sticky drawer on Pismo DVD drive
I've been trying to sort out a Lombard for my father in law and I have a 6x DVD drive that seems to work OK once you get the drive closed. The drawer binds as I try and close it, sometimes I have to open it and clse it several times before I can get it to close all the way. Once it's closed it works fine. There seems to be a lot of friction in the slides so either something's jumped the track or something needs lubrication. If I can't find anything obvoiusly out of line I'm thinking of a little silicon lube on the slides. Any suggestions? Thanks Andrew in Ann Arbor technology is the answer, what was the question? -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Pismo DVD Drive
I know I could buy her a new DVD drive for the Pismo, either s/hand via eBay or even (at considerable expense...) new. But this is an old machine, and I'm not sure I want to spend too much money keeping it fettled. The other possibility that's occurred to me is to buy an external firewire optical drive. I believe LaCie do one (several?). Has anyone got any experience of running an external firewire DVD drive on an older PB? - Pismo or Lombard via a firewire port in a card? Tom Burke First off you may be able to fix your DVD drive. If the laser reader gets dust on it the drive will run as yours does but won't be able to read the data on the disk. You can try either a CD lens cleaner disk or one of those small cans of compressed air sold for camera lens etc. This has fixed many drives thought dead. I have a Pioneer DVD RW 105(A05) drive which I put in a Firewire case. ADS Pyro brand never had any problem with this combo. It is seen as an Apple Super drive by both my desktop and Pismo machines. With Jaguar I needed some hacks for everything to work. Panther everything works with no hacks on my Apple desktop. Even iDVD and DVD player work fine. best of luck. Will S Check the system profiler and see if it is an LG drive...I had one in this Pismo and one day back in July, it suddenly stopped mounting DVD's but did mount CD's...Called A/C and they tried firmware update etc...no joy there so a kind tech sent me a replacement..also an LG..Now, after playing only about 12 DVD's since mid July, this one is doing the exact same thing...It whirrs and stops ..What a POS!!! I do have an external LaCie burner (Pioneer 106-D) that works great but I need the internal for the Pismo. I will try the air can and see if that works...If I do have to get another drive, Iunderstand that the Matsushita's are much better..However I am leery of trying to tear the case apart to put a new drive inside of the current carrier...If you have any success, please let us know...I will do likewise... The LG model of drive has documented problems with failing way too soon (the Matsushita drive doesn't appear to have the problem). I had similar symptoms when my drive started going south. Well, I never had applecare so I guess it's going to be an expensive fix. Looking on the web, it appears the replacement is $130 up. OTOH I've seen two combo drives for $200 $300 (http://www.wegenermedia.com/pismocombo.htm) and I saw an article on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/PB_G3/oem_combo_drives/build_guide/build_combo_drive.html for using a Matsushita UJDA 710 drive as an alternative (about $100 on ebay) tempting. Has anyone any other suggestions or thoughts on this matter? And how do I explain it to the wife? Thanks Pete another LG victim. Hi- I just replaced a Pismo DVD drive (actually a working Matsushita model) with a UJDA-720. The switch was simple, but I had to drill another hole because the Pismo faceplate had different mounts than the HP the drive came from. Anyway, the drive was $52 on eBay - just look in the laptop components section and be patient. This one had a picture of the actual drive, so I knew it was a Matsushita mechanism. Apple System Profiler recognizes the drive, but disc burning and iTunes aren't supported. Toast, however, will work with the drive so now I have a working combo drive in the wife's Pismo. BTW, I also tested the drive in my Lombard and I could burn with Toast there, too. My next step is to work on the disc burner support file so I can do things from Finder and iTunes. I didn't see that one in a quick run thru xlr8, but I can do more looking today. --- JSH webmail -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Pismo DVD drive not recognising CD's
Any bright ideas as what the problem is and how to fix it? My 3 year old pismo (OS 9.22, 382 Mb Ram, stock 20Mb HD) has stopped recognising CD's. I put a CD or CD-R in the drive, close the unit, the drive spins up, spins down about a second later and that's it. Checking in sys profiler shows 'no media' and the eject button on the unit still works. I've tried with a few CD's, pulled the drive out and reseated it but no joy. However, it happily reads DVDs with no problems. Model is LG (DVD-ROM DRN8080B rev LAB8) with driver version 1.4.7. I have not loaded any new software or tweaked the hardware for a long time. My workaround of using fetch to copy from a linux box over the network is rather painful and only works with mac disks. Suggestions gratefully appreciated. Re: Pismo DVD drive not recognising CD's
I had this exact same problem and figuring that the mechanism was blown, bought a new mechanism for it from Wegener Media. They mentioned this happens a lot with the DRN8080B mechanism, and they've found a new revision of the drive which is less problematic. As it's working perfectly now with the new mechanism, I'm pretty certain that the diagnosis was correct. Apparently it's something that LG has addressed, but obviously not soon enough for those of us who were blessed with LG mechanisms. I think the total damage was around $100 for a new mechanism, and it only took about 3 minutes to install. Probably the easiest (and least expensive!) fix I've done for my Pismo to date. Hope it helps. Tom On 14/7/03 11:36 PM, Pete Gregory [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Any bright ideas as what the problem is and how to fix it? The LG model of drive has documented problems with failing way too soon (the Matsushita drive doesn't appear to have the problem). I had similar symptoms when my drive started going south. Since I'd guess you're not even covered by AppleCare, you may be out of luck (if you are still - even barely - within your AppleCare warranty, RUN your Pismo to the closest Apple service provider for an exchange of the drive. Heck, call Apple first to ensure that they know of the problem occurring within your warranty!). From my own and others reports of how Apple handles the replacement, you may get another (possibly refurbished?) LG drive, or if you get really lucky, you may get the Matsushita drive. Ryan, Just curious...what are the so many problems that you have with your Pismo? Mike Kochkodin Oh let me count the ways: (Day.month.year) Computer purchased on 12.1.2001 27.4.2001 Battery will not hold charge. Replaced 5.11.2001 LG-8080B (DVD) stopped mounting DVDs, CDs shortly after. Replaced 13.8.2002 Battery will not hold charge. Replaced along with non-faulty cord 17.12.2002 During my applecare call I stated that the Batt wouldn't hold a charge AND stopped reading DVD/CDs. Applecare said I will have the tech look at the motherboard. BATTERY REPLACED ONLY 03.01.2003 DVD still broke from before, sent it in again. DVD Replaced 3 battery replacements, 2 DVD replacements 20.2.2003 I used the S-Video out (for the first time) and my 512 Dimm turned into a 256 Dimm. Reseating the DIMM and zapping PRAM fixes it for a few hours, until it freezes hard. OS9 Boot says Built in memory tests failed. Contact service technician. The ram was problem free for 1.5 years with latest firmware and running 10.2.1 now. Once I tried my battery that wouldn't hold a charge in a friends Pismo. The batt Worked fine. I think I will make a personal appearance with my repair history at an applestore this summer. The problem is that my repairs have been made in Europe and America, so my entire repair history isn't on the applecare computers (I am guessing). Sigh, my dvd drive had to be replaced and under AppleCare, they sent me another LG :( So far so good...but AppleCare is expired. Actually, I think it _is_ a problem with the brand of drive. My LG has failed twice, and both times it has been replaced by a LG. Once my Battery died at the same time. At least I have Applecare till Jan. '03. Hi all If the prismo use's the same drive's as the lombard, look for smartdisk drives in firewire caseing's they are cheap on ebay at the moment, and most of them are Teac branded drives inside. These make very good swap in/out drives in the old caseing's as the connector cards have the same interface.( i have a cd rw in my lombard out of one of these case's) Victoria. Questions regarding Pismo DVD drive
Hi all, I have the following Pismo: PBG3 400MHz, 12GB HDD, OS9.2.2 10.2.3 I have encountered the problem that not all DVDs are able to be loaded (mounted). When I insert a movie DVD, the MacOS normally recognises it and then loads the DVD Player application. However, some DVDs are not able to be mounted and the DVD drive just sits there, reading the disc. Nothing appears on the Finder. The same DVDs mount and play fine on new PC laptops running Windows Me. The same DVDs also play fine on a standalone DVD player. I suspect some problem with the DVD drive. Any ideas? It stopped in one day, in the middle of swapping disks, in fact. The last one to read required that I press in on the door the whole time. If I released pressure, the CD would stop reading, and the system would pause until I pressed in on the door again. We enjoy watching the few DVDs we have on 9.2.2, and have had only intermittent problems. I have learned, however, to always reboot the comuter before watching, and to make sure that the player is the only thing open. That said, I forgot on Saturday, and let the kids watch an hour of Reksio cartoons, with about a half a dozen apps open in the background. :-) I had hoped that Apple would fix the drive without complaints, but I begin to doubt that. Re: Pismo DVD drive problem
What you are describing, has been explained to me as a natural process of DVDs. It was explained to me like this. DVDs can have multiple layers. At some point, the laser has to switch layers. It is at this point that the pause occurs. The fact that it's at the same place every time suggests this to me. So, has the advice I've been given correct, or am I misleading another unlucky soul as I have been mislead? :-) In the old days you had double-sided DVD's (written data on each side) which did require the lasers to switch... Now though almost all DVD's (besides something like an superdrive made DVD) are made as dual-layered DVD's: if I remember correctly the laser focuses itself just a little differently to be able to read the layer it wants. If you're using a double sided DVD, it shouldn't hang but rather spit it out with a message asking you to flip it over and reinsert it (I have an old stargate one that does this). The laser refocusing in newer ones shouldn't even be noticeable at all. Unfortunately Jon you're kind of screwed- DVD's in OSX are a dream, but in OS9 they leave a lot to be desired. I honestly (and I tried, believe me) could never really get it to work using 9.0 and below (gave up and used my PC). It's really pretty harmless if you get your update from a reliable source- essentially just changing a small setting that keeps it from only allowing one region. Pismo DVD drive problem
Hi- I'm new to the list. I discovered it while online, looking for info regarding my newly-dead DVD drive. I hope I'm not asking a FAQ, but I couldn't find one that would answer this sort of question. My DVD drive started giving me problems back in January (about two weeks after the warranty ran out). It would give me problems reading disks, usually either freezing the computer or simply not mounting it. It seemed to be fixed by changing back to 9.1 for a while, but still reared its ugly head on occasion. When 9.2.2 came out, I upgraded without much problem, but the problem still showed up on occasion. In the past two weeks, it got worse, but this weekend, it went wild, in in the process of swapping CDs, it stopped entirely, and hasn't read a CD since Friday. It seems to read DVDs fine, but not CDs. From my explorations on the web, this is a common problem. My question is this. What is the likelyhood of Apple fixing this for me, or for my having to pay for this. It sure seems to me that it is a manufacturer's defect. Am I correct? What should I do? Some Pismo uses solved the problem with a CD/DVD drive replacement, others replaced the motherboard, some found that swapping two non-working drives worked again if swapped between machines, etc. However, there may be nothing wrong with your DVD, it may be the Prefs. The DVD preferences can become corrupted, allowing DVD's to still work, but crashing when CD's are inserted.
