Re: Lombard Battery

2005-12-07 Thread Sionnach Aisling
You might be able to get some use back to the battery
by cycle charging it. I would try cycle charging at
least a dozen times in succession. If that doesn't
help, I'd say it's time for a new one.

Lombard Battery

2005-12-06 Thread Caleb Cupples

Hi,

I just got my new Lombard 400 in, and the battery is completely dead. I
left the thing plugged in for about 2 1/2 hours while I was at my band
concert, and there was no change from the battery. It's still at 0%
charge, according to OS X. Is there any way to make this thing work? My
only other 'Book is a 190 with a NiMH battery, so I didn't have to worry
about it, which is why I'm asking about the Lombard's Lithium Ion battery.

Thanks in advance,
Caleb

I've used it in situation (B) and has had no effect. It was a 5+ year old

Lombard Battery/Apple Battery Reset Software

2005-06-23 Thread seahurst
I have two Lombard batteries that I'm considering using Battery Reset on.
(A) One battery charges to all five bars but dies within a few moments when
trying to use it.
(B)The other battery shows it's in the bay but doesn't charge at all.

I've read both positive and negative comments regarding success and failure of
Apple Battery Reset. One comment is that it has caused issues with charging
circuitry. I'd rather replace a battery than have a buggy charging system
problem, but am willing to take a chance if evidence sways me in that direction.

My specific question(s) is has anyone been successful with either or both
situation A and B as mentioned above?

My initial thought is that Battery Reset helps with batteries not appearing in
Wallstreet, Lombard and Clamshell models and can help with memory issues but is
not intended to do more than that.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi all

this is a quick question just to satisfy my mind.

Battery times in variuos OS, why does it vary so much? for example my
lombard in OSx.1.5 with cdrw/dvd rom (internal) fitted gives 40mins constant
use useing cds. In OS9.2.2 1hr 0mins. but in os 8.6 on the second partition
of the 20gb hdd i have fitted (was a back up Boot folder) i have just got 2
hrs use. !! why?

specs are.

400cpu 384 mbram (donated 256 ram for a 64mb chip so the other half could
use a wallstreet he got) 20gb hdd (2 x 10gb partitions) samsung dvd/cdrw
drive.

The problem is the same (badly calibrated battery) but the

What you need to do is calibrate the battery:

the screen will dim, and the "battery warning" will pop up, and a few
seconds later it will shut itself down. I go from maybe 2.5 hours down

use. I have used battery reset many times and it doesn't make any

on the battery, I get one flashing LED, so it seems like the computer
isn't properly reading the battery.

I've been running the BlueChip upgrade in my Pismo for almost 7 months and
am delighted with it. I also maxed memory out with 2 512 MB cards and a 40
GB hard drive. It is one smoking machine; the only caveat, battery life is
significantly shortened, i.e. I get about 1.5 hours on my batteries which
are about 3 years old. I'm about ready to investigate either rebuilding one
or buying a replacement. I've held off doing that since I rarely am on
battery. In my truck I have a battery adapter that plugs into a lighter
outlet. I also purchased one of those rechargable car jumper battery packs
that have a lighter outlet so I can use it when I am in our hunting camp in
the fall, great for DVD viewing.

Try looking at www.macupdate.com and searching for 'Battery Reset'.

2. What/where is BTI?
BTI is a manufacturer... you can purchase their products from places

No hardware board has been made for anything other than pre-OS X PCI
Macs... (Orange Micro... Apple made boards for the NuBus PowerMacs, but
neither is a laptop). Virtual PC is your best bet at running Windows

Since OS X automatically assigns more to a program as it needs it you
don't run out of memory or such but it does impact speed. But since
I have no grounds for comparison I can't say if 512K total (that is
the max) will make a noticeable difference. I have felt that with
many programs launched it does seem slower but it's highly subjective.

I'm not sure but I kinda remember reading at some point that if your main
battery was dead, the PRAM one wouldn't recharge. I would try it with a new
main battery, leaving it plugged for at least 48 hours to see if it helps
before trying a new PRAM.

I'm in a similar situation myself, with a Lombard I got as a
hand-me-down. I just purchased both the high profile and low profile
256 chips from Otherworld Computing. With 128 MB my Lombard runs Jaguar
surprisingly well, but it is slow. I'm also replacing the hard drive
with a larger and faster one, apparently Jaguar uses virtual memory
automatically so a small slow drive bogs it down considerably. I'm
interested to hear what others have to say about your battery issues.
My battery is most definitely dead, but I'm also replacing my PRAM
battery because my computer doesn't like to keep the date if it's
unplugged for too long. Unfortunately, nobody seems to offer a new PRAM
battery, so I'm forced to get one on eBay.

Most likely. Check the LED display on the battery (there is a
button you can push on it.)

I'm using a WallStreet with 320Mb RAM, the original 64 plus an added
256Mb. I'm running OS X. It works pretty well. I figure to get
another 256Mb soon.

The lower slot requires the low profile memory, the upper can take
either. I went with the low profile and put it into the bottom slot.
This will make adding another 256Mb easier.

I've had very good luck using Battery Reset to return batteries to life.
Will it work for you? Dunno, but the best candidates seem to batteries
that are completely unrecognized by the PB. I revived 4 or so that showed
_no_ life at all. The one battery that wouldn't revive was the one that
_did_ show up but never charged past a single blinking light.

Now mind you, a couple of those revived aren't exactly towers-of-power in
terms of useful life but at least they are once more _useful_. However
the other two are 3-4 hour runners, all-in-all quite a jump in value from
the lumps of plastic and lithium I was ready to toss into a junkbox.

KB info page here:

DL here:

For the price it's certainly worth trying, eh? ;-)

Re: Powerbook Lombard battery

2003-02-01 Thread Thomas Ethen
Has anyone taken a Pismo battery apart and if so, what holds it together? I
am about to take one apart and thought that if anyone had been there before
I would take advantage of their experience! It looks to me like there are
four pins that hold it together, but before I fire up my drill, I am putting
this to the list.

Powerbook Lombard battery

2003-02-01 Thread Majid Charania
Hi! I was wondering whether there was such a thing as Battery Recondition,
or similar utility, for a PB Lombard battery ? I know its Lithium Ion, and
"smart", but can it still be reconditioned ? Mine lasts about 2 - 2.5 hours
and it would be nice if I could squeeze out every last minute of juice from
the battery.

Thanks,

Majid Charania

Thanks for the advice, Paul. Seeing if the battery would charge in the other
bay was something that hadn't occurred to me. It didn't help, however, and
I'm assuming the battery's shot. Do not have access to other Lombards or
their batteries where I am. Guess I just need to buy a new battery.

The problem is likely either the battery or the charging circuitry in the computer. I
suggest that you see if the battery will charge in the other battery bay. Also, try
the battery in another computer and try a known good battery in your computer. This
should help you isolate the fault.

Unless there's evidence to the contrary (e.g., recent purchase), I'd
assume the battery's dead. The Lombard/Pismo LiIONs only last a couple of
years. My first battery lasted 2.5 years (as opposed to my old 5300 and
190 NiMH batteries which are still going strong, 7 years on!).

Try resetting the Power Manager

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

If that doesn't work you are probably facing one of three options

Replace Lombard DC/Charge PCB
Replace Battery
Replace AC adapter.

It would be helpful if you could see if your battery charges in another
Lombard.

lombard battery

2002-07-15 Thread PirateDyl

Hey, i'm buying a powerbook g3 lombard, which is the reason that I originally
joined this list, and it turns out that the battery might not work too well.
This is the situation:
He hasn't used it too much, and just kept it stored for over a year. I
assume that it wasn't fully charged. Therefore, it might hold 30 minutes max.
Aside from conditioning it (completely charging and discharging it)and
setting the energy saver settings lower, is there another way to get more
time out of the battery? I plan on running Mac OS X, but I hear that
batteries suffer on X. As a matter of fact, i don't know how well X would run
on a 333 lombard. any comments?
If I have to go and buy a new battery, what is the best way to get one
(so I dont get one that dies in less than a year) and cheap, so that I can
actually eat for the month?
And finally, just from the experience from those on the list, is there
anything else I need to know about buying a used powerbook?
Thanks guys.
-Dylan

The very same thing happened to my Lombard last week. I don't have any
surge issues so I guess sometimes they just stop working. My research has
found the following:

http://www.pbparts.com/
Lombard DC/Charge PCB - $89 US

http://www.powerbookguy.com
Power Supply/Charge Board for PowerBook G3 Lombard - $89.95 (with exchange)

This unit is located directly beneath the track pad. I have the service
manual (8.2 meg) and it doesn't look too complicated.

Good luck.

Re: Lombard Battery Charging Problem

2002-05-30 Thread Ryan Coleman

What you describe does not protect major rate changes (lightning, for
example, is useless to try and protect yourself from; can you imagine
what you would need to block a 5,000,000 volt bolt of lightning?
likely a $5,000USA UPS system).

It appears like the voltage could have gone beyond that of the power
supply (brick) that came with the 'book and it could have fried the
batteries.

Keep in mind, I say could. I make no promises to know what happend as
I am almost exactly on the other half of the globe from you. I could
probably answer things more accurately if I were able to investigate
your computer more. Above is only my best guess.

Lombard Battery Charging Problem

While using my Lombard 333 here in India a few days ago, there was some
fluctuation with the power supply, and although two of us had spike
protectors and surge protectors, both of our regular and clock back up
batteries stopped working, although everything had been fine before. I
don't know what it was that got through all of the protection (India is

Very easy. You remove the keyboard and the hard drive is right there. You
should maybe try to get the Lombard's service manual, so you'll know where
are the screws and how to pull the drive.

I always bought my drives from GoGoCity.com which has continually better
deals than any other resellers, including MCE. All those hard drives are the
same. They are whether from IBM, Toshiba or Hitachi, mostly.

Lombard Battery Charge Problem

2002-05-01 Thread Ken Stevens

I have a 1999 (Bronze, Lombard etc.) 400 mhz powerbook.

Both my batteries have stopped charging, the powerbook sees them they just
won't charge. I went through Apple's Knowledge Base and have tried to reset
the power manager several times by pressing the reset button with the pb off
and waiting for at least 5 seconds. Apple says this should wipe out my RAM
disk - it does, and reset the clock to 12:00 A.M., 01/01/1904 - it doesn't.
So I'm not sure the power manager has been reset.

Any suggestions? I'm pretty sure the batteries are OK.
