees Celsius, so I assume that it's not temperature related.

The only other thing that I can think of that might have something to
do with the problem is that in October I started using a Hawking USB
wireless dongle so I could surf the Internet from the couch. Until
then the computer had always been plugged into the wall (and ethernet
to the Internet) when being used.

My question: does anyone know what is going on? And, if the hard
drive needs replacing, is it difficult to open the machine to do the
replacement? (I have replaced drives in two previous G3 iBooks when
they died-much different deaths, just giving up the ghost in typical
hard-drive death scenarios.)

Specifications of the computer:

12 G4 iBook (from January 2004, I think)
OS: 10.3.9
CPU: 800 MHz
L2 Cache: 256 MB
Bus: 133 MHz
Boot ROM: 4.7.7f0
640 MB DDR SDRAM
Hard-drive: ATA Toshiba MK3021GAS
27.94 GB Journaled HFS+

Thank you very much for any help and comments.

Mike

Re: G4 iBook HD Problem

2005-12-08 Thread Mike Vlasman

Thanks for this, Bruce:

Back up your data; what it sounds like is the drive is going into
thermal recalibration endlessly, meaning it's on the verge of
failing. Having to wait a couple hours for it to cool off to work is
the key symptom.

I have one new thought. Occassionally the Temperature Monitor
software reports that there's no hard-drive sensor. Since the HD
endless spin behaviour happens at various temperatures, could it be
just a loose connection?

Since you've done this before, I'd say go ahead and replace the drive.

PB repairs I can honestly recommend to anyone with reasonable
physical dexterity and attention to detail; iBook repairs I'd only
recommend to people with *proven* physical dexterity, *excellent*
attention to detail, and a lot of confidence in your abilities.

I'd agree that the iBooks are a horror to work on, especially
compared to the simple and beautifully designed PowerBook 100 that I
need to open occassionally to coax back to life. I'd have to disagree
about the other (very positive, mind you) comments and say that in my
case, iBook HD replacement is a matter of good screw drivers and a
very detailed list of steps taken and parts removed.

Regardless of what is the outcome of this, I know what I'm doing over
the holidays. Any recommendations for a 60 - 100 GB drive for the beast?

Thanks, again.

WSII won't see RAM in top slot

2005-11-29 Thread Mike Kauspedas
Well, it does actually see the RAM because it boots to OS X, but here's the
weird thing. Everything is fine and I see the apple and the spinning lines,
then the screen goes really dark, like the backlight shuts off. I can barely
see what's on it. If I try and login it throws back an error saying it can't
proceed and goes tot he login screen. If I let it sit long enough the screen
eventually brightens again. The screen darkens whether the RAM is in the top or
bottom slot. If the RAM is in the bottom slot it does login fine. I have tried
resetting the pram. I have tried a DIMM I know is working on the top slot. I
was able to boot, but it only sees the memory in the bottom slot, well, it says
it has 128MB's. I have 10.2.8 and system profiler doesn't show the RAM slots.
I've tried with 1 128MB, 2 128MB's, a 128 and a 64MB. I have a 300MHz G3 67MHz
bus with 1MB cache. It does read that correctly. Does anyone have any
suggestions as to how to troubleshoot/proceed? Thanks!

Yes, I have run Duos, Wallstreets, and Lombards from
the Duo power adapter. The only problem I have found
is the Duo P/S does not have as high a current
output, so it may not charge your battery while the

Re: DHCP problems

2005-10-17 Thread Mike Kauspedas

I had that happen to the router/firewall we use on our home network -
before I did anything, I called tech support who confirmed what I
wanted to do: held in the reset button for about 30 sec. to reset the
router. Since the login/password info our DSL service needed was in
NVRAM, that wasn't affected, but it did reset the router to start it's
address sequences over again. From what tech told me, it's something
we'll need to do about every 2 years or so. :)

Later..Howard

sorry, I haven't been following the entire thread. What about assigning
IP addresses instead of DHCP? All you would have to do is give each
computer a valid IP on the same subnet.

OS X cd jut spins

2005-09-23 Thread Mike
Just tried installing OS 10.2 on my old WSII. It boots, restarts, then boots
off the CD. When the CD pops up the little broken circle at the bottom just
spins, like a broken beach ball. It never stops spinning either, os it never
locks up, but I can't hear the CD-ROM doing anything. Making it's little
whirls and woozles as it usually does when loading off the CD. I'm not sure
if anyone has ran into this before. Any ideas? Reset pram maybe?

An additional question also, is it possible to force Outlook Express to
include my sig every time I make an email. Right now I have to click on
signatures and then mine, kind of annoying. Thanks!

Re: OS X cd jut spins

2005-09-23 Thread Mike Kauspedas
How long have you let it run? I did experience this a few times. It seems
that the CDs are not always burned optimally resulting in a lot of whirling
and shuffling back and forth as if the drive has to go to various places on
the CD to find what it's looking for. I remember taking 30 to 40 seconds
before something would finally load. So, if you didn't wait that long, you
 might want to try again.

Otherwise, you might want to check if you can boot another Mac from that CD,
 just in case...

30-40 seconds would be grand, I let mine sit there for over 5 minutes.

Spinning OS X saga continues

2005-09-23 Thread Mike Kauspedas
I have gotten past the spinning OS X screen and now I am at the Processing
Essential System Software screen. It's said there are 13 minutes left for the
past half hour. Mouse still moves, I cna even click on stuff. Like show log,
which in turns shows the spinning beach ball, eventually that goes away and I
can click to expand the installation log, but that makes another spinning beach
ball. This is all on a Wallstreet II.

Faster machine with more RAM??? ;)

 Steve

What? But I made this one myself ... :( Maybe painting it orange will help. New
problem now. The install ran through, it rebooted, now it blinks the question'd
mark folder and the hard drive spins up and down about 10 times then it shuts
off. Or it will bott off CD if I leave the disk in there. I bet the next step
is the LCD spinning around 360 degrees and spewing of screws.

powersupply, clear display and is in good overall condition.

I am typing this on a 233MHz/512KB cache model with a 14'' screen. I am
pretty sure that the 14'' models did not come on the 233MHz cacheless. I'm
not sure because I built mine from a box of parts and I only had the one
WSII CPU to use. So I used a WSII mobo, WSII 233 CPU and managed to scrap
together a nice little machine. I get 6 hours off the dual batteries, 6
hours use! I get 2 weeks plus on standby as I recently tested.

Although it seems nothing in Apple i cheap I found this upgrade reasonable.
http://www.wegenermedia.com/wllst400.htm
Its a G3 400MHz/1MB cache CPU. Supports 512MB of RAM also. Should be nice
for running OS X. I had a Lombard before and I can tell you OS 10.2 ran dog
low on that, with 382MB RAM. So I will not even attempt OSX on this little
233 right now.

Of course you'll want a bigger HD also but ince the transfer rate is slow I
wouldn't recommend paying extra for a 7200, the 4200/5400 would be fine.
Also be careful of ATA6 HD's as they appear to not work in these old PB
models.

Another consideration would be the video memory. Since it is a 14'' it mot
likely has 4MB's but there is the possibility it is only 2. The tell-tale
sign is if it has S-Video or not. If it has S-Video it is 4MB if not it is
only 2.

If you are interested I have some WSII mobo's but no CPU's if you would like
to find or buy that upgrade and go that route.

I got mine extremely cheap and I fairly impressed with the little guy but it
is very slow and old. It's worth it to m e to upgrade it since my initial
cost was so low, but if I were buying one off eBay I'd save my money and go
for an iBook snow or a faster PB, say a G3 400 or better. OS X will run a
lot better and the upgrade path seems to be longer.

iLife and G3 upgrade for WS

2005-09-20 Thread Mike K
I have an old Wallstreet 233/512 cache. I love it cuz it gives 6 hours of
battery life, but it's very slow and too slow for OS X. However I found a
fairly inexpensive G3 upgrade (Avanti G3 400MHz) that I would like to
install with some more RAM (512MB) and then load OSX. I want to do all this
so I can run iLife and after looking at the requirements I need OS 10.3.
Will OS 10.3 install on this notebook? Do I need a helper app like Xpost to
get it running? I heard 10.3 only installs on USB Macs. If it will not
install on this PowerBook then which one will it including iBooks? I know
this would be the bare minimum for iLife but that's fine, later on I may get
a faster Mac depending on how much I like the applications themselves.
Thanks for any help regarding this.

Re: iLife and G3 upgrade for WS

2005-09-20 Thread Mike Kauspedas
You will indeed need XPostFacto to install 10.3 on a Wallstreet. Try to make
sure that this upgrade does support OS X or you could be disappointed.

I'm not sure how the iLife package will be on a G3 at 400MHz. Some of the
apps in the iLife package require a G4, more specifically Altivec. Again,
you don't mention which version of iLife you plan to get, but I would
suggest you check Apple's website for minimum requirements before taking the
 plunge...

 -Laurent.

I was looking at iLife05.

iLife '05 System Requirements

* Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3 (400MHz or faster), G4, or G5
processor
o 600MHz G3 or faster required for GarageBand
o G4 or G5 required for GarageBand software instruments and advanced
photo editing in iPhoto 5
o 733MHz G4 or faster required for iDVD
o 1GHz G4 or faster required to use HD features of iMovie HD
* 256MB of physical RAM (512MB recommended)
o 512MB RAM required to use HD features of iMovie HD
* Mac OS X v10.3.4 or later
o Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later required to use HD features of iMovie HD
o Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later required to work with RAW photos (iPhoto
5)

It wouldn't run too well on that G3 400, but it would run most of the stuff. I
will probably go with a less expensive and older version of iLife though as the
requirements are less. I found some iLife 03 for $10 or less online. I really
want to try out Garage Band and iMovie the most.

the requirements are less. I found some iLife 03 for $10 or less online. I
really want to try out Garage Band and iMovie the most.

It looks like I should just put the money towards a faster 'Mactop'. So new

Mactops will support the batteries from my WSII? Thanks!

The Sims on WSII

2005-09-02 Thread Mike K
I installed the Sims on OS9.2.2 (the original Sims) and I'm trying to play
it. It starts up, asks for a resolution, I click play and immediately get
Error code = 17. I installed the latest update, restarted, tried 1024x768
and 800x600, etc. Anyone gotten The Sims to run on OS9.2.2 before? It
installs fine so it must be compatible. Thanks!

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-17 Thread Mike K
Microsoft didn't have to work too hard. How many people continue to
buy junk automobiles that last 2 or 3 years and are worth very little
if anything by the time they are paid off. I include most American
made cars in that group of junk Same as junk peecees. It's become a
throw-away society unfortunately. Most people expect and embrace
planned obsolescence in this country.

Its not that American cars are junk it's that a lot of people don't know how
to take care of them. Change the oil and perform regular maintenance and
200k + miles is not a problem. I've had several American cars last this
long, foreign too. Working on 201k on a Toyota and has a Pontiac Bonneville
with 214k on it before I traded it.

PC's and Macs become obsolete because of advances in technology and software
requirements, not because people throw them away.

Actually, NBC only reported notebook computers and didn't mention
 iBooks or Apple at all.

 Later..Howard

CNN's site said the same thing Notebooks. I don't think it would
be good for Apple if they used the name. I doubt the reporters even
knew what they were selling.

A LOT of people don't know what an iBook is, but a lot of people know what a
notebook is.

Just defending the American public and fighting hate.

Want to trade Mac for iBook/Powerbook

2005-07-26 Thread Mike
I posted this to the swap list also but trying to gauge interest.

I would like to trade the following Blue n White G3 for a working OSX
capable iBook or Powerbook. I'll consider all offers for trade, but I am not
interested in money right now. I would like to get at least a 400MHz G3 with
256MB's of RAM, but that is negotiable. More RAM over CPU or vice versa.
Most important to me is CPU. I will even consider a notebook with no RAM if
the CPU is good. I will also consider stripped but working notebooks with
just the CPU and CD-ROM drive. Battery life would be nice, but not
necessary. WiFi is not important nor is the OS or hard drive size.

I have:
Blue n White G3
G3 500MHz
384MB RAM (1 128MB and 1 256MB)
120GB Maxtor ATA133 HD
Original Rage 128 PCI graphics card
Liteon CDRW 52x24x52 (boots and burns fine) Zip 100
2 firewire
2 USB
No modem
10/100 NIC

I will also include a maybe working G4 400MHz + Sawtooth mobo. It should
work in this Mac but I was unable to get it working.

I can load OS 10.2.8 and also OS 9.2.2 if needed. I have an original OS
9.0.4 restore CD and also original OS 10.2 CD's but these will be negotiated
depending on the notebook specs.

I have absolutely no problem with this machine. I originally traded a dual
P3 PC for it locally and have had it for 4 months. The Mac sits now because
I'd rather use a notebook. I love to write and love to write on Macs and
have been using my Wallstreet more now and before that my PC notebook lol.
So the PowerMac has been mainly an mp3 server.

Case is in decent shape with a few scratches and the hinge to open the side
is a little stiff but works.

Pics can be provided also!

Again this is all negotiable. I just want an OSX capable notebook. I also
have a good AMD based custom PC (very nice looking) if someone is interested
in that. I can provide specs.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Can a WS recognize a DVD disk

I made the DVD on a DVD-R/VCR combo.

I guess now neither of my WS drives (internal CD-ROM or external

at least recognize the disk in some way so I could duplicate it with

I responded--

Sorry for all the confusion, only DVD drives will recognize a DVD

Re: What laptop is it?

2005-07-22 Thread Mike
It's a wallstreet. But you can tell if it's a I or II by going to system
profiler and finding out if it has cache memory or not. The original
wallstreets had a 233MHz model with no cahce, the Wallstreet II has a 233MHz
model with cache. The other difference between the 2 WS's is that the
original had a Rage LT chip and the second has a Rage LT Pro chip for video,
also found in system profiler. I just got a box full of parts and after some
emailing to this list I found out the major differences between the two
models.

Hi Folks,

Can anyone identify this laptop I please?

Its a G3 PowerBook, one that looks like a Pismo, but its not, its
much thicker than a Pismo. It has a black keyboard, and its specs
are 233MHz, 2Gb HD, 32Mb RAM, although I have upgraded it to 256Mb.

I am guessing its a Lombard, but I just want to check. I need to know
as I am looking for a few parts for it. I need the two rubber
stoppers at the top of the inside of the screen, a new outer LCD case
and a CD-ROM or DVD drive - so if anyone has any spare in the UK, let
me know!

Thanks,

Andrew McCall

Wallstreet upgrades

2005-07-22 Thread Mike
I finally got one of my powerbooks working. I traded an older iMac for a box
of powerbooks and parts in unknown condition. I managed to get this out of
it so far:

Wallstreet rev I
250MHz
98MB
2GB
14
2MB VRAM
2 working batteries, testing a 3rd
Working CD-ROM

I've drawn up a few plans for it. First it's going to get a new paint job,
orange with black trim :) But if I'm going to make it look pretty I need to
make it faster.

I have enough parts for maybe 2 more Wallstreet 2's if I can get CPU's for
them. I want to get some other upgrades that would cross over between the
two. Specifically hard drive, ram, wireless card, CPU, and USB.

I have an idea of what to get but don't know where to start. Any suggestions
on what parts to get, where to look, etc would be great. I'm looking for
cheap stuff!

Thanks for all the help!

Re: fn key to switch displays?

2005-07-21 Thread Mike
Mike,

Are you using a Pismo? If so, you can simply plug in a USB mouse and
USB keyboard, and with the external monitor connected, boot the Pismo
using the USB devices with it closed. Hope this helps,

Re: PB G3 power prob

2005-07-20 Thread Mike
Does the CPU card in question have both L2 chips next to the CPU, or
one cache chip on the front of the card, and one on the backside ?

Mad Dog

Both are next to the CPU, with the label U3 and U2 above them. Both have
Motorola markings on them. There are 4 SEC chips that look like RAM/Cache
that sit underneath the top RAM slot on the card.

Wallstreet probs

2005-07-20 Thread Mike
Just to clarify:

Wallstreet II motherboards had a Rage LT chip on the bottom? That's how I
tell the difference?

My CPU's are labeled, one is a 233MHz, no cache, found some pics on the web,
and the other is a 292MHz. ALL the mobo's I have have the LT chip on the
bottom. What's weird is a couple of the powerbooks had these CPU's in them
with the mobo with the LT chip. Maybe they were replaced with the wrong ones
or something.

So how do I know for sure if it is a Wallstreet II mobo or not? Or CPU for
that matter if its not labeled? Is there a website? Thanks!

Many of the later Wallstreet logic boards had PDQ on that s/n, otherwise

my pb dongs! but nothing else

2005-07-20 Thread Mike
Got a WS 1 mobo with a 292MHz CPU, I checked the bottom and made sure it was
a Rage LT (not a Pro) and the CPU is labeled as a 292MHz. I hooked
everything up and when I plug the AC in it powers on, LED lights up, FAN
spins, then it shuts down. Press the power button it dongs but NO power LED
and no video. The CPU heatsink heats up though so I know its on.

I have everything hooked up but the following:

Hard drive, keyboard, modem

The motherboard also has no s-vide slot. I have a 13.3 inch monitor hooked
up.

Thanks for all the help, I finally figured out the difference between ws 1
and ws 2 CPU's and mobos :)

Re: my pb dongs! but nothing else

2005-07-20 Thread Mike
Have you tried the video out (VGA) ? COuld be a bad cable connection
from the LCD to motherboard.

Also, if you plug a HD in, does it spin up ?

Also, one thing comes to mind: the unit with no S-video only has 2
megs of VRAM, which might not drive the 13.3 screen. Try swapping
another screen, or use the external video.

Mad Dog

I've actually had an external monitor hooked up this whole time for that
very reason. It ended up simulcasting on both.

I got it to work! But it won't work with the keyboard. If I hook one of the
three up it won't power on, without the keyboard hooked up it works fine.
This is driving the 14 LCD at 1024x768, haven't checked the VRAM tho.

I'm gonna try different top plastics and see if that fixes it. Got to tear
it down again though.

Re: PB G3 power prob

2005-07-19 Thread Mike Kauspedas
If it boot chimes and the HD seems to be working, but you get no
video, this most likely means you have a Wallstreet 1 CPU (233/no L2,
250, 292 MHz) on a Wallstreet2 motherboard (Rage Pro LT video
 chipset).

I have a 292 and 233, but the one that isn't labeled is this:

ck8241xxbkeaw (kinda hard to read so I may have messed a few)

the mobo does have the Rgae LT Pro chip on it.

Not necessarily, the Belkin card in the red/gray box
should have the broadcom chipset and will work with
airport drivers. However the Belkin card in the
white/gray box was in my case, a Ralink Technologies

drivers, however airport drivers will not work.

Been there tried that, Mike

So, that means that the great deal I just got on
 E-bay for a new
 Belkin PCICMA card and
router that is listed at the Belkin site as working
 with OS 10.2.6 and
airport 3.0.4, will just be going back on E-bay?

 Just a thought. Mike

Let me explain the OS9 issue. I installed it over

9.1 CD which came with the first release of OX and
 it wouldn't boot
either, is that indicative of anything? I installed
 OS9, it didn't work

I am at now, so there is no OS9 on it now.

OK I will install RAM and let you know, this is

Re: USB PC Card on Wallstreet

2005-01-11 Thread Mike Turner
On 11/1/05 2:04 am, Nils Mueller-Scheessel [EMAIL PROTECTED]
said:

I am desperately trying to get a Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Notebook
Card running with by Wallstreet (2nd revision, 233 MHz, upgraded to
466 MHz, 256 MB RAM). The Belkin-Card is supposed to run with OS 8.6
to X, but my PB always freezes in short time when I put it in the PC
card-Slot. It is recognized in the System Profiler, however. I have
installed OS 9.1, 9.2.2, the USB-Card-Support 1.4.1 - to no avail.
Unfortunately, installing OS X is not an option, as my processor
upgrade refuses to work with it (the processor is not the culprit,
however, as the problem with the USB-card persists when using the old
(very sloow) processor).

I have no idea if this is related or not, but my OrangeLink Firewire
CadBus Card does not work, too (though it should as well). It is not
even recognized in the System Profiler.

Nils

Seems almost everyone, including me, gets caught by this. Symptoms - The
WallStreet works fine with a USB card whilst on mains power but freezes
up under battery power.

The solution is to turn off Allow processor cycling under Settings for
Battery, in Control Panels, Energy Saver, Advanced Settings. Now the USB
card should work fine. At least it did for me.

  Thanks Laurent,

I have tried my another 8.6 CD that I used for my
 faithful and heavy G3

 with the beige... still
  defauts to 9.2

Like I said I have used the CD-ROM to load the

Well, forget about OpenFirmware password. I just
 checked on the Apple web

 G3 FireWire (Pismo) and
 up.

So, although you were able to load the Latin Vocab

still guess that there is a problem with the CD-ROM

that not the same sectors on a CD are read whether
 you're accessing data
from it or booting from it.

Are you getting the same result if you try to boot

 I'm not sure that you
would be able to boot from 8.5 on a Lombard. Maybe
 you can, I'm not sure.
But if you get exactly the same problem, then there
 is something wrong about
 the drive.

Now, since this thread has been going on for some
time now, I'm not sure if
you tried this or not, but have you tried setting up
 the startup disk after
booting in OS X? Did that work at all? I'm getting
 low on ideas...

I'm coming into this discussion late has anyone
brought up the possibility of a non apple cd drive
being not bootable?

  I got a Belkin F5D7010 802.11g PC card that's

I haven't checked any PC card in my PowerBook, so I

That being said, I would think that your computer is
 working fine since it
recognizes all other types of cards. I would imagine
 that the card is also
working fine since it seems to communicate with the
 system correctly.

So, that leaves us with the incompatible chipset. I
 thought that someone
posted this week about a similar problem, where they
 bought a Belkin

 got a revision which used
a different chipset, thus making the card
 incompatible without a 3rd party

I had previously posted this problem and it appears
Belkin did change chipsets. You can go to Ralink's
website and get drivers for it, however it will not
work with airport drivers. Unfortunatley Belkins
support techs know nothing about this and were rude in
trying to help me solve this problem, they claim they
are still Broadcom chipsets.

Google Ralink Technologies RT2500. What do you know
Belkin changed the chipset unbeknown to the tech I

work, however my first objective was to be able to use
airport drivers and support programs. I guess I call
Belkin again as they claim airport compatibility.

Following Mikael's post about shutting down first, I tried it and Open

Re: Adding RAM to WS II

2004-05-17 Thread Mike Kauspedas
You're right, it brings back to memory all that A+ stuff I learned...
they don't teach you a whole lot on how Macs work though, that was
disappointing because its real interesting. Know any good links for how
the hardware in a Mac works? What kind of controller does the
motherboard use to access memory, does it address the same way a PC
does? North-bridge/south-bridge, are these relevant? Curious more than
anything else, no explanation needed, just a link, but perhaps other
posters would like to know if someone has the time. Thanks!

Mike
On Thursday, May 13, 2004, at 08:37 PM, Nils wrote:
You guys are getting closer..
There are 2 issues here. One at a time.
First, a WallStreet II runs a 66MHz System Bus. That means that you
can run
PC66, PC100 or PC133 memory. The rating shows the speed that the memory
has been certified to run at.

A piece of PC66 memory run on a 100MHz system but _might_ work. But
when it
was tested at the factory, they guarantee that it will run correctly
and
error free at 66MHz.

The answer is, get whatever you want. PC66, PC100 or PC133 will work
correctly.

Second, as for the chip density. Yes, this is an issue. And is often
not on
a sticker attached to the memory module.

Here is an example...
If you had a 168pin (Dual In-Memory Module), it has 4 chips and the
label
says 8Mx32. It would break down like this...

   Chip Density :
   8 (chip depth in millions) x 32 b (chip width in bits) = 256
Megabit (Mb)

   256 Megabit (Mb) x 4 (number of chips) = 1024 Megabit (Mb)
   Module Density :
   1024 Megabit (Mb) / 8 b (bits per byte) = 128 MegaByte (MB)
When the motherboard for the WSII was designed, the memory controller
used
knew about different sizes of memory chips available at the time of
production.
So the sizes that it knew, it is able to address correctly.

Now, since I don't have any 256MB modules in my WS right now, I can't
tell
you this for sure. But I'm going to take a guess..

I'm thinking that the memory controller doesn't know how to address a
memory
chip with a depth greater than 8 million bits.

So it might be able to correctly access an 8Mx32 chip, but not a
16Mx16 chip.
Both of those sizes are 256Mbit, but if the controller doesn't
understand how
to read a chip depth greater than 8 million bits, it will address the
memory
as an 8Mx16.

If I'm right. This should explain why some 256MB modules show up as
128MB
on older laptops..

   Chip Density :
   8 (chip depth in millions) x 16 b (chip width in bits) = 128
Megabit (Mb)

   128 Megabit (Mb) x 8 (number of chips) = 1024 Megabit (Mb)
   Module Density :
   1024 Megabit (Mb) / 8 b (bits per byte) = 128 MegaByte (MB)
So, what you will want to look for is a 256MB module with 8Mx32 chips.
I REALLY hope I'm right. It'd suck if I did all this reading/math to
find out
that I'm way off base.

Btw, this page is where I found all the relevant information.

Good morning All, I live in the Seattle area and we have all of the
electronic and office big box stores, independent Apple dealers, and
at
least two Apple Stores. I am getting ready to go home wireless with
my
Pismo, and in reading the Sunday paper and all of the ads, my
question
is this; why do I need Airport, when there are several name brand
WiFi
routers on sale for less than $100.00? Aside from Apple loyalty, and
the cool factor, which may be negligent as the router is often in a
place where the casual visitor to your home may not see it and
therefor
not be impressed by your cool factor, is there a compelling
technical
factor for using an Airport over any of the other good products on the
market ? I have been a rabid Mac user since 1985 and love the look
and feel of the products and how they work, and work, and work!
Thanks Jim.
No compelling tech factor in my book. Go Linksys. Cheap, stackable,
fast
and reliable.

Re: Adding RAM to WS II

Its a density problem. The WS will read 128MB PC133 as long as the
density matches, you need 6 layer memory for it to work right. I
think... thats how it works with older PC's...

Ask them for PC66 chips. You have more chance that it would work,

Sorry, no further suggestion!

I've only been half paying attention to this thread, so I'm sorry if
this has already been addressed, but does the wallstreet have
problems with pc100 and 133 or is it the issue of density. The Beige
g3s have the same problem. I had a 256mb chip with two memory chips
on the memory card and I ran into the half recognize problem. I
bought a memory card from owc which had 8 chips on either side of the
card and it worked fine. I think it was pc100, although I'm not for
sure. And I think the early iMacs (the tray loaders) had the same
problem. They take the same chips as the Wallstreets. I just bought
a low profile for the lower slot on my iMac and it came with 8 chips
on each side of the card. It recognized it no problem. It was pc100.

Cheapest yet still effective method: Eyeglass cleaner and microfiber

And this is really safe for the screen itself? Also for the plastics?
You

I'm very much in favour of working low cost methods, but I'd like to

If I now only could find a way to ink refill my Lexmark.

I've used Office on new machines and old machines and never had a
single problem. We've got it loaded on 30 eMacs here at the school I
work for and all of them run flawlessly. The PC's with office and win98
lock up all the time, but the Macs run fine. Office 2001 runs great too

Right on, when was the last time Apple gave something similar to
Microsoft's TS2 seminars. They teach you how to use their products and
then give you a free copy. Not every TS2 is the same, but since I
started attending 2 years ago I've gotten Windows 2000 SBS, Office XP,
Windows XP pro, Windows Server 2003, and numerous other MS apps. All of
these were full versions with no trial period.
To echo this mac users point, both are great companies and I feel both
are here to stay. I love my Mactop (PB G3) and wouldn't trade it for
the world, but in defense of MS they offer so much support to the
technical community that then passes on to the consumer.
If anyone knows of free Mac seminars I would love to know! Seriously,
that isn't sarcasm.

Re: Micro$oft on the Mac

2004-04-30 Thread Mike Kauspedas
hey, I just checked out their website and must retot my previous
argument. They do have some cool seminars, a mac OS X server seminar
would be nice, but I can live with iMovie and iDVD guide. Plus multiple
others. I live near Denver, so that is what I checked out. I plan on
attending one of these in the next week. Thanks again!

Apple offers free seminars, both live and online (for those of us

offer free seminars. The Apple store in Houston seems to have
something going on all seven days of the week. Apple also offers a
summer college for children. And sometimes they even show up at
local user group meetings and offer workshops.
Go to the Apple website and type in 'Free Seminars' in the

Re: Micro$lime vs. Apple

2004-04-30 Thread Mike Kauspedas
Oh common, what company isn't trying to make a $buck$. Hell what man
for that matter? MS, Apple, Coke, Haliburton, they're all the same,
they formed a company around making people rich. And if I were to start
a company it would be to make $$. Its that simple.

Good morning, I find the spelling of Microsoft with a $ to be
completely disingenuous..if you had been smart enough to buy,
steal
or create DOS you would be rich too. Do you believe Apple products
are
cheap, or Apple is not in the business to make money? I have been a
Mac user since 1985 and have never worked in a Mac environment, but I
have worked all of my IT career in the DOS and Windows world.all
versions of Windows. Perhaps there is a reason that everyone in your
office use MS products, 99% of the time they just work!!!most
folks
work is not in computers, they use computers to do their job and must
have something that works. Have you considered that perhaps the
reason
your machine crashes is due to poor application installation, systems
and applications not being up to date, poor maintenance, and or just
bad user practices? Like it or not Microsoft is here and is a leader
and in some cases the standard. If you don't like Microsoft products
THEN DON'T USE THEM and stop bitching! No I own no MS or Apple stock
and do not work for either excellent company. Sincerely, Jim Scolman.
Wrong. And I find the fact that you are wrong disingenous. How
dare you
be wrong. Stop being wrong.

M$ designs schemes around making money FIRST. I know plenty of
$ofties.
Confirmed down the line. Not bad in and of itself, but easily a
reason many
like to use the $ sign instead of s. Besides, there is no S in Apple.
 We
could write $napple, but wait...wrong company. $apple? No...

Apple designs for elegance first. Except with the guts of the G3 Snow
iBooks. There they designed with $ in mind. Call them $ighBooks. And
before you blast me again, iBook fans, just search the Apple boards.
Many
many complaints just keep on piling up.

The Last Word.

Re: mac osx equivalent to hibernate?

2004-04-29 Thread Mike Kauspedas
I've done the same thing with batteries. I've left my laptop in sleep
for an entire day and it used 2% of the battery, no joke. Plus its
almost instant on, so I don't have to wait for data to transfer from
hard drive back to RAM like in a Wintop. I prefer the sleep option over
a hibernate one.

I've been using sleep between work and home for a year now on my 17
PowerBook. Removing the battery will kill sleep mode, but for
transporting between work and home it's perfect. All I do is open the
machine up, choose a different Location out of the Apple menu, and
I'm on my wireless network and surfing away.
I too have been using sleep mode with my PowerBooks since 1998
(Wallstreet II, now 15 Titanium). Works great, you can leave it for
an extended period of time no sweat. Also, sleep mode is handy for
swapping batteries. If you do it quickly (less than 60 seconds I
think but don't quote me on it) you can swap out a discharged battery
for a full-charged one. I use this when traveling on airplanes and
want to finish watching a DVD. Usually I can't make it all the way
through a movie on one battery. I simply put it to sleep, swap out
the battery and start it back up. Works like a champ.

Do I have any reason to expect these 2 work less well with CPU upgrade?

2004-04-20 Thread Mike Kauspedas
Simplified:
HD speed and access improve speed (RAID, SCSI, SATA RAID)
Amount of RAM (more you have the more the OS can use as cache instead
of using the slower hard drive)
CPU Speed
system Bus Speed
Amount of cache memory on CPU (for intensive tasks, cache stores
commands)

This goes for PC's and Macs. What am I forgetting?

Does that help?
Yup.

The overall speed of a system is dependent on many different factors,

If you use a magnet close to your hard drive you are asking to loose
all your data. I don't care what other people have done, drives work
off magnetic polarity, if you reverse it with a magnet, viola your data

including the original 4900RPM 8GB IBM, 10,20, and now 30GB Toshiba

You could always mod the book and extend and shorten in areas you need,
or make a whole new case out of wood! Or a Nintendo, briefcase,
bananas! :)

Re: Wallstreet going blank

2004-04-15 Thread Mike Kauspedas
This going to sound stupid, but my Wallstreet only wakes up when I hit
the space bar. You might want to try that. I've been trying to figure
what kind of RAM to put in this Wallstreet to get 512MB. What are you
using? PC100? PC133? Do you know what the latency is? (It should have a
CL and then a number on the chip) Thanks,

Mike

When it does this, I can't get it to come back on (the screen), but I

to do
a forced reset, but today I pressed the power button once, heard the
hard
drive rattle, so I was assuming it was the 'are you sure you want to
shutdown' message, hit the left arrow key and then enter and it did
in
fact shut down, so at least I don't have to hard reset it anymore.

Anyway, does anyone know what causes this, for the screen to just go
blank
and not come back? After it reboots, it's fine. But it seems to do
this
about every other day and is kind of annoying. Sometimes it's after I
have
closed it and it goes to sleep, then later I will open it up, hit the
spacebar and nothing...sometimes it works fine and wakes up.

Today, I had just woken it up from sleep, looked away for a minute,
looked
back and it was blank again...hit the spacebar, nothing.

Any ideas or suggestions? I'm running OS X.2.8. With 512Mb RAM.

Gotta Wallstreet, now what?

2004-04-13 Thread Mike Kauspedas
Ok, so I got this cool little Powerbook G3:
Wallstreet PB G3 Series II
300MHz 1MB 66MHz bus
256MB RAM
CD-ROM (no DVD...odd)
etc...
I got it running OS X, but I'm going to replace the hard drive with
something faster. I already added the 256MB in but can't get 512MB to
work. Does anyone know some links or specifics on how to accomplish
that feat? IE, what kind of RAM is required? Also, does anyone know any
tweaks to speeding up OS X on it? Aside from more RAM, CPU, etc. I did
the thousand colors deal, it helped a little tiny almost unnoticeable
bit. Any other suggestions, feeling on these little guys? Any fixes to
watch for? Possible over-clocking? Any general information is
appreciated. thanks

-Mike

Under Network ( System Preferences) -Ethernet adapter
Under TC/IP Setup, Configure-Using DCHP (do not put in ip address let
Server do that)
Under System Preferences, Wireless Config - Put in name of network ,
then hit Apply Now to activate. You should see a signal strength on
the display.

The WaveLAN cards will work with OS 9 Airport software, however you
need outside drivers for OSX.

I tried it in OS X but forgot that I needed drivers and I also forgot
I
could have restarted in 9 to try it :-/

Re: cooling down Lombard?

2004-02-19 Thread Mike McGinnis
Andrew,
 I use Thermograph on OS9. http://www.kezer.net/thermograph.html . I
have also tone the thermal paste, I don't know for sure how much good
it did as my processor had already lost its L2 cache, it did seem to
drop the temperature about 10-15 degrees F.

Is there any reason not to just go ahead and add the thermal paste to
my CPU? It doesn't seem to difficult and it has to help.
Any recommendation for the paste itself?

Thanks

Re: Lombard ram again

2004-02-14 Thread Mike McGinnis
Hi Vicky,
I finally fired up my Lombards to check the temperature. It runs about
63'c for light work to 75'c for processor intensive work. With mine I
removed the heat-sink from the top of the processor and put on new
thermal grease. It had already fried the L2 Cache so I felt I couldn't
do any more harm. It had been running as high as 87c prior to the new
thermal grease. My second Lombard Ran 59'c with processor intensive
work. It's L2 is still working fine and I haven't felt the need to put
thermal grease on it.

Re: PRAM/Backup battery in WallStreet - Battery Reset

For sure, that's the first thing to do if you haven't had it on
external power for an extended period lately.

As we are talking WallStreets here, don't forget the Apple Battery Reset
application (sorry, don't have the link handy).

This application has revived my WallStreet battery several times, when I
might otherwise have assumed the battery was dead (no longer holding any
charge).

I know that a few times I have run out of battery power completely and
probably the PRAM/backup battery has run out as well. The main battery
refuses to recharge until it is reset by Battery Reset. Maybe a sign of a
faulty power manager board (also quite common, it seems).

Worth a shot...
