Thank you Oscar. Goans must boot-strap themselves to success. Focus, hard-work,
and staying positive will make a real difference in the long-run.

Economic and Political Weekly, EPW [http://www.epw.in], is a magazine
that's usually thought-provoking, and I recently renewed my
subscription to it (Rs 3200 for individuals for three years). In the
July 12, 2008 issue, there's an interesting article of relevance to
Goa, titled 'One for the (Cyber) Road. It's by that iconoclast who
writes under the initials of GPD, and says: The Marathi Sahitya
Sammelans have been th evictim of the crass vulgarity that
characterises our literary culture.

The Konkani sammelans -- of various shapes and forms -- have also been
patterned on their larger, Marathi counterparts. So it's anyone's
guess how relevant this debate is to us here in Goa.

GPD writes: During colonial times, there was a justified feeling that
all cultural and social activity of people must have a collective
aspect. Cultural professionals should meet once a year at least and
exchange views and experience. It was justice Ranade who started it
all towards the end of the 19th century. The idea was that one of the
senior cultural activists, in this case, a Marathi author, would be
selected to give a lead to the discussions. Being so elected acquired
before long a status of (a) Nobel. Or nearly so! Year after year the
celebratory nature of the collective increased and now the process of
election has acquired a status akin to that of the election to the
chairmanship of a sugar cooperative.

He adds: It is a part of the Indian psyche that we seem to be
reluctant to see that literature si basically to be privately enjoyed.
I think our poetry readings are responsible for it. In none of the
advanced societies the phenomenon of a score of poets and 50 odd poems
being applauded in one evening ever takes place The Marathi
Sahitya Sammelans have been a victim of this crassness. And yet,
ordinary people throng these celebrations with great enthusiasm. They
buy books worth several lakhs of rupees. They venerate their idols and
icons

[Goanet] Fw: Lourdes Miracles

2008-08-10 Thread Fr. Ivo C da Souza

From: Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED]
As you can see, the procedure described below is clearly not a scientific
procedure of any kind.
***I am giving here the report of the Eucharistic miracle. We believe in the
real presence of the Risen Lord in the Eucharist under the species of bread
and wine. Christian faith is not based on miracles. The miracle confirms it.
What would be Dr.Santosh's scientific procedure? For my neuroscience this
can never happen!... This is laughable! Let us humbly accept the reality.
We know how much we do not know!

Fr.Ivo

The Eucharistic Miracles

The first Eucharistic miracle took place in the Naju Parish Church on 5th
June 1988 during Mass when Julia Kim received Holy Communion and the Sacred
Host turned into flesh and blood in her mouth. Since then, she has
experienced this miracle on many occasions, both in Naju and abroad. It has
been witnessed by many people, including priests, the Pope's representatives
and even the Holy Father himself when Julia visited the Vatican in October
1995. During a private Mass celebrated by the Holy Father, Julia received
Holy Communion and the Eucharistic miracle occurred again, for the twelfth
time. The Sacred Host turned to flesh and blood on Julia's tongue. The
newsletter, Mary's Touch, reported, Immediately after the Mass, the Holy
Father, came to Julia and witnessed this miracle. His Holiness blessed Julia
and her companions. On 17th September 1996, a Eucharistic miracle took
place in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Sibu, Sarawak (Malaysia), when Julia
Kim, together with about 3,000 people, were present for Mass concelebrated
by Bishop Dominic Su, Mgr William Bos, Fr Tom Connors, Fr Francis Su, Fr
Jacob Ong and Fr Paul Chee. During the homily, Bishop Su emphasised the Real
Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and the healing power of the Eucharistic
Lord. When Julia Kim received Holy Communion a short while later, the Sacred
Host on her tongue turned into flesh and blood in the shape of a heart. Many
people witnessed this miracle and, as on previous occasions, photographs
were taken. A few minutes later, Julia consumed the flesh. In his testimony,
Bishop Su said,Our Lord performed this miracle in order to confirm our
faith in his Real Presence in the Eucharist. To him be the glory and praise
for ever and ever!

Other miraculous signs that have occurred in Naju include a vision in July
1995 during a service to celebrate the anniversary of the first time Our
Lady's statue shed tears. Julia saw the wooden figure of Jesus on the cross
turn to flesh and bleed at seven places on his body. The seven wounds then
turned into white round hosts which floated down to rest on the altar before
Our Lady's statue. When Julia consumed one of the sacred Hosts later, it
turned into flesh and blood. The two priests celebrating Mass, dipped their
fingers in the blood, showed this to the people and wiped their fingers on a
piece of white cloth, which is preserved in the chapel at Naju. All these
signs and wonders have touched many people and a committee has been formed
to investigate and examine the evidence. The Church in Naju hopes that the
revelations there will be officially approved by the Pope, and the Church
and the whole world will be renewed by the mercy of God through our Blessed
Mother.

From the Nunciature

The Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Korea, Most Rev Giovanni Bulaitis, wrote to
Bishop Dominic Su, It has come to my knowledge, the wonderful manifestation
of the Holy Eucharist which took place in your presence last September.

This Nunciature is gathering material relating to events involving Julia and
I should be most grateful if you could share with me the experience with a

Bishop's report

In response to this letter, Bishop Dominic Su wrote, Thank you for your

I was caught totally unprepared when this extraordinary Eucharistic
phenomenon occurred in our Sacred Heart Cathedral, Sibu on 17th September,
1996 during our Eucharistic celebration from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.

When I think over it now, I can see that it was good for me to be caught
unprepared. Had I expected before hand that this mysterious incident would
happen, I would have got a pyx ready to get this flesh and blood from
the mouth of Mrs. Julia Kim for laboratory analysis. This would show that my
faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist would have to depend on
scientific proof. What Jesus wants from us is our child-like faith in Him
and not an intellectual type of faith based on science and reasonings. That
is why some Catholics, including a few priests, no longer believe in the
real presence of

Re: [Goanet] Fw: Lourdes Miracles

2008-08-10 Thread Santosh Helekar
As you can see from the post quoted below, contrary to earlier claims not even
a bureaucratic committee meeting was called to certify these incredible
miracles, let alone follow any kind of genuine scientific procedure. The
supernatural claims made by an individual and her priests were accepted without
any independent verification by unbiased expert observers or by any kind of
actual tests to ascertain whether real flesh and blood had materialized. Nobody
bothered to investigate whether they were human flesh and blood. No samples of
the flesh and blood were preserved for a subsequent thorough scientific
examination to rule out the very likely possibility of pious fraud, and to
establish the validity of not just the immediate extraordinary claims, but
indeed the tenability of the entire belief system surrounding them.

A real scientific procedure would demand one to find out if the tissue and
blood in question matches that of anybody connected with this event, primarily
Julia Kim. Scientists would want to know if both X and Y chromosomes were
present in the cells from the flesh and in the white blood cells, because of
the claim of virgin birth. They would ask that nuclear and mitochondrial DNA be
sequenced, so Korean ancestry could be ruled in or out, and the correct
geneology be determined.

The level of gullibility displayed in the quoted post indicates that the people
involved in propagating such miracles do not want their claims to be
subjected to real scientific tests, and face the prospect of disillusionment.

Cheers,

Santosh

The Goan Soul (The Soul of Goans)
-- Jose Salvador Fernandes

As and when the need arose, I made trips -- two or three, to Mumbai
and returned. While travelling to Mumbai by bus, on every trip, I --
my inner being experienced something. The bus having left Margao for
Mumbai, after crossing downwards across the undulating Goan boundary,
towards the heights -- to enter Maharashtra; at that point this thought
swirls in the mind, making it apparent that one has entered into an
unfamiliar territory. Later this sense of ennui clings to ones being
as though having turned into my shadow, while repeatedly speaking of
the unfamiliar. You are in peculiar surroundings. In these surrounds
there is no one who may be related to your mother -- someone
familiar. In this unfamiliar environment – you will pass your days and
times; what you will not -- is spend them by opening ones mind and heart
to all. Often times, the day is spent under the pressure of a feeling
of emptiness. I get -- the feeling that I am surrounded by someone on
my maternal side. Having to bear this sensation (of feeling an emptiness)
during the journey (at length) and on account of attempting to gain
release by kicking it into a corner, I purposely tune my attention,
mind and ear to those in the bus speaking in our language.

In the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries and in earlier times; if one sits
down to read the pages of Konknni history through the lenses of
reflection; in those times what position was accorded to Konknni,
how did it develop, and in its development -- a result of various
formulations realizing a rich literary trove while continually flourishing;
this is indeed apparent. During that period, the Konknni language
evolved considerably. It attained adulthood. Matured. As this
continued, Goa became the main center for Konknni (Konknni sank
its roots in Goa). But as we see it, the foundational base of this
original language, we could say, has begun crumbling little by little.

There was a time, when saying Goan meant a Konknni being. But today's
Goan, let alone the aspect of the Konknni being aside, has become,
everything else but. The Goan Hindu these days upon being addressed as
a Konknni, makes a wry face, a rotten one. If one speaks about Konknni
to or in front of the Hindus of today, their faces reflect lines of
consternation. The large mass of common Goans have absolutely no
interest in their language. Upon observation, lets keep aside the fact
that it is being played with in various ways. What is shameful is
that he is ashamed to speak his own language, engendering feelings of
belittlement. To save his language today --- via subscribing to
Konknni papers, magazines, by purchasing and reading them, ensuring
they continue to survive by helping in whatever way one can;
although this ability exists in body, mind as well as in ones pocket --
one remains an invalid. Despite comprehending that one is connected to
ones language, he has become estranged from it.

Do we have the unity, that Goa and Konknni -- that they, may never by
anyone, undergo being pillaged or ripped apart. When one says Goa, it
is synonymous with the Konknni being. Within this Konknni Language is
embodied the Goan spirit. It is his soul. It is knowledge / awareness
It is identity. But the Konknni masses in the Goa that is today, are a
stain on this rich heritage. They are continuing to neglect the
relationship between Goa and Konknni. It is for those reasons, that
the Goan of today in manners of his speech, lifestyle, dressing is left
wanting. If every Goan was as a matter of course to connect Goa
and Konknni in their diverse walks of life, in this way the Konknni
earth will keep thriving. And if this were to happen, as time slowly
passes by, another civilization will be saved from extinction.

Konkanim is the mother tongue (avoi / maim bhas -- Sanskrit:
mAtRu-bhAShA, Latin: mater lingua) of every Goan. This Konknni is the
soul of every Goan. In this Konknni language, is resident the Goan
identity. Not merely that, but morever that the Konknni language be
the backbone of each and every Goan. Our backbone hereafter should not
bend in the least bit. Our soul does not deserve to be beaten and cast
aside. Not just in centuries to come, but even in the distant future,
our backbone must be held upright, to render towards Konknni, a true
service-vocation; in keeping alive the soul of our civilization -- do
we have what it takes, within ourselves.

Goanet Digest, Vol 3, Issue 992
Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2008 13:09:56 -0700 (PDT)
Subject: Re: [Goanet] The Momentous Goan Convention

We have been subjected to various posts on the Goan Convention in Toronto which
are long on words and criticism and short on action!
1. The criticism of the convention - which many of them did not attend at all -
after the fact is all well and good: what was needed was our active
participation and support before the event. Why report that the attendance was
low, when one didn’t do anything oneself to bring people to the convention, and
omit the many other positive outcomes of this Convention? How about fewer words
and more action?
2. The low attendance at the workshops was due to the fact that they were held
mid-week and during the day when most Goans in the Toronto area had to go to
work. Secondly, Goans are unable or unwilling to pay $250 registration fee.
These 2 factors should be taken into account by future organizers.
3. Another repeated theme was: Why was it called “International Goan
Convention?” Easy. Goans are international, we live on many continents and in
many countries. Obviously, the organizers were appealing to the international
Goan audience out there that participates in Goanet, not just to Goans in Goa.
The other reason for calling it “international” was that the organizers chose
an outstanding international theme: Networking and Identity. These are
activities that we international Goans are interested in.
Would these armchair critics be happier if the next Convention is called the
“Non-International Goan Convention” or some such equally ridiculous name?
4. Then there’s the ridiculous stream of comments on why was the convention
held in Toronto, not in Goa etc. Another easy answer. For the same reason that
the Olympics are held in different cities around the world and not just in
Greece where they were started. They are held wherever there are hosts willing
to take the trouble to organize them in their country. There were hosts
willing to organize this Convention in Toronto, hence it was held there. If
there are hosts willing to host it in Sweden, go ahead, have it in Sweden.
5. For the naysayers who have been asking obviously skeptical questions about
what were the outcomes for Goa, let me ask if these critics have suggestions of
outcomes for Goa? We’d be happy to take action.
Seems to me that we should be thankful that even a handful of Goans are willing
to meet and talk about issues to do with Goa and assume that they have the
goodwill to help in their own way. Let those who went to hear the issues and
get suggestions from the likes of Dean D’Cruz, Alexyz, and Wendell go their own
sincere way instead of making them feel that they were wasting their time!
This line of criticism is not exactly encouragement for Goans who care and want
to get involved in Goa’s issues.
6. Several comments are critical of the fact that this was partly sponsored by
the office of the NRI Commissioner out of the Goan taxpayer’s pocket. From what
I gather, this office has funds to liaison with the overseas Goan community.
Many overseas Goans have property concerns in Goa. Over 200 Goans in Toronto
had a chance to meet Mr. Faleiro and question him. In turn, he had a chance to
tell them to invest in Goa and that the Goa government offers matching funds
for a village project that we overseas Goans might like to sponsor. Seems to me
that these critical and never-satisfied Goans are either complaining that the
Goa government isn’t doing enough for Goans or, in this case, doing too much!

[Goanet] A million mutinies now

2008-08-10 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
A million mutinies now
10 Aug 2008, 0250 hrs IST, Joeanna Rebello,TNN

Don't call us susegaad, the elderly gent fired, his loose dental
artillery nearly ejected by the force of his consternation. That's what
they've always called us Goans. No doubt we love our laidback life, but
while we were sleeping our government stole our land and sold it to the
highest bidder. No...susegaad is what we used to be.

The newspapers Hillary Gonsalves nowadays keeps company, nourish his
invective against the detrition of Goa's land and life. But more
significant than stale complaints against evil-eyed politicos,
narrow-eyed builders and cross-eyed sarpanchs is the rising litany of
local rebellions. Goans have sat up from their siesta and found half
their land under the pylons of housing complexes or hotels-leeching
villages of their water and electricity, disgorging sewage into the
soil, piling up hills of garbage and causing fish to fly. With their
patience fast evaporating, locals have finally collected to chorus their
rights, and via that anthem, reclaim their land.

The plinths of village panchayats are crowded with villagers who've put
the sarpanch squarely in the crosshairs, questioning the grounds on
which mega-housing has been blessed, forcing the retraction of NOCs from
the town and country planning department and asking their MLAs some
uncomfortable questions. As newspaper headlines flash every other day,
they've won some substantial victories. Resolutions passed at gram
sabhas insist that villagers be briefed about local developments-be it
the erection of a residential complex, or the intended usurpation of
community land by the government on the false promise of mounting public
facilities. Goa has seen one too many land conversions, and the Goans
have cottoned on to the chicanery.

You can say the chickens have finally come home to roost, says Dr
Oscar Rebello, ex-convener of the Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA), a volunteer
body credited with needling the locals out of their slumber at the time
the Regional Plan 2011 (master plan for the state) emerged in 2006.
After years of rampant corruption and disastrous governance, the
cumulative outrage has now found expression. Though it is an agitation
that has yet to be channelled in the right direction.

What it is now is largely a reflexive routing of the enemy in the front
yard, but corps like the GBA, Council for Social Justice and Peace
(CSJP) and Goa Heritage Action Group are eyeing the long road ahead and
cobbling a hard strategy to counter the pan-Goa siege. Lionel Messias,
an itinerant journalist who has dropped anchor on the island of Divar,
is of the opinion that Goans didn't see the landslide coming. The first
state-level protests rallied around Regional Plan 2011 and the SEZs.
Localised campaigns have taken root only in the last seven or eight
months, he says.

Large-scale construction started in the 1990s but accelerated in the
last decade. As long as all this took place on tourist coordinates and
in towns, people kept quiet. But when builders started moving into
villages with their scant infrastructure, matters went on the boil. The
famous springs of Kesarval forfeited their water to the wells bored by
industrial estates in the area. And in Calangute, groundwater got
contaminated because septic tanks were lodged in close proximity,
offers Fr Maverick Fernandes of CSJP, a Church-backed body that has been
mobilising people to assert their rights. Recently we went to the
Quepem and Sangeum talukas, where we educated people about the damage to
their livelihoods from mining in the hills. Mining lords buy the local
vote at public hearings, but we are making the villagers aware of the
long-term damage to their forests, agricultural and riverine
occupations. Very soon the source of the Kushavati river will dry up at
this rate.

While organisations like the Council have been the spine of many
rallies, one village set the precedent for self-motivation. It was the
small village of Carmona in South Goa that pulled off a coup against one
of Mumbai's most powerful builders. In March this year, the builder
buckled under the communal weight of the 4,500-strong village, which
demanded, through a signature campaign, that the sarpanch repeal the
approval to build 618 flats and 71 bungalows with indoor pools, in one
of those spit-polished complexes. They were going to make a town of the
village and treble its population in one sweep, even though resources
were grossly disproportionate. Advocates of this pro-urban change cite
Bombay as an example, says Serafino Cota, proponent of the people's
campaign. They say, 'Don't you want Goa to become multi-cultural like
Bombay?' We say, Bombay is a city (one that is done for, anyway), and
these are villages and they can't be compared.

Some critics perceive the movement as arising from xenophobia. This
shrill rhetoric of Goans versus non-Goans is out to put a jingoistic
slant on the issue, says Dr Rebello. But this isn't about

Reduplicative: Cathrina-Fodtrina, Moderator-Fodretor etc

Ref. ongoing topic on goanet.

Well, really speaking, the above are not the right way we used in our daily
language ‘Konkani’.

The right way would be Cathrina-Batrina, Moderator-Bodoretor.

In Konkani, any word or name is Reduplicated/reduplicative by a simple rule.
Change the first letter of the word to B (note some exceptions below)

e.g. Caitan-Baitan, Kazar-bazar, festam-bestam, Vasco-Basco etc
1.
Hem kazar koslem? (Sarkem Ponch!)
Kazarak Soro-Boro cainch nam.

Meaning,
What type of wedding (reception) is this?
No alcoholic drinks at all.

2.
Ladru: Are khuim re tum? Agxi Festak disonk nam nam mure..
Pedru: Maka festam-bestam lagonant, mojem kam borem haum boro.

Meaning
Ladru: Where wee you? Could see you at Agasaim Feast (on 10th Aug).
Pedru: I am not into Feasts etc. Just me and my work (job).

3
Rohit (a tourist in a Goan restaurant): Can I order two Chicken Tandoori?
Carmelin (A typical Goan): Are baba, inga Tandoori-Banduri kainch mevona,
focot xit-Koddi meuta.

Meaning:
(Carmelin) We don’t serve tandoori etc but only goan fish curry rice.

4
Hi xerkos kosli? Tinga makod-bakod cainch nasle (or hoti-boti, xiv-biv,
anxel-banxel* unttam-bunttam* etc)

Meaning
What type of circus is this? There were no animals at all.

Some irregulars or exceptions to the rule:
(1) If the name/word starts in B then the whole word kept/repeated as it is.
e.g.
Camil: (10 years ago) tumchea ghora fattleam kitlinxinch bokim (cranes)
distalim..
(Or Kitlexinch zaddam distalim)
Andre: Antam bokim-bokim kaich nam fogot distat tim ‘buildingam’
(or Antam zaddam-baddam kaich dissonant…)

meaning:
Camil: We could see many birds (cranes) behind your house
or we could see many trees
Andre: we don't see cranes etc (Birds) (or trees etc) now but just the
buildings (Concrete juncgle).

(2) When the first letter of the word/name starts with a vowel (i.e. A, E, I ,
O , U) then add B before the word ( the new/second word will now have one
letter more than the original/first one).
e.g. Aros-Baros, Estel-Bestel, Indur-Bindur, ontt-bontt, udhok-Budhok
(Pulav, Estel name of a person, Rat, Lips, Water)
*Similarly, (the above) Anxel-Banxel (bear), Unttam-Bunttam (Camels) etc

That’s enough now for today.

Now, the above Fodrina, Foderetor etc remind me of this..

I was just 7 years old.
While I was at Cotalim junction (Panjim-Margao-Miguel Rod Road-Sancoale Road).
By pointing my finger, I asked my elders..

Hi fekttry kosli? (What factory is that
He replied: Kapusachi (meaning cotton Factory)

As I grow older, say about 14-15, I said to my self:
When cotton is grown on trees then why produced in factory?

2 years later, as I was there for a litany (at Baddeam Furis) near the same
Cortalim junction, asked an elderly (a drunkard).
‘He fekttrint kitem kortat?
- ‘Fodre-potti’ he replied.

I really did not know what it mean at the time.
Some years later, I found out the meaning of ‘potti’ i.e. either strip or a
belt.
It was only when I was about 20, I discovered myself what it really mean.
It was nothing but the equivalent of the modern Tampax, Always, kotex,
stayfree etc which was then a ‘carefree’ from Christinhood.

I must also admit that from the Domnic’s recent post, I now know what it meant
by ‘Bontor nam munn gho, cheddvan askin pinjilam’

It is a good step but won't be enough in a place like Goa.

In Himachal Pradesh, non himachalis can buy land by making an
application with the State Cabinet.

In a state like Goa, where Politicians themselves are involved in land
deals, this will become cash machine for politicians and bureaucrats.

What is needed is a complete ban on land conversion to settlement zone
with some allowances.

Dear Filomena,
While I agree with the gist of your post, I think it is important to ask
questions from the point of learning. The convention is very young, and each
experience from it must be a learning experience. In my view, Kevin, Francis,
Bosco and other members of the team, are now a great source of information for
the next organizers of the convention. We still don't know definitively where
this will be. If it is London, I would recommend the next President spend hours
with Kevin and other committee members, either in person or on the phone.

But we don't have to be defensive about every question raised. Questions are
fair game in an event of this magnitude. One thing that failed the convention,
was the lack of coverage it got. We barely knew what was going on in Toronto,
save for a few photographs that streamed our way. There should have been a
full-time press person dedicated to coverage. Eugene's post was the first long,
detailed post and unfortunately it set the tone for what followed. I have
learnt a lot about the convention since then, and I understand now how much
hard work has gone into it and the outcomes that have emerged from it. Issues
of press coverage, attendance, objectives, venue, programmes, Faleiro's role in
it, are things we can all learn more about from Kevin and his team and hopefuly
work on for the next convention.

Again congratulations to the organizers of the convention. The sheer hard work
that went into it, deserves an award.

I personally, salute and congratulate the many Goans who have stayed, worked in
Goa and personally contributed their best, to make Goa, the wonderful state it
is today, as also, the Goans who are returning from foreign countries, today,
after retirement or even earlier to settle down in Goa.

Remember - Poor goans are forced to sell property out of poverty.

What is the excuse for some Goans who have no love for our state of Goa, who
sell inherited, ancestral property and take this wealth out of India, to make
foreign countries like Australia, Canada etc. richer?

Your statement - Why should they sell the house for five lakhs when they can
get eighty lakhs ? Does any one work for lesser salary ? That is the reason
they prefer to sell their house for non goans who would give them a nice price.

My reply - I have heard criminals too, state that they turned to crime because
they could earn Rs. 1 lakh a month or more and as salesmen they earned only Rs.
5,000/- per month.

I LOVE GOA.

[Goanet] Airport Bomb Scare (By Remo Fernandes, The Navhind Times)

2008-08-10 Thread Goanet News
Airport Bomb Scare
By Remo Fernandes

Lately, whenever I have travelled out of Goa on a short overnight
trip, I have driven to the airport myself, parked my car at the
convenient pay-park just outside the airport gate, and walked to the
departure area, my trolley suitcase in tow.

But on July 28, I was going to shoot a music video, and I was carrying
a heavy suitcase filled with costumes and instruments. Since I had
already tele-checked in the day before, I decided to drive up to the
departure gate, quickly drop my heavy luggage at the counter, park my
car at the parking lot, and return leisurely on foot.
I temporarily parked my car in front of the departure gate (10 minutes
parking is officially allowed at this spot, the 'No Parking' sign
notwithstanding), walked to the departure gate, and the cop on duty
asked me for a photo ID.

Now I normally produce photo IDs when asked. But what is it that made
me react badly to this simple routine request on that particular
morning? Was it my ego that was hurt because the cop didn't know who I
was? Was it the fact that I hadn't slept enough the previous night?
Was it the sights I had seen on the way to the airport, of migrants
defecating on the highway edge on that pure Goan monsoon morning? Or
the massive constructions I had seen along the way, destroying yet
more rice fields and hills, built by migrant builders, using migrant
labour, for migrant buyers? Or was it the accumulated angst against
Goan ministers selling off Goa to the highest bidder, serving everyone
else's interests except Goa's and Goans'?

It must have been a combination of all of the above. We Goans are
going through extremely sad and stressful times at the moment. The
grief of seeing our beloved land die right before our eyes, watching
it being swept away from under our feet, every single day, one day at
a time, does take its toll on one's mind, heart and soul.

I'm not trying to justify myself. I know I was wrong in reacting the
way I did. But the fact is, on that particular morning, the Demon of
Anger took over me. 'Hanv konn to nokoi? Tum Konkani uloitai?' I asked
the cop on duty. I don't speak Konkani, he said in Hindi. Why not,
if you're posted in Goa? Aren't you here to serve Goa and Goans?
By now a Jet Airways staffer noticed the altercation, and quickly came
and escorted me inside.

He then whisked me through the X-ray and check-in formalities, which
took about 5 minutes at the most -- there was absolutely no one at the
airport at 7.30 a.m., and Jet Airways had already printed my boarding
pass and kept it ready.

I walked out less than 6 minutes after I had walked in -- to find a
clamp around the front wheel of my car.

I learnt this had been ordered by a person from the Airport
Authorities of India [AAI], who sat in a glass cabin right next to
where I had had my little exchange with the policeman. I saw it as a
straight case of revenge for the argument of a few minutes before --
and whatever little patience I had left gave way.

I walked to the glass cabin peephole, saw a Sardar called Mr Bhattu
and his Keralite assistant inside, and demanded to know why my car
wheel had been clamped. The Sardar claimed it had been parked there
for longer than the officially allowed 10 minutes. I said, No way, it
was not over six minutes. And how is a lone traveller who drives
himself to the airport supposed to check in with heavy luggage, if he
does not park the car for a few minutes outside the terminal?

But the Sardar refused to listen, and my Goan blood boiled over again.
:You're coming to my state and trying to harass me? I asked. There
is no 'this state and that state'! There is only one India! he
stormed. Yes, there is only one India, but when we are posted in
other states, we must show respect and courtesy to the locals, not
boss over them! I stormed back. Are you going to remove that clamp
or not?

His assistant said that for this I would have to pay a parking fine. I
said, No way am I going to bow down to your harassment, because this
is nothing but revenge and harassment! It is an illegal fine, because
I was not inside the airport for longer than six minutes! Do what you
like, I'm taking my car keys and going to Mumbai.

[Goanet] GT mis-diagnosis:GBA in shackles?

2008-08-10 Thread Miguel Braganza

Dears,

The GT Weekender today comes up with an astonishing report ...like Dan
Brown's Da Vinci Code. Perhaps, the Editor was using the Saturday's Goan
Observer as the Primer. It has the usual suspects Oscar, Sabina , Patricia,
Miguel  [incidentally, all CATHOLICS from NORTH GOA] and excludes Shridhar
Kamat, Dilip Prabhudesai and others [all HINDU GSBs from SOUTH GOA]. There is a
nice photo of Oscar, Patricia and Sabina sitting in Patricia and Agnelo's
dining room to help create the proper image. Why are Shridhar, Dilip and others
missing from the photo? They are supposed to be the GBA of the South. I am NOT
a communal or casteist or North v/s South Goa kind of person. The GT obviously
is in this report.

The intro plug says it all: Starting out as the last great hope for Goa, the
Goa Bachao Abhiyan, .. If you get images of the Opinion Poll, not to
worry. Patricia's house is bang opposite Dr.Jack de Sequeira's house.

If it reminds you of the Konkani Parjecho Avaz or KPA, no sweat either. The
same folks that deceived the Catholic masses to agitate for Konkani  and then
manipulated the Official Language Bill,1987, the denies that there is anything
like Konkani written in the Roman script, are at play. So what if 90 % of the
agitators do not jnow the difference between Konkani, Marathi and Hindi when it
is written in a script they cannot read, Devanagri. That is the ONLY script in
which one can write the Official Language of Goa.

So you did not want Regional Plan 2011? Now take Regional Plan 2021, amended
Section 16 and 16A of the TCP Act, ODP 2011, Taluka PDAs to cover ALL villages
and towns and a Mining Policy to supplemnet the SEZ Policy that is yet to
be withdrawn.

The GT is just a spoke in the wheel of development. May the worthies who
write such reports live long enough to see their grandchildren suffer for their
acts of kindness.

Goa Bachao Abhiyan is no Great White Hope. It was not conceived as an elitist
NGO. The people in the rallies were not gavddi cannon fodder like in the case
of KPA. The error of the KPA must NEVER be repeated. So what if the KBM
allegedly provide the cannon fodder for the South? It can well be poison fodder
that give us bull.

Mog asundi.

2008-08-10 Thread Fr. Ivo C da Souza

From: Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED]
As you can see from the post quoted below, contrary to earlier claims
not even a bureaucratic committee meeting was called to certify these
incredible miracles, let alone follow any kind of genuine scientific
procedure.
***It was subsequently studied by a Committee. Dr.Santosh is conveniently
forgetting that it has happened instantly: the white host made out of bread
has turned into flesh and blood. It has been witnessed several times by the
people who were present. If this happens while we are distributing
Communion, what proof do we require? What scientific phenomenon is this? He
can always coin new terms for these phenomena, but is not able to explain
them away. Not being a scientist, I would explain it in terms of Jesus, who
spoke of his own body and blood, his glorified body. This would be for me
more than a proof... But we do not need to see all these phenomena, since
our faith is rooted in the words of Our Lord. These cases abound.

The supernatural claims made by an individual and her priests were
accepted without any independent verification by unbiased expert
observers or by any kind of actual tests to ascertain whether real flesh
and blood had materialized.
***These are facts witnessed by sound people. Senses do not fail. These
phenomena have been witnessed by the late Holy Father John Paul. Was it
nuclear cloning? Was it hallucination? It was flesh and blood. How can flesh
and blood be produced in believer's mouth after she received the sacred
host? Can an unbiased expert observer deny the fact? Where is bias in this
case? Where is deception in this case? I am ready to hear from Dr.Santosh
any scientific explanation for the phenomenon and then verify it with the
help of another scientist.

Nobody bothered to investigate whether they were human flesh and blood.
***What else could be? Bird's flesh and bird, produced by a magician in that
sacred moment?

No samples of the flesh and blood were preserved for a subsequent
thorough scientific examination to rule out the very likely possibility
of pious fraud, and to establish the validity of not just the immediate
extraordinary claims, but indeed the tenability of the entire belief
system surrounding them.
***This is wrong. The report speaks of later investigation. How can it be
pious fraud? Has Julia Kim done it in the presence of so many people? Has
she put hen's meat in her mouth? Is this the scientific explanation? How is
at stake the tenability of the entire belief system? On the contrary,
these are signs of faith rooted in historical facts, the Last Supper, the
death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.
Dr.Santosh is trying to condemn religious rites with his scientific myopia.
Let him be more serious in his statements, or at least recognize that it is
not possible for him to give a verdict on these Christian dogmas. Dogma has
arisen from the faith in the words of Jesus. The words of Jesus can be
verified in several ways. Dr.Santosh is welcome to shed light on
superstitions and snatch them away from our society...

A real scientific procedure would demand one to find out if the tissue
and blood in question matches that of anybody connected with this
event, primarily Julia Kim.
***The host is turned into flesh and blood as soon as she receives the
sacred bread into her mouth. How can it be of Julia Kim? Magic? Common sense
would exclude this scientific hypothesis of Dr.Santosh. This has been
repeating itself several times in the presence of so many people. The Bishop
is a witness. Julia Kim is not a magician, but a simple believer. She
believes in the dogma of transsubstantiation. Here is a sign.

Scientists would want to know if both X and Y chromosomes were present in
the cells from the flesh and in the white blood cells, because of the
claim of virgin birth.
***Why to involve the scientists in another controversy? There are grounds
to accept virginal conception (not virginal birth) of Jesus in the
historical tradition of the Gospels. I shall not delve into this more
complex question whether there are X and Y chromosomes?

They would ask that nuclear and mitochondrial DNA be sequenced, so Korean
ancestry could be ruled in or out, and the correct geneology be
determined.
***Whose genealogy? Korean ancestry? Why? Is this flesh coming from her
stomach?

The level of gullibility displayed in the quoted post indicates that the
people involved in propagating such miracles do not want their claims
to be subjected to real scientific tests, and face the prospect of
disillusionment.
**The best solution would be to take Dr.Santosh for the scientific
discovery. To speak of gullibility in this case is another un-scientific
statement. We do not need to propagate these miracles, they have happened
several times in history of Christianity and have been investigated by
scientists, except by Dr.Santosh... Thanks for suggesting scientific tests

I was taught that wisdom lies in not saying or making claims about what one
does not know. For example, contrary to what the post quoted below says,
physicists and cosmologists know that there indeed is chaos in the universe.

But more importantly, modern science teaches us that it is foolish to draw
premature conclusions from lack of knowledge about something at any given time.
Science certainly does not think it is very wise to resort to supernatural or
miraculous explanations for the natural universe. Instead, it demands that we
continue our honest and dispassionate quest for natural explanations.

Cheers,

Physician Tells of Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano
Edoardo Linoli Verified Authenticity of the Phenomenon

ROME, MAY 5, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Dr. Edoardo Linoli says he held real cardiac
tissue in his hands, when some years ago he analyzed the relics of the
Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano, Italy.

The phenomenon dates back to the eighth century. A Basilian monk, who had
doubts about the real presence of Christ in the sacred species, was offering
Mass, in a church dedicated to St. Legontian in the town of Lanciano.

When he pronounced the words of the consecration, the host was miraculously
changed into physical flesh and the wine into physical blood.

Later the blood coagulated and the flesh remained the same. These relics
were kept in the cathedral.

Linoli, a professor of anatomy and pathological histology, and of chemistry
and clinical microscopy, and former head of the Laboratory of Pathological
Anatomy at the Hospital of Arezzo, is the only doctor who has analyzed the
relics of the miracle of Lanciano. His findings have stirred interest in the
scientific world.

At the initiative of Archbishop Pacifico Perantoni of Lanciano, and of the
provincial minister of the Franciscan Conventuals of Abruzzo, and with
authorization from Rome, in November 1970 the Franciscans of Lanciano
decided to have the relics examined scientifically.

Linoli was entrusted with the study. He was assisted by Dr. Ruggero
Bertelli, retired professor of human anatomy at the University of Siena.

Linoli extracted parts of the relics with great care and then analyzed the
remains of miraculous flesh and blood. He presented his findings on March
4, 1971.

His study confirmed that the flesh and blood were of human origin. The flesh
was unequivocally cardiac tissue, and the blood was of type AB.

Consulted by ZENIT, Linoli explained that as regards the flesh, I had in my
hand the endocardium. Therefore, there is no doubt at all that it is cardiac
tissue.

In regard to the blood, the scientist emphasized that the blood group is
the same as that of the man of the holy Shroud of Turin, and it is
particular because it has the characteristics of a man who was born and
lived in the Middle East regions.

The AB blood group of the inhabitants of the area in fact has a percentage
that extends from 0.5% to 1%, while in Palestine and the regions of the
Middle East it is 14-15%, Linoli said.

Linoli's analysis revealed no traces of preservatives in the elements,
meaning that the blood could not have been extracted from a corpse, because
it would have been rapidly altered.

Linoli's report was published in Quaderni Sclavo di Diagnostica Clinica e
di Laboratori in 1971.

In 1973, the Higher Council of the World Health Organization (WHO) appointed
a scientific commission to verify the Italian doctor's conclusions. The work
was carried out over 15 months with a total of 500 examinations. The
conclusions of all the researches confirmed what had been stated and
published in Italy.

The extract of the scientific research of WHO's medical commission was
published in New York and Geneva in 1976, confirming science's inability to
explain the phenomenon.

Today, Linoli participated in a congress on Eucharistic miracles organized
by the Science and Faith master's program of Rome's Regina Apostolorum
Pontifical University, in cooperation with the St. Clement I Pope and Martyr
Institute, on the occasion of the Year of the Eucharist under way.

Eucharistic miracles are extraordinary phenomena of a different type,
Legionary Father Rafael Pascual, director of the congress, told Vatican
Radio. For example, there is the transformation of the species of bread and
wine into flesh and

[Goanet] Media slut fires blank shots at the Church

2008-08-10 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

The Margao builder lobby, their moles within GBA,
and their hired media sluts are at a desperate pass.
The recent stunt of the GBA convener's resignation
has not had the desired effect of evoking any
sympathy wave for the convener and his claque.
The idea - now proving itself to be a thunderous
flop - was to draw attention away from the RP2021
scam about to be unloaded on the Goan people.
In the latest version of his toilet-wipe, Rajan Narayan
of Kerala, who has for years tried - and miserably
failed - to masquerade as a champion of Goan
Catholics, has called upon the Bishop to fire
Fr. Maverick of CSJP.

Why would Rajan Narayan's free-booze-suppliers
want Fr. Maverick out of their way? Let me
explain. Fr. Maverick has mobilized people in
the villages to launch their own independent
movements against rampant construction, as
witness the resistance in the Salcette hamlets.
This has had a twofold effect: (a) it has caused
a great deal of financial hurt to the builders,
and (b) it has effectively shunted the GBA and
reduced them to idle spectators. Now, GBA
not being in control is disastrous for the Margao
builder lobby and its moles. Furthermore,
Fr. Maverick seems to have refused to play
ball with the Margao builder lobby's chelas.
Hence this drastic appeal to the Bishop to install
a pliant replacement.

[Goanet] Goans are angry!

2008-08-10 Thread soter
Remo's anger is definitely reflective of the growing emotional turmoil within
many of us goans. Peaceful Society's work in the remotest of villages in 7
States of India has given me the opportunity to have a first hand experience of
cultures and so called unwritten codes within societies. I have had the
opportunity of listening to non-goans exhorting me to tell fellow goans not to
be fools in allowing Goa to be turned into another filthy Indian metro by
allowing indiscriminate migration and construction. Many states in
neighbouring Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, besides the scheduled
areas, have an unwritten code of not selling land to outsiders. When one goes
in their markets one will have to interact as far as possible in the local
language and they will not be courteous to you if you do not communicate in
their language. But Goa's markets are full of migrants who do not know the
local language and goans go out of their way to communicate in the migrants
language. Here we have our local vendors are being pushed out of the markets
with the help of local panchas and councillors. The migrant talks in a fashion
that he can buy out any one in this State, from the local Sarpanch, councillor,
bureaucrat to the MP. Some non-goan bureaucrats have contempt for goans.
Everyone has a right in this country, except goans. We goans are happy
squabbling among ourselves and sponsoring non-goans to feed us bull shit in
some newspapers and run systematic campaigns against goan initiatives.

 Subject: Benaulim Panchayat

The Sarpanch respective Panchayat Members of Benaulm should be stop
playing Games and stop all Mega-Projects; as per the wishes of the
People. They and the Local MLA should realise by now that Genuine Goans, will
not longer allow the destruction of Goa.The Builders should back off
immediately; no longer will your political god fathers be able to support
your greed, at the expense of our home. I suggest that the Sarpanch meet
with the Benaulim Villagers Action Committee and convince them that the
mega-projects are being stopped with hard facts; else the Benaulim Panchayat
should be dissolved, as demanded by the people. We need to see immediate
action!!

[Goanet] Mr. Bhattu

2008-08-10 Thread Bernado Colaco
This guy called Remo is paid with the same coin. The other day on Contacto he
was criticising Goans for being arrogant etc. Now he gets it straight from the
bharatis.
Ush, ush Remo.
BC

[Goanet] Triangulation for the truth

2008-08-10 Thread Philip Thomas
Two reports on the much touted Tourism Meet of Aug 8 are worrisome to put it
mildly. One compounds the confusion in the other. These reports appeared in
HERALD and TOI of Aug 9. HERALD says Gov[ernor] links top notch airports to
tourism. For good measure he is said to have added if Bangalore and
Hyderabad and Cochin can have airports on the PPP model so can Goa for its
future growth. The worthy gentleman seems to be either unaware of or is
covering up the serious problems of connectivity (both surface and air)
especially Bangalore is facing on account of the PPP project of BIAL which
goanetters should be aware of by now.

In fact these airports along with the Delhi and Bombay PPP projects may be
instrumental in jacking up costs of civil aviation across the board in the
country soon with UDF on passengers and higher space rentals/charges for
other airport users. Even AAI airports are now wanting to follow the lead in
greed. At this rate Dabolim will not be far behind once Mopa is up and
running. Higher costs is one thing, no service at all is an altogether
different and unacceptable matter.

This is tied to the other half baked idea proposed by Gov Sidhu. Dabolim
airport which is slated for expansion can cater to domestic travel while the
new airport could cater to charter and international flights. The problem
is that the latter are very few in number on an average daily basis. How can
a mega project envisaging A380 superjumbos be meaningful in this context?
The only result will be that idomestic traffic will be sucked away from
Dabolim and the latter will have to close. What the Governor is talking
about is only echoing the earlier idea of the Chief Minister who, for public
consumption, has been saying Mopa yes, but not at the cost of Dabolim.

Unless the Mopa plan is downsized to a world class REGIONAL airport
(catering to Tier II town traffic from surrounding areas, connecting to
secondary airports (if any) of Bombay and Bangalore, and growing gradually
and systematically), a full fledged international airport right off the bat
at Mopa will be a disaster for Dabolim and for Goa.

Dr Sidhu is also supposed to have given a plug for air cargo without
specifying its location. Here is a line of business that Mopa can
conceivably depend on since there are serious constraints at Dabolim for it.
It would have to be specialised cargo aviation and not in the belly space of
passenger airlines (which would be predominant at Dabolim). Careful and
thoughtful analysis of Goa's cargo business is required, not off the cuff
plans.

The rest of the report is about tourism which may be the real forte of the
new governor. For this we turn to the TOI story titled Two airports can
co-exist in state: Promotion of eco, intellectual tourism also stressed
upon. Besides the two mentioned (btw, what is intellectual 'tourism')
there are also references to leisure tourism, adventure tourism, hinterland
tourism, spice tourism, health tourism etc etc. Goa tourism may be in a
crisis mode currently and the need of the hour is to converge on the most
beneficial ones rather than grope around for a magic bullet, spreading
resources thin in the process.

The upshot is that the confusion in aviation is compounded and confounded
by that in tourism. In the case of the former it is high time the powers
that be spelled out how the two airports 'would' co-exist instead of being
stuck in the rut of 'can co-exist'. This requires a sensible discussion of
how the Mopa airport project (its business model, design, finance, build-up
etc) would be managed along with its subsequent operation as well as
regulation to co-exist in a mutually beneficial way with Dabolim civil
enclave (including the latter's upgradation and expansion) for, say, twenty
(20) years into the future? But its easier to feed the Goan public with
catchy slogans rather than substantive plans.

DrSidhu's idea, expressed earlier, that tourism in Goa should be based on a
balance of interests between environment and economy and that Goa needs to
identify its own brand image and develop it, is no doubt indisputable in
principle. But it needs to be translated urgently into action beginning with
the plan(s) for Mopa and Dabolim taken together rather than in isolation.

About the Dabolim airport, he said earlier (again in HERALD) that though it
is a defence airport, it needs to be continued with even after the PPP one
is commissioned. Hopefully he means as a user-friendly facility for the aam
admi and not just for occasional VVIPs as at HAL and Begumpet nowadays. The
worry on this score has only been accentuated rather than attentuated with
his newest comments. I do hope I am wrong about this-- for Goa's sake.
