How important is having this battery in here if it's
mostly plugged into AC and the main battery is so-so?

I'd rather not replace it if it won't cause any
problems!

Pram Battery Change in Pismo

2005-04-10 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
I have a replacement PRAM battery for one in my Pismo, will pull main
battery and disconnect from power plug and wait a few minutes.

When I disconnect the PRAM will anything other then date and time be
effected, i.e. keychain and other programs will not be effected

I read after unplugging PRAM, old one should slide out and new one
should slide in the plastic holder, 99.9% true or wishful thinking.

Pismo PRAM Battery

I am pretty sure my PRAM battery is going on my Pismo. The system clock

The card I am referring to is the Powerbook G3

the track pad. Mounted on the card are the connectors
for the batteries in either expansion bay.

Prior to ordering the card, I did check to ensure that
nothing was covering the two (five pin) connectors
that might have caused a short.

I am on-the-road, in Malaysia, and do not have a

Thanks for your suggestions.

Charge card PRAM battery died...

2004-08-28 Thread Ronald A. Ali
Greetings,

Whe received our G3 Series Wallstreet about two months
ago. For about 2 weeks all was fine with the battery,
then it regestered as completely discharged for about
two days, then, started charging again. This
condition lasted for about four days, then we had to
keep it on the adapter to operate, and we have to
remove the battery completely in order to boot up the
G3.

I ordered a charge card, then, after about four more
days the PRAM battery started losing the date after
every power off. I ordered and received a new PRAM
battery.

My question for the list is two-fold:
Firstly, should I wait for the charge card to arrive
before I replace the PRAM battery? I'm thinking that
if I leave the G3 without any power at all for very
long, the new PRAM battery will die as well.

Secondly, since the battery has been discharged for
such a long time, is it advisable to attempt to
recharge the main battery while it is in the G#, or
should I get a separate charger to revive the main
battery?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Kind regards, ron Ali

Definitely wait for the charge card. If you replace the battery now
you just put the new battery at risk of being damaged.

If you have a separate charger then it's probably best to use it.

Do you know any procedures to turn it into a G5!!

Sell your box, fork out the cash and contact your nearest provider for a

Screen Dimming and the PRAM Battery

2004-07-23 Thread B Gardner
My 14 Wallstreet starts up with 10.2.8 Jaguar okay but the backlight
goes out during the process and stays that way until I turn it up.

Is this a PRAM battery issue?
Anybody know where I can get a replacement PRAM battery? (Part Number
616-0102 is what the PRAM battery says) It is a flat composite of six
small watch type batteries connected together and attached to a lead
and connector.

What is the normal voltage of a good PRAM battery? 6.2 volts?
Thanks,

Pismo pram battery, DIY ?

2004-05-12 Thread Jeff Greffe
Hey there !

I was wondering if it could be possible to construct an homemade Pram
battery for my (still) dead powerbook (but working on it ...). It has
been sitting on a shelf for almost 2 years, not connected and no
battery in the bay, so it must be pretty dead now.

I looked on the net and ebay, prices are ranging from 10$ for a very
used one, to 100$ for a new one !!
and since I currently reside in Taiwan at the moment, my resources to
find one here are pretty limited and shipping would be prohibitive for
such a small item. Macs are not too popular around here !

So, what are the specs for that little battery ? I am sure there is
somebody that already tried this !

Thanks !

Jeff

Sometimes the PRAM battery runs down and won't power the PRAM/clock.
In some cases the battery will recharge if the computer is left
plugged in overnight.

The guy told me laptop don't have a PRAM battery. Is that true? If it does
have a PRAM battery, I need a webpage for PRAM batteries with prices.

It does have a PRAM battery. It's a rechargeable battery but it can
eventually fail. It's harder to replace than a PRAM battery on a
desktop machine.

Also, it has a SCSI adapter since the SCSI port on the Wall street is
nonstandard. His adapter looks like a pin is missing. He said it
came looking like
that. He did not have a SCSI peripheral to demo the adapter.
It's a standard PowerPook SCSI port. The missing pin is normal.
Adapters with all the pins let you attach the Powerbook to another
computer as a disk drive.

When he did a demo on the internal zip drive, he just opened the ZIP Tools
disc window and commented on the loud sound of the ZIP drive. It
sounds like my
old ZIP, but I'm remembering that some ZIPs were recalled due to chatter
problem and for ruining zip discs.
I don't know if he had a recalled zip drive.

ZIP disk drive chatter can be a bad drive or a bad disk, it's
actually sign of one of several problems.

Then, when he unplugged the laptop from the wall, it died. He finally
confessed that the battery was not holding a charge.
So I need a website for a battery and the price.
Batteries run somewhere around $180 IIRC. Try Battery Technologies
Inc. (http://www.batterytech.com maybe).

I went to the webpage that a nice list person sent me today. It says that
this model usually goes for $500- $700. So, I'm a little nervous
about the low
price. I asked him to meet me at a Mac place to have it checked
over next week.
I have a gift certificate to that store from my User group. I told him I'd
apply my $50 gift cert toward the inspection of the laptop. Maybe
that was too
generous on my part.

He is giving me several licensed software programs that I need, but I need to
iron out these other issues. He seemed a bit too attached to receiving the
$200 right away.

Is he giving you the original disks along with any required serial
numbers or just including the installed software on the disk?

Any help and info regarding these issues would me appreciated. Wow, this is
like buying a used car.

The guy told me laptop don't have a PRAM battery. Is that true? If it

Apple laptops have PRAM batteries, so yes this one is probably dead.

Also, it has a SCSI adapter since the SCSI port on the Wall street is
nonstandard. His adapter looks like a pin is missing. He said it came
looking like
that. He did not have a SCSI peripheral to demo the adapter.
The standard Powerbook SCSI adapter has only 29 pins. A 30-pin adapter
would be used for setting up the 'book in SCSI Disk Mode. Some adapters
have a switch to allow both uses.

When he did a demo on the internal zip drive, he just opened the ZIP

Be prepared for sticker shock, as batteries are close to $150.

Wallstreets don't go for that much these days. eBay is probably a
better indicator of value now. If you're looking for something mobile,
know that you'll be spending another couple hundred right away to get
the batteries replaced. If you're just looking for something to put on
a desktop, you can leave it plugged in and not worry about the
batteries for a while.

He is giving me several licensed software programs that I need, but I

That's what I would do. I'm not sure but I think that the main battery needs
to keep at least a little charge in order for the PRAM to recharge. If your
main battery is completely dead, then the PRAM might not recharge. Did you

the guy did agree to meet me at an Apple reseller to have a diagnostic done
on the Wallstreet he is selling.

. After I found out how much it would cost to replace the battery and pram
battery, it just wasn't making much financial sense to buy it. After all was
said and done, it would cost almost as much as an iBook (last season's model at
$699). I was only wanting to spend around $300 anyway right now.

PRAM battery

2004-02-01 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hello Listers,

I am new to PowerBooks but not to Macs.

I suspect the PRAM battery has failed on my WallStreet 233 mhz
revised model with 512k cache.
The date keeps on needing to be reset every time I bootup. On my
desktop Mac this is normally corrected with a new PRAM battery which
I have fitted my self.
I have checked in many books to find what a PowerBook PRAM battery
looks like and where it is fitted inside but with out any luck.
Could someone point me in the direction for this information, and
what type of battery and cost could I expect. The desktop version is
normally under £10.00 UK and I am able to obtain one at a good

Wallstreet, pram battery, and other battery question

2004-02-01 Thread JocBr8
Ok, I test drove the Wall street PowerBook that is for sale for $200 today.
The date and time is not holding, so I assume it needs a Pram battery.

The guy told me laptop don't have a PRAM battery. Is that true? If it does
have a PRAM battery, I need a webpage for PRAM batteries with prices.

Also, it has a SCSI adapter since the SCSI port on the Wall street is
nonstandard. His adapter looks like a pin is missing. He said it came looking like
that. He did not have a SCSI peripheral to demo the adapter.

When he did a demo on the internal zip drive, he just opened the ZIP Tools
disc window and commented on the loud sound of the ZIP drive. It sounds like my
old ZIP, but I'm remembering that some ZIPs were recalled due to chatter
problem and for ruining zip discs.
I don't know if he had a recalled zip drive.

Then, when he unplugged the laptop from the wall, it died. He finally
confessed that the battery was not holding a charge.
So I need a website for a battery and the price.

I went to the webpage that a nice list person sent me today. It says that
this model usually goes for $500- $700. So, I'm a little nervous about the low
price. I asked him to meet me at a Mac place to have it checked over next week.
I have a gift certificate to that store from my User group. I told him I'd
apply my $50 gift cert toward the inspection of the laptop. Maybe that was too
generous on my part.

He is giving me several licensed software programs that I need, but I need to
iron out these other issues. He seemed a bit too attached to receiving the
$200 right away.

Any help and info regarding these issues would me appreciated. Wow, this is
like buying a used car.

Hi John to greatly simplify the equation just go to any Apple resellers
with the precise version of your Wallstreet and they will sell you the
proper battery on top of it they will be glad to give you some tip as

Jocelyn here are my 2 cents; You could always get the serial number and
go yourself to a Mac Resellers, get it check 1) To make certain that it
is not stolen good (in that case no Apple resellers will repair it) 2)
To know exactly it's age and who was the original owner. If the sellers
does seems to eager to get his $$$ be careful, it's always better to
walk away with your $$ than a Mac that is going to become a headache
over time and that will end up costing 2 or 3 times as much just in
parts.

Good Luck

The Wallstreet does have a rechargeable PRAM battery. If the main battery is
dead, then it may explains why the PRAM is dead. I think you need a good
battery in order for the PRAM to recharge, but I'm not 100% sure. IIRC, the
SCSI pin is normal. There are 30 pins on the Wallstreet while on regular
cables, it's 29 pins. Again, this is off memory, so I could be wrong.

Wallstreet don't fetch $500-$700. Do a search on eBay for completed items.
They go from around $200 to $400 depending on the condition and the
accessories that come with it.

For a battery, there is laptops-battery.com. They have Wallstreet batteries
with higher capacity cells for $104:

MAC Re: Pismo PRAM Battery

2004-01-30 Thread James G \Jim\ Hardwick
20040130

I had not noticed that the PBFIXIT battery was used, as stated in
the 'more details' link; those sly beggars!

The appropriate part for the Pismo is Part Number 922-3829, and the
same battery is used in both bronze keyboard and firewire
powerbooks. There is a picture link in one of the discussions that
I gave the URL to:
http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/.Pictures/take-apart-pismo/pismo_takeapart_03.jpg
I've verified that the PRAM battery in my Pismo looks just like that.

The same part number is given on the datavis page, at:
http://www.datavis.com/webapp/commerce/command/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=430971prmenbr=2000
and the price is $25. Apparently new and unused, and Apple brand.
Although the picture does not look quite right (I'd be more inclined
to trust the part number than the picture), perhaps the battery
unfolds?

I don't meant to always be a bearer of bad news...

The # on the Datavis site is not the same as the one on the pbfixit
site. If you verified the # on the Apple site, then pbfixit must use
their own.

But one other note--Datavis says they are Apple auth, but that they
only ship to 3 states???

And they do not show Wallstreet batts, growl,

Those still seem to be rather steep prices, just for a PRAM battery. I
can't help but wonder if one were to disassemble the apple battery, if
there might be some obvious components that could be replaced. Perhaps
they used a standard rechargable cell that you could duct-tape in place?

the datavis reference, but I was reluctant to post the long URL to take
you directly to the page. The URL is given below.

Apple's support website calls these things backup batteries, as well
as PRAM batteries, and there is a handy Apple article that gives the
stock numbers for various ones:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86181

The appropriate part for the Pismo is Part Number 922-3829, and the

I don't know and I'm not willing to take mine apart to find out. It

so that's affirmation that it's the right battery, despite the
incongruous picture. It also look VERY easy to install, and I
certainly wouldn't be paying a tech $80 to replace it for me when/if
mine goes.

Lombard PRAM Battery

2003-10-31 Thread Alan C. Magnus
Hi All,

Does the Lombard, 1999 PowerBook, use a PRAM battery? If so, where in
the unit is it located and is it easy to get at?

Thanks

It does and it's a rechargeable one at that. IIRC, the PRAM battery is
located on the right side, next to the DVD-ROM expansion module, near the
keyboard.

Pismo pram battery

Is the pram battery automatically recharged in a Pismo?

If not what is the life of the battery?

sellers says the pram battery might need to be
replaced.
1. What is a PRAM battery?
2. What does it do?
3. Where exactly is it located in the computer?

Thanks in advance.

It's a little battery, about half the size of a regular AA battery. It keeps
some settings in the PRAM, like which partition to boot from, the number of
time the menu item will blink when you select it in a menu, how fast the
text caret will flash, etc. Some of those settings are used only in the Mac
OS 9 or earlier, not in OS X, though. You can find the battery pretty easily
in a BW, on the motherboard, not very far from the end of the PCI slots, if
I recall correctly.

Re: Pismo battery loose in battery bay--normal and PRAM battery?

2002-06-15 Thread Dwight Hines

My battery is snug in my Pismo. That's all I can tell you. There
probably is a problem. Does it charge?

Anyway my battery doesn't hold much of a charge after almost two years,
so it probably isn't too much of a loss.

 Jim

Mine is loose from front to back, but it snug vertically.

Also, where is cheapest and quickest place to get the PRAM battery for a
Pismo?

My regular battery, albeit loose, holds a charge well and has done so for 2
years. I do use battery amnesia every couple of months or so.

Can't help, but the prices are ludicrous ($40-50). An older, cheaper 5300
or 1400 battery works (only one cell), but will not last as long, and
won't sleep for long without battery or AC. But only cost me $US3 each.
They have the same internal connector.

Lombard PRAM battery

2002-05-26 Thread Steph Gray

I've had my (US model) Lombard/333 since January 2000 and it has served me
faithfully. However, recently it has been losing the volume settings on a
regular basis - after resetting the PRAM, I'm coming to the conclusion the
PRAM battery may be nearing the end of its life. Unfortunately, replacements
seem to be $50+, plus shipping to the UK. Before I part with the cash, can
anyone suggest other options or sources of cheaper alternatives? Is it a
false economy to buy one of the 'used' PRAM batteries advertised for around
$25?

thanks,

Steph
