Re: [Audyssey] Entombed Query

2009-10-09 Thread shaun everiss
well its been a long road jayson.
I myself am proud with the fact I and others have managed to get this far with
a project like that.
Though I will be sorry when we're finnished.
this thing has taken the best part of the last 2 years to preduce and well once
its done.
At 04:12 p.m. 9/10/2009, you wrote:
I'm finishing up the engine with Entombed right now and working on more
content. It will go to beta soon. As for the actual release, I'm not sure.
Some of the new content is fairly complex - like new spells, but it will go
faster than the majority of the alpha. I'm hoping to have the next alpha
version ready by the end of October, but I'm not sure yet. The first beta
version will follow that and will focus on stability issues. Then hopefully
it'll be release time!

Cheers!

[Audyssey] entombed...what the heck? rofl

2009-10-09 Thread Johnny Tai
So I finished my first round with the game, and started a second

mob came in and I fool you not, the mob's my first char...and worst of all,
she's got all my first char's stats and eqs...my new char was dead the first

Wondering if that's a bug or some humorous move on the maker's part.

Dang...I think I'm addicted to this game, and it's not even a full

Also, I've noticed the swords and arrows are very powerful, while clubs and

Also it'd be nice if our 'found team mates' can be of different genders, or

No, it's not a bug.

If your character dies they come back to haunt you as a zombi.

You think you've got problems! I have an ogre fighter mage with maxed skills
in clubs and plate armour wielding two basalt clubs running around, I
meet him, I die, and the zombi hoard grows!

I would have thought playing over a wireless connection to play

On the other platforms, surely when one has a band online they all

Re: [Audyssey] roling bolders in mota?

2009-10-09 Thread Bryan Peterson
It could be like that old NES game StarTropics if anybody on list has ever
heard of it. There were a lot of elements taken from Indiana Jones and
similar stories, arrow traps, spontaneous earthquakes that you had to jump
to get away from and, in pride of place, an invincible enemy called a
Megaton. This was basically little more than a giant bowling ball that had
its own corridor to itself and would roll up and down the hall when you got
to it, obviously trying to crush you. And of course unlike a lot of the
other traps, which would just hurt you if you touched them, touching a
Megaton meant instant death, sort of like those earthquakes I mentioned
earlier. The trick was to move along the hall and hide in little alcoves
that were spaced along the wall. There were only three Megatons in the
entire game and the third of them was actually inteligent to a degree, not
to mention fast. That meant that you couldn't just run and hide from it and
actually had to strike it with your weapon when it got close to you, which

Rolling boulders? Hmm. Sounds like fun! Then again, I just hate getting
that run down feeling, or the situation of being between a rock and a hard
place. (grin) Although I can't wait till the game comes out, I will. I
know it'll be good and worth the wait. I also know that the testers will
have fun while helping to make a great addition to the blind computer
gaming community. Then, once you get past this one and Raceway, and start
supplying us with your own creations, hopefully as you envision them,
we'll be blown away, and come back for more.

Hi Nicol,
Yes, on some of the higher levels there will probably be rolling boulders
in the game. It is just another detail, trap, etc I haven't gotten around
to adding yet. Level 1, with all do respect, is just a preview of the
game. It is not meant to be representative of every type of enemy, trap,
etc you may find in the game.

Smile.

Do you plan to add roling bolders to mota?
It would be fun to try escape a roling bolder.
I think a good sound for a roling bolder is a sound similar to the
sound in ten pin alley, the sound of the ball rolling to the pins.
I do not expect you to use the sound in ten pin alley but a simular
sound would rock. Please Note: This email and its contents are subject

Hey,
maybe I'm just weird but if I were a plumber and loved my job I would call my

and at work and all the time and it would be fun fun fun! And then you could
take breaks and go on vacation for a week or so and do other fun things then
ccome back to your fun job!
When I start my job as an access technology trainer I think I will enjoy it so
much I will want to do it until I'm 90 or more. Teaching people to use

One thing I notice is that the sounds are limitted...it'd be very nice to
have separate sounds based on spells/moves/weapons, so an arrow would
sounds different than a sword.
Also, I've noticed the swords and arrows are very powerful, while clubs
and staffs are rather weak when compared...might wanna balance that a bit?

Also it'd be nice if our 'found team mates' can be of different genders,
or at least, with a different vocalization so not the whole group, cept
the pet, sound alike.

I am really looking forward to seeing more spells...the lightning is
getting a bit old, even though it is very cool.

I used to think like you. However that was when I was in my twenties.
I'm not sure how old you are, but without making an assumption, I
imagine you are quite younger than me. While I see where you are coming
from with this statement, there is the possibility of burn out. And if
you reach burn out level, trust me, you won't care about the computer.
have you or anyone else wondered why I stopped doing ACB Radio 80's
music shows, why I stopped doing as much gaming as I used to? It's
because I was doing all that, plus trying to spend time with my wife and
kids and I was getting burned out.

So now I have an even balance and I've prioritized on what I want to
spend time on. Sure I use Twitter and Facebook. Sure I play games still
and on occasion do some recordings. But in addition to working over 50
hours per week on a slow week, I still find time to spend with my kids
and family. It's meant that I've had to cut way back on some of the
things I wanted to do and some things I don't do at all any more, but
the rewards are worth it.

So just some thoughts on a Friday morning.

[Audyssey] seeking very basic chess instructions

2009-10-09 Thread Ann Tate
Hi folks,

I'm trying to get bakc in to playing chess after being away from it for
quite some time. Is there somewhere I can download a very, very basic chess
manual or instructions. I'm not looking for fancy strategies at this point,
just something in plain English that I can quickly use to remind myself of
basic chess moves, which pieces can move which ways, etc.

Also, is there anywhere, and with any program preferably free or an extremly
low cost, that a totally blind person can play chess online with others?

Thanks.

Some questions for you in order to get you started playing again:

What screen reader do you use? If it is JAWS, I can send you a free chess
program that you can play against, as well as connect to the Internet to
play against others, although I have not tried this feature out as of yet.

Do you have an adapted chess set for blind people to use, rather than having
to use speech to explore a chess board during the game?

I can also help you, probably one on one, as to which pieces move where and
the basic rules of the game. Or, there is a totally free correspondence
course, either on audio cassettes or in braille, available from the Hadley
School for the Blind. All course materials are yours to keep after you
complete the course, including a very nice adapted chess set.

Re: [Audyssey] Entombed Query

2009-10-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Oh, I'd say Entombed has a long long ways to go before it sees a 1.0
stable release. Not surprising really seeing as it is a difficult genre
of game to program given the amount of programming and development
involved. The thing to keep in mind is that whoever said it would be
ready by fall of 2009 was only speculating at a release date, and
apparently underestimated the time involved in creating the game.

Cheers!

those lines. I do hope we'll see more titles from them in the future. THe
ones they have out now have sort of lost their appeal for me.

Hey,
maybe I'm just weird but if I were a plumber and loved my job I would call
my wife during the day and tell her to block the toilets and sinks so I
could come home and fix them. If you really love your job you would want
to do it at home and at work and all the time and it would be fun fun fun!
And then you could take breaks and go on vacation for a week or so and do
other fun things then ccome back to your fun job!
When I start my job as an access technology trainer I think I will enjoy
it so much I will want to do it until I'm 90 or more. Teaching people to
use computers is fun and fixing them is fun and testing new software is
fun! And ssince it is so much fun for me I am going to ask my employer if
I can have extra work to do at home because my work will be fun fun fun
for me me me yayayayaaya! yes work is fun!

Re: [Audyssey] l-works

2009-10-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,

As has been said before there really is such a thing as too much of a
good thing. When you are young, something is brand new to you, it is
easy to get caught up in the moment. It seams easy to believe you will
always feel the enthusiasm, excitement, and absolute pleasure you feel
when first working on something you enjoy. I know all too well what it
feels like when taking those first steps towards something you always
wanted to do, and I know what it feels like after it burns out like an
old candle. It is often hard to believe that something like that can
happen, but it does if you aren't careful.

When I was 19 I began attending Wright State University in Dayton Ohio.
At that time I knew I really wanted to become a programmer. As you might
have guessed my main reason was I wanted to create accessible games I
could play, but I was happy enough to write ordinary software too. The
first time I wrote a simple program in C++ I was over the moon. It
wasn't long after that I wrote a few simple text based games in C++, and
I was crazy about programming. I was willing and ready to program
anything and everything I could. So what happened?

Well, after college it didn't take me long to discover the kind of
programming that really pays you money is pretty boring and dull stuff
like databases to keep track of employee records, programs to generate
reports, a web site for some church/company, whatever. All and all it
can be fairly dull and ordinary work. Certainly not the glorious and
exciting profession I once believed it to be.

So in 2004 I began seriously writing accessible games. That was
exciting, interesting at first, and I enjoyed it for a while. However,
after I took over the games from Alchemy, I began to lose the excitement
in the thing. There are several reasons why I'm not quite as excited as
I once was about writing accessible games.

First, as with any kind of job where you deal with the public there is
lots of stress involved. People have complained they want their money
back because the game is taking too long to create. People complain they
don't like this or that about the game. People continuously request
feature x they feel should be in the game and currently isn't. Some
people complain the game costs too much. Needless to say practically
from the first day I took over the games I've had to put up with a lot
of needless wining, nagging, and complaining that I didn't want or ask for.

Second, the pay down right sucks. I don't write these games precisely
for money, mainly for the enjoyment of it, but it doesn't hurt to pay
the developer something for his time and money spent working on said
game. I have sounds and music to pay for. I have to cover operating
expenses such as a web server, web site, whatever. When you deduct
operating expenses as well as taxes I don't end up with a whole heck of
a lot for my time. If that wasn't bad enough there is always a few jerks
out there who will happily hack and crack said game and pass it around
to their fellow hacker buddies. They might as well walk up to me and
flip me the bird for the amount of respect they show me.

Finally, I've given up a lot of my personal time to see that Mysteries
of the Ancients and Raceway get done in something like a timely manner.
Working on those games day in and day out instead of watching tv,
playing my guitar, going swimming with the family, etc is a major drain
on me emotionally and physically. No matter how much I loved programming
before I'm beginning to go just a bit crazy sitting in front of a
computer 24/7 without getting involved with some outside interests that
aren't computer related. I still love computers, still like programming,
but I don't want to be chained to it like a prisoner with a ball and
chain. As soon as Mysteries of the Ancients is done I'm going to take
some serious time away from the computer to indulge myself in
non-computer enjoyments. I need time away from the computer to recharge
my batteries, to think about new projects, and to hopefully regain some
of the excitement and energy i had for writing accessible games to begin
with.

The moral of this story is simply this. Chasing the perfect job is like
chasing the perfect girl. The guy who dreams of getting a woman that
looks like Pamela Anderson will in all likelihood end up with some
average ordinary looking chick who lives around town. It is easy to get
burned out, lose sight of your excitement and enthusiasm, because real
life isn't like your dreams.

The bright eyed programmer who dreamed of creating the next best selling
video game probably will in likelihood find a job managing some
companies web site, MySQL database, or creating report writing programs.
If he writes games on the side that is alright, but only the best of the
best get hired to mainstream game companies. That reality has a way of
shooting your dreams right in the foot, and it is wise to keep that in

And then the game started and, to my horror, I got me bow and arrows and no

Right out of the door, three goblins await...me dead...

Exactly. LOL. It reminds me of some of the games in Mario Paint, which
included among other things that flyswatting game where the flies invaded

Mach 1 log for 10/9/2009 By Jim Kitchen

Your time for 150 laps on the Kirtland Dirt Mile Oval Track is, 59 minutes 44 point 7 7 1 seconds.
Which sets a new record!
The record was 0 point 0 0 0 seconds.
By No One on 9/9/2009.
You finished the race with 10.15 gallons of fuel.

BTW because the Kirtland track is pretty short, I only had to make 1 pit stop.

FYI I myself would not try this with the keyboard. It would be too tough on

Hi Josh,

I have been programming games since 1980, blind accessible games since 1990,
and I am not tired of it yet. Yes, I do what I want to do because my games are
all free, but I still have received my complement of complaints and criticisms
as well as suggestions for my games. But hey, I still love the challenge of
figuring out the programming for said game and coming up with something that I

Re: [Audyssey] seeking very basic chess instructions

2009-10-09 Thread dark

Hello Anne.

It won't let you bplay online against someone, but in all other respects
spoonbill software's chess program is exactly what your looking for.

It comes with comprehensive rules and move lists, and you can play against
the computer. it's also absolutely free!

I believe Thom ward has currently got it hosted on his site at
http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/, but you can also go directly to
the developer's website at
http://www.omninet.net.au/~irhumph/blindgamers.htm and send him an E-mail
requesting the game, he apparently enjoys talking to players which is
why he does things this way.

You can also check out his other games there (I personally do rather like
his Cribbage, hearts and Uno games).

His stuff is also free.

if you want something more in the manner of a chess analiser, coach, and
board layout printer, you can also try the Kchess programs from
http://www.arkangles.com/

These aren't free, but come with many more features than Ian Humphries,
pluss are probably better in terms of teaching you the game. You can't play
online with them, but you could send attachments directly from the program
to other players and thus play by E-mail or chat program.

Re: [Audyssey] seeking very basic chess instructions

Wow!

the Americans are once again proved much ahead of England in terms of Vi
acdcess.

I had to pay an exorbitant price for an adapted chess set which came with no
materials at all.

Also, while the pieces are very tactile, the contrast on them is horrible!
It's more like slightly light brown vs rather darker brown than black and
white, which is really annoying if I want to use my vision as well.

I've certainly seen better adapted chess sets than this, but once again
showing the Rnib's inherent stupidity, this is the only chess set they
sell!

Some questions for you in order to get you started playing again:

What screen reader do you use? If it is JAWS, I can send you a free chess
program that you can play against, as well as connect to the Internet to
play against others, although I have not tried this feature out as of yet.

Do you have an adapted chess set for blind people to use, rather than
having to use speech to explore a chess board during the game?

I can also help you, probably one on one, as to which pieces move where
and the basic rules of the game. Or, there is a totally free
correspondence course, either on audio cassettes or in braille, available
from the Hadley School for the Blind. All course materials are yours to
keep after you complete the course, including a very nice adapted chess
set.

Re: [Audyssey] Entombed Query

2009-10-09 Thread dark
It is funny, when i started looking into audiogames I sort of had a sense
that the main developers were Bsc, Gma, Lworks, Draconis and Vip gameszone.

Now, two of those have virtually dropped off the map as far as new games go.
I admit, i could be (and hope I am), surprised again, --- as I have been on
several occasions when a games company i thought wasn't working anymore have
pulled something great out of the bag, like Gma and vip mud, or indeed
(much as it pains me to admit it), Usa games when Tom first released a
stable version of stfc.

In all the time i've been playing audiogames though sinse 2006, Bsc games
have only made one rellease, and that was troopanum 2 in Spanish. While
I admit only a short time ago I'd have probably said the same thing about
Gma, It does seem Bsc games have vanished a bith.

while I understand Justin has a job, it is rather a shame that there's
absolutely no! way he can develope games at all, even if at a slower
pace the way people like Liam (and indeed Jason of Entombed), are doing
currently.

the stuff they developed was top of the range a few years ago, now
though, I'd have to say in terms of commercial companies their being
slightly superseeded by the work of people like Che martin and Liam.

That's why though I'd love to see another release from them, --- to up the
anti a bit more.

Yes there is a reason.

You have to use the equipment menue with E, and click on the body part, ---

The game will display any items the character can put there, and you can

this counts for weapons too, just look at your character's hands.

Personally, I found a goblin thief to have better survival value than a
goblin warrior, sinse obviously you've got hide and sneak attack to fall
back on.

My goblin thief was actually not doing too badly, - that was until he
came up against my old zombified hard as nales Ogre! that ended the game in
pretty short order.

So I thought...it'd be kind of fun to make a goblin char. And I did...and
it appears I can't be anything but warrior or thief. And that's fine, so I
picked warrior...I mean, after all, it's always fun to play a warrior...
And then the game started and, to my horror, I got me bow and arrows and
no skill for them--so okay, lets set out and maybe we'll grab something
useable when we kill something?

Right out of the door, three goblins await...me dead...

Anyone know of a goblin that's unluckier than mine?

That's really not that unusual for a single developer. It is hard to

No, the adapted chess set does indeed have nails on the black pieces, my
only problem is to anyone who has a modicum of vision the black pieces
aren't very black! This doesn't just make it irritating for me visually, but
also it's pants if I wish to play against a fully sited person.

I'm all for sets accessible for totally blind players, but does this
mean we have to exclude the sense of site entirely? There are afterall quite
a lot of people who play chess who are fairly keen on using it.

I must admit, it's something which I like the idea of. The notion of writing
a set of logical rules as ontology which then has noticeable effects is
really quite appealing.

Were I not already trying to write a Phd thesis, not to mention various
hobbies including writing other things, fairly serious performing and light

Maybe in a few years when and If i finish my phd I stil might try.

Oh btw, a friend of mine is a professional web designer and did an msc in

I am vaguely aware that it's not something which can be learnt over night.

get passed end user complaints, copyright issues, whatever.

Hi Josh,

I have been programming games since 1980, blind accessible games since
1990, and I am not tired of it yet. Yes, I do what I want to do because
my games are all free, but I still have received my complement of
complaints and criticisms as well as suggestions for my games. But hey,
I still love the challenge of figuring out the programming for said game
and coming up with something that I an others enjoy playing. So don't
give up the dream.
