You're much better off paying for one than "renting" one from your cable
company. A few years ago they were selling for $3-400 and the technology
was changing, so buying them wasn't a good idea, but now they are less
than $100 and relatively standardized, so I'd definitely buy one with the
features that you need/want.

"NAT" (Network Address Translation) is a basic feature, although not
always called that. Almost all of them will let you connect multiple
computers to the 'net.

I depends on what kind or router you get. If I were buying one, I would
get one with "built in" wireless capability. There are a ton available.
Airport is one, but on the pricey side. Unless you have to route
AppleTalk, save some $$ and get a Linksys or such.
Or unless you also want the USB printer port and a dialup modem and ease
of use, in which case Airport Extreme is a nifty choice.

But yes, if you don't need/want those things (nor AppleTalk), Linksys and
others are a good, cheaper option.

Yes the advantage is that you can print to it w/o any other computer being
connected to the printer. That means that there does not need to be a
computer plugged in/turned on for the printer to work.

Many routers/cable modems have USB connectors but they are only for
network connection, not peripherals.

At this point the only thing I really need to work under Windows is ACT!

I was wondering whether Win98 vs Win2000 vs WinXP would make a significant

be a good time to add another 512mb?

My guess would be the brick walls are what are killing your signal.

I know that range is influenced by many factors but I would expect a
range in my garden to reach 25 m. but it doesn't. My Kensington WiFi
finder also does not recognize the base station at this distance.
My base station covers the entire house, upstairs and down, but it's
largely open space.

Someone suggested that the ABE is lousy for signal strength, but again
that depends on a lot of factors.

The suggestion to get an antennae is a good one. You might also want to
get another base unit and see if that one works better.

...

Hrm... re-reading above, are you saying that you can see the base station
through the window 25m away and it won't reach you? Are there
microwaves/florescent lighting around? If you change the orientation of
the station (physically turn it different ways) does that help?

If you have a clear line of sight, that should work from that distance.
My Linksys said to put the WIFI unit as high as possible for best range,
so perhaps raise it higher off the ground?

mac osx equivalent to hibernate?

2004-04-28 Thread Timothy J. Luoma
Windows has something for laptops called "hibernate" which is basically
this: everything that you are working on is saved to a hibernation file,
then the computer goes to sleep. When you restart, everything appears
just as you left it, all the windows are still there, etc.

Now the real feature here is this: while in Hibernate mode, the computer
is completely turned off. I could unplug it and the battery would not
drain one little bit. I can put the laptop in my bag while in hibernate,
leave it there for a few days or a week or month or year and open it back
up and have it appear just as I left it.

Now I see that OSX has a sleep mode, but this does not seem to shut the
computer down completely, and I am wondering if it is safe to leave it in
that mode when going from home to work or whether I should shut it down
completely and just restart when I get home.

Thanks!

Yes! I'm glad you mentioned that as it was an important factor for me as
well. Given that a laptop doesn't have any "expansion bays" I like having
a PCMCIA slot as a little bit of "future proofing".

My current laptop was made before Firewire or Wireless Ethernet was well
known, but because it has the PCMCIA slots, I was able to get a WIFI card
and a FW card and add it to my computer.

You never know what next big thing is just around the corner and will
require a port that you might not have on your machine. PCMCIA gives you
a bit of upgrade power.

Good thing, too, otherwise I would have had no way to use my iPod for the

FWIW, I tend to amortize the price difference over the life of the
machine. This is especially true with laptops as they can't be upgraded
easily (or at all in some aspects).

Assume you can get 5 years out of the machine
$500 / 5 years / 12 months = $8/month for the extra. Or about $0.30/day.
In the end, I decided that it was worth it to me in the long run to get
the extra performance of a Powerbook.

I think you're the only one who can answer the "is it worth it" question.
I would believe that the overall speed of the Powerbook would be better
for your tasks in the long run, but I can't say for sure.

Only that I know it was true when I bought a computer from Dell whilst

offer their "Complete Care" for machines bought in Florida either (and
California, iirc). Seems a stupid law, to prohibit people from getting

PowerBook and the previous top-of-the-line 1.33 GHz PowerBook are
virtually identical: 167 MHz bus, 1 MB L3 cache. I don't expect a
dramatic difference in speed, just an incremental improvement - probably
around 135 to 136 on the CineBench scale.

Does that help?
Yup.

The overall speed of a system is dependent on many different factors, and
L2/L3 cache makes the overall system faster, if I understand correctly.

HA! I thought this was a setup.

I have only a '98 Wallstreet, but I *do* still use a screamin' 400 MHz
OpenStep (Intel) machine, and an '040 Cube to boot.

Thanks again for all your contributions to the NeXT world.
You're welcome. Believe it or not it was about a decade ago that I
started working for PEAK on the next-ftp site. I remember thinking that
the WWW was a waste of time (well, it still is, but in a different way ;-)

(For the non-NeXTers: PEAK was one of the two main FTP sites. Just about
every NeXTSTEP/OpenStep program was available on one or both of PEAK or
Peanuts, which was in Germany, IIRC. This was long before anyone had
their own web page to sell software. If you are familiar with Tucows or
Download.com it was something like that except a lot less sophisticated.
I essentially ran the PEAK site, answered questions, etc. This was back
when Usenet was actually worth using and before there was much spam... ah
the golden days. Believe it or not I still get a few emails/month about
NeXT stuff. You can still find a bunch of it at www.peak.org/~luomat/
[which you are only allowed to visit if you agree not to mock the web
design. It was the late 1990s.)

NeXTStep/OpenStep was absolutely awesome and I missed it terribly when I
finally had to quit using it (I sold my NeXTStation in 2001 and my NSFIP
machine went to the trash heap because I couldn't find anyone to buy it
:-/ I was truly hoping for OS-X for Intel but I'm looking forward to
getting back into the Unix world (tried FreeBSD but it had the same
problem as Windows; it was too hard to get it to do what I wanted it to
do. Even getting a window manager to work was a colossal pain.)

...

I just realized that I bought a new computer in 1997 (133mhz Pentium with
64mb ram [I think] which became the main machine instead of my 25mhz
NeXTStation w/ 32ram) then 2000 (650mhz Pentium with 128mb ram) and now
2004 (1ghz G4 with 512mb ram). I wonder what I'll be looking at in
2007/2008 :-?

Anyway, thanks for the ego boost. I think this is the first time I've
been referred to as "*the* Timothy J. Luoma" :-DDD As if my wife
didn't already have too much to put up with (-:

In the Pentium world, a 750mhz is not 50% faster than a 500mhz. Is that
true for G4 as well?
I think they used to use 5% increase per 100Mhz as a general rule. I'm
not sure where that rule came from or if it's true, but it's just one of
those things I heard somewhere.

I am not sure what "High Powered USB port" means but "powered USB hub"
means that it plugs into the wall outlet. There are USB hubs which run on
"bus power" (i.e. the power they get from the main USB port on the
computer). Most USB hubs have a switch which you can choose either "self
powered" (aka bus power) or "A/C Power" (or the like).

Configure via web is also interesting.

One thing I forgot to mention was important is RANGE. I hope to find one

Compare Apple to Orange (err.. I mean Pentium)

Is there anywhere I can some sort of a 'real world' comparison between a
Pentium and G4? I'm not looking for crazy "Pantyum Sux" basically I'm
just trying to figure out how much faster a G4/1.25GHz would be compared
to a 650mhz/Pentium 3)
I don't need to be convinced that G4/G5 is better than Pentium. I
understand the megahertz myth, I'm just doing my comparison shopping and
consideration.
Looking at http://www.barefeats.com/pvp.html it looks like there is a big
jump between G4 and G5... but of course no one knows when the G5
Powerbooks are coming out.

Like any other company, Dell can have problems as well. I've overseen the
purchase of a dozen Dell machines over the past few years and none of them
has had any problems, and my Dell Inspiron 7500 has been a great machine,
very reliable and still going strong 4 years later... the only problem is
that I want to get Unix without all the fuss of Linux/FreeBSD... I'm not
really worried about the virus a day because procmail takes care of all
the attachments at the server level...

I think I'm going to hold out for the time being. I'll definitely get the
AppleCare when the time comes... Don't think I'll get a refurb... I like
that "fresh out of the box" experience... I will keep an eye out, however.

As for speed, my current machine is a 650mhz Pentium3 with 512ram, so
pretty much anything is going to be a good step up, and I'm sure even VPC
will be faster.

Timing my first Mac purchase

2004-03-12 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

Hello all

I am currently planning to buy a 15" PB to replace my 4 year old
Dell Inspiron. I am trying to figure out how to time this purchase so
that I don't buy a Powerbook only to have a newer model come out a later (which is what happened to me with the
Dell).

While I understand that there are no guarantees and Apple doesn't
tell people when they are releasing new hardware, are there guidelines
that I should consider (i.e. "Apple generally releases new hardware in
")??

I have seen some speculation about G5 PBs this year, but that
seems really optimistic IMO (not that MO counts for much). It seems worth
the wait to get the G5 since my current computer is still working
acceptably... but then I wonder about things like the first round of new
hardware and the potential for problems with them in general, battery
life, the fact that VirtualPC (which I will need for a few pieces of
proprietary software) doesn't yet work on the G5 (but hopefully will
soon?).

Anyway, I am just looking for any advice folks might be able to
give.
