Dennis you are sadly mistaken. Windoze has had SEVERAL updates since
the original release of XP. Several service packs; as Microsnot calls
them, and so many security updates it's not even funny. I only know
this due to my profession, which requires me to know a bit of
everything on most platforms. The software update process for Windoze
on top of everything else is flawed, based on IE, which is a security
nightmare. . .not polished like Apple's Software Update being a
completely separate app. In the future, please carefully read posts

Sorry if I sound pissed, but the WORST insult in my circle is calling

Hello kt:
Excuse my smug tone in prior post.
Forgot to mention that i ensured that the maintenance routines had
run via macaroni, did a full permissions repair, Disk utility repair
and a diskwarrior rebuild. Furthermore, no Norton products have ever
been installed on my Pismo OSX. All of these preventive measures
should have helped. Definitely contributed to me running out of gas
and gambling on a straight update instead of fresh install. Either
that or the painkillers i'm on for my back surgery last week...which
also may have contributed to the smug tone.

I really had geared up for a clean install - maybe even wiping the
drive in order to get find by content/spotlight indexing to work
properly. Will wait for my next drive upgrade. I wimped out, but am
still surprised by the mostly positive outcome.

Will also look for the Epson drivers mentioned by TurtleBear.
Anyway, let's focus on the reports of Tiger issues, solutions and
features. Should help everyone make or decide to make the transition.

Hello,
I have finally had a successful install on my PowerBook 17 1GHz with 1 Gig
of ram. I initially tried the update and when I rebooted everything was
slower than molasses trying to go uphill. System Profiler and Safari would
not even launch. I then did a reinstall, same problem. I then reinstalled OS
10.3.9 (not a good idea according to Apple) and still problems.
Today I decided to bite the bullet and erase and install and now everything
is fine. I had backed up all data and software so should not be a problem
now.

Don't worry about it so much. Computers are in a constant state of upgrades.
As long as your video card is supported by the software your actually
running, then everything is fine. :)

The only thing I worry about is file format comapatibility. I really hate
the nearly non standard file formats for just about everything and the
constant inability to open this versions document verses that version. That
gets annoying.

Your in luck. Apple knows it can't sustain [or burden everyone with]
constant 12-18 month upgrades. I believe it was Phil Schuller [sp?] who said
that the upgrades will slow down, and it will probably be more of a 2 -2.5
year schedule.

I think Apple has waited. Tiger was released 18 months after Panther.
Your Pismo is over five years old now, I think it's to Apple's credit
that it is still a viable computer choice. I'm not sure what you mean
about the video card in the Pismo being supported, Quartz Extreme
requires at least a 16MB video card (600mnz iBook and up) while the
new Core Video has only a few supported cards at this time. I have
the same card in my 500mhz TiBook.

I understand what you are saying here but Apple has really strived to
support older systems while continuing to provide upgrades to the
rest of their customer base. Look at how long they have supported
OS 9 !

They have to continue to move forward but it doesn't mean you have
to. Nobody is forcing you to upgrade to Tiger. I am sure you could
use Panther for another couple of years and you'd still be fine.

I highly doubt Apple will stick with Tiger for another 2-3 years and
I can't see them backtracking to try and revive the Newton either.

I am excited by all the upgrades - but that's because I find them
increasing my efficiency and making normally tedious task much easier
(i.e Automator, new e-mail photo functions, integrating iPhoto, iDVD
and iTunes, etc).

Anyway, as I said, I do understand and appreciate your concerns but
you have to realize that they are not shared universally. While
many want to hold off on upgrades, many others want the improved OS
for a variety of reasons.

Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-07 Thread Frank Cornew
Let's get to work!
Tiger was a smooth upgrade on my 400 mHz Pismo. 576 MB RAM, 60 GB
fast travelstar. Was going to do a clean install and migrate due to
the scads of haxies on my Panther system. Updated the haxies, backed
up, got lazy and did a straight upgrade. No regrets.

Spotlight is great! Find by content never did work under Panther due
to some mysterious blockage of the indexing process. Really missed
it. Tiger Spotlight indexed 45 GB in under 8 hours.

We can now open multiple get info windows on selections of multiple
finder items as was possible under 9.x and prior systems. Previous
incarnations of X gave a one size fits all coverall info window -
useless when trying to compare files/folders.

Only two 'issues': My newer tech 6600 mAH battery doesn't seem to
calibrate. Time remaining for full discharge/charge never gets
calculated in menu bar display - yet. Pecentage, yes. Am cycling,
have reset PMU, nvram, etc. Think there is a hard core calibration
tactic via terminal that I may yet try.

Also am seeing odd behaviour with an Epson 740 inkjet. Won't print
via USB, but can access via utilities and get ink levels, clean, etc.
On the other hand, I can print to this printer via Airport Express
(remote node on network generated on a snow abs), but no access via
utilities or ink level check via the new button in print window.
Issues may have been present under Panther, only just pulled the 740
out of storage.

I have to agree with Craig. I originally installed Tiger as an
upgrade on my G5 iMac but I didn't like how things were workingI
had installed a lot of the haxies and such. So I copied my hard
drive to an external hard drive and did a clean install of Tiger.
I used the Migration Assistant to bring over stuff. But I had a few
applications that I had bought online and I kept the registration in
an email archive. In the past (when I upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3) I
had to open the entire file in textedit and use the 'find' feature
for the various apps (maybe I should think about storing them
somewhere else..or maybe hard copy). Anyway, with Tiger, I clicked
on spotlight and typed in the name of the application. Spotlight
found the email archive on the external drive, searched the entire
file and had the information for me in UNDER 10 SECONDS! Now, I was
EXTREMELY impressed!
In addition to speeding up my iBooks, 2002 Quicksilver and iMac,
Tiger is just really fast and I'm still looking for the 'bugs' (hype
on the part of some nay-sayers).
And, best of all, Apple BEAT Microsoft to the release of a 64 bit
OS. Running Tiger makes me proud!
But, for those of you who still prefer to stay with your present OS,
it it OS 8.6 or whatever.that's just fine and dandy. But keep in
mind that Apple doesn't support them anymore and there isn't going to
be a lot of new software coming your way. Nothing wrong with running
an upgraded 7300I applaud you, that's how I started out when I
decided to make the switch from Windows to the Mac, but progress is
so much more fun. And, that's what I use my Mac for is FUN!

Today I decided to bite the bullet and erase and install and now everything
is fine. I had backed up all data and software so should not be a problem
now.

Actually, if you do a good backup, there really is no reason to wait. If I
was the slightest worried about instability (which thus far I have no reason
to be), I can always just boot from my external FireWire drive into my old
Panther install. Fortunately, I haven't had to do that yet, and Tiger
remains a delight after a full week. Haven't even had to restart my
PowerBook yet.

I always wait. Usually some expensive app [music] that I need to upgrade

upgrades. I went from 7.5.5 [came with the 7300] to 7.6.1 [once the cds were
shipping that way] to 8.0/1 [when 8.1 was available for download] to 8.5/6
[when 9 come out], skipped all of 9 as I was tired of playing the upgrade
game and nothing I used required it.. I didn't upgrade to OSX until Jaguar
when 10.2.3 was shipping on disc and didn't upgrade to Panther until the
10.3.5 discs were shipping.

Bleeding edge I'm not. I usually only upgrade when an app that I use is
upgraded and requires an OS upgrade. So far I'm safe. :) From the many
reports out there it seems Tiger is pretty stable for a major OS upgrade
though.

There aren't, to my knowledge piles of bugs in Tiger. There is one
known bug, in the VPN code that's causing problems, and some programs
need to be updated.

But if you go to someplace like macintouch or MacFixit to get your
sense of the release, you'll thing that 10.4 is buggier than Windows
3.0...

MacFixit, in particular will pass along ANYthing. Macintouch will try
to get confirmation on things. 'Did this happen to more than one
person?'

MacFixit:
Joe Blow says that when he upgraded to 10.4 his mouse stopped working
entirely. Don't install 10.4 or your mouse stops working.

Ten minutes later
Joe says he fixed it, the cat pulled it out of the USB socket.
I always take what I find on these and the Apple forums with some
grains of salt...they're squeaky wheel fests to rival a national
hamster convention.

Besides, if everyone waits...who's going to find the bugs? :-p
Me, I'm expecting my copy this Friday or the beginning of next week.
I'm not sure which system I'm installing it on, it's not going to be my
production system first thing; probably either my Pismo or my home
desktop on the spare HDD.

If you're a belts and suspenders kinda guy, a good conservative rule of
thumb is always wait for the 0.1 version of *anything*.

(sez the guy who switched to Mozilla as his primary web browser way
back at version 0.6...lots of arrow scars from that progression to
Firefox 1.03 today)

But there's a lot to like about Tiger. I'm not going to wait very
long...there's one piece of sftware I use that I KNOW is affected, and
they're supposed to get the update out this week.

Actually, this has been the most trouble-free upgrade I've done. It
is now loaded on my iBook G4/800, which I did first and tested for
stability, as well as an eMac and my mini. All were done as archive
install, with settings imported, and I had no install problems and
only one other problem. It seems that after installing Tiger, the old
Targus USB hub that was attached to the mini caused the system to
crash several times. Removed the hub and no problems since. I have
seen some people complaining about network and printer problems but I
have had none.

My wife has been wanting Spotlight since it was announced, so I had
to get Tiger on her eMac to shut her up. :-)

Wait? Never!
I installed Tiger last night. I waited a few days to see if my monitor

Installation went smoothly, a lot quicker than I expected. Optimization
was extremely fast. So far no problems. Tiger seems smoother, just like
Panther felt smoother than Jaguar. I'm going to love Automator.

that. . .doesn't anyone wait anymore? I mean, there's bound to be
bugs in huge upgrades. . .history has taught me that.
Some people choose to wait, some don't.I have been using Macs for
more than 15 years now and I have to say that this was by far the
smoothest OS upgrade process I have ever had. However, I certainly
understand what you are saying - historically, there have been some
problems with new OS software. BUT - they were ironed out and I
think the majority of people have been pretty content with the
upgrades overall in the past 2-3 years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that people these days just
can't wait to run down to the Apple Store to pop in the latest and
greatest only to find themselves slowed down by piles of BUGS. No
thanks. . .I'm happy right now with 10.3.9. :)

Of course, it is always a choice as to whether you buy new, major
upgrade software within the first few days of release but sometimes
you have to take calculated risks and this was one that I felt worth
taking.

There were so many cool new features in Tiger that I personally did
not want to wait. The time savings and integration between programs
seemed very impressive from what I had read and they have definitely
proven to be so in the last few days that I have had Tiger
installed. It seems to be a fantastic upgrade thus far !

Take a look at this web link, it lists compatibility for Tiger and 3rd party
software venders. This list helped me plan my Tiger upgrade for my computer
network. I administer over 100 Macs at my job, and I have no plans within
the next 3 months to upgrade. OS 10.3.9 runs perfectly. It's all a matter of
perspective.

Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-04 Thread Nima
Well... On the date of the release of Tiger, at 6:00 p.m. I found
myself in line waiting for the Apple Store to re-open. They opened up
the store's door and about 200 or so of us faithfuls were in line and
under a general applause we entered the Store. The Apple personnel
were distributing some sort of scratch and win game... I won an iTune!

Upon entry, I proceeded to go straight to the counter and purchased
my fresh copy of Tiger. I came home soon thereafter, and installed on
my TiG4, 15, 1Ghz. I figured, bugs or no bugs, I will deal with it.
I did the same when 10 came out. Then the same when 10.2 came out.
The same with 10.3. Never had any issues (major ones) to deal with.

Some of us are crazy that way.

My Fellow PowerBook-philes and Zoltan,
I purchased Tiger right away but did not install it right away.
The reason I did this was in order to ensure that I received a low-
price for a retail box version of the system. As there were
multiple dealers selling Tiger at ~$100 without requiring an
update, this was ideal for me.

My thinking is that I should grab this good price and then install
it later after a few bugs work themselves out.

Cheers!
Sincerely,

Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?! {Tiger Gotcha}

2005-05-04 Thread David Lesher

Beware a major Gotcha..
Tiger does not support FileSharing over Appletalk, only TCP/IP.
And I and other have found that TCP/IP Filesharing between X.2{.4, I
think, not sure which rev.} or X.3 OS9 is unstable; it times out
after about 120 seconds idle.

This bug has been reported multiple times. Apple waffles between
claiming they fixed it -- just buy 10.3, and back to we're looking
at it.. when you do and it's still there. I doubt they EVER will.

Hey - I've been waiting and watching for 2 years now, not just for
Tiger, but for a new iMac to buy myself as a retirement present. When
they did the iMac upgrades on Tues. morning, I figured I'd jump in.
Tiger on a 20 iMac! I can hardly wait.
