and to treat such disorders. One young and enthusiastic counselor, Mahalaxmi 
Bhobe, has volunteered to help in combating such suicidal tendencies amongst 
students in Bardez during the current academic year. That, perhaps, is the 
best tribute one can pay to the great Bardezkar, Abbe Faria,   who would have 
been 250 years old this month end. No one lives that long. Abbe Faria lives 
through his dedicated work and discoveries. Whether the Government of Goa, the 
Archdiocese of Goa & Daman, the Corporation of City of Panaji, the Indian 
Medical Association-Goa Chapter, IPHB, Psychiatry & Psychology Associations, 
Village Panchayats of Colvale and Candolim or any other body wants to 
celebrate the event or not, it matters little. Abbe Faria's work helps to save 
lives and make them fuller than they would otherwise be!  (ENDS)

A detective novel, a tiatr and a book on Coconut have all been released in a
span of one week.  What makes it wonderful is that all the three books are
in our Mai Bhas, Konkani, and in the easy to read Roman script.

This Sunday the Roman Catholic Church's Archdiocese of Goa & Daman is
finally releasing the Holy Bible[Latin word, Biblos = Book] in Konkani. It
is in the Roman Script as is the original Bible put together by St. Jerome
or the VULGATE [ Latin Vulgare = Common] and the English translations
beginning with the Authorized Version [authorized by King James of England
because the Catholic Church had by then forgotten why St. Jerome had
written/compiled the Bible in common man's Latin instead of the academic and
literary Latin of his times. The first few translations of the Bible into
English went up in flames along with the translators, who were burnt at the
stake.]

ATAM  RODDON KITEAK UPKARTA ? [ WHAT IS THE USE OF CRYING NOW?]This is not
my question but the title of the book, and tiatr, written by  Mario Menezes
and published by Dalgado Konknni Akademi. It was released on 28 May, 2006,
at a tiatr in Kala Academy, Panaji.

NAL'LACHI  LAGVODD [COCONUT CULTIVATION] is a technical book on coconut
cultivation written by my friend and former colleague [ I left the job, not
he], Nevil Alphonso, who has written it in the common man's Konkani so that
the farmers and home scale growers of the coconut tree can read and
understand it. It is priced at Rs.50/- a copy thanks to a Goa Government
grant through the  Goa Konkani Akademi. It was released on 29 May [ See
Navhind Times of 30 May, 2006 for report]

JANYA-CELI is a detective thriller by the James Hardley Chase of Konkani in
the Roman script, Bonaventure Peter Fernandes, popularly  known as
Bonaventure D'Pietro. I have known him for a long time as a Saxaphonist [At
my request, he played in the Darbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan last month!] and
father of the gifted musisians in the "D'Pietros" band that livens up the
Sao Joao at Siolim every 24 June afternoon. [If you have not enjoyed a 'Sao
Joao' boat/float parade, come to St. Anthony's Church, Marna-Siolim at 3.00
P.M. It  has a Mhapsemkar Parish Priest, Fr. Brito Furtado, this year.] .
JANYA CELI was released on 30 May, 2006, to mark the Goa's 19th Statehood
Day. A report can be seen on page 5 [top, centre]of the Navhind Times dated
01 June, 2006.

The POVITR PUSTOK [HOLY BIBLE] complete with the all-new translation of the
ADLO KORAR  [Old Testament] and the already available  NOVO KORAR [ New
Testament] will be released by the Archdiocese of Goa & Daman after a
special mass on Sunday 04 June, 2006 at 10.00 A.M. in the Se Cathedral  [
incidentally, dedicated to St. Catherine in whose name Goa was claimed by
Afonso de Albuquerque in his second attempt( because of ATKT in the River
Mandovi after his first attempt on 10 March, 1510 he was declared failed by
the Adil Shah of Bijapur in May the same year)  on her feast day 25
November, 1510 A.D.]. I am told that a press note on the release function is
yet to be released to the newspapers by the publishers of the Povitr Pustok.

The latest issue of the GOENCHO ULO to mark Goa's 19th Statehood Day and the
250th birth Anniversary of the birth of Abbe [Jose Custodio de] Faria...and
the beginning of its second year of publication [ it is using the Indian
fiscal year as a marker] is ready for uploading. Erratic power supply, due
to cyclonic conditions and rain, delayed the issue which we had hope to
upload by 31 May, 2006. The front page carries a picture of a commerative
postcard that could have been issued in India, but was unfortunately not
issued. Perhaps, one may be issued on his 251st birth anniversary in true
Indian tradition of not doing anything in "full" numbers ;-)

honey. It is being released on this Sunday 04 June, 2006 after a special mass 
at 10.00 A.M. in Old Goa.Edited by Fr. Manuel Fernandes and assisted by Fr.Ave 
Maria Alphonso this book has the efforts of  Fr. Caetano Cruz Fernandes, Fr. 
Moreno D'Souza, Fr. Eusebio Ferrao and a number of other persons including [ I 
am told] Bonaventure D'Pietro a noted saxophonist and writer of thrillers, one 
of which [Jaanya-Celi]is being released today by the Goa Konkani Academy at 
Panaji.. 40,000 copies have been sold at a Pre-publication priceRs.150/- The 
balance 20,000 copies are priced at Rs.300 each. 
 
60,000 copies are not enough for a Catholic population of about 4 lakhs in 
Goa. There will be a large numer of MOGO [ Mumbaikars of Goan Origin] in 
Mumbai and all over the world who would read any book only in the Roman Script 
or Romi Lipi.. The other MOGO [Manglurkars of Goan Origin] also love reading 
in Roman script when not reading in Kannada script. If every earning Konkani-
reading Catholic buys a copy of the POVITR PUSTOK then a second re-print, of 
2.00 lakh copies or more, will be necessary. It can be economically done while 
the offset plates are still available. Since the Authorship vests in the 
Pericletos [Holy Spirit or Counsellor] no major revisions are possible in the 
text. Buy a copy immediately on its release. Force a re-print in Roman script. 
Buy a copy of the POVITR PUSTOK for the next generation [specially those who 
have studied Konkani in schools and learnt to hate their Mai Bhas, instead of 
loving her more as was presumed to happen.]. You can treat it like the Da 
Vinci Code. No one is compelling you to either read it or to believe it. Just 
buy a copy. It would have served the purpose. If your children read a small 
passage for the very first book[ Genesis] once a week, they will find out for 
themselves how easy and nice it is to read their mother tongue in a script 
they will anyway use all through their life. I will be posting excerpts from 
the Old Testament [Porno Korar] that talk about life[ and not about any 
religion] on the net groups that permit me to do so. May be some of the 
appropriate proverbs, too. there is a whole 'Book of Proverbs' in the Old 
testament. It will now be avialble to Konkani readers who have had to make do 
with much inferior proverbs for want of a better source. I have been looking 
for a good Konkani translation of the Proverb " When a wise man argues with a 
fool; whether he laughs or rants, there is no end' . Now I have to just look 
up that chapter and verse in the POVITR PUSTOK. Life is so simple.
 
On World Environment Day [05 June] improve your cultural environment. Buy a 
POVITR PUSTOK. Support Konkani.
 
Do in Rome as the Romans do. Use Roman Catholics use Roman Script. The world 
today is a Roman Script Empire. Like it or lump it. that's the truth, the 
life and the way of the things to come.

 first camp scheduled for 03-04 June, 2006 for 15 to 20 beneficiary patients
 coming from economically poor sections of society. The Press note has been

 the Headline "Cataract Surgery programme by Rotary Club" which gives a true
 and correct picture of the programme facilitated by the yeoman service of
 Vrundavan Hospital, its management and staff. [ It does the operations for

 small fraction of the normal charge of Rs.12,000/- to15,000/- per operation
 in Goa].

 Patients may be referred to Rtn. Pamela Aiyar Cabral at Cabral

Teaching, Educating and Learning
Do not let your schooling come in the way!

The Higher Secondary School results are just out and the SSC results will soon 
follow. By the end of this month, what will be later remembered as the "best 
years of our lives" will be over for many thousand individuals in Goa and for 
millions of students throughout India. The school years are the formative 
years. Yet, the least attention is paid to school education in our mad rush 
for admission to "professional" courses.

My guru for school level education is Fr.C.P.Varkey, SJ. As the name suggests, 
he is a Jesuit priest of Malayali extraction. He has risen above such 
parochial contexts to experience education and write a book entitled "Gently 
and Firmly". Priced just Rs.40/- and available at any  St.Paul's Books store 
[there is one near Bombay Bazaar on 18 June Road, Panaji], this book should be 
read by every teacher, school administrator and School Board member at the 
beginning of every academic year. Parents of school-going children would also 
do well to read it. Those who have read the book, first published in 1995 and 
reprinted six times since, have benefited tremendously form it. I have had the 
occasion to quote from this book to my teachers, who now teach my children in 
the same school in almost the same way.three decades later! There is one 
change for the better: the corporal punishment has decreased considerably. 
This is no mean achievement in an all-boys' school.

The introduction to the book is simple, "This book is written with only one 
goal: to help schools and teachers bring out the best in the children who come 
to their schools." Equally simple is the message on the back cover. "What a 
child becomes during his/her life in the school depends, to a great extent, on 
his/her teachers."  The teachers have a greater responsibility then just 
completing the 'portion' of the syllabus allotted to them to teach in class. 
The teachers make or break the child who is their captive audience, spectator, 
hostage or even victim for the better part of the waking hours of each day.

I am member of two school-linked Net-groups created by a friend to keep former 
classmates and fellow school students in touch, wherever they may be and 
whatever their present station in life. Ever so often the 'thread' picks up 
discussion about teachers, their strengths, their contribution to the learning 
process and character building, foibles, and sometimes of their obvious sadism 
couched in the garb of discipline. There is a teacher who would lift up little 
boys by locking his hands over either ear of the unfortunate student, another 
who would insert a pencil between the index and the middle finger of the 
student and crush the little fingers together around the pencil. Guantanamo 
Bay detention centre, Siberia, Tihar and other camps for hardened criminals 
might have faced investigation for similar human rights violations. In 
schools, no one even bothers to acknowledge such things can happen, let alone 
accept that it happens in their own school. The difference between discipline 
and sheer terror tactics is lost on many a self-proclaimed educationist or 
school administrator. Discipline is the euphemism that serves them well. Many 
of my school mates, who have had the occasion to be 'disciplined', try to 
emulate Mark Twain who wrote thus, "I never let my schooling interfere with my 
education." Others just repeat the process when they become teachers or 
administrators.

Fr. C. P. Varkey quotes a Chinese proverb, "It is not the cry, but the flight 
of the wild duck that leads the flock to flyand follow." No student of my 
school will remember the hugely acclaimed and oft repeated Jesuit Education 
Paradigm [JEP] that emphasizes that 'the student is at the center of 
education". He may not even remember physics, chemistry, geography or even the 
exercises of mass P.T. in school. Mention the name of a teacher and at least 
one episode or characteristic or nickname of the teacher will spill out 
spontaneously. It is the flight of the duck, not his or her teaching or 
screams that make the students to follow. It is the example. Many of our 
teachers are waddling, nay, sitting ducks. How can they inspire their students 
to fly?

There is an information explosion. With the advent of the internet and the 
increase in affluence one has an access to endless amount of information. 
Today, the difficulty is in screening information for what one needs, 
collating it and making sense of it all. The 'learning by rote' system of 
instruction [as distinct from education], the emphasis on memory instead of 
discernment and application of knowledge, prepares the student for nothing 
that a computer cannot do better and at a lower cost. An IT professional who

Priyaranjanjan das Vinci .ooopsMunshi, the Union Minister has
authorised the Central Film Censor Board to release the film Da Vinci Code
based on Dan Brown's book of the same name [published in 2004] with a
lingerieoops again, the slip is showing ;-))...lingering disclaimer that
the work of FICTION is not actually validated by History [whatever that
means].

This is a TRUE FACT. History itself is replete with FALSE facts. It all
depends as to who wrote it and who is reading it. If you are confused
consult Justice[Retired] Mukherjee. He must be confused, too. Justice
retired is justice denied, or so it seems to him. the important thing is to
submit the report to the Government that commissions it. It will earn you
less honorarium but it will leave you with greater honour. One does not
normally enjoy both.

In the meanwhile both, the film "The Da Vinci Code" and a number of obscure
'catholic' organisations, bishops and their spokespersons enjoyed a bit of
media attention. And the cartoonists had a field day portraying Priyaranjan
Das Vinci.

arks. I personally know many students who have done
extremely well through self study, as we did dutring our times. My neice,
who studied in DM's PVS M Kushe HSS, Assagao BUT DID NOT ATTEND COACHING
CLASSES, disproves Dhond's theory in his own institution. She was not
detered when Ulhas Dhond gave her very low marks in Chemistry for the first
test (his time tested marketing strategy) or mocked her for the poor
performance. She did not get the special "assistance" that other students
( even those who would score full marks on their own!) got for the practical
exams. She was his bete noir. She worked on her own. She topped the class
for the Board examinations. To Ulhas Dhond's utter consternation she scored
one mark more in Chemistry than his favourite student and "coaching" pupil.

When the list of "Distinction" students was put up on the HSS Notice Board
that year, my neice's name was missing in it. I called up the then Principal
of the HSS, Mr.Surendra Sirsat, the current State President of the high
flying Janata Party who has taken VRS from April this year. He was, after
all is said and done, a junior colleague of my mother Gracinda (popularly
known as 'Braganza teacher') in Mr.R.A.Tople's Janata High School, Mhapsa,
and is considered our family friend to this day. I asked him a simple
question." Is Dnyanaprasark Mandal ashamed that Braganza teacher's grand
daughter has topped the Std.XII-Science in its institution?" He had the list
immediately rectified when I told him the reason why I asked him this
question. He has always been a gentleman. Perhaps, this genleman-ness
prevented him from taking action against Ulhas Dhond all these years. I do
not envy Principal Pandit, who has now taken charge of the institution, his
onerous task. The quicker the 'two-timing' teachers like Ulhas Dhond, who
exploit the students entrusted to them to line their nests and swell their
coffers, are shown the door, the better. A little bit of exemplary
punishment will not make anyone shed a tear. These are no gurus...they are
pimps and touts of the education system.

Oh Migosh! A little 'grape escapade' and so much to gripe about? Looks like there was no 'Escape' from this. ;-)) The wine festival idea originally began as a "Wine Carnival" during the era of the late Promod Shetye. He is no more. However, Satyen Nagvenkar of GTDC will remember the discussions in late January 2005 in the chamber of the MD of GTDC along with Mario of Nita Distillaries, the sole representative of the wine industry in Goa at the meeting, and yours truly. I had suggested then that the time[ less than two weeks] was too short to have the wine festival as part of the carnival and that we could combine the wine festival with the fruit festival, the KONKAN FRUIT FEST, that the BSG was hosting along with the Corporation of the City of Panaji in the first week of May. We were promoting fruit wine at the event, anyway. All we needed to do was to upscale it. We
parted with a promise to discuss the issue later. The next thing that we heard was that there would be a GRAPE ESCAPE at the INOX courtyard and..it would coincide, day for day, with the 2nd Konkan Fruit Fest. So there we were, GE and KFF, on either side of the D.B.Bandodkar Marg...and on the same side of the river Mandovi...doing almost the same thing! Fruits, food, music, people. In fact, the GRAPE ESCAPE jumped the gun on KFF in the quarter finals. The KFF had begun the 'heats' on fruit wines with cashew wine in 2003. We are still in the race in 2006 with cashew/kaju, jamun/jambulao, kokum/brindao and grape wines. There seems to be nothing wrong if the one that jumps the gun is disqualified from the race. It happens even in Olympics! I edited the Diamond Group of tabloids, then a group of five North Goa, Ponda, Margao, Bicholim and Vasco PLUS, and we carried the Grape Escape in colour with photos
to highlight the show. Ethel edited the GROOVE English supplement for the Marathi newspaper, Tarun Bharat, then. There was not a word about the KFF in its pages,before, during or after the event. The hurt, the talk of TRIPS and IPR and a host of allegations against the good Dotor and GTDC...from which dormant volcano do they now erupt. There was no such emotion in 2005. TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE. There is no other way for all to win. The sooner we learn that the faster we will progress. There is no IPR on the TEAM spirit. We are on the copyleft mode. The flavour of fourth edition of the 'Konkan Fruit Fest' lingers in the mind 
as our tongues get ready for a taste of the second 'Grape Escape' beginning 
tonight. Both these events are good enough for the Governor and the IAS 
cadres, besides politicians of every hue and shade to willingly associate 
their names with them. The hordes of people who come to these events would put 
any day time market to shame.

The 'Saturday Nite Bazzar' is a 'No ball' in a One Day International market: 
Hai bhi. Nahin bhi! Ingo Grill has left the country. He usually does at this 
time of the year. It is also an appropriate time to make politically correct 
noises. The cops say they put the heat on him as if the summer heat was not 
enough to make him go to cooler climes. According to a mid-day news tabloid, 
the ban on late night music will be implemented now. It is also three weeks 
after the last trance dance stopped playing at Morjim and Ashwem beach. This 
is supposed to be 'news'. Now, it is truly time for the Mid-Summer Night's 
dream!

There was this SMS that came my way, At nights I lay awake, tossing and 
turning in bed. Meri nindh udd gayee hai. I asked god, 'Could this be love?' 
He replied, 'Have a cold water baththe summer is here!' Kitna simple hai 
life.  Actually, the best things in life are often very simple. It may be as 
simple as a good plate of fish curry and rice with some pickled raw mango as 
the flavour of the season. There is nothing like a dash of urrac with a 
generous helping of a lime and lemony drink to get one in the right spirit and 
give one the sleep of the just even before the head touches the pillow.

The core competence of Goa is its acceptance of the unfamiliar and its rather 
natural assimilation as its own. The coconut tree came from Micronesia, the 
cashew from Brazil, the chilli from Chile, the Bor from Mauritius, the Nachini 
[Finger Millet] from sub-Saharan Africa and the mango from Indo-Burma border 
area but any Goan will readily tell you they our our very own plants and quote 
two dozen 'authorities' to justify the statement. The 'mando' is our own, too. 
So what if the paan-baju looks like a sarong-and-blouse and the music is 
similar to that of Borneo in Indonesia or that the paper fans are actually 
known as 'Chinese fans' or that the women wear 'chinellam'. It does not matter 
that tail-coats, top hats, bow ties, socks-and-shoes or the violin are 
European imports. The ghumot is our own, the Konkani language is our own and, 
hence, the Mando is our own. There can be no debate on this.

So what is so great about the Saturday Night Bazaar? Actually, it is Mhapsa's 
famous Friday Bazaar happening at Arpora or Baga on a Saturday night. The 
lamanis are there, the bajja stalls are there, the banjara musicians and 
jugglers are there. Even the Friday market attracts tourists of all shades and 
skin tones. The difference between the Friday bazaar and the Saturday bazaar 
is actually in the agency that earns revenue out of the event. Whereas in 
Mhapsa's Friday bazaar the Mhapsa Municipal Council earns revenue through rent 
on space or sopo, on Saturday nights it is the private entrepreneur who makes 
the money. It is, perhaps, time that the local bodies in Goa began thinking 
like their counterparts in Delhi. It is time to set up night markets in an era 
of the working couple! It is truly a 'cool' option. 

One easy to implement profitable idea that comes to my mind is a hybrid 
version of a 'Spice Farm', 'Ancestral Goa' and a Night Bazaar woven together 
in a lunch to dinner package for the tourists. It can be an extension of 
the 'Goa by night' package or a modification of the North or South Goa package 
offered by the GTDC. Its chain of Residencies and resorts can be easily 
converted into booking and pick-up points. The Goa Handicrafts RSSID 
Corporation, the Goa State Horticulture Corporation, the Kadamba Transport 
Corporation, the Kala Academy, Goa Colleges of Art and Music and the 
Institutes of Hotel Management, musicians,GHAG, BSG and other NGOs can be

Surely this must rank as one of Dr.Willy's best jokes. A decision taken at
the peak of the foreign tourist season is being implemented two months after
its end! Anyone connected with tourism knows that the foreign tourist flow
becomes a trickle by mid-March and is almost dried up in May. So WHO is
supposed to be holding RAVE  parties in May for whom?? The 'fake' hotelier
from Anjuna would definitely not liked to be named...lest he/she/it be
referred to IPHB as a possible in-patient.

How can the police seize DRUGS at a rave party. there is no such thing as
'drugs' in their list of  NDPS. It must be a hallucination if someone things
that there are 'drugs' in Goa. Goa is pure ecstasy. the weather gives the
foreigners a 'high' ;-(

The ban, if implemented, may only affect a village zatra or quermesse this
season. By the end of rains no one will remember the ban.

It is just a mere coincidence that Dr.Willy has brought in the saintly
looking Mr. N.Suryanarayan to assist Fatima D'Sa in the GTDC ...and they
will be having a blast at the INOX courtyard for the GRAPE ESCAPADE this
wekend. Will it end at ten?? Or is it "technically" away from the beach [
and hence out of the ban] like the hotel coming up at Dona Paula near Raj
Bhavan?

inaugurated by Mr. Tony Rodrigues, Mayor of Panaji,at 10.30 A.M. on Friday
05 May, 2006, in the presence of Sanjit Rodrigues, Dr. H.Y.Karapurkar,
Mr.P.G.Kakodkar, Dr.Ajit Shirodkar and other dignitaries at a simple
function. The Mayor evinced keen interest in the various exhibits. The
Corporation of the City of Panaji is a festival partner in the Konkan Fruit
Fest since its inception in 2003. The ICAR-Goa, The Regional Fruit Research
Station of KKV at Vengurla, the University of Agricultural Sciences-Dharwad,
the Directorate of Agriculture and the Department of Science ,Technology &
Environment besides Western Ghats Kokum Foundation, Ravi Mangal Agro Pro
Combine, Eco-Green, Self-Help Groups, Rishta, Arolkar Fruit Farm and fruit
growers, processors and others have been associated with the event to
promote new technologies, techniques and interaction to grow faster through
trade.

The entries for the fresh fruit competition were judged by an expert panel
consisting of Mr. Sanjeev Kadkade[ Head of Dept, Institute of Hotel
Management, Porvorim], Ms.Ana Dias e Camara and Mr. Olavio Fernandes, both 
members of BSG and officers of Goa Directorate of Agriculture. All three 
judges have long experience in judging fruit quality through organo-leptic 
tests. the test of the pudding is in the eating! One random fruit was picked 
up by the judges and tasted to arrive at the final conclusion among the fruits 
that had good appearance or visual characteristics.

In the FRUIT EATING competition with mangoes, papaya, watermelon or banana
that one had to eat in 2 minutes there was a large number of entries. Previous
bench marks of 1.3 kg mango pulp, 1.65 kg papaya and 2.2 kg watermelon pulp in 
5 minutes were bettered.

Fruits were weighed before and after the set time to obtain the net weight of 
the pulp that is eaten. Suresh Naik has been the pace setter last year while 
Tejesh Talkadkar was the pace setter in 2003.He just could not win all the four
fruit categories this time, try though he did! After eating or, rather, 
hogging 1.100 kg mango pulp in two minutes and as much papaya after a 30
minute break, he had to stop after eating 600g of watermelon. Nizar N.K of
Miramar pipped him by eating 1.7 Kg of watermelon and even Neela Pai
Bhandare outdid him with 650g watermelon to come third.

There was a fruit fancy dress competition at 5.30 P.M. followed by a
MAGIC SHOW by Reggie and rocking MUSIC by Newton & Ness.

Last year, many persons were disappointed that they could not taste, or
even get a whiff of, the Kokum wine prepared under the guidance of a
researcher at Goa University. Most people complained but some decided to
change the situation. Dr. John Rodrigues of Chichinim, who was formerly 
doing "Product Development" for Hoechst [Hext] medicines now has four variants 
of Kokum wine in both ,Sec[dry] and demi-Sec [semi-dry], types. You can smell

The ICAR-Goa Research Complex will promote new technologies. So will the 
University of Agricultural Sciences-Dharwad and the Konkan Krishi Vidyapeth's 
Regional Fruit Research Station-Vengurla. RFRS-Vengurla will also demonstrate 
equipment used for fruit processing.

The seeds of change grow on Jatropha curcas, the bio-diesel plant. The Pilar 
Nature Farm will promote Jatropha for planting along the boundaries as bio-
fence and on wasteland to revegetate them while earning good revenue through 
bio-diesel. Fossil fuel is not going to last forever. Jatropha is not 
recommended as an alternative to any crop, it is a good supplement in Goa 
conditions of climate, including labour availability and pilferage.

The Palki of Vital Rakhumai visited Betim, so did Yama the god of death.
While one was in a palanquin, the other dispensed of his buffalo and rode in
a Maruti Omni car for a change. The fire-crackers announced his arrival and
two brothers ...Deeptesh [meaning 'god of light']Sawant aged 14 years and
Dheeraj[ meaning 'courage'] Sawant aged 10 years... went up in smoke. They
were sacrificed for the sake of the celebration. How else can one view their
deaths??

Meanwhile, three other teenagers Kedar Sawant and Bhavesh Fadte, both aged
14 years , and  Aditya Sawant aged 16 years have suffered serious burn
injuries and will most likely follow their brothers to Yamraj.

police file these criminal cases before the competent authorities?? The
organisers of the 'palki' also cannot wash their responsibility even if they
manage to transfer the guilt as "an act of God" as is often done to shift
responsibility of wrong doing.

May the souls of the dead brothers not rest in peace till those guilty of
negligence that caused their death are brought to book.

It is really sad to hear of Alfie's {Alfred D'Souza of Saligao Abreuvaddo]
death. Britto boys of my age will
remember the very gentlemanly Alfred from the first year of the new course
SSC of 1975. He follows his class mate, Charlton, and his own brother Eric's
footsteps...in dying young.  He was a nice soul. He was earler a Radio
Officer on the ship and now working for ONGC offshore in Mumbai as a radio
operator.

Alfred expired of a massive heart attack last night in Margao, where he had
gone for a check up after complaining of tiredness and pain. Alfred Vincent
de Souza, son of Joan and Late Eddie De Souza, leaves behind his  wife
Lynette, and three wonderful children, Shawna[11 years], Conroy[10] and the
little Annika[6].

In 1986, I met his brother for the first time as he was interested in
mushrooms. The end of the
year was also the end of Eric. He died of a road accident. Truly, Death
comes like a thiefand takes the most valuable persons from amongst us.


Alfie's wife, Lynette, is the sister of my classmate, Tommy D'Souza [SSC
class of 1976], the Franchisee of NIIT in Goa and Panch of the Assagao
Village Panchayat . She is also the sister of Ivonne[ wife of Rui Gama of
Verna]; Sr.Mariazita A.C. and Arsenia aka Fatima[ wife of Antonio of Aldona]
and Gerard.

So sad, so nice, the days that are no more.

Every member of the "Public" believes that he or she is a member of the
jury. Some persons on Goanet even appoint themselves as judges who do not
need to consider any evidence at all. What they think, they believe to be
the ultimate truth ;-(

Even the cops have no time to collect the evidence and analyse the facts of
the case. It is easier to issue a press note, still easier to hold a press
conference and a cake walk to selectively "leak" information to the gullible
crime reporters or their bigger brothers in the press.
What you think people may say, has already been said before..and
believed in some cases in UP and Madhya Pradesh.

People do not think on Goanet...they 'post'. Who said one must think before
they write on the Net.  Libel? What is that?

People do not even consider that the priest is not a member of this forum or
this world. He is dead. He cannot defend himself.

He may have been wrong...but we do not have any proof/evidence on which to
base such a conclusion. Afra, Joe, Godfrey do not need evidence. They KNOW.
That's it for them. If tomorrow someone alleges things about them...or their
spouse,sister, brother, mother... I hope they can withstand the debate
on Goanet.

PRATIMA PRABHAKAR KAMAT
Pratima Prabhakar Kamat is Reader in the Department of History, Goa
Univer-sity. She has been teaching at the University for the last 15 years.
After receiving an education in different parts of India and also abroad,
she completed her doctorate in History from the University of Bombay.  She
was Head, Depart-ment of History, Goa University (1999-2002) and served as
Teacher-In-Charge, Centre for Women's Studies, Goa University. She is
recognized as a Ph.D. guide in History at Goa University.  Her field of
specialisation is Indo-Portuguese History.  She is the author of the book -
Farar Far (Crossfire): Local Resistance to Colonial Hegemony in Goa
1510-1912 (published in 1999). Pratima Kamat has participated in and
presented research papers at a number of national and inter-national
conferences on Indo-Portuguese History and has published extensively in
journals and books in India and abroad.  She is the recipient of several
academic awards and research scholarships.  She is a member of a number of
professional associations and social organisations

CELSA PINTO
Celsa Pinto is an Education Administrator, Government of Goa. She was born
in Karachi, Pakistan, where she did most of her schooling, preparing for the
Senior Cambridge Examination. She was awarded the M.A. degree by the
University of Bombay and holds a doctorate in Indo-Portuguese Trade History
from Goa University. Apart from research papers published in reputed
journals, she is the author of three books - Trade and Finance in Portuguese
India: a study of the Portuguese Country Trade, 1770-1840 (published in
1994), Goa: Images and Perceptions, Studies in Goan History (1996), A
Commercial Resurgence, 1770 -1830, Situating Indo-Portuguese Trade History
(2003). She has published several research papers and has participated in
national and international History conferences and seminars.

MARIA DE LOURDES BRAVO DA COSTA RODRIGUES
Maria de Lourdes Bravo da Costa Rodrigues has a M.A. in History and a degree
in Library Science. She is a Senior Librarian at the State Central Library
in Panaji. She has devoted much of her time to research work specializing in
Indo-Portuguese History. She has participated in several national and
international conferences. Local newspapers - the Navhind Times, Herald,
Gomantak Times and magazine Goa Today - and academic journals have often
published her well-researched articles. She is the author of the book -
Tasty Morsels: Goan Food Ingredients & Preparation (published 2000).

It is not always money. Most of the lower rung cops are put on "bandobust" 
duty whenever a VIP comes to Goa or there is a festival or rioting. The police 
who cannot "bhandh" go "bust". It is no joke standing in the sun for 5 to 7 
hours without food or wateror a kind word at the end of the day. 

It is true that the cops do not deliver on crime detection. It is also true 
that their morale is so low that they just do not care. The policeman's duty 
needs to be defined in a manual. The CMs and Dy.CMs roaming about with 10 
policemen in tow do nothing to increase the force. 10  police in 3 shifts 
means that 30 policemen are overworked . No one takes over their duties in the 
respective police stations.

I know policemen working 14 hours a day 7 days a week without leave or 
relaxation. there needs to be some games room and a place to have a good 
shower at every police station. Some days the police stations do not even have 
enough water to wash the plates during summer.

Fred's Bluff drew some interesting responses from both Gabriel and Fred. In 
1961 we were free, whether by liberation or by conquest. In  reality, many of 
us are as free as the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee in Goa. In the 
absence of take-off space of our habit.we are grounded. 

  THE BUZZARD, BAT AND BUMBLEBEE

BUZZARD: If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet  
by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird,
in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute
prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a
flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet.
Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not
even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for
life in a small jail with no top.
BAT: The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a
remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off
from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or
flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly
and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight
elevation from which it can throw itself into the air.
Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

BUMBLEBEE: A bumblebee, if dropped into an open
tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is
taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the
top, but persists in trying to find some way out
through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way
where none exists, until it completely destroys
itself.

PEOPLE In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat
and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our
problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we
have to do  is LOOK UP  !

Absolutely. Ultra sound is not banned in India, sex determination by
Ultrasound [ or any ohter means] is.
We need to have girls if we want to have our boys to marry women. There is
no other way...unless one thinks of importing/cloning brides ;-(
Getting "professionals" to manage their ethics is easier with the older
professions than the newer ones.

In journalism, one does not bat an eyelid before 'converting' a press
release into a 'report'...or  even claiming it to be a 'scoop'.
Gynaecologists in India do not perform 'abortions', they just do a D & C for
a pretty young Miss who is 'just a ltle bit pregnant'.

There is an opportunity cost to it. Just like mineral water is more
expensive in a 5-star hotel or at a ODI than in a roadside dhaba or a
teashop in town.

Valpoi, from 08.00 A.M.on 02 April, 2006.The team led by Director-Club
Services of Rotary Club of Mapuca, Dr.Digambar Naik, along with Dr. Anagha
Chanekar, other doctors and paramedics will attend the camp.  Dr.P.G.Dalal
[Ph.2374219] will co-ordinate at Valpoi and Mr. Kaka Karmalkar
[Ph.2374202]at Nagargao in association with Mr Shankarrao Fadtare[2326018,
9422643281] at Faria Farms, Naneli. Names should be registered with the
above persons, the Village Panchayat office of Nagargao or with the Panchas
by Friday 31 March, 2006, so that arrangements for testing and breakfast can
be made.

Participants in the campaign have been requested to come on a hungry stomach
to enable "fasting blood sugar" testing. Breakfast will be provided and
testing will be done free. There will be an interactive session on how to
detect signs of diabetes and what diet to follow to reduce chances of
diabetes. The interaction will be in the local language.

RESPONSE

Wonderful proposal form Mr. P.Rodrigues and, I believe, Domnic speaks for
many of us, in Goa and abroad. It should be easy to learn Konkani via the
internet. Let us not worry too much about the dialects now. Instead let us
use the commonest words that we know. "Capacidade", "Duens" are actually
borrowed words, but even the Devanagri script newspaper Sunaparant uses
them. They are commonly understood and used even though we have "authentic"
Konkani words for them.
I am associated with the publication of GOENCHO ULO a tabloid in Konkani
written in the Roman Script which is available easily at www.fullerlife.in
and www.goacom.com/joel/konkani and other websites, as also through a link
on the Daily Goa News Clippings put out by its editor, Joel D'Souza. The
tabloid has more readers on the Net than we can afford to print copies here.
People have been writing to us that the tabloid is easy to read and that the
illustrations make it easy to understand. Cecil Pinto even has a column in
English on teaching of Konkani in the Goencho Ulo.

We need to progress towards a common dialect for Konkani literature. The dia
lects should survive for the rich diversity of colloquial Konkani to
continuously inspire us. From the curse words 'Tacher shirem marum" in
Pernem to lamentation "Taka shir podonknam" in Salcete there is a beauty in
the nuances of the dialects.

I look forward to the internet teaching of Konkani. It will obviously have
to be in the Roman script.

The column "Shendde todd" of Principal Subhash Velingkar in the SUNAPARANT
of 23 March, 2006 makes interesting reading. He is almost nostalgic about
the Portuguese colonial rulers and Bhausaheb Bandodkar for promoting 1.
Marathi education in Goa and 2. "Nationalizing" the Catholics of Goa through
a native language, Marathi. The Congress, on the other hand , is accused of
'anglicizing' the Goans since 1980.

According to Velingkar, the Congress is now delivering a body blow to the
local language eduction by asking the BJP-VHP groups to return possession of
21 schools entrusted to them for operation by the then Parrikar regime. The
loss of 318 students to the VHP is going to ring the death knell of Konakni
and Marathi education in Goa and once again going to de-nationalise its
children. Imagine this happening when there are 905 Marathi and 79 Konkani
primary schools [GPS] run by the Goa Government and 126  Konkani schools run
by catholic organisations [like DSE and ABE] and 63 Marathi medium primary
schools run by other  societies and trusts in Goa. Transfer of 21 out of
1229 primary schools back to Government control brings the VHP to tears. I
wonder if it is about the loss of GPS or the loss of possession of the
property and infrastructure for VHP propaganda that is worrying Velingkar
more.

The best place to find a helping handis the end of one's own arm. If the 
NRIs, and NRI returnees, do not help themselves, nobody will. Native Goans 
elbow their way into Government-funded NRI organisiations for 1.Position, 2. a 
platform to make pious speeches with a captive audience or, where ever 
possible , for 3.pecuniary benefit, foreign junkets and the like. There is a 
trip happening end of this month to the Gulf . What the amn brought from 
Athens Olympics for hockey in Goa is information that there are Goans living 
in Greece!
 
Chandrakant Keni is at the moment that pious catholics pray for Our Lady's 
assistance in the "Holy Mary". What can he do for the NRIs?? What has he done 
for the NRIs in the last three years...Gomant Vishwa Sammellan and Gomant 
Darshan??
 
What did you achieve in the Global Goan Meet organised by Rene Barreto, the UK-
based NRI from Patrong?? More talk? Is there something concrete happening. My 
friends and I have spent our time trying to help Rene. In another two weeks he 
will be gone. Then we will hear about the World Goa Day again. WGD is 
goodbut it is not GOOD ENOUGH.
 
If you want to be a part of a vibrant NRI Association, start meeting like 
minded people, draw up a constitution, register it with the Registrar of 
Societies, raise Life Membership, say a US$100.00 or equivalent in INR, open a 
bank account. If you have 20 life members and 3 are willing to work one day a 
month for the association for a year, I will help you achieve what no NRI 
organisation has achieve so far in terms of ability to help a NRI when he is 
down in Goa for a month.
 
You have to be a part of the change that you want to see.
 
Light a lamp, don't curse the darkness.
 
Many hands make light work.

The English newspaper readers in Goa and elsewhere in the world may never
know that the Nagueshi-Bandora based last  'Raja' of Sonda passed away
on 19 March, 2006 and was cremated today at Nagzar-Curti, Ponda. A 2 column
by 10 cm Death Notice announcing the "Sad Demise" of Shrimant Savaiveer
Sadashiv Rajendra Basavling Vadiyar @ Raje Saundekar has been published in
the Navhind Times on  page 14 today with photo of the turbaned owner of that
name. Most readers will not be aware of its significance to the secular
character of Goa.

There is no news item in the English newspapers. This is a pity.  His death
is reported on the front page of the Marathi newspaper'Goa Dhoot' and the
Devanagri script Konkani newspaper 'Sunaparant'. That is as it should be. He
was the last in the long line of Kings who were the direct descendants of
the dynasty that ruled the Vijaynagar Empire from Hampi. Today, Sonda is a
small village, almost a hamlet, lost in the heavy rain forest between
Yellapur and Sirsi, in Karwar[North Kanara] District of Karnataka. I was a
bit surprised, and not at all amused, to read in the opening lines of a
front page report of a Konkani newspaper that Saundekar Raje was
"Karnatakantlea Sonde wattarantle Raja" when he was born and lived all his
life in Nagueshi-Bandoda, a short distance from the town of Ponda and
eductional hub of Farmagudi.The Kingdom of "Sonda" consisted of the talukas
of Ponda, Sanguem,Canacona and Quepem kept in the care of the Portuguese
from January, 1764 !!

According to Dr.P.S.Pisurlekar, Goas most eminent historian of modern
times: a detachment of Marathas invaded Salcete on 3rd January, 1739.
Margao fell on 26th. Soon the whole of Salcete, except the forts of Rachol
and Margao, came under the Marathas who then proceeded to take Sanguem,
Ponda and Quepem. These last three places did not actually belong to the
Portuguese, but to their friend and ally, the Raja of Sonda.

The Rajas of Sonda, known locally as the Raje Saundekar and as Rei de Sonda
by the Portuguese. They retained this title till Liberation. In January
1764, the then Raja of Sonda, Savaiveer Immodi Sadashiv Rajendra Vadiyar
[perhaps the same clan as Krishna Raja  Wodiyar of Mysore], fled from his
capital and come to seek asylum in Goa, complete with his "family and
treasure". The territory of 'Goa' then consisted of  Ilhas/Tiswadi, Bardez
and Salcet under the Portuguese Viceroy Conde de Ega. What had occasioned
Immodi Sadashivas flight was an attack by a column of Haider Ali, the
former General in the Mysore Raja's army and father of the legendary Tipu
Sultan, who had suddenly shot to the fore in the affairs of South India
The Raja offered to place his districts of Ponda, Zambaulim[Sanguem and
Quepem talukas] and Canacona in the 'safe keeping' of his friends, the
Portuguese, until such time as he was able to drive Haider Alis forces from
Sonda. In return, he wanted the Portuguese to give him refuge and also a
stipend for his expenses.

The Rajas of Sonda could never regain their lost kingdom and have lived
continuously in Goa since 1764. The last 'Raja' of Sonda who died at the
ripe age of 71 years has lived for 44 years in 'liberated' Goa. From 1774,
the Rajas have lived in "Shivtirth Palace" built when it became clear that
there was going to be a longer stay then anticipated.

If the Catholics of Goa dance the dekhni and sing "Hanv Saiba Poltoddi
vetam" and the Hindus worship Shri Mahalsa at Mardol in Ponda [instead of
the old Mardol in Verna] and Shri Shantadurga in Nagueshi-Bandora, they have
the Rajas of Sonda to thank. Writes a historian on Raja Immodi of Sonda,
"Given his antecedents, it was perhaps only natural that ImmodiSadahiva,
even in his adversity and when he was a supplicant for asylum, should have
thought it fit to make a stipulation that the Portuguese would continue the
endowments that were already made by the Rajas of Sonda to the temples and
other religious instutions in the area that he was now entrusting to the
care of the Portuguese. What is more surprising is that the Conde de Ega
should have so readily given in. But then, this too reflects how, over the
years, the religious policy of the Portuguese had become increasingly
tolerant. Now, while the Christians of Goa still continued to enjoy special
privileges, the other communities practicing their own rituals were not
thought of as an affront to Christianity. So, in 1764, Ponda, Sanguem,
Quepem and Canacona became Portuguese possessions and their erstwhile ruler
became a refugee in Goa." He remembered the Hindus, and their welfare, even
when he was a refugee himself. How can they forget his decendant?

Mystery surrounds the death of Fr.Eusebio Ferrao, who was found suffocated
to death this morning at the St. Francis Xavier's Church, Macasana ,
Salcete, Goa. the church is just a few kilometres away from Maina-Curtorim,
the home of the Speaker of Goa's Legislative Assembly, Francisco Sardinha.

Perhaps, Mr.Sardinha will bring his influence to bear on the Goa Police to
solve the crime. Otherwise, the Goa Police will add this crime to the long
list of church break-ins and vandalisation of crosses that remain as much a
mystery today as they were a year ago, much to the consternation of the
parishioners.

The BJP, through the Leader of the Opposition Mr. Manohar Parrikar, have
served notice that it will raise the issue of unsolved church break-ins and
vandalisation of crosses in the Legislative Assembly which will have a short
session from Monday, 20 march 2006. "Sarkaran kotten nak buddovpachem" (
"The government should dip its nose in a coconut shell" [filled with water
and kill itself] , as the Konkani saying goes) is the headline on page 1 of
the SUNAPARANT of 18 March that carries the report on his Press Conference.
And one thought that the catholics were safe during Congress rule in Goa and
at the centre ;-(

The killing of Fr.Eusebio Ferrao leaves no place for cheer.

  With grief and sadness we mourn the untimely death of our beloved
companion Fr. Eusebio A. Ferrao. At the time of his unfortunate death on
17th March, 2006, Fr. Eusebio was 61 years old and   the Parish Priest of
St. Francis Xavier's Church, Macasana , Salcete, Goa. Fr. Eusebio's death
has robbed us of a friend, a writer,a lively, yet simple priest and an able
administrator. While his death leaves us with huge void, we rejoice in our
colleague's life and thank God for his gift to our Archdiocese of Goa and
Daman.
Fr. Eusebio Agnelo Ferrao was born on August 14, 1944 and did his primary
education in Portuguese in his native Chinchinim, Salcet taluka. He joined
the Seminary of  Our Lady at Saligao-Pilerne during the Academic Year
1956-57 and successfully completed his course in Humanity. Thereafter, he
sought admission in the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol in 1962 and having
completed his philosophical and theological courses was ordained priest
along with his other twelve companions at St. Andrew's Church, Vasco da
Gama, on 26th April, 1970. St.Andrew's Church was celebrating 400 years of
its establishment [1570-1970] and the ordination was held here in this
honour.

Thereafter, Fr.Eusebio  joined the Pastoral Institute St. Pius X, Old Goa
and was appointed in 1971 ' On deputation to the Liturgical Commission at
Pastoral Institute, Old Goa'. His task was to  translate into Konkani  the "
Ritual" of the Catholic Church and also  some books of the New Testament of
the Bible including the Acts of the Apostles and the Letters of St. Paul to
the Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philomen, Letter to the Hebrews,
Letter of James and the Letter of Jude, published by the Archdiocese as the
"Povitr Pustok: Novo Korar" in 1974. This was necessitated by the post
Vatican Council-II directive to have the Church services in the 'language of
the people' from 1969, instead of the convention of Latin used universally
until then.This translation in Konkani was in the Roman script and serves as
referece material and Sunday readings for mass/service in Konkani throughout
Goa to this day.

 Fr.Eusebio's next appointment was at scenic church of Our Lady of Piedade
at Divar in 1975 as Assistant to the Parish Priest.  Still later he was
posted as a Chaplain at Ambelim Chapel at Assolna and in 1988 he was
promoted and appointed  Parish Priest of Carambolim, Ilhas, famous the world
over for the migratory birds. He was given the additional responsibility of
the Joint-Secretary of the Diocesan Commission for Liturgy in 1993. In the
same year, he was appointed Parish Priest of St.Lawrence Church, Agassaim
and also Dean if Goa-Velha Deanery and fimally the Parish Priest of
Macassana. He was also elected member of the Council of priest in  1992 and
1998 . He contributed numerous articles to the local konkani news-papers,
reviews, and magazines  om various topics and lately wrote on social issues
in the V. Ixtt. In the Liturgical Review " Amcho Sevadhorm" of the
Archdiocese he was a regular contibutor .
Fr. Eusebio was kind, unassuming, loving and a sympathetic pastor, who was
always approachable and available to his parishioners and others alike. For
Fr. Eusebio, his parish was the window through which he viewed God. He was
one with his parishioners, knowing their joys and their sorrows, their
trials and their pain. He knew the difficulties of his

The Goa Police is apparently preparing the grounds for a "Transfer Warrant"
from J & K Police or some "Central Investigating  Agency" or somebody to
bail them out when the shit hits the ceiling. The DGP should be asked to
issue a SIGNED Press Release. In the meanwhile,  The Goa Police is doing
both:  making all sorts of statements and denying all sorts of statements.
One day it may even deny having "arrested" the person and say he was only
"detained"...and that his name was Johnny Bravo, not Battlo at all!! Whoever
he may be, he will 'escape' form Police "custody" while being taken where
ever, when ever for what ever reason. The escape route has been prepared by
'leaking' information that he had escaped from custody in Kashmir before. I
do not know who has identified Battlo for the Goa Police. There is no
international alert for him that has been spoken about.Perhaps he is
travelling with his graduation marksheet, photo ID card and bonafide student
certificate ...just in case he got caught by the police.

It would be nice if the IPS officers went looking for Narcotics among the
other Kashmiris instead. Or may be the charas looks too much like RDX  that
may explode in their face and dry up their regular source of supplementary
income when salaries are just not enough to support their lifestyles in Goa.

What is so great about Battlo...except  as a smoke bomb on the Sanvordem
riots and alternative to the journos to write about.
Why did Sanvordem riots happen? Why were the politicians who defied Section
144 Prohibitory orders not arrested? Youth Congress President, Girish
Chodankar [currently Chairman of Horticulture Corporation] was arrested by
the very same police for staging a dharna on the bad conditions of the roads
and kept in the lock up. For inciting mob violence no such action is deemed
necessary now.

Konknni Academy (DKA) held at the TB Cunha hall here this evening, the
progress of the organisation which has been set up to give a fillip to
Konkani writers in the roman script was detailed. Speaking to GoaNewsClips,
President of DKA Wilson Mazarello said, "Several members suggested ways and
measures to strengthen the DKA as well as beef up the fight to ensure equal
status to roman script along with the Devanagri script. It was decided to
take the message to every city and village in Goa, as also to approach the
legislators to support the cause by bringing an amendment to the Official
Language Act 1987 so that roman script gets it due rights, which are today
available to only a handful of people." Mazarello further said, "It has been
unanimously agreed that DKA is not against the Devanagri script, but we only
demand respect and importance to the roman script which is being used by the

It is nice that the position of the Dalgado Konkani Akademi is clearly
stated by the President after the General body Meeting. A number of rumours
were floating around that DKA was fighting for Romi exclusivity to replace
the Devanagri exclusivity. It is a historical reality that 'exclusivity' has
obtained no gains for its protagnists. Even Hitler's progroms took him
nowhere. Neither Stalin's, nor those of Slavs in recent history of the
former Yugoslavia.

It is quite unfortunate that we ware not a part on the Indian Census of
1961, as Goa ,Daman & Diu was still a part of Estado da India
Portuguesa[E.I.P.]. I wonder if there was a 1951 census in EIP. It would
tell us if the proportion of Christians to Hindus had changed significantly
during the Salazar-Marcel Caitano era from the  63.83% to 35.41% of 1851 . I
doubt it. The census of 1971 shows a complete reversal with Hindus at 62.43%
and Christians at 33.97% and a actual population of 4lakh 96 thousand Hindus
in 1971 from just 1lakh 28 thousand in 1851. This is a staggering 285 % or
almost three-fold INCREASE  in the Hindu population. The increase in the
Christian [almost entirely Roman Catholic] population during the same 120
year period is just 38 thousand [37,937 to be exact!] or 16 %. This is
definitely not due to a sudden rise in the fecundity of the native Hindu
population or the inexplicable inability of the local catholics to produce
children. The answers must be found in the migration patterns of the two
communities.

If the Hindus in Goa have doubled their percentage population while halving
that of the Catholics, why are they suddenly scared of the  4% population of
Muslims in Goa unless the Devanagri Konkani writing section of that
Community is  afraid that the Muslims from North Kanara have reached parity
with them in the old EIP Goa, man to man.

Adil Shah and other Bijapuri rulers, yet this community lives like a
shadow, due to the misconception that they are migrants and the recent
media coverage portraying them as a violent, backward lot, seems to have
followed them to Goa too. The pre-liberation Muslim community, numbering
about 20,000 is considered 'indigenous' and is found in pockets of
Ponda, Valpoi, Sanquelim, Bicholim and Betul. These areas being used for
strategic defense by the Ruler of the time gradually became home to the
Muslim soldiers working in the area. The more recent settlers in Goa are
however found in cities like Vasco, Margao, Panjim, Mapusa and are here
as business men and to service the construction industry. Most of these
Muslims can be traced back to the other parts of the Konkan, namely,
Karwar, Ratanagari, Mangalore, Karnataka and Maharashtra a few also hail
from Uttar Pradesh. This influx of migrant has seen the population grow
to an approximate 60,000.

Even during the Portuguese time, the Muslim community was economically
and socially backward which resulted in a low educational level.

Apart for the religious factor, Mr. Khan who was born and brought up in
Goa, feels there is little or no difference between them and the rest of
us Goans. Most of the Goan Muslims belong to the Suni sect. Many know
Arabic, so they can read the Koran though there is little opportunity in
Goa for higher education, as a result all the Mullah's in Goa (except
one) are from UP and Bihar.

Dispelling some of the myths associated with the religion, Mr. Khan
informed that the Koran does not permit more than one wife except under
specific conditions of altruism. Another myth that Mr. Khan dispelled is
that concerning Jehad, which according to him means 'to be prepared for
self sacrifice', so that one can purify oneself of ones vices and stand
worthy on the day of judgment and it does not mean to destroy oneself or

As far as I know Tariq Anwar is a Congressman [INC or NCP] from the Hindi
belt, Bihar in all probability. He may not find these Tribune and PTI
reports funny ;-(

The correct name of the tourist is , I believe, Tariq Ahmed Battlo Jalal.
The Police are yet to produce evidence that he was a terrorist and , if so,
why
he was allowed to live for nine months in Goa before being delivered in the
Police lockup. There is a confusion about the train and its final
destination, too. If the Police know he boarded the train in Delhi, perhaps
they can show the Press a xerox of the Delhi-Margao ticket to show they did
not board the train in Goa. We will wait to hear more from Rupesh Sawant of
the PTI
Bureau in Goa.

PANJIM, MARCH 10 - The arrest of  Tariq Ahmed Battlo in Margao has
opened a Pandora's Box as many questions remain unanswered in the case.
While the police claimed that the Srinagar man was apprehended at the
Margao Railway Station on March 10, highly placed sources in the police
department told Herald that  the man was detained by the police a week
ago.** He was being interrogated by the bigwigs of the Goa police in the
last few days.

To questions from media persons earlier this week, top police officers
had denied that any terrorists had been arrested. Tariq was however
arrested today for the record.

Interestingly, a Herald staffer had received a call at 2 pm** informing
that a Srinagar man had been held with RDX.  But the police told media
that the police "swooped" on Tariq at the Margao Railway Station at 8.45
pm.** This only appears to have been dramatised by the police to record
his arrest apparently to cover up for loose ends.  What was astonishing
was why the police went to the press within 25 minutes of the arrest.

I had made one more point: No religion claims that its god is deaf. In any
case, worhip of god pre-dated the advent of sound amplification devices. So
where is the need to fit loudspeakers OUTSIDE the place of worship. Those
who wish to pray need to enter the place of worship.

A good place to begin the LEGAL demolitions of the ILLEGAL by the Goa
Administration is the illegal shrine of Our Lady of Valainkani over the
Municipal Storm water drain and part of the Asilo Hospital facing the
Casaualty and OPD, Mhapsa. All the property on which the said shrine stands
belongs to the Goa Government and it has full right to recover its property
as per law. The shrine , though illegal has been blessed by Fr. Roque
Barreto, the then Parish Priest of St. Jerome Church Mapusa, and has the BJP
MLA of Mapusa constituency, Francis D'Souza, as one of its patrons. It
regularly uses the prohibited 'funnel' loudspeakers to amplify the prayers
and disturb the already traumatized victims of accidents as well as the
in-patients of the Asilo Hospital, to say nothing of the in-mates of the Old
Age home next door.

Recently, one employee of a  bank is learnt to have put up an illegal grotto
by trespassing into private property adjoining an existing chapel in Aldona.
The Parish Priest has correctly refused to 'bless' it. Will the Village
Panchayat demolish it, since it would have been erected without a
construction licence? Illegality cannot be permitted in the name of God. The
Bible is clear, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's." or give the
Government its due.

We also need to demolish the mini temples and shrines at the entrance of the
Municipal market, opposite Ashok Hotel and opposite Ticlo's Petrol Pump. Our
Hindu bretheren have the Maruti temple , the Laxmi-Narayan Temple and a host
of local shrines from Bodgueshwar to Rashtroli dedicated to the "Rakhondar"
of pre-Hindu believers. The Catholics have the Church and a number of
Chapels all over Mhapsa. So there is absolutely no need for new structures,
specailly ILLEGAL  ones. and no god is deaf. Scream your heart out, but
keep the amplifier and sound system within the four walls of the prayer
house. You are infringing on the rights of others to a better quality of
life.

Tariq Ahmad Battlo Jalal is the name of the tourist that resided at Rosa
Mystica Apartments Sirvodem-Navelim, a short distance away from Margao, for
the last  eight months. Zarina Shah, the former Vice-Chairperson of Margao
Municipal Council is alleged to have introduced Tariq as Ishq Bhat to
Ms.Clara Gonsalves, the owner of the flat. Zarina is a Congress politician.
She is alleged to have paid the first six months rent for the flat at
monthly intervals. The Goa Police are alleged to have picked Tariq on 03
March, 2006. They even tried to take Ms.Clara Gonsalves for 'debriefing' or
interrogation.

The mystery is who got the hand grenades [real or dud] and the 1 kg packet
of substance suspected to be RDX [ it is hoped that at least the weight is
correct] for the Goa Police. "Planting" incriminating 'evidence' is
something that is routinely learnt by the Goa Policemen from ANC who have
made extortion a fine art. they could even be appointed as faculty in the
Goa College of Fine Arts that could anly develop a model for "gang rape" in
which the victim has the hymen intact.

Time the Goa Police sent their cadres to Mumbai, UP or Delhi to learn the
art of fake "encounters". Dead men tell no lies. Custodial deaths are messy
[refer Abdul Gaffar case in Margao]. And live prisoners can  turn 'hostile'
witnesses. The Goa Police are bound to have a close encounter of a kind they
do not want...except if they send the inconvenient prisoner out to some
other state on a "transfer warrant" . Publicity works both ways. Parrikar is
learning this from Vishwajeet. "Chota muh, baddi baath."

Those who forget their history are bound to see it recurr in their own
lifetime. In Goa we are seeing a recurrence within 15 months. The only
difference this time is that they have targetted a community that reacts,
instead of a community that just dithers. Bingo!

This is what I wrote on 19 December, 2004, after the abortive attempt by the
Manohar Parrikar-led regime to screen the infamous VCD of the Education
Dept. 'GOA'S FREEDOM STRUGGLE' in predominantly Church run primary and
secondary schools. It holds good today also when Sanvordem-Curchorem is
souldering and Ponda, Shiroda, Cuncolim or Margao may ignite. Warning has
been served by the BJP by organizing benami bandhs on Monday 06 March, 2006.
As usual, expect the GOA POLICE to be caught napping and even to treat the
riots like we treat footballas a  spectator event. A major part of the
Goa Police constables were BJP recruited from its cadres and sympathisers or
those who bought their appointment letters from the Congress leaders. In
either case, there is no incentive to act. the IPS officers come to Goa on a
holiday, it seems. I am yet to hear of one of them lead from the front..as
the fiery lady Kiran Bedi,IPS, did at Turkman Gate-Delhi. If the IPS cops in
Goa got guts, they must be stashed in some safe deposit locker in Delhi for
later use. Pansies would react with greater forceand conviction.

"The Goa BJP's priority is apparently in bastardizing history so much
that it does not  tell it like it was printed in the Goa Government's
publications and school
textbooks issued by the very same Directorate of Education. I quote from "
HISTORY & CIVICS Standard Five" text book issued by the "Directorate of
Education Governement of Goa" in 2002 [ i.e.under the same BJP dispensation
in Goa]which my son currently studies in a school aided by the Government of
Goa. I quote from the text verbatim [ 'all capitals" for emphasis' mine]
from page5

Quote "Chapter 2 EARLY RULERS-II.
 GOA UNDER THE VIJAYNAGAR AND BADAMI RULE:
In the 14th century, Goa was a great trading centre. It imported good
quality horses from Persia and Arabia. These horses were in great demand in
the Deccan. The rulers of both,Vijaynagar and Badami were at war with each
other. Both wanted Goa mainly because of the HORSE TRADE. So Goa was at
different times OCCUPIED by the rulers of Vijay nagar and Badami.

GOA UNDER BIJAPUR:
Yusuf Adil Shah brought Goa into the Kingdom of Bijapur. He was a powerful
ruler. He encouraged agriculture , art and literature. He was TOLERANT  to
all religions.Under him, Hindus were given religious freedom. Some of them
were given high civil and military posts.
Yusuf Adil Shah developed the PORT OF GOA by constructing a main road from
the jetty of River Mandovi at OLD GOA right up to the PALACE of Adil Shah
[present Secretariat] for trade and commerce. The PORT of Old Goa later
became the capital city under Portuguese rule.  Unquote

Chapter-3 has this to say.
 Quote. After 1498, Portugal sent fleets to India from time to time, to keep
the spice trade of the MALABAR under Portuguese control. One of these fleets
was under AFONSO DE ALBUQUERQUE, who had a dream of establishing a
Portuguese empire in the East.
CONQUEST OF GOA
Afonso de Albuquerque had heard of the importance of Goa's location on the
West coast of India. He felt that the conquest of Goa would strengthen the
Portuguese rule over the Arabian Sea. TIMMAYA, the Admiral of the Vijaynagar
fleet, INVITED  him to free the Hindu population from the unbearable rule of
Bijapur at Goa. On March1,1510, Albuquerque sailed up the river Mandovi,
captured and looted ships at Goa harbour. No one opposed him.
Two months later, Ismail Adil Shah, King of Bijapur, sent a large army to
Goa. It drove the Portuguese into the sea. Unquote.

less than Rs.20/-. It may be nice if the Director of Education, the high
profile Deputy Director of Education [Vocational ] Shri Anil V.Powar and the
self-styled educationist honoured at the behest of his guru [Murli Manohar
Joshi ] Shri Subhash Velingkar, read the official history. Still better,
they could read an unbiased view fo history in INSIDE  GOA written by
acclaimed author Manohar Mulgaokar and the first edition published by the
Government of Goa,Daman & Diu in 1982.THE REASON why the second edition [in
May 2004] was REFUSED this patronage [when Rs.40 lakhs could be spent on the
VCD film] by the Goa Government may need an application under the RIGHT TO
INFORMATION ACT.  The author only alludes to this in his note in a way only
refined writers can. The book is available at Braodway,Panaji, for just
Rs.695/- I have had the pleasure of reading this wonderful book and to
review it for the GOA TRAVELLER and   EXPO PLUS

  Agriculture Minister Francisco  Pacheco inaugurated the 'Green Mormugao' 
Plant Exhibition at the Municipal Garden, Vasco, in the presence of Rajendra 
Arlekar, MLA; Simon D'Souza, former MLA; Dr.H.Y.Karapurkar, Chairman of Goa 
State Biodiversity Board and Elvis Gomes, Chief Officer of MMC; among other 
dignitaries.
   
  Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pacheco said that he fully supports the demand 
of Mormugao Municipal Council and the people of Mormugao taluka that a Zonal 
Agriculture Office (Z.A.O.)should be established in this taluka as in the 
other ten talukas of Goa. He welcomed the resolution passed by the MMC on 23 
February, 2006, and said that he would have the Z.A.O. established by his 
Ministry in the next week if the MMC provides office space to house it  till 
alternate premises are found. He then went round the exhibition of 
flowering,ornamental plants and bonsai as well as the exhibits of Goacan, 
Pilar Nature Farm, Chemtrol and the plant nurseries.

  The exhibition and competitions at GREEN MORMUGAO are open to
 public.Competitions in Vegetable carving, flower arrangements and watermelon
 eating will be held on Saturday 04 March from 4 P.M. onwards.Participants
 have to bring their own materials for the competitions.This will be preceded
 by a drawing competition for school students in two catergories, Std. V to
 VII and Std VIII to SSC, for which drawing paper will be provided, at 3.00 
P.M.. There is no entry fee.
 
The judging for the first All Mormugao Home Garden competition organised by
 the St.Andrew's Social Forum, MMC and Botanical Society of Goa was held on 26
 February, 2006.  The criteria for judging the gardens were : 
Presentation/Visual impact, health of plants, cleanliness of the garden and 
care of plants.Bonus points were given for re-use of waste water, composting 
of garden/kitchen waste and planting/maintenance of road side trees near the 
competitor's house. The prizes will be given at the GREEN MORMUGAO Plant 
Exhibition on Sunday, 5 March,2006, at 4.30  P.M. at Parque Infantil/ 
Children's Park, opposite LaPaz Gardens, Vasco -Goa.

Dears,

There has been some confusion in the minds of many on the role of the Roman
Catholic Church in Goa in the ongoing movement to promote the use, and
acceptance, of Konkani in Roman Script all over Goa. A large part of this
confusion is intentionally generated to creat a rift among those who read
and write in Roman script, the script in which we write English and
communicate on the net.
 Reproduced below is an extract of an interview with Mr. Tomazinho Cardoz,
Immediate Past President of the Dalgado Konkani Akademi, former Speaker of
the Goa Legislative Assembly, one of the leaders of  the Konkani Porjecho
Avaz and the Consulting Editor of GOENCHO ULO [read world wide on the Net
www.fullerlife.com ; www.goanet.org; www.goaworld.com/goa/ ; www.goacom.com
/konkani and as tabloid hardcopies circulated free in Goa] with reference to
the rally of DKA on 10 February, 2006 at the Azad maidan, Panaji-Goa :

In brief, the above statement talks about the message from the Archbishop's
residence [ NOT  from the Archbishop himself  but, according to some
sources, by a priest working there.] to the Parish Priests not to read a
notice sent by the DKA for the courtesy of announcement. [Such notices from
institutions and clubs are routinely read in churches for information].
Inspite of the confusion more than a thousand people gathered at Azad Maidan
[The first rally of KPA had only 32 persons].Catholic priests not only
attended the rally but also addreeed from the stage erected at the venue.
This was the victory, said Tomazinho.

" As long as Konkani in the Roman script is used in our churches, till then
it is absolutely wrong to state that the Archbishop and the Catholic Church
in Goa does not support Roman script for Konkani" said Tomazinho Cardoz.

"The good news is that in a short time from now, the Old Testament of the
Bible will be published in Roman script with an expenditure of about Rs.70
lakhs." Need anything be said about the importance of the Roman script for
Konkani in our religious interaction?

The issue is clear. The confusion needs to be cleared from the minds of
those who are confused by the conflicting signals coming from the lower
echelons of the clergy at Paco Patriarchal, Altinho, Panaji. Unauthorised
use of the Archbishop's  office is abuse of the trust that the laity reposes
in the clergy. The Rachol Seminay teacher who took the oath for "one
language, one script, one community" at a public forum on 12 February, 2006,
needs to explain whether he speaks for himself or pretends to speak for the
church or the Roman Catholic communityin Devanagri. Fortunately, he did
not wear his cassock for the event.

Dears,

Seven years back at a workshop in Whitefield Bangalore, one Resource Person
from Europe had expressed his inability to address the delegates on 'poverty
alleviation' because he was uncomfortable without airconditioning in the
seminar hall. I was shocked.

Now it is reported that there is a Bishop in Bangalore who finds it fit to
spend Rs.Rs 4,90, 912 /- on a full page colour advertisement in the
sparingly read newspaper, the Deccan Herald [ for which the Goa
correspondent  was Fred  earlier and Devika Sequiera is now] to show his
concern for the poor and the marginalised. How sweet??

Archbishop Moras' Full Page Colour Advertisement In Newspaper Criticized

BANGALORE, Karnataka (SAR NEWS) -- A full-page colour advertisement
issued by Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore during the Catholic
Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has kicked up a controversy, many
questioning the need to spend such a huge amount of money.

The advertisement published on Feb. 8 on the occasion of 27th General
Body Meeting of CBCI held Feb.8-15 in the garden city cost the
archdiocese Rs 4,90, 912 with a discount while the commercial rate for
the same is Rs 6,05,450.

The colour advertisement, first of its kind, was issued to one of the
Bangalore-based leading English daily Deccan Herald.

Scores of lay Catholics and priests told SAR News that the advertisement
was a "sheer waste of precious money of the people" which could have
been used for constructive purposes of the poor.

Some Catholic Church officials said there was no need to spend such a
big amount for an advertisement in one newspaper. They added that it
could have been used effectively for "better purposes".

The incumbent Cardinal Telesphore P.Toppo, Archbishop of Ranchi,
Archbishop Bernard Moras and a couple of other bishops were in the hot
race for the post of president of CBCI. Cardinal Toppo won with a
thumping majority polling 130 votes while Archbishop Moras polled "a
couple of votes" in the first straight ballot, highly placed sources.

"The Archdiocese of Bangalore issued the advertisement with the generous
contribution from the people for the love of the bishops gathered in the
city", Archbishop Moras, in a telephonic interview told SAR News Feb.
17.

Defending the advertisement, he said there could be "many opinions" on
the issue but "I have not heard any single complaint about it till
date".

When queried that the parish priests of the archdiocese were "forced" to
contribute money, the prelate said, "Nobody was forced to send the
money. I had only appealed to the parishes in my official circular to
help out."

CBCI spokesperson Father Babu Joseph said, "The CBCI had nothing do with
the full-page colour advertisement issued to one English newspaper.
Instead of spending so much money for one advertisement, the amount
could have been better utilized to ensure coverage in all the media,
including the popular electronic media".

Besides, he said, he was disappointed that there was "no coverage in the
mainstream media" and only towards the end the CBCI event got "some
press publicity of the important event."

"It was a free, fair and very democratic election for the post of the
prestigious CBCI President which was carried out without canvassing,
rancour and partisanship," another highly placed Church official said.

About 160 bishops participated in the biennial general body meeting,
deliberating on the theme Catholic Education and Church's Concern for
the Marginalized.

Oops,

I had identified the Indian Silk Cotton tree without looking at the attached 
photo. Saw the photo. It is not the Silk Cotton tree but the Milk Weed 
plant "Calotropis gigantea".  This plant is locally known as 'Ruiee'. Its 
milky latex is uised to soften the skin for extracting thorns from the flesh. 
It is used as a herbal insecticide in rice fields. Its papery fine seed is 
dispersed by silky white hair which look like the flowers of the Powder puff 
or the Rain Tree.

Kids enjoy bursting the purple to mauve flower buds.

GREENING MINDS: GREENING GOA

The Botanical Society of Goa held its annual general body meeting [AGM] on
Sunday 19 February, 2006, at the World Wide Fund for Nature- Goa Unit office
in the Science Centre complex, Miramar.   Plant lovers from all over Goa
attended.

 The BSG is registered in Goa under the Societies Act, 1860  on 05 May,
1990. It is a pro-Nature activity group, not normally involved in advocacy.
It interacts with both, NGOs and Government agencies.
Prizes were awarded to the winners of the 11th annual Home Garden
Competition in the amateur and  profesionally assisted categories of home
gardens separately. The BSG acknowledged with pride the contibution of
Mr.P.G.Kakodkar, including the roadside trees on the Miramar marine bypass
and the work initiated at Goa University under the umbrella of the WGKF.

Dr.Ajit Shirodkar, Chairman of the Western Ghats Kokum Foundation (WGKF),
stated that while the WGKF and the BSG were two separate legal entitites,
they worked in unision on many issues. This was imperative for quick and
sustained growth of horticulture in Goa. While the WGKF's focus is on
Garcinia indica, it is willing to collaborate on other plant issues as
demonstrated at its Biodiversity Project at Goa University. Mr.P.G.Kakodkar
may have worked all over India but his roots were firmly in Goa, the state
in which he spent his childhood and to which he has dediciated the rest of
his life.

The Secretary, Ms Christina de Souza, in her report acknowledged the support
of the Department of Science ,Technology & Environment, the Corporation of
the City of Panaji, the ICAR-Goa, and other Government and autonomous
agencies as well as NGOs  in presenting the successful annual events like
the  Konkan Fruit Fest and Plant Utsav. The Treasurer presented the accounts
for the year 2004-05 audited by the Chartered Accountants. Both the report
and the accounts were approved unanimously.

 Dr.K.G.Hiremath proposed that a common interactive workshop be held for all
environment related NGOs in Goa to emphasize the commonalities and work on
some more projects jointly. The other activities proposed are:


 #Collaboration with Mormugao Municipal Council to conduct the GREEN
MORMUGAO
 exhibition 3 to 5 March, 2006

 # Continued interaction with the Government for 'Geographical Indications'
 registration of feni for Goa.

 #Survey and documentation of cultivated cereal, fruit, spice and vegetable
 crop varieties in Goa.

 #Publication of quarterly BUDSPORT newsletter and project reports.

 #4th Konkan Fruit Fest at Panaji with CCP from 5 to 7 May, 2006 with the
spotlight on Jamun or
 Jamlam [Eugenia jambulana], its juice, seed powder and wine as a health
 drink suitable for diabetics.

 #Interaction with the Goa Knowledge Commission to include agricultural
 topics in language (English,Hindi,Konkani,Marathi,etc), Foundation Course
and Environmental Science [EVS]
 curriculum at school, higher secondary school and college levels as well as
for creating a suitable framework for non-formal and formal courses in
horticulture at the UG and PG levels..

 #Interaction with the Goa Board of Education for updating the curriculum
for
 vocational courses in Horticulture and Floriculture.

 #Technical support to institutions to conduct  training courses in
gardening;fruit cultivation
 and solid waste management.

 # Support to Festival of Plants and Flowers at SFX school, Siolim, and
other
 member institutions.

 # Hikes and Nature Trails for members and invitees.

 # 9th PLANT UTSAV in November, 2006

 #12th Home Garden Competition in January, 2007.

Life membership is Rs.1000/- only for individuals, while Patron membership
is Rs.10,000/-. One member in each type joined the BSG on this occasion. The

[Goanet] St. Britto's HS Passing Out Parade

On 18 February, 2006, students of St.Britto High School, Mapusa, staged an
impressive "Passing Out Parade" worthy of a Military School and having
cultural items never seen in the Military Schools. It was a sight to see and
sounds to capture for an eternity.

The SSC students in "civvies" [black trousers, white shirts and black ties]
walked down the steps from the Assembly Hall to the football-cum-parade
ground. A hundred and thirty four well turned out boys fit to be "Gentlemen
Cadets", with the foreguards carrying the two numbers 2006 and 60, trooped
down to a thunderous applause. The fact that there are 134 students in SSC
in the 60th year of the school is no mean achievement when birth rates are
already on the decline in Goa.

The Head boy or Chief Minister of the School, Omar Nunes from Guirim,
unfurled the school flag. He
was at hand when the 'Principal' or Head Master, Fr.Apollo Cardoz s.j., lit
the torch that was then presented to each "house" the Red, Blue, Green and
Gold house one by one to represent the passing of knowledge to all the four
houses of students in the school. The outgoing 'house commanders' then
presented the 'house standards' to the newly elected house commanders fron
Standard IX. The school flag then was transferred by Omar Nunes to the
CM-elect Sudesh Pillai. From then on the SSC students were the guests of the
display.

The house-wise troops in their mass PT uniforms of black shorts and house
colour shirts marched smartly and in unision behind the new house commanders
in Navy white trousers and shirts with the shoulder bars and all. The grey
shorts and sky blue shirts of the school uniform were conspicuous by their
absence. Times have changed, so have the colours. The only consolation was
that the 'right markers' of each house had grey trousers. The turn out was
smart.

The Brittoites band played the music for the march past, the school and
national anthem and for the cultural fiesta.

The primary section presented a cross between Hawaii and Maldives in a
tribal dance. Large jack leaves for the men and  hoola skirts of coconut
leaves and red cloth bikini tops for the "girls". In true Polynesian style,
the 'girls' carried on dancing with gay abandon even then their bikini
tops slid down their topless chests. ;-)) I did hear a few gasps and see
jaws drop among some in the audience. Well, boys will be boys!

Zee-Bras move over, the middle school students did better as cheer leaders
than the Mumbai girls at the football finals earlier this year.

"Iss duniya mein do tarah ke log hote hain. Ek tarah ke log sari zindagi
mein ek hi kaam karte hain. Dusre tarah ke log ek hi zindagi mein sareh kaam
karte hain" goes the dialogue of the Big B Amitabh Bacchan in Abhishek
Bacchan -Rani Mukherji box office hit movie "Bunty and Bubbly". The hit song
"Dhaddak, dhaddak"
was picturised and presented by the boys to their seniors, perhaps as an
inspiration. We have just one life...and many things to do in it.

Pawan means wind. Physical Eduction teacher, Pawan Kumar, has been a breath
of fresh air in the St.Britto High School. If proof was wanted, he showed it
off like the Pharoahs of Egypt...with live "Pyramids". I have studied for
nine years in Brittos and have taken my sons to that school for the last
dozen years. Never have I seen such intricate and well executed pyradid in
any school. The older boys were even trained to act as 'hydraulic lifts' for
the younger ones whom they carried on their shoulders and delivered directly
to the third floor of the 'pyramid'. The best part was that the entire
exercise was conducted by a student. The grand master, Pawan, had melted
into the crowd of spectators. Fantastic delegation of responsibility and
capacity building in the students. This is literally learnin-by-doing...and
doing it well the first time and everytime!

After the inspiring address by the Principal calling upon the students to
live up to the school mooto "Deeds, not Words" [Facta non Verba] and to
serve God and Country, the National Anthem was sung. Then, it was a solemn
and dignified march by the SSC batch of 2006 out of the school gate.

It is nice that the school organises this passing out parade, a fitting
finale to a dozen years in the school. Most of us on this list were not
among the fortunate ones to have a passing out parade. Some made do with a
'farewell party', some others may have not had even that. An event like this
is bound to strengthen the emotional ties to the institution. Something that
can help create a Old Boys Association once again.

provided the venue. Volunteer teams from Carmel HSS and Govt.
College,Khandola.

of Panaji as the festival partner .   Individual and Institutional  members
participated. L.D.Samant school, Porvorim put up a display of over a hundred
posters on medicinal plants. Ayurveda College displayed and sold medicinal
plants. Competitions for school and college students on garbage management
and medicinal plants evoked good response. Forest Deptment participated.

8 and 15 January, 2006  All Goa Home Garden Competion held. Judged by a team
of experts from BSG led by IPP Dr.H.Y.Karapurkar [former Director of
Agriculture and CMD of Horticulture Corporation] and comprising of
Mr.Rozendo Mendonsa, Mr.Rodney Almeida, Mr. Prakash Pednekar [all three
nurserymen], and Rena Fernandes [Agiculture officer]. Prizes will be awarded
on 19 February, 2006.

Home garden competition

The winners of the All Goa Home Garden competition organised by the
Botanical Society of Goa in January, 2006, are as follows: 1)Fully Amateur
category: the first prize goes to Mr Nicholas Sequeira, Saligao, the second
prize to Mr John Hicks, Camurlim-Bardez, and the third prize Mrs. Lira
Rodrigues, Davorlim and special prizes to Ms Aurita De Souza, Merces and Ms
Fiel Braganza, Betim; 2) Professionally designed category: the first prize
goes to Ms Geeta Kamat, Chicalim, second to Dr Carmo Gracias, Margao, and
third prize to Mr Ashok Dande, Nagali-Taleigao.

The prizes will be given at the General Body Meeting of the BSG on Sunday,

Produced by Goans in Goa, the Portuguese language “Contacto Goa” is  a
unique thirteen part TV serial that follows the fascinating trail of the
Portuguese language in India, a legacy that continues to survive even today,
more than forty years after the end of the colonial rule in India.
The series, which is mostly in the Portuguese language, can be watched  on
the RTP International (RTPi) channel available on select Indian cable
networks, with an estimated viewership of twenty-four million people across
the world .
The series will features intriguing stories of people, institutions and
events that continue to sustain the centuries old cultural ties between the
two nations. Though the focus of the series would of course be Goa and
Goans, it will also travel to other territories which have had a Portuguese
presence, such as Daman, Diu, and Kerala.
Each episode of Contacto Goa is of approximately twenty-five minutes
duration and features three or four individual stories, covering subjects
like art, music, food, cultural events etc.
The first episode was broadcast  on RTP International channel on Sunday,
January 29, 2006 at 8:15pm IST and again on Monday, January 30, 2006,
10:00am IST. It featured the popular Goan fadista Sonia Shirsat, daughter of
Dr. Shashi Shirsat of Ponda and Alice Pinho of Panaji. She also sings for
Status-4 . The Monteiro family [ Fr.Chico and Dr.Gustavo Monteiro group of
families.] of Candolim rendered their unique music to the first episode.

The program will be part of the “Contacto” programming from RTPi (e.g. USA
Contacto, Canada Contacto, etc.) that have already been running on RTPi for
a few years, and features stories about (and by) Portuguese immigrant
communities around the world.
The uniqueness of “Contacto Goa” series is that, unlike the other “Contacto”
programs, “Contacto Goa” will mainly feature Goans (Indians) and Portuguese
visitors to Goa (India), rather than Portuguese immigrants to Goa, of whom
there are not many anyway.
The series is produced by Ultra Film and Video (UfaV),  represented by a
creative team based both in Mumbai and Goa, consisting of Christopher Rego,
Desmond Nazareth and Nalini Elvino de Sousa.
Much time and effort has gone into the research and shooting of the series,
to provide viewers across the globe with a privileged glimpse into a world
that still retains memories of a bygone, largely forgotten colonial era in
the regions concerned.

launch of the Matching Grant Project 58106 with Rotary Club of
Solvesberg-Sweden R.I.District 2400 for 242 Intra Ocular Lens (IOL)
transplants, commonly known as "cataract operations".  Dr.Digambar Naik,
took the guests , the President Rtn. Lucindo Faria, the IPP Rtn. Viraj
Paraz, Secretary Rtn. Miguel Braganza and Contact Person for MG#58106 Rtn.
Dilip Salgaocar on a round of the facilities and for interaction with the
beneficiary-patients in the Pre-operation ward at the Vrundavan Hospital &
Research Centre [VHRC], Mhapsa-Goa. The operations are being performed by
Dr. Prasanna Parulekar.  The process and interviews have been recorded and
will be telecast at 7.30 p.m. on Cable News channel GOA NEWS on 25 January,
2006.

  MG Project 58106 with RC Solvesberg-Sweden R.I.District 2400 is for 242
IOL Transplants.  The project  cost is shared by The Rotary Foundation[ or
TRF that has funded the successfull "Polio Plus" campaign internationally]
contributing half the cost while the two Rotary Districts[ 3170-India and
2400-Sweden] and the two clubs [ Mapuca and Solvesborg] contribute the other
half.  The accounts are audited annually by independent Chartered
Accountants.

Any person who is afflicted by eye cataract and does not have the financial
resources to pay for the  corrective operation and lens transplant may
contact the Rotary Club of Mapuca[9822104689], Vrundavan Hospital-Peddem[
2250022], or the Contact persons [ Phones 2257697, 2262966, 2253762].
Operations are carried out for persons of all age groups from one year olds
to  91 year olds, gender and residence provided they have no financial
ability. Preference is given to residents of Goa. The operation from
admission to discharge is absolutely free, including food and stay for
pre-operation and post operation period. Pre-admission treatment, if needed,
may be charged by the hospital.

 All the patients of the first batch of nineteen beneficiaries will be
discharged from Vrundavan Hospital at 10.00 A.M. on 25 January, 2006  after
a simple function to celebrate their joy of having their vision restored.
Thanks to this multi-lateral initiative of Rotary International, it s member
clubs and The Rotary Foundation, the good news to the poor is that they can
see once again.The Rotary Club of Mapuca also has a programme in
collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kolhapur to provide free "Jaipur Foot"
prosthesis to those who have lost one or both of their feet.

To my mind, the points listed below:

 8. All India Konkani **Parishad is NOT a Registered Society.  Hence it 
has no legal status and right  to ask for, or to receive Govt. GRANTS, 
subsidy and funds.

 9. On 23 January 1978 an institution called All India Konkani *Sahitya*
 Parishad was registered as a Society in Goa.  Its Registration number was
 6/78.  However, this Society never renewed its registration not even once.
 To renew the registration of a Society AUDITED ACCOUNTS and Secretary's
 Report must be submitted annually to the Registrar and Head of Notary
 Services.  Since All India Konkani SAHITYA Parishad never renewed its
 registration, we presume that it never submitted the audited accounts to
 the Registrar and Head of Notary Services.  Hence All India Konkani  Parishad
 ceased to exist.  It is truly an unrepresentative body which has no legal
 existence and whose functioning is opposed to all democratic norms.

Dear Netgaokars,

Today was the day that Goans voted to decide whether Goa should remain 
separate or merge with Maharashtra. Thank God for the Shashtikars who voted 
overwhelmingly for a separate identity. If the choice was left to the rest of 
Goa we would have been a miniscule part of Sindhudurg or a separate district 
in Maharashtra. The constituency-wise [28 in Goa of 1967]statistics will soon 
be out in the open once again soon.

Today, the MARG of Gurunath Kelekar organised a small photo exhibition in what 
used to be the Art Gallery of the Instituto Menezes Braganza [ raped by the 
Goa Dept. of Art and Culture in the recent past]. Dr. Wilfred de Souza , 
Deputy Chief Minister[ and wannabe Chief Minister] was the Chief Guest. No 
where else for the MCP from NCP to go. It is a pity. He once belonged to the 
same party as the Father of the Opinion Poll, Dr.Jack Sequeira's United Goans 
Party.

Sandesh Prabhudesai, editor of Sunaparant, reminded the Dy.CM. that the 
politicians in Goa today owed their very existence to the Opinion Poll. 40 of 
them would have otherwise been replaced by one MLA in the Maharashtra Vidhan 
Sabha. Yet, the Government of the day finds no time to celebrate the Opinion 
Poll day. Perhaps it can make amends by 19 Januarythe day when the results 
of the historic Opinion Poll were declared. Goa had voted to remain separate. 
Once again, thank God for the simple people of Salcete. they ensured a 
separate identity. they fought for Konkani to be recognised as the state 
language. If they have been cheated by inserting a definition to define the 
script by another smart Shashtikar, they can still change that. It is not easy 
to merge Goa into another state any more.

There was a meeting at the Archbishop's palace at Altinho-Panaji on Monday
the 09 January, 2006, to discuss the pattern of robberies in Goa's churches
and to explore way of stopping this loot. Fr. Maverick Fernandes, Director
of the [Diocesan]Council for Social Justice and Peace chaired the meeting on
behalf of the Archbishop. He informed the persons present that, what had
looked like random robberies, was falling into an organised pattern of
thefts of art objects. There were 12 successful robberies between February
and December, 2005. The matter has been discussed with the DGP and the DIG
of Police, Panaji.

One of the participants in the interaction had an interesting story to tell.
The St. Anne [or Santa Anna, the mother of Mary] chapel in Marra-Pilerne was
broken in . It was on the night of 16/17 October, 2005. A FIR was lodged on
17 October, 2005, as soon as the theft was discovered.

The 'Description' filed by the complainant includes 1. A life-size statue of
St.Anne with her grandson, baby Jesus. The statue was donated by
Mumbai-based Goans and is estimated at Rs.1.75 lakhs. There was a priceless,
200 year-old statue of St.Anne which was conservatively valued at Rs.8
lakhs. Six statues of half metre heights were taken from the side altars.
Among the other items was a charity box with cash inside.  The' Description'
is signed by the Complainant but not the Police.

So far, so good. Now comes the interesting part.

According to the "Report " written in Marathi by Head Constable/Hawaldar
K.S. Ghogate [HC 3395] has a disclaimer " Although the report is written in
Marathi it has been explained to me in Konkani and it is true and correctly
recorded as told by me." The inventory in the Report includes "two wooden
statues of St. Ann, three old wooden crosses" a list of other "old wooden
statues" and a donation box [fund-petti] with /Rs.10,000/-. The 'Report' is
signed by the HC 3395 but not the Complainant.

The First Information Report [Under Section 154 of the Criminal Procedure
Code] is listed as FIR No.79/05 dated 17/10/05 at Police Station No.183
[Porvorim] District 05 and the complaint is under Sections 454,457 and 380
of IPC [Indian Penal Code] against "unknown accused persons". The General
Diary Reference Entry No. is 34/05 and the place of occurrence is Beat IX, 5
km. from the Police Station.[ In the case of St.Joseph's Chapel,
Ansabhatt-Mhapsa, it is right next door to the Mhapsa Police Station. Yet it
was robbed.]

Surprisingly, the whole picture changes here. Under item 10" Total Value of
Property stolen" the entry in the FIR reads " Rs.10,000/- and some wooden
statues" as if describing some toys or curious of no inconsequence. That the
"old wooden statues" are invaluable NOT value-less does not seem to have
dawn on the police. The Porvorim Police Station Officer in Charge on that
day was P.I.Serafin Dias. The FIR itself is unsigned by BOTH, the Police
Inspector and the Complainant.

It is not funny. The place of occurence of the crime is listed as" St. Ant
chappel, Marra, Pillerna Berdez" in Roman Script and English by the same
Policeman who recorded the Report in Marathi. His signature is in legible
English and he is obviously educated in English medium school. So why is the
report in Marathi?

When the Complainant has given the list of stolen items in English, when the
FIR form is written in English, when the copies of the Report are endorsed
in English, when the signature of the HC is in English, why is the body text
of the report in Marathi? What happens to the value of the statues? Why St.
Ant?? Are other insects being canonised , too??

Above all, what is the progress in the case?

go into a time wrap. In "liberated" Goa with a democratically elected
Government, Poriem returns a Kashe everytime, irrespective of which "party"
[ the word has a myraid of connotations these days] he belongs. Like sin,
the more one tries to avoid it, the more one does it. The bourgeois system
continues to this day. That was the story of Saleli village till the son of
a kashe was lynched on the day the Catholics world over celebrate the feast
of the "Holy Innocents" ..28 December. The breaking news of 03 January, 2006
is datelined 03 December, a day on which the events at Saleli had not
occurred ...in any year so far!

I have had the privilege of knowing Krishnarao Rane personally. He has been
a freedom fighter unlike the pseudos that parade on 19 December near Azad
maidan. He has been a pragmatic Sarpanch, getting the administration to set
up educational institutions, milk collection centres and even an organised
fruit orchard for the Honda Panchayat. He is a man of word. It is a pity
that he had to suffer the misfortune of having a son die of unnatural causes
during his own lifetime. I do not know the son, but I can understand the
anguish of the father. I can also understand the anguish of the dispossessed
people of Saleli. The fiefdoms should have been abolished in 1962 or soon
thereafter. ONLY THE ENACTMENT OF A LAND CEILING ACT and its implementation
can be the starting point of reform for the dispossessed. There is no other
way, except through bloodshed. The struggle has reached the brink.

Krishnarao Rane is a "Kashe" of Sattari, Freedom fighter against the
colonial rule, former Sarpanch of Honda, election agent of Pratapsingh Raoji
Rane for Poriem constituency and  Customs detainee in the smuggling case. He
became the  opponent of Pratapsingh Rane [1994? assembly elections] and this
may have political fallout.

Trouble has been brewing for some time in the Village Panchayat of Honda.
The stone crushers and the mining for the basalt in the hills around Guleli,
Saleli and Morlem have destroyed cashew plantations on which depends the
livelihood of the locals---nut collection and sale, feni distillation and
employment in cashewnut shelling units. For the benefit of a few, the
prosperity of many was compromised. Not that anyone should condone violence,
but this was in the coming.

Those who live by the VCD seem to be destined to die by the VCD.
 The BJP, which prided itself for producing the dubious 'Goa Freedom
Struggle' in VCD form for the forced viewing by school-going children same
time last year, is now a study in human behaviour while trying to prevent
adult Indians from viewing the "liberated" behaviour of one of its
true-saffron General Secretary specially deputed from the RSS and now facing
"Total Recall" from Nagpur.[Reported by almost all Indian news channels on
27 Dec. and newspapers on 28 Dec, 2005]
 It seems that the pseudo-patriotic party has realised too late that Rubbers
cannot erase all types of evidence. Therein lies the rub...whether they will
do it again or not ;-))

childhood friend and neighbour, Deepa, will be on Doodarshan's Sahayadri
channel on Christmas Day at 9 P.M., Boxing Day at 3 P.M. and on the eve of

Dear Senhor Bernado,

The GOENCHO ULO is a Konkani periodical in the Roman script for the
promotion of the usage of the Konkani language worldwide. The promoters of
GOENCHO ULO [ and I am proud to be one of them] honestly believe that Amchi
Bhas Konkani has the best chances of growth and popularisation of its use
through the Roman script, specially because this script is known world wide
and is adept for Net usage.

The fact that the GOENCHO ULO has figured in the Goanet, GoaWorld, Goacom
and Fullerlife websites, files, mail lists and archives is proof enough of
its international demand. The hard copies, in the simple to read and
understand Konkani, are in great demand in Goa. We had sent a few copies to
Kuwait, Mumbai and Mangalore. There is a demand for regular supply. Finance
and marketing of advertisement space is our limitation at present. Many
hands make light work. The support base is increasing with every issue.
Perhaps, we can one day reach the 45,000 copies a week level of Mylapore
Times, a free sheeter based in Chennai [formerly Madras City.]. It all
depends on the stregth of our love for Konkani.

We  at GOENCHO ULO are for Konkani, we are not against Devanagri script. At
present the Goa University's Konkani Encyclopaedia [Mahakosh] is in
Devanagri. I have quite a few entries on things agricultural in the four
volumes thereof. Many neo-votaries of Devanagri [Fr. Moreno de Souza,sj, and
diocesan clergy like Fr.Jaime Couto, Fr. Mousinho de Ataide, et al]  do not
figure in the Mhakash at all.  ;-(

The Official Language Act,1987 of Goa, Daman & Diu recognises "Konkani in
devanagri script" as the sole official language. It bothers me not. The
future of any language is not in devanagri. The GOENCHO ULO is not in
devanagri or it wouild not be on so many netgroups and websites. The
GOENCHO ULO has nothing "Official " about it. It is a periodical in our
mother tongue, in a dialect we understand in contemporary Goa. No one is
forced to read it. The choice is of the reader. The readers world wide are
making an informed choice. The choice is clear. It has clearly rattled a few
who OPPOSE Roman script to maintain their hegemony. They should learn from
Sanskrit experience. It is getting revived by aloowing students to answer
the questions in any language of their choice. It is a marks "scoring"
subject at the "plus 2" level of school, the pre-university course [PUC].

We are proud of Jayanti Naik for obtaining the first Ph.D in Konkani from
Goa University. It is the first flush in 20 years of the University that has
seen 17 convocations without a Ph.D. in Konkani, notwithstanding the fact
that Dr.Olivinho Gomes headed the Konkani Dept. for most of this period. The
first Ph.D came after his retirement from the Goa University. That is the
truth.
Just the minor detail that the Ph.D thesis is written in Devanagri does not
change it one whit for us. It can be transliterated into Roman script in no
time at all.We have  been transliterating the rubbish that Subhash Velingkar
wrote  about the Fontainhas Festival of Art and his vandal creation,
Rajendra, in the SUNAPARANT. We have even transliterated the grandiose
dreams of Adv. Uday Bhembre in his roadmap to nowhere. Transliteration of
the Ph.D. thesis would be a pleasure. We hope to give that privilege to the
researcher herself. It will reach a greater audience, worldwide when she
does it.

There will be a new "channel" [basically a CD capsule producing agency] that
will [illegally] telecast from one of the channels of the local head-end
cable TV distributor. Goa TV will join the ranks of Goa 365, Goa Newsline,
In Goa , Goan Eye, Goa Plus and other wannabe local channels from 26
January, 2006.
