Re: [Audyssey] usa games forums vs lists new information

2011-12-20 Thread dark
Well phil, when I visited the Cadbery chocolate factory with my parents (the
biggest manufacturer of chocolate in Britain), when we talked to the lady
who worked there she turned out to actually be allergic to chocolate so
anything is possible :D.

And no, I came out without having been sucked up a giant tube, turned into a
blueberry, shrunk, chucked down a rubbish shoot or sadly without a lifetime
supply of chocolate :D.

Actually I'm probably more of a fan of foums myself for that reason, it's
far easier to filter what you read and far less time consuming.

I'd gladly check out another forum if I was interested in the subject
matter, and indeed there are several forums like project.aon that I don't
check every day but will drop into occasionally, but I wouldn't sign up to
another mailing list sinse with Audeasy, the Entombed list, a couple of book
related ones I'm on and all the mail I get from university circulars (both
leasure and work related), I just don't have the space.

Hi Dark,
Yeah asking a mailing list if they like mailing lists is like asking
someone in Hershey Pennsylvania if they like chocolate.
Note that is a town that smells of chocolate all the time as they
manufacture tons of it.
I now know why forums are getting more popular for as Thomas said if you
have 10,000 people in a mailing list you would get about 1,000 messages a
day but you could have that many people on a forum.

Hi Dark,
The only time the Cartesian direction degrees comes into play is when
teleporting a player or other creature to a new location.

Then you have to specify 0 if facing east.

Re: [Audyssey] Add-ons for Microsoft's flight simulator other than IYP?

2011-12-20 Thread Ron Kolesar

Well voice commands are just that.
You give the simulator or the programs commands by talking into a microphone
via training the Microsoft built in windows speech reconition programs. Go
into the advance options and you'l;l see how to set up your microphone that
you'll be using.
The best type of microphone is some tipe of headset with a boom mic built
onto the headset.
Usually a USB headset or like what I'm using a cordless USB headset with a
boom mic on it.
It has a little transeaver tthat for safety reasons, I would recommend
plugging it into one of the USB ports on the back of the tower.
Then there's a little roughly twelve inch cable that one end plugs into the
headset and the other end plugs into a different USB port to charge the
unit.

I hope this answers your questions.

I suddenly realized, that asking this question itself on a mailing list is a

so, just for kicks I asked the same question on audiogames.net and got these
responses:

Not surprising sinse those responding are not I believe on this list because
they prefer forums :D.

sorry for the extra confusion Tom, but if indeed your making a tally here it is
only fair to get everyone's opinions.

I suspect in the end it will be as most people here believe and we'll have a
usa mailing list afterall, stil I thought it was an interesting exercise to see
the other side of the issue.

Re: [Audyssey] Top 25 websites for gamers who are blind

2011-12-20 Thread dark

Hi Che.

Personally I've always found John and Eleanor from 7-128 highly reasonable
and open to suggestion on many points, and sinse they have not responded on
this matter I'd say your being a trifle hasty, or at least putting your
point a litle too negatively.

While I do agree, I'm content to reserve judgement until we find out what
the top 25 happens to be this year, and also whether the criteria changes.

As to how the top twenty five works in the scheme of things. Well you are
right in that no it probably won't change the universe, however I will say
that 7-128 actually do a lot in terms of game accessibility generally, and
have links to various games and general access related organizations, from
able gamers to retroremakes, indeed I first heard of 7-128 myself when they
appeared in a magazine artical detailing their life style as well as their
game access work.

this means it's more likely to be seen by newcomers to audio games, and get
the exposure we all need.

so while I do agree perhaps the criteria were too narrow if it excluded
specifically designed accessible clients for online gameplay, (especially
sinse it counts games like sound rts and topspeed whos' single player mode
is hardly astounding), I think we should wait for a response, or indeed for
the list itself.

Also on a final note, the list is not personal.

just as I myself don't object to the fact that audiogames.net is always
behind pcs games, I don't think the exclusion of any site is intended as a
reflection of anyone's work, it just depends upon what criteria they use to
evaluate the sites in question.

Indeed I believe several factors such as google rank are things that few
people can do anything about.

ahh, ok. interesting way of doing things in a flight sim, as what do
pilots have in front of them? ... a compass. all plains have one. actually,
they have several. lol.
let alone gps systems, which work on compass headings.
i think at the very least, a toggle could be used to switch between that
and compass bearings, but perhaps i am to used to actual flight controls.
but also, as has been pointed out, its what most people use in day to day
usage, so it would be easier for them to understand compass bearings.

let alone gps systems, which work on compass headings.
i think at the very least, a toggle could be used to switch between that

but also, as has been pointed out, its what most people use in day to day

Re: [Audyssey] Top 25 websites for gamers who are blind

2011-12-20 Thread john
Well written and I agree with everything said here. My original
impression was that entirely browser based games would be
excluded from the list, though my personal opinion on who makes
the best games didn't match the site's. Thus, while I believe
that Alter Aeon and swamp should be some of the top games, that
is likely due to the fact that currently those are the only two
I'm seriously playing. I was also surprised to see GMA not near
the top, but I suppose that there are lots of opinions on best
out there.

- Original Message -
From: Che yes, I can see where a line needs to be drawn if your
considering top

sites for blind gamers.
To me, the online thing shouldn't matter, what should matter
is if
the site offers games produced mainly for the blind, whether they
are

played online or not.
Web based games such as Core Exiles and so forth are games
that
happen to be accessible because they are browser based, maybe
with a

few accessible bits thrown in.
This is not the case with BA, Quinten's playroom or RS games.
Although these all offer games played on the internet, they
are all
games designed for the blind, not games designed for the general
public

that happen to be playable by those with screenreaders.
Of course, every game out there that happens to be playable
by the
blind cannot be properly reviewed by such a small staff for
inclusion on
such a list, but the sites that are developing computer games
basically
exclusively for the blind should be recognized for their efforts,
and
not lumped in with a bunch of offerings designed for the general
public

that just happen to be accessible as an afterthought.
Eleanor has fallen quiet on the issue here, so perhaps their
mind is
made up on the topic, but if so, it is a shame they aren't taking
input
from the community on this, as I get the impression they are
missing the

point some of us are trying to make big time.
If she is simply waiting to see what others have to say on the
issue,

thats great, and I look forward to hearing from her.
No list of top sites is going to make that much of a
difference one
way or another frankly, but it would be a shame to see deserving
work
not get a bit of recognition because the powers that be might be
mis

informed about some of these sites out there.
Bottom line, what is the purpose of posting a top 25 list, and
is
that purpose served by dismissing games designed by the blind,
for the
blind, just because their main mode of play happens to be against
other
human beings via the internet. No less fun is had with these
games, no
less work is put into their creation, and in fact doing multi
player

adds a level of complexity most non programmers cannot fathom.
If I were to take the ability to play other human beings out
of my
games, would they then qualify for the top 25 list? Because if
so,
almost all of my games can be played as is single player that
way, but
this seems really silly to have to strip out a major component of
a game
so it can qualify as good enough for anything, when the option is
there

for you to play it that way.
The exclusion of these sites just makes absolutely no sense to
me,

and I don't think I'm alone here.
Again, I can see not including web based games, and even most
muds
though I think Alter Eon should be an exception given the amount
of work

put towards allowing the blind to be immersed in the game, but to
dismiss a site because it makes games for the blind that also are
playable online is just illogical to say the least..
Let me say this as well. Swamp, which by most accounts is a
frontrunner candidate for accessible game of the year would not
make
this list given the current guidelines, , as it can be played
online.
Will the impact it has had on the gaming community be dismissed
because
it is played online, and if not, what is the difference between
swamp,
castaways, and other games jeremy has made, and the games RS
Games,

Quentin's Playroom and BA have to offer?
  Thoughts?

If the top 25 list included all the online text games that blind
people
can play well that's a catagory in itself, pluss it's then hard
to
separate out games that have been adaptated or altered for blind
players

vs those that just happen to be accessible.

that's why i see the point of excluding most online games, even
including those I like such as Core exiles.

Alteraeon though is I think the exception to this rule.

other muds like New worlds, materiamagica and avatar muds have
"some

the weather descriptions, and is as I said tantamount to an

Hi Shaun,

Yeah, I know, but what I was looking for here is some actual figures
as to how many blind gamers prefer mailing lists over forums or forums
over lists. So far while there seem to be a handful of us in favor of
a forum the majority by far seem to like lists better.

However, the USA Games community isn't that large to really require a
forum anyway. There is only like 40 to 45 people subbed to the list at
any given time, and it has been very low traffic of late. Forums seem
to be more popular with large game companies like Electronic Arts or
someone like that who has thousands of subscribers on any given day.
with that many subscribers a mailing list would be totally impractical
as it could never keep up with the hundreds of posts that would be
typical of a subscriber list that size, and even if it did I doubt the
average gamer wants 500 e-mails poring into their inbox daily. So
obviously large companies really need a forum for heavy message
traffic rather than a mailing list.

Bottom line, what is the purpose of posting a top 25 list, and is
that purpose served by dismissing games designed by the blind, for the
blind, just because their main mode of play happens to be against other
human beings via the internet. No less fun is had with these games, no
less work is put into their creation, and in fact doing multi player
adds a level of complexity most non programmers cannot fathom.
If I were to take the ability to play other human beings out of my
games, would they then qualify for the top 25 list? Because if so,
almost all of my games can be played as is single player that way, but
this seems really silly to have to strip out a major component of a game
so it can qualify as good enough for anything, when the option is there
for you to play it that way.
The exclusion of these sites just makes absolutely no sense to me,
and I don't think I'm alone here.
Again, I can see not including web based games, and even most muds
though I think Alter Eon should be an exception given the amount of work
put towards allowing the blind to be immersed in the game, but to
dismiss a site because it makes games for the blind that also are
playable online is just illogical to say the least..
Let me say this as well. Swamp, which by most accounts is a
frontrunner candidate for accessible game of the year would not make
this list given the current guidelines, , as it can be played online.
Will the impact it has had on the gaming community be dismissed because
it is played online, and if not, what is the difference between swamp,
castaways, and other games jeremy has made, and the games RS Games,
Quentin's Playroom and BA have to offer?

  Thoughts?

Hi Dallas,

He is using the Cartesian system of angles for direction in Zero
Sight. It makes sense if we are talking Geometry or some higher level
math like that, but most people use the Bearing system when referring
to north, south, east, and west directions in day to day life. North
is (0, 0, 0) and south is (1, 8, 0) in the Bearing system, but in a
Cartesian system (0, 0, 0) is east, and (1, 8, 0) is west.Its easier
from a mathematical point of view to calculate angles when 0 is at a
right angle.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games Mailing Lists or Forums

2011-12-20 Thread Thomas Ward

The closest analogy I can come up with is that it's like making a list
of the all time greatest songs and leaving out anything that uses a
drum machine.

Given that the current 'top 25' list is set up more as 'top 25 plus a
bunch of extra lists for overflow material', perhaps it would be
better for the blind community to do some kind of multiple list or
hierarchical setup: the years best individual games, downloadable game
sites, online games, game developers, that sort of thing. Right now,
the currently list is so widely variable in quality and landing page
type that its usefulness is diminished.

Well, right now I must say you and I are in the minority when it comes

public opinion is for a mailing list which we already have. That's
fine as far as it goes because the USA Games mailing lists don't get
all that much traffic. When people want to talk about STFC, MOTA, or
anything else they seem to go to Audyssey rather than the USA Games
list. So I don't want to drive even more people away which is why I
asked.

The developers list has suffered a similar fate. Before BGT came out
there were a few people interested in learning VB, C#, C++, Java,
Python, whatever to write their own games from scratch. Now, that BGT
is the tool of choice several of the potential developers are on the
BGT forum. I can't honestly blame them as BGT is certainly better than
trying to program an entire game or game engine from scratch in any
programming language.

That said, I like forums for basically the same reason you do. If I am
going to read a forum its nice to pop in, read a thread that is of
personal interest, and skip everything that isn't. I don't have to
first delete everything from my e-mail inbox I have no personal

it looks like most are comfortable with the current list setup we have
now on USA Games.

Re: [Audyssey] Top 25 websites for gamers who are blind

2011-12-20 Thread Dennis Towne
Elanor,

Unlike Dark, I don't understand why you would exclude online games in
this day and age. It may have made sense a decade ago, but the fact
of the matter is that 'standalone' games are rapidly becoming the
minority. Even now, I wouldn't be surprised if you were leaving half
of the available games off the table with the current listing
requirements.

My vote is to keep the mailing list. In my opinion forums are annoying and

Hi everyone,

Over the last few days I have been actively rewriting and updating the
USA Games web pages, scripts, etc for 2012, and among the changes I'm
considering is replacing the USA Games mailing list and developers
list with an online forum similar to Audiogames.net or the BGT forum.
I'm interested in your opinions on this before I make any serious
changes in that direction. How many of you are in favor of switching
to an online forum and how many of you would rather stick to a mailing
list for discussion?

Thanks.

Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Re: [Audyssey] Bobby's Revenge

2011-12-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Yeah, I know what you mean about not having played the game in years.
I was in the mood for a Christmas game, something I hadn't played in
ages, and remembered Bobby's Revenge. That's when I tried to download
it, couldn't find it on blindsoftware.com, and went hunting for it on
my backup discs. Let's just say it was a huge surprise when I
installed the game and the Readme file said it was written in 2002,
and I know I haven't touched the thing since at least Christmas 2006
or so. :D

Anyway, I was thinking of audiogames.net when I thought about hosting
the game. Its not a fantastic game, but I admit having fun zapping St.
Nick with the taser every time he tries to get away from my paintball
gun. Lol!

Hi eleanor.

while I understand not reviewing sites for uniquely online games such as
muds, I'm afraid I'm a litle confused why you would list a game like Sound
rts or the topspeed series from playinginthedark, who's primary interest is
it's online play, without considdering the online audio games available such
as Blind adrenalin, Quentin C playroom and Rs client.

Pluss, as far as Blind adrenaline goes there is the Rail racer game, which
is also playable offline.

while I appreciate the methodology, perhaps a more complete explanation of
what does or does not count as "online" in this context would be a good
thing, and also as I said, might influence the final list.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

load the new verssion you have to keep redownloading the sounds for the

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games Mailing Lists or Forums

2011-12-20 Thread QuentinC
Sorry for those who get this message twice, but since the topic has been
opened on both audissay and developers mailing-list, I decided to
forward my opinion on both lists too.

Hello,

I personnally prefer forums over mailing-lists, if the forum web pages
are made accessible.

For me, advantages of forums over mailing-lists are :
1 - Discussions are sorted into distinct topicc, it's easier to read or
follow a complete discussion, or go back to what a particular person
said a few

time ago in a given topic.
2 - If you aren't interested in a specific topic, just ignore it. In a
mailing list you have to delete all messages having the subject line you
don't want.

3 - I often find that mailing-lists are more spammy than forums. You
don't want to discuss, just don't go on the forum website. With
mailing-lists you
anyway see all these messages, because you anyway open your mail client
to get important messages (work, school, etc.)

If you can, use one which is accessible and alow quick response (write
your response on the same page as the messages without the need to open
a special

edition page)
The one which is on audiogames.net is a good forum for example.

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games Mailing Lists or Forums

2011-12-20 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I agree on forums.

As long as it's not a silly board with links everywhere and a less than
accessible setup, i've never had problems navigating forums, and it's easy
enough to skip down from post to post by tabbing and then just reading the
ones I want, or going streight to the bottom with hal's jump to eddit area
key.

If people aren't as used to using webpage navigation to jump to button, jump
to edit area or skip paragraphs I could see the problem with forums
generally, but for myself as long as the forum is a logically layed out one.

I have nothing against mailing lists, it's just that while if I miss a
couple of days on a forum it's not a big deal sinse I can just skip in and
read most recent content, mailing lists I have to keep up with or my inbox
just gets over full, especially when discussions take place that I'm not
included in.

At the moment I really can't afford to be on another list, which is why I'd
be in favour of a Usa games forum, sinse while I'm willing to drop into any
forum and post occasionally (as indeed I have on many for online games like
core exiles), I'd rather not be on more mailing lists, and indeed stopped my
subscription to the Usa games list for this reason.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Hi Dark,

Well, right now I must say you and I are in the minority when it comes
to forums. I've gotten several e-mails on this topic today and clearly
public opinion is for a mailing list which we already have. That's
fine as far as it goes because the USA Games mailing lists don't get
all that much traffic.

I don't have to
first delete everything from my e-mail inbox I have no personal
interest in, and then read/reply to everything that is left. However,
it looks like most are comfortable with the current list setup we have
now on USA Games.

Cheers!

2011-12-20 Thread Shard Workshop
As soon as the patch will be ready, it will freely downloadable from http:
www.shardworkshop.com/zero-sight for anyone who bought the game. The ones
with the demo will just need to re download it.

On the compass matter, everyone may be right. We know that 0 North is
something a lot of you are used, but we're receiving also positive review
from people who like 90 North, so it's probably a matter of preference!

As for some of the flying tricks, you are right, Zero Sight is not a
perfect simulator, but we HAD to relax some realistic aspects to gran a bit
of playability. Anyway, when you shut your engines a real plan does not
fall like an anvil or like wile e. coyote :D. You have momentum, so you'll
still be flying a bit forward.

As for Mario, yes using the official forum would be really the best thing :D

We are glad that you all like the game people, Keep flying and spread the
word!!

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games Mailing Lists or Forums

2011-12-20 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I visit forums only after an announcement is posted to a list.
I prefer the forums that have the link to the gam at the top with a comment
by the developer and the postings in the order of the most recent right
below the top.
I find it hard to go from forum message to message without having to read
all the information inbetween.

I don't care how many messages that person has posted.
Is there a hot key to get tot he text of each message bypassing all the
stuff inbetween?
So I usually like lists better as I can read the subject and delete the
message with one key stroke.

Re: [Audyssey] Top 25 websites for gamers who are blind

2011-12-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Che,

Yeah, I don't get it either. You have only been around since 2007 or
so and have made a huge impact in the audio games community with Rail
Racer and your BA Card Room.Your products have been very
revolutionary, and I think belongs on any top 10 or top 25 audio game
lists. So thumbs up to you for doing such a great job. I'd like to
know the reasoning as to why BA isn't given the credit it definitely
deserves.

Cheers!

Thanks.

Hi eleanor.

while I understand not reviewing sites for uniquely online games such as
muds, I'm afraid I'm a litle confused why you would list a game like Sound
rts or the topspeed series from playinginthedark, who's primary interest is
it's online play, without considdering the online audio games available such
as Blind adrenalin, Quentin C playroom and Rs client.

Pluss, as far as Blind adrenaline goes there is the Rail racer game, which
is also playable offline.

while I appreciate the methodology, perhaps a more complete explanation of
what does or does not count as "online" in this context would be a good
thing, and also as I said, might influence the final list.

Hi,

I'm trying the demo version of Zero Sight, and so far like the sounds.
However, I can't seem to get the plane to take off. After getting
authorization from the Control Tower by first pressing F3 then F1, I press
F to open the flaps, B to release the Ground Brakes, and the Page Up and
Page Down keys to turn on the engines. Next, I get the speed to 46 with
the Plus key on the numeric keypad, and the vertical heading to 38 using
the Down arrow key. After that, the plane just sits there, at least from
what I hear. If I wait at least three or more minutes, I end up crashing.
Am I missing a step in getting the plane to go up?

Thanks.

Hi che.

No problem tooting the Ba horn, that's indeed why I make such a point of the
features that the cardroom has on it's audiogames.net page, sinse you've
done a great job there.

i believe "online" didn't mean games with online capability (afterall they
list sound rts), but actual online brouser based or mud games like Core
exiles, kingdom of Loathing, Sryth or materiamagica.

As to how the list is generated I'm not actually sure myself, indeed I must
confess in past years some sites that have made it onto the list have rather
confused me, for instance gamesfortheblind, sinse their games are
essentially commercial eloquence versions of games that are mostly available
in better versions from other people, or able gamers, which while a great
organization for other sorts of game access doesn't have too much on Blind
or vi access specifically (while a good site to check, i'd not personally
put it in the top 25).

Stil, as you said, it's good the list is being compiled, and indeed it's
interesting to see what makes it where.

Hope Ba goes well.

Hello, Ryan.
Thanks for the update!
I would like to make a suggestion for the next version that comes out.
Is it possible to add a feature that would allow the client to
automatically update when the client is launch?
Another cool idea would be to have a feature in the client call offline
mode, in that mode people who are not connected to the internet could
still play against the computer.
Finally I would love to see a IOS version of the client, since alot of
people on here have a IOS device.
It would be great to be able to pull out my phone and play on the
client when I'm not at home!

Re: [Audyssey] moderator duties - Re: Close Topic Blind Gamers Being Taken Seriously?

2011-12-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

that's very true, and I thank you for your support. I think a lot of
people forget the moderators have lives outside this list too, we go
shopping, go out to dinner, watch a couple of movies, and just that
fast a topic that was more or less on topic changed direction and
quickly got further and further from the initial subject matter. It is
especially true when a topic or subject under discussion happens to be
somewhat of a gray area to begin with.

For example, while this list is primarily for discussing games we
sometimes allow people to ask programming questions on list if it
happens to be game related. It has always been somewhat of a gray area
because it may be game related, but depending on how specific the
question is it may fall more on the programming side of the fence or
more on the game related side of the fence. Its up to a good moderator
to decide how on topic that subject matter is rather than just ban the
topic outright in my opinion.

The same principle applies to the discussion we just had about blind
gamers being taken seriously. Again, its a gray area because it wasn't
just about gaming, and included such topics as how to properly
approach mainstream developers that involved talking about proper
formatting, punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc. Initially I felt the
subject matter was constructive for most people so let it slide, even
actively posted on the topic myself, but after I spent a day away from
the list the subject got into arguing about if the list should
change the guidelines to proofread or not, people started to flame
other list members, and I could tell an argument was beginning to
start. When I saw where things were going I pulled the plug in a hurry
to prevent a flame war. What i did was simply make a judgment call
based on the state of the topic at the time, and decided to shut it
down. I'm certainly not perfect, never pretended to be, but I do
moderate this list to the best of my abilities using my own judgment
to allow a conversation to continue or kill it when I think it has
gotten out of hand or too far off topic.

Cheers!
