[gentoo-user] D-link DSB-R100 USB radio..

2003-10-06 Thread Senectus -
Question:
I have a D-link USB radio (takes FM radio and pipes it as data into your
machine), and I want to use shoutcast or similar to pipe the radio
information across the network (streaming).
I'm not sure if Gentoo supports it.. but a search on Google (oh my loverly
google) dumps me this :
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=dsb-r100+linux&btnG=Google+Search

It seems like there is a module for it.. but how to I roll this into my
machine??
I'm a real n00b, with very little (nearly none) code experiance, and I have
no idea where to start.. whats your suggestions?

Senectus

The major reason I'm looking is size. I want something very small, I've
been informed by the "powers that be" that I need to clear up some space
for other projects. The advantage to NAS devices is that they are all
much smaller than PCs

I have looked at the boxes offered by littlepc.com and might end up
going with something there... (Unless anyone knows of other good "small"
sites)

Re: [gentoo-user] CD Writer and Dell Inspirion 8200

2003-10-06 Thread Lincoln A. Baxter
Thanks everyone for the responses. I got it working with the
hdc=ide-scsi on the kernel line in grub.conf, and then modprobe
ide-scsi.

This latest post interests me however. (no need for ide-scsi).
Is anyone else using this? Perhaps cdrecord should be modified to
default to this, so that it just works in the most common case, without
requiring custom configuration.

I have it working now with ide-scsi... I wonder if I should back that
out, and try the dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 solution. It sure would have been
nice if that had been documented in the man page somewhere. (may be it
was and I missed it).

At the risk of starting a religious war, does anyone have opinions on
the relative merits of the ATAPI interface vs. the ide-scsi interface?

Thanks

Lincoln

2003-10-06 Thread Andreas Vinsander
I suppose u need the extra storage, but why don't you convert the
windoze box to gentoo and use it as print and fileserver?
I use an old PII 300Mhz as NFS, samba (both PDC and plain fileserver)
and USB print-server (for my Epson Stylus C82), it works like a charm!

Hey All,

I've currently got an old Pentium box serving as an NFS, AppleTalk and
Samba file server and another old windows box set up as a print server
for a USB connected HP deskjet (the office color printer). My goal is
something like the Gallantry GW500 that we use for our web/mail server
but I can't find those for sale anywhere anymore.
Can anyone recommend anything off the shelf that won't break the bank?
Everything I've been able to find doesn't support NFS or Appletalk (not
a biggie for appletalk) or doesn't support USB printers.
Given the right hardware form factor I am more than willing to rebuild
the OS with Gentoo like I did with the Gallantry.
Thanks!

I could be wrong (and I most likely am), but I think that I
encountered the same error when installing from a stage1
tarball. I don't recall if a reboot or env-update finally
resolved the problem.

I think that the problem was going from GCC 2.95 to 3.2. I'm
also running an AMD processor

Re: [gentoo-user] Three small but annoying problems.

2003-10-06 Thread Steve

Very strange. The config should work. Tell me, What happens if you log
on as root and then start X? Same behaviour? or does it work
properly?
The only other thing I can think of is some obscure keyswitch. I am
troubled by one of those myself. Every time I reboot this thing, my
numberpad won't output numbers in X regardless of the LED status
until I press the combination shift + alt + numlock.
I have looked where I found my solution for some magic for you but
have had no luck. Perhaps some intense research on xfree key
combinations will reveal the answer.
If, however, root can switch terminals after starting X, the problem
probably lies in your /home dir.

Steve,
Try uncommenting the line:
Option "XkbDisable"
And restart X
This should disable any strange keyboard toggles IINM

Tried that and still can't switch terminals. A new version of Xfree is

Just compiled it without problems. Are there no more messages before

Are you using very aggressive CFLAGS?
I'll have to recheck my logs, it just compiled fine on the machine where I

That's great news. For some reason I remember something about fonts being
moved from one loadcation under /usr/X11R6 to somewhere else...

Any thoughts on that one?

There shouldn't be any major problems in this upgrade. It has all the
latest fixes and I haven't encountered any real issues. If you use X
over TCP, you'll need to re-enable it after merging. It adds a Synaptics
touchpad driver, which allows them to work on 2.6 kernels and adds many
features on both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. There's also a significant number
of security fixes and bugfixes. The last significant addition is
potential building of the SDK with USE="sdk" or USE="gatos". This will
eventually allow us to update individual drivers without rebuilding
XFree.

[gentoo-user] XFREE upgrade...

I am currently running xfree86 4.30 r2 from portage and would like to upgrade
to release 3.

What I'd like to know is, are there any additional steps I need to do after I
emerge r3 into my gentoo box? I seem to recall r3 being a test of some sort
and lost all memory of what was discussed on the matter.

Anyone running this version of xfree? Are there any additional steps to make
the upgrade a smooth one?

Thank you, in advance.

I'm running a similar board that works well on Gentoo. On board nic
works well sound is spdif 5.1. DMA works well also. Graphics scream
with an Nvidia GeForce 4 TI 4200 or better. The only problem with its
functionality has been lm-sensors which is now well supported in
version 2.8.0. at kernel level 2.4.20-r7 (gentoo-sources). As a
special bonus, it is a bit more reasonably priced than ASUS board
with the same features, and from what I've seen from others on the
list, a bit easier to get working. The board is a Leadtek
K7NCR18-D-pro. I purchased it from Monarch Computer
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/
One thing to watch out for with the nforce2 based boards is the fact
that the onboard nic drivers are not GPL but are in portage. This
might not seem like a problem but it makes it necessary to boot the
live CD with the "gentoo no-net" option (hit tab at the CD boot
prompt to check my syntax)
As of this time, there is no ebuild for lm-sensors-2.8.0 but it is
available as a tarball from their home page.
http://www2.lm-sensors.nu/~lm78/
Another tip: the current gentoo-sources kernel doesn't support
version 2.8.0 so don't bother building i2c support into your kernel.
Instead, d'load i2c-2.8.0 from the lm-sensors page and build that
before lm-sensors.
If you do go this route, I'll try to help out if you run into
problems, but another source of useful information is
http://www.nforcershq.com/ there is a linux section of their forums.

I have the A7N8X-Delux running under gentoo just dandy. Admittadly, it
was a bit of a rocky start, but not too bad :)

You will probably want to run something newer than the gentoo-sources to
get the support for the nforce2 chipset. I run ac-sources with no
problems.

As far as getting the features working, you'll need:

 - general support
Use a kernel that supports the nforce2 chipset, ie: ac-sources
You'll find it under block devices->agpgart and ata support->ide
 support->amd and nvidia chipset
 - network
I've heard that the nvidia NIC is better than the 3com nic (the
delux has two NICS onboard), and while I did have some issues with
freezing on large network transfers, this was cleared out by the
new kernel, but no problem with either now. If you are going to
use the nVidia NIC make sure you emerge [-f] nforce-net first so you
aren't stuck without a network and a need to get online.
 - audio
emerge nforce-audio and then stick "nvaudio" in your
/etc/modules.autoload should work fine. Optionally you can compile
and use the Intel ICH i8xx (nForce Audio) in the kernel. I don't
have anything other than two speakers set up, so I can't vouch that
you'll get full 5.1 surround, but it's on my list of things to try!

 - usb
I don't have many usb devices, but setting them up with the
standard USB drivers in the kernel seemed to work fine.

Other than that things are fine. When I first started out I couldn't
keep the box up for more than a couple of hours before a complete
freeze, which *really* pissed me off, but I think partly that was due to
getting a new MB at a point when there wasn't support in the kernel. If
you search on the forums for a7n8x you'll find a few of my posts :)
Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

/var/log/XFree86.0.log is your friend. read it when you have problems.
you'll find the folowing line in it:

smoother, more reliable (less crashes) and just plain "nicer". Last bin
I used was 1.01 something which used to be very flaky in binary mode for

currently at 1.0.3 waiting for RC5 or 1.1 to get into portage.

Greetings...

Out of sheer curiosity, I'd like to know what (if anything) people use
their Gentoo boxes for with regard to distributed computing projects.
There are quite a few out there that I'm aware of, but the demographic
of the home Linux user is very probably quite different from that of
your average PC junkie. The only such projects I know of in Portage are
Zetagrid, [EMAIL PROTECTED], and [EMAIL PROTECTED], all in the app-sci tree.
Distributed.net (read: prize money) obviously runs on Linux as well, and
I wonder if many Gentoo users even bother dealing with it since it's not
included as a package. The results should be interesting.
So, please post your experiences with these projects here, and why you
use (or don't use) any particular one.

This is slightly off-topic... but I was curious...

Although most of the time it's great to compile from the source. Is there
much point with OpenOffice? There's no USE flags to tailor for it, and the
ebuild seems to filter out the compiler optimisations... So what's the point?
Does it mesh better with the rest of the system if you compile it from
source?

I remember when I switched from MozillaFirebird-bin to MozillaFirebird the
change was very noticeable, MozillaFirebird(nonbin) was MUCH nicer to use and
had better fonts and everything. Is it the same with OpenOffice? Or is it
just for the hell of it? :-)

[gentoo-user] Gnucash broken after todays emerge -up world

2003-10-06 Thread Chris Gentle
Looks like today's emerge pulled in the Gnome 2.4 stuff. Everything
installed OK but gnucash doesn't work. It needs gconfd-1 and
apparently it's not running. I can start gconfd-1 manually and
gnucash will work. Anyone else have this problem?

I also had bonobo-activation blocking today. I unmerged it, ran emerge
-uD world, and after a long list of other updates, portage wants to
re-merge it again. Strange. When I try to do this, I get an error
message during configure, telling me that it is part of libbonobo,
which I already have emerged. And qpkg (emerge gentoolkit to use it)
seems to tell me that libbonobo wants it:

% qpkg -q bonobo-activation
gnome-base/bonobo-activation-1.0.3
DEPENDED ON BY:
gnome-base/gnome-2.2.2-r1
gnome-base/libbonobo-2.4.0

Any ideas why? I don't understand this.

Another problem that I have for longer is gnome-desktop, gnome-
terminal and gnome-session blocking gnome-core. After unmerging, I can
emerge gnome-core, but then emerge -uDp world shows that gnome-core is
blocking the other three packages. I can unmerge them, and will be in
the same state as before. I also posted this to the forum yesterday,
no solution yet:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=569020#569020

No big problem though, apart from being unable to do an emerge -uD
world.

emerge -fp

"-f" is equal to "--fetchonly". The only problem or inconvenience rather is
that this command will display the URLs for every mirror, so that every file
is listed multiple times.

Hope that helps.

[gentoo-user] Possibly OT: NAS / USB Print Server Suggestions?

2003-10-06 Thread Matt Neimeyer

Thanks!

There was my problem! As I already said in my other posting, XFree
checks EDID (Extended Display Identification Data), which for my monitor
only allows 1280x1024 as maximum resolution. But I know my monitor can
do better and I want a higher resolution than that non-4:3-stuff. So I
can configure whatever I want, it would only go up to 1280x1024!

Anyway, thanks for trying to help.

I had a lot of problems like this when I was compiling my kernel for

you only compile what is shown. That worked for me.

I used it for some time. For larger files it is ok and indeed speeds up
downloads. But for anything smaller than a megabyte, the logging of the
prozilla download streams take more time, than the downlaod itself.
For smaller files, wget is a lot faster.

There seem to be a number of issues with Gnome 2.4 and Evolution 1.4.
For instance, I can do anything I want with email, but Evo crashes on
exit if I look at the summary page, contacts, or calendar. This happens
on both my Gentoo and RedHat boxes.

I hope the bugs get ironed out so I can spend time with LDAP or the

i don't know anything about genkernel, but if you manually config your
kernel, you only need to enable the following:

networking options > network packet filtering
networking options > ip netfilter configuration > ip tables support
networking options > ip netfilter configuration > [stuff]

where [stuff] is the list of stuff you want enabled for iptables.
connection tracking is a good one to have, so is limit matching if
you're doing a gateway. quota matching is good for a multi-user box.
etc. etc.

hope that helps

i didn't have ppd in use. I am now reemereging gimp-print and ghostview,

Perhaps you don't have enough disk space on /var/tmp?

OpenOffice needs oodles of gigs
I thought of that before. I cleared 5.4Gb to make sure. I currently have
3.8Gb free with the OOo build directory still intact.

And there's the key to working with development kernels. I haven't
tried APIC
yet as it slowed down my modem the last time I did try. I might give
it a try
though as I know my PC does have an APIC available. Thanks for the
tip!
Last time I tried APIC my laptop froze every time I changed the screen
brightness (even before init would start, if i had changed it then).

Lucky I'm using NAT i suppose

I had a lot of problems like this when I was compiling my kernel for
shorewall. Go to http://www.shorewall.net/kernel.htm and make sure that
you only compile what is shown. That worked for me.

[gentoo-user] ALSA resets mixer settings

2003-10-06 Thread Ian Truelsen
I have discovered a strange behaviour with ALSA and the emu10k1 driver
(not sure if it is driver specific, but thought I would mention it in
case). When I make adjustments to the mixer settings using alsamixer and
shut down alsamixer, as soon as the next mp3 is loaded by xmms, the
mixer settings are reset to some pre-defined settings. The only way I
have found to avoid the problem is to have alsamixer open whenever I
play music. This also happens when an avi is played in xine as well, so
I don't think that it has anything specifically to do with xmms.

I have tried using alsactl store to save the mixer settings, but this
doesn't have any effect on the behaviour of the system.

Is there another command used to save the mixer settings in some sort of
default file so that they will not be reset every time they are
initialized?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My greatest success for recovering info off a Mac disk have been as
follows:
1) Have a working firewire-capable Mac with Norton Utilities installed.
2) If the bad Mac doesn't have firewire, take the drives out and put them
in firewire (or USB) enclosures.
2a) If the bad Mac does have firewire, boot in target firewire mode (hold
down T while booting).
3) Hook up drive (or Mac) to the working Mac.
4) Run Norton Utilities.
5) Repeat 4 until no more errors are reported.

One hard drive I worked on took three days to run Norton on, but
everything was retrieved. The computer was then sent back to Apple, who
replaced the hard drive under warranty. Usually, you can be done within a
day.

The biggest problem I've found with using Linux to read Mac drives is that
the hfs(plus) utils don't seem to have recursive options (ie, no 'hcp -r')
and while Linux can read a working hfsplus partition, it can't fix it.

Why does it happen? I don't know.

[gentoo-user] cannot remove vmmon module (from vmware)

2003-10-06 Thread a_k_b
hi there,

i got the following problem:
once these days my vmware started, but the vm was hanging, so i had to kill the vmware
process. but now, after killing it, the vmmon module doesnt get free to unload it. i
think it hanged because the modules had to be recompiled for my new kernel. so it
seems like the wrong kernel version module is loaded (shouldnt be, but seems like its
like that).
now that i've killed vmware, i have to unload the modules manually (or
/etc/init.d/vmware stop/restart), but this doesnt work. the vmmon module still has two
references, so it cant be unloaded. but the lsmod command does only show the number of
running references, not their names or something.

any idea how to solve this without a reboot? i already tried to kill all types of
lock-files related to vmware and so on, nothing worked. i cant recompile the modules
neither restart the init process, because both of them look at the references at the
loaded vmmon module... and then quit with a message like "still having a running
vmware instance".

:-(

First query works, on second query, Evolution crashes. (need to do

Is this an Evolution issue or a Gentoo one?

Should I re-compile parts of gnome with USE="ldap"?

Any one an idea?

The "proper" place would be in /etc/pcmcia/{wireless,network}.opts AND
apparently in the corresponding conf.d file.

I like the idea of putting it closer to the init.d script like you
did...but maybe generalizing it and moving the actual params to conf.d.

I don't think this location would ever support the flexibility of the
official locations in /etc/pcmcia, but it keeps things consistent with the
other network interfaces.

There is no written law that disallows you from using ezmlm. ezmlm
just requires that your mta delivers mails to aliases specified with

You'll need to create the directory net-mail/exchange4linux in
/usr/local/portage and save the exchange4linux ebuild file in there.
Then, when you run emerge, it should be able to find the ebuild and
install it.

Nano (actually almost all console editors do) has issues when
cycling the NumLock key in certain X terminals (rxvt, aterm, wterm,
etc...). When you switch NumLock on to off, you put the terminal into an
"application mode" that changes what sequences are sent by the keypad.
These sequences vary sufficiently from terminal to terminal that it is
nearly impossible to work around them from within nano.

In a nutshell, if you want to be able to use the keypad with the
arrow and page up/down functionality, you have to exit nano and reset
your terminal (presumably with "reset" or "stty sane" or similar) and
then run nano again with NumLock off. If you know an easier way to
restore "normal mode", please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[gentoo-user] Re: hds hecatomb

2003-10-06 Thread Roberto Padovani
i guess that the easiest way ot recover your data is to invent a time-machine,
go back in the past and make backups
i can't solve your problem, but if it's of any help, i've seen something like
that many years ago on a PC with a wierd, low-cost, M/B.
IMHO, and it's really humble, it's a motherboard problem, which means that it
can happen again tomorrow with the brand new, hi-tech, super-secure, disks
you buy today.
So my suggestion is to let the whole thing have a check and have your dealer
change the M/B if it's still under warranty.

To restore the data, the only option i see is to contact a company whose job
is exactly to restore data from broken, burned, fainted or damaged-in-any-way
hds. But you data have to be really important, because the typical cost of
recovery is in the order of 25$ per Mbyte (!!!)

sorry, that i can't give a "good" solution.

Instead of mac-fdisk you can also use pdisk.

Do you have ppd and cups in your USE line. If you don't have ppd, gimp-print
will not make the ppd files needed. So if you don't, set ppd in use line and
rebuild gimp-print and ghostview. Maybe it helps.

I've had a problem where diskdrake did something (I was probably careless)
to my Mac's System (main) volume, so I couldn't boot MacOSX. From Mandrake
I could mount the partition using mount -t hfs /dev/hda9 but not using
mount /dev/hda9. I managed to write a program that recreates the first
sector of a HFS+ partition, but this will probably not help you if you
don't even have the partitions as /dev/hdc?.

Fdisk is for x86 machines, and doesn't work with Mac disks. You should use
mac-fdisk instead.

Good luck

[gentoo-user] Re: maybe Gentoo-specific X-server problem

2003-10-06 Thread dwillis
here's how i got the max resolutions on my monitors:
comment out the "Modes" line in 'Section "Screen"' so you have something
like this:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen[Tri-Tib]"
Device "Device[Trident]"
Monitor "Monitor[Tiburon]"
DefaultDepth16
Subsection "Display"
ViewPort0 0
Depth 16
# Modes "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400"
EndSubsection
EndSection

you'll need to ctrl-alt-+ to find a resolutions that work, and you can
find out what they are with xvidtune (you don't need to mess with any of
the settings on xvidtune). you can then add these resolutions to the
"Modes" line. you shouldn't need to use "modelines" with xfree86 4.3.0.
for 'Section "Monitor"' you'll want to get your HorizSync and VertRefresh
from your monitor specs (xfree86 can probe for them, but i only get 31-60
for my HorizSync and 56-60 for my VertRefresh).

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor[Tiburon]"
HorizSync 28-61
VertRefresh 43-76
EndSection

hope this helps,
dave

Hi Paul,

Quick and dirty answer. :)

If you don't find anything on the Gentoo forums related to this (your specific
problem) then I
would open up a Bugzilla account and search the Bugzilla database for any matches
against the
output that you received. I don't know what meritt's opening a bug ticket with them. I
suppose
thats up to you.

[gentoo-user] hds hecatomb

2003-10-06 Thread mathieu
I hope I'll have a price for off-topic questions but you guys seem to know
everything about anything so I'll give it a try.
A while ago I asked a question about some hds problems. Now I blame it on my
mb's chipset overheating.
Satruday, the two hds of my girlfriend's macintosh "died". First, three (out
of four) partitions of one of them disappeared, then the five partitions of
the other. A year and a half ago, she had the same problem with another disk
in the same box. Since she has two disk, she gave up on backuping datas on
CDs. So she has lost an huge amount of work.
I tried to help her: patched my kernel for hfs+ support, emerged hfsutils and
hfsplusutils, compiled apple partitions support and then didn't know what to
do: disks answer to hdparm, fdisk doesn't see anything, diskdrake (from my
mandrake partition) sees a lot of partitions (13 If i remember), hfs sees 5
partitions. Still I can't mount anything. In /dev, I've got hdc, but no hdc1,
hdc2, ... cat-ting /dev/hdc prints garbage for a while (normal) then gets
stuck.
Question 1: can it be the mac that kills the disks?
Question 2: Is there a hope that I could save some partitions.
any help welcome, thanks in advance.
