If I had a Heisman vote, this would make me vote for TT for sure!!! -

  DOING IT ALL

For his day-into-night's work, Tebow carried the football 16 times Saturday
for 80 net yards and that ramrod touchdown, and despite the elements he
completed 12 of 21 passes for 185 more yards and three more scores. His 265
yards of total offense and four touchdowns in less than 3 ½ quarters qualified
as -- if there can be such a thing -- typically extraordinary. (You have
reached a sweet spot in sports when your excellence is assumed.)

Oh yeah, Tebow also recovered teammate Emmanuel Moody's fumble, threw a
hellacious block for Harvin and made the tackle after teammate Jeffery Demps'
lost fumble. Tebow did everything Saturday except stop the rain, play the
clarinet at halftime and write a headline for this column

  ===

In Saturday's Soak at Doak, for instance, a waterlogged 45-15 Florida
clobbering of Florida State, Tebow contributed the following to his already
comprehensive career, which includes the first Heisman collected by a sophomore:

  · One smothering block on an FSU free safety to spring Percy Harvin around
the corner for Florida's first touchdown.

  · One tackle of an FSU defensive end, who recovered a fumble by Gator
running back Jeffery Demps and went 2 yards backwards after coming in contact
with Tebow.

  · One fumble recovery, when teammate Emmanuel Moody coughed up the ball.

  · Oh, and here's one that won't show up anywhere. One time drawing
double-coverage from the FSU secondary on a flea-flicker play that was designed
for wide receiver Louis Murphy to hit Tebow for a touchdown pass.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)-No. 2 Florida could be without two defensive linemen against top-ranked Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday.

Matt Patchan has a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, defensive line coach Dan McCarney said Sunday night, and the freshman won't play again this season. Patchan won't have surgery, but probably won't return until after spring practice.

Patchan, who has seven tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in 10 games this season, hurt his knee last weekend against The Citadel.

Defensive tackle Brandon Antwine, who missed the first five games of the season while recovering from back surgery, sprained a knee in the second half Saturday at Florida State. Coach Urban Meyer said Antwine is "probably doubtful" against the Crimson Tide.

"He's not moving around at all," Meyer said.

The good news for Florida is Lawrence Marsh, the player Antwine replaced in the starting lineup against the Seminoles, should be full-go Saturday.

"He was 70 percent (against FSU)," Meyer said. "He'll be 100 percent (against Alabama)."

Marsh, a sophomore defensive tackle who started the first 11 games, has 21 tackles and three sacks this season. He sprained the MCL in his left knee on the first play against The Citadel.

[gatortalk] Tide vs. Gators: A dream matchup for the SEC title

2008-12-01 Thread keith

Tide vs. Gators: A dream matchup for the SEC title
By PAUL NEWBERRY, AP Sports Writer 7 hours, 35 minutes ago

Printable ViewReturn to Original

ATLANTA (AP)-This is what the Southeastern Conference had in mind when it started college football's first league championship game back in 1992.

No. 1 vs. No. 2. The Crimson Tide vs. the Gator Chomp. Nick Saban carrying on the tradition of the Bear vs. Urban Meyer and his new-age spread offense.

Top-ranked Alabama (12-0) and second-ranked Florida (11-1) finished off the regular season with resounding wins to set up the SEC's most anticipated title game ever, a contest at the Georgia Dome next Saturday afternoon in what essentially serves as a semifinal for the BCS championship.

The winner is all but assured of a spot in the Jan. 8 title game at Miami.

"We're extremely proud of the way our team finished the season," said Saban, the coach who needed only two years to restore Alabama to national prominence. "To win 12 games in a season is pretty special to any group of players."

Now, it's on to the Georgia Dome for a game that should have a bit of a Kumbayah feel for the Crimson Tide. On that very same field, they opened the season with a 34-10 blowout of Clemson, a team that was ranked in the top 10 and expected to win the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Tigers never recovered-and the Tide never looked back. Bama built a stunning 31-0 halftime lead on preseason No. 1 Georgia, survived an overtime thriller against LSU in Saban's return to his former school, and blew out Auburn 36-0 this past weekend to emphatically snap a six-year losing streak to its most bitter rival.
Next up is the stiffest challenge yet.

Other than a stunning 31-30 loss to Mississippi in late September, Florida has not been seriously challenged by anyone. The Gators are the nation's third highest-scoring team (46.3 points per game) and their 11 wins have come by an average margin of 37.3.

Even though Alabama is unbeaten, it likely will go into the game as an underdog. Many are already sneaking a peak at what would appear to be the most appealing national championship possibility, a better-bring-your-calculator matchup between the Gators and No. 4 Oklahoma, which leads the nation with a 53.3-point scoring average heading into the Big 12 championship game against Missouri.

Saban shrugged off that sort of speculation.

"It doesn't matter," he said Sunday evening. "Florida has played really well and scored a lot of points. They haven't even had a close game other than the Ole Miss game. They are a dominant team. They deserve all the accolades their team gets, because they've played extremely well all year long."

So has Alabama, though not with the flair of the Tim Tebow-led Gators. The Tide prefers to pound teams into submission with a dominant running game, hit a big pass every now and then, win the special teams battle and come up with turnovers at just the right time.

"We're just going to go out and do what we do," massive noseguard Terrence Cody said. "If we play our game, we can beat anybody."

For those who may have forgotten, this is a throwback to the early days of the SEC championship. These teams met in the first three title games, starting with Alabama's 28-21 victory over the Gators on the way to its last national championship in 1992. After a one-year layoff, Florida romped to a 45-30 victory against the Tide in ‘96 and went on to capture its first national title.

They haven't faced off on this stage since 1999, when the Tide blew out Steve Spurrier and the Gators 34-7 for one of the rare highlights in the Mike DuBose era.

"I know there's a lot of history between these teams," said Meyer, who has his team two victories away from its second national title in three years. "I've done a lot of studying since I've been here."

But Meyer prefers to look forward. His most pressing issue is the health of Percy Harvin, whose breakneck speed makes him a lethal weapon out of the spread but may not be able to play against Alabama after spraining his right ankle in a 45-15 victory over Florida State.

"It's day to day," Meyer said in a Sunday teleconference from Gainesville. "He certainly won't practice the first couple of days this week. He is here today and moving around a little bit. We'll see what happens."
Harvin leads the Gators with 35 receptions for 595 yards and seven touchdowns, but he's equally dangerous whether catching a pass or taking a handoff. He has 61 carries for 538 yards, not to mention the nation's longest touchdown scoring streak of 14 consecutive games.

While Harvin's injury was a bit of a downer, it hardly lessened Florida's enthusiasm about playing for another SEC title.

"Our whole offseason was based on getting back to Atlanta," defensive star Brandon Spikes said. "Just sensing all the hard work, it's just been great, this whole road, the whole season. I think guys are ready.

I don't really know what to say. I hadn't really thought about the possibility
of Meyer leaving Florida. Obviously, I would hate to see that happen, but in
all honesty, I also can't see it happening anytime soon. Maybe if we were to
level out for a couple of years and not show any potential for growth, he might
get the itch, but not now.

[gatortalk] Re: I KNOW I JUST DIDNT HEAR

2008-12-01 Thread ken

Wow, this writer really goes out on a limb. First, Peter Kerasotis of Fl Today already wrote this article about two weeks ago. Second, it is all complete supposition on both their parts.Coach turned down his "Dream Job" once, what has changed that would make him want to take it now? Nothing. He took Florida over ND because a) it is easier to recruit in Florida - you will spend more time at home with a young family rather than flying all over the country from South Bend; b) it is easier to win at UF, with better player base, facilities and a premier conference. In addition, he now has a daughter going to school in Atlanta - a school she chose in part to be close to home, he and his family have invested themselves in the Hogtown community and have a close bond with the Donovans. He still has a challenge here and I think he enjoys coaching this team. He has worked very hard over the past 4 years to get us to this level, I believe he will want to stay and reap the rewards of his hard work.He may leave for ND one day, but not now. Maybe in 5 years after another couple of MNCs and UFs first perfect season he leaves, but not now. I don't believe he will be here until he retires, I think the UF fans are by and large spoiled and never content, and that will ultimately drive any coach into calmer pastures. Just ask SOS...Ken K.

The way to break a three team tie is pretty easy, it's net margin of
victory among the three teams.

It seems that the BCS and the standard method would yield the same

It seems that the BCS and the standard method would yield the same
result.

[This is from a Pat Dooley article...]

What their fans did when Percy got hurt is one of the first times I've ever
seen almost a whole stadium cheer, Tebow said.

I think that shows not very good sportsmanship. That kind of irritated me.
I told the coaches just to get me the ball because I want to hit someone
extremely hard the next play. I was a little shocked. It's a rivalry, but
we're still playing a game.

On the second play after Harvin's injury, Tebow barreled into the end zone
from four yards out carrying FSU's biggest defenders with him, moving the
pile with great determination.

Memo to opposing teams: Never make Tebow angry.

wow...wow...wow!!! that's 100% unsportsmanship like conduct...but what the
hell else can you expect from those idiots!!!

2008-12-01 Thread Steve McKibben
I agree that the rain soaked heavy footballs were likely hard to get great
distance from.

It's ironic - after the Kentucky game, on the post game locker room show Meyer
gushed on and on about the kick coverage team - calling them the best he's ever
been around.  Since that game they've been poor. I noticed that during the
South Carolina game Will Hill, who's probably made the majority of our tackles
on kickoffs this year, was not on that unit. He was this past weekend, so that
can't be blamed for the poor coverage.

I think it was a combination of the wet fields and the fact that some blatant
holding and illegal block penalties committed by the semis went uncalled (there
was however a flag on every decent return we had).

Meyer loves to pin the KO returner in a corner and stop them short of the
twenty, or even the ten if we can.  He's a field position maniac. But I hope
that the facts that 'bama is not a quick strike team, the seeming slump by our
KO coverage team, a very good Tide return man in Arinas, and a dry ball
convinces him to tell Sturgis to put the kickoffs into the stands behind the
goalposts!

Make them try and go the full 80, I don't think we can get away with giving
them a short field all day the way we did against 1/2assu.

Our special teams against the half-assed ewe were terrible. We were kept in
poor field position and the ewes were given great field position most of the
possessions in the game.

That cannot happen against the evil Saban tidal slime if we expect to win.

Special teams have been great all year until the ewes appeared. We must
refocus and execute.

Biggest concern? Any concerns?

A lot of pundit types are saying for as different as they are stylistically.
they match up pretty well (Os v Ds, etc). I think I agree, except. I think
I give Florida the edge in Special teams.

I think Harvin (probably) being out for the game. doesn't help. but we have
finally started to use the entire arsenal. so Im not too concerned there.

I do not think this will be a one sided affair. However, I said that for
the last several games to prepare myself in case well. just in case. lol I
think it will probably be pretty close unless one team can somehow shut the
other Offense down. I don't see that happening though.

You stir on that while I go start the valium now. :-)

understand why we kept kicking the ball out of bounds, but now I understand.
Instead of just booming it, Sturgis has been attempting to surgically place the

FSU linebacker Dekoda Watson, who tied Rolle for team-high honors with seven
tackles, shares his coach's optimism. He was saying all the right things,
that FSU played Florida much better this year than last year.
Even his praise for the Gators was tainted. He said Georgia Tech had a more
complicated offense and declined to say Florida was the best team the
Seminoles had faced.
We may have gotten intimidated by Florida, Watson said. I wish that
wasn't the case.
Tim Tebow's a great athlete, but he puts his pants on the same as us.

It doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to know that Florida State is not in the
same league as Florida.

Not this year. And not last year, or the two years before that.

But when a Rhodes Scholar tries to explain what happened on the last
Saturday in November, when Florida ignored a steady rain and dominated FSU
45-15, you hope to learn a little something.

We were soundly beaten. We were just outplayed today, safety Myron Rolle
said. Our game plan was very good.

You can know what's going to happen, but if you don't make tackles and you
miss assignments you're going to get beat. It got out of hand. I guess
there's no way to stop them.

It's that simple, according to FSU's decorated scholar-athlete.

If there's a way to stop the Gators, FSU doesn't know what it is. Not with
Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow directing their attack.

Saturday's 45-15 loss at Doak Campbell Stadium was eerily similar to last
year's 45-12 beat-down in Gainesville.

There are differences, of course.

Florida is 11-1 and one win away from playing for its second national
championship in three years.

This year's edition of UF is considerably better than last year's. For the
past six weeks, the Gators have been the best team in the land.

Florida State is also much better, even if Saturday's one-sided affair
didn't show it. After back-to-back 7-6 seasons, the Seminoles are 8-4 going
into a bowl game and tied for first place in their division of the ACC.

Nine wins for 2008 is a very distinct probability.

This is a football program turning the corner. That it's happening in
increments rather than quantum leaps may frustrate the FSU faithful, but
don't lose sight of the big picture.

The Seminoles were ranked after Thanksgiving. That hasn't been the case in
recent years.

If that doesn't make this morning's brunch taste any better, realizing the
chasm still separating FSU and Florida, imagine how perplexed Bobby Bowden
is.

That game surprised me because I didn't think they would beat us like that
here, FSU's head coach said. The last time we had a beating like that was
last year against them. I thought we would make it closer.

The last time the Seminoles' legendary coach beat-arch rival Florida was
2003, when Ron Zook roamed the Gator sidelines.

We'll come back, Bowden declared. All you have to do is study history.
We'll ebb and flow again.

They're having their day right now, but I believe Florida State will be
back.

Then the 79-year-old coach let slip a candid observation, one that may get
lost among all the second-day analysis of FSU's fourth loss of the season.

He was still talking about Florida State's revival: Somebody'll see it. It
might happen when I'm here - but I doubt it. I don't know.

Bowden was in no mood to dwell on his future, not when the immediate past
was so painful.

FSU linebacker Dekoda Watson, who tied Rolle for team-high honors with seven
tackles, shares his coach's optimism. He was saying all the right things,
that FSU played Florida much better this year than last year.

Yes, but he has that cape.

The Seminoles' quest for their own superhero continues.

The Mighty Gators just keep on keepin' on, huh? We blasted the sorry ol'

Saturday night, and put even MORE distance between the two programs. All I
can say to

the Semis is nice to meet ya, sorry 'bout the mess, thanks for the help, see
ya later.

We had a pretty good week in Pick 'em, with Eric Bunce finishing first,
leading the way at 13-2.

Second place was a 5-way tie among Brian Hicks, David Lloveras, Mike Clark,
Shawn

Kopelakis, and Tom Clarke at 12-3. And a bunch of folks came in third, at
11-4.

For the long-awaited Year-To-Date Champion (drum roll, please), let's put
our

hands together for Bill Perpich!!

(Sound of crowd roaring)..

Bill finished at the top, 100-78. A big tie for

second at 98-80 included Fran Lasseter, Jason Schmidt, John Bowers (ahem),
Ken

Kirkley, Ozzie Sabina (ahem), and Woody Bass. Third place belonged to Brad
Reckamp, at

97-81.

The regular season is over, thanks to everyone for playing once again this
year,

and I s'pose we'll get another Bowl Game Extravaganza together soon. Watch

The Mighty Gators just keep on keepin' on, huh? We blasted the sorry ol'
Noles
Saturday night, and put even MORE distance between the two programs. All
I can say to
the Semis is nice to meet ya, sorry 'bout the mess, thanks for the help,
see ya later.

We had a pretty good week in Pick 'em, with Eric Bunce finishing first,
leading the way at 13-2.
Second place was a 5-way tie among Brian Hicks, David Lloveras, Mike
Clark, Shawn
Kopelakis, and Tom Clarke at 12-3. And a bunch of folks came in third, at
11-4.

For the long-awaited Year-To-Date Champion (drum roll, please), let's put
our
 hands together for Bill Perpich!!

 (Sound of crowd roaring)……

Bill finished at the top, 100-78. A big tie for
second at 98-80 included Fran Lasseter, Jason Schmidt, John Bowers
(ahem), Ken
Kirkley, Ozzie Sabina (ahem), and Woody Bass. Third place belonged to
Brad Reckamp, at
 97-81.

The regular season is over, thanks to everyone for playing once again
this year,
and I s'pose we'll get another Bowl Game Extravaganza together soon.
Watch this space,

Q A with Christian Ponder

By Talal Elmasry
Gainesville Sun Correspondent

Last Modified: Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at 7:37 p.m.

Q: How would you describe your first season as Florida State's starting
quarterback?

A: I think I've done a pretty good job. I think last year if you would have
told me that I'd be starting this year and we'd be 8-3 at this point, I
definitely would have taken it. I'm pretty proud of the way I've played, but
I think there's definitely a lot of room for improvement.

Q: When did you learn exactly how big this rivalry is?

A: I've grown up a Florida State fan so ever since I was little I've really
realized how big it is. It's a crazy time and it's a heck of a game and a
heck of a week of preparation and everything. I've always realized how big
of a game it is and how much fun it is going into it.

Q: Your team has plenty to play for, but is the team relishing its role as a
possible spoiler to Florida's national title hopes?

A: Not really. We're just looking at it as another game. It's a huge rivalry
game and there is a chance of that, but we're not really worried about that.
It's another game on our schedule so we can't really make it bigger than it
is. We just got to come out and play like we can play.

Q: You guys fell to Boston College but had a huge win against Maryland last
week. What's the mindset of the team right now?

A: We're pretty excited. We knew going into Maryland that was going to be a
tough game and we had to prepare well. We did and things worked out for us.
We got a little momentum on our side. Going into this week, everyone's up
for the Florida game and everyone's working hard and trying to prepare well.

Q: How has head coach Bobby Bowden helped you develop as a quarterback?

A: He's been such a mentor and a leader to me. I've always looked up to him.

2008-12-01 Thread NZ Gator
There's a twist to the SEC rule that I like better than the way they do it
in the Big 12. In the case of a three-way tie in the SEC, the team with the
highest BCS ranking is chosen, unless one of the other teams is ranked
within five places of the highest ranking team. In that case, the
head-to-head result between those two teams determines who plays in the
SECCG. That seems more reasonable to me. It was not like that when we had
our three-way tie and they changed it to the current rule pretty soon after
that.

to play for the conference title). If it does then I'll probably make sure I
get involved in that.

The way to break a three team tie is pretty easy, it's net margin of victory
among the three teams.

It seems that the BCS and the standard method would yield the same result.

When I teach my course on mathematical modeling of ecosystems, one of the
things I have to point out repeatedly to my students is that they will get
some answer no matter how badly they've modeled the system. The mere fact
that they got an answer from their model doesn't mean it's a valid or useful
answer. The same thing applies here. The BCS system -which is a mathematical
model- 'works' in the sense that it gives us some result each year, but that
doesn't mean the results are valid or that the system 'works' in the sense
if it working well. Texas, USC, Texas Tech, Utah -I'm sure there are others-
all have a legitimate right to complain about a system that doesn't give
them a chance to prove whether their teams are better than ours. It's a
broken system and needs to be replaced with an 8-team playoff.

this flawed system will at least have gotten that part right!!! Go Gators,

It's going to be Oklahoma. They will destroy Missouri.

Texas is just going to have to live with the fact the voters, including

USC won the Pac 10. As Leon would say, so what?

Gators will play OK.

The system works.

Nah, that's a meaningless argument since any cutoff has to leave some team
as the highest-ranked team not included. Heck, basketball teams fuss when
they're the 65th team instead of the 64th. But put it in perspective. Just
as a 16th seed has never won the NCAA basketball tourney, a 9th or 10th team
would never win a real football NC. Name me one year when anyone was arguing
that the number 9 or 10 team belonged in the BCS championship game and had
gotten cheated out of the opportunity. They don't, because the 9 and 10
teams simply aren't good enough. Two teams are too few to find a real
champion, four teams would be marginal, but the legitimate contenders would
always be in the top eight.

Here's this year's top 8. What team with any real chance of winning a
tournament is missing? Boise State? Ohio State? Neither team would run this
gauntlet. No, eight teams would cover it. I respectfully disagree with your
last statement... a playoff wouldn't solve all the world's problems, or even
all the problems in college football, but it would certainly solve the
problems with the BCS and give legitimacy to the football national
championship. For the first time, a national champion would have actually
earned the title by defeating the best teams in the country, regardless of
conference, on the field where the game belongs.

1 Alabama 12-0 0.9713
2 Oklahoma 11-1 0.9350
3 Texas 11-1 0.9223
4 Florida 11-1 0.8850
5 USC 10-1 0.8077
6 Utah 12-0 0.7843
7 Texas Tech 11-1 0.7807
8 Penn State 11-1 0.7373

Try convincing the teams ranked 9 and 10 that they were not worthy of
 making the playoff.

A playoff system really doesnt fix the problems with the BCS.

Steve, you may be on to something here. I have forgotten much of the
geometry that I used to know, but the distance from the kickoff tee to the
five yard line sideline would likely be 5-10 yards if the kick were made
strait to the endzone. Could someone who remembers their geometry do the
actual calculation?

Perhaps we should be kicking it strait and maybe out of the endzone.
Pinning a team at the 15 sometimes might not be as good as pinning them to
the 20 ever time.

I agree that the rain soaked heavy footballs were likely hard to get great
distance from.

It's ironic - after the Kentucky game, on the post game locker room show
Meyer gushed on and on about the kick coverage team - calling them the best
he's ever been around. Since that game they've been poor. I noticed that
during the South Carolina game Will Hill, who's probably made the majority
of our tackles on kickoffs this year, was not on that unit. He was this past
weekend, so that can't be blamed for the poor coverage.

I think it was a combination of the wet fields and the fact that some
blatant holding and illegal block penalties committed by the semis went
uncalled (there was however a flag on every decent return we had).

Meyer loves to pin the KO returner in a corner and stop them short of the
twenty, or even the ten if we can. He's a field position maniac. But I hope
that the facts that 'bama is not a quick strike team, the seeming slump by
our KO coverage team, a very good Tide return man in Arinas, and a dry ball
convinces him to tell Sturgis to put the kickoffs into the stands behind the
goalposts!

Make them try and go the full 80, I don't think we can get away with giving
them a short field all day the way we did against 1/2assu.
