Re: Users, Partitions, and Panther Question

2004-03-02 Thread Phil Burk
Mark,

A quick question: do you want one partition devoted solely to Users?
I mean, are you seeking to get a Users volume mounted on the desktop
like Macintosh HD or whatever your boot volume is named? I'm
assuming that you do.

You need to use /etc/fstab which became support in Jag. Should still
work. Let me know if you need the dirty details. And yes, you'll
still need to use NetInfo to do it properly.

Hi guys.

I just installed Panther in the first 6GB of hard drive space and the

idea how to set up MacOS X to use the entire partition to put user
folders into it and when I make new accounts it would create the user
space in the second partition. I've been doing it the dirty way and
using Net info for the two users I've made so far. So now, in
netinfo, the I changed home from '/Users/username' to
/Volumes/volumename/username'. Ideally, I'd like to see volumename
mounted at root like a DVD or a floppy would. So, the file path would
like like this... '/volumename'. Any helpful advise? Thanks.

any way to repartition, without completely wiping the drive? Assuming
not, can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy off everything, repartition

John,

There is no easy way of repartitioning a drive without risking data
loss. It can be done but I wouldn't recommend it.

Use CCC to copy the data you want and then repartition it.

Re: strategy for repartitioning drive

2004-03-02 Thread Phil Burk
John,

A few thoughts. First of all, you have OS 9 on this machine, why not
use SCSI disk mode? This would allow you to make your powerbook into a
large external hard drive from which you could then back your stuff
off. (really bad grammar there...) The do require a special SCSI
adapter - a HDI SCSI/Dock adapter specifically for this purpose.

If you don't have access to one of those you could always use a
firewire PCMCIA/PC Card and mount an external FireWire drive or
computer in FW Target disk mode.

Much faster than 10Mbit.

And yes, you can run CCC to copy the startup volume to another drive.
But as far as I know CCC DOESN'T WORK OVER A NETWORK CONNECTION. The
drives need to be mounted locally. So the above two options are your
best bet.

On Mar 2, 2004, at 6:25 PM, John Slavin wrote:

That's what I was afraid of. So now I'm wondering how to get all this

going to take a while via 10T ethernet or wireless ethernet. Can I
copy the startup partition with it running from the same startup
partition? Then I'm thinking, how can get all this stuff back on
there when the wallstreet will have empty drive. What about using
bootcd to create bootable cd before I copy, and include CCC. Can I
boot the wallstreet off the cd and use ccc to copy everything back
from the ibook to my pristene drive?

Welcome to the club.

I recently bought a used 15, G4, 800 MHz Powerbook which has Panther
installed. The seller gave me the set of system discs that came with
the machine, 10.1, without the Panther upgrade discs and without
documentation. The owner also had no need for OS 9 so there is no
classic installed. Owning a lot of older Macs with different
requiremets for installing OS 10, I need some help on the following,
and anything else that I might be over-looking from lack of
experience--

I also purchased a used, full install set of Panther discs (without
printed documentation).

Would this software have the Powerbook CP's or any components that
might exist for the Powerbook? I didn't see Powerbook specific Panther
installation discs at Apple.
OS X installs all components needed for any model of Macintosh that it
can run on. For Panther, this means all models from Blue White G3s
on up. I believe Apple specified built-in USB. You needn't worry
about missing anything - you're not.

Is it necessary to partition the 60 GB drive when I install drivers
for 9.2.2-to create a separate partition for each OS and relating to
this question, does this machine boot in 9.2.2?
It's not necessary to partition the drive; I keep both Classic and OS X
on the same volume in all of my system builds. I believe you bought a
15 Titanium G4, correct? If so, that computer WILL boot into OS 9 if
you want it to and if the drive had OS 9 drivers installed upon
initialization. BTW, I consider partitioning to be a religious matter.

The machine is beautiful and runs very fast in Panther--I am
overwhelmed by it. It also seems to get very hot on the bottom--Is
this normal and OK?
I have a 1 GHz Titanium and it gets hot too. I use a Podium CoolPad
stand to elevate the back end of the computer and put some airflow
between me and the bottom of it. Works like a champ. I believe the
Apple Stores sell them which is handy if you have one near you.

Check the third column. It should have your username as the owner of

The fun I've been having

Hi folks!

I'm posting this to 2 different lists in the hopes of hitting a bigger
knowledge base. Please forgive me, I'm at the limit of my patience.
The move to Panther has been an ugly one for me, and continues to
frustrate me. Let me start with the machine and then the problems
I've been having and what I've tried over the past weeks.
SNIP

But now, my problem is that I can't mount any network drives. I can
see them, and I can attempt to connect to them, but they don't mount
on the desktop or in the finder side bar. This means I can't backup.
And the way this adventure through computing hell has been going, I
NEED to backup!

I understand, through lots of searching, that there may be an issue
with video drivers, and with more than 384 MB of RAM installed. The
networking has me stumped though. Where do I go from here? One part
of me wants to ditch Panther and go back to Jaguar because it worked
well. But the other part of me prefers the speed and features of
Panther, when it is working nicely...
Dave,

First of all, just because you ran the repair permissions utility
doesn't mean that all the permissions settings on your drive are
properly set. This util will only reset permissions for items it sees
in /Library/Receipts. If you copied old preferences and ~/Library
items it may very well be that they are incorrect. The
volumes-not-mounting issue smacks of permission settings being
incorrect for /Volumes. Here's what my Panther boot disk looks like:

You're going to need to be very careful with the settings at the root

Go to the terminal, change to your home directory, check that your home
directory permissions are set like this:

drwxr-xr-x 25 philburk staff850 28 Jan 13:07 .

drwxr-xr-x 5 philburk staff170 19 Mar 2003 Sites
Just to make sure I would issue the following command:

sudo chown -R [yourusername]:staff *

in your home directory. This will make sure that you own all the items
in there.

I would also pull that second 256 MB chip and run it for a good couple
of days and notice if there is a significant difference. Finally, stop
overclocking until you have Panther stable.

I guess I should have pointed that out as well. Thanks, Dan.

I suppose a X-capable Mac with enet and FW ports could function as a
router, providing DHCP, NAT, etc. for a FW-connected LAN through a FW
hub, though I haven't tried it. The throughput is likely quite alot
faster than 100BT enet, but I don't know enough about how it would
compare with a gigE network. The hardware would be cheaper though for a
small FW net (FW PCI cards are what, $15 each?) I dunno how FW works
for
long wire runs, actually I don't think it does work over more than a
few
meters. Anyone know the allowable FW cable lengths?
The current limitation for IEEE 1394 is 4.5 meters. There are
repeaters that can extend this distance. Here's a link for some, in
both 400 and 800 flavors:

http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg30_firewirerepeaters.htm

$49 and $79, respectively.

I don't think TCP/IP over FireWire is available for MacOS 8/9.
Not unless someone besides Apple has written an extension for it.
Highly unlikely.

Re: The fun I've been having

2004-01-28 Thread Phil Burk
On Jan 28, 2004, at 2:47 PM, Dave Bonhoff wrote:

I O/C'd by changing the multiplier. I did not change the bus speed.
I appreciate that this may be a factor, but since it was stable under
Jaguar, I don't know why Panther would have issues. Panther appears
to be less CPU intensive than Jaguar. It is certainly much snappier
and according to the Activity monitor, the CPU usage appears to be
lower on average.
It doesn't matter, fundamental parts of the OS changed dramatically
between 10.2 and 10.3. Prudent troubleshooting mandates that you turn
off the overclocking.

The hard drive is less than a year old, so I can only hope that it is
still in good order. Disk Utility has not reported any issues with
regards to S.M.A.R.T. status. At this time I'm leaning to possible RAM
issues, video driver issues, and problems with permissions.
A complete initialization of the drive with zeroes will turn up any
sector-related issues. If your drive is having difficulty spinning up
it would be manifested in other ways (notable pauses, system hangs,
obvious noise).

Correct me if this is wrong, but if I am able to do a full backup
using either CCC or Disk Utility, I would be safe in attempting to do
an archive and restore installation - assuming I remove one of the 256
MB RAM chips. If I did this, would I have to re-install all my
applications again? Obviously I'd have to do all the software
updates. But I'm thinking that I might be able to eliminate problems
with permissions this way and possibly any corrupt components from the
current install.
Use CCC. I assume you're thinking of backing up to a FW device.
Definitely the best way to go. If you do this and subsequently do an
archive and install you should be OK. The Panther installer won't
clobber stuff you've added to any of the folder hierarchies such as
/Application and /Library. (Actually, this changed in Jag too but I'm
not sure exactly when...)

Keep in mind that if you do an archive and install that you probably
don't want to be preserving current users and network settings. This
shouldn't matter if you have a complete backup as you'll be able to
restore bits and pieces of your home directory as needed. As long as
you don't completely replace your new home directory with your old you
should be good to go.

Fwd: Hard Drive Upgrade Problem

The 10 gig came out fairly easily ... the 30 gig went in fairly easily
but when I put everything back together and go to install Panther on
it, it doesn't show up in the Destination volume pane. It's as quiet
as a cloud. It's as like it's not even in the Pismo.

Panicking, I put the 10 gig back in and smile when it boots normally.

I've tried this several times now, trying to match the 30 gig
installation precisely with the successful 10 gig but so far, no
satisfaction.
Glenn,

It seems that the 30 gig drive needs to be initialized. Boot from your
Panther install CD and run Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Initialize the drive. If you want to make this drive readable from OS
9 make sure to install the OS 9 drivers.

Good luck.

If you partition you drive to keep 9 on a separate partition, should
you need to do a clean OS X install, you won't have to re-install 9.
Plus, it makes troubleshooting easier since the folders from OS 9 are
not mixed up with those from OS X.
I personally wouldn't do it. It is possible to do an archive and
install instead of a completely clean install with the OS X installer.
This will leave your user data and any other installations in place on
your drive and not clobber them upon install. There shouldn't be a
need to do a complete clean install unless you wipe the drive and then
you'll be needing a backup anyway.

If you feel the need to partition I would only do a small OS 9
partition in addition to the OS X partition. Every time I partition a

eventually run out of space on one partition or another. Depends on

If you can boot into 9 and have the Disk Warrior CD, try running it

Otherwise, I'm stumped. Please let us know how this situations pans

Two things. One, got a recent backup? *grin* Two, contact Alsoft

it.

You need to be extremely careful about what you use to clear and dry
your LCD display. Repeated use of alcohol-based products will, over
time, prematurely age your screen and cause discoloration and cracking.
Make sure to get a lint-free non-scratching polishing cloth. A
chamois is great but I use the Laptop ScreensaverZ from Radtech
(www.radtech.us). This nice piece of cloth serves a double duty: I
can clean my screen safely with it and it covers my keyboard when my
PowerBook is closed, preventing keymarks on the screen. The keyboard
can actually come in contact with the screen when it's closed and the
oil and dirt from my grubby fingers would necessitate my cleaning the
screen more often.

2. I'm normally working someplace where I can use the power adapter.
Is this OK, or does the battery need to be used occasionally and then
recharged? If yes, how often and how low should the charge go before
I recharge?
Someone else may correct me, but AFAIK, there is no memory associated
with the batteries Apple uses in the iBook and PowerBook. You can
either leave the computer plugged in or not; I've run my battery down
multiple times and have not yet noticed any dropoff in available
charge. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I wouldn't worry too much
about it.

I've just bought an old Wallstreet (the one with the missing keys).

It's old and cheap, not cheap enough to make it obvious that its
background is dodgy, but there is a sign that point to the possibility
of it being a little than kosher, the lack of serial number. The
sticker
has been removed, though that in itself means absolutley nothing.

Anyway, it's not the legality of the machine that is in question as
such, its surprise I had when I checked the serial number in Apple
System Information...
... blank!

How come ?! Can one actually change this ?
---
Beats me, though my Wallstreet doesn't show the ser# is Apple System
Profiler (OS9.2) Don't know where this is stored (PRAM, HD?) but a
reset
of PRAM or reformatting of the HD would probably wipe out a serial
number. I know mine is ligitimate as I bought it from my daughter. She
did have a hard crash and a friend reformatted the HD for her and
installed a fresh system.

The serial number sticker on the bottom of the machine is also missing,
probably from the way she used it. She often had it sitting on her lap,
wearing shorts, in the summer. The heat of operation of the machine
combined with perspiration and the glue on the sticker just wasn't up
to
the abuse. Maybe she wore it an an inadvertant tatoo for awhile!
I own a Wallstreet and the serial number WORE OFF of the sticker on the
bottom. Apple replaced it when i sent it in for repairs a couple of
years back. I covered the bar code and number with some scotch tape
which prevented the ink from rubbing off.

As to the serial numbers, those were stored in a specific part of the
boot sector for many machines (pre Quicksilvers, I do believe).

From a post on another technical mailing list (mac-mgrs):

First it looks like the serial number is stored in either the firmware
on later NewWorld ROM machines, or in the boot sector on older
machines. This is supported by different support articles at Apple.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106529 (indicates the S#
is in the firmware)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=21103 (indicates the S#
is on the hard drive)

There is a tool to fix the missing serial number issue but it's only
given out to authorized service centers.

Re: Error Msg of Inpending Doom?

I have a recurring error message. In the last 2 months it has

There is a problem with the disk Macintosh HD. Some information may
have been lost. Check any recently used files for data loss, and use a
disk repair program on the disk.

Sounded pretty serious to me..I have OS 9.2.1 on a 400 MHz
Pismo with 320 RAM. I cannot use my USB mouse but the trackball works.
Time still runs. Opened note pad, but froze on Simple Text.
Control/Open-Apple/Power button gets it to restart, but gets to
smiling Mac and then continuously loops through the restart process
until I press the reset button on the back. That gets it so I can
start up fine, just needing to reset Time Date. I have run Norton
Disk Doctor, DiskWarrior and Disk First Aid and all checks out fine.
Until it happens again.

I am anal about backing up (that little USB jump drive is sooo
cool), and I have just convinced my wife that I need a bigger HD
anyway. (oops, sorry, I should have mentioned I have 10GB, I believe
it's the original. I bought this for myself last Christmas...) I'm
leaning towards the 40GB Travelstar and hope that it will solve the
problem and be a lot quieter BUT would like to know more about this
error and what to do to avoid it in the future.

I am using Digest Mode, so will check back to see what info anyone
has. Been on this list for about 6 months and now can't live without
it... Feel the same about my Pismo. Now if I can just get up the
courage for OSX!
My first comment will be: upgrade to OS X. Seriously. OS 9 has some
serious issues when dealing with file system problems. I have several
BW machines that exhibit this same behavior - even after replacing the
hard drives and moving from SCSI to IDE drives. It only happens under
OS 9, not under OS X. I would continue making backups if I were you -
it may be that your drive is in danger of imminent failure. But I
suspect that you have the same problem I do and that it is related to
the disk controller on the motherboard.

OS X is much more forgiving of hard drive directory issues than OS 9 is.

Re: eBay

I don't know about Apple, but I've rarely seen employee discounts

I can see items like this making their way onto ebay cheaply-ish. Not

term.
Yeah, but these folks aren't going to sell you a new powerbook for
30-40% off...
Machines close to EOL or near scheduled price drops often pop up on
Apple Promo sheets available to employees. I have a very good friend
(college buddy) who has been an Apple Employee for 15 years. He
regularly sends out the promo sheet (approx. quarterly) which can have
quite good deals on it. In February I purchased a new 15 PowerBook
from the local Apple Store (yes, I was so hot to trot for the computer
that I completely forgot about my buddy) for $2999.

Four days later a promo sheet came out with the 15 on it for 2499.
For the mathematically impaired among us that's almost 17% off the
original price.

Apple Employees can purchase equipment for friends and family (ANY
EQUIPMENT) for 15% off. This is stuff that doesn't have to be on the
promo sheet. I do believe that's called a tier-two purchase. Apple
Employees are entitled to purchase one computer system (it may be two
now - I'm not sure) at a higher discount rate than 15%. I don't know
what it is but it is significant.

So, yes, recent Apple equipment may show up for resale on auction sites
at a good price because of employee purchases. I don't think it
happens often but it can happen.
