Re: [Audyssey] BGT problem!
Hi Hayden, Well, Notepad lacks a number of features that other text editors out there have. For example, the text editor I often use on Linux called Gedit has a spell checker, a dictionary, can edit multiple text files at once, and a number of other tools and plugins that just makes it an all around better text editor than Notepad. When it comes to programming being able to open up multiple source files at once really really comes in handy. Of course, there are Windows text editors just as good. A text editor like Ultraedit has a number of features that makes it better than Notepad for programming. One it has a goto option that allows you to jump directly to a specific line number which is helpful for debugging. Ultraedit can handle multiple source files at once rather than having to launch a new copy of the program every time you want to open an extra file in the editor. Ultraedit can import and export text files to and from Windows, Mac, and Linux which is a huge advantage when sharing text files between different operating systems. Need I continue? Bottom line, Notepad is very limited. It doesn't have nearly the features and capabilities of other text editors like Textpad, Ultraedit, Gedit, you name it. It is pretty much a very simplistic text editor without a lot of features, and if you plan on using a text editor for programming you'll eventually find there are just features you need to have that Notepad dosn't have and can't supply. Re: [Audyssey] topspeed3 impressions
Hi, The thing I miss the most is the voiceovers; some how I do prefer those in TS2. Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Jorge Gonçalves Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 11:22 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] topspeed3 impressions Hi friends. I was trying the game since yesterday and my impressions are very positive. The game play is much realistic and fun. It's really now closer to the efects of a good racing game. And the new weather conditions and surfaces are very very cool. I just have one comment: I think it's approaching to something that would be my dream which is a racing game with a season mode with points system for example knowing that there are 7 computer controled players, it would be fun to make a season going through a lot of tracks and giving points according to the position in the race for example, 10 for the winner, 8 for the second, 6 for the third etc. And the funniest would be that we could edit the names of other players so like that the developpers wouldn't have to worry about that. It would be fun to have a season mode, with random weather conditions for each race so we would have to compit in difrent circustances in the run for title of Top Speed champion. Maybe it's only a dream but there are a lot of main stream games like that with a season mode: it would be fun to have one like that for us! But out of that, i think that the game play is much much better and thank you very much to those who developed this game! Hi, I listened to the royalty free music on your sight, and seriously, your effort, Philip, was just excellent. A question, though. If I ever plan to purchase the game, are the tracks indivisual? My question is actually I looked at the resellers, and I don't want to buy the pack in 1 go, just look at this CD, and decide, but it has clashing destonys when I clicked the first yes on sounddogs. So, even if it says for an example, clashing destonies, and hero's quest, if I click clashing destonies and buy the music, will I get all of the grand adventure in the CD and not just clashing destonies? Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.
Hi Shaun, Well, there is nothing wrong with Using DirectX 8 as far as that goes. The Windows version of the G3D engine is completely based on the DirectX 8 API and so is BGT. DirectX 8 still has a use in the gaming world although the mainstream companies are looking at XInput, XAudio2, etc, the new API libs, but they perform basically the same on a 64-bit OS as a 32-bit OS. The real advantage here in using a 64-bit processor is being able to accurately render 3d graphics, physics modeling, or anything else that requires heavy number crunching. Especially, if you need to deal with very large floating point numbers for very precise calculations. For example, a flight symulator like Microsoft FSX could use the extra processing power not just for the realistic 3d graphics, but to perform all that real time physics modeling that goes on behind the seens to truly emulate flying this or that aircraft. That stuff is extremely CPU intensive and requires very precise calculations in order to accurately simulate any aircraft in flight at any given moment. Re: [Audyssey] BGT ADOM
I would be interested to. the reason I didn't play stuff like nethack or such was that it invarably involved loads of text graphic simbols. To have that as a straight audiogame will mean a lot. Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.
well hardware upgrades I started before software. If it was not for the readers costing me so much I would have upgraded sooner. as it is, jaws 12 seejms to have loads of issues with some apps so I am glad I won't need to upgrade that. Supernova screenreader is what I upgrade thats still a lot of cash but I am comferted to know I get a lot of extra goodies with the upgrade. I always look for packages while upgrading, and this one has got me more than I will need. I have enough to defeat hitler or at least i think so. At 11:21 a.m. 14/01/2011, you wrote: Hi Kai, Yeah, I've seen that kind of backwards mentality before too. When I was still at Wright State, it must have been around 1999, I was looking for a screen reader for Windows 2000, since that was the most recent and most stable development platform, and I pretty much got the same answer you did. Everyone is using 95, 98, and Jaws and Window-Eyes were looking primarily at supporting Millennium while the tech types like me who needed the NT/2000 Pro platforms for college were pretty much left on the side lines. Then, even when Jaws did support Win 2000 they wanted double the price of a standard upgrade. Never mind that Windows XP itself is based on the NT platform and is an upgrade of Win 2000 and not Windows 9x. However, I see why most VI users shy away from emerging technologies, because the agencies and companies that are suppose to be helping us hold us back. I think I purchased my blue ray dvd drive for around $129.00 USD, and I've seen them around $90 USD for a cheap brand. So they don't exactly cost that much to own/upgrade. It is the blue ray discs that are actually still on the high side yet. My point though is you really need to stop making all inclusive comments like "blue ray costs loads and noone owns them" because that is simply not true. To be honest making statements like that really makes you sound like an idiot. Perhaps not many in the VI community have upgraded, but we are rather poor compared to the rest of the mainstream PC market. Other people who actually have real jobs making something like 60K a year definitely have the money to shell out for a blue ray drive, blue ray disc player, and the discs to go with it. Since such people make up the majority of PC sales it is no wonder Microsoft and other companies are looking at improving blue ray support, switching to 64-bit, etc because their primary target market has the money to spend on that sort of thing. Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.
hmmm thats all well and good but unless everyone uses bgt, c++ vb .net or something up to date it won't matter as I said there are still people using vb6, dx7 and 8. Maybe those using bgt will get better results as well as the newer dotnet languages, c++, maybe the newer dotnets. But unless everyone using vb6 and autoit upgrades they won't be going anywhere fast. A lot of the blind games are card games. usa, bpc, gma and maybe soundrts can take advantage but the rest, hmmm. Saying that playinginthedark has improved their system so again that may be good. If agrip starts again maybe they can take advantage. In a few days I will upgrade one of my expensive readers which I have saved for. This means that my next system can be if I choose win7 and not xp. Ofcause I will have to really customise the unit but win7 has grown on me i could live with the os if I had to. One, more available ram for images, sounds, music, etc. Two, the ability to store large numbers for more accurate and realistic real time simulations. I'm sure there are probably several other advantages I'm forgetting, but there are definitely advantages to be had by owning and using a 64-bit platform, but the main three are performance issues, more available ram, and better precision when performing real time calculations for this or that. Note, that 32-bit vs 64-bit wouldn't impact games like Monopoly, Solitare, Yatzi, etc very much. No, the types of games that would or could take advantage is Lone Wolf, 3D Velocity, Tank Commander, etc as those have a real time simulation bent to them and the greater precision you can get out of the CPU the more realistic and lifelike the game will perform under certain conditions. Plus a lot of what I'm talking about also depends on the developer too. A developer not wel versed in physics isn't going to make his/her game very realistic on a 32-bit or 64-bit platform if they don't know what they are doing. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] accessible imulaters
well if you care to learn the lua script or care to fiddle with scripting you probably can make a program to handle this I am investigating doing scripting as a semi job. There are a few things that need it right now like the getright check version dialog. At 06:48 a.m. 14/01/2011, you wrote: I would add to this that if you try to bring Stella up by itself, e.g. without employing the command prompt to automatically load a game or otherwise having it load a game, the menus and dialogs within Stella appear to be completely inaccessible at least with Hal, NVDA and Window Eyes. What this means is that you are going to have a very hard time setting up a joystick for instance instead of the keyboard to play games. There may be some way around this however I have not found one yet. If there isn't then you will need sighted assistance in order to configure the program to use a controler. Nonetheless, Stella is an excellent alternative if you wish to play your old 2600 games and you either don't have a console or don't want to bother hooking one up. I've got two of them actually but neither is hooked up right now so Stella is very convenient. Hope this Helps. There are all kinds of game emulators out there. Two that are right off the top of my head is Stella for Atari 2600 games and SNES 9x for Super NES games they are completely different emulators for different types of games. Add to that I really need to know your definition of "accessible" in this case. For example, with an emulator like Stella I can open a command prompt and type "stella spcinvad.bin" which would load Space Invaders in Stella for Windows/Linux. Although, I can use Stella that doesn't make the games "accessible" just because they were never designed to be played by the blind. Playing Space Invaders on a PC with Stella is little different than playing it on a console accessibility wise. So if your definition is can we use emulators like Stella the answer is "yes." If you mean can we play the games in an accessible format the answer is "no." Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.
Hi Kai, Yeah, I've seen that kind of backwards mentality before too. However, I see why most VI users shy away from emerging technologies, because the agencies and companies that are suppose to be helping us hold us back. yes. the change custom track option crashes out of the program. Actually what I did to get it to crash was to go to the language selection and choose english. the game crashed. then in options I choose custom tracks. the game crashed. Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.
Hi all. A file system has nothing to do with 32 bit and 64 bit instruction sets. The available addressable bytes actualy only hold up to 2^32 bytes in a 32 bit machines ram. A file system does not usually have this limitation, unles it is fat32. Also when playing a big file, only a small section needs to be in memory. -original message- Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads. From: Thomas Ward Date: 13/01/2011 4:09 am Hi Shaun, That's actually an over simplification of the facts. Most people assume it has to do with 4 gb of ram, but that isn't the problem at all. With a 32-bit file system you can not easily create or map a file that is larger than 4 GB of size. This includes a wav file, avi file, mpg vidio clip, etc. As a result with newer technologies like blue ray it is becoming more and more difficult to map a 50 GB high definition video file to a 32-bit file system and/or play it with a 32-bit processor. In order to play huge files like this you really need a 64-bit processor, operating system, and file system. As multimedia formats get larger and larger in order to compress high definition video, high-fi audio, etc the more necessary it is to have and use 64-bit systems. This effects everyone in some way. Especially, since standard dvd movies are on the way out and blue ray dvds are quickly beginning to be more mainstream. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.
Greetings Thomas. I remember when I called Freedom Scientific around the time XP started, asking them if they had a version of Jaws that worked with the then-new operating system. their response was along the lines of: No we don't, since no one uses it. Our clients are using Windows 95 or 98. Mind you, XP had already been out for a while. I think it's that mentality of purposeful ostracism that makes it no mystery why visually impaired folk are still happy to use proprietary devices built on aging OS's like Windows CE, which cost about (at a generous estimation) 10 to 20 times the cost of the electronics inside them. Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.
Hi Shaun, Oh, yeah, games definitely could take advantage of a 64-bit platform.
Hi, Well, regarding Stella it uses SDL's cross-platform window manager and text is drawn to the screen using SDL's API. Since SDL doesn't use the Microsoft Win32 API Jaws, Window-Eyes, Hal, etc have no way of getting any information about that window and the text on it. They depend heavily on core Windows libraries like user32.dll, kernel32.dll, shell32.dll, etc to get the sstate of the window attributes etc. If a program doesn't use the Win32 API and send its Window information via that API Windows screen readers are effectively blind to what is on the screen. That's why the menus etc in Stella don't talk. Cheers! So, even if it says for an example, clashing destonies, and hero's quest, if I click clashing destonies and buy the music, will I get all of the grand adventure in the CD and not just clashing destonies? Re: [Audyssey] topspeed3 impressions
Hi friends. Re: [Audyssey] if it ain't broke, don't fix it - Re: Sticks version game pads.
Ever seen this practice in games? (grinning, 'cause me thinks me knows the answer!) It's a fine line, though, because, as an example, "Troopanum II" is not "Aliens in the Outback", nor is "Tarzan Junior" "Hunter Joe".. --- Shepherds are the best beasts! - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 12:37 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] if it ain't broke, don't fix it - Re: Sticks version game pads. Hi Charles, Well, that’s certainly one way of looking at it. There is even a term for it. It is called "perceived obsolescence." The basic idea of this marketing strategy is to take a product you have, repackage it, change the look or feel a little bit, and attempt to market it as a new product even though it is the same old product in new packaging. So, yeah, they are trying to rip you off if they can, or at the very least trying to make their product look newer and more attractive to their customers. For example, the biggest target market for this type of marketing is children. Toy manufacturers know if they change a popular toy just a little and sell it again kids will want it even if it is similar to the toy they have. This month they might have Night Strike Batman with some sort of night vision goggles or something, and next month they will come out with Ninja Attack batman with a couple of swords. The figure in the box is the same action figure but the equipment included is a little different and the packaging he is in is different, but kids don’t know or particularly care about that. They see the new Batman figure and want it, because his old toy is not as cool as the new one etc. Believe me my son is bad about wanting the same figure again and again just because the action figure inside is a tad newer/different than the one he has. The thing is every large company does this at some level, and I do understand why they do it. If you are in the business of selling cars you aren't going to completely invent a new car every year. Instead you might come up with some newer paint schemes on the 2011 model, or might change the look of the body a bit, throw in a feature from the limited model in the standard model, etc but you aren't going to redesign that entire car from scratch. That costs a lot of time and money in research and development. So they get by for another year or two on the same basic model, but make it a little more attractive looking than last years model, and throw in a few extras like power seats as a bonus. Well, software developers aren't that much different. Some want to make a few new sales, reach that bottom line, and if they can tinker with the UI a little, fix a couple of bugs, and resell it as 2.0 they'll do it just to make a few bucks. That's why upgrading from say Office 2007 to Office 2010 really isn't any big deal. I don't see a single thing 2010 has I don't already have with 2007 in terms of my personal needs so won't buy it on those grounds. Cheers! On 1/12/11, Charles Rivard wrote: So they're ripping you off while making you think they're not. In the case of trying to find moved settings, though, it seems to me like it's less functional or, at best, no better than the predecessor, more confusing, and more expensive. I still agree with my subject line in this case. In the case of JAWS 12, I like the newer arrangement of settings changes in some ways, and I like the approach to Microsoft's ribbons in MS Word 7, although the price for those changes seems sort of steep from the viewpoint of an end user who doesn't know much about what went into the making and incorporation of these improvements. --- Laughter is the best medicine, so look around, find a dose and take it to heart. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Also, if any of the original track and vehicle authors are on this list and have anything against me copying their material, I'd be glad to know about it. ;-) - Original Message - From: "Damien Pendleton" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 11:32 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] topspeed3 Hey, If anyone is still interested in the old Top Speed 2 Utility, I can update it to work with Top Speed 3.
