Thanks for the clarification, Ken.

However, I still don't see how this solves the poster's problem. His
son regularly closes the iBook and puts it to sleep that way some of
the time. Are you suggesting that he not put it to sleep at all?

Well, closing the "lid" on a clamshell forces it to sleep
by a magnetic switch in the lid/topcase. It can't operate
with the lid closed.

It just won't sleep if left to sit open.

First, he's using OS 9.2.2.

Secondly, what do you mean "You do not need it?"

If one is used to sleep mode and closes the lid on a laptop with
sleep mode turned off, what happens? If the iBook stays on, there
could be two problems: overheating, and battery drain if it's not

Re: CDRW in clamshell iBook - hints and tips, please

2005-08-23 Thread PeterH5322

>Needless to say, I like the improved functionality [ the UJDA-330 ] could
provide.

Practically all of Panasonic's drives have been discontinued.

Particularly the UJDAs, but also some UJs.

The most easily obtainable Panasonic drive is the UJ-845-B.

This is a slot-loader, only, and takes +/- media; CD and DVD; ROM, R and
R/W; and also two-layer writing and rewriting (recording and re-recording
for + media).

Boots fine in my Lombard and Pismo under 9.2.2 and 10.3.9.

But ... it is unsupported by X's desktop burner, unless PatchBurn has
been run.

Now, the Pioneer DVR-K05 is an even better choice as it is supported for
all "i" products on 10.4 and later, without PatchBurn, and is supported
on 10.3, with PatchBurn.

Same media capability as the UJ-845-B, only faster.

I think I paid $129 for the UJ-845-B, and $105 for the DVR-K05.

I bought the DVR-K05 mainly to see if the drawer bezel of the Lombard and
Pismo could be adapted to it, but it is a NO-GO.

Oh, I've tried these drives in the MCE optical media bay for the
Wallstreet, and these work fine there, too.

Now, these are 12.7mm drives as the media bays for all the above-named
machines expect 12.7mm drives.

There are 9.5mm versions available for some drives.

CDRW in clamshell iBook - hints and tips, please

2005-08-23 Thread Robert Eye
I recently bought an iBook SE off of eBay that turned
out to have a dead CDROM drive. I was planning on
replacing it with another CDROM drive, until I checked
the drive compatibility feedback at the Accelerate
Your Mac web site. A number of people have
successfully installed a UJDA330 CDRW drive into their
colored iBooks. Needless to say, I like the improved
functionality this could provide.

The only issue that everyone mentioned was having to
do structural surgery on the colored cover plate to
get it to fit the new drive. The issue that not
everyone seemed to agree on was whether or not the
drive was bootable in either/both MacOS 9 or X (either
holding down the C key or
control-option-shift-delete).

I've looked over the instructions at pbfixit.com and
the task doesn't look too daunting. I just need to get
the kids out of the house for a few hours. :-)

So, has anyone on the list done this upgrade? What
insight can you share from your experiences
(especially on the cover plate surgery)?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX

P.S. I know about the CD-RW that Wegener Media sells,
but I'm not interested for that price - plus, it
doesn't use the iBook's cover plate.

Yep. Remember it's a PITA to replace the optical, so I'd suggest going
for as fast a drive as possible. Since the cost difference between an 8x
writer and a 24x writer can be only $10 or $20, it makes little sense to
bother with a slower unit. Make sure the drive comes with a faceplate,
some don't and it's virtually impossible to source one separately.

One other thing. On a clamshell, the drive must set as bus Master to be
bootable using the "C" startup key. Many OEM drives by default are set to
Slave. It's not difficult to mod a drive to enable bus Master, but it's
something to keep in mind.

Duh! I should have thought of that!
Most any slim optical will work, just don't expect to able to re-use

especially spiffy but works just fine.
So pretty much anything on this page should work?

What mechanisms (if any) will work to put a CDRW into an original

This will be with OS X 10.3.

Re: Need LCD for Clamshell iBook

2004-08-25 Thread George Mogiljansky
A while ago, I was looking for the 'generic' WS LCD.
It is also a Samsung. But the power and data cables
might not match the Apple requirements. I paid almost
the same price for a used WS screen on eBay.

Clamshell iBook's original panel is a Samsung LT121SU-123. The 3400/Kanga
LCDs are (sadly) completely incompatible.

However, this worked for me:
<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3488983048>

"LCD panel / screen, manufactured by Samsung, part number: LT121SU-121.
Suitable for a Dell Latitude CPi series notebook computer."

The Dell panel had an EMI shield attached, but it just unscrewed.
Everything else was identical to the iBook's panel, hooked it up and it's
working perfectly.

I suggest an eBay title-and-description search for this string, exclude
the brackets:

Matshita/Panasonic UJ-815B in my Pismo now, and it works great. Thanks

Rajah
Pretty much any CDRW will work, some will require modifying the support
files in OS9 and/or OSX. The OS9 files can be changed with bbedit, OSX
can be changed with the fine utility patchburn or patchburn II for
Panther. The real issue is making the faceplate fit.
If the computer just sits on your desk, maybe it's not a big deal to
have the drive exposed, I certainly wouldn't travel with it that way
though. I did have one installed in a Lombard like that for a few
months, although I eventually replaced it with the stock CD when I sold
the computer.

Of course if you do that you may as well replace the CD with a CDRW
while

Do the bezels fit ?

I can only offer a definite maybe. There is a better chance of a
Matshita fitting, although that's not always the case. I put a Samsung
into my icebook, and the bezel sort of fit - I had to shave a little
off the top and move the manual eject button. Same story with
Pismo/Lombard drives, I have a Matshita CDRW sitting around here that
I can't rework the bezels to fit properly.

Subject: Clamshell ibook, dead cd drive: how to install os X?

The title says it all. I've been given a Blueberry clamshell ibook with
a broken cd drive, which also starts up with the flashing folder deal.
I quit running OS 9 some time ago, and I'd like to load OS X as it says
that this is supported on the spec page. I plan on installing Jaguar.
What is the best way to go about doing this?
The way that I've thought of is to install a spare 9 gig laptop drive
into my Pismo, install OS X on it, then take it out of the Pismo and
put it into the ibook. This seems like a big hassle, so there's got to
be an easier way, right? Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks.
PS - While I'm in there replacing the hard drive, how hard is it to
install an airport card? Any experiences with performance?
It's easy to install an Airport card, extremely difficult to install a
hard drive. The Pismo swap method will work, but be prepared to spend
hours getting to the original iBook hard drive. Of course if you do
that you may as well replace the CD with a CDRW while you're in there.
You may be able to install OSX via an external USB, since the Blueberry
doesn't have FireWire.

Install from the pismo using target disk mode on the iBook?

Very easy. As for performance, better reception than current Powerbooks

You do know that USB Card Support 1.4.1 is the most recent version,
right? You might want to give it a try. If I can use it with OS 8.6,
I'm pretty sure you can use it with 9.1. The README file will tell

Clamshell iBook: Screen Question

2004-04-05 Thread Kyle Lee
I have an Indigo iBook running OS X 10.2.8. Once in a while, after the
machine has gone to sleep and I wake it up, the screen seems dark
somewhat, especially around the perimeter. And after about 10-15
minutes, it returns to the original brightness and sometimes it stays
that way until it goes to sleep again. Upon waking up, it is fine. Any
clues? I recall seeing discussions concerning the backlight?

Thanks for any help on this.

As others have mentioned, Jag and Panther both run very nicely on the
clamshell iBooks. It does help to max the ram, 544MBs on my Blueberry
work just dandy.

Errrm, I also speed-bumped it from 300mhz to 400mhz, that helped a bit
too.

PS5 and Ill 8 should work smoothly, while I haven't used those on this
iBook I know from using them on my 9600/G3 they run fine under Classic
with Jag.

I have one of the original clamshells (in blue) and have been running Jaguar on it
since Jaguar first came out. It is EXTREMELY stable. I installed a 512mg ram chip
in it. It makes a BIG difference. (Just make sure you get the correct ram for the
machine. Your machine WILL take a 512 mg chip.)
I can't speak for Photoshop or Illustrator, because I use Pagemaker and Indesign.
On my clamshell, I'm staying at Jaguar. [My TiPB will be upgrading to Panther.] If
you upgrade all the way to Panther, will have to buy more upgrades for your Photoshop
and Illustrator? Will they run in Panther?

I have the same computer. I put a Pc-100 512MB chip in it.

Panther runs great. So much faster then jaguar. I don't have OS9 on my computer
at all. But Photoshop CS works great on it.

Hope this helps!

OS X on Clamshell iBook

2003-11-17 Thread Mathew Peace
I'm a Graphic Design student, in Queensland Australia.

I have a:

Tangerine iBook G3 300 mHz
192 MB RAM (64 originally, 320 max)
6 gig HD
4 MB Vram
Running OS 9.2.2

My questions are:

can i run OS X (panther or jaguar) smoothly?
can i run Photoshop 5 and Illustrator 8 in a classic mode?
will they run smoothly?
or should I boost the ram to the max (320 MB)?

I would like to upgrade to OS X, as many utilities these days are OS X only.
I've been asking around as this is a costly upgrade for, and a new computer is
out of the question until I can graduate.

Thanks
Mathew.

That sounds like a loose LCD cable. You could try taking it apart
and securing the connection, but these cables are extremely fragile.
If it's not the connector that's loose, you probably have a slight
(microscopic, even) crack or break in your cable that will positively
get worse if you try to "fix" it

Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8? : UPDATE

2003-10-09 Thread Kyle Lee
Believe it or not. I booted the iBook and let it finish the boot
sequence. I could tell it was finished because the CD in the tray spun
up and I heard it mount. I then adjusted the brightness of the monitor
using the keys on the keyboard. The screen would go totally black and
extremely white, still no picture. So, I merely tapped the back of the
display and the picture returned. Any clues? I have taken many iBooks
apart completely but never the LCD.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8?

2003-10-09 Thread Kyle Lee
Hello all,

This Blueberry iBook was running 10.2.8, the original release, sinc the
original installation. It went to sleep tonight about an hour ago. Now
it will not boot from the HD, the Jaguar Disk or OS9.1 Disk. The screen
lights up at boot, the HD spins, the CD constantly spins up then down
over and over. If I press the start button and let go after letting the
computer sit running for a moment, I hear the familiar tone that you
would get under normal boot, the one you get when the dialog box
appears asking if you really want to shut down. If I hit enter/return,
as if to say OK, it shuts down. Any clues on how to get around this? I
have attempted booting with the option key down,

Thanks

Re: Clamshell iBook

2003-08-26 Thread Kyle Lee
Ken,

Even if this iBook had a bad motherboard, you got a steal. Either way,
sounds like the Ion battery (Apple M7426 Li-Ion Battery Clamshell
iBook) is dead. You can find them used on eBay for about $70+. These
will hold about a 5 hour charge. I am using one now that I bought on
eBay. New ones will cost about $140.

The iBook does not have a PRAM battery. I have taken so many of these
apart. It is not that difficult. I can send you the PDF files that
illustrate how to do it.

Let me know if you want them.

The problem with so many of these batteries--unless you buy them from

back to life with a vst charger... others have not been able to do that

This iBook does not have a PRAM battery. I think it uses a capacitor
that's good for a very short times--the time to unscrew the battery and
replace it--if you're lucky. The big battery is the only battery in it.
If the main battery is dead, you need to run it with the adapter and get
another battery--which are scarce as hens' teeth.

Are you saying you got a Blueberry iBook for $20? The battery is dead. I
don't know the iBook very well but since almost every Apple laptop had had a
backup or PRAM battery, I would think that this iBook had one too. It's
probably a rechargeable one and since the main battery is dead, the backup
battery is dead too. You might be able to get it back to work by keeping the
iBook plugged in for 24 to 48 hours. It might need a fully charged main
battery to do so, though...

Thanks,

clamshell ibook modem fix?

2002-09-26 Thread Bufford Ennox

My girlfriend's clamshell ibook modem plug is now
floating around inside the case. It is no longer under
warranty and apple wants $400.00+ just to look at it.
Does anyone know of a place to get either a
replacement modem and detailed instructions (I have
installed a modem in a PB 520c so I am not a complete
beginner) or know of a good tech in the Seattle area
that could guarantee their work? I know a USB external
modem is another option, but she would rather not have
that hassle. Thanks in advance!
