Re: [Goanet] Can someone tell me what about this surname?
UP Kamath is surely making assumptions i.e. that Colaco provided any analysis in his post or that he was looking for an apology. Far from it. Colaco was only looking for answers. I agree fully with Kamath wrt # 5 infra. I am pretty shocked to read from Kamath that the Saraswats were crooked and cruel. I had not heard that from Saraswat sites. About 'advertising in names', I do not know why some people would advertise ;bad stuff' in their names. May be ...it is easier to revise the bad stuff and make it look like distinguished stuff than it is to go through the bother of changing names - especially as names stick. But then, I wonder - what is the explanation for Indian surnames like:Kalia, Langda and Chutia or in other surnames like Small, Black, Short, Crook? In a way, I can understand the surname Mahalingam but not the above. I would be interested in your point # 6 - and have NO clue as to what you meant to say in point #7 jc == 2008/9/11 U P Kamath [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1: There are some pretty big holes in Colacos analysis. 2: They were government officials just like the present - corrupt and crooked as always they shall be. 3. Even if Nadakarnis were crooked, why would they advertise it in their name? 4. Colaco, try however hard, you wont get any apology for misdeeds of my Saraswat forefathers. I may agree to their crookedness or cruelty. One thing you wont get from me is apology for their deeds or guilt. 5. I am accountable only for my deeds and actions. 6. It could be possible to prove logically that Khazana lands of Goa were developed by outsiders (not necessorily saraswats)- not original inhabitants of Goa, by possibly employing locals, by payment or by coercions - 7. Simply because the very project was stupid and makes very little economic sense.

Laluram Salvi(LS) wrote: The Christian fanatics led by the local Congress MP and other hooligans suspected to be from the local chapter of the World Vision of India were responsible for killing the swami and four other people including a woman and two minors. Comment: This is contrary to the information released by the BJP-BJD government and the Police. Moreover, the Maoist organisation has also issued a press release taking responsibility for the killings. If Laluram Salvi if privy to facts which are contrary to that in the public domain, it is his bounden duty to disclose the same with the identities of the killers to the Police. Otherwise he would be abetting crime. LS: This in turn led to retaliation by Swami's followers which led to a violent backlash against churches and Christian missionaries in Orissa. Comment: This is the classic 'action-reaction' statement of Narendra Modi. No evidence, no proof, no legal process need be followed, but the hindutva forces can take law into their own hands and kill, burn, rape, destroy all with state backing and support. The VHP/BD can become prosecution, witness and judge as in any banana republic. LS: The WVI is a fundamentalist organization committed to harvesting hatred against hindus in India. doing the good work the swami started - caring for our children, for our weak and poor and find god through good karma. Comment: After weeding out all the rhetoric and propaganda stuff, mostly gleaned from hindutva hate sites, Laluram Salvi is unable to substantiate a single allegation nor refute a single fact published in the media or on this forum about the activities and violence unleashed by hindutva forces on the minorities in Orissa and elsewhere. And therein lies the truth. I further invite him to read today's Times of India carrying reports of the violence indulged in by the HJS, an organisation having its base in Goa, in various parts of Mharashtra. Please do not try to defend the indefensible. Regards, Marshall A
Re: [Goanet] Orissa Voilence
Dear Lauram Salvi, Do not try to misguide people by writing such articles. Hindus are 85% in our country and 95% in Orissa. All of them are peace loving people. We lived and brought up among themselves. They always hate terror. But it is an open truth that some of the fundamental organisations are trying to brainwash youngsters who have little knowledge of the world and through them they carry out their evil missions. It Laxmanananda Saraswati was a peace loving person he would not have been issuing provocative statements against Christians. Why he was saying that Christians need to be wiped out. Why did he threatened Christians not to celebrate Christmas last year. Why he went in a violent march to demolish decorations put up by Christians for Christmas last year and initiated terror? I personally met Fr. Edward, Fr. Bernard and Fr. Thomas who miraculously survived in the attack. Fr. Edward was saying that he did not even see Laxmanananda Saraswati as his orphanage was more than 400 km away. The VHP leaders in his area had initially troubled him but he could win their hearts through his good deeds. They were my friends he said. Though one small girl came and informed him that he will be burnt he never cared. He thought why anybody will trouble him. He also said he never converted a single person in his 28 years of service. He was only running a leprosy centre and an orphanage for unprivileged girls. He was questioning that if it was not an organised terror how it was possible to spread at the same time at all places even up to his place which is more than 400k away? We do not know who killed Saraswati. If fundamental organisations blame Christians for his murder why can't some other person or organisation accuse that he was killed by the members of one of the fundamental organisations to initiate hatred and terror against Christians? But it is very painful to understand that just because of these few evil minded people the name of the large number of peace loving Hindu's get maligned. Also remember that missionaries are working in tribal areas for centuries together. If there was any kind of forcible conversion was taken place then there would have been at least 40% presence of Christians. But remember Christian population in Orissa is only 2% inspite major institutions, schools, hospitals are run by Christians. If VHP which is registered as a social charitable trust really cares his people and works for the upliftment of the Hindus and safeguard them then it should engage into such activities (Building institutions, schools, Hospitals etc) to get reputation in the society. Remember evil methods are exposed one day or other. Ancy
[Goanet] Chargesheet filed against six in Thane blast case
12 Sep 2008, 0526 hrs IST,TNN MUMBAI: The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) on Thursday filed a 1,025-page chargesheet against six persons for their alleged role in the bomb blasts in two auditoriums in Thane and Vashi. They have also been chargesheeted for a bomb that did not go off in a theatre in Panvel. Th six persons - Ramesh Hanumant Gadkari (50), Mangesh Nikam (34), Santosh Angre (26), a homeopath Dr Hemant Chalke, Vikram Bhave (26) and a police patil Hari Bhau Divekar -were sevaks of the Sanatan Sanstha, a Hindu revivalist group and sister organisation of Hindu Janjagruti Samiti, and were arrested in mid-June . The police claimed that they had recovered a large number of timer devices, chemcials, circuits and other things used in making the bombs. The chargesheet was filed in additional chief metropolitan magistrate's court. We have listed 197 persons as witnesses in the case. The accused are still in Arthur Road jail, said an officer. On May 31, a bomb exploded in the parking lot of Gakdari Rangayatan theatre in Thane, injuring seven persons. A play, Amhi Pachpute was to be staged there. The Sanstha had protested the play saying that it had portrayed Hindu gods and goddesses in poor light. The arrested were also booked for their alleged role in the Vishnu Bhave auditorium blast in Vashi and planting a bomb in a Panvel cinema hall. The ATS said that Gadkari, Bhave and Nikam knew how to make bombs. They were all present when the bombs were being manufactured. During interrogation, the accused said they had funded the operations from their savings. Gadkari had sold his shop to became a full-time sevak. While Gadkari and Angre stayed at Sanatan Ashram in Devat near Panvel, Nikam was arrested from Satara and Bhave was picked up from Wadala. The bombs were manufactured at Bhave's house. During the raids at Bhave's and Nikam's homes and farms in Warsai village in Pen, ATS seized two revolvers, huge quantity of ammonium nitrate powder, 20 detonators, 19 gelatin sticks, timers, voltage meters, two radio circuits and remote controls. Investigators said Divekar was arrested for hiding and trying to destroy the explosives. Comment: Goans should be very concerned about this as the base of the HJS is in Goa. The HJS was taking out hate exhibitions all over Goa which was attended even by Digambar Kamat and the MGP MLA's. Wonder if any organisation or MLA is taking up this matter in the assembly. Also whether the police have put this organisation under the scanner.

[Goanet] Soapstone
If there any Goanetter living in Bhusaval or anyplace else, who knows about soapstone, and perhaps interested in helping me out. I am interested in working in soapstone, basically carving Kanji / Nagari / Siddham characters from which to pull off impressions. This is an area known as Tenkoku (the carving of seals) and the script style is known as Tensho (not the karate kata) / Chinese - Zhuan Shu. Example of seal script: http://anndundon.com/calligraphy/html/scripts/ten.html Why soapstone? Simply because I assume it may be available in large sizes, larger than 4 x 4. It is hard to get stones from China, that are large -- besides when available they are expensive, unless bought in China. Soapstone is easier to carve and may be worked at a faster pace. Of course it must not be too soft in which case it would be difficult to maintain a good edge. If you can be of help please do contact me and we can discuss specs, and also how we may go about the transaction, commission, etc. The shipping will be to Mumbai, payment from Mumbai. http://wapedia.mobi/en/Talk:Seal_script Venantius J Pinto
[Goanet] On Orissa from IHT
http://www.iht.com/articles/reuters/2008/09/12/asia/OUKWD-UK-INDIA-HINDUS.php Tribal lands become factory for Hindu foot soldiers By Krittivas Mukherjee / Reuters Published: September 12, 2008 JALESPETA, India: Deep inside the thickly forested hills of eastern India, where ancient tribes live in huts of grass-and-mud cut off from modernity, a stealth electoral weapon is at work for India's Hindu nationalists. It is a sprawling residential school founded by a Hindu proselytiser, where girls from animistic tribes learn Sanskrit prayers and Hindu philosophy in between gardening and cooking. Across India's remote tribal belt, a zone of Christian missionary activity for decades, such tutelage is aimed at converting tribes to Hinduism and creating foot soldiers for Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP, the political standard-bearer of India's Hindu nationalist groups. The BJP is performing well in tribal-belt because of the good work done by the Sangh Parivar, Jual Oram, BJP's vice-president and a tribal MP, told Reuters, referring to the Hindu revivalist movement set up partly to counter Christian missionaries. As the party prepares for national elections due by May, the foot soldiers of Hinduism recruited in thousands of places such as the Kanya Ashram school for girls in Jalespeta will help in campaigning. They are among the party's grassroots network across India. In most states, the recruitment of followers for the BJP sparks little controversy. But in this region, it has often led to conflict. Since last month, at least 16 people, mostly Christians, have been killed in reprisal attacks in Orissa state after the murder of the founder of the Kanya Ashram girls' school. More than three percent of Orissa's 40.5 million people are Christians, many of them devout converts from Hinduism, according to the World Christian Database. They are prime targets of these new Hindu nationalist campaigners eager to swell their ranks. To counter the missionaries, Sangh Parivar, an affiliated group of Hindu organisations has replicated their work. It has opened thousands of schools and medical facilities to increase its influence among poor tribes, traditional worshippers of nature who Hindu radicals say are weaned into Christianity by coercion or inducements such as free education and healthcare. We have reconverted about 50,000 people in the past 40 years, said Hansraj Maharaj, who looks after the Kanya Ashram in Jalespeta in the eastern state of Orissa. He says the number of reconversions, as an ancillary benefit, directly amplifies the number of votes for the BJP. HINDU NATIONALISM In 25 years, the BJP has gone from a bit player to the main national opposition party, a success many credit to the diligence of groups such as Kanya Ashram through its focus on Hindutva or Hinduness, a concept defined in sometimes strident, even fatal opposition to Muslims and Christians. The BJP led a central coalition from 1998-2004 after a brief stint in power in 1996. It now governs or shares power in 12 Indian states, in many of which it enacted laws making converting difficult or even impossible. Although the Kanya Ashram and another residential school for boys in nearby Chakapada village say they are a social service organisation, the links to the party are hard to ignore -- the work of Hindu nationalist groups has been a political project as much as a religious and cultural one. Full-time workers from these ashrams help in election canvassing, touring tribal villages and telling people to vote for the lotus flower that is the BJP's symbol. The long-term aim of the ashrams is to have students always think of Hindutva and become automatic supporters of the BJP. But the battle for votes is only a convenient by-product of the battle for souls which Hindu groups have fought with Christian missionaries engaged in converting tribesmen. Christians form less than three percent of officially secular but mainly Hindu India's 1.1-billion population. But Hindu say conversion rates are high in tribal belts where missionaries either coax or coerce the poor into changing their faith. Christians say the Sangh Parivar uses the spectre of conversion to unite Hindus for votes. RELIGIOUS RIOTING In this tranquil village nestled in the teak forests, religious conflict seems particularly unlikely. Yet the calm is eerie following days of religious rioting last week. Away from modernity, it is a place from another time, without electricity or tap water. Barefoot children play with cows. Women walk to a nearby market, balancing bundles of firewood on their heads, while bare-chested, sinewy men plough patches of fields. It's a deceptive lull before more violence, said Lambodara Kanhar, a leader of the Kondh tribe of Orissa's remote Kandhamal. Local media reports said fear of attacks was prompting many Christians among the tribes and ethnic groups to convert to Hinduism, with a ceremony

[Goanet] Book review of Mario's book
http://www.outlookindia.com/full.asp?fodname=20080915fname=Booksasid=1 Miss Nimboopani, Sweet And Sour Mario Miranda extracted humour from every nook of life. A sun-warmed compendium. Gautam Bhatia A literary production on a working life as prodigious and varied as Goan artist Mario Miranda’s can barely do justice to the artist’s life. Countless books on great artists like Da Vinci or Picasso only skim the surface. The process of creation is far more difficult to display than just the final work of art. Miranda has been luckier. In a new compilation of his work that is more diary and scrapbook than formal artistic odyssey, publisher Gerard da Cunha, himself a Goan, realised the vastness of his task, and chose a different course. He gathered a handful of the artist’s long-time friends—Manohar Malgaonkar, Nissim Ezekiel, Ranjit Hoskote and others whose words matter—and in a literary goulash, set out a spread of writing, reflection and presentation. An artistic feast under a blue Goan sky. Ever since there has been popular drawing in India, there has been Mario Miranda. In barber shop Illustrated Weeklies, in the Times of India, a Mario drawing leapt out at you with all its excesses: Miss Nimboopani, big-breasted and full-lipped; obese politicians, shifty-eyed and small-brained—Mario’s tableau underscore his conviction that nothing is sacred: people, religion, politics, history, taste, aspiration. Everything under the sun is potential target for lampoon. The book charts the extraordinary facility of the man. From diary sketches and cartoons that take playful potshots at small-town life and small-minded communities, to elaborate renderings of Goa that are complete stories in themselves, the pages are filled with energetic and teeming statements of Indian situations. The artist in Miranda is driven by two impulses. To make a cartoon, spare and focused by humour, or to construct an elaborate drawing, painterly in intent, and defining space. Between the two, there are limitless explorations of human conditions—politics, religion, and the happy hypocrisy and humbug that define urban life. Known for the etching-like drawing style, the sketchbooks exhibit a variety that is as much M.C. Escher as Le Corbusier or Canaletto. As much Punch as they are The New Yorker. And of course, as much Mario. At the outset Mario admits,I just love to draw. Few people today would echo such a sentiment. In an age when Photoshop and Corel Draw have replaced the skill of drawing, few give it the attention it deserves. Yet with Mario there is the perennial artistic impulse to experiment with expression for its own sake. The travel series that includes New York, Japan, London, Paris is perhaps his most varied. Each scene is viewed from an outsider’s vantage, and deliberately constructed in outlines that resemble engravings. In some, lines are layered to create the effects of a painting; others evolve as vivid prints, filled with an animated light, graphic and precise. His Goan record, drawn with loving care, is his most prolific and detailed. The darkness of church interiors, the white light on pastel houses, pudgy and self-absorbed holiday crowds—each fleeting moment consolidates into multiple and cumulative impressions. Mario records Goa like a doting father, faithfully recording every change into the family album. Growing up under its tropical lushness and pastel colonialism, the Goa drawings are a longing—a benign and pastoral hankering for the slow life, the Goa of childhood, where there was music, love and laughter. The care with which each scene is constructed invariably resounds with celebration—weddings, feasts, funerals—and links you to a time before murder and drugs also became synonymous associations. The excesses of Indian life at times overwhelm Mario’s art. In some of the more elaborate and overworked drawings it is hard to distil a single idea. And the distinction between ugly, beautiful, grotesque, delicate, brutal, or fanciful, all becomes clouded in superfluous detail. Is the artist deliberately confusing the viewer, or is he merely making a truthful representation of life’s messiness? Mario’s skill lies in the masterful austerity of line in his less finished drawings and the incisive wit of his cartoons. I’ve always admired the artist’s deformations of Indian life, the perennial exaggeration of scenes from naughty to obscene, the delicate flourishes that mark out stereotypes. Drawing has been for Mario the first reaction—an intimate and spontaneous reflection of daily life made visible. In a career spanning five decades, few urban Indian homes have not resounded with the laughter of a Mario view of their local world. Even today many of the cartoons—devoid of politics and regional character—are fresh. The book is a pungent record of India, laced with infinite compassion. A bellyful of laughs and stinging truths, without cynicism

Re: [Goanet] Orissa Voilence
1. Let me start by saying that 'RELIGION' in all forms has been the bane of humanity. More people of the world have been killed and are being killed in the name of God/s. 2. India has adobted SECULARISM. What I understand by this word is that a State Governance will respect all RELIGION/s but will not side or be biased for or against any religion. That means religions and/or religious sentiments must remain a PRIVATE affair of the population and must not interfere with the governance of the state. That also means that the State must move like a 'ton of bricks' when required, to maintain peace, but also has to be vigilant to identify infected sores which could lead to the disturbance of this peace and eliminate these well in time. That means the State must act 'before' and 'after'. Needless to say that if the State acts 'before', it will not need to act 'after'. 3. By the above definition, and in relation to Orissa, if the Christian fundamentalists were actively planning the worst for the Swamiji, and perhaps vice versa, where was the State intelligence? This is 'before'. The Christian fundamentalists succeeded in the plans to eliminate Swamiji. Where was the State? This bis 'after'. 4. It is apparent that the State is in constant connivance with both (or various) destabilising forces with the end result that the State's SECULAR credentials are questioned. When innocent people get burnt, killed, raped, maimed, with properties destroyed left right and center, the State cannot be called SECULAR and the leaders that be who are custodians of the State cannot be the custodians of that SECULAR STATE and therefore must be held acutely and absolutely RESPONSIBLE. 5. If everything that the State wants to achieve in terms of progress is allowed to be frittered away through these silly, mindless - abstract - GOD oriented machinations and skirmishes, then this State must start re-thinking all over again about it's SECULARITY. 6. If we do not want this RELIGIOUS poison to kill us all, without exception, then we need to find the potent antidote for this poison. 7. The antidote has always been around since the setting up of this STATE called INDIA since 1947. The designers of India's Constitution saw to it that it was readily available and around to safe-guard the Nation's march towards progress and the elimination of prejudices. But India's subsequent weak leadership pushed this antidote to the far corners almost making it non-existent. Examples: The Ayodhya conflict and the subsequent demolition of the Babri Masjid. The burning alive of Graham Staines and his two sons. Godhra, Savordem-Curchorem [Goa]. And now Orissa. 8. If this Nation called India does not move in the direction to ' lock' this singular Chernobyl [RELIGIOUS STRIFES] in waiting within the hearts of its respective peoples, within the confines of the four walls of its worship houses, liberating the providentially provided gift of the 'clean atmosphere' from the toxicity of the fumes emanating from these corrosive religious entities, we will need more than the GOD Almight Himself to save this Nation. And last but not the least 9. There is the urgent need to start a hunt for ' potent leadership' to take hold of this self-destructive Nation which will have what it takes to come out, leaving it's RELIGIOuS SENTIMENTS locked at home and locked within one's heart, take the broom in hand and start SWEEPING this Nation clean of this most dangerous VIRUS. floriano goasuraj - Original Message - From: Laluram Salvi [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2008 8:03 PM Subject: [Goanet] Orissa Voilence Lot of articles have been written on Goanet on violence in Orissa which reflects only one side of it. [Goanet] India in the world: how we see ourselves
http://www.hindu.com/2007/12/11/stories/2007121155841000.htm Opinion -Leader Page Articles India in the world: how we see ourselves Meera Nanda As many as 90 per cent of us told the Pew pollsters that religion must be kept separate from government policy. But in reality, how many of us stand up for God-government separation, something we say weare committed to? Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of us all? A modern version of the Snow White question was recently asked of people in 47 countries across the world by the United States-based Pew Foundation for its 2007 Global Attitudes survey. Guess who is the most bewitched by their own self-image? We are. Indians rank number one in the world in thinking that they are number one in the world, at least when it comes to their culture. The Pew poll asked people in 47 countries if they agreed or disagreed with the following statement: our people are not perfect, but our culture is superior to others. Indians topped the list, with a whopping 93 per cent agreeing that our culture was superior to others, with 64 per cent agreeing completely, without any reservations. Now all people have a soft spot for their own culture. But to see how off-the-charts our vanity is, let us compare ourselves with the other ancient civilisations in our neighbourhood. Compared to our 64 per cent, only 18 per cent of the Japanese and only 20 per cent Chinese had no doubt at all that their culture was the best. Indeed, close to one quarter of Japanese and Chinese — as compared to our meagre 5 per cent — disagreed that their ways were the best. The U.S. — a country universally condemned for its cultural imperialism — comes across as suffering from a severe case of inferiority complex when compared with us. Only 18 per cent Americans had no doubts about the superiority of their culture, compared with our 64 per cent. Nearly a quarter of Americans expressed self-doubts, and 16 per cent completely denied their own superiority. The corresponding numbers from India are five and one per cent. The strange thing is that for a people who think so highly of our own culture, we are terribly insecure. A startling 92 per cent of Indians — almost exactly the same proportion who think we are the best — think that our way of life needs to be protected against foreign influences. Here, too, we beat the Japanese, the Chinese, and the Americans by about 25-30 percentage points. When it comes to feeling embattled and needing protection, we are closer to our Islamic neighbours, Pakistan (82 per cent) and Bangladesh (81 per cent). Indeed, we feel so embattled that 84 per cent of us want to restrict entry of people into the country, compared with only 75 per cent of those asked in the U.S., a country where legal and illegal immigration is of a magnitude higher than anywhere in the world. So, paradoxically, our vanity is matched only by our persecution complex. The Pew survey did not probe deeper into what exactly we are so proud of, and what we are so scared of. But given that almost all of us grow up hearing how spiritual our culture is, it is quite likely that we worry that foreign cultures will corrupt our spiritual values with their crass materialism. Well, we need not worry. When it comes right down to it, we are as materialistic as the worst of them. Indians turn out to be among the most gung-ho when it comes to support for free markets. The Pew poll asked this question: most people are better off in a free market economy, even though some people are rich and some poor. The enthusiasm for the market economy in India exceeded that in the U.S., the bastion of unrestrained capitalism: 76 per cent of Indians, as compared with 70 per cent of Americans, are pro-market despite the problem of inequality. A solid 40 per cent of Indian respondents had no reservations and no doubts about the desirability of markets, while only 25 per cent of Americans were so unreserved. A comparison with China and Russia — two countries with memories of a communist past — is instructive. While China and Russia are as much, if not more, integrated into the global economy as us, only 17 per cent of Russians and 15 per cent of Chinese supported the markets without any reservations and doubts. More complicated But we are actually more complicated than these numbers indicate. While we say we like free markets, 92 per cent of us also want the state to step in and take care of the poor. Our level of support for a welfare state is, commendably, much higher than in the U.S. (70 per cent) and is comparable to support for public welfare in Russia (86 per cent) and China (90 per cent). Indian support for state intervention on behalf of the poor is actually higher than it is in France (83 per cent), Germany (87 per cent), both of which have highly developed state welfare economies. On the whole, Indian public opinion appears to support a benign capitalism where the state ensures the welfare of the poor. At least this is
[Goanet] Anti-Christian Violence In Orissa
INDIA Young Catholic Buried Alive In Anti-Christian Violence In Orissa September 11, 2008 BHUBANESWAR, India (UCAN) -- As the anti-Christian pogrom in Orissa ebbs, survivors recount narrow escapes as well as atrocities they witnessed. Anti-Christian violence swept through the eastern Indian state after Swami Laxmananda Saraswati, an 85-year-old Hindu religious leader, and four associates were killed on Aug. 23 in the state's Kandhamal district. Maoists claimed responsibility, but Hindu extremists blame Christians. About 50,000 Christians hid in forests as Hindu radical mobs burned their houses and Church buildings, such as churches, presbyteries and convents. The violence claimed at least 27 lives, mostly Christians, and wounded hundreds including pastors and nuns. One of the Catholics killed in the violence was Rajesh Digal. His brother-in-law, Kamal Digal, narrated how a mob buried Rajesh alive. Kamal, also a Catholic, spoke with UCA News on Sept. 9 over the phone from an undisclosed location in Kandhamal district. Rajesh, 27, and a Hindu friend, Tunguru Mallick, worked in Chennai, a southern Indian city. The two came back to Orissa for holidays and arrived at G. Udayagiri, a small town, on Aug. 24, not realizing Hindu groups had called for a statewide strike that day to protest Swami Saraswati's murder. The town 220 kilometers west of Bhubaneswar, the state capital, is in Kandhamal. Bhubaneswar lies 1,745 kilometers southeast of New Delhi. As no transport was available, Rajesh and Tunguru decided to walk to Bataguda, their native village, about 60 kilometers further west from G. Udayagiri. However, a mob accosted the duo when they reached Paburia, about 12 kilometers into their journey, and demanded they identify themselves. As the two tried to talk, someone pulled a bible from Rajesh's bag. The mob then began beating Rajesh, who fell down to the ground. While some continued to beat him, others dug a pit in a nearby field. As they dragged Rajesh toward it, he asked the attackers why they were burying him when he was still alive. They retorted, Call your Jesus. He will save you. They then tied Rajesh, dumped him into the pit and covered it with mud. Kamal said Tunguru, who watched the entire incident, recounted it all to him. The extremists then turned to Tunguru, who kept insisting he was a Hindu. Nonetheless, they condemned him for befriending Christians, then poured kerosene on him and set him on fire. Tunguru fled to a nearby village where people helped douse the fire. According to Kamal, Tunguru suffered severe burns on his body. Kamal said Rajesh's two younger sisters and an aged mother now live in a relief camp. Nobody has filed a police case over Rajesh's death, he added. END
[Goanet] HINDUTVA UNSCRAMBLED
For favour of publication. Thanks. Averthanus _ HINDUTVA UNSCRAMBLED. Averthanus L. D'Souza. Ramesh Rajaram Vispute, a former Secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) once remarked: The enemies of the Hindus are the Muslims, the Christians, the Hindu intellectuals and the media. It is both significant and intriguing that Vispute included the Hindu intellectuals and the media in his category of the enemies of Hindus. It does not take great intellectual acumen to interpret the meaning of this statement by a very prominent Hindutva promoter. Obviously, Hindu intellectuals are not likely to swallow the confused garbage which is churned out by the Hindutva propagandists to arouse anger and hate against Muslims and Christians, for which the VHP is notorious. Any thinking person (including Hindu intellectuals) will see through the falsity of the arguments which the VHP advances in its hate campaigns. It is precisely because the position of the Hindutva campaign is irrational and untenable that the propagandists prefer to have uneducated and unthinking followers who can easily be manipulated to believe anything that is fed to them. The Bajrang Dal, which is considered to be the front rank storm-troopers of the VHP is a good example of uneducated youth, with more passion than reason, who are made to believe that heroism consists in slaughtering helpless women and children, and burning innocent people alive, and who are willing to blindly follow orders without thinking. In this respect, the Bajrang Dal is no different from the Hitler Youth of Nazi Germany or the youth brigades of the other fascist movements in Europe, who were used to terrorize the population into submission. With their saffron head-bands and wielding 'trishuls' these rampaging youth can cause terror anywhere - which is precisely what they are trained to do. They are 'programmed' to follow orders, irrespective of the morality of the orders or the consequences which follow.B.S. Moonje, a prominent RSS leader, personally met the Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini in Rome on 19 March, 1931, visited some important military schools and educational institutions and became acquainted with the Balilla and the Avanguardisti organizations. Moonje wrote in his diary that the keystone of the fascist system is indoctrination of youths, rather than education. This is the foundation on which the Bajrang Dal is built. While cultivated ignorance is one facet which is promoted by the Hindutva ideologues, deliberate falsification is another method of indoctrination used.L.K. Advani closely studied the system of propaganda developed by Nazi Germany. He says: In Nazi Germany, fascism in action developed two other distinctive characteristics: firstly, adoption of propaganda as a key instrument of State policy; and secondly, the systematic development of a demonology to keep the masses in a mood of perpetual tension and hysteria. (L.K.Advani- A Prisoner's Scrap Book ) Advani and his colleagues have tried hard to refine and improve the propaganda-cum-terror machinery which was developed by Nazi Germany, specially by Hitler's most trusted lieutenant Paul Joseph Goebbels, whose name has now become synonymous with high-voltage mendacious propaganda. One of the first falsifications which the Hindutva protagonists are propagating is that Hindutva is an integral part of Hinduism. No sensible person, (including thinking Hindus) accept this. In fact, the vast majority of Hindus are aghast at this identification of Hindutva with Hinduism. Hinduism is a religion of long standing. It is highly respected and recognized (even by non-Hindus) as being, perhaps, one of the oldest religions in human history. It outlived the ancient religions of the Sumerians, the Etruscans, the Mesopotamians the Greeks and the Egyptians. Hinduism has always been associated with 'sanatana' which denotes timelessness or ancientness. Hinduism has never been associated with any particular political system; nor has it ever shown a preference for any particular cultural context. In the broadest sense of the word, Hinduism is heterodox and embraces a vast variety of rituals, beliefs, popular practices and dietary preferences. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna: Through whatever path men come to me, I accept them through that very path. In sharp contrast to Hinduism, Hindutva is a clearly definable political ideology which is straining to concoct a national identity on the basis of the Hindu religion.Hindutva is a clearly fascist political movement, which has drawn much of its inspiration from European fascism and German Nazism. The most prominent protagonists of Hindutva, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1902 - 1966), Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar (1906 - 1973) and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (1901 - 1953) among others, have derived their ideologies from
[Goanet] Can any mother bear to see these pictures?
I'm the mother of a daughter and unfortunately I opened up on a picture that bears the charred remains of a little girl. Can any mother bear to see such pictures? This innocent child, who through no fault of her own, bears unfortunate testimony to the inhumanity of mankind, the lawless jungle that India is increasingly becoming. I hope the mother of this child has not survived. No mother can bear to live through these images and reclaim any sort of life for herself. And for the world's sake, I hope there is a God somewhere, although my faith in him dissipated a long time ago. As Christians, my community will go on a fast, talk about turning the other cheek, and becoming martyrs. For an agnostic like me, these are further humiliations in our misplaced belief in some sort of divine justice. They are nothing but expressions of our hopelessness, in a country where the polity and the judiciary are spineless and indifferent. We are a forsaken community. Sentenced to second-class citizenship in our own country. There are some on this forum, who have the impertinence to talk about the history or the cause of communalism. What cares? Who cares, when Indian's children are lying in the streets. What can a mother do? Kiss her own child and hope that she doesn't become the victim of someone else's bigotry and utter lack of a conscience. Thank each day I have with my child, who know what tomorrow will rob me off? selma
[Goanet] Orissa Voilence
---Original Message This wonderful email by a Laluram who reportedly lives in Bicholim, validates statements that I have been making. If this isn't brain washing in the making I don't know what is.To begin with, let me start with a bit of history. The population of India at the time of independence was roughly 350 million. For Muslims to have killed 100 million Hindus, during the Muslim era, they would have had to pretty much get rid of the entire population of India. That is in no way to diminish the atrocities committed during this era, but only to put them in their proper historical context and not to have them nursed like they happened yesterday, and have them visited upon current generations of Muslims.Such rationalizations are wasted on those being brain-washed in India today. selma Dear Selma The invasion of India by Mahmud Ghazni about 1000 A.D. was the beginning of Muslim invasions era which lasted for several centuries. Invasions by other Muslim Sultans continued even when the Muslims were ruling different parts of India, for example the invasion of the Mongols during the reign of the Khiljis or the invasion of the Mughals in the early sixteenth Century when the Lodis were ruling Delhi. The most remarkable invasion of the Muslims from outside was the invasion of Nadir Shah in 1739, during which he unleashed a horrifying genocide on the native Hindu population. During these seven hundred years of Muslim invasions and their conquest of India the Hindus were were forcibly converted to Islam. According to Prof. K.S. Lal, the author of the Growth of Muslim population in India, the Hindu population decreased by 80 million the year Mahmud Ghazni invaded India and 1525 AD, a year before the battle of Panipat. By all known accounts of world history, as mentioned by Koenard Elst in his book the Negationism in India, genocide of about 100 million Hindus is perhaps the biggest holocaust in the whole world history. I am not an Historian and above facts I have read in some internet sites only but it is my conscience which make me envisage why any one who speaks for Hindus is labeled a fundamentalist ? [Goanet] Oh Dear Parrikar
Augusto Pinto wrote: At least now the notion of affdunk' or 'touchability' has thankfully disappeared, but when I was young, meaning some 35 years ago, it was still prevalent. It meant that there were some people whom you could touch and drink their water and drink their tea so on without any worry. And there were others you could not. I learnt this first hand where I lived then, in my 'ancestral house' in Sangolda, under the same roof as a Shet family, who were themselves looked down upon by Saraswats although they wore a 'zanvem' and called themselves Daivadnya Brahmins'. There is no way you could be so innocent as you pretend to be. When someone uses the word 'chamars' in a public sphere, the intention, consciously or unconsciously. is to denigrate. Luckily for Parrikar, the Great Rane was in the chair during that Assembly session. Or else we could have seen something historic in the literature of anti-caste-discrimination. - My response By citing his 35 year old experiences, I wonder what Augusto Pinto is tying to convey. Other than conveying that caste discriminations, caste atrocities and caste differences exist in the Hindu society, things that we are all well aware of, he communicates nothing else. His illustrations do not in any way prove that Manohar Parrikar is a casteist or the remark he made on the Floor of the Assembly is a casteist remark. Everything should be seen from within its context and not from outside of it. A careful perusal or even an elementary reading of Parrikar's remark would quite clearly show that Parrikar has committed no crime. He did not use chamars in his diction to denigrate a particular caste or community, as Mr. Pinto wrongly tries to imply. Here are the facts to set the records straight: 1. On the Floor of the Assembly, Parrikar specifically avers that one Chamar or cobbler was acting as the agent of police for collecting hafta. 2. The Minister for Sports, Mr. Manohar Azgaonkar, asks the Speaker to expunge the references by Parrikar, on the grounds that Parrikar has made a casteist statement. 3. Parrikar maintains that the person he is referring to is a cobbler, and the term used by him thus relates to occupation and not caste. 4. Rane asks Babu what alternative word Parrikar must use in such an instance. Babu is at a loss for words. 5. The president of the Goa State Scheduled Caste Federation, Mr. Gangaram Morajkar, accepts that the Leader of the Opposition has used the term Chamar without an intention to insult anyone, but finds it objectionable nevertheless. Is Parrikar a villain in this episode? Before we brand him as one, we need to make a fair and considerate assessment. On this note I am reminded of the words of Mahatma Gandhi. He said before we do any act, we need to ask ourselves: Is this the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? There would be a whole lot of reasons why I would want to throw stones on Manohar Parrikar, just as I would want to chuck them on many other Legislators too, but by no stretch of imagination can this be one of them. Words like chamar and mhalo are konkani words for cobbler and barber and Parrikar's crime, if at all he has committed one, is no bigger or lesser, than those committed by other Goans who use such words periodically in their day-to-day conversations. That was precisely what I was trying to illustrate by quoting the maid incident. If the professor finds my illustration a pathetic attempt, he must make an honest and sincere attempt to assess his own 35 year old incidents, and ask himself how relevant these are to the present scope of the discussion. Fault Finders will find faults even in heaven. If we are consistently negative, we will find faults with almost everyone and anyone. If you look at the whole world with jaundiced eyes, everything in it will look yellow. Can we be a bit more positive for a change? Cheers Sandeep
[Goanet] Can someone tell me what about this surname?
To begin with if saraswats were croocked, it has been recorded by others. Has anyone recorded crookedness of tribal societies? If there is no mention of that in saraswat web site, neither have i read colaco bad mouthing his ancesters. If one were to take colaco's word on his ancestors they were washed in milk (dood ke dhule)- as they say in Hindi. colaco is pretty good in badmouthing saraswats - badmouthing, because there is more emotion and less thinking. I am sorry for colaco, hes talents are wasted - he would have made a very successful Nazi propagandist. I do buy Marxist history, but not Marxist fables and tales of noble tribal societies - on the contrary in a tribal setting you never knew when you were going to have your next meal, or you would be the next meal! When Marxist talk of primitive communism of tribal societies and archiving mature communism through class action, I think of an insecure adult trying to get back the security of his mother's womb. About goan Khazana lands: 1) Look any where in India, prehistoric paddy fields do not have regular geometry, unlike in goa. 2) In goa, particularly around Verna, paddy field bund are arrow straight for more than 2200 feet. 3) I presume there were no harvesters or transplanting machines in goa 3000 years ago. I am just assuming this. Correct me if I am wrong. So there was no need for straight lines 4) It is irrational to have them straight, makes no economic sense. It is very much less labour consuming to stick to contours - which are not in straight lines. Making bunds in arrow straight line means lot of excavation of earth and lots of filling with no economic advantage at all. Did they have 21st century tourists in mind? Further, though paddy field bund were arrow straight for over 2200 feet, individual paddy fields of goa are tiny compared to other parts of India (excluding hilly regions - for obvious reasons), making it difficult to use even a pair of bullocks for paddy cultivation work. 5) Such gigantic geometry means large scale organisation and high agricultural surplus. 6) How there can be agricultural surplus before paddy fields in Khazana lands (which were most fertile of goan lands) were developed - basic theory in economics says that most fertile lands are taken up for agriculture first. 7) Why would any local would venture into such a wasteful labour, even if he had the technology and the resources. Having resources is very unlikely as any large agricultural surplus would have been utilised into building cities. Everywhere in the world, large agricultural surpluses automatically created cities. 8) I read somewhere that paddy fields of goa have Mesopotamian measurement. 9) My hypothesis is that powerful/ rich people from Mesopotamia or Indus Vally colonized goa and used either imported labour or local labour - by paying or by coercion and built the taj mahals of goa. 10) The idea of goan paddy fields is from a city - compare arrow straight roads of Indus Vally. 11) The surplus could also be from trading from the goan ports - which is a remote possibility - as there are no large pre-historic cities in goa. upkamth.

Re: [Goanet] Orissa Voilence
why any one who speaks for Hindus is labeled a fundamentalist ? Laluram Salvi Dear Salvi, In a high level meeting of Orissa Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), VHP (Viswa Hindu Parishad), Bajrang Dal and RSS (Rastriya Swayam Sevak Sangh) held in Rourkela on 24th August, they have made a firm resolution to continue the work of demolishing all the Christian Institutions and Churches in the State, especially in the district of Sundargarh. They have planned to start the attacks in the western Orissa from Wednesday (27th August). This is the message given by Mr. Patric Minz – a police who went in a civil dress to the meeting. Also these organisations openly deny their role in the recent merciless killings in Orissa. If not fundamentalist what do you want to call them ? - Ancy
[Goanet] God and You
Albert writes. God created the earth and He created trees and ocean and fishes and everything only for the benefit of man. But man created religion and he created castes and colour and divided the earth .Man became greedy and the effect of man's greed can be seen today .Problems in Goa, problems in UK problems in USA. Do you agree with me ? Our whole problem is we do not know to solve our problems because our prayers are man made and goes into the air. Today we do not look up to Our Heavenly Father and praise Him for His glory. We are taught from infancy prayers that go into the air. We do not speak the language of the heart. We speak the language of some human beings. We ought to meditate. God speaks to us only when we are far away from the worldly noise. Today our religious leaders are living in confusion. One leader will contradict the other leader of its own kind. Because our religion is also man made. We want to defend Christianity. If Christianity is the religion that Jesus has created with his blood and sacrifice then it should be Father centred and if it is not created by Jesus through his blood and the cross then it is man made. There is no level of thinking. All inspirations should come from the one who has created You and Me. The Heavenly Father who loves you. If Christianity is created by Jesus through his blood and cross with the blessings of His Father then our religion should be based on Love God and Love human beings. Just one to one. One is God and the other is you. By creating saints and different size Marys we cannot achieve Heavenly abode because all our feasts are just fiasco. Mary who was the mother of Jesus was God's creation and this Mary did the will of God by saying yes. She followed God's plan .She love God the Father and she loved His creations. We have amply proof. Visit to Elizabeth and the wedding at Cana are enough proofs. In today's world one Mary is powerful than the other. That is the common belief and that is the reason people rush to Valankani because they believe that saibin is better than the one you have in your church. The thing is there is only one Mary who loved Jesus and took care of him from Manager till he was able to go into the world but did not leave him when he was going to the cross. She did what every mother would do. So this Mary of Jesus is better than the Marys that has been created by us. The first Mary loved God and made Him the creator and the planner. She loved God and obyed His commandments. She loved Jesus and loved others too _ Want to explore the world? Visit MSN Travel for the best deals. http://in.msn.com/coxandkings

[Goanet] HINDUTVA UNSCRAMBLED
Dear Averthanus, You have hit the nail on its head: When the tribals were NOT Hindus at the time of their conversion to Christianity, how can their second conversion to Hinduism be termed as ghar vapasi?? The use of computer age Default system of calling all non-Muslim, non-Christian, non-Jew Indians as Hindus denies the existence of animism and other tribal religions. The Bhandari and GAKUVED [Gawda, Kunbi, Velip and Dhangar] communities have been adopted into the Hindu fold when they actually practice a faith that is vastly different and worship the Ganvcho Rakhannddar, not any god. Patriots and Nationalists do not destroy national assets, specially its Human Resource and its moral position. Falsification of even national history was attempted even through the NCERT during the BJP rule. As for secularism and tolerance, one only has to see the substitution of Shiva with Krishna in the open space near Sai Colony in Porvorim and the targeting of Hindus and Catholics alike in an effort to grab a plot of 800 sq. metres. Militancy and religion cannot go together. Therein err the crusaders, the jihadis and the saffron brigade. As I Corinthians 13: 1 to 3 tells us ...everything we achieve is useless, if we have no love. Mog asundi. Miguel Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2008 17:08:01 +0530 From: Averthan D'Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] HINDUTVA UNSCRAMBLED Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ HINDUTVA UNSCRAMBLED. Ramesh Rajaram Vispute, a former Secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) once remarked: The enemies of the Hindus are the Muslims, the Christians, the Hindu intellectuals and the media. It is both significant and intriguing that Vispute included the Hindu intellectuals andthe media in his category of the enemies of Hindus. Any thinking person (including Hindu intellectuals) will see through the falsity of the arguments which the VHP advances in its hate campaigns. It is precisely because the position of the Hindutva campaign is irrational and untenable that the propagandists preferto have uneducated and unthinking followers who can easily be manipulated to believe anything that is fed to them. They are 'programmed' to follow orders, irrespective of the morality of the orders or the consequences which follow. (L.K.Advani- A Prisoner's Scrap Book ) One of the first falsifications which the Hindutva protagonists are propagating is that Hindutva is an integral part of Hinduism. No sensible person, (including thinking Hindus) accept this. In fact, the vast majority of Hindus are aghast at this identification of Hindutva with Hinduism. Suffice it to indicate only a few blatant contradictions in their propaganda. One: Hindutva is supposedly a movement to create a Hindu Rashtra. The formation of the World Hindu Council is a clear contradiction of the claim that Hindutva is Hindu nationalism. Two: the VHP claims that people who profess and practice other religions cannot be part of the Hindu Rashtra. This is in stark contradiction to the repeated statements made by the Hindutva leaders that Hindutva is a secular concept. In fact, they claim that because they are Hindu, they are secular. They accuse non-Hindus of being pseudo-secular. They offer the lame and unconvincing argument that they are only bringing back these people to the Hindu fold. They have called this ghar vapasi. The fact is that the tribals have never been Hindu. They have their own culture, religion and social practices. Ghar vapasi in their case simply does not make any sense. Averthanus L.

I doubt Laluram exists. This post was obviously meant to inflame the debate on the net. If Laluram is in fact a real person, he is obviously retarded and deserves to be in a mental institution. Likewise, not only does the name Patric Minz sound phony, I also highly doubt that any major organization such as the VHP or RSS would expose itself in such a blatant manner. Obviously Christians, and more relevantly to us, some extremist Catholic Goans are not immune to justifying violence to push their agenda either. In 2006, Inox had to withdraw the showing of Da Vinci Code, under the threat of violence from some Goan politicians, which was also supported by some extremist catholic goons on Goanet. [Goanet] Goan culture and its ties with the Portuguese colonial era
http://indiapost.com/article/lifestyle/3831/ The Pool coming to LA Sept 19 Thursday, 09.11.2008, 11:15pm (GMT-7) LOS ANGELES: Chris Smith's The Pool is a charming, elegantly shot fable set in neighborhoods of poverty and privilege in Goa, India. 18-year-old Venkatesh ekes out a living working in a hotel and pounding the pavement selling plastic bags. It's a far cry from his fantasy - to dive into the glimmering, David Hockney-esque swimming pool of an upper-class family that never actually swim in it. After he befriends the head of the household (Bollywood superstar Nana Patekar), and begins to pal around with his upstart, cosmopolitan teenage daughter Ayesha, Venkatesh subtly but assertively sets his sights on a more comfortable way of life for himself and his friend, 12-year old self-sufficient and charismatic Jhangir who manages a restaurant pretty much by himself. The three youngsters are resilient as they navigate an adult world, in between enjoying simple pleasures like picking mangos or traveling to the ocean. Remarkably, this neorealist tale, reminiscent of the great Satyajit Ray, is written and directed by an American, Chris Smith, acclaimed director of American Movie (1999) and The Yes Men (2003). Smith is being honored with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art - Chris Smith: American Original. Chris went to India to work on a friend's film and knew he wanted to come back to shoot. Indeed he did, adapting The Pool to Goa where he cast non-actors as his leading men, Venkatesh and Jhangir. A truly independent gem of a feature. Informed by incisive observations about the class divide but more interested in the mysteries of the human heart, this gentle variation on neorealism is a delight on every level. Uplifting without a drop of sap. - Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter Sensitive to the culture, not only of India, but to those people who must work menial jobs to survive and dream of something bigger, Smith has crafted a quietly beautiful movie that honors both. - Anthony Kaufman, indieWIRE The Portuguese-inflected soundtrack (with music by Didier Leplae and Joe Wong) reps an example of how Smith has creatively tapped into Goan culture and its ties with the Portuguese colonial era. - Robert Koehler, Variety India Post News Service

[Goanet] Orissa Christians Suspect Hindu Hand Behind Saraswati Murder
Orissa Christians Suspect Hindu Hand Behind Saraswati Murder By Christopher Joseph September 12, 2008 BHUBANESWAR, India (UCAN) -- Christians in Orissa say they suspect the murder of a Hindu leader that triggered anti-Christian violence was part of a well-planned political strategy of Hindu radical groups. That suspicion is very strong among Christians here, says Reverend Sudhansu Naik in the state capital of Bhubaneswar, 1,745 kilometers southeast of New Delhi. The Baptist pastor told UCA News on Sept. 11 that many Christians believe Hindu radical groups carried out Swami Laxmananda Saraswati's murder or collaborated in the crime. Violence against Christians began after the 85-year-old Hindu leader and his four associates were gunned down on Aug. 23. A Maoist group claimed responsibility for the murders but Hindu radical groups continue to blame Christians. The swami was based in Orissa's Kandhamal district, a Christian stronghold 350 kilometers west of Bhubaneswar. Since Aug. 24, the district has been the epicenter of an anti-Christian pogrom. At least 27 people, mostly Christians, have been killed in the violence. Christians raise several questions about the murder. Why did the government fail to protect (Swami Saraswati) after he complained about a threat to his life? asks a Protestant lawyer who fled Kandhamal and is now living in Bhubaneswar. The swami had reportedly complained to state officials and police about a Maoist threat to his life a few days before his death. Following a similar complaint a few years ago, the administration provided him police protection. The Hindu leader also had personal bodyguards. Reverend Naik wants to know where those bodyguards were when Swami Saraswati was murdered. Why did the police fail to act, if they were there? If enough police force wasn't there, who was responsible? The pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, Indian people's party) is a ruling coalition partner in Orissa, where elections are due in 2009. If Maoists killed him, (the Hindu radicals) encouraged them to kill him. If Maoists have not killed him, then they themselves must have killed him, Reverend Naik asserted. The Baptist pastor noted that Hindu extremists began blaming Christians even before a preliminary probe. Even after Maoists admitted the responsibility, why do they insist it was done by Christians? he asked. A. Senapati, a lawyer and Catholic activist, quoted newspaper reports saying the murderers had used automatic Sten guns to kill Swami Saraswati. If such guns were available to Christians, they would have used them to defend themselves against violent mobs, he added. A Catholic priest, who wanted to remain anonymous, said Christians in Kandhamal are poor farmers. How can they think of buying guns that require training to use? he asked. Senapati wonders why the swami's body was cremated without an autopsy when the law requires postmortems on bodies in cases of unnatural deaths. If BJP was upset about the murder, why did they continue in the government that failed to protect their leader? he asked, alleging that anti-Christian violence was carried out with state support. The lawyer bemoaned the government shoot-on-sight order had remained only on paper. Speaking to UCA News, he claimed police were asked not to act against the violence. Reverend Naik says the fighting has strong political connotations, because only the Hindu groups have benefited from it. The pastor pointed out that Kandhamal's 120,000 Christian voters would definitely vote against the BJP, since the district had witnessed anti-Christian violence during the 2007 Christmas season. The Hindu radicals needed to do something to win political support there, he added. A Catholic priest at the archbishop's residence, who also insisted on anonymity, says Swami Saraswati's murder only brought suffering for Christians. Christians in Orissa now want a federal probe because the local administration could easily claim to prove a Christian hand behind the murder by picking up a few poor innocent Christians. Another priest said the slain Hindu leader had already reached a ripe age and would have survived only a few more years with medication, so Hindu radical groups must have thought of a better way of using him. [Goanet] Cheers Dears: Sir Gungul'lo
Cheers Dears By Augusto Pinto Sir Gungul'lo Dears, In Moira If you fling a stone and you aren't careful, as likely as not, you'll hit a teacher. On Teachers Day, I went to wish one of the most eminent, my neighbour, Tinu Sir, the retired headmaster. Wishing him, I asked,Tinu why does Moira have so many teachers? Without batting an eyelid, but with a smile, he answered,The wisdom of our people. I said,Ha!! He continued,But it wasn't always so. After Liberation, when the medium of instruction changed from Portuguese to Marathi or English, there was a shortage of teachers all over Goa, and a lot were recruited from Maharashtra and Kerala. I said,I remember one from Kerala who used to teach us, Sir Gungul'lo the bumblebee, we had nicknamed him, because of his nasal accent. He was a terror Oh yes! I remember Gungul'lo too. Well, in those days the rod was the accepted method of keeping discipline, Gusto. It used to be worse in the boarding schools, where parents would send their children, especially when they worked abroad. Some masters there really brutalised the boarders. If what they did, happened today, they would end up in jail. He continued,These stressed out teachers could not understand Konkani, so they banned the children from speaking it, on the pretext that they had to learn to speak English. The real reason was they did not want anyone saying anything subversive, and which they could not follow. But then, remember, there were others who were kind and helpful and an inspiration to the kids. I remember one of my colleagues who later became a college lecturer, Prof Jacob, who earned no less than 9 Masters degrees. He taught by example. Changing the subject, I said,On Teacher's Day, you must feel good to hear all the stuff said about you, isn't it? At least for today, all of you are Virtue personified!! Replied Tinu philosophically, Well, teachers are human beings and you'll have some good ones and others... well... life's like that. I said,Speaking about Gungul'lo, he liked his tipple, didn't he? As I say, we all have our weaknesses... said Tinu, adding, It got him red-faced once at Gabru's Bar. What happened? I asked. He replied,It involved Pingu who came to the bar. He was an ex-student whom he must have made enemies with in school. Well, Gungul'lo got high and, for some reason, insulted Pingu. Coolly Pingu turned to the others in the joint and said,Do you know who are the cleverest students? The bar perked their ears up and waited, as Pingu could spin a great yarn. Pingu answered his own question - Kerala!! Gungul'lo was pleased and said - Yes! Right! Kerala has the most educated people in the country. Pingu just went on - I'll tell you how I know. A school inspector once came to our class and proved this. He asked us - Can anyone spell 'banana'? You, he said, pointing to Jinu from Nachinola. Spell it! Jinu shook her head. Then he asked Viggy from Aldona. Viggy shook his head too. He then asked Jeff - You son, where are you from? Jeff said - Moira. Aha! - said the inspector. Moira is well known for the banana. You will know to spell the word. But no, Jeff did not know the spelling. Turning to the whole class he cried - Does no one here know to spell 'banana'? One hand shot up. The inspector said - Ah!! Excellent!! What's your name and where are you from? The boy replied, I'm Jose from Kerala sir. The Inspector said - Excellent! From Kerala come the cleverest students! Well, go ahead Jose, spell banana Then Pingu, in a voice that imitated Gungul'lo's accent to a tee, intoned, Bee yay, yen yen yay, yen yen yay, yen yen yay... The whole bar burst out in laughter! Poor Gungul'lo, quietly finished his drink and left. I said,Sir Gungul'lo was a cartoon! Tinu replied thoughtfully,Dunno. He knew his subjects very well, and was a master of English grammar. He never married, and when he died, he left everything he had to an orphanage. Till next time then... Cheers (ENDS) == The above article appeared in the September 10, 2008 edition of the Herald, Goa
